The Winter Solstice marks our shortest day and longest night of the year, this year our Winter Solstice falls on the same day as Father’s Day. Perhaps it is because I lost my dad at a very young age, but Father’s Day always seems to attract so much less attention than Mother’s Day. Why does Father’s Day fall on the shortest day of the year? Had it not been for Sonara Smart Dodd, (who was being raised by her single dad, William Jackson Smart, a war veteran and single dad of six,) who convinced the church that father’s should be honored too, we might not have a ‘Father’s Day’ today. On the 19th of June 1910, the first sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city of Spokane, Washington, and Father’s Day is still being celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June, thanks to Sonara. Remember to appreciate your Dad and give him an astronomical Fathers Day this Year Too all the dad’s and grandfather’s out there (Biological and adopted)– we love you and want you to know that your love does not go unnoticed. Basset vs Beagle

The Basset and the Beagle are two dog breeds I always get mixed up, that’s why this month we will feature them side by side. The Basset hound is a short-legged breed of the hound family. Bassets are scent hounds that were originally bred for the purpose of hunting rabbits and hare. Their sense of smell for tracking is second only to that of the Bloodhound. Appearance: Bassets are large, short, solid and long, with curved sabre tails held high over their long backs. An adult dog weighs between 20 and 35 kilograms. The Basset’s short legs are due to a form of dwarfism. Because Bassets are so heavy and they have such short legs, they are not able to hold themselves above water for very long when swimming. Coat: The short-haired coat of the Basset is smooth and soft, and shed constantly. They are usually black, tan and white tricolours or tan and white bicolours. Temperament: The Basset Hound is a friendly, outgoing and playful dog. They can be extremely tolerant with children and other pets. Bassets will not respond to punishment-based training and have therefore been described as “stubborn”. Health: Basset Hounds have large ears that do not allow air to circulate inside them like other breeds with erect or more open ears. This can result in infections and ear mites if their ears are not kept clean and dry. In addition to ear problems, Basset Hounds may be susceptible to eye issues. Due to their droopy eyes, the area under the eyeball will collect dirt and become clogged with mucus. We love this sad looking pooch, if you are the proud owner of a Basset Hound, send us a picture and we will include it in the next issue.

The Beagle is a breed of small to medium-sized dog. Beagles are scent hounds, developed primarily for tracking hare, rabbit, deer and small game. They have a great sense of smell and tracking instinct that sees them employed as detection dogs for prohibited agricultural imports and foodstuffs in quarantine around the world. Beagles are intelligent but single-minded and popular pets because of their size, even temper and lack of inherited health problems. They are generally between 33 and 41cm high and weigh between 8.2 and 15.9kg with females being slightly smaller than males on average. Alongside the Bloodhound and Basset Hound, the Beagle has one of the best developed senses of smell of any dog. In the 1950s, John Paul Scott and John Fuller began a 13-year study of canine behavior. As part of this research, they tested the scenting abilities of various breeds by putting a mouse in a one-acre field and timing how long it took the dog to find it. The Beagle found it in less than a minute, while the fox-terrier took 15 minutes and the Scottish Terriers failed to find it at all. Temperament: The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Described in several breed standards as “merry”, they are amiable and typically neither aggressive nor timid, although this depends on the individual. They enjoy company, and although they may initially be standoffish with strangers, they are easily won over. Health: The typical longevity of Beagles is 12-15 years, which is a common lifespan for dogs of their size. Beagles are prone to epilepsy, but this can often be controlled with medication. Working life: Beagles were developed primarily for hunting hare, an activity known as “beagling”. They were seen as ideal hunting companions. The 2007 Disney Movie – Underdog featured a Beagle.

Medical Moments from the Cookie Jar:

Dr.Joji Theron (MBChB, MSC)

I was at an international medical conference last year in October. Florence was vibrant in her fall colors, and the dilute sunshine washed the city in a golden glow. Desperate to feed my soul and rejuvenate after the last few days of dry scientifically rigorous evidenced based medical presentations, I played truant in the final session to visit the Uffizi Gallery. After a frantic taxi-cabdash though the congested streets (in which a very energetic driver played Miriam Makeba and Mandoza enthusiastically after establishing my country of origin), I slipped into the majestic building with an hour to view one of the most prestigious art collections on our planet: but better than nothing I reckoned.

documenting iodine deficiency. Iodine is essential in the body’s production of thyroid hormone and is ingested mostly from seafood. In bygone eras with no refrigeration and long transit times, unless you were living at the coast, you were at risk in developing iodine deficiency hypothyroidism. Even until recently, when iodine was added to salt, iodine deficiency was the leading cause of reversible mental retardation and growth impairment in the world. Gentileschi’s depiction of ‘Judith and her maidservant’ about to behead Holofernes was painted in the inland town of Florence in 1614, and again carefully documents the royal lady’s goiter (or at least the model whom she used) (picture labelled B).

