Eye care tips for 2021
PECSAVERS Ópticas is urging people to make it their New Year’s Resolution to look after their eye health. While it is important everyone has their eyes tested regularly to spot signs and symptoms of any underlying problems, there are some more unusual things to spot and take action on to help keep your eyes healthy.
Get some sleep The New Year is definitely a time for catching up on some well needed sleep. Do you ever feel your eyes twitching from time to time? These uncomfortable and distracting spasms are known as myokymia and can often be caused by a lack of sleep. Louise Stone, store director and optometrist for Specsavers Ópticas Jávea and Calpe, says: ‘It’s essential that we all get enough sleep as it gives our bodies an opportunity to rest – including our eye muscles, which will help to stop them from twitching.’ Go for a walk Not only is exercising good for your overall health but it’s good for your eyes too. Louise says: ‘Studies have shown that regular exercise, such as walking, can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 70% and it can also decrease the risk of age-related cataracts too.’ Be Informed We appreciate it can be a struggle to get the right information when living in Spain as an expat – especially with the added language barrier. To provide support and advice, our website contains a range of useful information about eye conditions, frequently asked questions and why it’s important to have an eye test. Visit www.specsavers.es or visit your nearest Specsavers Ópticas to get your questions answered and have a complete eye test. You can find them in Jávea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca.

Well, like most I am glad to see the back of 2020 and am hopeful for a better 2021. Most importantly all the family are well, the grandchildren got the presents they hoped for at Christmas and via the wonders of modern technology we stayed in touch with family near and far. All being well, this year will be a more ‘normal’ one for everyone, but one thing that the past year has taught me is that health and happiness is much more important than anything else. Congratulations to Carol who won last month's competition after spotting the Curry On Cooking logo. For your chance to win a selection of Curry Kits this month, see inside for full details. Good luck. Congratulations to Sally Webster, winner of last month's Pure Organic CBD competition. y

4 time management tips for working smarter, not harder
Female Focus Magazine January 2021 Page 5 “Instead, working on the right things with no distractions, may allow you more time to spend with the people you love, or pursue something that gives you pleasure. Making realistic commitments also means you can account for time when you may need help.”
By Liz Connor, PA
Liz Connor speaks to business consultant Carina Lawson to find some simple time management tips for getting the most out of life.
It can seem impossible to find enough time to grow your side business or enjoy your hobbies alongside working a 9 to 5. Never mind fitting in family and home commitments.
With so many things demanding your attention and what feels like so little time to give to every single one, it can be difficult to focus on anything at all, and then you can easily start to feel like you’re falling behind. Carina Lawson is a time management coach and the founder of Ponderlily Planners (carinalawson.com), who helps her clients to make better decisions about how they spend their time. Here, she shares her top tips for feeling more fulfilled – whether that’s while working on a side business or finding time for the things you love. 1. Make space “Being away, even for a little while, can give you a fresh perspective, allow you to rest, and come back refreshed to better serve your family, friends, and work. “In your everyday, this could mean scheduling your Zoom meetings in blocks of time that give you some breathing room in between, so you can take a break, refocus, and bring your best energy to the next appointment. Not every minute of your every day needs to be planned.” 2. Call it like it is “Your work is not just your 9-5, but the place where you get to practise the skills for which you were trained. Your business is not just a side hustle, it’s where you get to unleash your creativity. “Changing the way we refer to the different parts of our lives makes us pay attention more closely to the important roles we are lucky to have. By changing the way you refer these things, you are giving each part the respect that it deserves.”
4. Compartmentalise your time like a pro In order to give each aspect of your life the attention and care it deserves, you need to give it undivided attention with professional precision.
3. Make realistic commitments “Sure, we’d love to get everything done in a day. However, it is often not realistic. The opportunity cost of working on your business every day, for four hours a day, may be that you exercise less, spend less time with your family, or have less time to yourself.” The same could be true for any creative projects you might want to start – decorating the house, making curtains or even just having a good clear out – all these things take time.
