The Winter Solstice might have come and gone, but the news that the second half of our winter is always the coldest does not help with the winter blues. Our mid-year holidays are upon us and it is important for moms to stay on their toes without getting down because of the weather. Here are 5 ways to make sure you do not get the winter blues. 1. No matter how cold it gets – go outside and get fresh air! The biggest mistake you can make is to lock yourself up in your house or office. Take some time to go outside and enjoy a little afternoon sun – even during winter our midday sun is very pleasant. So go get some Vitamin D! 2. Yes it may sounds cliché – but exercise!
3. Eat Healthy, stay fit, and feel good. Even if you are exercising it is important to eat healthy too. So often we will stock up on junk food to snack on during winter when we are spending more time at home. No one likes gaining weight – which might become a trigger on increasing our depression during winter. So dump the junk food and make sure your grocery cupboard is stocked with healthy choices. 4. Make plans to hang out with friends! During winter we often get stuck in a routine which becomes annoying and monotonous. No matter how cold, or how busy you are, make time to spend with friends. Friends can definitely prevent you from catching the winter blues!
Don’t just binge on Netflix – do some 5. Have some “ME” time. physical activity. Yoga is known for being a great indoors activity that can This is the most important. Taking time help you gain flexibility, balance and for a hobby or simply a nice bubble spiritual strength while you are working bath while listening to your favourite out. Not to mention that it will give music can go a long way towards you a reason to get out of bed on lazy warding off those winter blues! mornings.
Dingoes
The Dingo is a wild dog found in Australia. Its exact ancestry is debated, but Dingoes are generally believed to be descended from semi-domesticated dogs from East and South Asia, which turned to a wild lifestyle when introduced to Australia.
Queensland alone, it is estimated that there are between 200,000 and 350,000 Dingoes. In recent years organisations such as the Dingo Study Foundations and Australian Native Dog Foundations have dedicated themselves to studying this breed.
Dingoes are one of the few successful cases of feral dogs thriving in the wild, and while it is illegal to keep one as a pet in its native Australia, there are some who do so anyway.
Description: Dingoes have intense eyes that vary from yellow to orange. The very mobile, small round ears are naturally erect. The well furred, appearing bushy tail is relaxed and has good length .The hindquarters are lean and muscular. The coat is soft and length, density and texture vary according to climate. Typical coat colours are yellow-ginger, but can occur in tan, black or white, including an occasional brindle; albinos have also been seen. All purebred Dingoes have white hair on their feet and tail tip. Unlike most other breeds, Dingoes do not have dewclaws. (Dewclaws, also known as a dog’s thumb, refers to a vestigial digit found on the foot of most mammals)
The first Dingo was registered in the London Zoo in 1828; it was simply referred to as the Australian Dog. It was originally brought to the Australian continent by human settlers several thousand years ago, but once the Dingo strayed away from human control it formed complex packs. As a fast canine predator, the Dingo feeds off rabbits and other small animals as well as farmers’ livestock. This is also why many Australians consider the dog to be vermin. In the Australian state of
Temperament: The Dingo has never been
fully domesticated. It is almost never kept as a companion. This is partly due to its remote isolation, but also though lack of human intervention. Dingoes can be kept as pets if taken from their litter before 6 weeks of age. At this young age they can be tamed, but they should not be taken once they are 10 weeks or older. The Dingo has some interesting traits – a great tree climber and at times a bit aloof.
Even so, pups frequently fall prey to snakes. Families of Dingoes can be heard vocalising together before a hunt. They have strong cooperative instincts and live in packs. These groups habitually hunt by night; they work silently and only learn to bark from association with other canines. They communicate by a distinctive yelp or howl. The Dingo may hunt alone or in family units, but rarely in packs. Water is a barrier to Dingoes and most will only wade, not swim. Facing Retrenchment? Careers look very different to how they did in the past where many people started in a job when they were 18 and stayed within that same company until they were ready to retire. Organisations now no longer offer lifetime employment, the shift has been away from organisations being prepared to develop you into what they want (having the time to do it over a lifetime), to buying your services as is ‘plug and play’ if you will. This means it is up to the individual to be marketable and employable.
they still have not made decisions about the restructuring” are the norm. This is a victim mentality- where I need to wait and see what the decision is and whether my position is safe or not before I can do anything!