A

I positioned myself in front of Artemisia Gentileschi’s ‘Santa Caterina d’Alessandria’ (picture labelled A); closed my eyes and took a deep breath, anticipating drinking in the beauty of the composition, the colors, the form, the brilliance. I opened my eyes. It took only a few seconds to focus on the masterpiece when, much to my horror, my first perception was a diagnosis. There she was, serene and an immortal image of sensuality, looking at me with her dark eyes. With hypothyroidism (low levels of thyroid hormone). The artist had vividly captured what she was observing: a swelling in the front of her model’s neck which my medical predecessors have labeled a goiter. I look for other possible signs: slightly puffy hands and eyes, thinning of the lateral third of her eyebrows. And she murmurs across the centuries, telling me that although she is wealthy and considered the beauty of her time, she is always tired. She struggles to fall pregnant, and bleeds profusely with irregular and frequent menstruations. She is mostly depressed, and even sometimes finds it difficult to breathe. The artist has been kind to her, as her skin is coarser than it used to be, as is her hair which is also thinning. And no one knows why.

B

C

But there are other causes. In Velázquez’s ‘Christ after flagellation contemplated by the Christian soul’ (figured labelled C), the child with the goiter was from Madrid, thus implying other causes of congenital hypothyroidism apart from iodine deficiency. The mother sends her heartache to me, crying that her child was slow in walking, does not talk well and seems not to have

Santa Caterina got me wondering as to the cause of her illness: and were there others captured in oils on canvas which could give clues to the story. After some investigation*, I discovered that there were indeed. Artists such as Gentileschi, who painted their patrons residing in more inland and mountainous locations, were most likely

Whispers across the confines of time the same intellectual ability as his contemporaries. The new mother who modeled for Cima da Conegliano’s ‘The Virgin and Child’ in 1505 (picture labelled D) in Venice tells me with her tired eyes that her symptoms started after the birth of her baby, lending a clue to possible post-partum thyroiditis. And I want to reach out and tell her that it will soon be better, that the symptoms are usually transient. At ‘The crucifixion of St Andrew’, the thin woman on the left has a swelling in the region of her thyroid, but as there are lymph nodes also visible, the diagnosis which Caravaggio paints for us may be of a more sinister cause; thyroid cancer (picture E).

documentation, and even as an erotic ideal. And that brings me back to the dark eyes of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria. Four-hundred years later I can but admire this woman, who manages to do what so many of us would strive for. She wears her goiter with a beautiful simplicity, unashamed and certain in her femininity. And across the ages she whispers: no matter what illness or deformity you have, you are beautiful just as you are.

Artists of the Renaissance painted thyroid irregularities as they observed them; but the concept expanded from the denotative context to include connotative inferences. They used the swellings as symbols to arouse pity in the viewers; to depict poverty or low social standing; as caricatures of important people (Jusepe de Ribera’s ‘A man with a Goiter’ shown in picture F); identification of residence; self-portrait

Beef Pot Roast with Baby Potatoes Method:

1 Season the roast beef well with salt and freshly cracked black pepper. 2 Heat sunflower oil in a large, heavy based pot and brown the beef roast on all sides turning it over and moving it around to ensure the edges are well browned. 3 Remove the beef pot roast from the pot and set aside. 4 Add the onions and carrots to the pot and fry to soften, then add the red wine and the beef stock pot and allow to simmer gently for 5 minutes to reduce the red wine. 5 Return the beef roast to the pot, add the thyme, water and baby potatoes and allow to simmer covered for 45 minutes to one hour or until the beef is just slightly pink inside. 6 Remove the beef and potatoes from the pot and allow the beef to rest for a few minutes before carving. 7 While the beef is resting mix the corn flower with a little water to make a smooth paste and stir it into the pot and allow to simmer for 5 minutes to thicken to make the gravy. 8 Serve with rice and steamed greens.

