Editor’s Message Six months of 2017 is behind us. The first half of this year has been full of sad news, political mayhem in our country and disasters in the Cape that have left many people destitute and in dire need of assistance. It is easy to allow these events to bring us down and leave us without hope. Too often the bigger picture seems too much to deal with. As we enter the last half of winter, we should strive to remain optimistic, looking forward to the rebirth in nature that spring promises. July is a relatively quiet month in the social calendar, allowing us the much needed break to catch a breath and prepare ourselves for a busy, fun filed year end which really is just around the corner. On a personal note, happy birthday to my mom. May your birth month be filled with peace, love and joy. Have a great birthday, and thank you for all you have taught me. You are a special soul. To our readers, I look forward to hearing what you think of our July issue, and as always remember to support our advertisers. You can visit their websites directly from the magazine by clicking on their adverts – just another way we are trying to make your lives a little easier. Have an Awesome July, keep warm and hold onto the fact that we are on a downward spiral towards the end of winter. Until next month, Happy Reading!

Waste-To-Energy

July Facts 1) The month of July was named after Julius Caesar by a decision of the Roman Senate in 44BC as July was the month of his birth. Before that, it was known as Quintilis (fifth) as it was the fifth month in the old calendar. 2) Until the 18th Century, the word July in English had the stress on the first syllable and rhymed with duly or truly. 3) Although six months have passed, July 1st is not the mid-point of the year. The exact halfway point comes at 12h00 (GMT) on July 3rd in a non-leap year. 4) No month ends on the same day of the week as July unless it is a leap year when January does. 5) July’s birthstone is a ruby, which is said to symbolise contentment. 6) Seven US presidents have died in July, which is more than any other month

The Cheesewood Tree “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” – Warren Buffet

Pittosporum viridiflorum / Kasuur (Afrikaans) The Cheesewood tree is said to ease pain and have a calming effect. If that’s not enough reason for you to add one to your garden, how about the sweet scent the flowers will add to your garden, or the showy display you will receive when the capsules split open to release the seeds? Okay, and if we told you this tree will attract birds to your garden? Another big advantage of this tree is that it does not have an aggressive root system, making it safe to plant next to paved areas or retaining walls.

4

This evergreen, indigenous tree grows to various sizes, from a shrub to about 4 meters high. In large forests, they can grow up to 30 meters. The bark is a pale brown to grey with distinctive white dots (lenticels). The leaves are usually wider above the middle and a glossy, dark-green colour. The small flowers are greenish-white and sweetly fragrant, appearing on the tree in early summer – November to December. The flowers are followed by small yellowbrown seed capsules. You can expect a showy display when the capsules split open to release small, shiny, orange-red seeds. The seeds are covered in sticky,

abdominal pain, stomach complaints and fever. It’s said to ease pain and have a calming effect. Sometimes, dried, powdered root is added to beer as an aphrodisiac. The Cheesewood has soft, white wood, which may account for its common name that is seldom used. If you are not convinced to plant Cheesewood in your garden yet, here are a few points that might help: - The Cheesewood is a good garden plant that grows in full sun or semishade. - It is a well-shaped tree, or it can be pruned to a hedge. - It makes a useful screening plant – keeping those nosy neighbours at bay. resinous exudate. The Cheesewood, often confused with the white milkwood (Sideroxlon inerme) is widely distributed in the Eastern half of Southern Africa, occurring from the Western Cape up into tropical Africa and beyond to Arabia and India. They grow over a wide range of altitudes and vary in form from one location to the next. The Cheesewood will grow in tall forests and in scrub on the forest margin, kloofs and on stream banks. Many birds eat the seeds, including the Red-eyed dove and several starlings. Goats and game (Kudu, Nyala and Bushbuck) browse the leaves. The stem bark, which has a bitter taste and a strong resinous or liquorice smell, is used medicinally. Decoction or infusions are widely used to treat

- You can grow a Cheesewood in a big container as a patio plant. - They are hardy, neat and undemanding. - They do not have an aggressive root system, making them ideal for small gardens. - The fragrant flowers will scent your garden. - They add beautiful colour when in fruit and they attract birds.

The name is derived from: “Pitta” = pitch / “sporum” = seed refering to the sticky seeds Viridiflorum = with green flowers

Teddies for Charity To raise money to buy more wool and other supplies needed for the project, Jumanthea has knitted and sold an additional 7 teddies.

A

new resident to the Montana Retirement Village, Jumanthea, found her calling when she joined the in house craft group “Vleitige Vingers”. These ladies work tirelessly to do their bit for various charities. Jumanthea embraced the challenge and enthusiastically threw herself into their teddy bear knitting project, producing teddies that come complete with ribbons, hats, bags and clothing ensuring no two teddies are the same. This lady has really gone above and beyond to do her bit to help.

