From the Editor We are really excited to launch the first issue of @LynnwodGlen magazine and we would like to thank all our contributors and advertisers, as well as Gavin Billson, for the faith and support for this new venture. Starting something new is always a challenge, as I am sure the first young girl who wanted to honor her father with a holiday discovered. Sonora Smart Dodd, who was being raised by her single dad, William Jackson Smart, a war veteran and single father of six, had her hands full convincing the church that Father’s deserved a day to be honored too. A good argument and endless love for her father saw her finally succeed, on the 19th of June 1910 the first sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city of Spokane, Washington. Father’s Day is still celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June and this year it will be the 21st June. You do not need to fight for a holiday for your dad, but make sure you honor him in a way that would show how much you appreciate who he is and all he does for you. Remember to send us your thoughts and suggestions (featzmags@gmail.com) before our next issue deadline on the 13th of July 2015 Until next time
The Editor This is your magazine and we would like to hear from you - if you have any comments or suggestions; please email us at: featzmags@gmail.com with @LynnwoodGlen in the subject line. We welcome any feel good community stories; share your good news and see it published in the next issue.
The Chairman’s Report
LynnGlen CrimeStop (LGCS) was formed in 2005 with a small committee meeting at St Albans College. The objectives of LGCS was to make the area more secure by means of: • Patrolling with a security company. • Patrolling using volunteers within the community. A new committee was formed in 2011 and saw the implementation of the following: • A radio network for those members that joined and bought a handset, accessible to security breaches within the area as well as the opportunity to call our patrol vehicle, should the need arise. • A dedicated control room. • The introduction of Zambli, a new armed response company was also implemented and remain our preferred armed response security company. They provide two services to our community: • Patrolling our neighbourhood. • Armed response if you have an alarm system linked to them. To date we feel that our objectives are being met due to the very low security breaches experienced since implementing this initiative. We would like to thank all those who have been part of this initiative and encourage new members to join so that we can continue to provide this service and reduce rates. LGCS Membership: As crime is never completely eradicated, we appeal to households to join LGCS to enhance the preventive action and effect reduced membership fees for everyone. The existing members also find it unfair to carry those nonmembers expecting a preventive service.
Zambli Armed Response: The contractedZambli AR unit is doing a sterling job in our area at a very competitive rate, which together with LGCS membership is less than other armed response units alone. Effective Zambli response is made possible due to the full time resident response presence of Zambli in our area. We urge all LGCS members and non members to consider moving your armed response service to Zambli as with enough membership, we will be able to secure a second vehicle to our area. Radio Network: LGCS has an extensive radio network supported by its members which enable them to keep in 24/7 contact with our armed response and support personnel. It serves as early warning and reporting mechanism to all participants and have proved to be extremely effective in the fight against crime in our neighbourhood. Feel free to contact LGCS to discuss the advantages and procedures of joining. Access Control: In the last two years LGCS has established an alliance with the St Albans College and Varsity College on a joint venture to upgrade security especially for the above educational institutions which are considered strategic security centers. To this end access control to the area has been initiated the last year including a full traffic impact study which was completed. Request: An urgent appeal to residents not already signed up is made to continue with Access Control which all residents have voiced approval/ support.

Access Control Property Type Residence Business Complex Total Target
We started In August 2014 with the task of gathering 70% of the required signatures in order to commence the access control process. Why are we doing this? • Improve our Safety and Security • Increase your property value • Possibly reduce household insurance premium • Allow us to collectively bargain for cost • Deliver effective reaction unit response (Vehicle patrol area already) • Improve our sense of community
We have to date obtained the following support for going ahead with this initiative:
# 207 3 77 287 201
Signed 111 2 10 123 123
% 54% 67% 13% 43% 61.2%
We need to obtain a total of 201 signatures in order to reach the required 70%. We have to date been successful in obtaining a total of 123 signatures, this from a potential 287 signatures. This means we need another 78 signatures which will enable us to proceed with the actual preparation of the application for access control to be submitted to the City of Tshwane. How can you help? Please motivate your neighbours and friends to participate in this important project. You can contact us @ information.lgec@gmail.com if you need more information. Please inform us if you are willing and able to obtain the additional support to proceed with this initiative. Any assistance will be appreciated! Start taking responsibility of your own safety and avoid becoming an easy crime targeted area.

