Fun Ways to Celebrate

Editor’s Message It’s the October school holiday, and pretty soon the end of 2018 will be upon us. The last few months of the year always seem to slip away at the speed of light. October is the last month before the kids start writing year end exams (we included some study tips to help get the kids ready) and the short school break gives us a chance to catch up on a little bit of family time. Speaking of family, the T in FEATZ is for Tristan and she - yes she – celebrates her seventeenth birthday this month. Happy Birthday Tristan – may you have a wonderful day! The October issue this year comes to you in a rich Halloween colour scheme. Halloween has never been a huge holiday in South Africa, but I just love all the new horror movies that gets released this time of year and who can resist all the pretty orange pumpkins you see all over town. We might not decorate our houses as the Americans do, but you still see those pumpkins in all the stores. I know many people think Halloween is evil, and that’s why we included an article explaining where it all started. Personally, I think Halloween is fun, colourful day to “lift our spirits”, so go ahead tell a scary story and enjoy the day. October also brings us World Teacher’s Day and Boss’s Day – two people you do not want to forget about this month. The month of October is Breast Cancer and Osteoporosis Awareness month and National Marine week start on the 8th of October. Remember to support these causes in any way you can because if we all make a small contribution, it adds up and goes a long way towards making a difference.

Embracing Responsibility for Women’s Health During October the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) highlights the important role that women can play in taking ownership of their personal health. According to statistics from the National Cancer Registry (NCR) 2014, the top five cancers affecting women in SA include: breast, cervical, colorectal, uterine and lung cancer. Says Elize Joubert, CANSA’s CEO: “It’s important to empower women, with knowledge regarding lowering their cancer and health risk and recognising warning signs. We also encourage monthly breast self-examinations, annual medical check-ups and cancer screening for early detection, as symptoms don’t always present until cancer has spread. Women need to lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle, cutting out lifestyle factors that increase their cancer risk.”

Breast Cancer SA women have a lifetime risk of 1 in 27. On Friday 26 October 2018, CANSA Care Centres are holding a national Clinical Breast Examination Screening Day teaching women how to do breast self-examinations while nurses perform Clinical Breast Examinations. Mobile Health Clinics offer these services to women in remote rural areas. (See the schedule for September & October Click Here) Breast cancer survivor, Melissa Willemse says, “When it comes to breast cancer age is not a factor. The first doctor I saw immediately dismissed my question about the painful lump under my arm because I was too young for breast cancer. When I eventually went for a second opinion we found out I had stage 3 Triple negative breast cancer. I was 28 the first time and now at 32, I’ve just finished treatment for a recurrence. If you feel something is wrong don’t hesitate to get a second opinion. Cancer doesn’t care how old you are.”

fees, at participating Radiological Society of South Africa affiliated mammography clinics during October. CANSA Care Centres offer a variety of breast prostheses at affordable rates for those who had to undergo a mastectomy/lumpectomy and offer advice to help cope with the side effects of cancer treatment.

Cervical Cancer The second highest cancer affecting women in SA is cervical (lifetime risk of 1 in 42). CANSA recommends Pap smear tests – uncomfortable but painless – to help lower the risk of cervical cancer, not just detect it early.

CANSA Care Centre nurses offer Pap smears and its Mobile Health Clinics provide this service in areas far from clinics. CANSA supports the Department of Health’s HPV School Vaccination programme. Persistent infection with HPV may lead to cervical cancer so all females in the age group of 9-26 years (provided they are not sexually CANSA advocates a mammogram every year active) can be vaccinated. for all women from age 40 for purposes of Women making use of public sector non-symptomatic breast screening. As the number of women smoking Most colorectal cancers begin as a polyp increases, so have the number of women which can be removed during a colonoscopy being diagnosed with lung cancer. In women procedure. Should women experience who stop smoking, the risk of developing abnormal symptoms, they should request lung cancer falls dramatically. Women a referral for a colonoscopy to screen for wanting to quit smoking can sign up for cancer. CANSA recommends a colonoscopy CANSA’s Kick Butt online programme on from the age of 50, every 10 years. cansa.org.za “I’m a colorectal survivor, diagnosed at 28, late stage 3. I experienced symptoms but the doctors kept misdiagnosing me. Eventually I went straight to a specialist who picked it up. If you find any blood or mucous in your stools go to a GP or specialist immediately,” stated Carima Adams. Some CANSA Care Centres and Mobile Health Clinics offer a faecal occult blood test to check for blood hidden in the stool. A side effect of colorectal cancer may include having a colostomy. Joubert adds, “We offer pre- and post-operative counselling and support groups at our Stoma Clinics. We also stock stoma brands and guarantee the lowest prices, professional assistance and speedy delivery.”

