April is Autism Awareness Month
A
pril is generally seen as Autism Awareness Month, and while the 2nd of April is considered World Autism Awareness Day, we find that people often celebrate the difference of Autism throughout the month! Autism South Africa takes part in the campaign every year. And every year we have a different campaign to highlight the different, yet unique and often incredible aspects in autism spectrum disorder. This year, we asked our fans and followers to design a campaign and logo for Autism Awareness Month 2018. Our winner came up with a lovely design, and her slogan was Proudly Out of The Box. Autism is definitely Proudly out of the box. So many individuals on the spectrum are able to see things differently – they are able to think divergently and see solutions to problems that neurotypical individuals tend to miss. That being said, this does not mean that autism does not come with challenges. And, for many parents it is a tough road, from accepting the diagnosis to understanding not just the autism, but also their child. In South Africa, we try to raise awareness about the positive side of autism, to help parents realise that there is a light at the end of the tunnel – and through learning about autism,
we can often help these children reach their full potential. We also try to raise awareness about how important early intervention is for our children. There are countless studies that have stated, the earlier we can start intervention, the better the outcomes for the child. Another aim of ours, is to let people know that communication is not necessarily verbal – many people use different forms of communication every day. Verbal communication in autism is often tricky – both understanding it as well as expressing themselves. Autistic people need a form of communication that they can use functionally, and that they are comfortable using. This could be a sign language system, or it could be a voice output system, such as an iPad or similar device. So, our challenge to you during the month of April, is to start talking about autism – bring it out into the open, and lets start educating each other about the condition and make autism common knowledge in society.

We caught up with Desiree for a Q&A.

I became friends with Michelle Bekker who entered the pageant in 2016. That year she wasn’t selected as a finalist but decided to re-enter again in 2017. In 2017 she made it to the finals. She inspired me so much with her tenacity and personal growth over those two years. Nothing is more inspiring than a woman determined to rise. I just had to enter..

Why does the Date for Easter Change?
12
www.featzpublishing.com
W
hile the dates for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Halloween are fixed, Easter can fall anytime between March 22 and April 25.
The Easter holiday dates change each year, so it’s important to keep track, especially as careful diary planning can often secure you extra time away from the office. This year Easter takes place from Good Friday on the 30th of March until Family Day on the 2nd of April, making Easter Sunday fall on April 1st, which is also April Fool’s Day. The death of Jesus occurred around the Jewish Passover, which is traditionally held on the first full moon following the vernal equinox. As the full moon can vary in each time zone, the Church said that they would use the 14th day of the lunar month instead – the Paschal Full Moon – and host Easter Day on the following Sunday. Once the date of the moon is known, Easter Day can be determined. Christians celebrate Easter on a Sunday as it was the day Jesus rose from the dead, following being crucified on Friday two days before. Centuries ago in 325, it was determined by a council of Christian bishops that Easter Day would always be on a Sunday to commemorate the happy occasion. In Western Christianity, Easter Sunday must always fall on the next full moon after the Spring Equinox. Easter can fall as early as March and as late as April or May, depending on the year and the calendar used. Christians in the East who use the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar may have a different date. So the reason the date of Easter changes is because the full moon can fall on different days in different time zones.

