Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Back to School is here! This summer went by way too fast! This year my oldest is starting 7th grade. Yes, I survived my first year of middle school (and a weird one with a mix of virtual and in-person). My son is heading into 4th grade. You would think I have the "Back to School" thing down pat, but I still benefit from tips and pointers to get myself and the kids set for the upcoming year. I can't believe over a year later, we are still dealing with COVID-19 and the havoc it wrecks on the beginning of school year. Check out these two articles that will help you prepare. Local therapist Whitney Cherner, LCSW has bestowed us with some of her "warrior wisdom" on page 22 to get through back to school. She has provided some tips to help calm nerves, especially if your child is out of practice with in-person social interaction from being virtual last year. In an effort to spread expert information, we have compiled some expert tips from the CDC (pg. 12) on how to keep your kids as germ and virusfree as possible. Due to the Delta variant, COVID cases are on the rise, so it is crucial to keep informed and make responsible decisions for your family. Back to school also means the return to homework. Ugh, dreaded homework time. On page 8, Professor Haas gives you tips on determining your child's learning style so you can better assist with their learning process, and on page 18, you can read on how to set your child up for homework success in your home. The start of this school year will definitely look different than last year! I can't wait to see everyone's first-day photos (and this time not in our PJs). Happy Parenting,

Understanding Your Kids’ Learning Styles BY TANNI HAAS, PH.D.
As your kids head back to school, one of your top priorities, as a parent, is to help them with their homework. But how do you best do that? To be sure they truly understand the material, it’s useful to know how they learn. Researchers have discovered that there are four major learning styles: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. Below are brief descriptions of each learning style and how you can tailor your homework help.
folders. If they have a hard time understanding something, show them how it’s done instead of telling them how to do it. Since visual learners often get distracted from too many visual stimuli, it’s important to keep their study space neat and clutter-free.

A sign that How They Learn: Visual learners process new your kids might be auditory learners is that they information by seeing it. orally. Since auditory learners are highly sensitive to auditory stimuli, have classical or instrumental music playing in the background when they study. Reading/Writing Learners How They Learn: Some kids process new information by reading or writing about it. A sign that your kids might be reading/writing learners is that they enjoy keeping a journal or writing creative stories. At school, reading/writing learners are especially good at taking notes from their textbooks and from what the teachers are writing down on the blackboard. How To Help With Homework: Have your kids write down what they’re supposed to learn in an organized way. Have them create detailed study notes, organized nicely into sections with proper headings. Get them to look up information online and in reference material as they work. Since reading and writing require focus, make sure their study space is nice and quiet.
Kinesthetic Learners How They Learn: Kinesthetic learners process new information through hands-on activities that allow them to touch and manipulate objects. A sign that your kids might be kinesthetic learners is that they love creating new things with building blocks or taking things apart to see how they work. At school, kinesthetic learners especially enjoy tactile scientific experiments. How To Help With Homework: Have your kids study with physical objects. This can be using coins to learn math, or cutting letters to practice spelling. Since touch and movement help kinesthetic learners process new information, encourage them to stretch regularly or move when they study. Back to School Planning for In-Person Classes Update: At the time of press - the Interim Palm Beach School Superintendent has not decided if Palm Beach County Public Schools will open with a mask mandate or masking optional. Despite a rise in cases, the governor of Florida has signed an executive order banning a mask mandate. The CDC has issued the following statement: Given new evidence on the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant, CDC has updated the guidance for fully vaccinated people. CDC recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. Children should return to full-time in-person learning with layered prevention strategies in place. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a similar statement. Here are some helpful tips and check list. PB Parenting are not medical experts, this information was complied as concerned parents trying our best to share expert information from the CDC and other reliable sources. settings, multiple studies have shown that transmission rates within school settings, when multiple prevention strategies are in place, are typically lower than – or similar to – community transmission levels. Checklist: Planning for In-Person Classes Check in with your child each morning for signs of illness. If your child has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher, they should not go to school. Make sure your child does not have a sore throat or other signs of illness, like a cough, diarrhea, severe headache, vomiting, or body aches. If your child has had close contact to a COVID-19 case, they should not go to school. Follow guidance on what to do when someone has known exposure (https://www.cdc.gov/ coronavirus/2019-ncov/php/public-healthrecommendations.html) Identify your school point person(s) to contact if your child gets sick. Be familiar with local COVID-19 testing sites in the event you or your child develops symptoms. These may include sites with free testing available. Make sure your child is up-to-date with all recommended vaccines, including for flu. All school-aged children should get an influenza flu vaccine every season, with rare exceptions. This is especially important this year because we do not yet know if being sick with COVID-19 at the same time as the flu will result in more severe illness. Review and practice proper hand washing techniques at home, especially before and after eating, sneezing, coughing, and adjusting a face cover. Make hand washing fun and explain to your child why it’s important. Be familiar with how your school will make water available during the day. Consider packing a water bottle. Develop daily routines before and after school—for example, things to pack for school in the morning (like hand sanitizer and an additional (back up) cloth face covering) and

