Summer contact lens care advice Summer is a time when many people use contact lenses, for flexibility, the freedom to play sports, choose the sunglasses they want, or to dress to impress at all the summer events. However, summer can be a tough time for contact lenses due to the heat and endless days at the pool or the beach, so we’ve asked Louise Stone, from Specsavers Opticas Calpe and Jávea for their advice on how to use contact lenses this summer. 1. Take care with air conditioning Air conditioning can dry out your eyes, making them feel itchy and irritated and this is a particular issue for contact lens wearers. Switch air conditioning off where possible and avoid fans and air jets pointed directly towards the eyes to control this. Eye drops can help keep your eyes hydrated if this is a problem for you over summer. 2. Remember to remove them before swimming It is tempting to just dive into the pool or sea on a hot summer’s day, but exposing your contact lenses to water is risky. This is because water is full of bacteria including an ameba called acanthamoeba. If this gets under your contact lens and multiplies it will irritate your eye and can cause a serious infection which can lead to permanent visual impairment or blindness. Of course this is rare, but it is important to take the risk seriously and remove contact lenses before swimming. If you swim a lot, it's worth investing in prescription swimming goggles to protect your eyes and maintain good vision. 3. Don’t forget your sunglasses A key benefit to contact lenses in summer months is that you don’t need prescription sunglasses, and you don’t have to keep switching between your normal glasses and sunglasses. However, most contact lenses don’t protect the eyes from the powerful UV rays at this time of the year, so it’s important to always wear good quality sunglasses with 100% UV protection whenever you’re out in the sun. Specsavers Opticas have just launched their new easyvision aquiane daily disposable lenses. These innovative silicone hydrogel lenses were made with comfort in mind, providing everyday value, convenience and health benefits for just 16,50€ for a box of 30 lenses. Not for long she said, just waiting for a signing date on the house they are buying. The last time she did this 'not long' ended up being four years and we still have 2 of her dogs and her 2 pot bellied piggies..... They now have a date to sign 5 days before we have a house full of family guests arriving who we haven't seen in years. I fear that someone will be camping out in the pig pen as the house, as a bank repossession from a builder, will need to be connected to water, electric etc as well as needing a boiler etc, etc. And all this with her about to pop any minute...... It's August, it's hot. Everyone has a shorter fuse. Before you try to do anything breathe and allow twice as long. In a month's time your parking space will be free again and the roads will be clearer. In the meantime drink plenty of water, slap on the sun cream and enjoy yourselves.

New Book/Old Writer (well, not that old!) I always wanted to write, but then if you’ve never written anything you don’t know any better do you? It started with a couple of successes with magazine articles a lifetime ago and developed from there to short stories and eventually full-blown novels. At the time I mistakenly thought I’d have the power to make my characters do my bidding … it turns out the tail very much wags the dog. My main characters wake me up in the middle of the night and tell me they don’t like what I’ve written about them. I usually end up having to get up and rewrite in the small hours! This is why I sometimes need matchsticks to keep my eyes open during daylight hours. I live mainly in Moraira on the Costa Blanca, but sometimes you’ll find me in Oxfordshire, England visiting my family. I adore both my countries, which is probably why they often feature in my writing. I think I must be the luckiest person on earth to live my lifestyle. I wouldn’t change places with anyone - not even the Queen of England or Posh Spice! I have won several writing awards, two of which I am particularly proud (probably because of their Spanish connections) … the 2015 Spanish Radio short story competition, and the 2017 Ian Goven Award. I won’t name all the others – far too uninteresting. I have been lucky enough to write for the big publishers (Macmillan), the small publishers (UPP Books) and this time I have chosen to go it alone as an indie author. My third book ‘Short LOVE Stories’ is about to be launched and you can see it (and this ‘old’ writer’) at Polly’s Bookshop, Jávea (see advert on facing page), on Saturday, 25 August, between 10am and 2pm. Do come, but if you can’t, do join me on my webpage www.hilarycoombes.com or on Facebook, Twitter, etc where I endeavour to make people smile.

Why Seek Financial Advice When I tell people I’m a financial adviser, I often get asked “Why should I work with you?” So to answer that question, here are my top 10 reasons..
by Steve Iball, Area Manager deVere Spain
1. Finance is probably the 3rd most important item in life after family and health. 2. You’re probably not an expert who keeps up to date and constantly researched the subject. 3. Living in Spain means you already have to worry about complex rules such as: income tax, inheritance tax, overseas assets. 4. If you do nothing, you’re effectively diminishing your wealth by either losing it outright on some all-singing alldancing scheme, allowing inflation to reduce the real value or simply not being in control as you move through life. 5. Financial decisions have implications which last a lifetime and will affect your spouse / partners. 6. You’ll find an ‘expert’ on most things in your local bar – personal finance included! They may be right. But best to check with a trained professional. 7. A regulated (in Spain and UK) financial adviser is accountable for their advice, giving you a layer of protection with your investments. 8. You’ll probably find out things that you didn’t know, often to your advantage such as unknown monies in a pension plan, new financial information, and advice that you might never have thought of. 9. Is your financial future worth 1-2 hours of your time at no cost? Of course it is! We’ll even discuss current Brexit thinking! 10. You’ll receive advice at no cost. The only fees I receive are when you decide to act and for that there’s no obligation. My only ‘ask’ is to refer me to a friend if you find my advice useful! With this list, I hope to persuade you to contact a qualified and regulated (not just registered) financial adviser. I work for deVere, one of the big players with qualified financial advisers throughout the world. I’d be delighted to simply sit with you, over a coffee, and have a FREE and NO-OBLIGATION conversation about your finances. All you have to do is call me or email me on 610 822 484 or steve.iball@devere-spain.es. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you!