Just when you think you are impressed with her efforts, she decides to go one step further. Jumanthea has now made it her personal goal to collect as many donated items as possible for the Boere Gemeenskap of Transvaal. I do not want to give away any secrets, but she is hard at work on yet another collection of teddy bears to help these children in need enjoy a little cuddle this festive season.

Jumanthea, you are an inspiration. Well done on all the hard work, those in need will definitely feel the warmth of your kind heart. To everyone who donated wool, stuffing, ribbons and other bits and pieces On the 12th of May, 25 teddies were handed along the way, Jumanthea thanks you for to the Sinoville SAPD’s Child protection your support in helping her bring a smile division, 17 of which were made by to children who need it. The Laughing Dove

“The more often we see the things around us - even the beautiful and wonderful things - the more they become invisible to us. That is why we often take for granted the beauty of this world: the flowers, the trees, the birds, the clouds - even those we love. Because we see things so often, we see them less and less. Joseph B. Wirthlin Stigmatopelia senegakensis Bird articles typically tend to feature species with extravagant colouring or shy birds that are seldom seen. This month, after reading the quote above by Joseph B. Wirthlin, I decided to cover a species that is guaranteed to be there every time you walk outside. The laughing dove is so common, they simply disappear into the landscape and chances are you no longer even notice them baking in the sun.

8

The laughing dove is a small, humble looking bird with a wingspan of roughly 40 centimetres. They reach a length of 25 centimetres and generally weigh approximately 100 grams, which is less than a large packet of chips. Mauve pink feathers cover the head, neck and breast, shading to white on the belly while the back has a slightly more red-brown colouring and slate blue wings. The bill is black and the legs and feet are pinkish. A distinctive collar of black feathers with golden tips circles the throat.

The female, with slightly paler plumage, is similar in appearance to the male, while juvenile birds tend to be duller with a browner colouring to their plumage. Also known as; the Indian Little Brown Dove, the Laughing Turtle-dove, the Palm Dove and the Senegal Dove, these birds have a large range from Southern Africa to Asia, as far East as India. They have also been introduced to Australia. The laughing dove is primarily an inhabitant of woodland and savannah but they are also found around human habitation, farmland, villages and towns. They typically nest in fruit trees, particularly pomegranate and olive trees in Africa. They feed on seeds and other vegetable matter, like fruit (I recently watched one nibbling on a piece of apple on my bird feeding table) but will also eat small insects, like termites. Most often they will feed on fallen seeds and fruit on the ground, but occasionally they will pluck and feed while perched. The male has a spectacular flight display which he performs to advertise himself to females. With noisy wing beats to attract the attention of all nearby females, he will leave his perch, flying to a considerable height before sailing downwards again with his wings and tail spread wide, showing off his grace and beauty. While courting, the male will bob his head up and down, showing off his colourful collar while cooing gently. Laughing doves are monogamous and will return to the same nesting site year after year. Nesting occurs any time during the year but peaks during the rainy season. Normally the nest is situated alone in a fruit tree, but

occasionally a few breeding pairs will nest close together. The male collects the material while the female builds the nest using between 100 and 140 twigs…. The poor male has a lot of collecting to do. The final nest might appear to be rather flimsy but once completed it can last up to nine months. Two eggs are laid which the male and female take turns to incubate for a period of up to two weeks. Eggs are laid on average six times a year, which means a breeding pair will have between 10 and 16 eggs per breeding season. That’s a lot of mouths to feed every year. While laughing doves typically appear individually or in a pair they may gather in flocks at watering points, roosting sites or where there is an abundance of food. The hooting and moaning you hear when they gather waiting for you to supply their daily meal are most likely them bickering because you are running late. The population is believed to be stable, with no substantial threats to the species so you can expect to hear their pleasant “ha ha hoo hoo hoo” call in your garden regularly for quite some time yet.

