St. Patrick’ s Day 17 March Annually St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated around the world on the 17th of March – which marks the anniversary of Saint Patrick’s death. On this day which is the fourth most popular drinking day on the calendar, an average of 13 million pints of Guinness will be consumed around the world. Before you head of to your local pub to help your Irish friends celebrate the day, have a look at these St. Patrick’s Day facts. 1)

The colour green only became associated with the day after it was linked to the Irish independence movement in the late 18th century.

2)

St. Patrick was actually British, although he made his mark by introducing Christianity to Ireland in the year 432, Patrick wasn’t Irish. He was born to Roman parents in Scotland or Wales in the late fourth century.

3)

4)

holiday, which meant the nation’s pubs were closed. It was only in 1970 that the day was converted to a National holiday that pubs were open. 7)

According to Irish legend, the Saint used the three-leafed plant as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when he first introduced Christianity to Ireland.

8)

Corned beef and cabbage – a traditional St. Patrick’s Day staple doesn’t have anything to do with grain corn. It’s a nod to the large grains of salt that were historically used to cure meats – which were also known as “corn”

9)

A 2012 estimate pegged the total amount spent on beer for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations to be at around $245 million. (That’s a lot of beer!)

10) St. Patrick’s birth name was: Maewyn Succat – he changed his name to Patricius after becoming a priest.

The Irish take St. Patrick’s Day very seriously. It is a National Holiday in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

11) According to legend, leprechauns spent their days making and mending shoes. It’s hard work, so you can’t blame them for being territorial about their pots of gold.

New York City’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the world’s largest parades. Since 1762, 250,000 marchers have traipsed up Fifth Avenue on foot – the parade still doesn’t allow floats, cars, or other modern trappings.

12) “Erin go Bragh” what does the phrase mean? It is a corruption of the Irish Éirinn go Brãch, which means roughly: “Ireland Forever”

5)

Chicago has been turning the Chicago River green, every year since 1962, using 40 tons of dye every year.

6)

For most of the 20th century St. Patrick’s Day was strictly a religious

Hadada Ibis

Buried with ancient Egyptian mummies as gifts to their gods, these birds are still not very popular. Their loud distinctive call and the mess their droppings leave make them unwanted guests in most gardens.

just after the rainy season and the nesting cycle lasts between two and three months.

Did you know that the Hadada can help with your lawn? They are assiduous in extracting larvae of moths and beetles that feed on the roots of your grass. With a diet that includes earthworms, large insects like Parktown prawns, spiders, small lizards and snails – the Hadada’s presence in your garden might just be worth the occasional noise. This social bird can usually be found in pairs or in small groups of between five and thirty birds. They are large, measuring between 76 to 89cm and weight approximately 1.250Kg. They are grey to dark brown with metallic greenish purple shoulder patches and a long decurved bill. There is a distinctive white mark below the eye which is unique to this ibis species and has a red strip on the upper mandible. The males and females look the same. This species is predominately sedentary, during the day they are often found foraging on lawns while at night they roost in groups of up to a hundred birds – which can be very noisy. The same roosting site is often used year after year. During the day they will wander several kilometers away from the roosting site. These monogamous birds breed in solitary pairs. The breeding season peaks during or

Nesting material is gathered by the male which he then ritually presents to his mate. The nest is a basket-shaped platform that is built anything between one and twelve meters of the ground. The nest is lined with grass and lichen. Eggs and young often fall out of the flimsy nest. The nest site will usually be used year after year, but not always by the same breeding pair. Between one and six eggs are laid, they are light blue – greenish and are roughly the same size as average chicken eggs. Incubation is done by both parents and lasts approximately twenty eight days. The young are fed by both parents and will be independent at around forty days. Watching a breeding Hadada pair in the garden, they are very curious and if not disturbed will easily wander into an open door. They spend all their time foraging and from personal experience, I have observed them eagerly consuming dog pellets. Their need for food quickly makes them accustomed to your routines and habits and they will quickly become almost at ease with your presence. It’s sad that these beautiful birds are hunted and traded at traditional medicine markets in Nigeria. Source: www.birdsofeden.co.za / www. switchzoo.com / Wikipedia.org

Teddy Bear?

