Editor’s Message A

ugust is without a doubt my favourite month of the year. Yes, it happens to be my birthday month, but it also marks the final stretch of winter. This month sees our weather warming up and it brings the first signs of Spring to the garden which always adds a smile to my face. Last month we ran an article on service in the East, and I want to thank all our readers for sharing their views on this piece. While some readers disagreed with the piece, others voiced agreement. One clear message that we received is that everyone has had their own good and bad experiences and the crochet community is without a doubt a passionate one. Thank you for all your emails with advice and information. I learnt a lot from your emails. As always, please remember to support our advertisers, and tell them where you saw their advert. You can click through to the advertisers Facebook pages or websites directly from the magazine. Without them our magazine will not be possible. Enjoy the month of August and keep an eye on your garden for those early signs of Spring. Until next month, happy reading!

known

As the 8th month of the year has arrived, here are 15 facts about August which you might not have known. 1.

5

The Romans named this month after the first Roman Emperor Augustus (who ruled from 27BC until his death in AD14) in 8BC.

2. Before this, in the early Roman calendar, August was actually known as Sextilis, the sixth month of the year which began with March. It was originally 30 days in length, but an extra day was added so that it would equal the number of days in July, which was named after Julius Caesar. 3. The Anglo-Saxons called August “Weodmonath” meaning “weed month”. 4. The birthstones for August are the peridot and the sardonyx. Peridot is green and among the oldest known gemstones. The lesser-known Sardonyx, is a white and brown-banded gemstone once believed to have mystical powers. 5. The month flowers are the poppy and gladiolus. The name of the verticalgrowing gladiolus comes from the Latin word “gladius” which means “a sword”. 6. August was the 55th most common name given to a baby boy in Sweden in 2014. 7.

But statistics show that only 22 per cent of men named August in Sweden were born during the month.

8. People born in August fall under the sun zodiac signs of Leo and Virgo. Leos are known to be dramatic, creative and outgoing. Virgos have acute attention to detail and are the people most likely to dedicate themselves to serving. They also are loyal, hardworking and analytical. 9.

Some famous people born in August include Martin Sheen, Dustin Hoffman, Whitney Houston, Kylie Jenner, Chris Hemsworth, Alan Shearer, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert de Niro, Robert Redford, David Walliams, Usain Bolt, James Corden, Sean Connery, Macaulay Culkin, Tony Bennett, Barack Obama, Louis Walsh, Geri Halliwell, Barbara Windsor, Richard Gere and Halle Berry.

10. Singer Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977. 11. On Aug. 24th in 79 A.D., the volcano Mount Vesuvius erupted, destroying the city of Pompeii and others. 12. Civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I have a dream” speech was delivered on August 28, 1963. 13. Henry VI Part 1 and The Tempest are the only plays by Shakespeare that mention the month of August. 14. The month of August is often referred to as the “dog days of summer” but not because of pet pooches. It has to do with the star Sirius, also known as the dog star, which rose at the same time as sunrise during the month of August in ancient Roman times. 15.

In 2015, August was the only month beginning on a Saturday.

Wild Pear Dombeya Rotundifolia “He who plants a tree plants a hope.” Lucy Larcom

T

he name Dombeya was given in honour of Joseph Dombey (1742 – 1793), a French botanist who worked in Peru and Chilé. Rotundifolia refers to the round leaves of this species. This gorgeous tree gets its English name from the masses of white blooms which appear before the leaves in early spring. It bears a resemblance to a true pear in full flower. It is no relation to the pear tree. The flowers remain on the tree until after the fruit capsules have formed in the

centre of each flower. The petals turn brown and become dry and light. Once the fruit is ripe and falls from the tree, the petals act as wings and float it away. The wild pear grows in woodlands, wooded grassland and rocky mountain slopes from Kwa-Zulu Natal Northwards to Ethiopia. This is a deciduous, very fast growing tree, 1 – 1.5 meters per year. It may reach up to 10m in height but is usually between 3 and 6 meters. The bark is dark brown, very rough and corky on mature trees. It forms a protective, fire resistant layer around the trunk. The leaves are almost round and are covered with the minute star-