CHESS DAY I’m sure you’ve heard of chess, but did you know there’s a whole day dedicated to it? Now you do! A game of strategy and wits, Chess is the thinking man’s game. From Early India to today, Chess is a wonderful game to play anytime, anywhere. The History of International Chess Day Invented in India in the fifth century, it was named “Chaturanga” and this is likely one of the oldest games of our era. the game then spread to Persia. When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently spread to Southern Europe. In Europe, chess evolved into roughly its current form in the 15th century. The game was developed extensively in Europe. By the late 15th century, it had survived a series of prohibitions and Christian Church sanctions to almost take the shape of the modern game. Modern history saw reliable reference works, competitive chess tournaments, and exciting new variations. These factors added to the game’s popularity, further liked by reliable timing mechanisms (first introduced in 1861), effective rules, and charismatic players. Chess remains a highly popular pastime among the general populace. A 2012 survey found that “chess players now make up one of the largest communities in the world: 605 million adults play chess regularly” On July 20, 1924 at the eighth summer Olympic games in Paris, France, the FIDE (World Chess Federation) was Founded. Thus in 1966, on the same day as the founding of the FIDE, International Chess Day begun. Today there are chess tournaments all over the world. The first modern chess tournament having been held in London in 1851 and won by German Adolf Anderssen How To Celebrate International Chess Day Most cities have one or more chess clubs, we see them in high schools and even high winning competitions. Take a look around your city and locate your local chess group. Go play a game and maybe pick up some new chess moves. Maybe you can go find a chess mate to try your hand at it, and if you’ve never played, try going out and learning how to play and know how to play a new game! You could always call friends and family over for a picnic and organising a human chess game at the park! You can use colored tee shirts with game piece names on them to identify who is playing what piece. You can make chess piece shaped cookies for the chess lover in your life, go watch people play, get caught up in the wonders of the sport!

Wrinkly Shar-Pei Facts developed by royalty as guard dogs, others insist that peasants first bred them to hunt, herd, protect stock and guard homes. Their most likely purpose was probably for pit fighting. COMMUNISM VERY NEARLY ENDED THE BREED As the Shar-Pei was edged out of the fighting pits by other breeds, breeding slowed and the population figures dwindled. The when China became a communist country, the government decided owning a pet was a luxury item – on which they instilled a hefty tax. Later, dog breeding was banned completely. By 1947, the tax for owning a dog skyrocketed, leaving only the super-rich able to afford to keep a dog. These events led to the Shar-Pei being nearly wiped out.

T

he Shar-Pei is an interesting looking dog. This melty-looking pup sure is one of a kind, and he comes with a history to match. THE SHAR-PEI WAS BRED IN CHINA The breed’s true origin is shrouded in mystery. Many people believe that this is an ancient breed, saying figurines that resemble the pooch were part of the Han Dynasty, dating back to 200BCE. Others, however, feel that the figurines in question could just as easily be a pug or a chow chow.

14

Even the Shar-Pei’s original purpose will leave you scratching your head. They are believed to have been

From the late 60’s to mid-70’s Guinness World Records listed the Shar-Pei as the rarest dog in the world. THE BREED WAS SAVED BY ONE MAN The owner of Down-Kennels in Hong Kong, Matgo Law, bred with and raised Shar-Pei. At the time Hong Kong was a British colony. Law, fearing that Hong Kong would rejoin China, sent out a plea to the world to save the breed. During 1979, Life Magazine ran an article about the wrinkly dogs and even featured one on the cover. Suddenly everyone wanted a wrinkled little pup. Today the Shar-Pei is the 57th most popular breed in America.

THEY HAVE UNIQUE TONGUES

THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT KINDS

The Shar-Pei has a tongue that is either lavender or blue-black. The only other breed that has a black tongue is the chow chow. According to Chinese folklore, the fearsome black tongue will ward off evil spirits.

There are two very distinctive types of SharPei, both with equally fearsome (or silly, depending on your perspective) names: “bone mouths” or “meat mouths”. The names refer to the shape and muscles of the muzzle. Bone mouths generally have a snout with less padding, while a meat mouth will have a heftier muzzle. The latter is the most popular.

THE CUTE WRINKLES ACTUALLY SERVE A DARK PURPOSE As the dogs were probably used for fighting and to guard houses they needed to be tough. While they are not as strong as other breeds, the Shar-Pei has a strategic edge – wrinkled skin. When an attacker bit the Shar-Pei, he would be left with a mouth full of skin, as the theory goes, this would ensure no vital organs were damaged. The loose skin also gives the dog under attack room to swing around and bite back. As a final touch, the Shar-Pei has curved teeth that are capable of hooking into his enemy’s skin and they come with a lot of stamina, ensure they can keep up in the pit.

THEIR SHORT SNOUTS CAN LEAD TO TROUBLE They have a slightly pushed in snout, and while this makes them rather cute, it can lead to health problems. Their breathing can be a little difficult which means they have some trouble with running long distances. They snore and can get over-heated easily. THE PLURAL OF SHAR-PEI IS JUST SHAR-PEI The name of the dog is always just Shar-Pei – no matter how many you are referring to.

THE NAME REFERS TO THEIR FUR When the breed was being perfected, the rough fur was added as a means of protection. The bristly fur would create an unpleasant sensation in the enemy’s mouth, hopefully weakening the grip. Shar-Pei means sand skin, it refers to the coat which looks and feels like sandpaper.

THEY COME IN A VARIETY OF COLOURS There are 21 different shades of Shar-Pei, including some interesting colours like five point red, blue sable and red fawn.