No Puppy! E

very girl dreams of having a live little teddy bear. The Teacup Pomeranian certainly is as close as you can get – but this little dog is not suitable as a child’s pet. Before you rush out and adopt one of these little creatures there are a few things to consider. Most importantly, these little dogs do not like being alone and will suffer from separation anxiety if left alone too often.

A Teacup Pomeranian will cost you between R3500.00 and R4000.00, but some breeders do charge a lot more. This is a compact dog with a short body. They possess a textured and abundant coat with plumed tail and ruffs of fur on its neck. The Teacup Pomeranian is always alert

Teacup Pomeranians are small Pomeranians or Toy-Poms as they are more commonly known. Fully grown a Teacup Pomeranian will weigh between 1.36 and 1.81kgs. Before you adopt a Teacup Pomeranian make sure you select a reputable breeder. There are some breeders that have questionable means of breeding Teacups that cannot be good for the dog’s health. The Teacup Pomeranian’s ancestors were the Wolfspitz or Spitz type dog from the Arctic region that was used as working sled dogs.

and aware of things around it. They can be lively, friendly and playful and sometimes they have a habit of excessive barking. Though small the Pomeranian has a long lifespan and can live for between 12 and 16 years – or longer with proper diet and exercise. This adorable little teddy bear is available in a variety of coat colours making it even more appealing, including sable, red, cream, black, brindle and white to name a few. Due to the Teacups diminutive size, they are not a good choice for young children. Accidently dropping or stepping on these little ones can easily result in broken bones or death. As a pet, the Teacup Pomeranian will capture your heart if you like your dog’s small, cute and cuddly. When it comes to caring for them, you just need to show your Pomeranian some attention and love.

“To an artist, art is the creation and not the end picture – for the viewer, it is the picture” I

nanda Page is a vibrant, dynamic and passionate artist who is inspired by light, shadow, sky and water and this is depicted in the many atmospheric sea, sky and landscape paintings. After studying theatre technology at the Pretoria Technicon, she worked as a commercial artist, décor painter and paint technique specialist. She worked on several large projects including Monte Casino, Restaurant Chains including work in Mauritius and many exclusive homes. However, in 2010 she packed up her scaffolding and décor paints and switched to stretched canvas and diligently taught herself to paint

primarily with oil paint. Canvas and oil paint mediums allowed Inanda to portray her soul and true feelings into visual wonders, which she felt difficult to be translated into words. Inanda spent a tremendous amount of effort on researching the art of painting. She spent weeks studying colours. She was so driven by colour and what it represents to her own soul. She studied and tested almost all philosophies and colour models available. She endlessly watched and learned from online art class videos by well-known respected international artists and art professors. It provided her with invaluable information methods, techniques and philosophies in the art of painting.

Teachers, Stefan Baumann and Myron Barnstone both inspired her specifically.

I asked Inanda what people want from art. She replied that this is not her objective in art. Instead she creates paintings An important aspect Inanda she feels communicate wants to share with both emotions and impressions and professional and amateur artists lets the painting speak to ‘them’. is, create each artwork as if it People complete the artworks will be the final work. “To share an emotion or experience is a compulsion. I am finding ways to share my memories of joy and intense reflection as nature presents” Every morning, after feeding her two young and lively Golden Retrievers, Inanda takes to her studio. She will choose a canvas, plot her composition and mix her colours. Armed with her palette knife and soft

