Specsavers Ópticas stays open with safety in sight
S
PECSAVERS Ópticas is reminding people to continue to look after their eye health during the latest restrictions, after one in three people noticed a deterioration in their eyesight in the first lockdown.
The opticians is reassuring the public that its doors remain open at all their stores, despite the latest measures, after being classified as an essential healthcare provider. This means customers can continue to travel to stores for appointments, in line with official government guidelines. Store director of Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea and Calpe, Louise Stone, says: ‘We want to reassure customers that it is absolutely safe to book an appointment or come in as scheduled as we have all the necessary safety measures in place. We have adapted our ways of working so we can remain open to serve the public’s eye health needs and every store is adhering to strict government guidelines to ensure customers and colleagues remain safe at all times. ‘As providers of an essential health service, we have played a key role in looking after people’s eye health throughout the pandemic and we’re pleased that we can continue to do so, while also playing our part in relieving some of the strain on the health service.’ Specsavers’ wide range of services include: • Eye tests using state-of-the-art technology • Contact lens consultations • New glasses and frame repairs
To make sure customers can enjoy a safe visit, Specsavers Ópticas have introduced a series of hygiene and personal protection measures in store. This includes restrictions on the number of customers allowed in the store at any one time, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in line with government and industry guidelines. In addition, all testing equipment and frames are thoroughly sanitised before and after handling, there are hand sanitiser stations in store, and social distancing rules are followed. There are Specsavers Ópticas stores in Jávea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca. To find out more or book your next appointment visit www.specsavers.es

hose that know Altea Golf Club truly love the unique and challenging nature of the course. It may only have 9 holes, but with 2 distinct tees per hole, it really does play like an 18 hole course. Of course, the great advantage of a 9 hole course is that if you only have a certain amount of time, you can still play a full round on a challenging and enjoyable course. It’s often called ‘the hidden gem’ because (a) it's amazing how many golfers are yet to discover it and (b) it is literally hidden between the southern slopes of the Sierra Bernia and the village of Altea La Vella. People always comment on its beauty and tranquillity when they come for the first time. This is just one aspect that makes the club unique. We have a wonderful bar and terrace where all members of the public are welcome to enjoy a glass of wine or beer, in absolutely stunning surroundings. Restaurante Jacaranda offers fine dining with the options of several Indian dishes courtesy of Sidhu, the manager, who is passionate about all food, but being Indian, you can be assured of authentic Indian dishes. We also have a thriving fitness centre and petanca court. Membership is made up of golfers from many nationalities giving a friendly, vibrant international feel. Annual membership is just 1350€ making it an ideal Christmas Gift. Membership gives you unlimited access to the course plus of course “member rates” in the Restaurant and Pro-Shop. If you wish to know more about membership, email Miguel Marín, the club manager, on gerencia@alteagolfclub.com. (Please quote ref FF1220) Come and take a look and you’ll not look back. Altea Golf Club is simply stunning, challenging and well worth a visit. We look forward to welcoming you. See our advert below left for more information.