Mary Harris “Mother” Jones was an Irish-born American schoolteacher and dressmaker who became a prominent organized labour representative and community organizer. She helped coordinate major strikes and co-founded the Industrial Workers of the World. Jones worked as a teacher and dressmaker, but after her husband and four children all died of yellow fever in 1867 and her dress shop was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, she began working as an organizer for the Knights of Labour and the United Mine Workers union. From 1897, at about 60 years of age, she was known as Mother Jones. In 1902 she was called “the most dangerous woman in America” for her success in organizing mine workers and their families against the mine owners. In 1903, to protest the lax enforcement of the child labour laws in the Pennsylvania mines and silk mills, she organized a children’s march from Philadelphia to the home of President Theodore Roosevelt in New York. www.featzpublishing.com

9 August 1956, Pretoria

On 9 August 1956 one of the most historic events in the struggle for freedom and women’s rights in South Africa, took place in Pretoria. It was on this day that more than 50 000 women of different races staged a march on the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the proposed amendments to the Urban Areas Act (commonly known as the pass laws) of 1950.

Today, we also use the public holiday to celebrate the remarkable achievements and the tenacious spirits of the fearless females who continue to advocate for change, defy norms and stand up for what they believe in.

“…We are women from every part of South Africa. We are women of every race, we come from the cities and the towns, from the reserves and the villages. They left bundles of petitions containing We come as women united in our purpose more than 100 000 signatures at prime minister J.G. Strijdom’s office doors. Outside to save the African women from the they stood silently for 30 minutes, many with degradation of passes… In the name of women of South Africa, their children on their backs. Fiscal Shrike The Common Fiscal Shrike is boldly marked with pitch black above and crisp white below. The white bar in the wings extends all the way up to the “shoulder” and when perched, forms a distinctive “V” pattern on the back. The robust bill is tipped with a hook and discloses its predatory habits. The Fiscal makes itself conspicuous by perching on an exposed branch or fence post from where it drops down onto its prey. Its diet consists of large insects, lizards and the fledglings of other species. It often impales its prey on a thorn or spike, giving it the nickname of Butcher Bird (Afrikaans: Laksman)

www.featzpublishing.com

11

Although the Fiscal prefers wide open habitats, many have adapted to suburban gardens. They are fiercely territorial and scare away any other birds that venture into their space. This habit makes them unpopular with people that go to extensive efforts to create a bird-friendly garden with feeders and birdbaths. The Fiscal makes itself very conspicuous by calling frequently from its exposed perch. The call is a mixture of sweet and harsh notes. However, it is a mimic and regularly confuses the observer with passages that contain snippets mimicking local birds.

The Fiscal builds a dumpy cup-shaped nest in a dense bush or tree. The female can be distinguished from the male by bold russet markings on her flanks. Usually three cream-coloured eggs are laid and are incubated for 16 days. Thereafter the fledgling period is about 19 days, by which time there are very few insects left in their territory. The Fiscal can be distinguished from the similar looking Fiscal Flycatcher that has a thinner bill, shorter tail and the white markings on the folded wings are restricted to the lower half. The next time you are outside, take a moment to establish whether the black and white bird in your garden is the Common Fiscal or the daintier Fiscal Flycatcher.

Saint Bernard

www.featzpublishing.com

A late night cold sufferer fills the TV screen. His night-time affliction causes him to toss and turn, each cough painful and every sneeze wracking his body. Then a deep-throated bark draws this invalid to his door, where he finds a massive dog with a flask attached to this collar. By the end of the commercial, the Saint Bernard has done his job and the cold sufferer is fast asleep. The Saint Bernard did, in fact, rescue people from the cold – not the virus, of course, but the chill winds and snows of the Alpes, so treacherous to travellers. Not surprisingly, he’s a kind, gentle, intelligent, good-natured dog. He’s also a giant, a large, muscular dog who can reach a height of 76cm and a weight of 82kg. The Saint comes in shorthaired and longhaired varieties, the shorthaired being the one preferred by the monks of the Saint Bernard Hospice where the dogs originated. Despite his size, the Saint Bernard is a quiet indoor dog who makes a wonderful family friend. Although he’s calm indoors, it’s nice if he has access to a yard where he can have a little room to spread out. He can live in small quarters, however, as long as he gets a good daily walk. More importantly than the size of your home is your tolerance for mess. Saints aren’t the best choice for a fastidious housekeeper. They drool and shed and they track in mud and dirt. With this breed, saintliness is not necessarily next to cleanliness. Saints are not suited to living outdoors with little human companionship. They need to live in the house with their family. They’re not aggressive, but they’ll bark when there is cause and any threat to their people will bring out their protective instincts. Their size is usually a deterrent to any would-be attacker or

15

burglar.

The easy-going Saint Bernard is gentle and patient with children if not necessarily playful. He’s great to snuggle with while reading or watching television, but he can be a bit much for younger children accidently knocking them over with a swipe of his tail.