GIVING4GIVING charity group The GIVING4GIVING charity group has just celebrated a huge milestone. We have now donated 100,000â‚Ź to local charities and good causes on the Costa Blanca. This is a massive amount of money for a small, locally based charity. The GIVING4GIVING charity was started about 5 years ago by Gary Burr. He wanted to raise money to help people suffering from cancer. He started with one shop on the outskirts of La Nucia. Some local ladies volunteered to help and many of those same ladies still work in the charity shop today. Now we have four charity shops, the original one in La Nucia, two in Altea and most recently a new shop in Villajoyosa. We also have a furniture warehouse near La Nucia. All the shops are staffed by volunteers and everything we sell is donated by local people. I feel it is important to stress none of us, including 'The Boss' are paid by charity. We often read of charities where people are paid large amounts of money. This certainly is not the case with us. Every Euro we make is given over to local charities. You will often see photos of Gary Burr in the local press handing over donations. Initially the aim was to help those afflicted with cancer. However, we have also donated to animal charities, the Red Cross, individuals afflicted with severe medical problems, as well as local children's charities. We all enjoy working in the shops and furniture warehouse, it's a great way to meet people, make new friends and practise your Spanish. We are a real mixture of nationalities and different ages, all the way up to 92 years young! We work hard in the shops but the time flies by and you feel a real sense of achievement that you have done some good for the local community. We need more volunteers to join our ever expanding group. If you enjoy meeting people and working as part of a team, drop into one of the shops for a chat or contact Gary Burr on 603 137 697 or garyjames@googlemail.com. Also we need donations. The shops are open Monday to Saturday 10am to 2pm and we welcome donations of clothes, shoes, bags and household items. Large items of furniture can be collected by our lovely men in their van. Please contact Gary to arrange this. We look forward to meeting some of you soon, either to join our team, or to donate items and just as important to look around the shops to find a great bargain!

Private Health Insurance Affordable and accessible By Claire Johnstone C J Insurance Costa Blanca I last wrote about private health insurance in March and it seems there remains a lot of confusion about what cover you really get when taking a policy. It’s simply not right when people buy insurance and then find out that they’re not covered by some small print clause, usually based around pre-existing conditions. I mentioned before I choose DKV, not only as a representative but it’s the insurance I use for my family. I know that when someone takes a policy with me I can feel confident that my customer has taken a good policy, with good cover, with a good company, DKV simply offer excellent medical cover at really good rates. I won’t list everything here (it’s all on the advert!), but there are a few things I really do want to highlight. Firstly, DKV are very clear that many pre-existing conditions are in fact included in the cover, for both doctors and specialists! Secondly, there’s 20,000€ of emergency worldwide travel cover – no more worries about getting treatment should something happen to you. And thirdly, road traffic accidents are covered. I’ve worked in the private health insurance industry providing peace of mind for hundreds of people for 14 years. There are a lot of options out there but for me and my family, only 1 choice! So, if you’re thinking about getting private health cover for your family, or maybe you need it as part of your Residencia application, I’d be delighted to advise and help you. I cover the whole of the North Costa Blanca and am happy to travel to you if you are unable to come into the office. Just call me to make an appointment and take that first step to healthcare peace of mind! About the permanent Spanish health card
Having the permanent Spanish health card is like having a good insurance: you never think you’ll need it until you need it… generally, when it’s too late. The good part? The process to obtaining a health card is not that difficult. Let us explain.
Your health matters
It does. Actually, if you think about it, it’s the only thing that you have. Your money can come and go. Your relationships can come and go. Your material belongings can come and go. But your health can go for good if you don’t look after it, or if you don’t get the right medical treatments because you did not have your permanent Spanish health card.
On protection for health issues
All right, let’s separate “health issues” into two main categories: 1. Emergencies Unexpected events that in general require fast action. 2. Ongoing treatments Can be because of serious illness or non-life-threatening issue. So the question is: would you be covered in Spain in case of emergency? The answer: yes, you would, regardless of whether you have a Spanish health card or not. What about if it was ongoing treatment? No, you would not without having the Spanish permanent health card. There might be exceptions on serious illness, but in general ongoing treatments are not covered without the permanent card.
It’s all connected
There isn’t a “Spanish health card” in reality. The health system operates in a regional way. So depending on the Spanish region where you live, your health card will look one way or another (and will only be valid within that region to see a GP or to buy tablets on prescription. No problem on emergencies though). To obtain a permanent full coverage health card you must go through the process: 1. Padron 2. Spanish residency 3. Social security 4. Health centre None of the above are extremely difficult procedures. They all take the number 1 key for doing well in Spain: preparing all the paperwork beforehand, as each stage has their own requirements (the Spanish residency is the most complex). Within the next publications we will cover the previous four points. In the meantime, remember, your health matters, so our recommendation is that you get your permanent health card sorted as soon as possible. My name is Steve Woods and I am a solicitor specialising in claims for asbestos related diseases and I thought I would look at a number of questions that often arise and that make people worried about the possibility of making a claim. My message is, if in doubt ask! I CANNOT REMEMBER WHERE I WORKED, OR THE COMPANY I WORKED FOR NO LONGER EXISTS. It is not unusual for companies that traded in the 1960s, for example, to have long since stopped trading. With investigations I can trace insurers who provided cover for these companies and they are obliged to deal with the claims. Even if you are hazy about the exact name of a company or your period of employment with them, I can obtain your work history from HM Revenue & Customs and this provides confirmation of who you worked for all those years ago. I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ASBESTOS CONDITION BUT I DID NOT WORK WITH ASBESTOS. I always like to meet my clients and it is surprising how often, when you start talking about a person's work history, what they remember. Often, it turns out that even if a person did not actually work with asbestos, they worked alongside people who did and therefore came into contact with dust. Another possibility, and a particularly sad one in my experience, is a wife who comes into contact with asbestos from her husband’s work clothes. A RELATIVE HAS DIED FROM AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION BEFORE MAKING A CLAIM. It is not widely known that claims can be made even though the person affected has died (provided the claim is made within 3 years of death). The claim is made on behalf of the person's estate. DIAGNOSING AN ASBESTOS RELATED CONDITION. There are a number of conditions that can be caused by exposure to asbestos, including lung cancer. The main issue is whether the breathing difficulties can be attributed to asbestos. This is the point we have to prove in all respiratory disease cases, not just asbestos related but also, for example, silicosis – medical evidence is required to prove a link. Claims for breathing problems caused by exposure to asbestos can be complex but the quicker the claim is started the quicker these issues can be dealt with. So, if you are concerned about your particular situation or have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch. I am happy to talk to you free of charge.

