World Stroke Day – 29 October World Stroke Day is commemorated to raise awareness of the symptoms of a stroke. Approximately 60 people die every day in our country as a result of strokes! The good news is a stroke doesn’t need to be a death sentence. Knowing the signs of a stroke and seeking immediate medical help can improve the outcome of the stroke. The symptoms of a stroke appear suddenly and often there are more than one symptom at the same time. The symptoms of a stroke include: • • • • • • • •
Sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm or leg on one side of the body Confusion Loss of speech, or trouble speaking or understanding speech Trouble seeing in one or both eyes Unexplained dizziness Loss of balance or trouble with walking Severe or unusual headache Difficulty swallowing

I am regularly asked about the face of Featz, who is our fearless leader? Felix is a wire hair terrorist or is that terrier. Meeting Felix you will never say he is eight years old. He suffers from ADHD and gives a new meaning to hyperactive. This four-legged member of our family has a huge personality and his natural dominance made it clear that any business venture we started would never succeed without his stamp of approval. Felix spends his days patrolling the office ensuring everything runs smoothly and that there is no slacking off by anyone. He has taken it upon himself to make sure we are never interrupted and that any unwanted guests – mostly lizards and the occasional pigeon or Robyn- do not receive any undue attention. The patrolling duty does not interrupt his extended naps on the couch. Felix loves all people and will gladly befriend any visitors. Word of warning on this point, when you visit us, please do not ignore him. Felix will demand a greeting and will not let up on you until you pay him the attention he demands. Dogs, however, are never welcome – Felix considers himself above socialising with dogs.
able to plant anything without asking him to move out of the way. Pool maintenance is a favourite pass time and his head is always in there first. However, the biggest treat of all is spending some bonding time with dad and a few power tools. (Turning any task into an eventful experience.) If you want to adopt a family member, one who will be a true companion, you will not go wrong with a wire hair terrier. Just keep in mind, these guys are demanding little bullies, they need a lot of attention and regular exercise. They do not do very well with training, not because they are not intelligent, simply because they are very strong willed and prefer to do things their own way. We learnt that the hard way when we were asked to leave puppy school. The highly recommended trainer found Felix to be too disruptive and gently recommended we do not return. The movie makers of Tintin perfectly captured the wire hair terrier’s personality. This little breed not only has the heart of a lion, they believe they are lions. That is Felix – the heart, soul and smile – behind Featz Publishing.
Our little “terrorist” has an amazing sense of humour and enjoys nothing more than teasing the family members. Until meeting Felix I would not have believed that possible. While Felix is my husband’s dog, he is not selfish with his affection and will make sure everyone gets an equal amount of love and attention. Felix is hard working – no tasks at work or home happens without his curious supervision. While gardening he might not get his paws dirty, but you are not

Yes, there is so much more to this chap than just the musician who candidly hops onto bar counters while shredding out a guitar solo or swinging from the roof beams while playing the harmonica with his band. Did you know his first guitar that he taught himself to play on was scraped out of a school dustbin and glued back together and almost unplayable as it was he couldn’t put it down? Fortunately, his Grandmother left him some cash in her will 26 years ago and this allowed him to purchase a decent steel string acoustic guitar. He still has it today and every song he has ever written has been composed on that same guitar. He proudly boasts that his collection has now expanded to eight guitars, the dustbin guitar, even though it was given away years ago, he is sure found its way back to the bin again. He has recorded and released two albums so far and the third is now in production and is scheduled for release next year. Brad loves all music and this shows in his multigenre song writing. He describes all his songs as “well incubated, lyrically loaded, melodic rock and ballads” although you will find some blues, reggae, folk and country roots in his song writing too. He does not consider himself as a commercial composer at all, but more of an authentic composer and his music still appeals to people of all ages and tastes. Besides the silly antics, you’ll see on stage while he performs, there is depth to this man’s character, he is a dedicated family man and he has a social consciousness as well, you will notice this in his lyrics. He noticed that during his life many people
and often strangers sought him out for counselling on many different levels and he revelled in the process, so besides the fundraising gigs, and guitar workshops, he affirms that his mission statement is “to have touched, empowered, uplifted, enlightened, motivated and inspired everyone with my music, lyrics and words.” He now intends to step up to this statement and to enter the public speaking arena as an inspirational coach with a unique concept of using musical loops to depict various levels of personal and corporate development and to facilitate positive transformation. He openly reveals that it is quite scary but he is up for the challenge and loving the research and planning that he is putting in. Brad promises that he will never stop performing music live as he loves engaging with audiences too much. If you wish to engage with him you can find him on the following links:

omen’s health and the types of cancers prevalent among women is the theme of CANSA’s Women’s Health campaign being held during October. The key message is for women to keep themselves informed about the dreaded disease so that they can recognise early warning signs and know how to reduce their risk.
See the signs
Of all the gynaecologic cancers, only cervical has a screening test. The Pap smear can help detect cancer early when treatment can be the most effective. Since there is no simple and reliable way to screen for the other cancers prevalent in women, it’s especially important to recognise their “The focus of our Women’s Health warning signs and to learn about ways campaign is mainly on breast and in which to reduce risk. cervical cancers,” says CANSA Chief Executive Officer, Elize Joubert. Knowledge is power
Reduce risk
It was Lindiwe Ntuli-Tloubatla’s knowledge of cancer and how to fight it that helped her through her battle with a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer. The Nelspruit-based gender and human rights activist also had firsthand experience of the disease with several members of her family being cancer survivors, including her sister, as well has Lindiwe herself having had a brush with cancer a few years earlier.
The overall goal of CANSA’s campaign is to improve women’s health and wellbeing by encouraging women to ensure they have the knowledge to put in place their own risk reduction measures. Through its campaign, CANSA is providing access to information that enables people to make healthy lifestyle choices. CANSA also encourages screening and early detection.
“At first the prognosis was so bad, I was told to get my affairs in order,” she says. But she persevered, got a second opinion and embarked on a treatment regime which she describes as “brutal”. “Throughout the treatment and recovery processes, I kept myself informed and was very fortunate to be surrounded by people who helped me with my battle.” One of those people was Sister Rhona from CANSA’s Care Centre in Nelspruit. “She was a Godsend,” says Lindiwe. “She advised me how to regain mobility, showing me which exercises would help; and she introduced me to the concept breast prostheses. I wouldn’t have known about them otherwise.”
Throughout October, information will be disseminated through media, health talks, fund-raising events, including breast cancer walks; and screenings at CANSA Care Clinics and Mobile Health Clinics. The History of Halloween
Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats. ANCIENT ORIGINS OF HALLOWEEN Halloween’s origins date back to the

ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an

important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter. By 43 A.D., the Roman Empire had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of “bobbing” for apples that is practiced today on Halloween. On May 13, 609 A.D., Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome in honor of all Christian martyrs, and the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day was established in the Western church. Pope Gregory III (731–741) later expanded the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs, and moved the observance from May 13
to November 1. By the 9th century the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands, where it gradually blended with and supplanted the older Celtic rites. In 1000 A.D., the church would make November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day to honor the dead. It is widely believed today that the church was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. All Souls Day was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels and devils. The All Saints Day celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints’ Day) and the night before it, the traditional night of Samhain in the Celtic religion, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween.

Pavetta Lanceolata – Weeping Bride’s Bush In full bloom, the Weeping Brides Bush looks like a bride adorned in pure white, full of expectation and hope for a long and happy life. It is an evergreen shrub, up to 5m high, regularly decussately branched. The bark is greyish white. The leaves are decussate, elliptic, apex acute, base wedge-shaped, margins entire dark green, shiny leathery, with bacterial nodules scattered all over the surface of the leaves, visible as small, dark spots, small hairy tufts are often present in the axils of the main and secondary veins on the lower surface; the leaves are shortly petiolate with interpetiole stipules. The leaves have a characteristic spicy potato

The calyx has a short tube with four short, acute lobes. The corolla is tubular below, 4-lobed above with the lobes held rectangular to the tube, pure white, but the very tips of the lobes are green when freshly opened and sweetly scented. The stamens are exserted, places between the corolla lobes, greenish, turning yellow and finally black with age. The style is long exserted and greenish turning black with age. when partially protected by other plants. Seedlings transplant fairly well. They need a lot of water initially. Once established they will tolerate full sun and some drought. Birds distribute the seeds, but fruits falling from the trees also germinate quite easily and one will soon find lots of seedlings under trees and bushes where they have been deposited by birds. Plants cultivated from seed grow slowly initially, but once established, will quickly fill an empty space and form a good screen. Large bushes will tolerate light pruning when necessary.
The weeping brides bush is not threatened in any way at this stage. The bush is fairly common in the summer rainfall areas of South Africa. It often grows in association with other bush clumps, on forest margins and river banks. The sweetly scented flowers attract many pollinators such as birds, bees, wasps, beetles and ants. These, in turn, attract birds and other predators. Birds love the fruits. In the past, the flowers of the Pavetta species were probably used in traditional wedding ceremonies. This densely leafy, evergreen plant can be effectively used as a hedge or screen. If it is to be used on its own as an accent plant, it is always better to plant two or three plants together. This will ensure a very beautiful display of pure white brightness in your garden during summertime. Seedlings and young plants seem to do better
The leaves are sometimes attacked by green caterpillars with stinging hairs. Although they can quickly defoliate some branches and cause skin irritations, this pest is not too serious and often they disappear before you need to use any chemical poison.