The Saint Bernard does not need a lot of exercise. He’s not a jogging companion and will wilt in hot climates. Saints suffer from heat exhaustion quite easily and need access to shade and plenty of fresh cool water during hot weather. On the other hand, you’ll never find a happier Saint Bernard than one who’s enjoying a good romp in the snow. On a sadder note, the Saint’s size condemns him to a shorter than average canine life span. He also suffers from a variety of genetic diseases and disorders. The Saint Bernard is a much-loved breed today. He’s versatile, good-natured and a fine choice for the person or family who would like a large but gentle dog with moderate exercise needs.

Clown Day: Saturday 5th of August

Days of Interest in August Chocolate Chip Cookie Day is on the 4 of th

Clown Day was created to give recognition to those funny clowns that make us laugh and smile. It is estimated that there are over 10,000 clowns in organized clown groups, and over 20,000 clowns worldwide. They all have one goal in mind, and that’s to make us happy.

August. Put on your apron and fire up the oven, for this is a day to bake dozens and dozens of chocolate chip cookies. And, then eat them, of course!

On this day, clowns around the world do what they do best.... they clown around, holding events at malls, nursing homes, schools, and educational events.

It’s real easy to celebrate this sweet day. Eat lots and lots of Chocolate chip cookies. Store bought or homemade chocolate chip cookies are all okay. If you are a baker, celebrate this day, by pulling out your favourite chocolate chip cookie recipes (yes, I said “recipes”), and bake as many cookies as you can. If this day falls on a workday, it is perfectly fine to bake the cookies the night before, as long as you bring some in to work for your fellow workers.

We hope a clown or two brightens up your day, today! It is uncertain how and when Clown Day, came into being.

Friendship Day

Did You Know? Americans eat on average 18,928 cookies (all kinds) in their lifetimes. The chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield from Massachusetts, in 1938. Her husband ran the Toll House Inn, resulting in her cookies being call “Toll House” cookies. Nestle’s bought the rights to the name, and the rest is history!

Celebrated on the first Sunday of August

Our research easily found Ruth Graves Wakefield, the creator of the Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. But, we did not find the creator of this special day....yet.

One thing is for certain...... if you put your all into the spirit of Friendship Day, you will have a great, great day. Happy Friendship Day to people all over the world!

Lighthouse Day

Celebrated on August 9 th Book Lovers Day encourages you to find a place in the shade to relax with a good book. Book reading is a great hobby. It’s an important one, too. Employers look for it on resumes. Reading is educational, informative, and relaxing. It makes us both smarter and happier people.

Celebrated on August 7 th Lighthouse Day honours and commemorates a beacon of light that symbolizes safety and security for boats at sea. Over the years, lighthouses have saved many ships, and an untold number of lives. Throughout maritime history, Lighthouses have shined their powerful, sweeping lights through the fog and storms, allowing ships of all kinds to find their way back to port during inclement weather. With the advent of radar and GPS technology, lighthouses have taken a back seat in guiding ships to port. However, they remain

Book Lovers Day is a great day to celebrate. Just grab an interesting book, find a quiet, cozy place, and crack open the cover. If you fall asleep while reading, that’s okay. It’s all part of the relaxing benefits of being a book lover. Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day. There is some disagreement over when this day is celebrated. The vast majority of sites list it on August 9th. A smaller number of sites have it recorded on the first Saturday in November. If you are a true book lover, you will enjoy celebrating it on both days.

relaxation. There never seems to be a day to just kick back and relax. For those of us with a hectic lifestyle, Relaxation Day is a day to look forward to. It provides a break from the madness of your busy work and personal schedule. Today is the day to enjoy either doing absolutely nothing, or partaking in your favourite relaxation activity.

Celebrated on August 10 th Lazy Day is your chance to goof off, and definitely not work. If your chores are not done, they can just wait one more day. It is best spent on a hammock, along with your favorite beverage. Whoever said “There’s no lazy days...just lazy people.” Well, we respectfully disagree. It is indeed a Lazy Day. And, we consider that a good thing. We could not find the creator, or the origin of this day. The creators probably had good intention to document this special day. But, they probably found themselves caught up in the true spirit and meaning of this day.