Walk Your Way Well
by Niamh O'Sheehan
I’m not sure that the expression “time flies when you’re having fun” really applies when we reflect on 2020. But, even with so much to contend with, this year quite suddenly seems to be flying by and I wonder if I’m ready to admit that my age is starting to affect my perception of time? This is a well documented phenomena and turns out it’s not simply our maturing imaginations! And so, as Christmas approaches (yes, it’s perfectly acceptable to mention the C word now that we’ve hit December) it’s time to figure out ways to make this year's festivities deservedly and particularly special after a somewhat grim but bizarrely rewarding year. Now, I don’t know about you, but trivial or extravagant presents seem inappropriate this year. I’m feeling I need to put some extra thought into my gifting for Christmas 2020. I feel I really need to try to give my loved ones an offering that truly reflects that I care deeply about them. And, more importantly, reminds them to care about themselves. No mean feat for me, what with trying to fathom inspiring ideas for three digitally addicted kids and a workaholic husband! But, let’s start with the idea of SHOPPING LOCAL. It has been, without doubt, one of the most complicated and intense years in our living history, for smaller and family run businesses. So, why not make an impact on our community economy by purchasing gift vouchers for our family and friends? Most hair & beauty salons, fitness class instructors, restaurants, boutiques and many others will be delighted to print you a gift voucher to the value you can afford. Just flick through the pages of this Female Focus magazine and you can be rest assured all these businesses will be more than grateful for your support. If you are considering the “person who has everything” then maybe you could book the services of a cleaner or handy-person for an afternoon to help around the house? Furthermore, there are a myriad of talented local musicians, photographers, sculptors, painters and all manner of artists whose work has dried up and they are facing destitution as our governments have failed to properly support the arts during this crisis. Booking a portrait sitting, music or painting class, photo shoot or commissioning a piece could be what literally saves their family this Christmas. And what of walking I hear you say? Doesn’t Niamh usually harp on about the virtues of walking? Yes, she certainly does. I cannot express enough the absolute positivity that a decent walk will bring to you and your family this Christmas. A gift doesn’t always need to come wrapped in shiny foil and ribbons. What about the gift of an experience? Start small by including a family walk together on Christmas morning or think big by booking a walking weekend away in one of the many historic hostels in our hills that are crying out to once again hear the clickedy-clack of your walking poles. On a serious note, if you are alone this Christmas and feeling lonely try your best to get out into the fresh air and breathe in your surroundings to remind yourself of the beauty that accompanies us every step of the way on our life journey. If loneliness is affecting you badly please reach out to a friend or local walking group or please just drop me a line; I’m always happy to walk ‘n talk! Let’s be there for one another this Christmas more than ever before. If you’re still stuck for gift ideas here’s a typical walkers wish list (hint hint darling children!) and you can purchase all these in local small high street and back street shops: Walking sticks 15€+, walking socks 5€+, walking high visibility vest 5€+, head-lamp 5€+, rucksack 20€+, water bottle 5€+, beanie cap with LED 10€+, Fitbit or step-counter 30€+, footcream & suncream 5€+, walking belt 10€+, walking boots 30€+ neck warmer & buff 10€+, compass 5€+, walking pants 10€+, pen knife 20€+, rain jacket 20€+... I’m hoping my wish list might help inspire you to pick up something useful and thoughtful to motivate someone to start or continue the journey to Walk their Way Well. And, on that note, I would like to sincerely thank anyone and everyone who has taken the time to read my ramblings in 2020. I thank the Female Focus for their continued community support and for giving me the opportunity to contribute my little piece every month. Above all else, I thank my family and friends for getting each other through the brutality of 2020.
We may not have it all together; but together we have it all. Walk your Christmas Well!

A great new service for expats who can’t see their doctor and have translation problems when seen.
New English speaking medical clinics have recently been launched by Dr Margo Livingston, Doctor of Immunology and Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Masters degree) with her business partner Helena Davidson. This pair recognised the urgent need that many expats currently have during the pandemic with COVID-19, that they can’t easily get doctor’s appointments and also have difficulty understanding the conversation with a doctor during a telephone interview, if they don’t speak Spanish. Many people need basic medical care and follow up for illnesses unrelated to corona virus but these needs are sadly not being met due to the clamp down in services and focus on COVID-19. This exciting new professional service will help those needing a medical check up, treatment for minor illnesses, routine blood check ups, weight management, nutrition advice, medication review and COVID-19 testing for both current and prior infection. As a Doctor of Immunology, Margo can also help explain more about COVID-19 testing and supply valuable scientific information about this pandemic in terms of viral spread, symptoms, recovery from illness and address some of the myths which have been frightening people during this year. Dr Margo is also a psychotherapist with experience in anxiety, depression and addiction. She is also a major advocate of natural healing methods like Qi Gong and Body Sculpting for anti-ageing. The clinics are being held in Karen Gardener’s well-respected clinic - the Clinica Dental, La Plaza, in Jávea as well as in central Gandia and Villalonga for those in these predominantly Spanish areas. Both Margo and Helena look forward to serving many expats who need medical help and expertise, guide them, direct them for specialist referral if required and simply help allay the fears of those with problems unrelated to COVID-19.