We talk the talk, but do we walk the walk? By Sam Kelly, Managing Partner, Chorus Financial. I’m sure you’ll all be aware by now that I’m not exactly shy in my beliefs that Chorus offer the best investment management service here in Spain! Rather than me just saying it, I’m sure you’d all be interested to know how we do it?
A typical Spanish investment bond or pension here may contain a handful of funds that the financial advisor’s firm have on a ‘recommended fund list’. I can look at pretty much any portfolio here in Spain and have an idea of which firm put it together. The options are often limited, and the fees can be incredibly high.
Chorus take a very different approach. When we say we are independent, we genuinely mean it. We have access to the full fund market, and each and every Chorus portfolio is designed for the individual client.
risk investment). The chart covers July 2013 until July 2018.
The Chorus portfolio has achieved smoother returns vs the FTSE, whilst taking around 50% of the risk of investing in 100% equities. We achieved this by creating the most optimal portfolio possible within the client’s risk tolerance. This meant analysing thousands of funds, choosing only those with the strongest track records, and best performance within their sector and creating a risk-weighted portfolio. The portfolio covered different sectors, regions, and asset types for maximum diversification. Each fund is then closely monitored for the life of the plan, with changes and rebalancing made where necessary to optimise returns. Many funds used here in Spain cost as much as 3-4% and those charges are rarely disclosed. The average fund cost on this portfolio was around 0.5% per annum (costs can vary, and advice on a specific portfolio can only be offered when we have assessed your circumstances).
So how does the process work? The blue line on the chart you can see is an actual portfolio I put together for a client with a balanced attitude to risk. In simple terms, we’d expect a balanced portfolio to have no more than 40-60% exposed to equities, with the rest in cash, fixed interest, property, bonds and alternatives. The red line on the chart is the FTSE 100, an index of the UK’s 100 biggest companies (which would class as a 100% equity, high
As always, we encourage you to google investments and research them for yourselves. This specific portfolio contains funds from Rathbones, Royal London, Vanguard, Schroders, Fundsmith & others, with information on fees and past performance all available online. As with any investment, I cannot and will not guarantee returns. Past performance does not guarantee future performance, and investment returns may be less than those illustrated. In order to achieve any kind of returns these days you must be willing to put your capital at some degree of risk. One thing I will promise, is that a Chorus advisor will always act truly independently and analyse the open market for the very best funds for your pension or investment. This ensures you are in the best possible place to meet your investment goals. People are still signing up every day to over-priced, poorly managed pension and investment portfolios here in Spain. Before you sign that paperwork, get a second opinion! This is even more important if you are considering an investment with a tie-in, as you may find you are stuck with a bad advisor paying high fees for life or forced to pay a heavy exit penalty to move elsewhere. If you want to discuss anything with me, simply call direct on 664 398 702 or email me on s.kelly@chorusfinancial.es. Initial advice is free and without pressure or obligation.