No! Don’t wait, start getting your ducks in a row now! Like the saying goes, ‘where there is smoke there is fire’, you can start thinking of a plan and acting on it, before you literally see the fire with your own eyes. I liken looming retrenchment to the analogy to a person standing on a beach, Retrenchment is not personal; it is just a looking at a distant yet approaching tidal business decision. It has become a sign of wave and deciding that they would only the times. We need to continuously rerun once they actually felt the water on invent ourselves in this changing world. their face. Also don’t see smoke and think Besides our kids are watching; and riding “that’s it I’m going to be retrenched”, the waves of change will certainly be part rather see it as a possibility to always of their future way of life. be ready, even if you end up surviving that round of retrenchments - there will Some tips when facing possible be another right behind. Who knows, retrenchments are to not wait until you get you may end up in the new organisation ‘the retrenchment letter’ before you start seeing smoke of retrenchments there too! making and implementing plans. Many times folk take on the ‘paralysed’ approach Career transition is not easy and not and conversations like “I just wish the cheap either, so don’t wait…be proactive. company would tell me what is happening, A proactive response will be less traumatic
than a reactive one. Not just for you, but for your whole family. You may be asking; well what can I start with? I would like to look at some practical things. · Live within your means and save like crazy! It takes time to transition, whether it is starting your own business or looking for another job, there may be many months where you don’t receive a salary. Downgrade, get rid of debt. This is not about denying yourself but about getting prepared to stretch your resources. · Talk to the family and friends and get them on board. Don’t try and hide the fact that you are being retrenched, it is not a shame, it is the new normal. Like I said, our kids will go through this many times; they need to see us do it well. Sometimes the kids can pick up that something is going on and they create their own little worries in their mind, like “maybe I will have to get rid of my hamster as we won’t have enough money for hamster food”- talk to them, let them share their worries, sometimes their little concerns are so big in their eyes, but so small in ours. By talking and listening, you can see where their hearts are at and reassure them. Makes me think of our Heavenly Father who supplies all our needs and how we worry about such small things sometimes. · Get off that couch! Maybe have a pity party for one day, then chin up and get on with it! Self-pity is not your friend, it may seem nice to wallow for a while, but it will drag you down. If it’s getting tough to make sense of being at home, seek help - you don’t have to do this on your own. · Start positive habits: exercise, healthy
eating, getting outdoors, family time. Watch out for your weak spotsalcohol, addictions, and grumpiness. Put measures in place to protect you from these things. You have enough on your plate, without compounding and creating new issues. They may give you a temporary fix, but they hurt your self-esteem in the long run and actually a good self-esteem is something you need to give you the confidence to put yourself out there in the market. · Ditch the cable TV! It will save you money, but more so, you are going to need the time to plan for the future. Making yourself employable and marketable is your new after-hours job. · Get your CV out there and start going to interviews, or practice role-playing with a friend. It can take a very long time to get another job, so start whilst you still have one. · Think about skills/ hobbies you have and whether, even if just for a short season you could make some money off these skills e.g.: cabinet making, catering, coaching etc.… Two questions I like to ask myself when considering turning a talent/hobby into an income: What am I good at? What is in front of me? (In other words what can I start with now, what do I have access to). · Could you start a business one day or even now on the side? Start researching, do the ground work. What skills will you need, start getting those skills. It is easier to slowly transition into your own business whilst still getting a salary elsewhere. Check out current restraint of trade or current work policies where you may need to declare a conflict of interests.
Be wise, don’t buy a restaurant when you don’t even know how to fry an egg! · Start saving for your own tools of the trade- this will differ for each person, but generally it is a laptop, drivers license, car, internet access and a phone that any business needs. · Up-skill. You may have some extra time on your hands; use this to up-skill. Look for industry relevant courses; look at what accreditations/ qualifications job adverts are asking for. If starting your own business do an accounting course, learn about online marketing. Research the institutes you study through carefully, if looking for formal qualifications you want them to be through recognised institutes. If you want to just teach yourself without getting the formal certificate, there are some brilliant online courses available for free. · Nurture friendships. You are going to need people around you to encourage and support you. Don’t get mad when people say stupid things and suggest silly ideas, they are just trying to help. Be kind. · Be humble. You may have to do a job that you always felt was ‘beneath you’ or that you are ‘overqualified’ for. Be faithful with the small things. · Network, ask, learn, volunteer, read, research, Google, attend, listen. We need to be lifelong learners.
