With all our cold weather of late it is hard to believe that we are already more than half way through our winter season. I was surprised to see some blooms on a jasmine in our garden this week. Granted, this specific jasmine is a little early, it reminded me that winter doesn’t last forever and without winter we would never be able to enjoy the glorious re-birth the spring brings us.

The Crested Barbet / Kuifkophoutkapper Kopaope Did you know that the Crested Barbet is a welcomed garden bird, as it almost eliminates the local snail population? The Crested Barbet is a small bird that blends well in the bush. He belly is yellow with red speckles, wings are black with white specks and it has a broad black band on its neck. The face is speckled yellow and red and it has a small black crest. This species has a large range, with an estimated
global extent of occurrence of 2,900,000km. It is common all over Southern Africa: Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland. The Crested Barbet is common in a wide range of Woodland habitats. It prefers moist or dry open woodland, with trees such as Brachystegia (miombo) and Colospermum mopane (Mopane), but is also found in savanna, suburban gardens, woodland thickets, watercourses and grassland with patches of alien trees. Crested Barbets are usually found singly or in pairs. They do not fly easily and then only for short distances and are generally seen hopping around on the ground looking for food. Crested Barbets are aggressive towards other birds in their territory and chase off both nest competitors, such as other Barbets, and other birds such as doves and thrushes.
from the aloe and weeping boer-bean nectar, and is famous for eating snails in gardens, where it is usually welcomed for this reason. Occasionally, it will also take in eggs or even chicks of other birds. The Crested Barbet is monogamous and territorial during breeding. Egg-laying season is year-long, peaking in September – December. The Crested Barbets roost in a hole in a tree or a Sisal log in a garden. Both parents excavate the nest, which consists of a chamber dug into the underside of a dead branch. The nest is then defended vigorously against other holenesting birds, sometimes evicting enemy birds out of their active nests. One to five eggs are laid between September to December – but usually 3 to 4 are laid at daily intervals. Incubation lasts between 13 to 17 days, beginning with the second or third egg. The female incubates during the night, with the male taking over during most of the day. The chicks hatch naked and blind. They are fed exclusively insects by both parents and stay in the nest for about 31 days. The nest entrance hole is enlarged as they get older. The Crested Barbet is very vocal, the call being a trill that can continue for long periods. It has a distinct Shrill.
These birds are omnivorous, eating largely insects – such as termites, beetles, grasshoppers, moths – when fruit is scarce. Its favorite fruits seem to be: karees, guarris, wild figs and jackal berries. It forages for insects mostly on the ground, sometimes flying into foliage to eat fruit. It is also known to feed

Liquidambar styraciflua American Sweet Gum These colourful trees can be seen across the street from Woodhill Spar on St. Bernard Drive. The earliest record of the tree appears to be in a Spanish work by F. Hemandez published in 1651, in which he describes it as a large tree producing fragrant gum resembling liquid amber, hence the name. While narrow and erect when young, this tree becomes more rounded with age. It eventually reaches 60 to 75 feet tall. Spread is usually 20 to 25 feet, but trees may grow much wider in great age. Deep green, five to seven lobed, 3 to 7 inch-wide leaves turn purple, yellow or red in autumn. The autumn colour of seedling trees is variable, so it’s a good idea to select a tree during autumn to be sure of good colour. Branching pattern, furrowed bark, corky wings on twigs, and bristly fruits are showy in winter.
The trees perform best in neutral or slightly acid soil. It forms surface roots that can be a nuisance in lawns, planting beds or narrow parking strips. The liquidambar is pyramidal turning to oval or rounded with irregular and asymmetrical branching. The trunk is grayish-brown, deeply furrowed into narrow, somewhat rounded edges. Stems are light to dark reddish-brown or yellowish-brown, aromatic, rounded or somewhat angled, often with prominent corky ridges. Leaves are alternate, simple, star-shaped with 5 to 7 lobes, 4-7 inches long, with axillary tufts on the principal veined beneath. The liquidambar is often confused with the maples, but maples have opposite leaf arrangements. Autumn colour is yellowish to purple to reddish. The tree holds leaves until late in autumn. Flower: Flowers are monoecious, not significant Fruit: Fruit is a persistent spiny, syncarp (multiple fruit) of capsules The tree prefers full sun.

