from the editor..... Hi Everyone! This month’s issue marks our one year anniversary. I still cannot believe it has been a year already. Over the last twelve months we have had our ups and downs, (especially during our no Telkom line - 38 days), but we have continued to come out on top and show growth with every issue. I want to take the time to thank God, Eric, Tristan, Alicia, our printing company, our distributors, our neighbours who supported us when Telkom didn’t, our readers, and everyone who made a contribution to the magazine during the last year. You guys will never know how much I love you! So what’s next? We are working on a few surprises for the coming year, so keep an eye out for exciting news. I want to thank everyone for supporting @Garsfontein, and promise we are not going anywhere; we will continue to grow and get better with each and every issue. Greetings The editor

Cocker Spaniel rubbing is noticed. -Autoimmune haemolytic anemia is a condition where the dogs immune system attacks its own blood cells. Treatment on this is effective. -Hypothyroidism is a disorder of the thyroid gland and can be treated effectively. -Primary Seborrhea is a skin disorder and can be treated effectively. The Cocker Spaniel is the smallest member of the American Kennel Club. Since the leading role in the movie “Lady and the Tramp” was a Cocker Spaniel, this breed became the number one breed registered in the AKC from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. It is still within the top 15 registered breeds. Cocker Spaniels are a pleasure to own, they have a happy and sound temperament. They are loving and gentle and strive to keep his family happy at all times. Cocker Spaniels are excellent companions to children and the elderly and socialise well with other pets in the home. They are ideal for homes with a small garden and their primary goal is to be a companion. They can however be trained for obedience and agility shows or even field work. They also make excellent therapy dogs. The Cocker Spaniel is known as a sensitive dog mentally and physically. They do not respond well to harsh training and can become snappy when they are afraid. Health: -Eye problems can be an issue and they need to be watched and taken to a vet if constant eye
-Cockers can be prone to allergies especially food and topical substances such as bedding flea powders and dog shampoo. -Epilepsy can also be a problem. -Canine hip dyspasia and dislocation of the kneecap can also be an issue within these breeds, and can be crippling. Care: These dogs do need daily activity and do enjoy being inside with you. They will not be pleased to be left outside and will dig and bark to keep himself amused – he wants to be a constant part of the family and their activities. They are hunters by heart and are good candidates for canine sports. Feeding: The Cocker Spaniel has a healthy appetite and will overeat if given the chance Grooming: A well groomed Cocker Spaniel is very handsome and most owners will opt to have their dogs professionally groomed, bathed, brushed and trimmed. A daily brush at home is also necessary.

Lunchbox Brigade What is more fun than a snack with dip? Nine out of ten kids love a good smear of hummus, so why not make it the star of the show? Pack: pita bread, salami, olives, carrot sticks, baby tomatoes and grapes and hummus off course. (Remember to pack the hummus in a separate container to making dipping easier and less messy)
Hummus – makes about 2 cups Ingredients:
Instructions:
1 can chickpeas (roughly 2 cups drained, cooked chickpeas) 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons tahini 1 ½ tablespoons of lemon juice (Plus more to taste) 1 small clove of garlic, roughly chopped 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon finely ground black pepper
1. Drain the chickpeas into a strainer and rinse under cool running water. (if you have the patience, pinch the skins from each chickpea – this will make your hummus smoother.) 2. Combine all the ingredients in a food processor or blender. 3. Blend until the hummus is smooth ( 1 – 2 minutes) 4. Taste and adjust seasoning as desired. (To make your hummus thinner add more lemon juice or olive oil) 5. Transfer to a bowl and serve
Variations - - - -
Add 1 to 3 teaspoons of spice for more flavour – cumin or paprika For a roasted vegetable hummus try adding a cup of roasted eggplant or zucchini when blending For an olive hummus add a ¾ cup of chopped green or black olives Blend in some lightly roasted almonds or walnuts for a nutty hummus @Garsfontein - 6 - Issue 2 of 2016
Sneezewood - nieshout Ptaeroxylon Obliquum Ptaeroxylon – pronounced teroxillon This protected tree in South Africa was named Sneezewood because the sawdust from its dry wood causes violent sneezing. The Sneezewood is extremely hard and durable and highly valued as a timber for fence posts. In the past it was used extensively for railway sleepers, which in turn have been used for furniture as well. The Sneezewood’s wood is reported to burn like paraffin giving a bright, hot fire. The distribution of this tree extends from the Eastern Cape to Tanzania. It occurs in woodland, scrub forest and evergreen montane forest. This is a small genus with only one species. The common Citrus Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio demodocus) is known to visit and breed on this tree. Sneezewood plants are easily identified by opposite leaves, with three to eight pairs of dark green
leaflets, including a terminal pair at the tip. Leaflets are distinctly asymmetrical in shape. Foliage sometimes colours in autumn and winter, but the tree is not always deciduous. Flowers are small, sweetly scented, with four petals opening white with orange centres from creamy yellow buds and are produced from August to December. Male and Female flowers occur on different trees. The fruit is an oblong capsule, notched at the tip and splits open to produce winged seeds. Young stems are smooth with pale, blotched bark which becomes fissured with age. Estimates for the maximum height that a Sneezewood can reach, varies from 20 meters to 35 meters. Seeds are easily germinated if they are not damaged by insects. Trees that are planted in open soil will need good water to become established. The Sneezewood is a moderate to fast grower, growing between 0.4 meters to 1 meter per year.

