September 2016

Editor’s Message Dear Readers, Welcome to the September issue of Community Ch@ magazine.

Remind your friends to subscribe at www.featzpublishing.com

I hope you all had a lovely August and have been taking advantage of the warmer weather we have been experiencing. The sunshine has been lovely and our garden is rewarding us with new buds visible everywhere. A sure sign that spring is finally in the air. August was a busy month with women’s day events and local elections being all we seem to talk about. The sad news of a local break-in and assault left us more aware of security and the safety risks we live with. However, September brings spring, and a general happier feeling and a lighter mood. I was shocked however when my daughter recently pointed out that we only have about three months left of this school year, and there is still so much to achieve. This month’s issue is again packed with interesting content and local business adverts. Make sure to support our advertisers and remember to let them know where you saw their ads. Have a look at our African Wings advertorial on page18 for a great holiday idea. I hope you will all have a colourful September and remember we are always keeping an eye out for new feel good stories. If you have one, please share it with us and we will try to publish it. I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Of all our garden birds my favourite has always been the Grey Lourie. Recently we spotted a few of the Speckled Mousebirds and being the inexperienced bird watcher that I am, I mistook these little guys for young Louries. The Speckled Mousebird is approximately 35cm long, with its tail making up half that length and weighs about 57 grams. It was clearly named for its dull mousy-brown overall colour on the back and head, including the prominent crest. The bill is black on the upper part and a pinkish colour on the lower part. The legs are also black. While the Mousebird might not be known as a songbird, they are very noisy 12

creatures, often warbling tsu-tsu calls while in flight, and their alarm call is a tisk-tisk sound. The Speckled Mousebird occurs from Cameroon East to Eritea and Ethiopia, South through Eastern Africa all the way to South Africa. They find most habitates suitable, except for rain forest and arid areas, while they seem to prefer open bushveld habitats. The Speckled Mousebird is a common “backyard bird. They are frugivores which subsist on fruits, berries, leaves, seeds and nectar. They are fairly strict in their choice from area to area.

In 1957 the South African Air force bought eight Avro Shackleton MK.3’s to perform the role of maritime patrol aircraft to patrol the South African coastline. They were numbered 1716 -1723. The Shackleton is powered by four Rolls-Royce Griffon liquid cooled V12 1960hp engines. These each power a contra-rotating propeller. Pelican 16-23 formed part of the SAAF’s 35 Squadron and for 27 years patrolled the sea-lanes around South Africa. They eventually retired in 1990 due to a combination of fatigue and lack of spares. 14

In 1994 a group of volunteers restored Pelican 16 to flying condition and departed South Africa on a trip to the UK to perform in a number of Airshows including Farnborough. Pelican 16 was the only Airworthy MK3 Shack left in the world. Unfortunately they were never to reach their destination. Flying over the Sahara desert on the night of July 13th, her no.4 engine began to overheat and they had to shut it down. A short while later a bolt failed on the propellers of the no.3 engine causing overheating. This left the Aircraft with no operational engines on its right wing!

With incredible skill and a whole lot of luck, the pilots performed a belly landing on the flat sand and slid to a stop. There were no major injuries to

The remains of Pelican 16 still lie in her final resting place in the desert and has been badly vandalized. The surviving crew members get together for a reunion every year on the 13th of July.

Covenantal Confusion Part 7

Last month we saw that the Law of Moses is dead. But how can it be dead since it is part of a covenant that God made with Israel? How do you get rid of a covenant?

to be under the Law! We took that burden on us out of ignorance. But this covenant that God made with Israel does not even exist anymore...