brush she will work to her golden mean. Inanda likes to paint intuitively. After the first mark of the brush she will see where the painting leads her. Inanda compares painting to baking – you mix your ingredients but don’t always know how it’s going to turn out until the end when the last light has been captured. Inanda is now starting to explore new techniques and mediums. She found that epoxy resin and acrylic flow art an additional avenue in creating art and to express herself. She loves the detail and process and says it is mesmerising, calming and alive. “The creation of art is not the end product – it’s the process of creating which makes an artist and this is pretty awesome. It is the proof of hours spent in a studio, mixing, testing pigments and results” I asked Inanda if she is inspired by any other artists and she answered that she is inspired by every single artist that sits and creates a piece of art. What inspires her is true creativity. Inanda says that one must not wait for inspiration or think about what it is you want to create – just get to work, do what comes naturally. Creativity can never be forced. Her advice is – Don’t think about it – there are no rules. Sit and look at photos, what draws you in – is it people, nature, landscapes, seascapes – what draws you in will let you know what it is you are attracted to and to let your art follow your attraction.

Wild Peach

Kiggelaria Africana

If you would like to turn your garden into a wildlife haven, then this is the tree you need to plant. This magnificent, semi-deciduous tree grows to between 8 and 10 meters (while in perfect conditions they have been known to reach over 12 meters). They have light grey-green leaves and are ideal if you do not want your garden to appear too dark. The Wild Peach has male and female parts on separate trees. To attract birds to your garden you want a female tree – nursery staff can assist you with selecting the correct one. These female trees will attract a host of birds that feed on the orange-red seeds within the fruit casing. The Crown Hornbill, Olive Woodpecker, Cape Thrush, Cape Robin, Cape Whiteeye, Southern Boubou and Mousebirds all enjoy the colourful fruit.

Both male and female trees attract the Acraea Horta butterfly, which lays its eggs on the underside of the leaves. When the eggs hatch, an eruption of black caterpillars appears – DO NOT use pesticides on these. Caterpillars on this particular plant are a natural life-cycle for the tree and it will soon recover with a fresh set of leaves. The caterpillars will attract insect eating birds like to Cuckoo to your garden. This tree is well-shaped and reasonably robust. The low-branching Wild Peach has smooth, pale grey bark that becomes rough with age. The variable leaves may resemble those of the peach. The tiny, bell-shaped flowers, which bloom between August and January, are yellow-green. All in all this tree is an excellent choice for the smaller garden and a must for bird-lovers!

6 Conversations You should have with Your Partner BEFORE getting Married Written by the Marriage Expert – Stephen van Basten Are you 100% sure you love me and want to spend the rest of our lives together? Marriage is a commitment for life. It is a serious step which should not be taken lightly. Most people get married in their later twenties and we are living up 90 years and longer. If you think of how you have changed from when you were a baby to now around 30, Imagine how you will both change over the next 60 years. While there is no guarantee of future happiness, at least be very sure the answer to this is a resounding, “YES!” Are you realistic about marriage and do you know that our commitment will be tested? While you are courting and in the honeymoon stage, things are easy and congruent. It’s like the two of you have become one. This changes over time. Life happens. Humans make mistakes. Fortunes come and go. Parenthood adds pressure. You both meet new people and have different needs. You will have to forgive each other for lots of minor and some major transgressions. Is our marriage going to be a hierarchy or a partnership? Traditionally the husband is seen as the head of the house and the wife as the neck. This is a hierarchy and only works if the wife is 100% sub-servient and accepts this position. Personally I have

seldom seen this model work. Generally the wife builds resentment and a volcano results. I believe that the better model is where you are both equal partners in the marriage. This is a huge decision and will require a large amount of emotional intelligence. In this model you are equal. Everything is discussed and agreed. You both have the same rights, the same say. You both own equally expensive cars, have the same access to the money and your vote counts the same. No one can over-rule the other. Do you want children and if so, how many and how soon? I assure you that after you get married the question will change from, “When are you getting married?” to “When are you having your first kid?” It would seem that women have an intrinsic trigger to become moms and the older they get, the more urgent it becomes. I feel that men have a more romantic idea about parenthood but are not aware of the time and effort required to bring children up. This is an area of difference very often with couples I work with before marriage. I suggest you agree this one up front with very clear communication.