“When you’re at work, pause your business inbox on your phone, so you’re not constantly receiving notifications. You can also effectively use time-blocking, creating a habit of only checking your emails at specified intervals. And if you’re able to outsource some of your business activities to a virtual assistant while you are at work, even better. “Compartmentalising your time is a gift that allows you to turn your computer off, so you can shift your focus, fully – without giving the previous activity a second glance.” Focusing on one thing at a time, whether that’s work, a side business, family time or doing something for yourself, is often the answer to achieving more. Ciudad Patricia Celebrates Being Officially Recognised for Deployment During Covid19
By Elvira Koot – Sales & Quality Manger – Ciudad Patricia
At Ciudad Patricia, we take the welfare and safety of residents very seriously. During the Covid19 lockdown, we worked hard, taking extra measures to keep everyone safe and secure. Therefore, it was a great honour to have received recognition for this at a formal ceremony on 6th December, when Nadine Sweers (Manager Apartamentos Ciudad Patricia) and Barbara Acevedo (Director Nursing Home) were presented the official acknowledgement, signed by the Mayor of Benidorm. On 18th December, we invited the staff and residents of the entire resort in groups to celebrate this wonderful recognition - naturally in a Covid-safe way. Nadine Sweers (Location Manager) spoke on behalf of the management and thanked the entire team of Ciudad Patricia, including special attention to the caretakers, porter, reception, and cleaning staff who continued their work on site during these special tense times. Special mention was also given to our Doctor and the entire medical team who worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of everyone. Nadine also mentioned the important role that our residents played in keeping the resort safe by following all the rules correctly. All in all, it was a real team effort! Communication is vital in any organisation, especially in a company with more than 190 apartments and 20 staff. The management and administration team kept everyone informed by regularly sending letters about the new measures and the resulting rules we had to follow. The maintenance team took care of the daily disinfection of the residential buildings. Reception called the sole-occupants every day to check-in with them. Our Social worker Jayne did her best to take care of the flow of needs, including grocery shopping and picking up recipes for some residents and the restaurant offered both pick-up and delivery meals during the lockdown situation. As Mr & Mrs Fisher (left with Nadine), residents of Ciudad Patricia for 7 years, put it, "we were so well looked after and kept fully informed at all times. We are so happy that we were here during the lockdown and we really can't imagine that we had lived anywhere else". We continue to take all necessary measures to protect our residents as much as possible and together we look forward positively to 2021 where we hope to meet again with a little more freedom.

Walk Your Way Well
My entire life I have been in the club that enthusiastically commits to one of the top 10 typically favoured New Year’s Resolutions: 1. Exercise more 2. Save money 3. Eat more healthily 4. Lose weight 5. Reduce stress 6. Get more sleep 7. Quit alcohol or smoking 8. Focus on spiritual growth 9. Travel more 10. Learn a new skill Every year, I would go in full throttle convinced I could succeed. Inevitably, like 80% of the club, I would have failed miserably before we hit February. Anybody else relate to that? In January 2019 I quit drinking booze. I begrudgingly started to consider that MAYBE I had an unhealthy relationship with red wine and decided to have a break. Just to lose a few kilos. Unlike previous years where I felt truly convinced I’d easily triumph in my latest resolution whim, this time round I was pretty sure I’d fail by wine o’clock (that’s 7ish on a civilised day). But no! This New Year’s Day I had spectacularly failed by lunch time! Out with friends for our first meal together of the year I got thirstily stuck into the cheap plonk and sheepishly readjusted my New Year’s resolution to kickstart on January 7th, the day after the Three Kings Celebration. This would undoubtedly be a much more suitable date. Waking on the 2nd of January I didn’t have a raging hangover or flashbacks of any shameful behaviour. I simply had a drastic
by Niamh O'Sheehan
sense of disappointment. It’s at this point that one routinely caves, loses their resolve and convinces themself that it’s not possible. But, on the 2nd of January 2019 I didn’t have my usual knee jerk reaction to my failure. On the 2nd of January 2019 I went for a very long and enlightening walk in nature. Cutting to the chase, on this walk I decided to embrace my disappointment and use it as fuel. Fuel that would give me the energy to “not drink today”. And, for the first time in a VERY long time I did not drink a drop of vino tinto on the 2nd of January. On the 3rd of January I decided that I’d enjoyed my walk so much the day before that I’d trot out again on another decent hike. Feeling refreshed, energised and bizarrely positive I decided to not have any wine that day either. You might think I say this lightly, but anyone who knows me well, or anyone that has a strong addiction to alcohol, knows that 2 days in a row is a small miracle. In summary, my New Year’s resolution morphed into something entirely different. Rather than simply DEPRIVING myself of something I adjusted the terms and conditions of my contract. I set a challenge to walk 300kms in January. And, that’s where my focus became redirected. Don’t get me wrong, it was a huge struggle every day to not drink. But, the distraction of my walking challenge, the feelings of freedom and rejuvenation from the stunning routes I discovered all combined to make my Dry January an incredible journey of perseverance and discovery. On some of my walks I’d have the company of an audiobook in my ear telling me both frightening and enlightening grog related facts and fiction. So, the peculiar thing was that after a tremendous month of discovery and clarity I was still gasping to go back to my old ways and crack open a bottle of wine. So, there was only one thing to do. Keep going. Keep walking. Keep not drinking. Let’s jump up the page again to that top 10 list I mentioned earlier. Imagine this! In quitting booze and taking up a new hobby (walking) I had unwittingly accomplished all ten goals! Sounds easy right? Well, it’s not, but it is so majestically worth the effort. If I could package and sell the feeling of freedom that quitting booze gives a person, I’d be wealthier than all the breweries combined times infinity. If you think you could do with a readjustment and booze is holding you back I’ve got two pieces of advise that I can offer from my own experience. Firstly; reach out. Understand you are not the only one. I signed up to a Facebook forum called OYNB (One Year No Beer) and was blown away by the fact that there were many other working mums of three kids struggling with the demon drink. It was a revelation to realise that I wasn’t a freak at all. Seems boozy mums are dime a dozen! My second piece of advice is to Walk Your Way Sober! This will fill your newfound spare time, give you a distraction and offer you an incredible sense of general wellbeing to compliment your healing body and mending mind. Nature has a profound effect on our brains and behaviour. I suggest you literally drink it up. It’s the most amazing elixir and the high it offers does the complete opposite to booze: walking decreases anxiety, diminishes depression, improves memory retention, increases cardiovascular health, reduces body fat.... Shall I go on or have I subtly made my point?