HELP of DAMA and Spanish Red Cross Health Assistance Equipment
Pedro Javier Dominguez Crego from Cruz Roja Española (Red Cross Spain) in Alicante did a presentation for HELP at Denia Hospital to showcase their health assistance equipment.
The equipment has been made to help people who may need additional support where they can contact someone very quickly through the Cruz Roja Call Centres to inform relatives/friends or the emergency services when needed. They provide 6 different equipment options: Option 1 – Basic telephone help assistance: 25€ per month You have a pendant or you can wear a bracelet to be worn all the time in the house (both waterproof). Range covers the whole house and everyone who lives in the house can be under the cover. You can discuss with the installers if you need to cover the garden areas. (Subject to assessment). The number gives 24 hour assistance. The Red Cross Call Centre will have all your details (personal details, medicines, family / friends contact details, etc.). If you press the button and you can’t talk, they will send someone out to you straight away – local emergency services. The Call Centre will check with you once a month to ensure system is working and that you are OK as well as inform you about health campaigns. Option 2 – Same as basic telephone help assistance, but with a sim card for mobile use instead of through the landline: 27.50€ per month With option 1 and 2 you can also have a reminder service added – this is when the Call Centre sends you a reminder to take your medication, you may have to do your diabetes checks or may have appointments. With the reminder service the total cost for option 1 is 30€ and option 2 is 32.50€ per month
Female Focus August 2018
Option 3 – Mobile phone service: 10€ per month (with reminder service 15.50€) Help assistance can be put on your mobile phone – must be a smart phone (Important- Currently not available on iPhone). It covers you wherever you go with your phone within Spain, but is only personal to you. Someone will come and install the service on your mobile. Option 4 – GPS Tracker: 50€ per month This is a GPS tracker that can be worn on a belt. You can set the area on the GPS that the person wearing can go. When they go outside that area, an alarm will go off and the Call Centre will inform the named person on their file where the person is. This is a good device for people who may suffer from dementia, Alzheimer’s or any other condition where they may become lost or disorientated. Family and friends will be able to know where they are. The GPS will also check the speed in case the person has got into a vehicle. Option 5 – Health Assistance: 40€ per month (includes option 1 with reminder service) You receive an electronic scale and blood pressure monitor. This service is if you need to check and maintain your weight / blood pressure. You do your reading daily and if the reading is not
Page 13 www.femalefocusonline.com normal, the Call Centre will contact you and check if you are OK or inform the person listed on your file.
FF - Your healthy magazine
Option 6 – Alarm assistance: 40€ per month (includes option 1 with reminder service) This is where you will have an alarm that can be attached to your pill box, fridge or any other item. If you do not open your pill box at a certain time, an alarm will go off as a reminder or you will be called by the Call Centre. It can be used for anything - where you have to take medication, or weigh yourself, or open a fridge to eat, or drink water. You can also have a sensor alarm – can have one in a bed or on a chair. If the person falls out of the bed or off the chair, the alarm will activate. There are various alarms that can be looked at. You can discuss this with the Red Cross and they can send you a list of the different types available. For 45€ per month you can have option 1 or 2 with options 5 and 6 (3 options). The service can be cancelled at any time or put on hold if you are away. It can then be re-activated. The equipment can be taken and used anywhere within Spain including the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands. You just need to inform the Call Centre and they can make any adjustments that are needed. The Red Cross will discuss your needs with you and make sure what you have is right for you. All installation is included. If you are interested in any of the products, please contact Pedro on pdominguez@cruzroja.es or call 678 501 586. HELP of DAMA is really happy to be able to help the Red Cross to get the information out to the public about these services because they could just save a life.
An important note also is that the above services can on occasion be requested through Social Services if the person meets the criteria. The Cruz Roja in Benissa and Denia both need new ambulances costing €86k each. If you can help in any way and would like to make a donation please contact HELP Denia and Marina Alta on 96 642 7044 or visit the website www.helpofdenia.com or Cruz Roja Española 678 501 586 or visit the website www.cruzroja.es. The Link between Hearing Loss and Dementia It is well accepted amongst hearing specialists that hearing loss is connected with a variety of issues ranging from depression, social anxiety and reduced productivity in the workplace. But did you know that hearing loss also may be linked with dementia? A recent study in the USA has suggested that seniors with hearing loss are “significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who do not experience hearing loss. The actual cause of the link is still unknown, but it may be that the strain of experiencing hearing loss, and the mental fatigue that can result, may lead to a vulnerability for dementia, as the exhaustion from decoding sounds over several years can overwhelm the brain. Finally, social isolation is a known risk factor for dementia as well as hearing loss, so this is another commonality that may have some causative links. Hearing aids as a way to fight dementia? American physician Frank Lin believes that access to hearing aids may even help combat dementia itself, estimating that approximately 36% of risk relating to dementia is attributable to hearing loss. He is creating the first clinical study into whether the use of hearing devices could actually prevent brain decline relating to dementia. The theory is that the effort required to translate sounds when hearing is impaired can precipitate changes in brain structure. Brain scans published in 2014 showed diminished grey matter in those who have experienced hearing loss for more than six years. The particular area affected was related to semantic memory and spoken language. How hearing aids can help Thankfully, Lin’s preliminary research has suggested that treating hearing loss through the use of hearing aids may assist in precluding this type of cognitive decline or, at the very least, the overwhelming effects that untreated hearing loss can have on a person. Considering the correlative links to issues such as dementia, as well as depression, social exclusion and anxiety, there is no reason to delay treating hearing loss through the use of hearing instruments. If you think or know that you are experiencing hearing loss, please contact Chris Elcocks of Premier Hearing Services on 659 644 106 or see his advert above to arrange a FREE hearing consultation. Dental Implants - Why are they better? In this age of technological and medical advancement, with people living longer and healthier lives, lost teeth replaced by removable dentures will become a thing of the past, reserved for the history books. Dental implants are man-made replacements for natural teeth. The implants themselves are designed to be similar to tooth roots. They are anchored in the jaw bone and replacement teeth are permanently secured upon them. Firstly, the titanium implant is placed in the jawbone during a minor surgical procedure. The implant will remain covered under the gum for 3-6 months and during this time the implant will become integrated with bone, forming a very strong bond. This process is known as osseointegration. Once osseointegration has taken place, the ends of the implants are uncovered, and connections are attached so that replacement teeth can be put in place. In the hands of Dr Jorge Santillan, a highly trained Specialist Implantologist, who works at Clinica Dental La Plaza, JĂĄvea these replacements mimic natural teeth to such a degree that you would be very hard pressed to tell the difference. Since implanted teeth are fixed in the mouth like natural teeth rather than being removable like dentures, they allow the patient to return to the functions associated with natural teeth. Whether you have only one missing tooth or you suffer the discomfort and embarrassment of full dentures, which do not fit securely, implants provide you with fixed teeth again. They can take years off your appearance, make your mouth feel naturally comfortable again, allow you to speak with greater clarity, more fully participate in physical activities and hence boost your self-confidence. Because they increase your chewing ability you will once again be able to enjoy all foods thus your overall health and well-being will be enhanced. In short, they can vastly improve the quality of your life. Sometimes a single dental implant will suffice. In other instances, more than one dental implant is necessary to accomplish a natural looking tooth replacement. The pictures above right show two dental implants used in tooth replacement and a single dental implant replacing a missing tooth. The x-ray images demonstrate how dental implants are rooted to the jawbone. These dental implant photos (left) of a molar replacement are a good example of surgery commonly performed by an implant dentist. They show the missing molar, the titanium post and the artificial tooth. The photos below show an upper and lower jaw rehabilitated with dental implants (Dr Jorge Santillan).