Uterine Cancer The most common form of this cancer affects the lining of the uterus. Women, 50 and older, who have diabetes, or a family history of uterine cancer or endometrial polyps are more at risk. Other risk factors included being overweight, inactive, consuming alcohol, poor dietary habits, and

CANSA’s support to cancer patients also includes medical equipment hire, wigs, counselling, support groups, online support groups and resources, as well as CANSA Care Homes where patients receiving treatment far from home can stay during treatment. “CANSA further funds research projects at tertiary institutions regarding breast cancer related to screening, improved management, rehabilitation and improved quality of life. And we currently fund several cervical cancer research projects”, concluded Joubert.

Yorkshire Terrier Small in size but big in personality, the Yorkshire Terrier makes a feisty but loving companion. A popular toy dog breed, the “Yorkie” has won many fans with his devotion to his owners, his elegant looks, and his suitability to apartment living. The Yorkshire Terrier, nicknamed the Yorkie, seems quite full of himself, and why not? With his long silky coat and perky topknot, the Yorkshire Terrier is one of the most glamorous representatives of the dog world, sure to attract attention wherever he goes. Because he’s so small he often travels in style — in special dog purses toted around by his adoring owner. The long steel-blue and tan coat may be the Yorkie’s crowning glory, but it’s his personality that truly endears him to his family. Oblivious to his small size (weighing in at no more than three kilograms), the Yorkshire Terrier is a big dog in a small body, always on the lookout for adventure and maybe even a bit of trouble. Yorkshire Terriers are affectionate towards their people as one would expect from a companion dog, but true to

their terrier heritage, they’re sometimes suspicious of strangers and will bark at strange sounds and intruders. In consideration of your neighbours, it’s important to tone down their yappiness and teach them when and when not to bark. They also can be aggressive toward strange dogs, and no squirrel is safe from them. Despite their bravado, Yorkshire Terriers have a soft side too. They need lots of attention and time with their family. Long hours of being left alone are not for them. It’s not a good idea to over-protect your Yorkie, however; they’ll pick up on your feelings very quickly, and if your actions say the world’s a dangerous place for them, they can become neurotic. Because of their size, Yorkshire Terriers do better with older children who’ve been taught to respect them than with toddlers and small children. They can become snappish if they’re startled or teased. As long as they get some exercise every day — perhaps a good play session in the living room or a nice walk around the block — Yorkies make 9

fine apartment dogs. No matter what home they live in, they’ll get along with other resident dogs and cats — so long as they were raised with them. Yorkies may become possessive of their owners if a new pet is brought into the house. Being terriers, they may want to challenge the “intruder,” and if a fight breaks out, the terrier spirit is to fight to the death. Take a lot of care when you’re introducing a Yorkie to a new animal. A glamorous coat, small size, spunky personality, and undying loyalty to his people. Is it any wonder that Yorkshire Terriers are such a popular dog breed today? Yorkshire Terriers should be 20 to 23 centimetres at the shoulder and weigh no more than 3.5 kilograms, with 1.8 to 2.8 kilograms being preferred. Yorkies are inconsistent in size. It’s not unusual for a single litter to contain one Yorkie weighing less than 1.8 kgs, one who weighs 2 to 2.7 kgs, and one who grows to be to 6 kgs. Beware of breeders who offer “teacup” Yorkshire Terriers. Dogs who are smaller than the standard are prone to genetic disorders and are at a higher health risk in general. Smart and self-assured, the Yorkshire Terrier is a combination of endearingly small size and adventurous terrier spirit. The breed displays a range of personalities. Some are cuddly and perky, wanting nothing more than to follow in their people’s footsteps throughout the day. Others are mischievous, outgoing, and into everything. Set limits and your Yorkie will be a wonderful companion, but if you spoil him, watch out! Start training when they’re puppies, and you’ll have much better luck than if you let them have their way and then try to correct bad habits. Like all dogs, Yorkies needs early socialization — exposure to many different people, sights, sounds, and experiences — when they’re young. Socialization helps ensure that your Yorkie will be a friendly, well-rounded dog.