2020 was a tough year. There is absolutely no guarantee that 2021 will be any better. But YOU can be better. You have the power. Let’s give it a shot. Let’s Walk our Way Well.

Award-Winning Client Service.
We hope everyone had a lovely festive period, even if it was a little different this time round. Hopefully 2021 will bring back some normality to our lives and we can look forward to a year full of positivity and prosperity. Reflecting on last year, it is fair to say that 2020 was a tough test for lots of people in terms of work, and a year which many will be happy to forget. Thankfully for us however, it was our best year yet as our unique business model continued to shine through in such difficult times. As many of the regular readers will know by now, we pride ourselves on offering a personal service to our clients, something which we have been told sets us apart from our competitors. Our professional and transparent way of working sits well with clients and the continuity of regulated advice (and adviser!) has started to reap rewards. At the back end of 2020, Logic received its first major European award, winning “Excellence in Client Service” for Europe. The annual awards, which are hosted by International Adviser, reward financial advisers around the globe for putting best practice at the forefront of their business models. In total, there were 6 categories in the European awards, including “Excellence in Digital Innovation” and “Excellence in Marketing”, but we felt the most significant category to enter was Excellence in Client Service as this is at the heart of everything a customer service company should strive to deliver on. We feel extremely proud to be recognised for the hard work we put in to provide our clients with the best service possible and look forward to continuing this through 2021 and beyond. As always, we offer free no-obligation consultations to all new clients, so if you have any financial concerns, why not give us a call?

e are all hoping for a much better year this year. But accidents, emergencies and illness do happen, and they will always will. In many medical emergencies receiving rapid expert attention, and getting to hospital as quickly as possible, can be the difference between life and death. But with so many of us here in Spain living in remote rural areas, often down tracks and windy lanes without clear road names and not covered by Google maps, many of our homes are extremely hard to find. And vital minutes could be lost. Thankfully, covering the area from Oliva to Calpe AND MOST OF THE INLAND TOWNS AND VILLAGES, being a member of the private ambulance service Asociacion Amigos Europeos takes away all of the worry of you not being found. When you join, Laure Bolufer the Registration Manager will work with you to pinpoint exactly where your house is on the map, and establish the fastest route to it, and this and other information will be recorded in their system. Your address details, your medical records, your current medication levels and your personal details will all be carried in the on-board computers throughout their fleet of state-of-the-art ambulances. So should you ever be taken ill, all you have do is call the 24/7 emergency telephone number 96 579 6099. You don't even have to say your name, just give your Membership number, and the closest ambulance will be immediately dispatched and speeding on its way to you. The Asociacion Amigos Europeos work with all the Private Clinics and Hospitals (in Denia, Moraira, Benidorm etc) as well as the State Hospitals. This is important because rather than just taking you to the nearest State Hospital as a State Ambulance would be duty bound to do, the Asociacion Amigos Europeos ambulance will hurry you to the most appropriate hospital for your particular urgent medical condition, or to any other Private Hospital or Clinic that you nominate. Membership of the Asociacion Amigos Europeos is just 55€ for the whole year for the whole family. Over 4,200 members already enjoy this important ambulance cover, and once you, too, are a Member should you or one of your family members ever need to call on their services, it could be just like winning the lottery, making all the difference to your health and full recovery.

