Letter From The Publisher Greetings, Pat yourself on the back, Moms and Dads. We survived almost a month of back to school. Now that you have settled into a school routine, you might be looking for an activity for your child after school or on the weekends. Check out page 24 for our Enrichment Guide for all types of activities for children with various interests and needs. This guide is also available year-round on our website - www.pbparenting.com. Almost ten years ago, I was pregnant with my son, and I am actually kind of jealous of what is available to new moms to be now! From new baby gear to beautiful Lilly Pulitzer birthing suites at Good Samaritan, none of that was around when I had my son. It almost makes me want to have a baby again... Ok, not quite because I do enjoy sleeping through the night now. Speaking of not sleeping through the night - Rachel Da Silva, local maternity nurse and baby expert from Mommy Did You Know, has written a great article on how to get through those rough nights with a newborn. It may have been over a decade for me, but I still remember them well. I wish I had this information then. Thank you to all the moms and babies, toddlers in strollers that came out to the Stroller Daze event at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium. It was so lovely to meet you all — what a fun morning. Keep an eye out for our next date in Spring 2022. In the meantime, connect with us online in Palm Beach County Moms or our co-ed group Palm Beach County Parents to stay up to date on all the happens and meet and chat with other local parents. Happy Parenting,

How to Overcome Rough Nights with a Newborn BY RACHEL DA SILVA Typically, newborns wake up to eat every 2-3 hours and it can be challenging to find time to rest in between. However, there are a few ways to help get a little more sleep during those first few months. Although it is recommended to wait to sleep train until your baby is a few months old, you can start “sleep cues” from the time your baby is born. These can set the stage for healthy sleep habits that will last them for the rest of their lives. Tip #1: Age-Appropriate Daytime Schedule My first recommendation is always to have an age-appropriate daytime schedule. Make sure your baby has stimulation during the day and plenty of naps. As a rule of thumb, if your baby has been up for about an hour, it is time to sleep again! As a newborn, your baby might be sleepy during the day and then wake up at night. To change this schedule, the best thing you can do is try to wake up the baby if it has been too long. Do not skip feedings during the day or you will have to make up for it at night. The 8 September 2021| PB Parenting |
best way to wake your baby is by taking off the clothes and changing the diaper. If the baby still needs stimulations try an infant massage and some skin to skin time. Tip #2: Set the Environment for Sleep Next is to create an environment for sleep. Have a safe crib that is free of clutter and distractions. It is also a good idea to incorporate sleep cues into your bedtime routine. These include songs, night lights, stories, and behaviors that the baby will associate with sleep. Make sure to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) that you avoid the use of loose blankets and items in the crib. The baby should be alone in the crib on a hard and flat surface. This will also help you sleep by knowing that your baby is safe and away from harm at night. Tip #3: Encourage Independence My third recommendation is to try to encourage your baby to fall asleep independently. The best time to put your baby

to sleep is when they are drowsy but awake. Slowly they will learn how to self-sooth and sleep independently. One good rule of thumb is to try to put them down to settle when you can still see the whites of their eyes. Your baby should know where they are when they fall asleep. This way, if they wake up at night they will not be frightened wondering where they are. Tip #4: Have Adequate Daytime Feeding Lastly and highly overlooked, is to have adequate daytime feedings. Missed feedings during the day often means making up for it at night! Making sure your baby is eating well during the day can save you a lot of sleepless nights! 25 Things to Do Before Your Baby is Born 9 months will be here before you know it! And your little newborn will be in your arms! Here are 25 more things to cross off your to-do list. Pack your hospital bag. Take a tour and pre-register with your hospital. (possibly virtual). Make a birth plan. Get a crib and set up your nursery. Pre-wash baby’s clothes. Attend Childbirth and Education classes (possibly virtually). Choose your baby’s names. Pick a birth announcement, design it and gather addresses. Start researching breast pumps and call your insurance to find out how much they will cover. Use your crockpot and make some freezer meals to reheat after the baby arrives.

Preparing Your Child for a New Sibling Preparing Kids The arrival of a new baby can bring many changes to a family. Parents spend a lot of energy on preparations, and after the baby arrives, much of the family’s attention involves caring for the newborn.
from?” Despite how it sounds, the child isn’t asking you to explain sex but probably wants to know where, literally, they come from. It may be enough to explain: “The baby comes from the uterus, which is inside the mother’s belly.” A child who wants to know more will ask.

baby so that they don’t feel left out.
Consider letting your child visit you in the hospital as soon as possible after the baby is born, ideally when no other visitors are around — this helps reinforce the birth as an intimate family event.
Many kids want to help take care of a new baby. Though that “help” may mean that each task takes longer, it can give an older child a chance to interact with the baby in a positive way. Depending on their age, a big brother or sister may want to entertain the baby during a diaper change, help push the carriage, talk to the baby, or help dress, bathe, or burp the baby.
Try to keep routines as regular as possible in the days and weeks around the baby’s arrival. If you plan to make any room shifts to accommodate the baby, do it a few weeks before your due date. If your child is approaching a major milestone, like potty training or moving from a crib to a bed, try to make those changes well before your due date or put them off until after the baby has been home for a while.
If your child expresses no interest in the baby, don’t be alarmed and don’t force it. It can take time. Some occasions, like breastfeeding, excludes older kids. For these times, try to have toys on hand so that you can feed the baby without being interrupted or worrying about an older child feeling left out.
Bringing the New Baby Home Once the baby is home, you can help your other Take advantage of chances for one-on-one kids adjust to the changes. Include them as much time with older kids. Spend time together while as possible in the daily activities involving the the baby is sleeping and, if possible, set aside