his large, athletic dog is rather elegant looking and while he is not a commonly seen breed, his owners brag about his loyalty and guarding ability. “He is a loving companion, who brings nothing but laughter and joy.” That’s how he is described by his adoring humans. Looking at this handsome face, it’s easy to understand why you want to add a Giant Schnauzer to your family. There are however a few things you need to know about this dog before you rush out and adopt a fluffy little bundle of your own. The Giant Schnauzer is without a doubt an excellent guard dog and a loving family companion. They have a natural guarding and territorial instinct which make them wonderful canine companions. However, once you dig a little deeper you will discover that it takes a special kind of dog owner to raise this adorable dog. Giant Schnauzers are not outdoor dogs, they need to be a part of the family and live in your house with you. Looking at his size, this means that you will need the necessary space to accommodate him indoors. He can also be a little too rowdy for young children. In fact, some breeders will not sell a dog to families with children younger than 12. The Giant Schnauzer was developed as a working farm dog by cattlemen in Bavaria and he still retains his need to work. Giant Schnauzers love to have a job to do – so if he is going to be a part of your family you have to make sure you find him things to do. He can find things for you or even carry your groceries inside. Since the beginning of the 19th century, the Giant Schnauzer has been extensively used in German police work. He is a smart, trainable and loyal dog who is deeply attached to his family. But if you want a great dog, the key word is “teach”.
instinct, he will have to be socialised from a young age. You will have to teach him to differentiate between welcome visitors and everyone else. He is not a happy-golucky dog who will greet everyone with a wagging tail. This dog will destroy your house if he is bored and doesn’t get enough exercise, so before you add him to your family, make sure that you are happy to commit to an active lifestyle. Animal aggression is a common trait and cats and small dogs should be kept away. The Giant Schnauzer is best suited to one-pet homes. If you are looking for a large, athletic and elegant looking dog who plays hard and thrives on vigorous activity and if you are a confident and firm owner, then you will succeed with this breed. The Giant Schnauzer will reward your effort with his undying devotion. He will be sensitive to your moods and he will want to be physically close to you. With the Giant Schnauzer, more so than with other breeds, you will get out of them what you put in. They are very smart and can even be clownish. If silly behaviour gets him a laugh, he will pick up on it and soon he will become a show-boater. The Giant Schnauzer can be a brilliant family companion as long as you remember that he is not the fabled gentle giant – but a hard working energetic dog.
The Giant Schnauzer needs a lot of exercise and due to his natural guarding

Have we Forgotten the Real Meaning of Easter?
T
he real significance of Easter can easily become lost amid the piles of chocolate eggs, do you know what it’s all about? Take your eyes off those tempting boxes of chocolate eggs for a moment, there’s a deeper meaning to Easter than munching on a calorific overload of confectionery. These days many people have lost sight of the true meaning of this annual festival. Easter is the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ three days after his death on the cross. Easter day – when the Resurrection took place – always occurs on a Sunday and is the oldest Christian Holiday and the most important day in the Christian calendar.
Easter is a movable feast, meaning a Christan festival whose date changes each year. See page 13 for an explanation about why the date changes. Once it’s date is fixed in
any given year, Easter then affects the dates of more than twenty other Christian events that are paced around it – including Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Ascension Day, Pentecost, Whit Monday and All Saints Day. While Western Christianity bases Easter on the Gregorian calendar, the Eastern Orthodox churches – largely embracing those in or from Greece, Russia, Eastern Europe and the Middle East – use the earlier Julian Calendar. So they can have a different date for Easter. The Western and Eastern dates for Easter are the same approximately every four years. So that’s the religious background, but for those who don’t observe the Christian meaning, it tends to be about meeting up with relatives for giving and receiving chocolate eggs these days.

Add Another Dimension to Your Garden with a Cape Beech
T
he Cape Beech is cultivated as an elegant, decorative tree in large gardens and is used as a windbreaker or screening tree where privacy is needed. This beautiful indigenous tree will add another dimension to your garden. A large, graceful evergreen with a dense spreading crown. The bark is smooth and grey-white becoming darker and more fissured with age. The Cape Beech is frost hardy and has low watering needs. This tree can grow to a height of 6 – 18m with a spread of 3 – 6m.
or endangered and this is attributed to its wide distribution throughout Southern Africa. From the Southern Cape to Zambia and the east coast to the tropics. The Cape Beech is found along damp areas of mountains and coastal forests or swamps and bush clumps. The Cape Beech does well in coastal areas where winds are strong. The wood is hard and used for making furniture and violins. The Xhosa name: “isiQwane sehlatic” means Protea of the Forest
The Cape Beech is easily recognised by its leathery, dark green leaves, tinged with purple-red. The hairless leaves are dull green on top and a paler green underneath. Young leaves often appear bright pinkish red with a purplish leaf stalk. Small whitish or creamy yellow flowers appear from June to December. The berries are thinly fleshed and spherical in shape – green when young and purple when mature. It is not uncommon to find flowers and berries on the tree at the same time. The berries start appearing three months after the flowers. Birds, bees and small mammals find the flowers and berries irresistible and the manybranched crown provides excellent nesting sites for birds. The Cape Beech is not threatened Community Ch@ - April 2018