Vital Stats: Height at shoulder – 48 to 55cm Weight – 18 to 25kg Life Span – 8 to 12 years

Meatloaf

This month’s recipe is movie inspired. Ever so often, while watching TV you hear a reference to meatloaf – no not the musician – the meal. Service in the East Shocking

L

istening to my Mother-in-law talk about a table cloth that was crocheted for her by her mother, she was filled with fond memories as she showed me the precious cloth. I was inspired to crochet a granny square blanket for each of my daughters. After all, every girl should have something special made especially for her by mom. Not an everyday crochet enthusiast, I set out to shop for the wool I would need for my project. The task proved to be a lot more daunting that I would have thought possible. Visiting every wool shop in the East I could find, I very nearly gave up on my planned project before I even started. Generally finding wool was not a challenge, there are shops in Moreletta Park as well as Garsfontein that offer a wide range to choose from. The pricing at first glance did not appear too bad - but what did I know. Unfortunately, both these stores offered very little in the line of service. I found the staff to be aloof at best, avoiding conversation and in some cases even eye contact Visiting the Elna Store in the Faerie Glen, Pick n Pay Centre turned out to be a refreshing change. While they did not have the same selection of wool offered by the other store I

visited, the ladies here were extremely helpful and friendly. They assisted me with advice, suggestions and even emailed me a selection of different Granny Square patterns. The bug bit me and I am constantly working on a new Granny Square projects, constantly buying more wool and looking for the best possible prices. Luckily, I discovered Wool Knitters Paradise (Frederika Street, corner 12 Avenue, Gezina). Their prices are perfect for my hobby and they offer a very impressive selection. Not to mention that the staff are always happy to see you, even if it’s your first visit. Sure driving to Gezina is time consuming and a bit of a mission, but the reduced pricing, selection and level of service deffinately warrants a monthly visit. Had local stores offered me a slightly better level of service, I would most likely not have gone searching for an alternative, and would not have realised just how overpriced wool in Pretoria East really is. If you would like to pay less for your wool and receive a level of service clients deserve, I suggest you take a drive to Wool Knitters Paradise in Gezina. Follow this link to their Facebook page.

Love Does Not Leave Marks

T

he definition of love is as big as the concept itself. For some, love is a deep affection, for others a physical attraction and for some a closeness that only they share. Irrespective of what a person’s view of love is, love is something that makes you feel good. Good about yourself and good about others. When we enter into a romantic relationship with someone, none of us expects to be treated badly. We are attracted to the positive qualities in a potential partner, we feel passionately towards them and we fall in love often ignoring or failing to see any negative characteristics.

20

Each of us longs for a special closeness to that “one other

person”, BUT is the close connection that you wanted still possible if your partner abuses you? If he or she verbally, emotionally, or physically hurts you, can you still hope to have a good relationship? Is it worth to justify or defend alarming actions in the name of love? The definition of love might be debatable, BUT what is not debateable is what love is not. LOVE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO HURT, NOT SUPPOSED TO LEAVE MARKS…NOT ON THE SOLE AND NOT ON THE BODY! • Love is not being excessively jealous. Abusers often say that jealousy is a sign of love, but in reality, it’s a sign of possessiveness and a lack of trust. In a healthy

relationship, the partners trust each other. • Love is not displaying controlling behaviour. Often at the beginning of a relationship, an abuser will say that the controlling behaviour is because they are concerned for your safety. Abusers will be angry if you are late coming back from somewhere; you might be questioned closely about where you went, what you did and whom you spoke to. As this behaviour gets worse, the abuser may not allow you to make personal decisions about the house, finances, your clothing, or going to work. • Love does not have unrealistic expectations or demands. Abusive people often expect their partner to meet ALL of their needs. The person must be the perfect partner, lover and friend. They may expect you to take care of everything for them; emotionally, physically and sometimes economically.

• Love does not communicate with fists. Love does not deny you medical care or deprive you from sleep. Love does not humiliate you or break down your self-worth. Love does not threaten or intimidate you. Love does not exhibit cruelty to animals or children and, very important, love does not rape or force you to engage in sexual activity against your will. Every person deserves to be loved and be treated with respect and dignity. Is your love making you happy, symbolizing the hearts, kisses and gifts of Valentine’s Day OR is your love physically hurting you, leaving marks on your body, emotionally breaking you down and scaring your inner being? Make sure your love is love and not a wishful thinking, denying the reality of domestic violence. Love does not leave marks.