Ingredients:

3 Carrots peeled and sliced 15ml corn flower 12 potatoes 250ml water 5ml thyme 2 onions sliced 250ml red wine 1 Tub Knorr beef stock pot 30ml Sunflower oil 1.3kg beef roast

Therapeutic Reflexology –

an alternate way for good health

Our lives are really busy. Daily we find ourselves in stressful situations at office or at home. Uncertainty of future, conflict at office or home, examination time for students etc are some such situations which can cause insomnia, depression, loss of appetite and in general poor health. In such situations toxins are produced which are harmful and disturbs normal functioning of the body.

it relieved pain and improved functioning of some organs. During 1930’s, Eunice Ingham in USA researched and discovered that the entire body can be treated by applying pressure on the reflex points present on the feet, hands and ears. She developed a map of the entire body on the feet. This science has now grown into an alternate form of medicine and practised around the world.

Treatment of many chronic diseases by modern medicine creates several side effects eg lack of appetite, pain, nausea, vomiting etc. Reflexology is beneficial in mitigating such issues and many more through a holistic process. It has no contraindications. Reflexology is an ancient art and science based on the principles that there are reflexes in the hands, ears and feet wherein all the body structures are mirrored. These reflexes are stimulated by thumb and fingers which brings about physiological balance of all body systems and achieves normalisation of body functions. This science was mastered by our ancestors 5000 years ago in China and India. In 1913, Dr William Fitzerald (in USA) discovered that when pressure was applied to certain points in the body,

By examining the feet, a reflexologist can understand the imbalances in various body systems. Imbalances change the colour, texture, temperature of the feet. The feet reveals a lot to the reflexologist. By a methodical technique, these imbalances can be normalised. It helps in detoxification. Such treatment is supplemented with advice on diet and lifestyle.

Hoopoe (Upupa epops) Breeding

The Hoopoe is a colourful bird found across Afro-Eurasia, notable for its distinctive “crown” of feathers. The Hoopoe was classified in the clade Coraciiform, which also includes Kingfishers, Bee-eaters, and Rollers. The Hoopoe is a medium-sized bird, 25– 32 cm long, with a 44–48 cm wingspan. It weighs 46 – 89 g. The species is highly distinctive, with a long, thin tapering bill that is black. The strengthened musculature of the head allows the bill to be opened when probing inside the soil. Distribution and habitat The Hoopoe is widespread in Europe, Asia, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Most European and north Asian birds migrate to the tropics in winter. In contrast, the African populations are sedentary all year. Behaviour and ecology In what was long thought to be a defensive posture, Hoopoes sunbathe by spreading out their wings and tail low against the ground and tilting their head up; they often fold their wings and preen halfway through. Diet and feeding

Hoopoes are monogamous, (although the pair bond apparently only lasts for a single season,) and territorial. The male calls frequently to advertise his ownership of the territory. Chases and fights between rival males (and sometimes females) are common and can be brutal. Birds will try to stab rivals with their bills, and individuals are occasionally blinded in fights. Hoopoes have well-developed anti-predator defences in the nest. The uropygial gland of the incubating and brooding female is quickly modified to produce a foul-smelling liquid, and the glands of nestlings do so as well. These secretions are rubbed into the plumage. The secretion, which smells like rotting meat, is thought to help deter predators, as well as deter parasites and possibly act as an antibacterial agent. The incubation period for the species is between 15 and 18 days, during which time the male feeds the female. Incubation begins as soon as the first egg is laid. The chicks hatch with a covering of downy feathers. By around day three to five, feather quills emerge which will become the adult feathers. The chicks are brooded by the female for between 9 to 14 days. The female later joins the male in the task of bringing food. The young fledge in 26 to 29 days and remain with the parents for about a week more. Relationship with humans The diet of the Hoopoe includes many species considered by humans to be pests, such as the pupae of the processionary moth, a damaging forest pest. For this reason the species is afforded protection under the law in many countries.

The diet of the Hoopoe is mostly composed of insects, although small reptiles, frogs and plant matter such as seeds and berries are sometimes taken as well. It is a solitary forager which typically feeds on the ground. More rarely they will feed in the air, where their strong and rounded wings make them fast and manoeuvrable, in pursuit of numerous swarming insects.