• Yorkshire terriers are known for being difficult to housetrain. Crate-training is recommended. • Yorkshire terriers don’t like the cold and are prone to chills, especially if they’re damp or in damp areas. • Because of their small size, delicate structure and terrier personality, Yorkshire terriers generally aren’t recommended for households with toddlers or small children. • Some Yorkshire Terriers can be “yappy” barking at every sound they hear. Early and consistent training can help. If you don’t feel qualified to provide this training, consult a professional dog trainer. • Yorkshire Terriers can have delicate digestive systems and may be picky eaters. Eating problems can occur if your Yorkie has teeth or gum problems as well. If your Yorkie is showing discomfort when eating or after eating, take him to the vet for a check-up. • Yorkshire Terriers think they are big dogs and will try to pick a fight with a big dog if allowed. Be sure to keep your Yorkie under control. Even better, try to socialise your Yorkie at an early age by taking him to obedience classes. •

Yorkies tend to retain their puppy teeth, especially the canines. When your puppy is around five months old, check his teeth often. If you notice that an adult tooth is trying to come in but the baby tooth is still there, take him to your vet. Retained baby teeth can cause the adult teeth to come in unevenly, which may contribute to tooth decay in later years.

To get a healthy dog, never buy a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, puppy mill, or pet store. Look for a reputable breeder who tests her breeding dogs to make sure they’re free of genetic diseases that they might pass onto the puppies, and that they have sound temperaments. 11

Bushbabies, monkeys, baboons, squirrels and bushpigs eat the fruit when ripe. Butterflies and flies visit the flowers. One often finds elongated, papillate galls on the leaves that are caused by insects. The fruit is mostly eaten raw but in some parts, it is stored as dried fruit to be used in time of food scarcity. It is said that mampoer, a strong alcoholic drink or brandy can be distilled from it or fermented to make beer. If mixed with a little water and sugar it produces an acceptable substitute for applesauce. The fruit juice can also be used for flavouring purposes by squeezing it out in water, discarding the seed and skins. This is done often for flavouring porridge. According to Betsie Rood (1994), vinegar can be produced from the fruit. This plant has medicinal value as well. An infusion of the roots and leaves has been used to treat malaria, chest ailments like pneumonia, as a purgative and to treat ringworms. An infusion of the leaves is used for the relief of a toothache. For the treatment of swelling of the limbs (especially in children) the affected parts are bathed in a decoction of the pounded leaves and small twigs. The wild medlar is a hardy and drought resistant plant that can withstand moderate cold. It is rarely cultivated in the trade. It can be propagated from fresh seed or cuttings. To make sure that it germinates readily, remove the outer skin and the pulp. Sow in well-drained, sandy seedling mix. This plant is slow growing but would make an attractive garden plant if trimmed from the start to form a specimen plant.

It is a common sight to see respectable companies appreciate their employees by praising them or sharing their achievements in the workplace or even celebrating their birthdays with a simple celebration. Red-throated Wryneck

It has populations scattered across sub-Saharan Africa, including one confined to South Africa and Swaziland. Within southern Africa it occurs from the Limpopo Province to the Eastern Cape, generally preferring grassland with sparse trees. It has been recorded as host of the Lesser honeyguide. Highly specialized, as it feeds exclusively on ants and termites. It often excavates ant nests, licking them up with its sticky tongue. The following insects have been recorded in its diet: ants, their eggs and pupae (Formicidae), Pheidole megacephala, Crematogaster castanea, Lepisiota capensis, Acantholepis capensis, Tetramorium setulferum, termites It usually nests in tree cavities made by other bird species, especially woodpeckers and barbets. It also nests in natural tree cavities, nest boxes and hollow metal fence posts. Egg-laying season is from August-February, peaking in October. It lays 1-6, usually 3-4 eggs, which are incubated by