It is said that God is a covenantal God. That simply means that He cuts a covenant with us and then acts according to the terms of the covenant. The biggest gap in our knowledge about the gospel concerns the covenants of the Bible. When we do not understand covenants, we struggle to understand the gospel. There are two major covenants in the Bible:

The Israelites had a perfectly functioning covenant with God when they left Egypt (Exodus 2:24) – the covenant of Abraham. In the desert they frustrated God to such an extent that He gave them another covenant: the covenant of Moses (which Paul calls the ‘weak and beggarly system’). This was not a beneficial covenant because they had to deserve everything under it. It was completely conditional. God gave it to them in His wrath: Gal 3:19 Why then was the Law given? It was added because of transgressions, until the arrival of the descendant to whom the promise had been made. It was administered through angels by an intermediary. (NET)

1. The covenant of Abraham (Gen 15). 2. The covenant of Moses (with its Law) or Old Covenant (Exodus 24:8). Firstly we must realise that we (as gentile believers) were never included in the covenant of Moses! God made the covenant with Israel: Exod 34:27 The LORD said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel” (Also Exod 9:15, 31:16, 34:10). If we were not included in the covenant of Moses it means that we were never meant

16

Paul says four very important things here. Firstly, that the Old Covenant was given because of Israel’s transgressions. It was a curse! Secondly, Paul shows that it had an expiry date: it would remain in force until Jesus arrived. Thirdly, that God gave it through angels – as if He did not want

anything to do with it! And lastly; it was an additional covenant – it did not replace the covenant of Abraham (see verse 17). This was an extra covenant that was given to show that no one can please God through works. (See Isa 64:6.) Heb 8 shows that the Old Covenant was flawed and replaced by a New Covenant. Heb 8:7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, no one would have looked for a second one. 8 But showing its fault, God says to them, “Look, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will complete a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. (NET) Yes, the Old Covenant was flawed and God replaced it: Heb 8:13 When he speaks of a new covenant, he makes the first obsolete. (NET) Paul says that the Old Covenant with it Law has become OBSOLETE! Note also that Paul confirms what I said before: that the covenant was with Israel and Judah.

the covenant and on the same day He pays for it with His life! Luke 16:16 “The Law and the prophets were in force until John. (NET) Here Jesus says that the Old Covenant came to an end with John the Baptiser. He was the last prophet of the Old Covenant. So what’s the point of all this? Simply that the Law came with the covenant of Moses. Several times scripture states that the Old Covenant is broken, replaced with a better one. But even better – we were never part of this weak and flawed covenant. All of this frees us from the Law and as we saw last month, the Law is Satan’s weapon that he uses against us. The Old Covenant is dead. Forget about it.

We are sometimes stunned by the marked difference between the God of the Old and New Testaments. But it is the same God – the only difference is the covenant. But can God unilaterally annul a covenant? Under the covenant of Law He had to be hard on sinners. Under the New Covenant When one does that he has to pay with He is gracious toward sinners because his life. That’s how covenants work. In there is no Law! Zech 11:7-14 God says that He breaks the covenant that He had made with ‘all Next month we examine the New the people’: Zech 11:10 Then I took my Covenant which in contrast is totally staff “Pleasantness” and cut it in two to unconditional. Most people receive this annul my covenant that I had made with news with shock and disbelief, but when all the people. 11 So it was annulled that we read the passage in Heb 8:7-13 we very day... (NET) But there’s more to this notice that God repeatedly says (no less prophesy because God actually identifies than 7 times) ‘I will’ and not once ‘you the day on which He breaks the covenant: must’; and that is the spirit of our New Zech 11:12 Then I said to them, “If it seems Covenant – God does it all because we good to you, pay me my wages, but if cannot. not, forget it.” So they weighed out my payment – thirty pieces of silver. 13 The LORD then said to me, “Throw to the Write to me, engage me and I will try to potter that exorbitant sum at which they answer any questions that you might have. valued me!” So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter at the Johan Jordaan temple of the LORD. (NET) When were the Email: featzmags@gmail.com thirty pieces of silver given to the potter ‘in the temple of the Lord’? The very day Jesus died on the cross! So God breaks

The Cape Peninsula flight is 2 hours long and is spectacular while more urban with far more human habitation along the route. It is also very wind dependant as we fly along both sides of Table Mountain and if the wind is brisk it can cause some interesting turbulence. Getting ready for spring gardening The days are already getting warmer and keen gardeners are itching to get back to nature and plan their spring and summer garden. However, we are not quite done with winter yet. August is known as the “windy month and, even in early September we may still have a cold spell. Before we get started we must ensure that our standard plants and young trees are securely staked and tied with a soft material - pantyhose or raffia will do well- so as not to have them damaged by the wind. Make sure the ties are not too tight and check regularly during the growing season to prevent damage to the plant.