- 18 -

What is your vision for the future? Successful business usually have a very clear mission and vision statement with short, mid and long term goals to achieve them. Added to that, the management team are all committed. I believe that creating and sustaining a long lasting fulfilling marriage is the same. It is a choice rather than a mere outcome. Have a frank discussion about the future. Where would you like be 20 years from now? Where would you love to live? How do you both earn money? Where do the kids go to school? Where do you love to travel? What do you love to do most? What is your real passion, your meaning in life? How do we manage money, sex and power? The greatest cause of divorce is money. Not who makes it, but how we decide to spend it and who makes the decisions. There is nothing more demeaning than for one spouse to have to ask the other

spouse for money. There are actually 4 money personalities and your spouse will probably be different. Agree on a system that works for you. Sex is an important aspect of marriage. Do not underestimate this! Tell each other what you like, how you like it, how often you like it as well as what you don’t like and what will never happen! Agree up front how decisions will be made in the marriage, especially how you will manage the children. How will you make the big money decisions? How will you make the big family decisions? Who has the deciding vote? How do you break an impasse? For more information on this subject, go to: http://www.stephenvanbasten.co.za/ marriage_expert.html or download Stephen’s book on staying married at www.stephenvanbasten.co.za/author. html

ENVIRONMENTAL WASTE CRISIS:

LANDFILL SPACE DETERIORATING By Pieter Kruger, The Waste Group

W

aste disposal has entered into a huge crisis, not just in our Country, but more specifically in our City - City of Tshwane. Municipal Landfills are filling up and closing as they enter/reached the end of their lifespan. Currently there are three Municipal Landfills operating in the City of Tshwane, namely Onderstepoort, Soshanguve as well as Heatherley in Mamelodi. The first mentioned has probably got 5 to 6 months life span left and then has to close down and be rehabilitated. The only ones then left for municipal waste disposal, is Soshanguve and Mamelodi of which last mentioned predicts massive headaches for the Municipality as well as the residence of the City of Tshwane. Although Mamelodi is a large Landfill and still has quite a bit of life span left, the premises has become a huge health & safety risk for anyone entering. Apart from these three Municipal Landfills, there are two privately owned Landfills belonging to The Waste Group. One at their Head Office in Bon Accord (12 years left), in the northern region of Tshwane as well as Mooiplaats (80 years left), south of Rooihuiskraal in Centurion. These two Landfills are being used mostly for disposing of waste of their private clients as well as public disposing for example garden refuse, building

rubble and household waste. These two Landfills are enclosed and properly managed and maintained in terms of Regulations prescribed in the Waste Management Act. The waste disposal crisis in our City is actually facing a catastrophe. Running out of Landfill space only predicts one thing….increased costs to households and businesses, more littering as well as illegal dumping for instance and the end result is a very dirty and contaminated City. So what are the solutions? There are however various solutions to this waste crisis. Everybody is talking about recycling and has become very aware of the crisis we are facing. Recycling has become a buzz word for most of us but do we really understand why we should do this as well as how we need to do this? One could contribute towards the solutions by participating in Recycling Programs such as: • Curbside collections which is a recycling program that provides and facilitates a service to the households and businesses to split your waste into two groups. • To keep your wet waste, food scraps and heavy contaminated items

- 24 -

aside, still to be collected by the Municipality, aside from all your dry waste, all packaging, containers, tins and everything that are not contaminated by wet waste, which will be collected by a Recycling Company such as The Waste Group. • They will collect these in provided bags at a minimal yearly fee of R191.60 on specific days by allocated to your area, be transported to their Recycling Plant at Bon Accord and be sorted and baled and then sold off to Manufacturers which will recycle the items back to a process to produce an end product again.

Unfortunately we are still far from what is supposed to happen as to what is really happening. The bottom line is for you to start participating in some sort of recycling program as the prediction is that the Municipalities will eventually enforce everyone to participate in recycling and you will get charged for the service on top of your current waste disposal charges. Let’s act now and help Companies like The Waste Group to protect the environment and our recourses as well as managing and preserve our Landfills for a longer lasting life.