"Amongst the 30,000 people I stood out. But I didn't want to stand out. In fact, completely the opposite, I wanted to fit in..." Interview with Mr Paul Bradley by Female Focus magazine
Imagine being 6'1'' tall, 19 stone, having a large body frame, a 21" neck, and being totally bald. This was Paul Bradley standing in the crowd at the Bon Jovi concert at the O2 Arena in London in 2010. His friend, who was running late from work, was trying to locate him in the crowd to join him, and succeeded. Yes, amongst the 30,000 people, Paul's large completely bald head was a bright shiny beacon, and a location giveaway. But, for Paul, rather than it being a good thing, having a bald scalp (think Kojak / Telly Savalas) felt embarrassing and self-conscious. Not so much that he would always wear a hat, or contemplate wearing a wig, but Paul was constantly looking for a solution; he always wanted to have a hairline, and to have a softer look. Fast forward 10 years to today, and Paul is completely at ease with himself, happy to mingle, and no longer feels at all self-conscious. And he has achieved the softer look that he so desired, and he feels much more socially accepted. The difference? Three words: Scalp Micro Pigmentation. Scalp Micro Pigmentation (SMP) is the perfect solution for Receding Hairlines, Male Pattern Baldness, Alopecia, Scars or Thinning Hair, and it can help the ladies too. It offers a permanent look, is very low maintenance, affordable and gives an instant solution. The only upkeep required afterwards is to keep the skin on your scalp in good condition, shaving regularly and expecting little top-up treatments every 18 months to 2 years. "Thanks to Daz, from the very first session I looked in the mirror and no longer saw the reflection of a bald man. Instead, I felt more confident, I became happier to go out, and in a very judgmental world I felt so much better about myself, and still to this day, in a room of people the only person who knows that I have had something done is me" says Paul. "And I highly recommend Daz Day who has years and years of experience". Since beginning in the SMP industry in 2013, Daz Day has worked at clinics at Harley Street in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Houston Texas USA and is now opening in Denia. So far Daz has treated over 3,500 happy clients and you, too, can get the appearance of a fuller shaven head of hair, and get your hairline back instantly from just the first session. You will feel and look younger, more confident and more self-assured each time you have a treatment. Photo 1 - Daz Day (L) with Paul (R) Photo 2 - Paul had the treatment in time for his wedding.

Pan Roasted Brussels Sprouts Sabzi
Give Christmas dinner an Indian twist with this spicy South Indian recipe for the much maligned Brussels sprouts! This also makes a great Boxing Day curry. The Brussels are pan fried with tempered spices which give an amazing flavour to the old boring sprout. The trick here is not to overcook the sprouts, to keep them al dente. It’s the over cooking which imparts that sharp bitter taste that so many of us associate with them! Trimming the roots and cutting in half reduces the bitterness too. Ingredients 1 tsp turmeric 200g Brussels sprouts 1 tsp ground black pepper 3 tbsp rapeseed/veg oil 1 tsp salt 5-7 curry leaves (optional) 1 tsp garam masala 2 garlic cloves finely chopped 2 chopped chillies (optional) 1 tsp mustard seeds 2 tbsp sesame seeds (optional) 1 tsp cumin Chopped fresh coriander to garnish (optional) TIME: 30 minutes - SERVES: 4 as a side - TOP TIP: A Curry On Cooking spice kit can be used to replace the spices. Recipe - Prep the veg by washing and drying; remove a layer of outer leaves. Trim the roots and cut in to quarters. - In a large saucepan or wok heat the oil to a medium heat; once hot, add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds, cook until they start to crack, pop and turn a golden colour. If using the curry leaves add along with the garlic. - Add the spices; turmeric, pepper, salt, garam masala and chopped chillies cook for 1 minute. - Toss the Brussels sprouts in to the pan, mix well. Stirring a couple of times cook for about 5-8 minutes or until the edges start to go brown. - Add 5-6 tablespoons of water; stirring occasionally, cover and cook for 8-10 minutes, to prevent them catching add more water if required. Cook until the spouts are tender but still al dente - Once cooked check seasoning. Sprinkle and mix the sesame seeds, garnish with coriander and serve. STOCKING FILLERS Perfect gifts from a local authors