What We Love about Winter
For most of us winter is a drag, our early morning commute to work a cold fight through traffic and when our glorious African sun rises it is not nearly as warm as we would like it to be. It is just a miserable, miserable time.
Winter is not that bad? Here are a few things that will help you survive.
Warm Beverages
– nothing gets rid of the chill like a mug full of hot tea, and nothing satisfies your sweet tooth like a big “hot Chocolate” topped with whipped cream and marshmallows. Oh, and don’t forget about hot toddies, Irish coffees and a warm glass of gluehwein.
SOUP – Butternut, potato and leak, pea and ham,
chicken and mushroom or minestrone…… and don’t forget the warmed ciabatta.
Accessories – Layers are one
thing, but who doesn’t love a good accessory? Sure summer has the coolest unisex accessory of all – sunglasses, but winter has hats, gloves, scarfs, boots, socks and even legwarmers are returning from the 80’s.
Fires – Sure a
heater is nice, but there is nothing like the radiating heat and light from a real fire right there in your living room. What a wonderful feeling to get so hot you have to move away from the fire. If you are lucky enough to have a fire place – use it – your neighbors will hate you!
Layers – Warmer weather is great, but because
you are wearing so little there are only so many ways you can express yourself through your wardrobe. Not true in winter. You get jerseys over your shirts, tights over your legs and boots over your tights! There are jackets and vests and hoodies. There are cardigans and turtlenecks and shawls and ponchos! Pile it all on. These heavy items spend half the year taking up more than half your closet, you better put them to use.
Getting Fat (Well a kilo or two really won’t hurt) – We love going to the beach, but it takes so many hours going to the gym and dietary restrictions to get one’s body ready to display – no worry about that when you are covered in winter layers. So relax a little and have that extra piece of chocolate. Movie Season – This time of year is perfect for snuggling on the couch with a blanket, a bowl of popcorn, mug of milo and someone special – watching a movie. @Garsfontein
W
Coastal Holiday – what better time to head to the coast? I know we are trying to celebrate the coldest months of the year right now, but in all honesty, the best thing about it is when you get to leave for a brief spell. The July holiday is the perfect time to head to the coast and invade the beaches – the sun is milder and burning this time of the year is less and the coastal locals hide away as it is winter for them too (not nearly as cold as for us). So what do you most like about winter? Send us your comments: featzmags@gmail.com

The Bloodhound The bloodhound is a member of a group of dogs that hunt by using the scent of what they are hunting. The breed was originally used in Europe during medieval times to trail deer and boar. Today bloodhounds are often used by police departments as man trailers. They are also used for search and rescue companies.
When training a bloodhound he will be sensitive to correction or kindness, but
Description The color of a bloodhound can be red, black and tan or liver and tan. Often the dark colors will be interspersed with mixtures of lighter colors such as gray, brown, white, and black. The coat of the bloodhound is loose and thin. It hangs in loose folds around the head and the neck. The bloodhound is known for its long pendulous ears. The ears help the dog’s sense of smell by funneling up the smells from the ground to the nose and keeping it there. History The first reference of the bloodhound comes from Sir Humphrey who wrote a poem that mentioned a dog that was called a bloodhound who was a careful hunter. From the poem it can be deducted that the bloodhound name was quite familiar in English language. It comes from the fact that the dog was an aristocratic breed that was kept by abbots and noblemen, thus it was considered a “blooded” hound. The early hounds were called St. Hubert hounds and they were bred by monks living at St. Hubert’s Abbey. These dogs were the bloodhounds of today’s ancestors. Francois Hubert, who lived from 656 to 727, made it his life’s work to breed dogs that could follow trails, whether they are cold or old. This was an occupation that he kept up even after he retired to the monastery upon the passing of his wife.
will want to do things his own way. Bloodhounds are great at sniffing out trails, making them a great hunting companion. However, they do not make a good watchdog as they genuinely love people.
Grooming
Height, Weight
You should plan on brushing your bloodhound at least once a week. The breed will shed once a year and during this time a shedding blade can be used in order to remove the extra hair. It is important to check his wrinkles regularly in order to prevent bacterial infections. You should wipe them using a damp washcloth and then make sure that you dry them completely. You should wipe down the hanging part of his upper lip after each meal.
The male bloodhound reaches a height of around 64 to 69 cm. and will weigh between 40 to 50 kgs. Female bloodhounds are typically a bit shorter reaching heights between 59 to 64 cm. and weighing 36 to 45 kgs.
Temperament The personality of a bloodhound is somewhat contradictory. These dogs are stubborn, but docile, and determined, yet they are not quarrelsome. Bloodhounds tend to be quite affectionate as well.
Life Expectancy The life expectancy of a bloodhound is between 6 to 10 years.