HELP YOUR FEET LAST A LIFETIME
D
iabetes is a chronic condition where the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. The pancreas may not produce any or enough insulin or the insulin it does produce doesn’t work effectively to allow the glucose to enter your body’s cells.
The most common form of diabetes is Type 2 and this may be brought on by several risk factors including; • Being overweight • High fat & cholesterol levels • High blood pressure • Smoking • A sedentary lifestyle
So, what does this have to do with your feet? One of the complications from diabetes is the loss of sensation in your feet and or poor circulation meaning a lower amount of blood flow to your feet. This can mean you may not feel, for example, a pebble in your shoe or a blister. With decreased blood flow this small abrasion can get infected and lead to more serious problems. If you are diabetic there are a number of things you can do to reduce the risk of these complications; • If you can, check your feet every day, look for small cuts, sores, infected toenails. • Wash your feet every day in warm and not hot water, do not soak your feet. • Moisturise your feet regularly, avoiding between your toes. • See a professional foot specialist to remove any callus (hard skin) or corns. Do not use corn plasters or callus removers. • Have your toenails professionally trimmed regularly, especially if thickened. • Use good quality footwear, preferably with socks and don’t walk about barefoot.
Wet wipes, condoms, sanitary products, nappies and cotton buds do not belong down the toilet
• Have a professional foot specialist regularly check your feet for any loss of sensation or circulation issues.
Maybe with the restrictions associated with COVID 19 you haven’t had your feet checked as regularly? As a foot health professional, I use full PPE and when visiting your home I take every precaution to ensure patient safety. If you are a diabetic I would recommend regular appointments to help avoid any complications. Even if you are not a diabetic, regular foot treatments feel great and help those feet last a lifetime! Having diabetes can be well managed through guidance from your doctor, healthy lifestyle choices and diet. Having your feet checked regularly could ensure more serious complications are avoided. Jared Bollington is a qualified foot health professional who will visit you in the comfort of your own home.

Podiatrists and you
P
odiatrists are specialists that treat foot related conditions. Some of the more common being ingrown toenails, nail fungus, calluses or simply the trimming of your toenails.
More in-depth problems are: Diabetes: If you are a diabetic then come to see our podiatrist who is a specialist in treating the many problems that the disease can cause due to nerve damage. Arthritis and Osteoporosis: Inflammation, swelling, and wear and tear to your joints and bones. Having an Achilles Bone densitometry is extremely beneficial to assess if you are suffering with Osteoporosis without the use of any radiation and the results being given immediately. Heel Spurs: A build-up of calcium at the bottom of your heel bone. This can be caused from excess running, ill-fitting shoes, or being overweight. Also, Plantar fasciitis is where the connective tissue along the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed. Shoe inserts can relieve both of these conditions. Hallux Valgus Bunions: A bunion occurs when the joint at the base of the big toe gets bigger or knocked out of place making the toe bend toward the others, a podiatrist can perform a simple operation in the surgery to correct this. If you have any type foot problems or would like to have a Bone Densitometry test, then contact us at Clinica Britannia for your appointment.

Everyone deserves the best hair day, every day and every hair type & hair colour can benefit from being healthier.
D
amage can occur through something as simple as brushing your hair as well as chemical damage, sun damage and overall use of heated appliances, i.e. straighteners. The best way to stay on top of it is by treating the hair regularly with OLAPLEX, the globally acclaimed product range, now in stock at MimisKru. Let’s explain how... The science bit…There are three layers in every hair that make up the ‘hair shaft’. The cuticle is the outer layer and is responsible for protecting the inner layers from damage. The colour and texture part of the hair originates in the cortex in the middle of the shaft which contains all the bonds. The integrity of each hair shaft is compromised when bonds are broken, whether by chemicals, thermal, mechanical styling or environmental factors. Until OLAPLEX, a haircut was the only way to solve bond damage in the hair. Now, with OLAPLEX, we’re able to relink those broken disulfide bonds and create a permanent change to the internal structure of the hair. Denise and Linda Nolan on why flu jabs are more important than ever
By Lisa Salmon, PA.