Exercise trends:
I
What’s Fad and What’s Fab?
t seems like every day brings with it a new exercise or diet trend. While it’s great that fitness and health has become so popular, it does pose the problem of differentiating between what’s a load of bull and what’s actually worth incorporating into your regime. To help, I’ve listed some trends and given some information about their merits and downsides. 1. Juice cleanses
Probably the most popular thing to come out of the #healthy trend, juicing has both pros and cons. While it’s great to get in some extra nutrition in the form of a highly concentrated (and convenient) juice, it can be detrimental and even dangerous when done incorrectly. A common mistake that people make is adding too much fruit and not enough vegetables. What this does is push up the sugar content and create a calorie bomb. This is not ideal when you’re trying to reduce your sugar intake and watch your weight. Juicing also removes a very important part of the vegetables/fruit: fibre. Fibre helps our digestive systems to function effectively. This is why it’s important to combine juices with whole foods rich in fibre. To get the most out of your juice, add as many leafy greens as you can and as little fruit as possible. Also make sure you use it in conjunction with a healthy diet. 2. Detox/skinny teas First off, let’s be clear: tea is awesome. Normal tea, herbal tea, rooibos tea…they’re all brilliant ways to keep hydrated and warm without
26
by Chanel Serfontein
consuming a truckload of calories (provided you don’t load them up with sugar). However, believing that you’ll lose an astronomical amount of weight simply by adding a super expensive tea to your diet will lead to disappointment. While tea has been proven to help lower your risk of stroke and heart disease, lower your blood pressure, increase mood and mental performance and improve energy levels, it is not a miracle weight loss aid. In order to keep a healthy body, you need to clean up your diet, exercise, and top it off with a cup of tea. 3. HIIT training This one gets a big YES. High Intensity Interval Training (or HIIT training), is defined by intense bouts of exercise punctuated by short rests. This method of training allows you to rev your metabolism, complete an effective workout in less time, torch calories and keep burning them long after you finish your session. 4. Lifting heavy Long gone are the days women were told to avoid heavy weights for fear of “bulking up”. It has since been proven that strength training with heavy weights is not only NOT going to turn you into she-hulk, but will in fact have a very positive effect on your physique. This is because it effectively overloads your muscles, which has three main advantages: • Muscle burns energy more effectively than fat does, which means that you’ll burn more calories at rest and store less as fat. • It improves strength and will aid you in day to day activities.
www.featzpublishing.com
• Strong muscles look good! Hello definition and tone. 5. Waist trainers Touted by celebrities such as the Kardashians, waist training has become a positively booming market. The practice (which involves wearing a corset-like brace around your middle for the majority of the day and night) has received much popularity-but very little evidence as to its effectiveness. In fact, there is alarming evidence that this practice is actually dangerous: it compresses your organs, can cause heartburn, restricts your breathing and has been reported to cause deformed spines and ribcages. While wearing a waist trainer may squeeze your waist into a smaller size while you are wearing it, there is no evidence that it has lasting benefits. You would be better off eating properly, exercising and training your core. 6. #healthy Instagram Have a look at your Instagram (or any other social media feed), and you’ll likely be inundated by fitness, health and weight loss posts. A new form of celebrity has been born-the super fit, the trainers and the diet gurus. With social media stars like Kayla Itsines garnering a following of more than 7 million people, it’s easy to imagine the constant “fitspiration” is having a major effect on how people live their lives. This influence can go one of two ways: • Insecurities can be born. When you’re constantly seeing pictures of svelte, tanned beauties; it’s difficult to keep
from comparing yourself to them. With the amount of pressure being put on young women to look perfect, an Instagram page full of toned legs and ripped abs can quickly cause problems such as eating disorders, insecurity, over-exercising, etc. It’s so important to remember that every single body is built differently, and is beautiful in a unique way. It’s also important to remember that you’re seeing the highlight reel-only the best of the best photos make it to Instagram in most cases. This means professional lighting, angles, photography, editing, etc. • It can up your motivation and inspiration and make you feel like part of a community. You’ll realize that everyone has off days, everyone has to put in work; and surrounding yourself with like-minded people can help you get through dips and tough workouts. There are also a lot of great workouts being posted and even useful tutorials regarding correct technique. What it boils down to is making sure you follow genuine, knowledgeable, positive role models; and staying away from comparisons and bitterness. Fitness trends will always come and go. Generally, it’s fine to try things out and see what works for you. Just make sure you do your research and trust the opinions of people that have sound knowledge and/or accreditations.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About the African Harrier Hawk Kaalwangvalk
This month, our bird of choice is the African Harrier Hawk, and instead of going through all the usual facts and figures about this breed, we thought we would just highlight five interesting facts that you might not know. 1. The African Harrier Hawk grows up to 65cm long and they have a wingspan of 160cm. 2. This bird is an excellent hunter, but did you know that they have doublejointed legs? Their double-jointed legs and sharp talons help them climb trees and reach into cavities to find their prey. Their prey includes: small mammals, birds, eggs, insects and lizards but they also eat palm nuts. 3. They have no face feathers (therefore their Afrikaans name: Kaalwangvalk). This is helpful when sticking their beaks into small areas to catch prey. It also enables them to blush during their mating display. 4. During breeding time, they will lay 1 to 3 eggs in a large nest made of sticks that they build on a cliff or in a tree. The male and female incubate the eggs. Very often, only the oldest chick survives. 5. The African Harrier Hawk lives in forests and savannah areas of subSaharan Africa and is quite common throughout their range.

