We’re celebrating

A Year of AWESOME

www.featzpublishing.com

Editor’s Message The chilly month of June is upon us and we have already had a taste of a few cold winters’ mornings. If, like me, you battle with the colder weather I am sure you are wrapped up in jackets, boots and scarves while regularly sipping on delicious soups. (Just a few of my favourite winter things) The winter solstice is, however, only 21 days away, marking the middle of winter, it serves as a good reminder that we don’t have long to go. June is a busy month, with World Ocean Day, Men’s Health Month, World Blood Donor Month (blood saves lives), World Environmental Day and Father’s Day (Dear Old Dad, Deserves just as much attention as Mom received last month), Community Ch@ turns one and of course, some very special family birthdays during June as well. With all that ahead I am not sure if we will get to touch sides. I must say thank you to everyone who has supported the magazine during the last twelve months. I look forward to spending another year of sharing exciting, positive content with you. To Dad – as you celebrate your 80th birthday, we have to say you have been a true inspiration to us every single day. Your love, strength and support shines brightly every day, reminding us just how blessed we are to have you in our lives. You are truly the best Dad and given a choice, we would choose you every time! Love you lots. Please remember to tell your friends about Community Ch@ magazine, and share the magazine with them – we are still giving away books or vouchers to one lucky subscriber every month – visit our website for more information. Until next month, wrap up warm and happy reading!

Father’s Day Baking for Kids

Leon Day - June 25th While we could not find out who created the day or when it started - it marks 6 months until Christmas day. Leon is Noel spelled backwards and is a day some crafters begin planning their homemade gifts and decorations. It can also be a day for those who miss the holidays to have a mini celebration in June. Crafters, get your hot glue guns ready! Start planning your ugly sweaters now and for the eager beavers it is time to start shopping in order to beat the crowds!

Father’s Day Where and when did it start?

In honour of dear old dad, we took a look into the history of Father’s Day. Sadly, in an attempt to make some quick cash, retailers and marketers have destroyed the original meaning of Father’s Day. A holiday that was supposed to honour dad and enumerates his special qualities now is used to sell ties, socks and aftershave dads probably don’t need. Maybe with a better understanding of why the concept of Father’s Day was created, we can better celebrate and honour the fathers who raised us. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910. Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honouring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother’s day sermon at church in 1909. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise. Sonora will probably be rather unhappy to find out that Mother’s Day still gets the lion’s share of attention today. Sonora’s dad, William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciation for all the hard work and love William gave to her

and her siblings, Sonora thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. Other countries also picked up on the idea of Father’s Day and many followed suit by celebrating on the third Sunday of June. This Father’s Day, don’t buy dad just another tacky tie or a “world’s greatest dad” mug, take a few moments and write dad a card expressing some of the things you love and admire about him. It doesn’t have to be mushy, just make sure he knows that you are glad to have him as your dad!

What Makes A Great Father? “Anyone can be a father, but it takes a real man to be a daddy.”- Anonymous A good father makes all the difference in a child’s life. He’s a pillar of strength, support and discipline. His work is endless and, oftentimes, thankless. But in the end, it shows in the sound, well-adjusted children he raises. On Father’s Day, much of the world will take the time to appreciate the work of good fathers. While you show your admiration for your own dad, take the time to see if you yourself have what it takes to be a great father, whether you have children or plan to. A good father loves his children, but he doesn’t let them get away with murder. He strongly disapproves of his children’s misdeeds, using tough love to prove a point. He does this through the power of his words, not his fists. Likewise, a father doesn’t reward his children for actions that are expected of them, such as helping with house chores or performing well in school. If his child drops out of school, the father demands that he provide for himself, considering the child no longer wants to invest in his own future. A good father realizes that his children are human, and that making mistakes is part of growing up. Spending money recklessly, getting into minor car accidents, getting drunk and sick for the first time, even dating questionable women are rites of passage, and a good father recognizes this. However, he makes it clear that repeated irresponsibility won’t be tolerated.

HE TEACHES HIS CHILDREN TO APPRECIATE THINGS A good father never lets his children take what they have for granted. From the food on the table to the good education he’s paying for, a good father will make his children see the value in everything they

have. He’ll ask his child to get a job to help pay for a part of his first car, and take the time to illustrate how important a good education is. He doesn’t let his kids treat him like an ATM. He teaches his kid to appreciate important purchases.