My point is that these are things that you can start with now. They can happen parallel to your current job and alongside each other as well. While sending out CV’s, you should be thinking of ideas for your own business, what hobby you can make money off in the meantime and how you can cut back on your expenses. I so often hear people complaining that they can only do something with the rest of their life, once they know what decision the company is going to make. Start acting on these things now. Don’t wait. Each of these things takes time. Exiting a job is traumatic, and the pain of this can be greatly reduced if you have some good things in place already. However, having said all this- continue to do your current job to the best of your ability, finish strong. For those who may have already been retrenched. Keep going, don’t give up. There is a plan and a purpose for your life (Jeremiah 29: 11). You are about to be reminded of a beautiful truth; it is not company A, B or C who is your Provider, but Father God Himself.

occasional bright red or orange leaf occurs adding to the overall attractiveness of this plant. Scented flowers, hanging from hairy stalks, appear in spring. They are bell-shaped, white to creamy yellow and male and female flowers occur on different trees. The fruits, borne throughout summer, are fleshy berries that turn scarlet when ripe. They are enclosed in inflated, bladderlike capsules that dry to red and remain on the tree for many months after the fruit has fallen and so may be found on the trees at almost any time of the year. This tree can be found naturally in forests, on mountain slopes and in rocky places. It has a
wide distribution occurring in all the provinces of South Africa and stretching as far North as Ethiopia. The neat growth habit, glossy dark green leaves and masses of red fruit make this an excellent tree for the garden. It can be planted as an accent plant, particularly in a small garden where space is limited. As it is decorative and responds so well to clipping it is an outstanding plant to grow as a hedge. The Bladder-nut makes an attractive container plant for the patio and is also a good species for bonsai. It attracts birds to the garden and sweetly scented flowers add that something special to the garden.

Windmills at Tampakika on the weeping island of Chios, Greece (J Theron 2016).
Perhaps the greatest lesson we learn in this life is that original structures and functions change: that change is the only constant, and in that we should find reassurance and not battle this motion with fear. This month, we have an honoured guest for our Medical moments from the cookie jar. Professor Michael Pepper, Director of the Institute for Cellular and Molecular Medicine (amongst others) at the University of Pretoria gives us his expert insight into the highly topical field of genomics, and editing of the human genetic code. So with no further ado, I hand over to the professor.
course by the question some may ask: “Do we have the right to play God?” Why you might ask would one want to rewrite the DNA code? If by changing the letters in the script one could correct a genetic defect and effect healing, the answer would seem obvious and probably acceptable to most. If on the other hand one wanted to promote the emergence of a genetically enhanced or superior individual or group of individuals, a series of complex discussions would ensue. The issue of playing God would to some extent depend on whether or not you embrace the idea that God enables us to effect healing using the complex tools that he reveals to us.
“Imagine a world in which we could, at will, re-write the genetic code of living organisms. Exciting to some, terrifying to others. Pervaded of In December 2015 I had the privilege
Genome editing and the genomics revolution of attending a Gene Editing Summit in Washington DC. On this occasion individuals from around the world representing diverse professional backgrounds and cultures came together to address the ethical, legal and social issues related to editing the human genome at will. The takehome message for me was that from the research perspective, gene editing is acceptable within local (and global) regulatory and ethical/moral frameworks. This is true for the DNA of both somatic cells (the cells that make up our bodies) and germline cells (gametes – egg and sperm). From a therapeutic perspective however, although somatic gene editing provides a very exciting and globally acceptable opportunity, editing the human germline for therapeutic (or preventative) purposes raises many important questions for which there are currently no answers. These include altering the course of natural evolution (with unpredictable consequences) and eugenics (briefly touched on above). A strong commitment was shared by all present at the Summit that the scientific community should not proceed in the direction of therapeutic/preventative human
germline gene editing, but that other forms of gene editing are acceptable and should be encouraged. Having studied and worked in the “north” and the “south”, and now being located in the “south”, I have often been asked whether technological advances such as gene editing are indeed relevant to emerging economies given the need to focus on more pressing priorities such basic education and health, as well as food security. We live in a country, South Africa, which has one of the highest levels of HIV positivity, most of the affected individuals being in the economically-active segment of the population. My own research will hopefully see the implementation of advanced technologies in the genomics field (including gene therapy) in a country in which the number of HIV positive individuals on anti-retroviral therapy is far below 100%. Can one justify advanced technologies in the face of an inability to meet basic needs? The answer does not appear to lie exclusively in the notion of distributive justice, i.e. equal access for all, but rather in the principles of health economics: if it makes sense from an
economic perspective, then everyone stands to benefit. Too little has been done in my opinion to accurately estimate the benefits that would be derived from implementing the fruits of the genomics era (including gene editing and gene therapy) on a large scale in the developing world. This approach would require a calculation of the costs for instance of lifelong therapy for communicable diseases such as HIV, genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease and familial hypercholesterolemia, and contrasting this to the cost of a once off diagnostic test or therapeutic procedure. Practically this would include for example the institution of newborn screening programmes in the public sector (currently only available to the privileged minority in the private sector) and the application of gene editing and gene therapy for diseases including those mentioned above, bearing in mind the significant cost reduction that would occur with economies of scale.