to dig it in. Established beds have a complex soil eco system which is best left undisturbed and nutrients added on top will work their way down into the soil. The winter flowers like primula, pansies and violas are still in full bloom for us to enjoy a while longer. We thus have time to decide what to plant next for a colourful summer display. Seedlings are getting quite expensive to buy, so this is a good time to sow seeds of petunias, snapdragon, lobelia etc. in trays. If looked after well and watered regularly, the seedlings should be healthy and strong when it is time to replace the

The Clivia is definitely the plant of the month and “king of spring. They are so easy to grow, love shade and use water sparingly. They grow well in pots and make a wonderful plant for balconies. Pelargonium (geraniums) come in gorgeous vibrant colours and does well at this time of the year. They flower best in full sun and withstand periods of hot dry weather and do not like to be overwatered. They also require very little fertiliser and their cheery flowers are produced over long periods. A delight for any garden!

The Doberman Pincher of Cats

The Russian Blue is a gentle, quiet, somewhat shy cat. He loves to play and is even fond of retrieving. This cat will often jump and climb onto high places where he is free to study people and situations before getting involved. Visitors won’t receive this cat’s attention unless he deems them worthy; often visitors to your house won’t even see your cat. However, towards family members and his favourite person- this cat is very loyal. He will follow you around the house and if allowed he will even ride on your shoulder. The Russian blue is a sensitive cat whose feelings are easily hurt if he does not receive the same amount of attention that he gives. A lack of attention will lead to the Russian Blue being anxious and fearful. He has a strong sense of self-worth and he does not like being made fun of.

This gorgeous blue cat was first introduced on the world stage in 1875, and since then they have been popular show cats as well as companions to those who know the secret of their sweet beauty.

STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE GRANT YOUR CHILD THE RIGHT TO BE PROTECTED FROM ABUSE CHILD PROTECTION WEEK was observed from 27 May to 2 June 2016. The purpose of the week is to annually raise awareness on the rights of children as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005. BUT, although the event is observed once a year, the protection of our children should never stop.

The Domestic Violence Roundtable (Sudbury- Wayland- Lincoln) studied the (still raising) concern of children being exposed to domestic violence, witnessing the abuse in their own homes. According to them “witnessing can mean SEEING actual incidents of physical/and or sexual abuse. It can mean HEARING threats or fighting noises from another room. Children may also OBSERVE the aftermath of physical abuse such as blood, bruises, tears, torn clothing, and broken items. Finally children may be AWARE of the tension in the home such as their mother’s fearfulness when the abuser’s car pulls into the driveway”.

Preventing and combatting crime against children is a priority for government. The African proverb: “It takes a village to raise a child” calls for a collective responsibility of communities to raise children, where “Your Child is My Child”. The Government Department believes that “All parents, guardians and older members of the community should look out for each other’s Children who are exposed to domestic violence at home become fearful and children”. anxious. in which one person uses intimidation and violence over the other person to get their way. Because children have a natural tendency to identify with strength, they may ally themselves with the abuser and lose respect for their seemingly helpless mother. Seeing their mothers treated with enormous disrespect, teaches children that they can disrespect women the way their fathers do”.

Children witnessing domestic violence’s emotional responses “may include fear, guilt, shame, sleep disturbances, sadness, depression, and anger at both the abuser for the violence and at the victim for being unable to prevent the violence.

Experts believe and research has confirmed that children who are raised in abusive homes learn that violence is “an effective way to resolve conflicts and problems”. Children may repeat the violence they witnessed as children in their future romantic and parental relationships. “Boys who witness their mothers’ abuse are more likely to batter their female partners as adults than boys raised in nonviolent homes. For girls, adolescence may result in the belief that threats and violence are the norm in relationships”.

“Physical responses may include stomach aches and/or headaches, bedwetting, and loss of ability to concentrate. Some children may also experience physical or sexual abuse or neglect. Others may be injured while trying to intervene on behalf of their mother or a sibling”. It is also shown that children from violent homes have “higher risks of alcohol/drug “The behavioural responses of children abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder, and who witness domestic violence may include juvenile delinquency.