Relaxation Day

Avoiding stressful activities today is the rule. For example, if golf is your favourite hobby, yet it can cause you stress, then make plans to play golf another day. Spending the day in a hammock with a book is a far more appropriate activity. Top Ten ideas to enjoy on Relaxation Day: •

“Beep, beep, beep beep”, sounds the alarm keypad as we prepare to leave home. “Skwaak, Skwaak”, chirps Victoria’s bright yellow Ringneck parrot, “Skwaak, Skwaak”. “By-bye, Bud Bud”, we all reply in unison, smiling ridiculously at each other at the daily ritual. Bud Bud is not clever. He is programmed. When he hears the alarm beeping and the sound of our keys, he skwarks his reply automatically. In fact, he cannot help it. It struck me recently that we are the same. Have you noticed how you routinely answer certain questions in exactly the same way? How you tell the story of your mishap using the same words? You probably react to stupid drivers the way your parents did. You are almost certain to have the same religious and political ideals as them. Despite us intellectually understanding the adage that a definition of insanity is doing the same thing, the same way and expecting a different outcome, we generally do the same thing in the same way and marvel at our lack of significant progress.

A privileged few of us recently learnt from T. Harv Eker that we have a financial blueprint. A financial programming that regulates our income. Seriously, it’s like the air-conditioner set at 22 degrees. When the room warms up, it cools it down. When the room cools down, it warms it up. Most humans will operate in more-orless the same financial milieu as their parents. In my opinion, it is probably

as difficult to move up a caste in India as it is to move significantly up the social/ financial ladder. Here is the insight of insights from T. Harv’s seminar: You can never earn more than your self-image. In other words, you can never earn more than you believe you deserve. If this be true (and I believe it is) then where else are we programmed? EVERYWHERE. In every single area of our lives. Peter Sage highlighted this again for me yesterday when he spoke about our self-image. How we see ourselves. The truth is, we can never be more or less than what we believe ourselves to be. And Blair Singer expounder on this when he taught us about, “The little voice” that guides us.

We If we want to please our Daddy (and don’t we cannot enter into His rest or receive His all?) we have to trust Him; we have to believe peace (shalom) before we come to a place Him, not just believe in Him. Heb 11:6 Now of faith. That’s how Jesus managed to walk without faith it is impossible to please him. the road that was laid out before Him. even told us that faith comparable to a mustard seed is enough to move a mountain. The Old Covenant on the other hand was works based. That is why obedience was so important. Paul actually refers to the Law and faith: Gal 3:12 But the law is not based on faith, but the one who does the works of the law will live by them. (NET) It was purely works based. You had to produce before God would respond. But now we are under grace and therefore works and deserving and obedience have lost its position at the top of God’s priority list. faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (KJV) Many translations substitute this phrase with ‘faithfulness of Christ’ or ‘faith in Christ’. But John Sheasby explains in one of his sermons that the King James is actually true to the Greek. The phrase ‘by the faith of Christ’ is repeated three times above. Now meditate on this – it is very liberating to know that even our faith has been taken care of by Jesus Himself. The new covenant is really good, and it has to be to be called ‘the good news’.

We received He considers thoughts of faith so much higher than works but we are stuck on works faith and Jesus lives His life in us by His own and think that that is what pleases Him. What faith. He did it so that we can be free from striving for more faith. We can now have He wants is for us to move beyond works peace and rest like Jesus promised because based religion into a trust based relationship with Him. 24 Hours of Le Mans

T

he Le Mans 24-hour race is the oldest active sports car endurance race. It has been held annually since 1923 in the French town of Le Mans. It is considered to be the most prestigious automobile race in the world and is called the ultimate Grand Prix of endurance and efficiency. This event represents one leg of The Triple Crown Of Motorsport – the other two events being the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix. The Le Mans racing circuit is called the Circuit De La Sarthe, which is a combination of closed public roads, and specialized racing circuit. Since 1923, the circuit has been extensively modified, mostly for safety reasons, and is now 13,629km long. The 6km main straight had to be modified with two chicanes to slow the cars down as they were reaching in excess of 400km/h! The top speeds are now about 330km/h. The race is held in June and begins in the mid afternoon and finishes the following day at the same time. Over the 24-hour period, the cars cover a distance of over 5000 km; the record was set in 2010 with a distance of 5410 km. www.featzpublishing.com

The main aim of the race is a test of reliability rather than speed from the car

manufacturers. Each team has to use at least three drivers per car with no driver being allowed to drive more than 240 minutes over a six-hour period.