GRACE Part 26
You are Becoming Holy By: Johan Jordaan
T
his month we look at the process of becoming holy. Yes, you are already holy but you are also becoming holy! If that sounds a bit confusing, bear with me. The Process of Sanctification: Rom 6:22 But now, freed from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit leading to sanctification, and the end is eternal life. (NET) Our benefit, now that we are bound to God, leads to sanctification – the process by which we become holy. Our spirits are already holy but our souls and bodies are still on a road to holiness. 1Thess 4:3 For this is God’s will: that you become holy, that you keep away from sexual immorality. (NET) You become holy. How that happens we will see just now. Heb 10:14 For by one offering he has perfected for all time those who are made holy. (NET) Now this is an amazing statement about our sanctification; it both tells us that we are holy (He has perfected us for all time – our spirit) and that we are on the road to holiness (those who are made holy – soul and body). We are in a process of sanctification, we who are holy! Here Paul beautifully (if we assume that he wrote Hebrews) summarises everything that I tried to explain so far. But he goes one further; he
34
shows us that this process is not driven by us! He makes the statement that God has made us perfect (the spirit-man) and is doing the rest (sanctification of body and soul) as well! It is not our work to be sanctified. When we assume the role of the ‘sanctifier’ of our own lives, we end up disillusioned, sin-conscious and stressed out. It is not an easy job. In fact it is impossible. The truth of the matter is that only God can do it. What follows are several texts that show us that our sanctification is a process and that God Himself drives that process. Let’s have a look at some of these texts: Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. (NET) Paul tells us that we are to ‘be’ transformed, not that we ourselves should transform our minds (souls). It is not our job. But who will do this for us? Who drives this process? 1Cor 1:30 He is the reason you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. (NET) Here Paul lets the secret out: it is Jesus – He is our sanctification. It is not me and you – it is God Himself.
www.featzpublishing.com
1Cor 6:11 Some of you once lived this way. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (NET) Now Paul clearly points out that the Holy Spirit is the one who does the work in Jesus’ name. He sanctifies us. It is His work. And He does it in the name of Jesus.
Phil 1:6 For I am sure of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. (NET) This is the ultimate, so I kept it for last. Paul says that he is sure of this and therefore we can be too: God, who started this good work (of sanctification) in us, will see it through until Jesus comes again.
2Cor 3:18 And we all, with unveiled faces reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, which is from the Lord, who is the Spirit. (NET) In this very special passage of scripture, Paul again explains the process of sanctification: we are being transformed into the image of Jesus and the one who does it is the Holy Spirit. This happens when we look at Jesus’ glory. We then presumably receive the same glory (eventually). This is the process described to us – look at the glory of Jesus and be transformed into the same glory. In other words, keep your eyes fixed on Him.
This is great news: we are already holy and that which is not holy yet, is being made holy by the Holy Spirit in conjunction with the Father and Jesus.
Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives just as Christ loved the congregation and gave himself for her 26 to sanctify her by cleansing her with the washing of the water by the word, 27 so that he may present the congregation to himself as glorious – not having a stain or wrinkle, or any such blemish, but holy and blameless. (NET) Again Paul shows us that Jesus is responsible for His bride. He will see to it that when He comes for her, she is perfect. He does it, not the bride. Look at this passage: He may present the congregation to Himself as glorious. That’s right – He presents the congregation to Himself, glorious and without a single spot. That is grace – God does it, we simply receive it! 1Thess 5:23 Now may the God of peace himself make you completely holy and may your spirit and soul and body be kept entirely blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (NET) I could not have put it better myself: God Himself makes you completely holy in spirit, soul and body.
This is such a liberating truth! You are not responsible for your own holiness – the Holy Spirit takes responsibility for this as well. All that we have to do is to not fight this process. Simply yield to the Spirit. He does the rest. Is the New Covenant good or what? Compare this to the Old Covenant where you were responsible for your own holiness. God is good – all the time.