Why CBD There must be people who are sceptical about how a plant that has been so reviled, for many years, is being hailed as the new wonder find. In fact, it’s been around for hundreds of years. CBD (in combination with other cannabinoids) works on the CB1 and CB2 receptors located throughout the body. CB1 receptors are mainly in the brain (central nervous system) also in the lungs, liver and kidneys. CB2 receptors are found mainly in the immune system. CBD controls homeostasis (keeping the body stable, blood sugar etc). It does your body good, even if you don’t see many outward signs. ARTHRITIS Often with arthritis, you can’t sleep, because of pain you get tired and the pain sensation is then greater. Full spectrum CBD has a positive effect on sleep and wake rhythm. CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory and reduces pain and inflammation, allowing your body to rest and recover. AUTO IMMUNE CONDITIONS: E.g. Crohn’s Disease, Colitis and Lupus and Fibromyalgia which is characterised by discomfort in many parts of the body. CBD can do wonders to ease the pain. THE HEART AND CBD High blood pressure damages arteries. The inflammation of blood vessels puts significant strain on the heart. CBD lowers blood pressure, fights inflammation and it has also been shown to protect the arteries from Type 2 Diabetes. In Type 1 Diabetes, it helps treat the secondary effects. • Stabilise blood sugars - anecdotal evidence is building to support this. • Suppress some arterial inflammation, which leads to cardiovascular disease. • Prevents nerve inflammation and eases the pain of neuropathy (common complication of diabetes) - by stimulating receptors in body and brain. • Lowers blood pressure, helps reduce the risk of heart disease and other complications. • Keeps blood vessels open and improves circulation. • Relieve muscle cramps and pain of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. • Topical creams relieve neuropathic pain and tingling in hands and feet. CBD can help with many conditions characterised by inflammation such as arteriosclerosis. Why come to me? As a trained nurse I know CBD is not a cure all, unless you have the correct dose and strength that you personally require. This is my business and I am interested in treating your condition properly. I will help you overcome pain, move better, sleep better, and enjoy life with a non-addictive, well tolerated, natural, certified organic product. Banana and Pistachio Bread In the summer months banana bread is one of the best ways to use up over ripe, soft speckly bananas which would usually be thrown away. Brown sugar makes denser moister bread. We love pistachio nuts and they work really well in this recipe. Great served cold or warm with butter or peanut butter. Ingredients: 150g butter 150g brown/ caster sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 150g SR flour 2 eggs 2 ripe bananas, mashed 3 tablespoons unsalted chopped pistachio nuts Time: Prep: 15 mins, Cook: 50-60 mins Serves: 8-10 slices Recipe: - Preheat the oven to 180ËšC/fan 160ËšC/ gas mark 4. - Grease a 2lb loaf tin or line with baking parchment. - In a large bowl, cream the sugar and butter together until light and fluffy. - Add the mashed bananas and nuts, mix in well. - Whisk the eggs and gradually add to the mixture; beat well after each addition. - Gently fold the flour and baking powder into the mixture. - Pour into the tin and bake in the middle of the oven for about 50 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. - Remove from the oven; allow to cool before turning out onto a rack to cool completely. TIP: Walnuts work equally well. Chopped dates can be used to replace some of the sugar. Recipe supplied by the Spice Sisters at Curry on Cooking. Heads and tales in the 50p story by Jack Troughton
The story of Britain’s much-loved 50 pence piece keeps rolling on as the seven-sided coin continues to bounce back with the Royal Mint issuing solid silver commemorative editions. Earlier this year Beatrix Potter was given the special treatment with the tales of Peter Rabbit heading a series based on the author’s much-loved animal characters; a coin celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force is on sale – all with a price tag of £60.
born father, who had a distinguished career as a design engineer, working on civil and military aircraft and who became the world’s leading authority on Bugatti racing cars. “One of the most famous stories behind the coin is when father said he would get sample coins made,” said Mike. “He went to the apprentices at Bristol Siddeley and said he wanted a coin made in the shape.”
The 50p made its first appearance in 1969, replacing the old tenshilling note as the UK headed towards decimalisation, and it remains a popular coin, even though the size was reduced in 1997. And the seven-sided equilateral-curve heptagon has proved to be a supersonic success – especially with a team of engineers officially moonlighting from producing engines to power Concorde...it meant the French shared the cost. Top engineer Hugh Conway, managing director of Bristol Siddeley Engines in Bristol and later a director of Rolls Royce, suggested using the seven-sided polygon and got apprentices to produce ‘dummies’ of the coin.
Hugh ‘HG’ Conway
At the time Hugh was also President of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and the technical member of the British government’s Decimal Currency Board and championed the characteristic shape of the coin.
Hugh’s son Mike lives in Teulada and the recent publicity given to the coin prompted him to tell the remarkable story of his Canadian-

The beauty of the seven-sided 50p – and the later 20p piece – is they are not a circle but have the same diameter however measured; this allows them to roll and be used in parking meters and vending machines. “It really is an iconic coin, an amazing thing. In 100 year’s time someone will look at it and ask ‘who thought of that?’ The shape is not original but the design is and the idea to use it came from father,” said Mike. Mike’s grandparents – HG’s parents – came from Scotland and moved to Canada where Hugh was born in 1914 and later

He said: “Grandfather also had another ‘full time’ job as a historian and wrote many books; they were all later donated to Aberdeen University and to the United States’ Library of Congress.” Writing obviously ran in the family, HG also penned specialist aircraft engineering books and a series on his much-loved Bugatti cars. In the thirties, life in a glamorous fast lane meant car racing and rallies – Mike said HG met his future wife Eve at an event. She was a racing and rally driver, and competed at the famous Le Mans 24 hour race in 1935 – Eve is pictured with a co-driver in

HG was to become chairman of the Bugatti Trust and was a vicepresident of the Bugatti Owner’s Club; cars, engineering drawings and photographs with other memorabilia are housed in the trust’s Bugatti Museum at Prescott near Cheltenham, home of a historic hill climb.
The centre was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in March 1990. Sadly HG, who sold one of his Bugatti’s to fund its construction, died before the opening.