Making that lifechanging move to live overseas has become that little bit easier with the publication of a chart-topping new guide. Few know the pitfalls that await in sun-kissed foreign lands more than former diplomat and seasoned ex-pat Lynda Brettle. Now the mother-of-two, who has lived in Spain since 2003, has pulled all of her knowledge and experience together for a fascinating new book. Brains at the Border has already reached number one in Amazon’s Travel Writing chart, as well as attracting a string of five-star reviews. Lynda said: “Living abroad is not the same as a holiday. “Moving overseas for the first time, especially under your own steam, can be like getting behind the wheel of a car without any driving lessons and heading straight into the M4 traffic. “Brains at the Border provides the guidance and support needed to avoid disaster.” Lynda worked as a diplomat for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for many years before settling in Spain. Since launching her own consultancy services for prospective ex-pats, she has seen first-hand the problems that can blight that dream move. In Brains at the Border she recalls many of her own overseas experiences on paradise islands and in war zones, as well as providing valuable tips for overcoming the language, legal and bureaucracy hurdles that often await immigrants. Lynda added: “Brains at the Border features my own thrilling, funny and dramatic experiences living and working all over the world with the FCO. “There are also the experiences, good and bad, of others, especially those setting up on their own in Spain – and the range of issues for anyone to consider when moving abroad.” As well as running her successful ex-pat mentoring service, Lynda volunteers as President of the charity Samaritans in Spain. Since the release of Brains at the Border it has received a string of entirely five-star reviews from delighted readers. Lynda’s new guide has been described as a ‘life lesson’, ‘helpful’ and ‘a great insight into relationship survival’. Following the success of Brains at the Border, Lynda is writing further books. For more details, visit Amazon and search for Lynda Brettle, where the paperback and Kindle formats of Brains at the Border are both available from all marketplaces including Amazon.co.uk

HELP! (I Need Somebody) HELP! (Not Just Anybody) HELP! (I Need Someone To Help) Living as an expat here in Spain is truly wonderful - until things go wrong! Maybe the boiler isn’t working, you need some legal advice, if you’re in business you need some urgent printing, your car insurance quote is too much. The answer is to find a professional, trustworthy, and legal business or tradesman (tradesperson!) to get your things fixed. The question is: who to turn to that you can trust? The Costa Blanca Business Association (CBBA) put simply is a business networking and referrrals organisation. The CBBA currently comprises more than 20 members covering a wide range of goods and services, supplying businesses and people living here in the Costa Blanca. It was set up approximately 10 years ago and has become a trusted and established source of businesses you can turn to and trust. Businesses You Can Trust It’s often said for every legit tradesman there are twice as many running around in beaten up white vans, some still on foreign plates, doing everything cash, totally uninsured if they break something, and not available if the job isn’t done properly. We can’t say how true that is, but we can say, when you use a member of the CBBA, you can be assured that they are operating legally, and will stand by their work. All our members are ‘vetted’ to ensure they’re ‘in the system’ and paying taxes. In short, a CBBA member is trustworthy, professional and honest. And if things go really wrong, then we can exert pressure to make sure issues are sorted properly. So if you have any job, no matter how small or large, there’s a strong likelihood that one of our members can help! Vist www.cbba.es to find a full list and contact details of our members. IN BUSINESS? JOIN US! If you’re in business and would like to be considered to joining the region’s most successful referral network group, why not contact us to find out how you can enhance your business! Members meet every 2 weeks at Restaurante Los Arcos, N332, Pedreguer. If you would like to come along as a visitor (businesses only), email info@cbba.es visit www.cbba or call +34 634 36 60 83.

Sofas that are prepared for absolutely everything. Even for the unexpected.