HE’S OPEN-MINDED A good father understands that times, people and tastes change over the years, and doesn’t try to maintain some gold standard of his own time. For instance, he realizes that body piercings are more commonplace than before and that people talk more candidly about personal issues. In other words, he allows his children to be citizens of their day and age.

HE ACCEPTS THAT HIS KIDS AREN’T EXACTLY LIKE HIM Everyone is different and a father knows this well. He won’t expect his kids to live the same kind of life he does, and do the same kind of work. He also respects their values and opinions, as long as they don’t harm the family or anyone else. To use a pop culture example, he’s like Martin Crane from Frasier; the everyman blue-collar dad who allowed his pompous sons to steer their lives in a different direction, even if he didn’t quite agree with them.

HE SPENDS QUALITY TIME WITH HIS CHILDREN A dad knows how to have fun with his kids too, taking them out to games, movies, and supporting their sports teams by attending their matches. He takes the time to listen to his kids and have a good, easy chat www.featzpublishing.com

5 with them. He also makes time to help them with their homework, every night if necessary.

HE LEADS BY EXAMPLE A good father is above the old “do as I say, not as I do” credo. He will not smoke if he doesn’t want his kids to do it, and definitely won’t drink heavily. He teaches them to deal with conflict with a family member and with others by being firm but reasonable at the same time. A good father also illustrates the importance of affection by professing his love for their mother in front of them. And he won’t fight with her in their presence. In all, he adheres to the values he’d like his children to follow.

HE TEACHES HIS KIDS LESSONS A father figure is the prime source of knowledge in the ways of men, and teaches his kids accordingly. From shaving to being courageous, a father moulds his kids into well-rounded members of society. He especially instructs them in proper etiquette, on being honest and keeping their word, and on being thankful.

HE PROTECTS HIS FAMILY, NO MATTER WHAT As the main provider of security and necessities, a father will do whatever he can for his family. He will put his own safety on the line to keep them out of harm’s way. This is how a father instils in his children the importance of personal sacrifice.

HE’S SUPPORTIVE AND LOYAL Although he may be a rugby fanatic, if his son doesn’t share his love for the game, he accepts it. A good father is also his children’s public defender, standing up for them when needed. He waits for privacy to administer discipline. A safety net, a good father is also the person his kids turn to when things go wrong.

HE SHOWS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE This is the greatest quality of a good father. Even though he gets upset at his children’s faults and may lament that they did not attain what he hoped for them, a father loves his children no less for it.

HE CHALLENGES HIS KIDS A father wants his children to be the best they can be, and gives them challenges that help them grow as human beings. This means giving them some liberty to face setbacks and resolve conflicts on their own. Or it could be a task, such as building something for the house.

There are few things as valuable as a father who will do everything he can, and provide all the tools he has so that his children can become better than him. So this Father’s Day, show your dad you appreciate what a great man he is and take the time to make yourself just as grand.

African Pygmy-Kingfisher As the smallest of all Kingfishers, the African Pygmy-Kingfisher is approximately 11 – 13cm in length – about the size of a sparrow. This small Kingfisher has rufous underparts and a blue back extending down to the tail. The dark blue crown of the adult separates it from the African Dwarf-Kingfisher.

The smaller size and violet wash on the ear coverts distinguish it from the similar Malachite Kingfisher. The natalensis subspecies occurring in the South of the range has paler underparts and a blue spot above the white ear patch. Males and females look alike and juveniles have less extensive violet on their ear coverts and a black rather than an orange bill. The African Pygmy-Kingfisher is a secretive, unobtrusive bird that is usually found singly or in pairs. Unlike many other Kingfishers it rarely eats fish, but rather feeds mainly on insects, occasionally supplemented with small vertebrates. It usually hunts by sitting on a perch, trying to locate prey. Once it locates something, it dives to the ground, picking up the prey item before returning to its perch. The African Pygmy-Kingfisher is an intraAfrican breeding migrant, arriving in Southern Africa between September and October. Once the breeding season is over,

around March, the juveniles and adults migrate back to other parts of Africa.