Cape Glossy Starling Kleinglansspreeu
Lamprotornis nitens: When I hear the word “Starling” the first thing that comes to mind is the character - Clarice Starling – played by Jodie Foster in Thomas Harris’s Silence of the Lambs. However some research revealed that the Starling frequenting our birdbath is the very shiny Cape Glossy Starling.
This beautifully glossy blue-green bird is between 23cm and 25cm in length when fully grown and weighs approximately 100grams.The Starling has a lengthy warbling song which may include an imitation of sounds it hears in its environment. Starlings are found in South Africa where it lives in woodlands, bushveld and in suburbs. The Starling is a gregarious bird (they live in flocks) and forms; large flocks in the non-breading season. They usually feed on the ground, often foraging alongside other species
of starlings. They are habituated to humans and its diet includes fruit, insects and nectar. The Starling will sometimes feed on ectoparasites that it picks off the backs of animals and will sometimes visit bird tables for scraps. Starlings breed between October and February. Their nests are crevices such as holes in trees and out-compete other birds seeking to use these holes. Starlings are often a host to the greater honeyguide, a brood parasite that lays its eggs in other birds’ nests. Chicks are fed grasshoppers, locusts, ants and beetles as well as fruit and insect larvae.
When the Starling visits your garden is difficult not to notice the beautiful glossy display in the sunlight.

Part Two
What is Johan Jordaan
In the previous issue I showed why it is important to understand grace. I showed that the gospel is called ‘the gospel of the grace of God’ (Acts 20:24). If you do not understand grace, you do not understand the gospel. People tend to confuse the words grace and mercy. A good explanation of the difference would be: mercy is when you do not get what you do deserve: death, and grace is getting what you do not deserve: eternal life, blessings etc. (The Afrikaans word ‘genade’ is not grace either; it is often used to mean mercy and mercy is not grace. All my Afrikaans friends keep this in mind please. Afrikaans does not have a separate word for mercy.) The Amplified Bible translates grace as ‘the unmerited favour of God’. Note the fact that it is unearned, not deserved, in fact, never deserved. This is absolutely key to understanding this principle. Paul makes some effort to explain what he means by grace: Rom 4:4 Now to the one who works, his pay is not credited due to grace but due to obligation. (NET) What he is saying is that when you try to work for God’s favour, you obtain it as pay (obligation) and no longer as grace. You cannot work for grace; you cannot earn it and that is why the Amplified Bible calls it unmerited favour. Rom 11:6 And if it is by grace, it is no longer by works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace. (NET) Again Paul says that if you worked for His favour it is not grace. You cannot earn God’s grace. You cannot work for it. When we look at the number of times the words mercy and grace are used in the Old and New Testaments it tells a story of its own: OT - Mercy 208, grace 38 versus NT Mercy 54, grace 122 (from KJV). That represents a ratio of mercy/grace of 5.5 (OT) to a ratio of .44 for the NT. That is a massive shift (1250%) which should tell us that mercy lost its dominance in the New Testament. The reason for this is that grace under the system of Law was almost unheard of, so mercy ruled. Under the Law you are always in trouble so you always need mercy (reactively). We still need God’s mercy but it is not as prominent as it was in Old Testament times because we are now under grace which is proactive. So when I speak of grace I do not mean mercy – keep that in mind. There are two ways to obtain God’s favour; by working for it or by receiving it. The problem with working for God’s favour is that you can only earn so much. Most of us deserve a negative amount of favour! Then we need mercy again. Who can please God to such an extent that God
owes him/her? I certainly know that I can’t and God told me so. I thought that I was not doing to badly but He burst my bubble. We actually cannot earn anything from Him. That is why I prefer grace because it cannot be deserved; it can only be received. Rom 5:17b ... how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ! Grace is received, not earned. According to Paul Grace is opposed to works. This is one of the dichotomies that I said Paul uses throughout his epistles. That does not mean that when we do anything we cancel God’s grace. The works that Paul is talking about are works that are aimed at earning God’s favour like keeping the Law, reading your Bible, praying, tithing, regularly going to church or doing good deeds to improve your standing before God. Jesus did lots of good works but He did it under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and that is exactly how we should operate. More scriptures that show that grace is not earned: Gal 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness [come] by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. (KJV) and Gal 5:4 You who are trying to be declared righteous by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace! (NET) Paul