If you are looking to buy a new sofa or chair and antibacterial protection is a priority to you, then read on to learn about the protections offered by Aquaclean. How does Aquaclean protect me from viruses and bacteria? For your peace of mind, Aquaclean fabrics offer a double guarantee of hygiene…On the one hand, the SAFE FRONT® component protects against viruses and bacteria as standard, effectively reducing their activity and providing a permanent shield. And on the other hand, the Aquaclean component limits the penetration of viruses and bacteria into the fabric. Health, Hygiene and Well-being Bacteria and mites really do proliferate if you have pets at home. But Safe Front is a fantastic ally against these organisms, which can cause allergies, especially in children and the elderly. Longer Lasting Aquaclean creates a physical barrier – a layer between the fabric loops and the top visible part of the fabric which prevents accidental snagging, not only caused by pets, but also by jeans rivets, zippers or rings. Easy Maintenance The surfaces of these collections are completely smooth, which facilitates the removal of pet hairs from the fabric. These fabrics are not indestructible, but they do help to prolong your sofa's lifespan. Aquaclean offers a range of plain and printed fabrics for the most demanding and sophisticated of tastes. Aquaclean has become a benchmark in the world of interior design and decoration nationally and internationally. AQUACLEAN WITH SAFE FRONT® CLEAN ON THE OUTSIDE, CLEAN ON THE INSIDE

Pruning and Trimming It’s the time of year when we may see storms and is the beginning of cold winter weather Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth and therefore it’s important that your plants and trees receive the treatments they need. Unfortunately, I see all too often gardeners going to customers houses and whipping out the hedge trimmer and regularly, if not over regularly, trimming plants in gardens. It’s not that this form of trimming is not acceptable but it isn’t the only way and should not be the continuous way your plants are trimmed. A hedge has to be trimmed always, this is how hedges are kept, but a shrub in the garden can be trimmed but should be pruned. Too many gardeners just trim either because they don’t know how to prune or through laziness and at the end of the day it is bad for your plants. To break it down, trimming a plant is acceptable if, it is the autumn such as now and a plant needs just a little trim to tidy it up, it is also acceptable if a plant was heavily pruned the year before and now only needs a little trim to put it into a shape or form during the spring.
&
Generally, trimming only encourages growth at the end of the branches and with many plants this encourages a whole host of bad growth within a plant, it tends to stop airflow through the plant, it encourages crossed branches and things like this only lead to pests and rot, so long term it is not the best solution. Basically the best time to trim a shrub is in autumn and just as a matter of tidying the plant, you will only trim within the foliage, then in the spring once you see the plant starting to shoot, this is when you can give the plant a solid prune, this will allow new branches and new foliage to grow and give the plant a far more vigorous and healthy growth shape and encourage more flowers. continued on next page

Page 29
Female Focus Magazine December 2020
Often when a plant is only trimmed and especially if bad or a lack of pruning has happened in its early years, then you can get all top heavy growth, but most people don’t want that, they want a solid healthy looking plant. The only way to achieve this is by giving it a good prune. If you can see in the two pictures attached the first is a nerrium oleander which had been trimmed and is only growing on the top of the plant, bad habits of a bad gardener. In the second picture you will see the same plants pruned. This pruning will create much lower and healthier growth creating a full plant which does its intended job. Just to be clear, I would always as part of regular maintenance, never recommend pruning plants (accept for some trees) at this time of year I would only trim, but if it is part of a clearance project that has been scheduled for this time of year then it’s more important that the plants are cut properly regardless, but that is part of a circumstance. The main thing now is to have your garden tidy, and you can relax through the winter months, then come the spring, prune and enjoy the fruits of your labour toward the summer when your garden bounces into life and looks better than ever. Happy Christmas to everyone and all of our customers who has supported us through 2020 and let's hope we all have a much more enjoyable 2021.

t wasn’t one of the things a Miss World contestant might have said, and many people might snort, some retort when one says, ‘I work in a charity shop’, on the lines of ‘How decent of you!’, ‘Golly, how good of you to give up your time!’. Well, I had the pleasure of eagerly looking forward to Wednesdays. Rachel was there. She was witty and amusing; cheerful and kind. She would happily model some outrageous outfit to please a customer or pet their waiting dogs outside. Sadly in a September we lost her. Her husband’s wish was that instead of flowers which eventually wilt and die, any donations to the Calpe/ Benissa Lions would serve as a more lasting memory of his beloved wife. Last month our President Carole Saunders received 500€ in Rachel’s memory. Those who benefit from this generous donation will feel lucky, though not as fortunate as we were, to have had the pleasure of knowing her. R.I.P. Rachel Rushworth. TM LIONS FUND TOASTER TM LIONS RESPONSE TO FOR MEN’S REFUGE COVID CHALLENGE Teulada Moraira Lions were recently asked for help by the Men’s Refuge in Gandia to buy a replacement toaster for their use. We have helped the Refuge before because they are a local cause whose work we admire. They provide a home and nursing care for around 65 homeless men, many of whom suffer from mental or physical illness. Some are terminally ill. These men would otherwise be on the streets and unlikely to survive without this special care. During the pandemic, the staff have completely locked down the centre and have had almost no contact with people outside the home. As we all know, appliances eventually wear out and this was the case with their toaster which is heavily used, particularly at breakfast times. We were asked to fund a replacement catering standard toaster for them which we readily did. The toaster was delivered to the Refuge and they have sent the attached photo showing it set up for use. This €400 purchase was only made possible because of the generosity of our supporters. As we have stated before, fund raising is difficult in the current times, but we were able to make this money available and will continue to do so as long as we can.