What to do if someone is bitten by a snake Our article last month about Jellyfish stings provoked quite a lot of interest, especially since it recently made the UK Newspaper Headlines that "Eleven tonnes of Jellyfish have been cleared from Spanish beaches after 150 holidaymakers were treated for stings". And we have now been asked about snakes...does Spain have snakes?, and if so how many of them are poisonous?, and most importantly, What should one do if someone is bitten by a snake? Types of Snakes In Spain there are 13 different types of snakes, but only 5 of these have poison that could be fatal to humans. The most dangerous period is in the Spring and Summer when they are active; during the cooler months of Autumn and Winter they tend to hide and hibernate. The photos show the snakes in the order they are listed. Asp Viper This is a very poisonous snake. It is part of the cobra family, where the venom from a bite can lead to cardiac arrest and death. There are not many in Spain, and is believed to be limited to the Pyrenees. If you are bitten by this poisonous snake, seek medical attention immediately. Lataste’s Viper This snake is found in the Spanish peninsula. It is grey and short (around 50cm) and is characterised by its triangular head and a zigzag pattern on its back. It lives in dry, rocky areas, so be careful when collecting firewood and do not put your fingers in holes or cracks as this where the snake may be. Seoane’s Viper This snake is also dangerous. It lives in Galicia, Leon, Biscay coastal strip (Cornisa Cantábrica) and the Basque country. False Smooth Snake This snake is not aggressive and is mainly found in Catalonia. But it is advised to stay away if you do spot one. Common Viper/Adder Found in most parts of Europe, including Spain. A bite of this snake is very painful and can be dangerous, especially for children and older people. It can also be fatal for someone who has a bad health condition. What to do if you have been bitten: • Remain calm and seek medical attention immediately. Either call 112 for an ambulance, or if you are a member of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea then call our 24hr emergency helpline on 96 579 6099 and we will have one of our state-ofthe-art ambulances (think mobile intensive care unit) immediately dispatched and on its way to you. • When venomous snakes bite, they inject venom (poison) into the victim. If untreated, the bites can potentially be deadly. But if the victim quickly receives anti-venom, it can prevent or reverse serious harm. • The importance about remaining calm is that the faster your heart beats, the faster the venom will spread throughout your body. So staying calm will mean the reverse. • Do not attempt to suck out the venom from the bite; this will not help, it is already spreading. • Instead, allow the bite to bleed, and cover it with a loosely wrapped bandage. • While you are waiting for help to arrive, try to write down or record on your mobile phone the size, colourings, markings, shape of the head, and any other details you can remember to accurately describe to the paramedics what type of snake bit you. Be reassured Of the estimated 50 snakebite deaths a year in Europe, only 3-6 occur in Spain, so don’t worry too much. More people die from bee and wasp stings. Aha....that might be the subject of our article next month! Membership of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea is just €50 for a whole year for the whole family. Call their Registration Manager Laure Bolufer on 96 579 6099 (10am to 1pm every weekday). Email: amigos_europeos@yahoo.es. Female Focus August 2018

Tattoos are here to stay
Glance around the beach these days, and it is interesting to note the number of people with tattoos. More common than ever; ‘inking’ is clearly not a temporary fad, it is obviously here to stay. If you are considering getting a tattoo, you should understand the basic safety precautions and aftercare, especially in the hot summer, and don't take the risks lightly. The risks; Tattoos breach the skin, which means that skin infections and other complications are possible, including: Allergic reactions. Tattoo dyes can cause allergic reactions, such as an itchy rash at the tattoo site. This can occur years after you get the tattoo. Skin infections. Sometimes an area of inflammation called a granuloma can form around tattoo ink. Tattooing also can lead to keloids — raised areas caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue. Blood borne diseases. If the equipment used to create your tattoo is contaminated with infected blood, you can contract various diseases — including MRSA, hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Medication or other treatment might be needed if you experience an allergic reaction to the tattoo ink or you develop an infection or other skin problem near a tattoo. Insist on safety precautions. To make sure your tattoo will be applied safely, go to a reputable studio with properly trained employees who follow proper health and safety guidelines and use properly sterilised equipment. Taking care of your new tattoo. Bear in mind these points below, because maybe summer isn’t actually the best time to get a tattoo! • Keep the tattooed skin clean. Use plain soap and water and a gentle touch. While showering, avoid direct streams of water on the newly tattooed skin. Pat the area dry. • Apply a mild moisturiser to the tattooed skin several times a day. • Keep the tattooed area out of the sun for at least a few weeks. • Avoid swimming while your tattoo is healing. • Choose clothing carefully. Don't wear anything that might stick to the tattoo. • Allow up to 2 weeks for healing. Don't pick at any scabs, which increases the risk of infection and can damage the design and cause scarring. If you think your tattoo might be infected or you're concerned that your tattoo isn't healing properly, contact your doctor. As well as being a GP, Dr Poole is also an International Master in Cosmetic Surgery. He will be very glad to assess any case and discuss every possible option in order to choose which one is best for you. Telephone 96 579 2418 or email on:clinicaarenal@gmail.com.

Special visitors to Benitachell Christian Fellowship tell of miraculous healing Simon and Rachel Adams live in Seoul, Korea, and have recently visited Simon’s parents, who are deacons at the church. Rachel, who is Korean, comes from a strong Christian family and is a concert pianist, but in April of last year she had a life-changing accident when her taxi was struck by a bus. She endured months of excruciating pain, which meant she had to use a wheelchair around the house and made it impossible to sit at the piano. Eventually at Christmas, Simon took Rachel (still with the wheelchair) away to a Christian retreat in Thailand for a much-needed break and it was there that the miracle occurred. Having made the great effort to travel so far, Simon and Rachel extended their holiday by a couple of days, just long enough to meet another Christian couple, whose ten-year-old son prayed for Rachel - and by the next morning all her pain had gone and full mobility was restored. When Rachel went back to the high-tec, state-of-the-art hospital in Seoul, the doctors were amazed and Rachel’s medical notes concluded with “Healed by prayer”! It is a fact that Rachel was being prayed for by numerous people in many countries and her story has now gone around the world, giving much hope to others. Rachel demonstrated her fully returned piano expertise and gave her testimony in detail as the congregation listened intently. If you would like to know more on this subject or any other relating to Christianity please come along and join us at 11am on any Sunday. We are English-speaking, friendly people from a variety of Christian denominations and we shall offer you a very warm welcome. Plant and watering tips. Due to the late summer you may have noticed how your plants have responded differently and much later this year, giving flowers longer into the summer than normal but having had a later start.
www.charlesworthgardens.com
I often visit lots of gardens where people have had existing gardeners who have already set their watering times for the irrigation systems incorrectly. These problems range from minor to just nuts. The simple facts are that plants require water, you can change and help manage the quantity of water you give your plants based on either the type of plant they are, and / or their position within the garden i.e. how much shade they have / do not have. For your general plants you are better off giving them little and often. I normally do twice a day but always at the coolest points of the day. We are sometimes restricted by some timers as to when we can irrigate, but always early in the morning. Why? This is the coolest point of the day for ground and air temperature, the ground has had all night to cool down and the plants are more receptive to take water at these moments. This all helps the plant feel less stressed and it equips the plant for the long hot day to come.
&
Why not to water when it’s hot? Have you ever dug a hole in the middle of summer? If you have you will know how hot the ground even a couple of feet down can be. If you water your plant when it is very hot the water will filter into the ground and rapidly heat. The result is you will effectively cook your roots (boil in a bag). continued on next page