that it will be possible to approach leaders in government and business to convince them of the urgent need to bring current and future genomics technologies to our shores which will be to the benefit of all of our citizens.” I’d like to thank Prof Pepper for his time and his incredible insight into this topic. Wahlberg’s Eagle Recently we were sitting in our garden in Garsfontein, on a Sunday afternoon when we spotted an eagle circling above. An incredibly beautiful dark brown bird, with an impressive wingspan which we estimated to be at least 100cm, it appeared to be very interested in our neighbours little yorkies. Local birdwatchers suggested that it was a Wahlberg’s Eagle – but we cannot be 100% sure.

The False Gospel We are studying grace but grace is a frail thing and one can easily be mislead into thinking that you are walking in God’s grace when you’re not. That was the case with the Galatian churches who had ‘fallen from God’s grace’ (Gal 5:4). Paul wrote them a letter to warn them about a ‘false gospel’ which he was accusing them of. Gal 1:6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are following a different gospel 7 not that there really is another gospel, but there are some who are disturbing you and wanting to distort the gospel of Christ. (NET) Paul is very serious in this letter – he does not hold back. He uses language like ‘I’m shattered’, ‘you are under a spell’, ‘condemned to hell’ (twice), ‘accursed’, ‘Christ is of no benefit to you’, ‘you’ve fallen from grace’, ‘my work in you was in vain’, ‘I am perplexed by you’ etc. What could they have done to provoke Paul’s wrath? They followed a different gospel – that’s what. Paul explains that he received the gospel directly from God Himself but now the churches have turned to a gospel that Paul never preached. And the people responsible
Part 5
for this: most likely Jews who turned people away from the true gospel to a mixture of gospel and Jewish Law. And according to Paul that constitutes a false gospel. In Gal 2:15 – 2:21 Paul takes on Peter and explains the gospel to him! He starts off with the words ‘yet we know that no one is justified by the works of the Law’ (verse 16 NET). So do not be mistaken; Galatians is about the Law. It is about the fact that mixing any amount Law into the gospel constitutes a false gospel. Paul takes on the Law in 26 different verses and circumcision (also Law) in another 8. Then he also talks about the ‘weak and beggarly’ system (still the Law). He also refers to special days and seasons and years (4:10) that the Galatian churches observed. That is more Jewish Law. So Paul addresses the Law directly at least 36 times in Galatians; and never in a positive way. But why is Paul so opposed to the Law of Moses? Many churches to this day still read it every Sunday. Could they be wrong? The shocking truth is that they are wrong. Read Galatians and you will see how Paul slates
the Law. In 2:19 Paul tells Peter that he died to the Law. Then in 2:21 he says that if you try to keep the Law, you are frustrating God’s grace and Jesus died in vain! (KJV) This simply means that Law and grace are utterly and completely incompatible. In 3:10 Paul shows us that if we try to keep the Law, we come under a curse – For all who rely on doing the works of the Law are under a curse (NET). The curse is actually multipronged as described in Deut 28:1568. Apart from those curses Paul also curses anyone who preaches this false gospel (1:8, 9). This is certainly serious and that is why Paul does not mince his words. Let me summarise the bone chilling results of this false gospel in a believer’s life according to Paul: • We come under multiple curses (1:8, 9 & 3:10). • We alienate the Holy Spirit (3:2, 3). • We forfeit God’s grace (2:21 & 5:4). • We alienate Jesus (4:19 & 5:4). • We forfeit all the benefits that we had in Jesus (5:2). • We have to keep the whole Law – all 613 commandments (5:3). • We become slaves – we lose our freedom (5:1 & 4:24). • We lose our inheritance (4:4-7 & 4:30 & Rom 4:14). Due to space restrictions I cannot go deeper into these issues but please read the letter to the Galatians; it takes no more than 1520 minutes. Read it several times until the message starts to resonate in your spirit. This is a very serious matter; make sure you get it.