TM Lions are part of the Lions Club International Foundation and through this organisation, we were offered a grant to support any local hospitals/ care homes who may be in need through a donation of hand sanitiser, masks & face shields. We contacted the Centro Residencial Ana Maria Espinos Llopis in Teulada who responded very positively to this offer of assistance. This facility has recently suffered directly from Covid and so it was important that the donation was presented as soon as possible, but also without introducing any further risk. The staff at the facility were very helpful in what must be a difficult time for them. We were able to take the equipment and assemble it on the front porch. Their staff then came out to receive it and we were able to take a photograph. All contact has been through email, but we received the following note of thanks from the staff at the centre: ‘We thank you for all the help you can afford to us….It is very kind of you to remember us.’ We offer the staff and residents every good wish as they continue to care for some of our area’s most vulnerable in very difficult times and we are pleased to have been able to offer a little bit of help.
To continue to support us in our important work, please visit the Lion's Den charity shop which can be found a couple of doors away from Letters R Us beneath the Pepe La Sal supermarket on the Centro Comercial, Moraira, just past the fountain roundabout on Ctra Moraira-Teulada. We also have a GoFundMe page if you would like to support us but do not yet feel comfortable to go into the shop. You will find this at https://www.gofundme.com/f/teulada-moraira-lions. This can also be accessed via our website or FB page. COSTA BLANCA NORTH
Note from Benny: More performance cancellations, more cautious dates estimated for 2021, and more heads dropped as this pandemic never appears to be ending. But our, amdram and singing groups both north and south of the Costa Blanca, have shown their fortitude by adapting in various ways. When entertainment venues and rehearsal facilities closed, some kept going through video links, others rehearsed in outside locations, and there were those who simply kept together by holding internal fun events whilst following social distancing and group regulations. One group even started to record radio one act plays from a garage. (Full story in this magazine.) This true-brit spirit is even more remarkable when you consider that the average age in most groups is in the older high-risk category. So well done all. Caprice Ladies Choir: The choir has enjoyed a brief return to live rehearsals in a safe, socially distanced outdoor setting. With the current new restrictions this is now more difficult, but they are determined to keep rehearsing, online if necessary and are still hoping to perform sometime next year. In the meantime, they send their best wishes to everyone. For more information contact musical director Aileen on 696 514 613 or via www.capriceladieschoir.com Cantãmus: The group hope to present the Cantata ‘Silence and the Sounds’ in the main Benissa church, (the church of the Purísima Xiqueta) at 16.00 on Friday 11 December. Masks are essential and social distancing will be maintained. Contact their musical director Philip Ashley on www.philipashley.com/cantamus Or call Eileen on 607 706 904. Everyone welcome, why not enjoy their beautiful Christmas music. Careline Theatre: Careline Theatre are having a great time preparing hopefully for their January's panto of 'Sleeping Beauty'. The set build is happening, and costumes are being made by their wonderful wardrobe mistress, Janet. I am told that smoke has been seen coming out of her sewing machine. Box Office open. See their FB page, Careline Theatre, Alcalali for corona virus updates. Info on 686 320 435. Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir: The choir have been rehearsing in Benitachell church by following strict social-distancing measures but the latest increase in coronavirus restrictions has meant they had to stop. They produced a virtual Remembrance Day event which was broadcast on Valley FM and is still available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/SJ0IaQ. They are still looking for more tenor voices, so if interested, contact: michaelhume4814@gmail.com