• Love does not isolate. Abusive partners often try to cut the partner off from all resources and support systems. If you have friends, you are “cheap” or “cheating”. If you are close to your family, you are “tied to the apron strings”. They may not let you use the car and may try to keep you from working. Gradually you will become completely isolated and totally dependent on the abuser.

a long lasting, fulfilling marriage IS A CHOICE Millions of couples the world over will testify that the incredible feelings of falling in love do not last forever. While I do suggest that you do all you can to make that stage last as long as possible, I also encourage you to realise that it will settle. In my opinion, there are 5 stages to a long term relationship.

• The Courtship Stage I like to call this the marketing or lying phase. It’s when you both show each other how wonderful you can be when you are both trying your very very best one hundred percent of the time. It’s fun. It’s easy. It’s sexy.

• The Living together / Engagement / Honeymoon Stage This is also a really easy going time. Sporadic arguments but both of you are congruent and working at the relationship. There is lots of compromise and chivalry during this phase.

to stay or you are wondering what went wrong and hoping to make the next one work.

• Then the True Love / Friendship Stage Scott Peck defines Love as, “One’s willingness to expend energy for another’s Spiritual growth.” Dr. Demartini defines love as occurring at the cusp of challenge and support – you see we need both unconditional as well as tough love in any relationship. I define friendship as when you know someone fully, both their light and dark side, and are still able to accept them for who they are. So the True Love Stage can only come with time, it’s when you fall out of infatuation into reality, when you see each other for what you really are, warts and all, and still remain friends through thick and thin. I can honestly say that I love Jax more

• The Getting to know you Properly today than when we got married. This is stage because I know her better and we have Now this is the real acid test. This is when you start to see glimpses of the other side of each other. Some resentment may set in. some power games may appear. This is the time when you start falling out of lust and into reality. That cute twitch with the sniff is not quite as cute anymore. Many couples who confuse love and lust start to feel that they are falling out of love and start looking around for the pure chemistry of the courtship phase. This is when you see each other for who you really are, warts and all, and make the decision to stay. I assume if you are reading this book you chose

24

become great friends. I often tell people to marry their best friend because when the dust settles from the chemical stage (oestrogen and testosterone) all that you have left is your friendship.

• And finally Growing Old Together Well this is the ultimate goal right? When we get married we make commitments for life. What we really want is to still be happy together at 80 years old and I can assure you at 80, you had better have a great friendship, you are going to need it! My role models here are Mr and Mrs Williams. Mr Williams was absolutely

besotted with Dalene. He affirmed it all the time and she blushed so beautifully when he complimented her. Jax and I were privileged to have them at our wedding and to be at their 50th wedding anniversary. I aspire to be like them.

falling in love Scott Peck in his famous book, “The road less travelled” essentially explained this phenomena as, “The body having a chemical reaction to or with another person in which the two temporarily seem to become one to such an extent that they get their clothes off and procreate”. He essentially asserts that the falling in love period is a trick the body plays on us in order for us to get into the sack and ensure the longevity of the human race.

falling in friendship Someone once said, “Falling in love is easy, any fool can do that. Staying in love, however, takes real skill”. Personally I believe that falling into friendship is more important than falling in lust or falling in love.

This is an excerpt from the book, “So you’re married, now what? Written by the marriage expert, Stephen van Basten

The Boeing “Seven Oh Seven”

T

he Boeing 707 made its first flight on the 15th of July 1954. It is a mid size, narrow body, four engine jet airliner. Boeing Commercial Airplanes produced the 707 from 1958-1979 with a total of 1010 aircraft built.

Different variants of the aircraft were built which had a capacity from 140 to 219 passengers and a range of 4630 to 10650 km The 707 was developed as Boeing’s first jet airliner and had a swept wing design with podded engines (engine hangs below the wing) It was a hugely successful commercial airliner and dominated air transport in the 60’s and 70’s. This established Boeing, as one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in the world and the 707’s design has been the base of most of their aircraft developed since then. On August the 7th 1955 Boeings chief test pilot Tex Johnston performed a display to promote the 707 to airline executives from around the world who were in Seattle for a conference. There was a crowd of 250 000 people. At 490 mph, Tex performed a barrel roll in front of the stunned crowd – and then just to prove a point, he did another barrel roll! This was all done without the knowledge of Bill Allen (president of Boeing). Later, when the Boeing president asked Tex what he thought he was doing, the reply was “Selling the airplane” There is a famous photo taken by the flight engineer out the passenger window from the upside down Boeing over Seattle.

26

The Boeing 707 was operated by most major airlines throughout the world, including many variants used by the military. The South African Air force operated 707’s as air-to-air re-fueling tankers. In 1958 South African Airways ordered 3 707’s, which were delivered in 1960. SAA had a total fleet of 10 Boeing 707’s, serving the airline from 1960-1980. As of 2015, 172 707’s had been lost in accidents with 3022 fatalities. On the 20th of April 1968, a 6-week-old Boeing 707 belonging to SAA crashed near Windhoek killing all 123 people on board. With a maximum cruise speed of 977km/h at 40 000 feet and a range of over 10 000km, the Boeing 707 was way ahead of its time and the world leader in jet transport.