both sexes for about 13 days. The chicks are cared for by both parents, staying in the nest for about 25-26 days. If threatened, an older chick will perform a threat display similar to a striking snake, extending its neck forward then rapidly recoiling. The juveniles become independent soon after fledging. The Red-throated Wryneck has a height of 20 cms and weighs around 55 gms. The head is coloured brown while the bill is coloured grey. The Jynx ruficollis has a brown coloured throat, olive legs and a brown coloured back. The eyes are brown. This bird forages for food on the ground. The Red-throated Wryneck is usually seen hunting for food within the tree foliage. This bird eats insects such as butterflies, bees, wasps, locusts and ants. These invertebrates are usually hawked aerially, killed and then eaten. Red-throated Wryneck Jynx ruficollis is an ant-eating specialist with adaptations to assist in the mopping up of large numbers of Hymenoptera (Ant) prey. Capable of holding hundreds of ants or ant larvae in each beakful, it is impossible for these birds to control all subsequent movement of prey, resulting in ants crawling around the bird’s beak and head when delivering food to the chicks.

Halloween is not evil! The real history of October 31

!

Do you feel the change in the air all around you? It is growing closer to October 31st when we will celebrate Halloween; the day when the veil between the spirit world and ours, is the thinnest – so they say. The shops are filled with costumes for the little ones to dress up as something frightening, fun or bizarre and go house-to-house trick or treating. Some of us adults dress up too, and have our own Halloween parties. We watch scary movies and indulge in tricks or treats of the adult persuasion. Those of Pagan, Occult and Satanic beliefs have claimed this as their “most important holiday”. What is Halloween really about? Let’s hop on the magic broom and take a trip back in time to try to understand more of the mystery and history of Halloween. About 2000 years ago, in the fifth century B.C. in what is present day Ireland, England and France, a people called the Celts lived and ruled. Life for these people was hard and they depended on nature, she is all they had and all they knew. So, the ending of summer was likened to the ending of human life. The bright, sunny, bountiful days of life and fun ended on October 31, and the onset of autumn, days shortened to long, dark nights of cold and scarcity of food began. What is now Halloween was originally called Samhain (sow-in) the Celtic new year. The story goes that the Celts believed on the day of Samhain the veil between the spirit world and the living world was the thinnest. They believed that the laws of time and space were suspended for a short

period, allowing the spirit world to mingle with the living. It was believed that the spirits of those who had died the previous year were in limbo and that they would come back on this night to possess the bodies of living people for the next year. Their belief was that possessing a living human was their only hope for an afterlife. Of course, the living did not want to be possessed, so they would extinguish their home fires to make their homes cold and uninviting to roaming spirits. They would wear various masks and costumes of the ghoulish and frightening type to parade around in and be as destructive as possible to scare away spirits looking for living bodies to possess. A person thought to be possessed by evil spirits, would be burnt at the stake by the Celts. This was thought to teach the spirits a lesson about what would happen to them should they decide to possess a living person. It was more celebrated in the southern New England colonies such as Maryland, where beliefs and customs from various European cultures and the American Indians meshed, and a distinct version of Halloween began to emerge. Halloween was then celebrated by “play parties”, which were community events, to celebrate harvest time with ghost stories, fortune telling and song and dance. The lighting and carving of pumpkins, or jack-o-lantern’s, originated from an Irish folk tale. The Irish used turnips for many years as their jack-o29

lanterns. When the Irish began coming to America because of the potato famine in Ireland, they found that pumpkins were more bountiful in the new land than turnips. Thus began the use of hollowed out pumpkins as their jack-olanterns, which are still popular today. Trick or treating was not part of the Celtic traditions, but rather from 9th century Europeans, originally called “souling”. November 2nd, All Souls Day, was a day on which early Christians would go from village to village, door to door, begging for “soul cakes,” which were squares of bread and currant berries. The belief being that a soul walked in limbo immediately after death and all prayers, even from strangers, would help the soul into heaven. Throughout the early 1800s, Halloween was celebrated with singing, dancing, dressing up and parlour games. Young, single women at this time believed that on Halloween they could foretell their future husband’s name. An interesting way to find a man! Compared to online dating and blind dates, there can’t be much more of a margin of error!

By the late 1800s, parents were encouraged to remove any ghoulish or frightening Halloween tales that were of superstitious or religious basis. Through the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween became a community celebration with parades and local parties; and vandalism started to become the rage instead of pranks. The baby boom during the 1950s revived trick or treating. Because of the large number of children, this was a way to involve the community with each other and the holiday became a “children’s” holiday. Tricks or pranks being played on families could be avoided by providing little treats for neighbourhood children. A new tradition was born and continues to grow today. Halloween is not evil! Some Pagan groups, occults of various types may have claimed it as their favourite holiday, but it is not an evil day. It comes from Celtic celebration for New Year’s Day. The day, like any other, is only as good or evil as we think it is. Happy Halloween!