shows that works cancels God’s grace. This comes as a bit of a shock to many but it is very clear from Galatians that the Law disqualifies you from God’s grace and more. You have fallen away from God’s free grace. Now you must work for His favour. Grace is an expression of God’s goodness. Goodness is His DNA and that is why He cannot help himself; He has to be good, He has to give. And that is grace; God giving from His goodness and loving-kindness. As a father He protects us, He provides for us, He loves us, He craves a relationship with us. He wants to be our daddy (abba) and for us to be His sons and daughters. To summarise: Grace is God’s undeserved favour. It cannot be earned. When you work for it you lose it. It is like keeping the Law for your salvation; it cannot be done (Gal 2:16). Grace can be likened to a snow flake and works (Law) to a raging fire. They simply cannot coexist. Next month we will look at Jesus and the fact that we can say that He is grace.

Medical moments from the cookie jar:
“Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs, being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers’ eyes, being vexed, a sea nourished with lovers’ tears. What is it else? A madness most discreet, a choking gall and a preserving sweet.”-- William Shakespeare
To quote one of my most esteemed professors of Internal Medicine, ‘If you can’t measure it; don’t mention it’, a point made clear during ward rounds and academic discussions to highlight the importance of evidence based medicine and quantitative metrics. Naturally, this type of conditioning becomes pervasive, and tints most glasses through which one views the world. ‘But love?’ you say (having just navigated yourself through Valentine’s Day), ‘surely that is unquantifiable? Surely that can escape the harsh delineation of science and rational explanation?’ Well, if we are to attempt to measure and explain ‘romantic love’, we should start at the beginning: namely to define what we mean by this concept. If one looks at various well known dictionaries and reference sources, it remains vague and sweepingly encompasses numerous elements. Amongst these include an intense attraction involving the desire for a ‘union or merger’, idealization of the beloved, the notion of exclusivity, intrusive thinking about love ‘object’ (hmm!), elements of emotional dependency, reordering of motivational hierarchies of life priorities, and a powerful sense of empathy and concern for the beloved. And to my cynical mind, these statements could easily be mistaken for comments from someone with a drug addiction! So let’s delve into the science behind this ‘love’. How does it all begin? Well, first is ‘lust’ or ‘erotic passion’, which is driven mostly by oestrogens and testosterones which create the drive. This is followed by attraction or ‘romantic passion’, which is the so-called ‘love-struck’ phase. But what bridges the gap? Here we step into a scientific quagmire, which has been wondrously exploited by various retailers, namely the concept of human pheromones. What we do know is that olfaction (smelling) is one of our critical senses, in which chemical information is gathered from external world for interpretation. There are broadly two classes of olfactory stimuli namely odorants (small volatile molecules) which are translated into smells, scents or odours; and
pheromones (which are not necessarily odorants and may be larger organic compounds) which result in stereotyped behaviour or hormonal changes. Pheromones are well described in species-specific cues on social or sexual behaviour, and have special receptors which are linked to different processing regions of the brain than olfaction (smelling). These pheromones are well described scientifically in insects such as the female silk moth, which releases a volatile sexual attractant called bombykol in order to elicit the full sequence of sexual behaviour in male moths. In mice, dimethylpyrazine excreted in female urine delays the onset of puberty, makes them less fertile and decreases testosterone levels in males. Converse responses are found with different chemicals found in the male murine urine. It is the vomeronasal organ that detects pheromones in mammals, which is situated about one centimetre into the nose next to the vomer bone (the argument being that it is a vestigial organ in humans, if present at all). Pheromones bind to their receptors located in this organ, like a lock and key mechanism, and cause electrical transmission of this information to the limbic system of the brain (this signalling can be seen on functional magnetic resonance (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans). This area of the brain is responsible for pleasure and reward cycles, as well as emotional responses and socio-sexual behaviours, although the pheromone information never reaches higher levels of consciousness. Many aspects of sexual activity, compatibility, group behaviour and the formation of the ‘inexplicable impression’ may thus be explained by the subconscious processing of this information The hot debate continues as to whether pheromones actually exist in humans. In 1971 McClintock demonstrated menstrual synchrony and suppression in females who live in the same dormitory which he suggested may be as a result of pheromone influence (1). Savic and Lindstrom published that brain responses to putative pheromones and objects of sexual attraction