Preparing to Sell

Buying or selling a home and moving to another property is one of the major life stressors, even more so if you don’t have all the requisite knowledge and do’s and don’ts of the property game at your fingertips. Now that you’ve made the decision that it’s time for a change, where do you start regarding selling your property and managing all the necessary property transactions in the process? First steps: For starters, you need to do your research. Choose an agent who has the trust of the community, and is visible and active in your area. Typically, you would invite an agent or number of agents into your home to do an evaluation on your property. At this point the agent will review the features of your property, take photographs, list any additional information about the property that you volunteer that will help the agent determining a fair market value for the property. The agent should then return as soon as possible with a comprehensive valuation and marketing plan for your property. The agent will discuss with you the reasons for arriving at the market related estimation and then run through the exact marketing plan that they will follow to get your property sold. Ensure you raise any questions you have regarding the sale of your property and get clarity before proceeding. This is essentially part of your research when it comes to choosing an agency to manage all the logistic entailed in selling your home. Why you should use Leapfrog…You will benefit by selling your property with Leapfrog as we have set our sights on shaking up the real estate industry – from the way that we reward and incentivize our agents and business partners to the way we approach the sales and marketing of our client’s properties. We blend our experiences and best of breed practices into a single powerful marketing and sales plan that is innovative, transparent, front and honest, insuring that you benefit in the end.

Essentially, your Leapfrog agent plays a vital role between you, the seller and prospective buyers, managing the legal, financial and marketing logistics involved in the process. Your Leapfrog agent has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to sales techniques, various financing options, valuation methods and all the relevant property laws and regulations. Your Leapfrog agent will also have a solid understanding of your local property market and will always act in the best interest of the client with due consideration to the interests of the other parts involved. In fact, you’ll find dealing with a Leapfrog agent is an exercise governed by the highest ethics, honesty and code of professional code of conduct. We assure you’ll find that selling your home through Leapfrog truly is a pleasure! You’ve chosen a Leapfrog agent. Good choice! Once you are happy with your marketing plan, and understand all your rights and obligations as explained by your Leapfrog agent, you can go ahead and give instructions to our agent to begin marketing your property to prospective buyers by signing the exclusive mandate. Many people out there don’t fully understand the necessity for a signed mandate – it is an essential document that protects the interests of you, our client, and the Leapfrog agency

Acacia Robusta Without a signed mandate no professional agent will run the risk of marketing your property at considerable expense if there is a chance you will suddenly award the sale of your property to a competing agency. Furthermore, the mandate protects you by ensuring you get the level of service you require on the sale of your property. As soon as a mandate has been signed, the property will be presented to all Leapfrog agents for their review so that they can provide input into the marketing of your property. Your Leapfrog agent will prepare the advertising materials, for all available marketing channels and start the marketing process. It is absolutely critical that you play your part in this process by making sure your property is well presented by keeping it neat and tidy. First impressions are important so make sure your house is appealing by getting rid of the clutter, doing a good spring clean beforehand and making your property appear as spacious and well-maintained as possible. This way, you are more likely to get a buyer interested in a home that effectively sells itself. A firm offer is put on the table! The moment of truth arrives. This is where you hope your agent has a number of offers for your property so you have the luxury of choice. You are not required to accept an offer that does not meet your expectations. It is between you and your agent to determine whether the buyer is open to further negotiation. Once you are satisfied, you are required to accept the offer in writing which creates a contract of sale between you and the buyer. Assuming all goes well with the buyer’s application for finance, your house is then officially sold. What a pleasure!

his tree is found on the edges of rivers and streams, and may be found further from permanent water, in higher rainfall areas. It is the most conspicuously upright, often very large thorntree, next to rivers, and has exceptionally dense, dark green, feathery foliage. Trees reach a height of 25 m, with very dense foliage. Branches stay thick, even towards their extremities, giving the robust appearance. It has conspicuous, often dark, cushion-like thickenings, at the base of new thorns and where the leaves come out. Leaflets tend to look half-closed. The flower-balls are white or yellow and can be seen early in spring. The pods are slender and slightly sickle-shaped and hang from the trees in bunches. The bark is dark grey to dark brown and closely grooved lengthways. Links with animals - The leaves are browsed by kudu, while the flowers attract bees and butterflies. Human uses - The underbark is used to make twine. Edible wood borer beetles are found in the wood. Gardening - This tree needs a well-watered, warm garden. It will grow rapidly from seed. Leaves - Twice compound and tend to be grouped near thorns, where they are clumped on cushions, but often not the same cushion as the thorns. Flowers - Up to 25 white ball-like flowers grow on green stems in groups, between the leaves and origin of the thorns, on raised cushions. July to September. Pods - The slender, slightly sickle-shaped pods are rounded at the tip. Pods are borne in bunches, are dark brown and burst open on the tree when ripe, from October to February. Thorns - The straight, white, paired thorns are joined at the base, which may be enlarged like a cushion. Thorns may be underdeveloped. (70 x 110 mm)

Environmental

This is the time of year when everyone is busy raking up and throwing away the fallen autumn leaves. The practice of removing our yard waste to landfills is enormously unsustainable: •

We spend endless hours raking, blowing, and bagging the leaves that fall every year.