For those in at-risk groups, as well as people living with them, getting vaccinated against flu could be life-saving. Lisa Salmon finds out more. It might be just over two months since Linda Nolan ‘rang the bell’ to mark the end of her chemotherapy for secondary breast cancer, but right now she’s joining forces with her sister on another health campaign. Linda and Denise Nolan, who enjoyed huge success in the Seventies and early-Eighties singing with fellow family members, are highlighting the importance of getting a flu jab – particularly for people who are more vulnerable to infections like flu or Covid-19, or who live with someone who is. When Linda, 61, discovered she had cancer for the third time in June – she was first diagnosed with breast cancer back in 2006 – Denise immediately asked her to move in with her and her partner, Tom Anderson. “There was no hesitation,” admits Linda. “It was really kind and I would have been lost without her.” For Denise, it was a totally natural offer. “It’s just family,” she says. “You do it because you love them.” Flu jabs help protect vulnerable and at-risk groups Because of the cancer and chemo, a flu jab was vital for Linda. Living together meant that as ‘flu season’ approached, Denise was also eligible for a free jab (in the UK). “Because Linda’s isolating and – I don’t like to call myself her carer – because we live together, I was told I’d get the jab free, because you do if you’re looking after somebody that’s isolating,” explains Denise, 68. “It’s a no-brainer. The thought of giving flu to Linda is incomprehensible, and my chap has Parkinson’s so he’s vulnerable too. Any disease like the flu, if they got it from me, I’d be absolutely devastated.” Flu can be very serious Ever-bubbly Linda jokes that her older sister won’t wear a nurse’s uniform when she’s caring for her. But, becoming serious for a moment, she stresses: “If I get the flu, I’d probably die. The way things are at the moment, I could get Covid as well and then I wouldn’t stand a chance, because my immune system has been completely depleted.
Discovery/Quest Red/PA
iStock/PA It’s a really scary thing, and when I got the letter to isolate it became so real.” The sisters, who live in their home town of Blackpool – Linda’s house is only a few doors down from Denise and a couple of streets away from Maureen – say people needn’t be scared of going to the GP surgery or pharmacy for their jab, as “they’re the safest places to be at the moment because they have to be”. Linda stresses: “It’s so safe, and it’s much safer than getting flu or pneumonia.” Denise adds: “For a couple of seconds of discomfort – although it’s not really discomfort – you can prevent some people being very, very ill or even dying. We’ve had enough of fatalities this year, and our hearts go out to all those people who’ve lost family in this awful pandemic, but it doesn’t have to be that way with flu, which can be prevented.” ‘I feel good’ Right now, Linda – who’s currently appearing with her sisters in At Home With The Nolans (Tuesdays, Quest Red) – is awaiting the results of a scan that was done after her chemotherapy ended, and happily says: “I feel good at the moment.” She had the chemo during England’s first national lockdown, at the same time as her sister Anne, 70, who discovered her own breast cancer had returned just days before Linda found out about her cancer recurrence. Their other sister Bernie died from breast cancer in 2013 aged just 52, and while tests have shown the sisters don’t have the infamous BRCA1 & 2 ‘breast cancer genes’, Linda says: “We were told by one of the professors it’s not just bad luck that three of us have got it – there will be a rogue gene somewhere. Maureen, Denise and Coleen have seen somebody about another test; they’re looking into all of that, trying to find out why we get it.” Until they know more, Denise says: “You just have to be vigilant, checking yourself regularly. And it’s important to look in the mirror as well, because that’s how Bernie found hers – one of her breasts was a funny shape, it had dimpling or something, it wasn’t a lump she found initially.” The flu jab: A doctor’s view GP Dr Sarah Jarvis says it’s vital people don’t become complacent about flu, just because the current focus is on COVID-19. “While it’s possible the number of cases of flu may be lower than usual this year because of social distancing, flu definitely hasn’t gone away,” Jarvis stresses. “In fact, it’s more important than ever this year to get vaccinated for flu. Recent research shows the risk of death more than doubles for people who test positive for both flu and Covid-19, compared to those with Covid-19 alone. “Both seasonal influenza and Covid-19 can cause serious illness and death. They can both spread easily and infect many people. Good respiratory hygiene, hand hygiene and distancing should help reduce the spread of both infections.” “To reduce the risk, it’s essential as many people as possible should be protected against flu. Having the flu vaccination doesn’t just protect you: it protects vulnerable people you’re in contact with too.”
To find out more about the flu vaccine, contact your GP or pharmacist.

It’s been a strange year for most of us. As a pool technical specialist, one thing we’ve seen is more people spending time in their villa and enjoying their pool. That is, until something goes wrong. That’s where we come in. At Pool Technical Services (PTS), we specialise in the building, maintenance and repairs of pools of all shapes and sizes. It’s surprisingly technical work for which we’ve invested heavily in all sorts of diagnosis equipment. It usually starts with a phone call saying something like “We’ve got a small leak in our pool and we’ve tried to fix it, but it just keeps coming back”. What we usually find is that an unqualified person has simply scraped away a bit of grouting and put some fresh grouting in its place. It might work for a while, but it’s never going to fix the problem. It needs more than just a sticking plaster. At PTS, we always start with trying to find the real cause of the problem. Sadly, we find that in many cases the pool has been constructed wrongly. When constructing a pool, you start with a steel cage. This needs to be made with steel bars of the right thickness. This ensures the integrity of the pool. Then you add the concrete, again of the correct spec, then add a waterproof coating layer, then tiled and grouted, and of course filled. Throughout this process, plumbing is built in for filters and heating etc. Most repairs we do are where the steel cage is compromised because the steel bars making up the cage are simply too thin. It saves money initially, but, in time, the pool will leak.