time each day for older kids to get one parent’s undivided attention. Knowing that there’s special time just for them may help ease any resentment or anger about the new baby.
Dealing With Feelings With all of the changes that a new baby can bring, some older kids might struggle as they try to adjust.
Also remind relatives and friends that your older child might want to talk about something other than the new baby. If relatives or friends ask how they can help, suggest a fun activity or something special for the older child.
Encourage older kids to talk about their feelings about the new baby. If a child cannot express those feelings, don’t be surprised if he or she tests limits or reverts to speaking in baby talk.
Continue to send your older child to childcare or to school, if you’re able. It’s normal to feel guilty about sending your older child away since now you’re home with the new baby (and if you’re home, you might feel that everyone should be). But keeping normal routines is helpful for siblings. And this time can give you precious one-on-one time with the baby that you might not otherwise have. When your older child comes home from childcare or school, plan for some quality family time.
If your child acts up, don’t bend the rules, but understand what feelings may be motivating that behavior. It could be a sign that your child needs more one-on-one time with you, but make it clear that although his or her feelings are important, they have to be expressed in appropriate ways. on Via Mizner, just off Worth Avenue in Palm Beach. Lilly Pulitzer’s business was a hit, but squeezing oranges, lemons, limes, and pink grapefruit made a mess of her clothes. Realizing that she needed a juice stand uniform, Lilly asked her dressmaker to design a dress that would camouflage the stains. The result? A comfortable sleeveless shift dress made of bright, colorful printed cotton in pink, green, yellow and orange. Although her customers liked Lilly’s juice, they loved her shift dresses. Soon Lilly was selling more shift dresses than juice, so she decided to stop squeezing and focus on designing and selling her “Lillys.” Lilly Pulitzer became a fashion sensation and a creator of authentic American resort wear as we know it. The brand recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and continues to create authentic printed styles straight from the in-house print design studio.

TRAVELS & Places to go Stress Less on Your Next Family Vacation 6 Tips For A Laid-Back Getaway Downtown St. Pete A vacation is all about getting away and taking a break from the pressures of daily life. Some smart planning and the use of handy travel apps can help ensure your next adventure is a stress-free success.
discovery package, or in New York City, you’ll be able to access the iconic and family-friendly exhibits at the Empire State Building. Know When Less is More: Overpacking may seem like a strategy for reducing stress, since you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way. However, many travelers find the opposite is true. Packing light means you’re more agile when it comes to transportation and have fewer things to keep track of or worry about losing. An added benefit: with fewer wardrobe options, you can focus your attention where it really belongs – enjoying your destination.
Create a Travel Buffer: When booking your trip, plan an extra day or two on the front and back ends of your travel itinerary. This provides you with optimal time to finalize preparations, organize your packing and avoid last-minute scrambles. On the return trip, the added day gives you some cushion so you don’t have to stress about getting back to work if there are travel delays. You’ll also have a chance to unpack, unwind and settle back into your home before diving back into your daily grind. Keep Plans Loose: A rigid agenda only causes Get Smart About Saving: One easy way to angst. The reality of travel is that you’re likely to, take the stress out of vacation planning is to use somehow or someway, get off schedule and fall digital resources to save time and money. An behind. The ripple effect can quickly throw off an option like a sightseeing pass from Go City offers entire day, so a better bet is to keep plans flexible. savings on attractions and activities. A single pass With Go City’s mobile-based passes and flexible grants access to multiple iconic landmarks and plan-as-you-go capabilities, travelers have the unmissable experiences in more than 25 cities freedom to set their own schedules. It's no problem across four continents. For example, in San Antonio if you decide to linger over breakfast on your visit you can take advantage of a Natural Bridge Caverns to Los Angeles; the whale watching adventure will 32 September 2021| PB Parenting |
be there when you’re ready. If you decide to make a stop at the beach on your San Diego getaway, no worries. You’ll still be able to scan your pass for kayaking later that day or even following days. Prioritize Sleep and Relaxing Activities: You may be tempted to make the most of every moment of your trip but allowing ample down time to rest and recharge helps keep everyone feeling fresh and ready to tackle each new activity with enthusiasm. Being tired takes the joy out of traveling, and it can lead to cranky meltdowns among the littlest travelers (and sometimes the bigger ones, too). That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to take a nap every single day, but you might consider alternating extra busy days with more laid-back activities so you don’t find yourself running on empty.
Have Contingency Plans: At home, things don’t always go according to plan, so you shouldn’t expect them to when you’re on the road. While planning for your trip, do some research on backup activities you can do if your original plans fall apart. If rain hampers your day at the amusement park, knowing you can easily access tickets to the indoor aquarium or family-friendly museum nearby can save the day. Use the same mindset when planning for your accommodations and meals. Overbooking and extended wait times won’t foil you if you have alternatives in mind. Discover more ways to do what you want, when you want on your stress-free vacation at GoCity.com. (Family Features)