The problem in Galatians is the Law of Moses or any part thereof; be it tithing, Sabbath, circumcision or feast days; it represents a false gospel – Judaism. And Judaism is a religion. Christianity in contrast is not a religion – it is a relationship with the risen Jesus. The difference may seem trivial but it’s not; the Jewish Law or any form of legalism contaminates the gospel and our relationship with Jesus as we saw. Many churches and individuals are currently turning back to the Jewish traditions – i.e. the Law. That was exactly Paul’s problem with the Galatian churches and it was this practice that prompted him to say: I fear for you that my work for you may have been in vain. (4:11 NET) He also tells them that they lost Jesus (4:19). Hear Paul in 4:9 But now that you have come to know God (or rather to be known by God), how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless basic forces? Do you want to be enslaved to them all over again? (NET) The Law is weak and desperately poor; not to mention that it is slavery. How can anyone who experienced Jesus and a relationship with Him go back to that? That is Paul’s question. Note that he says that they are returning to this system. So Paul shows that the Law and idolatry (where they came from) are one and the same! And he is right; they both have religion at their core – doing works to please your god. Don’t go there! The false gospel takes our eyes off from Jesus and focuses it on the Law. We exchange Jesus for works! We are led by the Law rather than the Spirit (Rom 7:6). Remember that He wants a relationship with you above all else. He wants you and all of you. Next month we bury the Law for good. It all started out in the mid 80’s at a local BP garage in the East of Pretoria. Ridgewood Motors is situated in Camellia Avenue in Lynwood Ridge and the owner Mike Ruane had a workshop with some very special mechanics working for him. Jaap Van Tilburg who was already in his 70’s then had done his apprenticeship with Jaguar in Coventry, he later returned to South Africa and owned Van Tilburg Motors in Pretoria and was very involved in motor racing (Car and motorcycle). His right hand man was George Walker the Scotsman who had emigrated to South Africa after retiring as Jackie Stewart’s (three times Formula 1 world champion) chief mechanic. These two made a formidable team in the workshop and Jaguar owners would bring their
cars from as far as Cape Town and Zimbabwe to have Jaap and George get their precious cats purring again. One of these clients was an ambassador from the local German embassy who would regularly bring his already very hot E-Type Jaguar in to have it tweaked. On a particular day while the E-Type was in the shop, the ambassador phoned and asked if he could drop his teenage nephew off at the garage to have a look at how things were going. The nephew was visiting South Africa for his school holidays, and back home was involved in motor racing and had even become champion of Formula something or other. This young man spent the morning watching these two fine Jaguar men doing their thing and was very involved in asking questions and even giving some advice. Of course the advice
was taken with a pinch of salt as what advice could a young know it all teenager give to these two fine mechanics!

This did not deter him as some down time and to their he excitedly claimed to know what horror they heard the roar of the the problem was and how to fix it – E-Type as it started up and raced under much duress, the mechanics out of the workshop and into the checked the cars rear suspension neighborhood. How were they going and the problem was found and to explain this to the owner of this fixed exactly as this young kid had collector’s item and uncle to the claimed. hooligan! They were still in a frantic debate with Mike the garage owner A few years later this young man when they heard the familiar roar better known as Michael Schumacher as the E-Type raced back in to the would excel to become 7-time workshop. Formula 1 World Champion and arguably the best racing driver of all The excited teenager jumped out time!

Water is Precious – Use it Sparingly and help prevent the next world war! Tips to Save Water: • Install a low-flow shower head and tap aerators where possible. • Use a dual-flush toilet cistern. • Try to plant indigenous or drought resistant shrubs in your garden. • Water gardens before 06H00 or after 18H00 and only when necessary. • Collect rainwater for re-use in the garden and for washing cars. • Use a broom instead of the hosepipe when cleaning patios and driveways. • Cover your swimming pool to reduce water evaporation. • Shower rather than bath. • Close the tap while brushing your teeth and shaving. • Regularly check for and repair all leaks on taps and toilets. Keep your water bills low: • Do a water audit and see where water is being wasted. • Identify ways to economise your water usage. • Repair leaks on pipes, taps and toilets. • Re-use water wherever possible.