You might be wondering how we can diagnose this in a completed pool. This is where our investment in many different types of diagnostic equipment comes in. Our latest piece if equipment is an electro-magnetic scanner which can tell us where the steel bars are, how thick they are, and how far under the surface they are. We can build up a complete picture of the pool, and we know exactly where the problems are. That way, we can embark on a repair to the pool which we can be sure is the correct repair, ensuring years of problem free pool use.
● If you’re in a position where you have a leaking pool and you want it fixed properly, call Pool Technical Services on 679 637 623 or 965 744 821 and we’ll pop round and give you an initial assessment.

AIR-CON HEATING: SAVE 80% ON TRADITIONAL HEATING?
W
By K&M Air Conditioning (a proud member of the CBBA)
inter is here in Spain, and even though it’s not as cold as in the UK, it certainly feels chilly. It still amazes us how many people are using bar heaters etc in the winter and just living with their unnecessarily large electricity bill. But did you know that with a new aircon system, you can get the same amount of heat for only 20% of the cost of traditional electric heaters. Here’s the science bit so pay attention. Air conditioning works by pressurising gas. The recently introduced R32 gas, when pressurised, boils at -51ºC so it needs relatively little electricity to drive the compressor. Additionally new systems use ½ the amount of gas of older systems which means even less electricity. The other thing to note is that these systems use approximately 0.7Kw of energy and produce around 4Kw of heat (with bar heaters, you need 4Kw of energy for 4Kw of heat). If you’re wondering why 4Kw is important, that’s how much you need to heat an average sized living room.
One thing to note, we often get asked where the element is. The short answer is – there isn’t one. It’s old technology and aircon simply doesn’t work this way! So when you consider the cost of electricity for your average sized living room, traditional electric heaters are going to cost you around 0,80€* per hour, with an aircon system just 0,14€** per hour – and that’s nearly 6x cheaper! Or put it this way – more than 80% savings!
● We supply and install aircon systems from all leading suppliers throughout the Northern Costa Blanca. To find out more, either call us on 965 874 838 or email info@km-aircon.com. Our shop is in Calpe in Calle Pintor Sorolla. We look forward to seeing you!
(*calculations may vary depending on your tariff) (**calculation depends on actual aircon unit and your electricity tariff)

ENJOY YOUR GARDEN IN 2021
Page 24 Well I can’t believe it has happened, the new year is here and we can finally say good bye to 2020. What a year. Hopefully, we can all move forward.
www.femalefocusonline.com
I have, towards the end of 2020, been visiting new clients who have started to have particular ideas towards what they want in the garden (more to do with planting than actual hard landscape design) Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth but that’s great. The planting is the essence of the garden and gives it flavour, but more importantly it can lead towards a style accent. I have always said we can design and build what our clients want and within reason we are starting to get more of this and it’s great. Because the clients are starting to look more at what style of planting they want the garden to have, it is really lending itself to the overall style and for want of a better word, theme of the garden. When I say theme, it’s not a corny thing it’s more the subtle details. For example, the shape and texture of a render, the shape of a wall, and the colour can all summon different style flavours, just through shape, texture and colour, so it is great to be given what is in essence a full idea of what someone is wanting to achieve for their garden. I may still plan the layout of a garden in the same way, but again, by changing the shape of the wood of a gazebo, the tiles on a wall or floor, then add the planting, we can achieve very different looks.

Being able to help a client ¨put down in words¨ for want of a better expression, is very gratifying for me, being able to take the spark of interest and inspiration they have and turn into a reality is exactly what I enjoy doing with garden design and landscaping. It also verifies to me the fact that I know what I am doing is correct, when they say things like - it’s exactly what they were thinking or it’s even better than what they were thinking - is always a special moment for me. Through my journey of design, I have always known that I wanted to work with people directly, and creating something, and dealing with clients one on one and knowing I have successfully achieved my goals and their aspirations, is exactly what it’s about. So if your thinking about making changes to your garden space, have an idea you have seen, or some plants you like the shape of, but have no idea how to put it together, then contact the company who specialise 100 % in the job, Charlesworth Gardens. PHILIP SOUNDS POSITIVE!