• There are also other ways to reduce waste to Landfill such as waste to energy plants, composting plants, etc. Why would this contribute? Firstly it contributes to the bigger picture by protecting and saving our environment and resources such as our trees, water, minerals and preventing further spreading air, soil and water pollution. Secondly we have to start implementing a mindset exercising a “zero to landfill” approach which will, in effect, mean by participating in recycling programs as explained above, will reduce waste to Landfills and eventually mean that our Landfills life span will be extended and reduce the risk of running out of space for disposing waste. The National Environmental Management: Waste Act no.59 of 2008 in conjunction with the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act of 2000, already provides for households and businesses to start separate waste at your premises. The Acts also provides that the Municipality will provide facilities to do such separations.

Maine Coon

T

he Maine Coon is a natural breed, and little is known about its origins. Hailing from Maine in New England, he was a popular mouser, a farm cat and most likely, ship’s cat. When the Cat Fanciers Association was formed in 1908, the fifth cat registered was a Maine Coon named Molly Bond. This is a large cat. A Maine Coon weighs between 4 and 8 kilogrames, with some eaily reaching over 9 kilogrames. They do not reach their full size until they are between three and five years old. The good-natured and affable Maine Coon adapts well to many lifestyles and personalities. He likes being with people and has the habit of following them around, but he isn’t needy. He’s happy to receive attention when you direct it his way, but if you’re busy he’s satisfied to just supervise your doings. Close a door on him and he will wait patiently for you to realize the error of your ways and let him in. He’s not typically a lap cat, but he does like to

be near you. He also retains his skill as a mouser. No rodents will be safe in a home where a Maine Coon resides. Even if you don’t have any mice for him to chase, he’ll keep his skills sharp by chasing toys and grabbing them with his big paws. A Maine Coon also enjoys playing fetch and will retrieve small balls, toys or wadded-up pieces of paper. He can climb as well as any cat but usually, prefers to stay on ground level. That’s where his work is, after all. He’s also very smart and will happily learn tricks or play with puzzle toys that challenge his brain. Maine Coons usually enjoy a kittenish love of play well into adulthood. Males, especially, are prone to silly behavior. Females are more dignified, but they aren’t above a good game of chase. Not especially vocal, they make any requests in a soft chirp or trill.

his month we look at one of the best kept secrets of the Bible, namely sonship. Jesus often refers to Himself as ‘Son of God’. But we can also be sons of God (Rom 8:19)! Before we start this discussion I need to clear up a few points: • Most translations substitute son with child. That is simply wrong! • Women can be sons just as men can be part of the bride of Christ. (Gal 3:28)

22:2 where He tells Abraham to sacrifice his only son. Now we know that Ishmael was also Abraham’s son. But not in God’s view and this is the point: God does not see every child as a son (or heir). Everything that happened to Abraham is a prototype of the gospel. We can demonstrate the same principle from the parable of the prodigal son. Jesus gives us a glimpse of the Father’s household; there are two sons but many servants. Note that they were all in the Father’s household so they were all ‘children of God’; but not all were sons.

• A son of God is an heir of God. (Gal 4:7)

In John 1:12 we read: but as many as did receive him to them he gave authority to • When Jesus speaks of Himself as ‘the become sons of God--to those believing in Son’ He makes us (as sons) part of the his name. (YLT) You see, when you receive principle that He is explaining. (This Jesus you get the authority to become a son however is my understanding.) of God; you are not automatically one. It is like receiving a ‘token’ like you sometimes • The flip side of a son is a servant or get from a shop. The token does not mean a slave. thing until you redeem it. It only becomes a A good place to start with sonship is to look vacuum cleaner when you redeem it. at the fact that God never saw every male child as a son (and definitely not every child But how do we redeem this token that we as an heir). This is demonstrated in Gen