Environmental 12 Ways to Save Power We all have our pre-paid electricity meters up and running and I am sure that most of you have noticed that electricity is costing you more than it used to. The news that we will be paying increased rates due to the peak period (June, July, and August) has us up in arms –but in all honesty what can we do about it? Here are 12 ways to reduce electricity usage and keep your bills down
6. Insulate your roof – An insulated ceiling makes a big difference to your power bills. If you already have insulation installed, check that it is properly installed. 7. Stop standby power waste – Did you know your phone charger is using energy even when you phone is not attached? Up to 10% of your electricity could be used by gadgets and appliances that are on standby. 8. Save energy in the kitchen - Thaw frozen food in your fridge to reduce cooking time. When you are cooking use the microwave when you can – it uses much less energy than the oven. If you use the stove, keep lids on your pots to reduce cooking time. Use the economy cycle on your dishwasher and only run it when it is full.
1. Wear the right clothes - Dress for the temperature, layering clothes and wearing wool helps keep you warm in winter and means you can turn the heater down. 2. Shut Doors and Close Curtains – Heating or cooling the whole house can be expensive. Where possible shut door to areas you are not using and only heat or cool rooms you spend most of your time in. Make sure that your curtains or blinds seal your windows properly, and keep your curtains closed at night, and during the day when it is very hot. Block draughts around doors and windows to stop air leaking out or in.
9. Use energy-efficient light globes – Replace old incandescent and halogen globes with energy-efficient globes. Energy-efficient globes save power and last longer. Turn lights off when you are not using them. 10. Turn geyser temperature down to 60 degree Celsius – maintaining the temperature at 60 degrees uses less electricity than maintaining a temperature of 70 degrees. This works better when the geyser is insulated.
3. Turn heaters and coolers off when you don’t need them – Turn off when you leave the room, or go to bed. Make sure your heating and cooling is turned off when you leave the house.
11. Reduce pool pump operating hours to the minimum of 6 hours a day. Clean filters regularly and consider a pool cover and turn off the pump at times in winter.
4. Wash clothes using cold water – using the shortest appropriate washing cycle and wait until you have a full load. 5. Run your fridge efficiently – Your fridge is always on, making it one of your most expensive appliances. Make sure the door seal is tight and free from gaps so cold air can’t escape. An ideal fridge temperature is 4 to 5 degrees and an ideal freezer temperature is minus 15 to minus 18 degrees Celsius. If you have a second fridge or freezer, only turn it on when you need it.

12. Install a solar water heater – this can save the most electricity of all. It typically saves about two thirds of water heating costs, but this varies and it should be installed with a timer for the best possible saving.