35

The most successful constructor thus far has been Porsche with no less than nineteen overall victories including seven in a row! Audi is next with thirteen wins followed by Ferrari with nine. The driver with the most wins is Tom Kristensen with nine wins, including six in a row. He is followed by Racing Legend Jacky Ickx with six wins. In 1984 South African driver Sarel van der Merwe competed in Le Mans and obtained a very respectable third position in his debut race! In 1955 there was a major crash sending debris flying into the crowds – 84 people including French driver Pierre Levegh were killed and 180 people were injured in the most catastrophic accident in motor-sport history! This led Mercedes Benz to retire from motor-sport until 1989. A total of twenty-two drivers have lost their lives during this prestigious race. This race really is the ultimate test of man and machine and the research done on these cars benefits each and every one of us in the cars we drive today.

Foods for Healthy Skin

E

veryone should know that what you eat affects your skin and your complexion, and that eating the wrong types of food can bring on breakouts. We know that we need to cut out the greasy and the junk food, but what are the good foods that will have positive effect on your skin? Here are ten foods that have the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that will help keep your skin looking fresh, clear and beautiful. 1.

Oatmeal Oatmeal is a great all-round food that has many health benefits and one of those benefits is the way that oatmeal can even out the peaks and troughs in your blood sugar levels. It has been found in studies that spikes in the blood sugar levels can cause a release of hormones that will cause breakouts and redness on the skin.

2.

Coconut Oil Coconut oil is another one of the amazing foods for healthy skin. Consuming a tablespoon of coconut oil every day can help keep your skin clear and healthy. Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which has powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties that will help to fight infection in the skin, including acne.

3.

Dark Chocolate Another one of the foods for healthy skin is dark chocolate; it is filled with antioxidants and flavourants that will give your skin a smooth, glowing look. Cocoa is also known to help increase blood circulation in the arteries, which will improve overall health of your skin.

4.

Green tea Soothing and calming, green tea also deserves a place on our list of foods for healthy skin. Drinking green tea will provide you with more of those vital antioxidants that ward off the signs of aging and fight free radicals that cause damage to skin cells. Green tea will also reduce stress, which can be another cause for dull skin and acne.

5.

Red bell peppers A red bell pepper is a great snack that can do wonders for your skin. Just one bell pepper contains all the vitamin C that you need in a day, as well as carotenoids that your body needs to help increase blood circulation and reduce wrinkles.

6.

Seeds You can take your pick with seeds, there are so many different varieties to choose from, but add seeds to your diet and you’d be doing your skin a big favour. Seeds contain many minerals that will help improve the complexion and many seeds are also a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which help fight acne and wrinkles.

7.

Red grapes

Red grapes also deserve a place on the list. Red grapes provide a good source of antioxidants and they also act as a natural antihistamine, which will fight skin allergies.

8.

Celery Celery is often thought to be not a lot more than water, but it too has some amazing benefits for your skin. You need to keep your skin hydrated, so the water in celery will help you with that. Celery also contains vitamin K that will help to keep the circulation in good working order too.

9.

Papaya Eating papaya will help protect your skin against the sun and it contains a good supply of nutrients for your skin too. Papaya contains beta-carotene and vitamin C and E, all of which can help reduce inflammation in the skin and add a beautiful glow.

10. Carrots Carrots are a great crunchy snack for any time of the day and they are really good for clearing breakouts. Carrots are a rich source for vitamin A, which helps to regulate the production of skin cells in the outer layer of the skin. If your body produces too many skin cells, then the dead cells can combine with the oil in your skin and clog the pores.

SAFETY PLANNING WITHIN AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP (PART 1)

D

omestic violence is serious, destructive and can happen to anyone! Being in a violent relationship necessitates safety planning for dangerous situations, regardless of the decision whether or not to remain in the relationship. A personal safety plan is a way of helping you to protect yourself and your children. It helps you plan in advance for the possibility of future violence and abuse. It also helps you to think about how you can increase your safety - either within the relationship, or if you decide to leave. You cannot stop your partner’s violence and abuse - only they can do that. BUT there are things you can do to increase your own and your children’s safety.

It begins with determining a course of action if another serious incident occurs in the home. Here’s a few safety tips: • Avoid confrontations in rooms where there is only one exit. (If you suspect that your partner is about to attack you, try to go to a lower risk area of the house - for example where there www.featzpublishing.com

is a way out and access to a phone). • Avoid rooms that contain many potential weapons. (Avoid the kitchen or garage where there are likely to be knives or other weapons; and avoid rooms where you might be trapped such as the bathroom - or where you might be shut into a cupboard or other small space.  Always carry a list of emergency

numbers. (Keep with you any important numbers such as the local police station, your social worker, your child’s school etc.)  Make sure that family members and friends are in possession of a copy of the protection order and warrant of arrest of the abuser.  Keep money in a safe place for public transport (Remember public busses work on a card system – no cash! Get that card, put some money on it – just for in case…);  Keep an extra set of keys for the house and/or car;  Have all essential documents such as ID documents, medical card, savings and credit cards.

in a safe place (e.g. at the neighbours). (Keep copies of the essential documents and extra keys in the bag. Also: prescribed medication, your address book, family photographs, your diary, jewellery, small items of sentimental value, clothing and toiletries for you and your children).