Tristan Albatross for Tristan
O
ctober is the month that my daughter, Tristan, celebrates her birthday and for that reason, our bird for this month has to be the Tristan Albatross – especially for Tristan! The Tristan Albatross is a large seabird from the Albatross family. One of the great Albatrosses, it was widely recognised as a full species in 1998. It is practically indistinguishable from the wandering Albatross at sea; the Tristan Albatross is smaller and has a slightly darker back. The Tristan Albatross is 110cm and has a wingspan of 3.05m. The Tristan Albatross also never attains the full white plumage of the wandering

Albatross, and its bill is about 25mm shorter. The Tristan Albatross feeds on fish and cephalopods. They breed biennially and will nest in wet heath from 400 to 700m in elevation. They are monogamous and do not start breeding until they are about 10 years old. Due to the difficulty in distinguishing them from wandering Albatrosses, their distribution at sea is still not fully known, but the use of satellite tracking has shown that they forage widely in the South Atlantic, with males foraging west of the breeding islands towards South America and females to the east towards

Africa. There have been sightings near Brazil and also off the coast of Australia. Tristan Albatrosses are endemic to the islands of the Tristan da Cunda group and more specifically Gough Island. The majority of the world’s population nest on Gough Island, around 1500 pairs. They were formally threatened by the introduced species, rats, cats and pigs, but these have now been removed from their breeding islands. However, this resulted in the population of mice increasing to a point where they would eat and kill albatross chicks en masse. Even though the chicks are huge compared to the mice, they do not know how to defend themselves appropriately. Today the main threat to the species is believed to be long-line fishing and these mice. Recent counts suggest that the population on Gough has decreased by 28% over 46 years. The Tristan Albatross was given Critically Endangered status in 2008.

Medical moments from the cookie jar: The authenticity emergency
Dr. Joji Mercier
So lately I’ve noticed in this social mediadriven existence, a trend of fixing everything by numbers. Five things to do to make the man of your dreams fall in love with you. Eight steps to a happier you. Three easy ways to make your boss think you walk on water. Have a fulfilling and lasting relationship with 4 essential principles. Fifteen food groups that will give you Einstein’s brain, Warren Buffett’s bank account and make you look like Jennifer Lawrence or Idris Alba. And my reaction to these are a mixture of rebellion to the notion of a ‘one size fits all’ philosophy, a mild anxiety about how on earth I’m going remember all these points, and being totally overwhelmed with more expectations on implementing all these pearls of wisdom in an already impossibly busy life.
telling me that there is an emergency. I immediately jumped up, dashing for the door, asking who was dying, ready to resuscitate. I was met with a very confused look; no, we are 10 minutes late in starting analysis of this morning’s blood tests. I irritably sat down with my half-finished coffee, muttering ‘if no one is dying, there is no emergency’.
Therefore I’ve decided not to write this month’s article to give you more things to do, to remember, to schedule into a finite 24 hours each day. Yes, all the advice on getting enough sleep, healthy diets and not sitting too long are all valid, but I think fundamentally we all know this. Facts and figures are relatively easy to forget, and in this age of instant technology, nothing that is quantifiable remains un-googled for long. Thus, as I teach the young soon-tobe doctors, it’s a philosophy, an understanding of the unquantifiable, and way of thinking, that lays the foundation of sustained and individual success. Remember, perspective colours all situations. After working as a full-time trauma doctor for some time, I moved into a more cerebral laboratory based space in chemical pathology. During the first week, one of my new colleagues rushed in flustered, distressed,
But….that takes courage! So many of our drivers are based and rooted in fear: Saying ‘No’ to things that overcrowd you may flame that fear of rejection. Maybe you were a born disruptor, someone who swims upstream, and by being true to that, you face negative judgement, abandonment or social isolation. But it precisely those people who change history! I’m talking Galileo Galilei (the earth was round), Steve Jobs, the first doctors that treated cancer with chemotherapy, Emmeline Pankhurst on the suffragette movement. They had lives fraught with hardship and persecution BUT: they had meaning and a purpose, and remained true to themselves.
24
And this has become an adopted filter in many people’s lives that intersect with mine. When they get flustered, it is always quantified against the yardstick of someone about to die: and calm ensures. But today, as an exception to the dying rule, I’m going to speak about a real emergency that doesn’t necessarily involve shuffling off this mortal coil. IT IS AN EMERGENCY TO BE YOURSELF!
You see, you are completely unique. Each of you have your very own genetic blueprint; about 3 billion base-pairs, constituting 20-