8

The African Pygmy-Kingfisher nests in burrows dug into an earthen bank, such as erosion gullies, stream banks, termite mounds, trenches and pits. The egg-laying season peaks from October to December. It lays between 3 and 6 eggs, which are incubated by both sexes for roughly 18 days. The chicks stay in the nest for about 18 days, after which they rapidly develop hunting skills, becoming fully independent soon after fledging. The African Pygmy-Kingfisher is a small insectivorous Kingfisher found in the Afrotropics, mostly in woodland habitats. They are not threatened, although deforestation is a serious concern as it has damaged populations in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

White Pear – Apodytes Dimidiata This is the perfect tree for home gardens as it does not have messy fruit and is safe to plant near the house, not disturbing the foundations or paved areas.

10

T

his is a small bushy tree 4 to 5 metres tall but can reach a height of 20 metres when growing in a forest. It has evergreen, glossy, bright green leaves that have a paler green, dull underside. The bark is pale grey and smooth. The White Pear forms small white fragrant blooms.

South Africa.

The flowers are frequently produced in striking profusion. The fruit is berrylike, black and flattened. Fruits have a scarlet, fleshy, lateral appendage which gives the fruit a kidney shape, with a persistent, finger like style in the notch. Apodytes dimidiate is a protected tree in

known forest trees in South Africa as it is found from Table Mountain, along the coast through Kwa-Zulu Natal, Gauteng, Swaziland and Kenya. The White Pear thrives in well-drained, compost-rich soil. Young plants are relatively slow growing, but they will grow fairly fast as they grow bigger. This tree needs to be protected from frost for the first year. The excellent smell of the flowers is attractive to insects, and that is good for pollination. The red aril makes the fruits very attractive to birds including Blackeyed Bulbul, Rameron Pigeon, Redwinged and Glossy Starlings, Guinea Fowl and Pied Barbets. The White Pear is an excellent tree to use in a landscape in areas where you need to establish shade right through the year. It also serves very well as a background planting in a small garden. This is a nice shade tree to be planted in areas near swimming pools. The root system will not lift up paving and foundations. The fruits are not fleshy and therefore cause no mess on paved areas.

The White Pear occurs in coastal evergreen bush, at the margins of medium altitude evergreen forest, in open woodlands and on grassy mountain slopes, often among rocks. It is a constituent of the forests such as Knysna, George, Tsitsikma, Alexandria, Amatola, Umgoye and Dukuduku. It is, in fact, one of the bestwww.featzpublishing.com

Goberian

T

he Goberian is a medium to large cross of the Golden Retriever and the Siberian Husky. Also called a hybrid, he should live between 10 to 15 years. They take part in a wide range of activities including sighting, hunting, agility, weight pulling, guarding, sledding and search and rescue. As you can see he is a very active dog, but he is also very sociable and friendly.

The Goberian is a friendly dog who loves to be social and be with people. He tends to have the gentleness of the Golden Retriever but more drive which they get from the Husky. He can be independent sometimes and is intelligent. He is loyal and affectionate with his family. The Goberian is alert so he can be a good watchdog. He loves to be active, especially with his people. He is good with other pets and children and cheerful each day. Your Goberian will bring a smile to your face every day. The Goberian is eager to please and is usually quite obedient making him easy to train. He will sometimes bond more closely with one particular family member, but he is still friendly and affectionate with other family members. The Goberian weighs between 15 and 36 kilograms, and measure from 50 to 60 centimetres at the shoulder. He often has blue eyes like the Husky but can sometimes have the brown eyes of the Golden Retriever. His head is rounded and well-proportioned and his ears hang down. He has a narrow muzzle and a body that often looks more like a Golden Retriever. His tail though is more like a Husky’s as are his legs. His coat is double, with the inner coat being soft and dense and the outer coat being long and straight to a little wavy. It gives good protection from both hot and cold weather. This is a very active dog and he will need exercise every day to keep him well behaved, happy and healthy. If you enjoy jogging, cycling, walking and hiking, the Goberian is a perfect companion for you, as he needs at least an hour’s brisk exercise daily. The Goberian will become destructive, digging, chewing and even barking if he doesn’t get enough exercise. While it is not very easy to find a breeder, the Goberian requires minimal grooming, is generally healthy and a good family dog for the active family who is always on the go.