They were in tears and could not believe the goodwill of the Pretoria schools and community. Flourish Oluwamakinde, Head Girl for PHSG, gave the following message to the Knysna community: “The effects of the fire that has completely changed the lives of the people of Knysna has touched the hearts of the PHSG community. Numerous donations from money to clothes, toiletries and shoes were made by learners, teachers, parents, Old Girls (Alumni) and members of the PHSG community.” It makes me proud to see the effort that so many learners made even when helping to wash, sort and bring in donations in the space of three days. This truly goes to show that when a community of people come together, good things can happen to bring forth a world of change in someone else’s life. We sympathise with the people of Knysna and I know that as a community we will continue to lend a helping hand wherever and whenever we can. I hope this to be a life lesson, not just to the PHSG community but to everyone that we must always think of others in crisis and what they are going through in order to make the selfless act of caring.”

PHSG wins Blue Bulls Cheering Contest The Blue Bulls offered several schools Blue Bulls Tickets to their match against the Highlanders on Saturday, 27 May. Pretoria schools arrived to take place in the cheering contest in which learners cheered and chanted to win a visit from the Blue Bulls. The MC announced each school before the game started and squeals of delight were heard throughout the stadium when PHSG was announced the winners of the competition at the end of the match. A truly well-deserved win and some young ladies were even left without voices after they had given it their all to put PHSG on the map and make themselves heard. The Blue Bulls will be visiting the school early in the new term. Art Exhibition The Grade 12 Visual Art learners presented a site specific art exhibition that dealt with current social issue this term. Each learner chose a social issue that they could relate to in some way. There was not limit to the media they were allowed to use hence the large variety. The girls explored video, photography, wire work and painted on a large variety of surfaces from the tiles in the Art Centre bathroom to slices of wood and concrete blocks. The artworks were installations that were set up in specific places that added to the message of the artwork. The audience were invited to participate in the artworks and were guided into dark areas with whispering voices, they were also invited to burn their comments on judgements. Some of the issues the learners chose were water wastage, noise pollution, child suicide, pollution and many more. The exhibition will be set up for the night of the proms music concert again. Anyone attending this concert is invited to first walk through the art centre to experience the art and learners comments on current social issues. PHSG learner helps host #chatNOU Our learner, Misha de Beer appeared on kykNET channel 146 on 24th May. She did a fantastic job in assisting to present #chatNOU and represent our fantastic school!

GRACE

Part 17

Is Sin being downplayed today? Johan Jordaan

T

his month we examine sin from a grace perspective. Before you read on, let me make one thing very clear: I, JOHAN JORDAAN, AM AGAINST SIN; please do not accuse me of promoting sin. But, what is sin? In both the Greek and Hebrew languages it simply means to ‘miss the mark’ and comes from the art of archery. You either aim short or long (shortcomings and transgressions). Sin is a very controversial matter and people will vehemently differ from me. That is because they do not understand that sin under the New Covenant is not the same as sin under the Old Covenant. In Heb 8:12 we read that under the new Covenant God will ‘remember our sins no more’. Under the Old Covenant sin brought curses, wrath and the withdrawal of blessings. But under now God does not even remember our sins. How can our sins therefore invoke God’s wrath or curse? This is very different from the Old Covenantal view of sin. Did God change? No, the covenant changed! God can deal differently with us now. So has God gone soft on sin? Not at all, He made Jesus pay for every individual sin ever committed or to be committed. God has already received full payment for my sin; so if He penalises me for my sin in any way then Jesus’ sacrifice was insufficient and it would also bring the legal principle of ‘double jeopardy’ into play. It would mean that God

32

requires that my sins be paid for twice. But what does Paul have to say about sin? In Romans 3 to 7 he explains the relationship between sin and Law. Let’s look at sin from a New Covenantal perspective: 1. The Law causes us to sin (Rom 7:713). 2. Sin is not imputed to us when there is no Law (Rom 5:13). 3. The Law is the power behind sin (1Cor 15:56). 4. God does not remember our sins any longer (Heb 8:12). 5. Sin does not rule over you when you are under grace (Rom 6:14-15). When we read the scriptures quoted above we realise that Jesus completely broke the power that sin had in our lives when He nailed the Law to His cross (Col 2:14-15). He took away the sting of sin so that the Father does not even remember our sins anymore. Paul says in Rom 5:20 that when sin increases God answers with – more grace! Not with some curse. Not with disease. Now that’s the New Covenant – too good to be true! Are we therefore free to sin – I mean the result is always more grace? No, Paul answers this way: Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Are we to remain in sin so that