T
his month, Benny Davis takes a look at the musical theatre company, ‘Sounds Familiar’.
With a pedigree of performing over twenty-one musical revues, `Sounds Familiar´ has been transferring the glamour and sparkle of London’s top West End entertainment to the Costa Blanca for the last twelve years. Their amazing accomplishments have included a cornucopia of musical extracts from productions including, `Book of Mormon´, `Sweet Charity´, `Chicago´, `Seven Brides for Seven Brothers´, `Whistle Down The Wind´, `Les Miserable´, `Miss Saigon´, `Oklahoma,´ `Mary Poppins´, `My Fair Lady´ and many, many others, including a full scale production of `A Christmas Carol´. During this period, true to local amdram heartfelt dedication, they have raised over 15,000€ for local charities and good causes.
Although there is a core element of around fifteen cast members, only five have been performing with the group since the beginning, and one stalwart board-treader, has performed in every single production. Founder and musical director, Philip Ashley, says his philosophy is that although the aim is to present a production as professional as possible, the experience should be enjoyable for all. "We work extremely hard at rehearsals and always start with musical choreography, blocked to utilise each individual’s ability. Like most other amdram groups here in Spain, our members are in the older age bracket, so all movement and costumes are designed to be age appropriate. " `Sounds Familiar´ are fortunate to have their own rehearsal space thanks to local sponsors, automobile dealers, Automart Benissa. Like many other groups in this awful Covid19 climate, `Sounds Familiar´ are not meeting at present, but are hopeful of getting together again in the new year, with a view of staging a production during June or July. At the end of the interview, Philip added a positive note saying that not only does he aim at continuing their musical adventurers including the very popular and well attended series of colourful revues, but to ultimately stage a full-blown musical production with all its trimmings. Out of interest Philip, `42nd Street´ has a cast of 58 and Stephen Sondheim's `Marry Me a Little´ lists just one male and one female. Take your pick and break a leg! The photo shows a scene from the musical, 'Something Rotten'.

COSTA BLANCA NORTH
Note from Benny: Same old, same old. Some performance cancellations, some positive bookings, and some adaptations for more social-like activity just to keep things together. Nice to read that a few groups are also trying to adapt to radio and video productions instead of just shutting down until things get better. Unfortunately, some will disappear from the amdram scene altogether as the future does not seem to be very promising until late this year – and even then, not a definite turn of fortunes is forecast. We need the amdram and music scene, we need their wonderful charity funding, and we need this true-brit determination to continue regardless that the average age in most groups is in the older high-risk category. Please support these groups wherever they are in whatever way you can. Cantãmus: After the success of all three of their Christmas concerts, Cantãmus: will begin this new year with new music. This friendly group meets every Monday at 10.45 until 13:00 It’s a good time to come and join us. Info from Musical Director Philip Ashley on www.PhilipAshley.com/Cantãmus, or call Eileen: 607 706 904. Caprice Ladies Choir: The Choir are continuing to rehearse both online and in small groups when allowed within the restrictions and are looking forward to presenting some new songs to their audiences hopefully sometime in 2021. For more information, please contact musical director Aileen at: 696 514 613, or check their website www.capriceladieschoir.com Careline Theatre: `Sleeping Beauty´ tickets now on sale for the fun filled pantomime. Queen `Gigglebelly´ and `King Rumbletum´ will delight you with their daughter `Princess Beauty´ and all the wonderful panto characters in this classic story of good and bad, including their very own Fairy Godmothers and the naughty evil, `Olga Pong.´ Show dates from Fri 15th at 19.30, Sat 15th/Sun 17th at 14.30 and 19.30, Fri 22nd at 19.30 and Sat 23rd at 14.30 and 19:30. Book Online at: www.carelinetheatre.net. Enquiries only to carelineboxoffice@gmail.com Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir: The Choir has now been forced to stop rehearsals due to the ever-increasing restrictions on social distancing and sadly were unable to hold their Christmas Carol Concert. They hope to be able to return to normal in sometime this year when Covid-19 is hopefully, under control. Meanwhile, please visit their website www.costablancamalevoicechoir.wikidot.com or contact Mike Evans tikievans@gmail.com for more information.