www.femalefocusonline.com
FF - House & Home Page 31 I have often had customers say their previous gardeners have set the irrigation at 1 hour every three days? Again, one very simple question. Is it better that you drink a little and often or have nothing for three days and then try and drink a bucket full of water? Most customers who have this sort of timing set up believe that this will be better for their water bill, which again is incorrect. The main problems with watering this way is that the ground in general will absorb the water leaving the plants to have to grab what they can. Most of the water will evaporate, and this then creates a famine or feast situation, something that is not productive to continuous and steady growth. If you run your irrigation twice a day for just five minutes at the correct times means you will run your irrigation for 70 minutes in the week, if you run it for one hour every three days then you will run it for 140 minutes per week, double the amount of water and believe me, a poor result for the growth of your plants.
A part of getting the best from your garden is to make sure your garden /plants are well fed. We aren’t blessed with nutrient rich soils on the coasts of Spain. Luckily the vast majority of plants we source are from local or similar climates and therefore they are used to poor quality soil, but this doesn’t mean they don’t benefit from some stimulation. You can buy feeds for all sorts of specialist plants such as your palms and conifers, but you can also use general plant food or NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium) feeds for your general planting, this can be lightly sprinkled onto your borders. When was the last time you fed your plants? It really will make a big difference. You will need to check the times for feeding as normal feeding periods are Autumn and Spring time, the October feed charges the ground so when the plants are ready to start to take the feed, they have it at their disposal, it's also because of the rain we normally have toward the end of the year, which will wash it into the ground and the spring feed is the boost for the main growing season. Try and combine these watering and feeding tips with good pruning and watch your garden bounce into life. Charlesworth Gardens don’t just design and build amazing gardens we can help you with irrigation system repairs and set ups, we also supply plants at great prices if you feel some parts of your garden needs a revival.

Cooking fat, roots and wet wipes by The Drain Team At the Drain Team, we get called on for all sorts of drainage problems, often the first symptom being a return effluent into the loo and even into the shower and bath – really not nice! Generally we find that there are 2 main causes of this which happen time and time again! Wet wipes are the scourge of drainage – and this includes any domestic cleaning wipes, makeup remover wipes and moist toilet tissues. You may have heard of the infamous ‘fatberg’ under London’s streets. It was the weight of 10 double decker buses and as long as 2 football pitches. The main cause – wet wipes congealed with cooking fat! We’ve not seen anything nearly as large as that, but we do regularly see mini fatbergs. Of course everyone denies flushing wet wipes down the loo, and tipping cooking fat down the sink! But the evidence is irrefutable. What’s sad is that a simple lack of care is causing a really nasty situation, not to mention the additional expense of resolving the issue. Our advice, heed the warning and save yourself the awful problem, and money! If you don’t heed the warning, call us and we’ll still turn up with a smile and get you out of the poo – literally! Roots are a completely different issue. You wouldn’t believe how many drains get damaged by roots that grow into the pipes, and then simply block them up or completely break them. It happens slowly so you don’t notice until you’re up to your elbows in the nasty stuff. We do have equipment that can go down the pipes and clear a fair amount of the roots, but eventually, you’ll need new drainage pipes. Either way, that’s what we’re here for. Whilst we have your attention, ever notice your pool seems to need a lot of topping up? Probably a small leak somewhere. The thing is, small leaks turn into big leaks, and then you’re in for a BIG water bill. If you think this applies to you, again we have the equipment to check and detect leaks, and of course fix and repair them. The Drain Team is based in Jalón but covers the entire Costa Blanca from Benidorm to Valencia and inland. If you’re up to your elbows in the brown stuff, call us on 650 984 348 and we’ll put the smile back on your face. Visit our website www.thedrainteam.es.

U3A Vall del Pop: Greetings Cards As I get older I get more pleasure in receiving a greeting card, yes, the old fashion card that comes in an envelope delivered by a postman. I don’t know whether it is nostalgia of what I knew as a boy or whether it is the knowledge that someone has selected this card specifically for me, purchased it several days before, and possibly weeks before if it is coming from overseas, and timed its posting to, hopefully, arrive on the correct date. Oh, the joy of opening a card on your special day. I am not saying that cards via the internet are not acceptable, and not selected without the same love and care, but they are a bit “instant”, “too quick”, “too easy” for me - give me a good old fashion card. With that in mind the U3A Vall del Pop has a card making group, where you can learn to make your own cards, you select the picture, the message, the add-ons and even the colour of the card. You arrange them in whatsoever order and placement you want, that will be special for the recipient. Then, you hand write a personal message and post it – to await the joy of a phone call to say it has been received and appreciated as much as you hoped. Ahh bliss. Why not join the Card Making group, or some other of the many and relive memories of the past, or just learn new skills?