Oliva Drama: The group have produced their first simple radio play called `Fourteen´, set in 1920s New York. To listen to this, go to their website and click on the poster. Also, see the special feature on this group in this magazine. For more information, please email Kelvin on info@olivadrama.com visit their website www.olivadrama.com or see their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OlivaDrama. Phoenix Dancers: The dancers are still busy rehearsing, while socially distancing, but unfortunately will not be able to perform their usual `Christmas Show´ this year. They are all hoping for more positive news in the New Year and will be ready to entertain everyone in 2021. If anyone would like to join the group in preparation for the new year, please contact Phaedra on 607 290 896. They all wish everyone a merry Christmas and a very happy New Year! CHERYL'S NOT-SO
Page 33
SECRET COVID DIARY
Adapted by Benny Davis from original notes recorded by Cheryl Speer, Director, Oliva Drama. Location: Somewhere in the depth of the Oliva community. Year 2020. March 11: Only five more rehearsals left before launching our spring production: Hard work, but sure it will be well worth the effort. Can´t wait. March 14: Spanish government announces Corona 19 virus has invaded the country and declares a state of alarm resulting in a national lockdown. All rehearsal efforts up the creek. Production cancelled, feeling totally deflated and sorry for all involved. What´s next? March 27/28: Extra depression as we would have been performing in Bellreguard theatre on these dates. However, must think positive and encourage our wonderful team to look ahead, not backwards. Maybe a glass of wine will help? Or maybe two? April, May: Everyone hunkers down, jokes shared over discussions on where we go from here. Mostly not printable! June 1: positive action at last. We combine two storage units into one for the sets; refund all ticket sales resulting in large financial write off on show. Tripping over our bottom lips, we then disperse for our summer break, hoping for better things in September. September 8: Back again! Although situation not changed, raring to go! Annual General Meeting via newly discovered video zoom; elect new committee/board. September 18: Fresh start! New committee secret meeting. Discuss how to keep our partisans engaged. Use Zoom? Sent covert messages to all contacts asking for online audition volunteers. Positive response from only three persons. Seems that’s our total cast! Obviously, followers are more nervous about new-fangled camera technology than fighting the corona enemy. Looked at number of one act plays and decide on `Fourteen.´ October 2: First read-through via Zoom. First time acting director – me! First time technical director. Zoom experience totally new for all. Rehearsals scheduled via Zoom, three days a week, one hour a day. Late October: After numerous attempts at recording, encountered serious problems with technical issues. Images freezing, voice fluctuations, etc. So, decided to go with radio play, like the BBC Home Service programme, `Saturday Night Theatre.´ Thought: Wonder if Hitchcock had the same problem when he started? October 31: Cast meet in person on my secluded terrace and really get on well despite the hazards of masks and social distancing. November 6: Final rehearsal away from prying eyes. Last minute script rewrite as narrator wants fewer lines. November 7: After packing Spam sandwiches, several packets of Smiths crisps and a flask of steaming coffee, set off at 6.00am curfew lift for final recording at a secret garage location. Arrived to find tech engineer had added his own contribution to the essential emergency rations, a bottle of 103 brandy. The team arrived individually after surreptitiously winding their way through passages and remote back streets of the town to avoid any lurking Covid agents. Doors closed and sealed, sanitizer security checks completed, recording starts for real. After some hard sessions, leaving a few crumbs on plates and an empty flask and bottle in our wake, we finally got two good takes. More celebrations with a surprise donation of bubbly and chocolates from our actors. November 10: Myself and tech director final edit. After a few tweaks; sounds great but problems when transferred to MP3. Feel sorry for tech director, his job is never done! No bad luck this Friday the 13th: Final audio play done and dusted, distributed worldwide. Victory for the Covid oppressed. A ray of hope for everyone. To quote Winston Churchill: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.” Note: `Fourteen´ by Alice Gerstenberg, is a short play about a 1920s socialite's monumental struggle to save her much anticipated dinner party when everything goes wrong. You can access the play via website: www.olivadrama.com. Just click on the play poster. If you are impressed with this story and would like to support OCDA efforts, please donate a few euros to your local charity. The group have raised over 1500 euros for their charities.

New presentation of Amata’s Virtual Craft Village & Craft Fair.