Medical Moments from the Cookie Jar:
It was 19 years ago that my dear friend and colleague Rob and I were wondering through the sun-dappled summer grounds of academia; both medical students with dreams of making a difference and helping humanity. He, having studied engineering first, had visions of how robotics and computers could be harnessed to save lives and heal infirmities in a fluid interface of tissue and mechanics. A dream so implausible, so unthinkable at that time. It took a social media post, emotional and heartrending, of a blind mother-to-be who’s remarkable doctor 3D-printed her baby’s image from the ultrasound for her to ‘meet’*, for this technophobic trauma doctor to jump down the rabbit hole into the reality of Rob’s imagined world. Three dimensional (3D) printing entails manufacturing objects by fusion of materials deposited into controlled layers. Materials which can be used are unlimited, including plastics, metals, ceramics, powders, liquids and now, even living cells. A 3-dimensional image is defined by computer-aided design, and may be modeled from radiographic imaging such as X-rays, CT- and MRIscans. 3D printers follow instruction laying down the foundation of the object along the x-y plane after which, layer by layer, the print-head moves long the z-axis to build the object vertically. For the ‘tech@Garsfontein
W
heads’, there are three main types of 3D-printers: selective laser sintering which use powdered materials; thermal inkjet printing which uses noncontact thermal, electromagnetic or piezoelectric technology to drop ‘ink’ (any desirable material) to form the object; and fused deposition modeling using heated beads of plastic. It was Charles Hull who invented 3D printing in the early 1980’s, with its application primarily in industry. It wasn’t until recently that 3D printing applications in the medical field ushered in a future of uncountable possibilities. Recreation of individual pathology and anatomy allows for surgical simulation and interventional planning before cutting the patient; medical students may no longer need cadavers in their training; and individualized prosthetics, casts and implants are a reality. Customized surgical implements may be designed and printed for individual patient’s needs, all in a bid to decrease operating and recovery time, and increase the success of surgery. As 3D printing is relatively cheap, it can increase cost effectiveness of limited-production implants for dental, facial, skull and spinal disorders. Pharmaceuticals and medication may be reformulated using 3D printing to promote specific controlled release preparations, individualization of dosing and

Impossible possibilities in a 3D wonderland implantable antibiotic devices for infections difficult to penetrate by blood-born antibiotics (like bone infections). Although many exciting medical advances have already been facilitated by this technology, the most thrilling potential exists in the ideal of creating organs for transplant. This concept is still in its infancy and entails isolation of stem cells which, after differentiating under the correct stimuli into the cells of the organ of interest, are bio-printed into a designed lattice together with blood vessel cells, nerve cells and support medium. To date, tissue engineering has been limited because although they are able to differentiate stem cells and grow them, scientists have been unable to correctly supply this new tissue with blood vessels. The new tissue thus dies due to lack of nutrients brought to each cell, and accumulation of the metabolic waste products. 3D printing has the potential to overcome these problems with precise cell placements and concentrations, as well as accurate 3D designs of vascular networks. Success stories to date include replacements of knee cartilage (meniscus), heart valves, vertebral discs and ears.
‘Change your thoughts and you can change your world’. ‘Sometimes I believe as many as six different impossible things before breakfast’ The Queen in Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carrol. It is the people who can dream things, and stand by them no matter how the common crowd decries them, that change the future of our world. BIOLIFE HEALTH AND FITNESS CENTRE
Time, money, patience and much research is still needed for organ printing to become a viable reality; but I have no doubt it will. Some predict that within the next 20 years we shall see the first fully functional printed heart! And of course, in the more immediate future, a quagmire of legal issues, copyrighting battles, patent laws and legislation blueprints to prevent criminal misuse of this technologies must be dealt with (as you can imagine, functional plastic guns and magazines, master keys and ATM skimmers are just a few examples). Not every patient is a success story; we cannot cure or save everyone. But there are those whose lives we change; patients who breathe again after breath had ceased, who smile once more despite the odds and those who hug their loved ones when they should never have moved again. It is those triumphs that keep us where we are, that make the long hours of grueling sacrifice worth every second. That makes me proud to belong to this profession. Technology like this adds to the odds of those victories. And all these years later, I realize that it is in these dreams and visions of people like Rob that the impossible becomes possible. In the words of Norman Peale: @Garsfontein