things to do when you return home (like washing hands immediately and washing worn cloth face coverings). Talk to your child about precautions to take at school. Children may be advised to: Wash and sanitize their hands more often. • Keep physical distance from other students • Wear a cloth face covering. • Avoid sharing objects with other students, including water bottles, devices, writing instruments, and books. • Use hand sanitizer (that contains at least 60% alcohol.) Make sure you’re using a safe product. FDA recalled products that contain toxic methanol. Monitor how they feel and tell an adult if they are not feeling well. Make sure your information is current at school, including emergency contacts and individuals authorized to pick up your child(ren) from school. Helping Your Gradeschooler With Homework During grade school, kids start getting homework for the first time to reinforce classroom learning and help them practice important study skills. By doing homework, kids learn how to: • read and follow directions independently • manage and budget time (for long-term assignments like book reports) • complete work neatly and best of their ability It also helps them develop a sense of responsibility, pride in a job well done, and a work ethic that will benefit them well beyond the classroom. Parents can give kids lots of homework help, primarily by making homework a priority and helping them develop good study habits.
available through your Internet service provider (ISP), and software that blocks and filters inappropriate material. Find out which sites your kids' teachers recommend and bookmark them for easy access. A Parent's Supporting Role: When it comes to homework, be there to offer support and guidance, answer questions, help interpret instructions, and review the completed work. But resist the urge to provide the right answers or complete assignments. Focus on helping kids develop the problem-solving skills they'll need to get through this assignment and any others, and offer your encouragement as they do. They'll develop confidence and a love of learning from doing it themselves.

guide them back to the homework with fresh focus and energy. • Instill organization skills. No one is born with great organizational skills — they're learned and practiced over time. Most kids first encounter multiple teachers and classrooms in middle school, when organization becomes a key to succeeding. Teach your child how to use a calendar or planner to help get organized. • Apply school to the "real world." Talk about how what they're learning now applies outside the classroom, such as the importance of meeting deadlines — just like adults in the work world — or how the topics in history class relate to what's happening in today's news. Homework Problems: Especially as kids get older, homework can really start to add up and become harder to manage. These strategies can help: • Be there. You don't have to hover at homework time, but be around in case you're needed. If your son is frazzled by math problems he's been
trying to solve for hours, for instance, suggest he take a break, maybe by shooting some hoops with you. A fresh mind may be all he needed, but when it's time to return to homework, ask how you can help. • Be in touch with teachers. Keep in good contact with the teachers throughout the school year to stay aware of your child's progress, especially if your child is struggling. Don't miss conferences and maintain an ongoing dialogue. Teachers can tell you what happens in the classroom and how to help your child succeed. You also can ask to be kept in the loop about quizzes, tests, and projects. • Don't forget the study skills. Study skills often aren't stressed in schools. When you're helping your child study for a test, suggest some effective study strategies, such as using flashcards, or taking notes and underlining while reading. • Encourage kids to reach out. Most teachers

are available for extra help before or after school, and also might be able to recommend other resources. Praise your kids for their hard work and effort. Don't wait for report cards to find out that there are problems at school. The sooner you intervene, the sooner you can help your child get back on track. When Kids Struggle With Homework: Consistent complaints about homework or ongoing struggles with assignments could indicate a problem. In some cases, kids simply need to learn and practice better study habits. Be sure your kids are writing down assignments correctly and encourage them to keep a daily homework notebook, which can help both kids and parents know exactly what assignments are due and when. If a particular assignment is giving your child more trouble than others, send a note to the teacher. But when a kid consistently has a hard time understanding or completing homework, broader