GRACE The Simple Gospel By Johan Jordaan

We’ve come to the end of these teachings and I hear you say: I thought that the gospel is supposed to be simple. Well, my Bible does not say that anywhere but let us summarise and see how complicated it really is: START TO: • Believe in Jesus and your Daddy. Don’t make a work of it; simply believe. That pleases Him. • Ask Jesus for a relationship. That is what He wants. And He wants it NOW. • Wait patiently and remind Him of His promises.

That’s not a new thing f you ask Jesus to do something, wait for Him to do it and not consider work! So the onl rest in the meantime. That is how simple it is. Once the relationship is in place it gets even simpler: you simply do to do is: ask Jesus for a relatio what He asks you. He leads and you follow. He does it and work on it. That’s how simple that only one thing is required you do what you see Him doing. that is what Mary chose. That If this is what you should do then surely there’s a lot of The ‘stop doing’ list is not a ne stuff that you are doing now that you can stop doing? No, I put them there to show STOP: doing. Focus on the ‘DOs’ and that’s it. It’s that simple. Now, this is far simpler than the gospel currently preached all over the world, so when reduced to basics it is actually very simple; it’s about a relationship. Focus on that because that is the essence of the gospel. That is what Jesus wants for you. And if you are already in this relationship; hear Him (and only Him) and enjoy the journey.

I know that this is an oversimplification of the gospel because it does not touch issues like the Trinity, baptism, predestination, sin, covenants etc. but this is the point; when you have a relationship with Jesus none of that • Trying to be holy – you really matters. Now the Holy Spirit is your teacher as are already holy. Jesus promised in John 14:26. October in your garden We pack a colourful punch this month with bright, flowering suggestions for you to plant and sow right now. Enjoy the beautiful face of October! Smart planting Enhance your gardening pleasure and manage your budget and water bill with these hardy beauties:

weeks with a slow release general fertiliser. Plants in pots should be fed fortnightly throughout the year with a water soluble fertiliser. - The right cut: Remove spent flowers regularly and prune the plants back in spring or autumn to keep them bushy. Tattered old plants can be given a new lease on life by cutting up to two thirds of the plant away, ensuring you leave some leaves on the plant.

Pelargonium pizazz! Fill up pots, window boxes, your rock garden, and the openings in cement retaining walls with pelargoniums (more commonly known as Geraniums) in different colours. These plants are ideal to add colour to hot and sunny places. Troubleshooting… Although they are easy to grow and quite tough, they can sometimes be shy to flower profusely. Here are some good tips: - The right soil: Geraniums hate wet feet and heavy, slow draining soil. Use a good quality commercial potting mix for pots, and condition garden soil with lots of compost. - The right food: Keeping these plants hungry for food will cause them to sulk and stop flowering. They are gross feeders and need feeding in the garden every six

- The right way with water: Geraniums are water wise. Only water them when the surface of the soil is dry. • Jasmine time - the October stalwart must be star jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). This versatile creeper with its glossy, dark green foliage and aromatic, pure white flowers, can be used to trail over pergolas and fences and if planted in mass, as groundcovers under trees. It grows well in pots too. • For a year-round visual effect plant Cordyline ‘Electric Pink’ which will give you splashes of vivid pink shades on a naturally multi-stemmed plant. These Cordylines are tough, easy to grow plants and grow to about 1m high x 1m wide. Pests and diseases seldom attack them. Full sun or light shade are perfect for Cordylines and so are large containers. They combine beautifully with soft ornamental grasses in mixed borders, and are great near a swimming pool. Their root systems are not aggressive and they are not messy plants.

Regular water will ensure very lush foliage, but never overdo it, as these plants can survive dry periods once established, without losing their splendour. A general rating will be low to medium water usage. Regular feeding during summer will result in healthy plants with bright and colourful foliage. Use a normal balanced fertiliser. Proudly perennial

Planting lots of different perennials regularly and when in season, means that your garden will have a diverse array of lovely plants throughout the year. ‘Perennial’ normally refers to herbaceous plants which live for more than two years.