Medical Moments from the Cookie Jar: Dr Joji Theron (MBChB, MSc) uring an impromptu late Saturday gathering of friends, each stretched to the limit of modern living, a pizza with too much chilli was inadvertently ordered. Said pizza could not be returned as it was, indeed, to menu specifications. The evening threatened to continue the helpless, out-of-control, just another thing gone wrong theme of the week. Digging deep to recollect pre-graduate physiology, the doctor came up with ‘just eat the pizza, grab the tissues and ‘’love that endorphin rush”. And truly, 15 minute later, noses and eyes streaming, we were laughing with momentarily no cares in the world.
D
So what are those lovely heady chemicals which make us feel like we have had a holiday, happy and as good as ‘James Brown’? And more importantly, how do we organise supply of these substances on demand? Endorphins, a subset of enkephalins, are produced mainly in your brain, and are structurally related to morphine. They can be classed as natural painkillers and elicit feelings close to euphoria. Serotonin is another cerebral neurotransmitter that is responsible for feeling good, body’s answer to the blues. For the second part of the question, we can all quote verbatim the sound and sage advice of healthcare practitioners: eat healthy food, get enough sleep, reduce stress and exercise (indeed, the runner’s high is all about endorphins). All true, but in this day and age, one needs to feel better to have the energy to even begin to attempt the above. So what are the cheats? Well, although most aspects lack the unequivocal nod of the rigid scientific coterie, one may be given some evidential leeway to a few suggestions (but remember moderation). For one, eat chillies and stimulate your capsaicin
Getting Happy for a Sixpence receptors (something like no-pain, no gain). And who is going to argue with advice such as ‘melting dark chocolate in your mouth’. After your yoga or group exercise, add a good session of chin wagging (bonding for the boys), smile a genuine smile, and do an unexpected good turn. And best of all, fall in love, stay in love and make love (often). Breathe deeply. Stretch those muscles (yes, come on, get off that chair right now), find something to admire and appreciate in each day. Laugh as much as you can. And garden. Researchers have recently linked bacteria in the soil with increased serotonin production. Apart from getting your dose of natural antidepressant, it may also stimulate your immune system as a bonus. Link that with some sunshine and the outdoors – and it’s hard to be glum. Push your boundaries a bit. Challenge yourself by facing and overcoming a fear head on: something like skydiving perhaps, or less dramatically, make a public speech! Dare to be you. This, the jovial discussion of tired laughing friends around fiery hot pizza. Although, having said that, I cannot entirely discount the effect of the cocktails! Security Feedback Incidents in our Area of interest:
C
riminal related incidents in the LGCS area, over the period Jan’15 to mid - Apr’15, were kept at bay within reason, due to the joint Zambli and Neighbourhood Watch patrols as well as other effective counter measures employed in our area of responsibility. The most common of the recorded incidents which were reported, were break-ins (Four reported), attempted break-ins (Four reported) and suspicious movement (Three reported). The general tendency for the first two activities remain early morning and evenings - which is hidden amongst other friendly and routine movement while suspicious movement is mostly a daytime action - done with a very innocent approach for reconnaissance purposes.
W
It takes a school with vison to prepare a young man for life St Alban’s College is a young, vibrant Anglican boys’ school, with Grades 8 to 12. It came into existence on 1 February 1963 with a total of 37 boys and a complement of 3 masters. We now number over 560 boys and over 60 teachers, plus an array of support staff. From its very inception it has been a school that loves a challenge. The founder-Headmaster, Anton Murray, was a South African cricketer who sought to maintain the best traditions of liberal education. So an emphasis on well-rounded development prevails, and games such as cricket, rugby and hockey have always figured prominently in our history. Our history of embracing diversity and making a difference in the broader community is also well established. Now 52 years old, St Alban’s College is established and secure but never complacent. For more information and frequently asked questions please visit our website at

e need to take serious note of these trends and be careful about our comings and goings in the early mornings and evenings. Alter your routines as much as you can. Also warn your domestics about the reconnaissance efforts during the day time, as well as the “innocent questions” and cunning ways utilized by the criminals to obtain information and to gain entrance to your property.
Security Suggestions: A very small but important contribution you can make to the security of our neighbourhood is to report your faulty streetlights to the City Council. A well-lit area is avoided by criminals and aids our patrollers who are endeavouring to keep us all safe. This needs to be done on a regular basis to: Telephone Numbers: 080-1111556 or 012-3589999. E-mail: streetlights@tshwane.gov.za Please provide the following: Physical address. Street corner nearest to the Faulty Street light. Street light pole number. Details/nature of the problem. Contact details of the caller.