grace may increase? 2 Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? (NET) We died to sin – how can we still live in it? We are freed from sin: Rom 6:18 and having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness. (NET)

let me ask you this: what about the sins that you forgot to confess or never even knew that you committed? If confession is a requirement then you are still indebted because of the un-confessed sin. Paul never even mentions this principle. If this is such a pillar of our faith then Paul is guilty of a Sin simply lost its power. Under the Old huge oversight. Should we not rather thank Covenant sin and obedience ruled; now our Father and praise Jesus for the cross grace rules. God answers sin with grace and that overcame sin? not wrath or curse. He does not abandon us like in the Old Testament. Sin does not Under the New Covenant our Father is no separate me from God anymore. It does longer obsessed with sin – we are. It has not make Him back off. It does not make actually become hard to define sin now: Him angry. It simply causes Him to be more the main one being to reject Jesus and the gracious. I know that many people cannot second to live a selfish loveless life. The see sin this way. For them sin is still the last one has the potential to make sinners wedge that separates us from God. It still of us all because how much is enough, but invokes God’s wrath. It still brings curse. I simply refuse the label of SINNER. I am But when we read Galatians we see that it a son and therefore the righteousness of is the practice of ‘keeping the Law’ that is God (2Cor 5:21). That’s my label. Sin cannot responsible for the curses in our lives! (Gal rule over me now and Satan has nothing to 3:10) accuse me of which makes him crazy! Grace is the key to overcoming sin. You cannot overcome sin by trying harder. We have all tried it but it only produces a shallow behaviour change that is often short lived. But if you want to overcome sin, embrace the gospel of grace – that frees you from sin and gives you victory over sin. Remember Rom 6:14 For sin will have no mastery over you, because you are not under law but under grace. (NET)

Come; let’s shake off the Old Covenant and its legacy of rubbish that we imported into our theology and into our lives. The New Covenant is just so much better. Next month we will look at the very important issue of faith; the basis of our relationship with our Father and the currency of the New Covenant.

Listen to what Charles H Spurgeon had to say about sin and grace: “There is no doctrine so designed to overcome sin as the gospel of the grace of God. Anyone who says that it is a licentious doctrine does not know anything at all about it”. Yes, people say that when we preach grace people will sin. But have they not noticed that people already sin? At least grace has a promise associated with it that it can overcome sin, unlike the Law that produces sin. That brings us to another very contentious matter – confession of sin. Since God does not remember our sins, is it really necessary to confess them? Before you answer yes

Chartreux By Zelda Smit

I

n 1558, after the loss of his beloved cat, French poet Joachin du Bellay wrote a poem about his cat (Belaud). Years later this is thought to be one of the earliest references to the French grey cat. Often compared to a mime because of his silent but communicative and sometimes silly nature, the Chartreux is rumoured to be associated with the Carthusian order in France. Although this legend cannot be confirmed, the cat would have made the perfect companion for this silent, solitary order. This natural breed was commonly found in France, where they performed rat patrol in stables, shops and homes. Sadly they were also prized by furriers for their thick blue pelts. A type of luxurious wool called: “pile de Chartreux” may have taken its name from the soft, woolly coats of the cats. As with most cat breeds, it is not known where the breed got its name or where it was developed. Free-livings groups of the cats lived in Paris and other parts of France until the early 1900’s. They are not much valued except for their skins and aptitude for vermin control. It was only after World War I that cat lovers took steps to preserve the breed. By the end of World War II there were no more freeliving cats found. The Chartreux is still an uncommon breed, which is often mistaken for the British Blue, and they are less known in Europe, even in their homeland France. Unlike most breeds, the Chartreux has changed very little over time, and remain as Bellay wrote:

“Masterpiece of nature In the whole world of cats,”

The Chartreux has a sturdy, powerful body, with a short thick, water repellent coat, deep orange eyes, a rounded, broad head and full cheeks with medium ears that are high on the head. His body is primitive, husky and robust with broad shoulders, a deep chest and relatively short, finely boned legs on round medium sized paws. With a lively, flexible tail that is heavy at the base and tapered to an oval tip. The Chartreux has an ample body with solid muscle mass which will surprise you when you pick him up. He is supple and agile. They are slow growers, especially the males which may only reach full size when they are 4 or 5 years old. Their coats can be any shade of blue-grey and the tips of the fur look brushed with silver. Kittens may have ghost barring. The beautiful picture is completed with slate-grey nose leather, blue lips and rose-taupe paw pads. This cat has a mid-range personality, while he is no social butterfly; he most certainly cannot be compared to a shy wallflower either. They are silent, but if you pay attention you will quickly learn how they use their pumpkin-coloured eyes to communicate with you. They have excellent timing and pouncing abilities and will gladly show off their acrobatic flips. Being an attentive, gentle companion they will stay close to their people, while their calm adaptable natures leave them happy to stay home alone while you go to work. This cat has a sunny, polite disposition and he will do his best to obey the rules. He has a tolerant and gentle nature which will make him walk way