It is very trendy to use perennials like bergamot, butterfly bushes (Gaura), shasta daisies, and tall grasses to create wild-looking prairie garden beds this year, and with bergamot in your yard, you will also have the peace of mind to know that you are being kind to garden wildlife!

Absolutely fabulous agapanthus

Bang for your buck!

Perennial agapanthus have been hybridised to give us varieties with longer and repeat flowering capabilities. These plants are very floriferous and tough, withstanding frost and long periods of drought.

Buy these economical indigenous perennials which are widely available: Wild iris (Dietes grandiflora), hairbells (Dierama pendulum), cobra lily (Chasmanthe floribunda), miniature hen and chickens (Chlorophytum ‘Gold Nugget’), C. saundersia and yellow cat’s tail (Bulbine abyssinica). All grow fast and form thick clumps.

‘Buccaneer’ – repeat bloomer, producing white flowers with deep purple stripes. ‘Bingo Blue’ – dark blue flowers from late winter to mid-summer on semi-dwarf plants. ‘Bingo White’ has pure white flowers. Keep agapanthus happy by planting them in full sun or light shade. Water regularly but don’t overdo it, and feed them with a

Rose Care in October

Bedding besties

October is rose month! You can plan a new rose garden or fill up an existing one by visiting your GCA nursery to view new releases, as well as old favourites such as ‘Oklahoma’, ‘South Africa’, ‘Just Joey’ and ‘Satchmo’ which are still top sellers.

Time to colour in your shade. Since the worst cold and frost is now over, invest in New Guinea Impatiens. They are available in colours for every taste. You can also plant impatient power in the sun, by asking for ‘Sunpatiens’ at your GCA nursery.

Although roses dislike disturbance around their roots while growing actively again, they do enjoy the presence of a living mulch. Try a few dainty groundcovers and perennials, and add more colour and romance to the rose garden. Bright colours and flowers to add now include creeping Jenny (Lysimachia ‘Aurea’), cranesbill (Geranium incanum), snow in summer, (Cerastium tomentosum) chives, Brachyscome daisies in different hybrids and colours, bindweed (Convolvulus), candytuft (Iberis sempervirens), corn flowers (Scabiosa) and sweet violet (Viola odorata). The very best living mulch is, of course, the white Sweet Alyssum - it stays compact, does not interfere with the rose roots, is scented, neutral in colour and reseeds itself.

Don’t lose your impatiens… Be sure to put out crushed egg shells around newly planted impatiens, as the snails love their soft leaves and pretty flowers. Love your lawn The appearance of broadleaf weeds on the lawn, patches of discoloured lawn, and even patches of soil where lawn has been completely destroyed, should be dealt with this month. Weeds compete with plants (in this case grass) for moisture, nutrients, light, and space, leaving the lawn looking yellowish brown, and eventually completely weed-ridden. Fertilise your lawn first, water well and keep on mowing. If absolutely necessary, visit your local GCA Garden Centre for advice on what to spray your lawn with.

Study Tips for Students Yes, we know, it’s school holiday at the moment, but year-end finals are just around the corner and if you want to end the year on a high, you should get started now. These study tips will get you in the right mindset to get prepped for your final exams, or just for your average, everyday quiz. Study Alone Unless you’ve got a couple of friends who are super-serious about getting down to business, stay away from group study sessions because they tend to get off-topic pretty quickly. Save the social time till after your exams. Create Your Perfect Study Area The place where you study should be quiet, comfortable and free from distractions. Go to your room, close the door and kill as many distractions as possible -

like music, television, and even the internet and your phone. If you don’t have your own room that you can sneak away to, consider studying at the library instead. Get it All Out Your study materials, that is. Before you dig in, make sure you have all your books, notes, study guides and writing utensils in front of you. Don’t give yourself another excuse to get up and rummage around. Turn Your Notes into Flash Cards

historical fact on one side of the card and the key details on the other side. To study geometry formulas, right the name of the formula on one side and the formula itself on the other side. Snack Healthy While You Study If you want to stay sharp while you study, stay away from junk food. Instead, snack on studying-friendly foods like dark leafy greens, whole grains, peanut butter, milk, and seafood. Feeling sluggish? Caffeine or energy drinks won›t help you in the long run. Get your energy boost instead by eating a banana or an apple.