Winter Solstice NOW IS THE TIME TO HONOUR THE REBIRTH OF THE SUN, TO REMEMBER THE LIGHT IN THE DARKEST PART OF THE SEASON WITH HOPE OF GOOD THINGS TO COME AND THE PROMISE OF A RENEWED LIFE

JUNE, 21

st

18

This year, let your winter solstice celebration be an occasion to look deeply at small things, to feel at home in the world and to be just where you belong. Early nightfall. Crisp mornings. The sharp silhouette of leaf-bare branches. Orion marching across the evening sky. These are some familiar signs of winter. We often speak of turning inward during these darker months, becoming quiet and introspective, staying home more often, sleeping longer. Yet there’s another side to winter that contrasts with our natural inclination to rest and contemplate, a side that insists we shop til we drop, and eat and drink more than we care to. The Winter solstice, which takes place on June 21st, can be a profound way to tune into the magic and beauty of the season. For people throughout the ages, from the ancient Egyptians and Celts to the Hopi, midwinter has been a significant time of ritual, reflection, and renewal. Creating a meaningful celebration of winter solstice, can help us cultivate a deeper connection to nature and family and all the things that matter most to us. Winter can become a time of feeding the spirit and nurturing the soul rather than just the body. While we don’t know how long people have been celebrating the solstice, we know that ancient cultures built huge stone structures designed to align perfectly with the sun at specific times, such as dawn or high noon. And some ancient peoples performed sacred rituals and made offerings when the sun dipped below the horizon to ensure its daily return, especially during the darkest days. Richard Heinberg, author of Celebrate the Solstice: Honoring the Earth’s Seasonal Rhythms through Festival and Ceremony (Quest Books, 1993) describes the solstices as “times of danger and opportunity; times for special alertness and aliveness.” In Iran, families often kept fires burning all night to assist the battle between the light and dark forces. In ancient Rome, where it was called Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, or the Birthday of the Unconquered Sun, masters even celebrated as equals with their slaves. Throughout history, celebrating the solstice has been a way to renew our connection with each other and with the numinous through acts of goodwill, special rituals, and heightened awareness. “Solstice” comes from two Latin words: sol meaning “sun” and sistere meaning “to stand still” because it appeared as though the sun and moon had stopped moving across the sky. This longest night of the year, followed by a renewal of the sun, demonstrates the cyclical order of the cosmos. In this way, celebrating the solstice can be a beautiful remembrance that our lives are part of a larger order, always changing, always renewing.

World Oceans Day

22

A global day of ocean celebration and collaboration for a better future World Oceans Day June 8th

Our Oceans, Our Future

Plastic pollution poses a threat to human health, kills and harms marine life, damages and alters habitats and can have substantial negative impacts on local economies. Unlike many ocean issues, The Ocean Project’s Research shows that pollution, especially plastic pollution, is already widely accepted as a big problem that we need to and can address. The first step of avoiding of avoiding disposable plastic bags is likely to be seen as a difficult but not impossible way for an individual to help. More than 80% of marine litter comes from land-based sources. Businesses and government in the US, alone, spend a combined total of $11.5 billion on cleaning up litter. The primary direct threat to marine life is entanglement or ingestion. Sea turtles, birds and fish alike accidentally mistake plastic for food and choke or get sick by ingesting it. We can make a difference, especially if we work together! It is distressing to think about how much plastic is almost unavoidable sometimes, it can seem useless to take action. But if many of us act together, we can reduce the amount of plastic in the ocean, and show the world that we demand less disposable plastic in our everyday lives! Plastic pollution affects hundreds of different types of ocean wildlife, from massive whales to microscopic corals. Read how a DVD case killed a whale here. Ocean plastic trash has serious economic consequences for people, but it can also be dangerous to our health! Scientists are finding that chemicals in plastic consumed by fish may eventually travel up the food chain, and get into our bodies. While we might not be fortunate enough to have the ocean as our backyards, it is still part of our environment, and our responsibility to take pride in what we have and protect it for future generations. Next time you go shopping, see how many items you can purchase that aren’t wrapped in plastic. Remember, every little effort, no matter how small, will help to reduce the total usage of disposable plastic.