received when we became children of God? I’m so glad you asked: Gal 4:4-5 But when the appropriate time had come, God sent out his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we may be adopted as sons with full rights. (NET) Here we find that word again; redeem. When you give up your obedience to the Law you redeem your token and God adopts you as a son with full rights. Why not a child, but a son with full rights? Because a son inherits! That is the principle. All God’s children will go to heaven (they are all part of His household), but only the sons inherit! That is why the NET also adds the ‘full rights’ part to emphasize this principle. Look at the following verse: Gal 4:7 so that thou art no more a servant, but a son, and if a son, also an heir of God through Christ. (YLT) You see, children are divided into sons and servants. Are there more texts to demonstrate this principle that the Old Covenant of Law disqualifies us from inheriting from God? Of course; an important principle like this cannot be established through a single verse: Rom 4:14 For if they become heirs by the law, faith is empty and the promise is nullified. (NET) Remember that an heir is a son. What Paul is saying is that the Lawabiding cannot be sons. In Gal 4:21-31 Paul makes an effort to show that those under the Old Covenant are not free – they are slaves. But the climax to this passage is found in verse 30 where he quotes Sarah when she expels her slave girl because she does not want Hagar’s son (Ishmael) to inherit with Isaac: Gal 4:30 But what does the scripture say? “Throw out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman will not share the inheritance with the son” of the free woman. (NET) Again Paul demonstrates the principle that those under the Old Covenant are not heirs or sons. Please read the passage a few times until you get the gist of it.

God does not see all His children as sons. Not all His children share in His inheritance; only the sons do. Compare the privileges of a son in your house with that of a servant and you will start to get the picture of why you want to be a son. And then I do not even talk about a slave who had virtually no privileges at all. This is an important principle that very few people know about but it is all over Scripture: Rom 8:19 For the creation eagerly waits for the revelation of the sons of God. (NET) It is also an important issue because the whole of creation is eagerly awaiting their revelation. When and what will we inherit? When does a person inherit? With the death of the testator. Now God is not dying any time soon! But He did die; on the cross! Then His testament kicked in – the New Testament. Now you also know why it is called the New Testament. In the parable of the prodigal son we read that the Father tells His son that ‘everything I own is yours’ and ‘you are always with me’ – he therefore inherits everything the father owns as well as the right to intimacy. What is excluded, health? No the Father owns that too. The fact that sons do not work for their inheritance (they are freed from the Law, remember?) fits in with grace like a glove where we as sons receive without having to earn! Next month we look more closely at the difference between a son, a servant and a slave.

Looking for Alaska by John Green

- 32 -

Everybody has a talent. Miles Halter’s is knowing the last words of a lot of different people—people like the author Rabelais, whose enigmatic last words “I go to seek a Great Perhaps” inspired the sixteen year-old to leave his family home in Florida and enrol in Culver Creek, a co-ed boarding school in Alabama. There he makes a new circle of friends: his roommate Chip, a scholarship student whom everyone calls “The Colonel;” Takumi, a slyly funny Japanese-American rapper; and sweet-spirited, Romanian-born Lara, who has trouble pronouncing the letter “i.” But most importantly he meets Alaska, a beautiful girl who “had eyes that predisposed you to supporting her every endeavour.” Miles quickly falls in love with this reckless, quirky, endlessly intriguing girl. An omnivorous reader, Alaska introduces him to a new set of last words — those of South American liberator Simón Bolivar — that pose an intriguing

question, “How will I ever get out of this labyrinth?” It’s a question that takes on a deeper, more poignant resonance when an unthinkable tragedy invites Miles to examine the meanings of life . . . and death.

This could be the Next Great John Green Movie! If you love The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns, then this is the 2017 movie for you. It is an adaptation of John Green’s popular young adult novel by the same name and it’s highly anticipated. Although there is not an official release date, the same team who worked on TFiOS is on board to work on this film, so it is bound to be another hit. The tale follows the love story between two teenagers, Miles and Alaska, and it is a must-read, so obviously it›ll be a must-see as well.