Oliva Drama: After the success of its first radio play, the innovative Oliva Drama Company is currently in rehearsals for a short skit written by one of its members. This one will be a video, so watch this space for the upcoming release. For more information, please email Kelvin on: info@olivadrama.com or visit their website: www.olivadrama.com. Also see their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/OlivaDrama. Phoenix Dancers: The Dancers are having a rest from rehearsals until after 3 Kings, but we would like to take this opportunity of wishing all their friends an incredibly happy New Year and hope that 2021 will be the start of something good for everyone. They look forward to being able to help many charities next year with one of their great shows or taking part in a show already organised. You can always get in touch by telephoning Phaedra: 607 290 896. Sounds Familiar: Sounds Familiar are looking forward to their next production `Magic of the Musicals´ to be performed this year. If you are interested in joining the group when rehearsals start, or would like more information, please contact Philip on 96 558 1483 or philip@soundsfamiliar.es Valley Voices: The Voices are continuing to rehearse every Monday outside in small groups, following strict Covid guidelines. Just before the Christmas break, a small section of the choir entertained bowlers at El Cid, Pedreguer prior to their Christmas meal where 185€ was raised to help the homeless shelters in Gandia. The choir restarts on Jan 14th honing and improving their repertoire ready for a future concert. Local Freemasons help the Red Cross distribute presents to needy children.
This year has seen a great increase in the number of local families who are struggling financially, particularly due to the various lockdowns and the general restrictions placed on both businesses and families. So, when the Javea based Red Cross launched an appeal for Christmas presents, for needy children, our “Dinner Ladies” set to and raised a magnificent sum of more than seven hundred euros. The ‘Dinner Ladies’ are the wives and partners of the Freemasons of Javea Lodge No 40. This fantastic sum was enough to fill twenty large bags with gifts for the boys and girls aged between three and sixteen years. Pictured here is Mrs Margaret March with Mrs Muriel Shilan the wife of our Provincial Grand Master, and RW Bro Michael Shilan himself, whose shop, “Humpty Dumpty”, received some of the many gifts. Shown here with the car loaded ready to deliver to the Red Cross depot in Jávea. Margaret and the Red Cross wish to thank all the Ladies for their generosity. RW Bro Michael Shilan also congratulated the ladies on their tremendous effort. Hopefully, these children will have a better Christmas than they would otherwise have had. Many, many thanks to all the generous and warm-hearted donors who gave so many gifts.
U3A Marina Baixa December news
For their Christmas Picnic, 14 members of the Sunday Strollers Group, broke with tradition and walked on a Monday. Organised by the Group Leader Andy, they all brought something Christmas related, which included mince pies, Christmas cake, sausage rolls, biscuits etc. plus cava and beer. To celebrate the end of term, 16 members of the Spanish Language groups enjoyed a lovely meal. A range of beautiful gifts were presented to their tutor. Classes resume on 13 January. 38 Members of the Wine and Dine Group visited Restaurant Transylvania in Albir, where they had a fantastic pre-Christmas meal, which was enjoyed by all. They had the restaurant all to themselves and were safely well spaced out.
If you have not heard of this Association and would like to join them, you can be assured of a very warm welcome. Please visit the website www.u3amarinabaixa.com to find out more information there is also a Facebook page. TM Lions working with Moraira Cáritas Food Bank
We can all appreciate that the Corona Virus situation has had a serious impact on many in our community. The Cáritas Food Bank in Moraira has seen first-hand how the lack of work has impacted local families. They are currently supporting over 350 people in this area alone – this is a large increase over what they would expect at this time of year. The local food bank receives regular donations from the central Cáritas stores, but on occasions, the supply chain has been delayed or there have been specific requirements for certain items. Teulada Moraira Lions support the excellent work of this charity and are happy to respond to requests for help. We are seeing more requests from them in response to the increased demand. We were delighted to pass on the 250€ from the recent Ladies Race Day event plus a further 500€ from our funds. We continue to work closely with John Evans, the local Cáritas Co-ordinator and will continue to help where we can. There are collecting boxes in some of the local Pepe La Sal supermarket stores - the large one on the Calpe Road and the one above the Lions’ Den, where items of food or toiletries can be deposited for those in need. These will go straight to Caritas. The donations the TM Lions make are only possible because of the generosity of our supporters. Fund raising remains difficult under the current restrictions, but we were able to make this money available and will continue to do so as long as we can. To help us in this endeavour, please pop into the Lion's Den charity which can be found a couple of doors away from Letters R Us beneath the Pepe La Sal supermarket on the Centro Comercial, Moraira, just past the fountain roundabout on Ctra Moraira-Teulada. We also have a GoFundMe page if you would like to support us but do not yet feel comfortable to go into the shop. You will find this at https://www.gofundme.com/f/teulada-moraira-lions. This can also be accessed via our website or FB page. Please help us to help those in need in our area. If you are interested in finding out more about our work and possibly joining Teulada Moraira Lions, you can find more details on our webpage - www.tmlions.com The photo shows the TM Lions Welfare Officer Barry Chapman with one of the Cáritas volunteers