containers, keep them in morning sun and afternoon shade. ● Plant all spring-flowering bulbs with the pointed side up (except anemones, which should be planted with the pointed side down). Bulbs with fingers or claws, like ranunculi, should be planted with the fingers pointing downwards. Small bulbs like anemone, leucojum, muscari, lachenalia, tritonia and ranunculus should be planted 5cm deep, and larger ones like hyacinth, freesia, and Dutch iris should be planted 10cm deep. Use a dibber (a tool to make holes in the soil) or bulb planter to do the job. ● Keeping the soil moist at root level is the most important aspect of growing bulbs. Soak the soil to a depth of about 15cm every four to five days. ● Potted bulbs will need more regular watering – even every day if dry. Never allow the base of the pots to stand in water.
Roses in April - fill in the gaps As roses are deciduous, their bottom leaves will soon turn brown and start dropping off. Planting cool-season annuals in front of them will screen the bare stems at the base of the bush. Choose sun lovers like alyssum, calendulas, dwarf snapdragons, lobelias, Namaqualand daisies, phlox and pansies.
For more information on bringing Life to your Garden, visit our website www.lifeisagarden.co.za or join the conversation on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ lifeisagardensa.
Remember to: Toss some waterblommetjie bulbs into your pond - they will grow well in water between 10-60cm deep, and will soon settle into the mud sediment at the bottom of the pond, giving you a tasty flower harvest in late winter and spring.
Grow your own garlic You can buy garlic bulb sets from nurseries. Pick a sunny spot with well-draining soil and plant the cloves about 15cm apart in drills of about 7cm deep. The clove’s noses should just be covered with a thin layer of soil. Water regularly. You can also plant garlic in containers.

She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. In 1935, Earhart became a visiting faculty member at Purdue University as an advisor to aeronautical engineering and a career counselor to women students. Fascination with her life, career and disappearance continues to this day. In Long Beach, on December 28, 1920, Earhart and her father visited an airfield where she was given a ride that would forever change Earhart’s life. “By the time I had got two or three hundred feet off the ground,” she said, “I knew I had to fly.” After that 10-minute flight (which cost her father $10), she was immediately determined to learn to fly. Working at a variety of jobs including photographer, truck driver, and stenographer at the local telephone company, she managed to save $1,000 for flying lessons.