issues (such as learning disabilities, ADHD, or vision or hearing difficulties) might be interfering with academic progress. By reviewing homework with your child and talking to your child's teacher, you can identify any learning problems and tackle them early on. Laying the Foundation: The key to truly helping kids with homework is to know when to step in. Make sure your kids know that you're available if there's a snag, but that it's important to work independently. Be a good example by showing your own love of learning. While your child does homework, do your own — read books; write letters, lists, and emails; use math skills to calculate expenses or balance the checkbook. By showing that learning remains important — even fun — once school's over, you'll help your kids understand that building knowledge is something to enjoy throughout life. © 1995- 2021. Wisdom Preparing for Back to School BY WHITNEY CHERNER, LCSW
I like the concept of “back to school.” I really do. It’s probably because I am a big fan of new beginnings and all that it entails, like new schedules, new friends, and new opportunities. To me, the fact that kids get to do this every year while in school is one of the great gifts of well, just being a kid. As parents, we often put time and effort into prepping our kids for “back to school.” We order uniforms, pick out just the right backpack, and visit the dreaded school supply shopping section at our Target. This a yearly ritual…except last year when the pandemic changed all of that. So, for parents and students alike, back to school prep is looking a little different. I woke up at 3 am the other morning in a panic that I had not yet ordered my son (who shot up 5 inches over the summer) new uniforms. I am happy to self-disclose that I am out of practice and not quite on it. I feel as if I am walking out of a dark movie theater into the brightly lit lobby, blinking furiously as I try to get my bearings. So, if I am the adult in the room and I am feeling this way, how are our kids feeling? 22 August 2021| PB Parenting |
Chances are they are facing a wide range of emotions. From being out of practice with inperson social interactions to being required to physically attend school to those in high school having to get up earlier, kids are grappling with new stresses that pre-pandemic weren’t associated with back to school. So, how can we all prepare for the best school year ever? 1. Talk about it. Develop a “let’s be real” zone where kids and parents alike can share how they are feeling. The point of this zone is not to problem solve, but rather to share and validate feelings. This is a good opportunity to just listen and allow everyone to own their feelings. 2. Normalize it. There is a lot of comfort in knowing that we are not the only ones who feel this way. Letting our kids and ourselves know that we are not alone in our feelings is powerful stuff. I love running into other mothers who are overwhelmed and doing the best that they can because I can relate. Chances are that your sixth grader will find it comforting to be assured that most of the other sixth graders are also worried about getting lost on their first day of school.
3. Focus on strengths. Remind your child (and yourself ) that they have gotten through hard, scary things before. Past behavior predicts future behavior, so if we have been successful at something in the past chances are we can do that again. Use this knowledge to propel you and your child forward. 4. If possible, develop a loose plan. I say loose because life happens and part of our job as parents is growing people who can pivot and be resourceful when plans fall apart. So, your child can plan to meet their best friend in the cafeteria once they get off the bus. But if their bus is late, they are going to have to go with Plan B.

Attend Orientation/Meet the Teacher - Most elementary schools have meet the teacher on Friday, August 6th or Monday August 9. Please check with your childs school. 2. Discuss your morning routine - You might have been enjoying the easier carefree days of summer. Now it is the time to hold some rehearsals in preparation for the big day. 3. Create a morning to-do list - Speaking of mornings, a list might be helpful - Create each child a list of things they need to do in the morning will help keep your mornings running smoothly. TRAVELS & Places to go Labor Day travel: Tampa/St. Pete Downtown St. Pete
PHOTOS AND STORY BY FELONICE MERRIMAN
Do you know that we have a four-day weekend coming up? Check the Palm Beach County School Calendar. This year, Rosh Hashanah falls during labor day (It starts Monday evening, there is no school Tuesday). This extended break is a perfect time to get in a bit of a getaway. A quick trip that requires no airport travel is a quick drive across the state to Tampa/St. Pete area. When I want to skip busy Orlando, I drive over enjoy the west side of Florida.
veterinary team have treated over 400 manatees, with more than 230 of those reintroduced into Florida waters. Also, a great money-saving tip, if you are a member of the Palm Beach Zoo, you get 50% off admission with your Zoo membership card! (The Florida Aquarium too!)

The building dates back to 1910 and was once The area is a very family-friendly destination with the storage and maintenance facility for Tampa lots to do. The area offers many attractions such as Electric streetcars. They have now created a fun The Florida Aquarium, The Zoo at Lowry Park, Glazer food hall, marketplace, and event space. There is Children's Museum, Busch Gardens theme park, lots of yard space for the kids to run around, and and the Salvador Dali Art Museum, and more. Sunset outside Armature Works The Zoo at Lowry Park is a world-class zoo. Located on 24 acres, there is a lot to explore. You can spend a whole day there. We are big manatee fans. My favorite part is ZooTampa's Manatee Critical Care Center. The Center is the first acute care facility of its kind specifically dedicated to critical care for wild manatees. you can even soak in a beautiful sunset and maybe even an adult beverage. The Riverwalk runs right in front and is perfect for an afterdinner stroll.
Just south of Tampa is St. Petersburg; you could visit both on the same weekend or make separate trips. I love the quieter artsy vibe of St. Pete. The Salvador Dali Museum is one of my favorite art museums in the country dedicated to the works of Dali. It is worth a visit if you are a fan and love surrealism - the audio tour is excellently narrated and gives you insight into Dali and his life. Due to COVID-19, they are only doing advanced tickets and timed entry and must be reserved online. Also located in Downtown St. Pete is the new revitalized St. Pete Pier. Enjoy waterfront dining, ice
cream, or stroll and shop through the local artisan marketplace. The kids can cool off at the splash pad or burn some energy at the playground. Another great spot to take the kids along the pier is one of the newest attractions, the Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center. Kids will love this handson experience and learn more about the Tampa Bay estuary. And what is Labor Day without going on a boat? The Center also offers relaxing daily Eco-Tour of Tampa Bay on their brand new 45' USCG-certified catamaran. The tour is led by their professional education team, where they will identify and track local species that you can see up close from the comfort of your seat. You will participate in scientific recording and tracking of numerous species, including local birds, dolphins, and manatees. And, of course, there are beautiful Gulf Coast Beaches to enjoy as well. Safe Travels, and make sure to take some time to relax as well!