The Original Charity Library supports Books2Africa and launches the “Sponsor a box” campaign The Original Charity Library, situated in Jávea Park, is home to a huge collection of approximately 14,000 wonderful books. And book donations, which are always gratefully accepted, continue to pour in every day. This puts us in the happy position to be in possession of a surplus of books which we would like to donate to a good cause. Books2Africa is based in Canterbury and was founded in 2012 with the purpose of supplying books to Africa where there is a general lack of access to books and educational materials. 20 African countries have so far been the beneficiaries and thanks to this great project many students in African countries have their first book. There are also many African communities in the challenging process of developing free public libraries for adults and children and setting up school projects and they are very grateful to receive these books. The cost of transporting a box of approximately 40 books (20kg) to Canterbury is 10€. We are appealing to all our clients to help us to finance this project by making a contribution, however small, or perhaps even sponsoring a box of books for 10€. If you would like to help out please contact info@charityshoplibrary.com or come and see us at the Original Charity Library in Jávea Park or The Original Charity Shop on Carrer de Nancy 1, in Jávea’s Arenal where we have collection tins waiting for your generous donation. The shop and library are open from Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. We have the books – you have the cash to get them to their destination where they will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for helping us to help others.
Come and visit PUNTA DEL ESTE for a tranquil and relaxed beach bar experience This newly opened Chiriguito beach bar takes its name from "La Mano" (The Hand) which is an increasingly famous sculpture in Punta del Este by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal. It depicts five human fingers partially emerging from the sand and is located at Brava Beach in Punta del Este, the popular and most eastern resort town in Uruguay. Jávea, of course, is the most easterly part of Spain, so the name fits perfectly here too. PUNTA DEL ESTE is a very different beach bar offering a chilled, quiet, more laid back ambience ....one could even say that it has a 'more grown up' feel about it. Serving delicious food, and drink, it is located near to the Parador Hotel, and stone's throw away from Mintt. Open from 10am daily, until late, Female Focus has tested this new venue and was most impressed.

Cancer Care and Jalón Valley Help working together for a common cause There have been very few times when Elaine Horton, President of Jalón Valley Help has been lost for words and even fewer when she has experienced true humility. At a scheduled meeting last week Lyn Buntrock, the President of Cancer Care managed to make her achieve both within a matter of seconds, with a wonderful, and completely unexpected, donation of 30,000€ to Jalón Valley Help. This magnificent donation epitomises the bond of friendship and spirit of cooperation, that exists between Jalón Valley Help and Cancer Care, and proves beyond doubt that cooperation and collaboration, not competition, does really work. Such a strategy not only increases the services provided but most importantly, improves the outcomes of those who Cancer Care and Jalón Valley Help are privileged to be able to help during their darkest hours and days. The Spanish word ánimo, a very powerful word, which among other connotations, means strength, service and spirit, more than adequately describes the relationship between the two organisations. Incidentally, it's also the name of the JVH drop in centre in Alcalalí - Ánimo. What made the occasion even more poignant was that Elaine had gone to the meeting prepared to bring the Cancer Care President and committee members up to date with JVH plans for the extension of their service at Hospital Ferris, Fontilles, as Cancer Care has been a very generous supporter of the current service JVH provide. What happened following the meeting came as a complete and very welcome surprise. It cannot be emphasised enough how grateful Jalón Valley Help is for the support provided by Cancer Care for the work at Fontilles. Those patients and their families who benefit from the care JVH are able to provide would also wish us to express their gratitude to Cancer Care.
The requests for admissions vary from respite care, rehabilitation following major surgery, to “end of life care”. Cancer is a very large part of the latter category. Requests for admissions have increased since the opening of the Santolina Suite some four years ago, with JVH often supporting several patients at any one time. In order to respond to the increasing demand JVH plans to extend its services at Fontilles, which will involve a considerable financial commitment for a small charity and Cancer Care's gift will ensure both the expansion and its sustainability. This is a story about cooperation, belief and a great spirit of comradeship between two charities, whose aims are to provide care, hope, sympathy and understanding to those in need, whenever it is required. For more information on these charities please visit www.cancercarecharitycentre.com and www.jalonvalleyhelp.com.

How to Make the Big Decision to Move Country Using a Decision Weighted Matrix Have you ever had to make a big decision and have been stuck between a rock and a hard place? Are you just relying on your gut feeling? Do you find it hard to detail why you are coming up with the decision? Have you ever heard of a 'Weighted Decision Matrix (WDM)'? A WDM breaks down a large decision to be made into smaller chunks of independent criteria which you specify. It really does 'dumb' down a big decision into smaller bits which you can assess each criteria - and then get an overall decision based on each of the smaller chunks. It really is a helpful way to make big decisions; especially when they are not clear cut. I have used this WDM to determine whether it truly was worth moving to another country; moving to Australia from New Zealand. It was such a hard decision to make at the time that we employed this method in order to help us make the final decision. This method proved independently it was the right decision to go for. Here is how to do it 1. List every criteria you value most in life; such as • Family • Climate • Money • Access to housing • Access to schools • Employment opportunities • Cost of living • Friends close by • Anything else you can possibly think of which is important to you and your family.
Female Focus August 2018
2. Next thing to do is write a number between 1 and 5 next to each of these values you have just written. The number 1-5 corresponds to how much you value the criteria with 5 being you value it the most. Example Family - 5. You value family the most you possibly can. Money - 2. You value money only a 2 out of the scale to 5. 3. Next thing to do is list the current situation and the decision to be made. Example Stay in Spain / Australia Move to UK / New Zealand 4. Under each decision (if you stay where you are or whether you move) you need to specify if the values you have picked (Money etc) are met or not. The scale here is 0-3. If the value you specified is completely met then you would give it a 3. Say, by moving to Australia the money value was completely satisfied, you would rate that 3. If it wasn't then you could rate it 0 or 1 for example.) 5. Once you have rated each of your specified values/ options such as money/ lifestyle against each decision to be made (stay or move for example) then you multiply the value score by the criteria score. 6. Sum total each column for what you just did above and you have a winner. This is a very basic example and you need to expand the options using many more such as retirement, health care etc.