@Garsfontein - 10 - Issue 2 of 2016
The chemistry of love - Part 1 differed according to sexual orientation (2). Additionally, they described the effect of androgens (male hormones) on sex-specific patterns of hypothalamic brain activity (an area involved in sexual behaviour), which differed significantly from normal odorants (3). Other researchers found that the levels of cortisol increased in women who took a whiff of male sweat containing androstadienone (4). Saxton et al. took this one step further, and found that women in a speed-dating encounter found men more attractive if they had be exposed to this hormone (5). However, it seems that detection of these hormones is varied as well as genetically determined. Testosterone itself has been linked to good immune responses and dominance behaviours. The old adage of turning your passion into your work took on an entirely different meaning for me when I read a study by Miller, Tybur and Jordan published in the journal ‘Evolution and human behaviour’ entitled ‘Ovulatory cycle effects on tip earnings by lap dancers: economic evidence for human oestrus?’ (6) These intrepid researchers not only got to frequent ‘gentlemen’s clubs’, but were paid to do so with research grants. By comparing the tip-earnings of the lap-dancers to where they were in their menstrual cycles, they concluded that the ladies earned more money when they were ovulating (and thus most fertile). Interestingly, girls on the oral contraceptive pill, which suppresses cyclical hormone fluctuations, also had lower earnings. They postulated that oestradiol may have a pheromonetype subliminal effect. Further studies found that men’s real world behaviour is sensitive to their female partner’s oestrus cues. Women find the body scent of men with symmetrical masculine faces more attractive during the fertile stage of their cycle, and as well as enjoying male competitive social behaviour more (7). When Jimmy Soul sings enthusiastically ‘If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife’ he may well be quoting a verified scientific fact. Women during their fertile time of their cycle report feeling more attractive, and are more likely to engage in flirtation even outside of their relationships (and attractive girls more so), particularly if they are paired with men low on perceived ‘good genes indicators’. These cycle cues also resulted in increased ‘mate guarding’
during this time (8). Ovulation also seemed to dictate wardrobe selection, with an increased desire to ‘dress to impress’ during this time (9). High oestradiol levels (female hormones) were linked with greater male perception of female facial attractiveness, large breasts and a low waist –tohip ratio, which were associated with high mating standards. These women were more likely to be ‘poached’, reported decreased overall satisfaction with current long-term relationships, increased inclination toward mating opportunities outside their stable relationships, and carried a higher ‘mate value’ (10). Thus the evolutionary adaptation and connection between fertility and attractiveness. But girls, whatever you do, don’t cry! Human tears seem to contain a chemo signal which decreases sexual appeal, decreases arousal and diminishes testosterone (11). So the beginnings of a love affair may be guided by various aspects: Is there a ‘love map’, a kind of template for the perfect partner? Is this ‘love map’ based on appearances, personality, a limbic resonance or pheromones (which may even elicit a specific immune response to a potential partner)? Or is it all just guided by hormones? But…my time is up; it will just have to wait for next month to delve further into the chemical mysteries behind this thing called love. In the meantime, just keep right on loving! 1. McClintock MK. Why should you care about our environment? “What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another.” Mahatma Gandhi The history of life on earth is the history of the interaction between living things and their surroundings…. Only within the moment of time that is represented by the present century has one species – man – acquired significant power to alter the nature of his world” Rachel Carson (author of Silent Spring) We place a lot of importance on first impression, we are very concerned with others opinions of us, yet our focus appears to remain on our immediate environment forgetting the impact our actions have of the environment as a whole. You do not have to be an environmental activist to care, or to make a difference. Here are a few reasons why we should all care. “When the earth is sick and polluted, human health is impossible…. to heal ourselves we must heal our planet, and to heal our plant we must ourselves.” Bobby McLeod Healthy living is dependent on a clean environment – how can you be healthy when the air you breathe is polluted and the water that sustains you is full of toxins. Yes we have systems in place to treat our water before we use it; have you considered what would happen if something goes wrong with that system? Perhaps doing what we can to prevent pollution is a safer option. Global Warming is causing climate patterns to change.