far less likely to talk your price down if you have priced it correctly from the start. Buyers purchase by comparison and if a property is prices way above similar competing properties, buyers will either discard the idea of making an offer at all or make an offer far below what the property is worth.
Accurate Pricing
This is no different in the property market. During the boom times, demand for property exploded, there was not enough supply for good quality homes which resulted in sellers getting significantly more for their property. And then the worst economic recession in 30 years struck. So what does this mean for the property industry and those looking to sell in current market conditions?
An over-priced property will inevitably stay on the market for too long. It is advertised over and over and over and soon becomes over-exposed, and still not sold. The logical next step is either for the seller to reduce the asking price over a period of time, or hold out until the market changes or inflation catches up and the inherent value of the property increases – which is not going to happen quickly by any stretch of the imagination. As time passes by, a buyer will assume that the Seller is now desperate and again the Seller is faced with low offers. All that time, effort, expense, emotion and in some cases inconvenience, only to reduce the price and start the process all over again!
With global economic pressures, the National Credit Act and the stringent lending criteria of financial institutions, it is significantly harder today for an individual to acquire property finance – the direct result of this is that while there has been evidence of many willing buyers, the number of able buyers has decreased significantly, directly impacting on demand.
My steamy
At the same time, higher costs of living, increases in costs such as electricity and growing household running costs in particular have resulted in some homeowners no longer being able to afford their properties – resulting in an increase in available properties on the market. This has created an environment where there is an abundance of properties for sale but a much smaller pool of “qualified buyers”.
will get your home sold at a hot price this winter. Don’t be left out in the cold; get in touch with your dedicated and knowledgeable property advisor, for an honest, no obligation, valuation of your home
In many instances, homeowners looking to make an unreasonable profit who fight against the better recommendation of their agent and try to inflate the asking price for their property will struggle to sell their properties in an increasingly competitive environment where qualified buyers really are spoilt for choice. Getting the price right on your property is the result of years of experience on the part of your agent and a solid understanding of the market conditions generally as well as specific to the area. A property that is correctly priced and actively marketed by your agent will spend less time on the market and will attract the right buyer. They are also @Garsfontein

AMERICAN CANDY What will you do on the weekends
It’ll rot your teeth
When your best friends Become your dead friends? From all the sugar And all the sweetness
Sometimes I feel as though I’m going mad when I get a touch of saccharine on my lips
This little sweet tooth
I hate the taste on my tongue too damn sweet
It is your weakness
I don’t fancy American candy, American candy
They’ve got American candy
They’ve got American candy
You’re sweet and sate, so sedated
You’re sweet and sate, so sedated
For the American kids
For the American kids
You’re hooked and baited, annihilated
You’re hooked and baited, annihilated
Even if you wanted to
Even if you wanted to
You couldn’t stop it’s just so sweet
You couldn’t stop it’s just so sweet
But this American candy
But this American candy
It’ll rot your teeth
It’ll rot your teeth until your gums they bleed
Try to think back to a time When you loved what you loved because you loved it Before the sugar And all the sweetness Filled up your lungs now It’s all you breathe in
I hate the taste on my tongue too damn sweet I don’t fancy American candy, American candy You’re sweet and sated baby I hate the taste on my tongue too damn sweet I don’t fancy American candy
They’ve got American candy You’re sweet and sate, so sedated For the American kids You’re hooked and baited, annihilated Even if you wanted to You couldn’t stop it’s just so sweet But this American candy

AM I WITH AN ABUSER?
Compiled by Lt Col Gerber
Often we don’t even realize that we are or becoming involved in a relationship that is or have the potential to become violent and destructive. It is not always possible to “see” an abuser before-hand, prior to being trapped in the spider-web of abuse, lies and pain, BUT there are warning signs. The website “An Abusive, Rape and Domestic Violence Aid and Resource Collection” characterizes an abuser as follows: • Often has a low self-esteem: A lot of abusers appear to be tough, strong and confident, but more than often suffer from low self-esteem. They are emotionally “needy” and have become dependent on their partner. The thought of losing that partner feels threatening and thus behaviours of controlling and jealousy follow. • Are excessively jealous: Abusers often say that jealousy is a sign of love, but in reality, it’s a sign of possessiveness and lack of trust. In a healthy relationship, the partners trust each other. Not every twinge of jealousy is a sign of doom to come, but when that jealousy becomes a negative aspect or a disruptive force in a relationship, red flags need to be going up. • Display controlling behaviour: Often at the beginning, an abuser will say that the controlling behaviour is because they are concerned for your safety. Abusers will be angry if you are “late” coming back from the store or an appointment; you might be questioned closely about where you went, who you talked to. As this behaviour gets worse, the abuser may not let you make personal decisions about the house, finances, your clothing, or going to church. • Have unrealistic expectations or demands: Abusive people often expect their partner to meet ALL of their needs. The person must be the perfect partner, lover and friend. They say things like “if you really love me, I’m all you need and you’re all I need”. They may expect you to take care of everything for them; emotionally, physically and sometimes economically.