Halloween Traditions The American Halloween tradition of “trick-or-treating” probably dates back to the early All Souls’ Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called “soul cakes” in return for their promise to pray for the family’s dead relatives. The distribution of soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits. The practice, which was referred to as “going a-souling” was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food, and money. The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic
roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter.

More Confusion Last month we saw that the Covenant of Moses was broken and also that we as gentiles were never included under it. I also stated that it was simply given to Israel to show them that no one can please God through works. And make no mistake, this was a works-based covenant: Gal 3:12 But the law is not based on faith, but the one who does the works of the law will live by them. (NET)
• At the cross God broke the covenant of Moses, re-instated the covenant of Abraham for the Jews (the so-called New Covenant mentioned in Heb 8). Now the Jews and gentiles were united under the same covenant.
I hope this is now clearer. Abraham’s covenant is an everlasting covenant and in Gal 3 Paul points out that the covenant of Moses could not replace it. Note that in But where is the New Covenant – I only listed Galatians where Paul explains covenants (in two covenants: that of Abraham and Moses? women identify their future husbands and reassuring them that they would someday— with luck, by next Halloween—be married. In 18th-century Ireland, a matchmaking cook might bury a ring in her mashed potatoes on Halloween night, hoping to bring true love to the diner who found it. In Scotland, fortunetellers recommended that an eligible young woman name a hazelnut for each of her suitors and then toss the nuts into the fireplace. The nut that burned to ashes rather than popping or exploding, the story went, represented the girl’s future husband. (In some versions of this legend, confusingly, the opposite was true: The nut that burned away symbolized a love that would not last.) Another tale had it that if a young woman ate a sugary concoction made out of walnuts, hazelnuts and nutmeg before bed on Halloween night she would dream about her future husband. Young women tossed apple-peels over their shoulders, hoping that the peels would fall on the floor in the shape of their future husbands’ initials; tried to learn about their futures by peering at egg yolks floating in a
bowl of water; and stood in front of mirrors in darkened rooms, holding candles and looking over their shoulders for their husbands’ faces. Other rituals were more competitive. At some Halloween parties, the first guest to find a burr on a chestnut-hunt would be the first to marry; at others, the first successful apple-bobber would be the first down the aisle. Of course, whether we’re asking for romantic advice or trying to avoid seven years of bad luck, each one of these Halloween superstitions relies on the good will of the very same “spirits” whose presence the early Celts felt so keenly.

he Siberian is a glamorous native cat from the taiga of Siberia, a forested area with a subarctic climate that no doubt contributed to the cat’s long, thick, protective coats. They have been known in Russia for around 1000 years. The cats are prized for their hunting ability by householders and shopkeepers. They kept mice and rats well away from stores of grain and other food. They are gaining popularity because it has a reputation for being hypoallergenic – which may or may not be the case. Sitting on your lap while you comb his fur may well be the highlight of his day. When you come home from work, he might not have a martini waiting, but he will be pleased to tell you all about his day in quiet, pleasant trills and chirps, interspersed with a few meows and purrs. Guests will find him to be a genial host; this is not typically a cat that is shy in the presence of strangers. Besides being loving and attentive, the Siberian is also active and playful. He will instigate games of fetch by bringing you a favourite toy to throw. easy way to challenge his agile brain. Because of his heritage as a forest dweller, he likes playing with water—perhaps it’s a genetic memory of going fishing for his supper. Don’t be surprised if he enjoys splashing you in the tub, drinking from a fountain or faucet, or making puddles by batting his paw in his water dish. As befits a working and hunting cat, he’s highly athletic and you may find him balancing atop a doorway or propelling himself to the highest point in the room. Activity and noise won’t bother him a bit. His calm nature gives him the potential to be a therapy cat. If nothing else, he will be happy to snuggle with you when you’re down with a cold or other illness. And although he loves attention, he’s not needy and will wait patiently until you have time to devote to him.