Fact: the 12 hottest years on record all occurred during the last 15 years. We can choose to believe that the heat and drought we are experiencing is just a freak coincidence, or we can choose to act before it is too late. You should care; because your great-great grandchildren will appreciate having clean air to breath. Biodiversity is important – this refers to the variety of plants, animals and other living things in our world. Our basic necessities are provided by biodiversity – our food from various species and plants, water, air and material for shelter. Natural processes have formed to provide these necessities, if something happened to one of them, it may cause an unwanted chain reaction. Caring is a reflection of your character Nature provides you with so much for free – air, water, food and beautiful landscape with breath-taking views. Protecting and preserving the environment seems a small price to pay to show our appreciation. Earth is our home – you maintain your house and garden keeping it clean, tidy and in full repair – why not do that for the earth? There are many ways to show that you care; the most common ones are the famous 3 R’s (REDUCE – REUSE – RECYCLE) Keep them in mind, and future generations just might be able to enjoy the pleasures our beautiful planet provides.

BABA GRUB started off as a small label in 2013 and has, since then, established itself as the go-to brand for parents who are committed to ensuring that their babies and toddlers receive only the purest and best quality food. Its established place in the market has been achieved through dedication, hard work and ensuring an ongoing process of improvement in quality and taste. As adults, often a lot of thought is put into what we eat. Increasingly, we are realizing exactly how many nasties can be found in readymade meals. All too often however, we forget to apply the same caution when it comes to choosing store-bought over homemade baby food and purees. There is a growing awareness by parents that the normal healthy store-bought foods may not be the best option for their baby or toddler, potentially containing many hidden ingredients, additives and chemicals. Manufacturers also often push the natural, organic and nothing artificial added angle, providing a “feel good” factor, for parents who offer store-bought processed food to their babies and children as our ever-increasing busy lives leave little time to prepare an array of healthy eats and treats. In addition to this, as many as one in five adults and children, and possibly as many as one in three with behavioural problems,
present with allergies or intolerances to common foods such as milk, wheat, yeast and eggs, and common additives and chemicals used to keep food fresh for longer (based on current, on-going and historic research dating back to the early 1980s). All BABA GRUB products use the finest and freshest quality natural ingredients with free-range protein and, where possible, organic fruit and veggies being sourced. All meals are made to order with the greatest care, and are frozen once prepared and cooled, thereby eliminating the possibility of contamination. With no added sugar, salt, preservatives, additives, fillers or colorants, BABA GRUB IS the healthy option of informed parents. All of the natural nutrients found in fruit, vegetables and meats are kept intact, along with the tastes, colour, texture and aroma BABA GRUB allows your little one to learn the different textures whilst benefiting nutritionally, while mixing different foods to add variety and excitement to meal time. With 4 different meal stages on offer, growing children are fully catered for with all the crucial years of development covered, from 6 months all the way to 3 years. BABA GRUB is also convenient, and hassle free with no fuss to prepare. Pets often escape the security of their homes and more often than not cannot return on their own. For this reason the For4Paws database was developed. The aim of the database is to assist pets who have managed to escape to be re-united with their owners. When found, the animal’s criteria are run through the database, which generates a list of possible owners who are then contacted.

It doesn’t matter if your pet is or isn’t chipped and tagged; you can still register him on the For4Paws database. Personal information of the owner, the pet’s particulars and a clear photograph will be required for registration.

Why should you register? Lost pets are scared and anxious, a trip to the vet with a stranger – pure torture! The For4Paws database volunteers strive to minimise the
trauma by re-uniting pet and owner as soon as possible. Current stats: 178 dogs, 22 cats, 5 birds and 3 rabbits – a total of 208 animals from 84 owners! If you are not one of these – ensure you request your registration form URGENTLY!