Do you want a Cat that will walk on a Leash?
Then the Ocicat is the cat for you. You are not going dotty when you see an Ocicat. You are indeed seeing a small spotted cat, but he’s not wild. Far from it. The Ocicat was created through crosses between Siamese, Abyssinian and American Shorthair cats. He might be named after the ocelot, a small American wild felid, but he’s all domestic cat. The Ocicat is one of those happy accidents that sometimes occur in cat breeding. The devoted and playful Ocicat loves people and will trail their footsteps through the house or ride on a shoulder. Guests are welcomed by this generally social cat as new opportunities for petting or lap sitting. Ocicats don’t even mind being carried around as long as they are with you. As with any animal, they come in a range of personalities, so some are shyer than others. Favourite activities include retrieving toys and learning to walk on a leash. Ocicats are highly intelligent and learn tricks easily. Puzzle toys are a good way to keep them occupied and entertained. Carefully put away anything you don’t want him to have. He is perfectly capable of figuring out how to open doors or undo latches. His Siamese ancestors bequeathed the Ocicat a tendency to be vocal, but he is not as loud or as demanding. He is sensitive
and will respond to nothing more than a verbal correction. Although the Ocicat is adaptable, he doesn’t like being left alone. Be sure he has another cat or dog as a companion if you aren’t at home during the day. The Ocicat stands out for his spotted coat, which gives him the look of a small wildcat. The short, smooth, satiny coat come in twelve colours, all of which feature dark thumbprintshaped spots on a light background. The Ocicat has a medium-size to large body. He is muscular yet graceful. Large ears corner the modified wedge-shaped head. Some Ocicats have tufts of fur that extend vertically from the tips of the ears. Large almond-shaped eyes angle slightly upward and can be any colour except blue. The lengthy tail has a dark tip. This gentle, playful cat is well suited to life with families with children and cat-friendly dogs. He can learn tricks, enjoys interactive toys and loves the attention he receives from children who treat him politely and with respect.

Kids Activity
Get creative in the garden with a teepee trellis You are never too young to develop your green thumb with a spot of gardening. Inspire your kids to get into the garden this Easter, and start growing their own plants with this nifty teepee trellis project. This project is a great after-school activity for you and your child and can be used to grow a variety of vines, such as the Mandevilla seedlings featured in this activity. The teepee trellis can also be used to grow a number of edible plants, such as runner beans, peas, and tomatoes, depending on the time of the year. Encouraging your children to grow their own vegetables is a fantastic way to teach them about living off the land. They can watch their food grow from a seedling and end up on their plate. What you will need: - Some dowelling rods - Some string - Mandevilla seedlings - Cable ties - Scissors - A spade - A rake - Some bonemeal, a handful of fertiliser and half a bag of compost, in a Trug or wheelbarrow
Let’s get started: The day before: Step 1: The first step is to prepare the soil for planting and this needs to be done the day before the activity. Choose a nice big area where you and your child can plant the Mandevilla seedlings and get it ready together, by aerating the soil and adding compost, fertiliser, and bonemeal. Finish off by raking the soil level and watering it well.

On the day: Step 2: To begin the activity you’ll need to make a teepee trellis in the area that you and your child prepared for planting the day before. Help your little one arrange the dowelling rods into a teepee shape and get them to hold it in place while you tie them together with string. Step 3: With the teepee in place, your child can then dig holes just in front of each dowel, providing enough space for the Mandevilla seedlings. Get your kiddie to plant the Mandevillas in the holes, alternating the white and pink flowers. Step 4: Once all the seedlings have been planted, you’ll need to attach each plant’s stem to its dowel with a cable tie. This might be a bit tricky for your child, so give them a hand with this part. They can water the planted Mandevilla thoroughly after they have all been cable-tied. Step 5: The easiest step - watch it grow into gorgeous colour!