Now that you’ve got all your notes in front of you, open up a pack of index cards. As you read through the important facts, rewrite them in Narrow it Down Q&A form on the cards. For instance: to study If you try to study historical facts, write the every single thing your

And be sure to bring your flashcards to school with you on the day of the test: you’ll be amazed at how much more you can retain if you run through the cards right before your teacher hands out the test paper. Get Some Sleep You might be tempted to pull an allnighter, but if you do, you’ll only be hurting your chances of getting an A. Get a full 8 hours of sleep so your brain is in good shape on test day. Study All Year Long

Gr 11 Outing Sandton FNB Art Fair By Dominique Steeman (Grade 11) The Grade 11s were very privileged to see Mary Sibande’s work first-hand! First, there was a quick detour to the Sci-Bono Gallery to see the Lascaux Caves Exhibition. The girls were excited to use the provided pigment to create their own little works. In the 3D printed model of the caves, there was an enthralling reproduction of the specific caves, with blackouts every few minutes and neon light exposing the carvings underneath. The hyper-realistic CroMagnon individuals had learners marvelling at the leg hair of the waxworks!

Robots in space By Jasmine Beeforth (Grade 8) The PHSG Robotic girls are researching space as it is the theme for the 2018 First Lego League. This includes the physical and social problems humans face while in space, such as the increased radiation and the isolation. First Lego League’s main aspects (core values) are team bonding, community growth, research, building and engineering. It is an international competition to encourage problem-solving and to encourage enthusiasm about technology. The regional competition will be held on 13 October 2018 at Unisa. As this is the first competition for most of the girls they hope to acquire new skills, such as public speaking, as they will be required to deliver numerous speeches at the competition.

We were ferried from there to the hype that is Sandton. Mary Sibande is known for her monumental depictions of “Sophie” in gargantuan dresses - over-flowing overalls in vivid colours. Her new directions in Virtual Reality were showcased here. As can be imagined, there were very long queues to see this, but it was worth the wait. The purple abstract figures were moving to eerie sounds. Print-making, performance art; mixed media productions, photography and extraordinary sculptures had everyone walking around openmouthed in awe. It was truly a day well-spent.

Huletts Market Day By Fawn Dilettante The Grade 10 Consumer Studies girls held a market day on Wednesday, 12 September to improve their business skills. The girls advertised their baking wares by also dressing up to entice buyers. Many customers crowded the stalls under the almost blooming Jacarandas. This was very successful as the giant chocolate chip cookies were sold out in seconds and, as always, the cupcakes and muffins were winners.

South African Solo Drumming Championships Samantha Meyer, from PHSG, was awarded 3rd place as Junior Tenor Drumming March, Strathspey and Reel in the South African Solo Drumming Championships which were held on Saturday. Samantha is a drummer in the Pretoria Boys High School Pipe Band.

Life is a Garden

A dinosaur delight in the garden Many of us adults are privileged to have enjoyed a hearty childhood. Staying outdoors until sunset, running home with dirt-crusted feet, flushed cheeks, and that shimmer of happiness gleaming in the eyes. Exhilaration was simply a natural part of living, every day. Whether it was building sandcastles out of mud, catching butterflies, or falling out of trees, life had a certain simplistic joy. Today, however, we live in ever-increasingly built-up areas. It may be difficult to give children the daily outdoor time they need in confined spaces. Aside from that, experts are recommending that children spend at least 2 hours per day outdoors, which can be difficult to achieve. A simple activity, like our dinosaur delight in the garden, will invite children to spend time outdoors while it gets them acquainted with the joy of gardening. The idea behind this garden is to encourage children to build a dinosaur world as they imagine it. If children think of items they wish to add that are not on our list, let them go wild! There’s something profoundly rewarding about planting a garden and nurturing it to fruition. Once the dinosaur delight in the garden is complete, add to their dinosaur collection occasionally, and watch the children enjoy the outdoors as they play in their very own creation.