O
n 1 November the Virtual Craft Village, set up recently by association Amata, underwent a noticeable face-lift. It is now much easier to use and adapts itself automatically to the small screens of mobile phones and tablets. At the same time, 10 new artisans started in their virtual fair, to sell their ceramics, crocheted soft toys, personalised linen bags, hand painted silk, mandalas painted on stones, leather handbags, hand woven shawls and mufflers and silver, leather or macramé jewellery. There are now three virtual fairs, each one with 10 stalls, showing up to 30 different products, as well as a video with more goods or with a craft demonstration. These virtual fairs are set up in the centre of the virtual village www.puebloartesano.es, where you can also watch the artisans at work in their workshops, buy their work in their shops and follow various tutorials. In the (Spanish and English) menu, you will see that there is a lot to do and to see, that makes a visit to this, still growing, virtual village worth while.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND – COSTA BLANCA CELEBRATING the LICENSING of Fr Marcus Ronchetti.
The service with Holy Eucharist was led by the Ven David Waller, Archdeacon of Gibraltar. The opening hymn was the lovely "All for Jesus" . One of the Chaplaincy Wardens, Martin Bentley read from Romans 12. Fr Marcus read the gospel lesson. A lovely sermon followed by the Archdeacon. Fr Marcus, appointed by the Diocesan Bishop moved to stand before the President, supported by the Chaplaincy Wardens, Diana and Martin. Various responses then followed and a Declaration of Assent by Fr Marcus. The License was read by the Archdeacon and then handed to Fr Marcus, followed by the Installation. Fr Marcus was then presented with a large jug of water "Lord, pour your love into our hearts" to which we all responded "and help us share this love with others. The other presentations were a Bible, a vessel of olive oil, bread and wine. Communion then followed and the final hymn "Let all the world in every corner sing”. The Archdeacon took communion. A truly beautiful service. Social distancing was maintained throughout the service. Please visit www.costablanca-anglicanchaplaincy.org for more information on our Churches and Services.

With LIBERTY SEGUROS you can have the home insurance that meets your needs!
LIBERTY SEGUROS has adapted its Home Insurance plans to provide solutions that best suit your individual requirements. Understanding that every customer’s needs are unique, it has created additional coverages to allow you to enhance and complement your home insurance cover. Regardless of the plan you choose, you can now add Optional Packs to your home insurance to ensure your plan is perfectly tailored to you. For example, if you own a second home and are concerned about being an ideal target for squatters, LIBERTY SEGUROS offers a complete legal defence guaranty, covering up to 6.100€ in legal costs for Illegal Occupation proceedings. Owning a rental property has additional worries, such as tenant vandalism that can lead to complex and expensive legal proceedings. For this reason, LIBERTY SEGUROS offers a guaranty of up to 3.000€ to cover acts of vandalism by the tenant. This allows landlords peace of mind to enjoy profitable rental incomes without added worries. LIBERTY SEGUROS also knows how much gardens and terraces mean to homeowners. For this reason, it offers cover for garden furniture of 12.000€ to help protect treasured outdoor spaces. Homeowners might have other worries too, such as drip irrigation systems. Again, with LIBERTY SEGUROS policy holders can have cover up to 500€ for burst or broken pipes to help with repairs. Goods in storage rooms can also be insured up to 3.000€; and jewellery left outside of a safe can be covered up to 10.000€. What’s more, individual jewellery pieces worth up to 6.000€ do not need to be itemised in the policy, and policy holders can increase their money in cash cover at home too.
It’s also worth noting that LIBERTY SEGUROS’s new home appliance repair cover includes 2 services per year up to 300€ – including parts. The maintenance of air-conditioning filters is also covered to include filter cleaning twice a year. In this manner, the units can continue to work just as they should, at the same time as helping occupants to avoid the health issues associated with their usage. And that’s not all! As another example, refrigerated goods (which are not usually covered in the case of tripped fuses) are included in home policies with LIBERTY SEGUROS, offering 150€ towards lost food and medicines. This comes as standard. LIBERTY SEGUROS really does have you covered and always has your real needs in mind! Furthermore, you can also take out additional covers such as a Civil Liability extension and non-payment of rents; or Mandatory Civil Liability for hunters, Civil Liability for potentially dangerous dogs, cover for vehicles kept in a garage… amongst others. And, as always, 24/7 emergency home assistance through a multilingual freephone number. What’s more, if you are a new Liberty Seguros client and take out a Home, Car, Life or Funeral policy now, you will receive 30€ Cashback on your first policy and 60€ from the second policy onwards, or 60€ Cashback on each new policy if you are already a customer. Great cover, great Cashback! For more information, simply call or visit one of the more than 300 LIBERTY SEGUROS qualified brokers and agents.