The use of leaf blowers is a source of noise pollution and air pollution, and uses large amounts of non-renewable fossil fuel.

These huge piles are hauled away by truck, using more gasoline and causing more air pollution.

Often this organic yard material is dumped into landfills, which destroys wildlife habitat.

Then we have mulch trucked in to replace the benefits of the leaves we just hauled away.

And we replace the nutrients that were freely available from the decomposition of those leaves with synthetic fertilizers, which are another petroleum product.

This cycle cannot be sustained without causing increasing damage to our environment. It is much more sustainable to manage this yard waste on our own properties. Fortunately, this is very easy to do and also returns nutrients to the soil, provides habitat for many organisms, and ensures healthy plants. I pile up these leaves in every one of my flower beds, sometimes it is more than two feet deep. In the spring I take a hand rake and loosen the leaves around my emerging plants, which hide the leaves during the growing season. By the time the next leaves fall, the old leaves have completely decomposed and the soil is ready for a new blanket.

Why do I do this? •

There is a cycle of life contained in the leaf litter and we destroy many forms of wildlife every time we remove these leaves.

Many butterflies find shelter in the leaf litter, either in egg, pupal, or adult form, to safely wait out the winter and emerge in the spring.

Leaf litter provides food and shelter to an amazing variety of invertebrates who break down the leaves, which feeds the soil and other wildlife.

Healthy plants are dependent on healthy soil.

The deeper the leaf litter, the more spiders are supported. Spiders are an essential element in keeping pest insects in balance.

Leaf litter is also home to ladybugs, salamanders, toads, and other predators of pest insects. It is no wonder that pests like aphids thrive when we continue to destroy the habitat of the predators that would keep them under control.

Every spring these leaves are covered with birds who pick through the leaves in search of a tasty meal.

Trucked in mulch is not necessary when the leaves are left to cover the soil because the leaf litter acts as a natural blanket of mulch, controlling soil moisture and temperature.

I know there are many gardeners who cannot bear the thought of even one leaf creating a “mess” in their pristine garden beds. But it’s easy to tuck the leaves under your shrubs or in a back corner where they can work their magic and leave your sense of tidiness intact. Or the leaves can be composted and then spread over your soil so at least the natural nutrients can be returned to the soil. The benefits to your local wildlife far outweigh any need for neatness.

My kind toon geen respek vir my nie Anita Sinosich n Mens hoor so dikwels n gesprek tussen twee vriendinne wat so lui: Ella se seun is so ongeskik met haar. As dit my kind was….”

“kom eet ek bring jou kos”

Ouers is rolmodelle. Happy Father’s Day

Hoekom oorbeskerm ouers ? Hier is n paar moontlikhede: Ouers wat dalk self in oorbeskermende omgewings groot geword het.

Building Blocks for Good Parenting

By Anita Sinosich

Parenting remains an enormous challenge for any parent. What can Building Blocks for Good Parenting offer you? You will find answers to questions such as: • What is a child’s aim with misbehaviour? • What is your understanding of discipline? • How do you manage your child’s unresolved anger? • Do you know your personal parenting style? • Do you implement the building blocks for a good relationship with your child?

Projeksie.

Ek is superieur.” Ten slotte.

Warriors As a child you would wait And watch from far away. But you always knew that you’d be the one that work while they all play And you, you’d lay awake at night and scheme Of all the things that you would change but it was just a dream! Here we are, don’t turn away now, We are the warriors that built this town. Here we are, don’t turn away now, We are the warriors that built this town. From Dust. The time will come, when you’ll have to rise Above the best, improve yourself Your spirit never dies Farewell, I’ve gone, to take my throne Above, don’t weep for me Cause this will be the labor of my love Here we are, don’t turn away now, We are the warriors that built this town. Here we are, don’t turn away now, We are the warriors that built this town. From Dust. Here we are, don’t turn away now, We are the warriors that built this town. Here we are, don’t turn away now, We are the warriors that built this town. From Dust.

Memory Man by David Baldacci. Nothing better than something new by the master storyteller, David Baldacci. #1 New York Times bestselling author has returned with an astounding and engaging new thriller with an interesting new detective, Amos Decker. This new hero, the Memory Man of the title, has one of them most exceptional brains in the world due to an injury attained playing football in college. Decker has total recall and everything he has ever seen or read at any point in his life, he can remember. His analytic powers also far exceed those of most mortals. With a fast moving narrative, a most unusual and original detective this is an absolutely wonderful addition to the mystery and thriller genre.