What you will need: An old tyre Some acrylic paint (let your children choose their favourite colour/s) A paintbrush Some potting mix A double layer of weed barrier cloth A staple gun (optional) Small plastic dinosaurs Some small rocks and/or stones Plants (like ferns, moss, Coleus etc.) Let’s get started: Step 1 Give the old tyre a good wash the day before you begin the activity. Consider this the phase where you prep your tools. The tyre needs to be completely dry before you can use it. Step 2 At this point, we’re going to take measures against weeds popping up and invading the children’s creation. You can either use a staple gun to secure a double layer of weed barrier cloth to the tyre, or you can lie a double layer of weed barrier cloth down on the space you’re going to use for your dinosaur delight garden. If you decide on the second option, ensure you’ve

cleared and the ground and made it fairly level.

the bonding and sharing experience of the exercise.

Step 3 The children can now get busy with the paints! Let them make some dinosaur footprints along the top of the tyre, arrows, leaves, or anything else that works with the theme. Remember to leave room for creative play, if it’s not exactly on theme, that’s fine too. Let the children lead with their own ideas. Step 4 Once the paint is dry, you can place the tyre on the weed barrier cloth (if you chose not to staple it to the tyre). Step 5 Fill the inside of the tyre with soil, leaving enough room for the plants you’re going to be adding. Dinosaurs, rocks, and other small items will also need to fit in. At this stage, it’s great to talk to children about soil and its importance in sustaining life. We often take for granted that children understand what soil actually is. It’s so much more than just dirt. Have them feel its texture between their fingers and appreciate that it’s thanks to just a few centimetres of fertile topsoil covering the globe, that we exist. Talking about the world we live in is all part of

Step 6 Now is the most fun part of all. Plant the plants, paying special attention to leaving space for the dinosaurs. Remember to choose plants based on the location of the tyre. Some plants will not thrive in full sun, while others require it. Once your plants are in, it’s time for the dinosaurs make their entry. Place them in position and add rocks, shells, and other items that tie into the theme. A dinosaur delight in the garden If you really enjoyed this exercise, repeat it. If you end up with more than one tyre-garden, you can link them elegantly by extending small bridges across them to each other. Your children could even create a dinosaur village of tyres, over time! Add some grassy plants as a backdrop, like lemongrass or even Elegia elephantina and make it a feature. You’re not just growing a garden, you’re growing confident, proud children at the same time.

Frederick Forsyth

In Hippie, he tells the story of Paulo, a skinny Brazilian with a goatee and long hair, setting off on a journey in search of a deeper meaning for his life. He travels on the famous ‘Death Train to Bolivia’, then on to Peru, later hitchhiking through Chile and Argentina. In the famous Dam Square in Amsterdam, he finds young people playing music while discussing sexual liberation, the expansion of consciousness and the search for an inner truth. There he meets Karla, a Dutch woman in her twenties who has been waiting to find the ideal companion to accompany her on the fabled hippie trail to Nepal. Together with their fellow travellers, they embark on a trip aboard the Magic Bus, heading across Europe and Central Asia to Kathmandu. For everyone, the journey is transformative. For Paulo and Karla it is a life-defining love story that leads to choices that will set the course of the rest of their lives.

Most weapons do what you tell them. Most weapons you can control. But what if the most dangerous weapon in the world isn’t a smart missile or a stealth submarine or even an AI computer programme? What if it’s a 17-year-old boy with a blisteringly brilliant mind, who can run rings around the most sophisticated security services across the globe, who can manipulate that weaponry and turn it against the superpowers themselves? How valuable would he be? And what wouldn’t you do to get hold of him?

A fellow musician saw him wearing a yellow and black striped sweater one evening and naturally felt the name was descriptive and fitting. October 3rd 1969 - Gwen Stefani Stefani wasn’t always the frontwoman of No Doubt—in fact, her older brother, Eric, actually persuaded her to join the group as a backup vocalist in the late ’80s. “I wasn’t doing anything, and Eric would say, ‘Come in here and sing with me!’ ” Stefani once said. The band was actually formed by John Spence, the original vocalist, who came up with the name No Doubt. A year after the band formed, Spence committed suicide. Eric has said that tragedy nearly destroyed the nascent group. “I guess I didn’t really know him,” Stefani once said. “He was hurting so badly that he couldn’t talk to anyone about it.” The group’s responsibilities shifted; Stefani took over the lead vocals and her older brother began creating the band’s logo for T-shirts and fliers. His new position foreshadowed his eventual career shift: A few years in, Eric left the band and became an animator on The Simpsons.