Part 16

I dare to call Him Dad A certain businessman owned a large conglomerate of companies. He built himself a seventy storey head office near his home with his office on the top floor. One day the son came home from school and as the car passed his dad’s office he ordered the chauffer to stop. Not knowing what was going on the chauffer stopped the car right in front of the building. The little boy jumped out of the car, dashed through the huge revolving doors and ran for the elevator. The poor security guard had no chance as the elevator doors closed. When he reached the seventieth floor he charged past his dad’s personal assistant who yelled that his father could not be disturbed because he was in an important board meeting. But the boy simply ran for the boardroom and entered unannounced. He ran past all the important people who managed his dad’s companies. When he reached his dad he unceremoniously hopped into his lap and started telling him about his day. The dad waved the PA and the rest of the people out: “Take a coffee break” he said. “But we just had one!” someone remarked. “Take another” he said as he swivelled his chair around to face away from the meeting who started drifting out of the boardroom. For the next twenty minutes it was only him and his son. He listened, gave advice, smiled, cried and

laughed with the boy whom he loved more than his own life. When the son was done he hugged and kissed his dad, hopped off and left the same way he came in. The dad just sat there for a while. When the board members had taken their seats again, the dad – with obvious pride in his voice – turned around and reminded them: “He is the reason you all have work! This company exists purely for his benefit. He is my heir”. Then his expression changed and he once again became the demanding CEO who expected the best of his employees whom he paid what they were worth to the business. The employees (servants) receive their pay at the end of each month. If you can contribute much to the company, you receive more than someone who contributes less. But in the end you can earn only so much. But not the son – he inherits. He does not work. He enjoys life with his friends. One day he will go and study at his dad’s expense. He will receive a car and pocket money so that he can have the benefit of his dad’s labours. Eventually he will inherit the company. All that his dad hopes to get in return is love. Yes, that is all. That is what the Father in the parable of the prodigal son told the oldest son: “You are always with me” (i.e. we are intimate).

26 Now if you do not know your Daddy this way I suggest that you drop everything and get to know Him. Get rid of the notion that He is an angry old man with a little black book who writes down all your sins; whom you must fear. No, He is a loving, kind and patient parent to us – including the disobedient. He supplies, loves, protects, heals and leads. But to get the full benefit we must learn to trust and believe Him. We must know Him as He is – always ready to help and comfort. He is not a distant and aloof God. He is involved and present in every moment of our lives, jealously watching over us. That’s my Daddy and that’s why I love Him so much that it hurts. I explained last month that this intimate relationship is only for sons, not for servants. Their relationship is a work relationship, they receive tasks and obedience is paramount. They fear because they are only as good as their last performance. They can be out on the street the next day. Their value lies in their

performance, in what they can contribute. That is how it worked under the Old Covenant. But when you subject yourself to the Old Covenant of Law, you operate at that level. To know your Daddy you must become a son and step into the New Covenant. Only then can you call Him Dad. The New Covenantal picture of the Father is very different from that of the Old Covenant. And also very different to that of our earthly dads – good as they might have been, they were all fallible. Do not superimpose a flawed picture of your dad onto our Father who is perfect. Jesus showed us the Father – as good. And that is His DNA; goodness. Believers all over make much of His holiness. But that is also Old Covenantal; the focus now is on His goodness. Not that He is less holy; no it is just that the focus has shifted. Our Daddy wants us to know that He is good. He is love. Why should I live in fear? My Daddy loves me and cares about me. I. Am His beloved.

He has chosen me after all. I know that I am special to Him and that I do not need to worry about a thing. And when hard times come, He will carry me through. It all works together for my good. I have stopped worrying about earthly things; comfort, security and status. I count that all dung. Only my relationship with Him matters. Even my obedience to Him is of no importance. That’s my Daddy and I’m crazy about Him because He is loving and kind and patient and crazy about me! Rom 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor heavenly rulers, nor things that are present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (NET) Next month we will take a closer look at sin under our New Covenant.

The Yowling Scott

There is no sound like the “Banshee Yowl” of the Scott Squirrel being put through its paces.

The Scott Motorcycle was built by Alfred Scott (18751923) a British Motorcycle designer who founded the Scott Motorcycle Company. He was an inventor who had more than 50 patents to his name.

28 The motorcycles he built were very successful in competitions, winning the fastest laps at Isle Of Man TT from 19111914 with outright wins in 1912 and 1913. Scott’s motorcycles were deemed to be “too efficient” for racing against other motorcycles of the same capacity and so their cubic capacity had to be multiplied by 1.32 for competitive purposes! Scott also built a car called the Scott Sociable and successfully built a small aircraft called the Flying Flee.