ou must be aware of our residential patrol service known as GAP (Guard Assist Programme) as mentioned in the overview. The GAP patrolling supplements the ZAMBLI Patrol Service also referred to elsewhere. he Zambli Patrol Service together with GAP are effective in keeping the criminal industry at bay is without a shadow of doubt a fact. The key challenge however, is that at present we only have 33 volunteers participating in this programme. As some of these volunteers are husband and wife patrolling together we only have 25 vehicles that we can allocate in a GAP roster. Following a photograph of such a vehicle:
T
C
urrently we allocate a vehicle to do only 2 (two) hours per 3 (three) week cycle. The LGCS Committee is very well aware on all the demands being put on your time be it the economic reality of the day, family time etc. But 2 hours per 3 week cycle is in our opinion not unreasonable especially in context of the making our area safer. We also offer the following service to new GAP patrollers: • Brief orientation of the do’s and don’ts; • You choose your own patrol time that will best fit your schedule; • We accommodate your work schedule, leave etc. • This programme has been designed in close cooperation with SAPS and it carries their full support.
I
n conclusion, please consider joining this programme, it is without fear of any counter argument the right thing to do. Collectively we can claim our streets back where our children can play, run and cycle etc. and you and I can walk our dogs.
My kind toon geen respek vir my nie Anita Sinosich
n Mens hoor so dikwels n gesprek tussen twee vriendinne wat so lui: Ella se seun is so ongeskik met haar. As dit my kind was….” Ouers is rolmodelle.
Hul kreatiwiteit sal jou verbaas.

s! r e n n i W Building Blocks for Good Parenting Kinders leer ook in die proses uit hul eie foute. Ek is superieur.” Ten slotte.

Environmental
There is a Native American proverb that says:
“We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children.” So ask yourself, what would you like to leave behind for your children? If you were told that you can make a difference to our environment in 21 days, would you resist? Research shows that it takes a human on average 21 days to develop a new habit... Who would have thought? Only twentyone days. Spend twenty-one days reminding yourself to turn off the light, and you could develop a new habit that could have a lifelong effect on the environment. Your every action affects our planet, but you decide if your actions will be positive. Naturally we all want to do our bit, but it’s a daunting task and the threat of expense makes us a little less enthusiastic. In reality, it is easier to make a difference than you might think.
Re-use your plastic bags when you go shopping – remember you are paying for them. Instead of buying bottled water – fill your own bottle with water from home – buying a quality water bottle is cheaper than buying water Recycle – this one might take a little longer than 21 days Do your laundry in cold water – this too will save you money Take shorter showers – water is not a renewable resource – use it sparingly Switch off lights you are not using – we are all security conscious, but do all the lights in your garden need to burn all night? Teach your children the importance of living green; try rewarding them for doing their bit.
We all have a responsibility to take care of this beautiful planet, and if each one of us makes a conscious effort to make just a small difference, our future generations will be able to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us.
As a final idea, while we all hate load shedding, try turning off everything in your house for an hour twice a month, and see the impact that has on your electric bill. Turn it into a romantic candle light dinner, your significant other will love the attention.
Here are some green habits for you to try. Remember, after 21 days it will come naturally and then you can move on to the next one.
You do not have to turn your world upside down to make a difference; just remember that every bit helps.
TOO UGLY FOR LOVE? Body dysmorphic disorder Antonia Roos Humans are visual beings and, in today’s world, much emphasis is placed on the way one looks. Indeed, few would deny a desire to have some aspect of their appearance altered. However, imagine looking in the mirror to discover a reflection so repulsive that the mere thought of leaving the house is frightening, and suicide seems to be the only escape. This is the morbid reality for many individuals who suffer from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), a condition where the affected person feels deformed or hideously ugly, yet appears normal to everyone else. BDD is a somatoform disorder characterised by a preoccupation with a slight or imagined defect in one’s appearance, leading to clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning. A number of theories have been used to explain the causes of the disorder. Some emphasise the role of genetics, neurochemistry and brain abnormalities, while others consider neurocognitive functioning and aspects related to cognition, behaviour and learning. It seems that BDD is the result of a number of biological, psychological and social factors. Most individuals with BDD report low selfesteem, feelings of worthlessness and a heightened sensitivity to criticism. Approximately 80% of individuals report having had suicidal ideation at some point during the course of their illness and up to 28% have attempted suicide.
Current treatment methods for BDD include both medication and psychotherapy. Psychological methods include psycho-education and cognitive behavioural therapy. To screen whether you may suffer from BDD, consider the questions below: • Are you concerned about the appearance of some part(s) of your body, which you consider especially unattractive? • Is your main concern with your appearance other than weight-related? • If you are at least somewhat concerned, do these concerns preoccupy you? That is, you think about them a lot and they’re hard to stop thinking about? • Has your physical ‘‘defect’’ often caused you a lot of distress, torment, or pain? • Has your physical ‘‘defect’’ caused you impairment in social, occupational or other important areas of functioning? • Has your physical ‘‘defect’’ significantly interfered with your social life? • Has your physical ‘‘defect’’ significantly interfered with your schoolwork, your job, or your ability to function in your role • Do you ever avoid things because of your physical ‘‘defect’’? If you think you may be afflicted with the disorder, visit your nearest doctor or clinical psychologist.