• Use isolation to keep you centred on them: Frequently, an abusive person tries to cut the partner off from all resources. If you have friends, you are “cheap” or “cheating”. If you are close to your family, you are “tied to the apron strings”. Abusers will accuse people who are supportive of causing trouble. They can gradually isolate you from all of your friends. They may not let you use a car (or have one that is reliable) and may try to keep you from working. Sometimes this process can take years and then suddenly a victim looks up and realizes that they’ve been moved across the country, away from family, friends and a support system and without a job or resources of their own - making them completely isolated and totally dependent on the abuser. • Believe in male authority and the stereotyped masculine role in the family: Abusers are often obsessive about appearing to the “the man of the house” and they tend to hold very high and rigid rules about how they are treated - often leading them to feel the need to dominate and control and to expect their word and their needs to be catered to at all times, including in the bedroom. They will often tell you that no one else would want you or that you are nothing without them. They will remind you of their “provider role” everything they have done for you...thus using guilt and convoluted “logic” to pressure you into submissive behaviours. • Use of force during sex: Abusive partners may show little concern about whether you want to have sex and use sulking or anger to manipulate you into giving in to sex. They may start having sex with you while you are sleeping, or demand sex even when you are ill or tired. They may want to “make up” by having sex after they have just been physically or verbally abusive to you. • Have poor communication skills: Some people talk with their words, while others talk with their actions (fists). Abusers typically have trouble with discussing “feelings”, especially very strong ones

Remember You Can Stop Domestic Violence! like anger or frustration. Without the skills or selfpermission to express themselves in constructive ways (ways that feels uncomfortable or where they feel inadequate), they can lash out with violence. • Use negative behaviours to cope with stress: Studies suggest that abusers, in general, have a higher incident of substance abuse than nonabusers. It doesn’t mean that drug or alcohol causes the abuse, but that it lowers inhibitions making an already frustrated and violence-prone person more likely to fall back on violence as a crutch, especially when confronted with their lack of communication skills and feelings of inadequacy.
• Exhibit cruelty to animals or children: This is a person who punishes animals brutally or is insensitive to their pain. They may expect children to be capable of things beyond their ability. They may tease children until they cry. They may be very critical of other people’s children, especially any children you bring in from a previous relationship. An abusive partner may punish children to get even with you.
SOUNDS FAMILIAR? GET OUT!
• Blame others for their actions: Commonly, abusers use the actions of others as excuses for their own behaviour. They blame the person who made them angry. How often have victims heard “why did you make me do that”? If your partner is chronically unemployed, someone is always doing them wrong or is out to get them. They may make mistakes and then blame you for upsetting them so that they can’t concentrate on their work. Abusers see themselves as the “victim” in the relationship and do not take responsibility for their own feelings or behaviours. • Are prone to hypersensitivity: Abusers are easily insulted and may take the slightest setback as a personal attack. They will rant and rave about the injustice of things that are really just a part of living, such as having to get up for work, getting a traffic ticket, or being asked to help with chores. • Present dual personalities: Many abusers are excellent actors. They may appear to function well at work, with friends and family, etc. Sometimes only the victim is aware of the true “nature of the beast”. Often friends and family of the victim will go on and on about “what a great partner you’ve got there” - because the abuser has successfully hidden their violence at home.