After Alfred Scott died in 1923, the Scott studied Scott Motorcycle Company continued engineering running until 1978. In 1922 they started and design and manufacturing the Scott Squirrel worked as an motorcycle for sale to the general public engineer at a ship – these had a 498cc or 596 cc two-stroke building company water-cooled engines with a three-speed where he learnt gearbox. Alfred Scott’s first motorcycle was developed on his home built 2hp twin cylinder motor, which was fitted to a bicycle. Scott started manufacturing boat engines in 1900 and started motorcycle production in 1908 with a vertical twostroke 450cc twin engine and a two-speed gearbox.

Having personally done a complete from the ground up nut and bolt restoration of a 1938 498cc Scott Squirrel, I can say they are awesome, very unique motorcycles. They are extremely fast, make a lot of noise with a lot of smoke. Eat Healthy. Start by taking small steps like saying no to super-sizing and yes to a healthy breakfast. Eat many different types of foods to get all the vitamins and minerals you need. Add at least one fruit and vegetable to every meal.

Get Moving. Play with your kids or grandkids. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Do yard work. Play a sport. Keep comfortable walking shoes handy at work and in the car. Most importantly, choose activities that you enjoy to stay motivated.

Make Prevention a Priority. Many health conditions can be detected early with regular checkups from your healthcare provider. Regular screenings may include blood pressure, cholesteral, glucose, prostate health and more.

“Recognizing and preventing men’s health problems is not just a man’s issue. Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters, men’s health is truly a family issue.” — Congressman Bill Richardson (May 1994)

100%

1994

Women are 100% more likely than men to visit the doctor for annual exams and preventative services.

On May 31, 1994 President Bill Clinton signed the bill establishing National Men’s Health Week.

1 in 2 men are diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime compared with 1 in 3 women.

In 2010, there were 88.9 men for every 100 women in the age group 65-69.

Cat Corner With his distinctive spotted coat and large size, the Bengal looks like a wild cat on the prowl, but although one of his ancestors is the small, wild Asian leopard cat, he is a domestic cat through and through. The Bengal is highly active and highly intelligent. This makes him fun to live with, but he can sometimes be challenging. In the whole, the Bengal is a confident, talkative, friendly cat who is always alert. Nothing escapes his notice He likes to play games, including fetch, and he’s a whiz at learning tricks. His nimble paws are almost as good as hands, and it’s a good thing he doesn’t have opposable thumbs or he would probably rule the world. Bored Bengal cats can also adopt some unconventional habits, including turning light switches on and off, fishing seals out of drains and excitedly plucking CDs from your DVD player.

Bengal Cats Life Span: 10 to 16 years

Fond of playing in water, the Bengal is not above jumping into the bath or strolling into the shower with you. Aquarium and pond fish may be at risk from his clever paws. He also loves to climb and can often be found perching at the highest point he can reach in the home. A tall cat tree or two is a must for this feline, as are puzzle toys that will challenge his intelligence. On the rare occasion that he isn’t swinging from chandeliers or swimming in your pool, the affectionate Bengal will be pleased to sit on your lap. It goes without saying that he will share your bed, and yes, he will steal the covers.

Father’s Day

baking for kids

It is always a challenge to find that perfect gift for Father’s Day, but you cannot go wrong with something homemade, especially if it’s also something edible. Below are some mouth-watering recipes that are perfect for making with kids young and old….

Chocolate and hazelnut thumb-print cookies This is a great recipe to make with kids because the food processor does most of the work. Younger children will enjoy rolling the dough into balls and marking their thumbprint before spooning the melted chocolate into the holes. Older kids can also do most of this recipe by themselves, so you can enjoy a coffee and watch all the hard work unfold...

Mixed fruit tart This is the perfect recipe for introducing children and teens to the art of making pastry. You’ll need to be a little more hands-on for this one, but if you’re cooking with young children they’ll gladly take credit for your pastry prowess. Let little ones get creative with fruity patterns or encourage them to simply pile the berries high at the end. Of course, their ultimate starring role will be presenting it to dad.

Sticky upside-down banana cake This stunning cake takes just 15 minutes of preparation, which should allow you to hold the attention of even the youngest of children. They’ll love the excitement of turning the cake out onto a plate and seeing the finished results. It’s best served warm, so if you really want to give dad a treat, give him some time out while you knock it up in the kitchen on the big day itself.