43

 Teach your children not to get into the middle of a fight even if they want to help. (A fist meant for the spouse can hit the child or the child can be pushed away and fall. • Devise a code word to use with your children, family, and friends when you need the police.

 Document signs of physical abuse. Take photographs of injuries or bruises.  Have a bag of clothes for yourself and your children and keep it

 It is advisable to inform your manager about the circumstances at home. (Knowledge brings power. Your colleagues can protect you and themselves by e.g. the usage of “safety words” and sharping up the security. Uninformed absenteeism could also be followed up immediately).  If you are planning to leave, leave when the partner is not around and take the children with you! (The abuser can manipulate you to come back by threatening to hurt the children).

BE SAFE!

Fascinating People

www.featzpublishing.com

Myra Cohn Livingston, poet, musician, critic, educator, anthologist and author, respected the true craft of writing poetry. She experimented with form, never compromising, and was noted for using a variety of techniques to express the realities and wonders of a child’s everyday world and experiences. By passing along her standards and sharing her expertise during over twenty years of teaching at the University of California at Los Angeles, she also brought numerous new talents into the field of children’s literature. Born Myra Cohn on August 17, 1926 in Omaha, Nebraska, the older daughter of Mayer Louis (Bud) Cohn and Gertrude (Marks) Cohn, she moved with her family, which included younger sister Hannah, to Southern California when she was eleven. As a child, she studied French horn, which she began playing professionally in 1940. However, she began writing poetry while a freshman at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and her first published poem, submitted at the urging of a professor, appeared in a magazine in 1946. Returning to Southern California, she wrote book reviews for Los Angeles papers and in 1950 accepted a position as personal secretary for entertainer Dinah Shore. She later filled a similar role for violinist Jascha Heifetz, whose biography she was writing at the time of her death. Myra Cohn married Richard Roland Livingston in 1952 and for twelve years the couple lived in Dallas, Texas where their three children, Joshua, Jonas and Jennie were born. In 1958, Livingston resubmitted a complete collection, Whispers and Other Poems, to Margaret K. McElderry at Harcourt, who had previously encouraged her to keep writing, and her first book was published. The relationship between Livingston and McElderry continued and resulted in over twenty-five additional volumes, including B is for Baby: An Alphabet of Verses (1996) inspired by her first grandchild. In 1958 Livingston also began to serve as an instructor in the Dallas Public Library and Public School systems.

and other organizations. A prolific poet, her numerous collections on special topics varied, for she said, “It is the force of what I say that shapes the form.” As an example, Sky Songs (1984) contains fourteen pieces about varied aspects of the sky, each in a fifteen-line, three-stanza cinquain form, while Festivals (1996), centering on celebrations around the world, contains a wide variety of verse forms, cinquain, free verse, haiku, and even a playlet.

Besides the many volumes of her own work, Livingston was an outstanding anthologist, producing many unusual collections, some containing the voices of many nations. In her first such collection, A Tune Beyond Us (1968), she chose to have many of the translated poems printed also in their original languages so that those with the ability to do so could enjoy their intended rhythm and music. Poem-Making: Ways to Begin Writing Poetry (1991) is a gift Livingston devised for young writers, but which can be recommended to anyone who yearns to try this form of creation. A handbook of the mechanics of poetry, Livingston saw it as a synthesis of her thirty years of experience in teaching and conducting poetry workshops throughout the country and said it took about four years from inception of the idea to completion. “I was spurred on [to write this book] because of the constant contact with children,” she said. “I wrote two earlier books on the subject of children writing poetry, When You Are Alone/It Keeps You Capone: An Approach to Creative Writing for Children (1973) and The Child as Poet: Myth or Reality (1985), which are for adults...To my knowledge, Poem-Making is the first book for children on the subject of poetry that is written by someone who is both a children’s poet and teacher.”

Livingston won many awards, among them the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota and a 1980 award from the National Council of Teachers In 1964 the Livingston family moved to Los Angeles of English for Excellence in Poetry for Children.