rather than scratch when he is not happy with the treatment he receives. He will even accept cat-friendly dogs. Joachim du Bellay Eptiah on a pet cat My life seems dull and flat, And, as you’ll wonder what. Magney, has made this so, I want you first to know It’s not for rings or purse But something so much worse; Three days ago I lost All that I value most, My treasure, my delight, I cannot speak, or write, Or even think of what Belaud, my small grey cat Meant to me, tiny creature, Masterpiece of nature In the whole world of cats, And certain death to rats! – Whose beauty was worthy Of Immortality. My only memory Of him annoying me Is that, sometimes at night When rats began to gnaw And rustle in my straw Mattress, he’s waken me Seizing most dexterously Upon them in their flight. Now that the cruel hand Of death comes to demand My bodyguard from me. My sweet security Gives way to hideous fears Rats come and gnaw my ears, And mice and rats at night Chew up the lines I write!”

WASTE-TO-ENERGY

TOMORROW’S ENERGY--TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY--YESTERDAY’S WASTE By: Dr Johan van Dyk – The Waste Group

I

n a growing world, where the conventional forms of energy are fast moving towards extinction as well as contributing generously to global concerns and the greenhouse effect / global warming, the need to innovatively apply greener and alternative or unconventional energy sources has become crucial for the existence of the future. Waste-toEnergy, and specifically municipal solid waste, is the generation of energy in the form of heat or electricity from waste. Producing electricity is only one reason to convert waste. Converting waste also reduces the amount of material that would probably be buried in landfills. Waste conversion in a scientifically developed flow scheme can result in a 100% reduction of landfill, and even the mineral matter (ash) from the waste conversion process can be utilized as fertilizer or cement industry.

36

Each month a million tons of waste is produced, and mostly become part of a landfill. This causes huge environmental impacts in terms of wildlife, ecosystems and to human health. In the last decade many new waste treatment plants have been commissioned and developed new ways to generate energy (power of fuel) from landfill waste. Energy from waste offers recovery of energy (valuable carbon molecules in paper and plastics and food waste) by conversion of these nonrecyclable materials through various processes including thermal and non-thermal pyrolysis, gasification or anaerobic digestion to clean and renewable energy, with reduced carbon emissions (>20% compared to conventional coal power plants) and a minimal environmental impact than any other form of energy.

To illustrate the waste-to-energy conversion in numbers: 1 ton of waste can produce enough electricity to supply >400 average households or 200 litre of low sulphur diesel*

Plasma Gasification as the name suggests uses plasma technologies (at very high temperatures) to obtain syngas or synthesis gas. This process also runs at higher temperatures, with the major advantage and difference compared to combustion / incineration is that significantly less CO2 is produced with a synthesis gas with a higher heating value, thus a more efficient process. Steam and/or oxygen can also be used in this technology where usually fossil fuels or organic substances are used. Depolymerisation uses thermal decomposition where in the presence of water, the organic compounds are heated at high temperatures. This process of thermal decomposition is called hydrous pyrolysis in scientific terms.

Ernest Hemmingway 1899 – 1961 Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21st in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. He started his career as a writer in a newspaper office is Kansas City at the age of seventeen. After the United States entered the First World War, he joined a volunteer ambulance unit in the Italian army. Serving at the front, he was wounded, and was decorated by the Italian Government. After his return to the United States, he became a reporter for Canadian and American newspapers and was soon sent back to Europe to cover such events as the Greek Revolution. During the twenties, Hemingway became a member of the group of expatriates Americans in Paris, which he described in his first important work – The Sun Also Rises (1926). Equally successful was A Farewell to Arms (1929), the study of an American ambulance officer’s disillusionment in the war and his role as a deserter. Hemingway used his experiences as

44

a reporter during the civil war in Spain as the background for his most ambitious novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940). Among his later works, the most outstanding is the short novel, The Old Man and The Sea (1952), the story of an old fisherman’s journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat. Hemingway - himself a great sportsman – liked to portray soldiers, hunters, bullfighters – though, at times primitive people whose courage and honesty are set against the brutal ways of modern society and who in this confrontation lose hope and faith. His straightforward prose, his spare dialogue, and his prediction for understatement are particularly effective in his short stories, some of which are collected in Men without Women (1927), The Fifth Column and the First Forty Nine Stories (1938). Hemingway died in Idaho during 1961.