Blueberry scones These scones are as easy as pie to make but dad is still sure to be impressed. You don’t need to stick to traditional triangles – children can shape these whichever way they like! Serve with butter, cream and jam. They’re perfect for a surprise picnic too.

Banana pancakes with crispy bacon & syrup A lie in and brunch with the papers is probably the best present you can give a dad of young kids. Whisk the children downstairs and help them whip up a family brunch - older children can measure up the pancake ingredients and even the smallest of hands will be happy mashing up bananas. Serve with crispy bacon and maple syrup.

Medal cookies

Every hero deserves an iced medal cookie, and there is no better way to salute the dad in your life than with a bit of homemade arts and crafts. Little hands will love getting stuck into this creative project, just prepare yourself for a bit of a glitter explosion. Sieve the flour and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl. Pour in the melted butter mixture and the egg, and stir together to form a stiff-ish dough. Pop the dough in the fridge for 10 mins to chill and firm up.

Jammy heart drops No special cutter is needed for these beautiful biscuits, and there are plenty of little jobs for young cooks to help out with. Let the kids get busy piping jam and drizzling icing, they might not look perfect but they will be made with lots of love.

Dad’s chocolate drop cakes This five-star rated recipe is pretty much a guaranteed hit for any chocolate fan. Let the children decorate these chocolate treats with dad’s favourite sweets or nuts for a personal touch. There should be plenty to go round, so the kids will just have to hope that dad’s the sharing kind.

Blueberry pretzel cookies Chewy, sweet and salty these blueberry & pretzel cookies have it all, including some white chocolate chips thrown in. Small hands will have plenty of crushing and mixing fun.

Fascinating People The Montgolfier Brothers

A sheep, a rooster, and a duck the first ever passengers of the hot-air balloon!

Joseph-Michel – 26 Augu Jacques-Étienne 6 Janua

38

These French brothers were pioneer developers of the hot-air balloon and conducted the first untethered flights. Modifications and improvements to the basic Montgolfier design were incorporated in the construction of larger balloons that, in later years, opened the way to exploration of the upper atmosphere. Joseph and Étienne were two of sixteen children of Pierre Montgolfier, whose prosperous paper factories in the small town of Vidalon, near Annonay, in Southern France, ensured the financial support of their balloon experiments. While carrying on their father’s paper business, they maintained their interest in scientific experimentation. In 1782, they discovered that heated air, when collected inside a large lightweight paper or fabric bag, caused the bag to rise into the air. The Montgolfier’s made the first public demonstration of this discovery on June 4th, 1783, at the marketplace in Annonay. They filled their balloon with heated air by burning straw and wool under the opening at the bottom of the bag. The balloon rose into the air about 1,000 metres, remaining there some 10 minutes, and then settled to the ground more than 2.5 kilometres from where it rose. The Montgolfier’s travelled to Paris and then to Versailles, where they repeated the experiment with a larger balloon on September 19th, 1783, sending a sheep, a rooster, and a duck aloft as passengers. The balloon floated for about 8 minutes and landed safely about 3.2 kilometres from the launch site. On November 21st, 1783, the first manned untethered flight took place in a Montgolfier balloon with Pilatre de Rozier and François Laurent, marquis d’Arlandes, as passengers. The balloon sailed over Paris for 9 kilometres in about 25 minutes. The brothers were honoured by the French Académie des Sciences. They published books on aeronautics and continued their scientific careers. Joseph invented a calorimeter and the hydraulic ram, and Étienne developed a process for manufacturing vellum.

PRETORIA HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS Environment Sustainability (ESP) The annual Environment Sustainability Project hosted by the South African Institute of International Affairs has kicked off again. To help the learners choose their topics and start their research, our ESP girls were treated to a special site visit at the Department of Environmental Affairs on Tuesday the 9th May. It was a great privilege to be personally guided through their amazing and beautiful green building in Arcadia, learning about their use of solar energy and grey water, their interesting air-conditioning system and their indoor and vertical gardens. Thank you very much to SAIIA and the DEA for allowing us this wonderful opportunity that few will ever have. It was great to see that our country is taking leaps in the right direction to save the natural environment and, more importantly, that our girls as the next generation care about taking these leaps too.
