Specsavers Ópticas unveils new

Levi’s® collection

I

CONIC denim brand Levi’s® is launching a stylish new eyewear collection with Specsavers Ópticas this autumn, evoking the appeal of the free-spirited California lifestyle integral to the brand’s DNA.

The 12-strong collection draws inspiration from Levi’s® unrivaled brand heritage, taking colour cues from its classic denim collections – deep black and a myriad of blues. Retro-inspired shapes recall the ‘blue jeans’ craze of the 1960s and 1970s and are modernised by their innovative use of materials. Bianca Sarre, Specsavers’ style expert, says: ‘Levi’s® is a brand that needs no introduction. From its early beginnings creating hard-wearing workwear to establishing itself as an international wardrobe staple, it is world-famous for its denim and casualwear, which is why we’re delighted to be adding Levi’s® to our ever-expanding designer ranges.’ The collection includes one exclusive frame (LEVI’S 4) available only at Specsavers Ópticas. The Levi’s® collection is priced at 129€ for two pairs. Levi’s® join Specsavers Ópticas’ unique range of designer brands, which includes other British and International designers such as HUGO, Cath Kidston, Kylie Minogue eyewear collection, DKNY, Karen Millen, Superdry and Tommy Hilfiger. ● You can find Specsavers Ópticas in Jávea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia on the Costa Blanca. s I suspected, the demand for TIE/Residencia appointments is very quickly increasing. It is vital that if you have not got your Residencia and you wish to stay in Spain after 31/12/20, you need to get your TIE sorted now, or as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, if you do not do this, the laws will be changing and you will need a vast amount of money held in your bank account and a proven monthly figure of income. I have heard a number of times, “I am British and therefore I am not panicking as there will be different rules in place for us after Brexit”. What a very silly and naive idea, because being British will mean even less than it does already after 1st January 2021, especially within the EU. We will just become normal immigrants and have the correct papers in place just to visit and live in Europe. With all this dreadful COVID situation, Brexit is also going to take its toll, both here but especially in the UK. I feel very fortunate to live in Spain because the news from the UK is worrying. So I am determined to make sure that I and all my staff are in possession of all the required paperwork within the timescale allocated, so we can continue to give exactly the same, excellent service to our clients. For your TIE/Residencia application, you will require health insurance and if you are thinking to cancelling it at the end of the first year, you would be very foolish to do so, because you may find yourself with no health cover at all and paying privately is not an option as it can be very expensive. ASSSA health insurance provides the correct certificate for your application. I do appreciate that many are not used to having private health insurance but life changes and you will require it to continue living in Spain. You will be very surprised at the premium, as in comparison to British private health prices, it is remarkably inexpensive. ● If you need any further information or an appointment to discuss your requirements, please contact one of my offices, visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net or email info@jennifercunningham.net.

As I write this the clocks are changing and the duvet is back out on the bed. The heating has been checked and I am washing socks and jumpers again.

Many of you are thinking ahead to Christmas and, although it is going to be a different type of Christmas for many, there seems to be a general consensus to make the best of it. One of the things I have done is to start an early reverse advent calender, putting something in a box each day to make Christmas a bit better for those who are struggling this year. If you are in a position to help someone please do, if you are in need of help, please ask. Although we are not facing the same struggles, if we all reach out, we can get through this together. Congratulations to J. French who won last month's competition after spotting the Curry On Cooking logo. For your chance to win a selection of Curry Kits this month, see inside for full details. Congratulations to Albert Barens of La Xara, winner of last month's Pure Organic CBD competition. The Montgó Chorale choir In line with every other performing group, the choir has had to adjust its performance expectations and rehearsal practices this year! Before the summer break the choir practised in groups using Zoom which at least gave the choir Director, Aileen Lightfoot, a chance to be in touch with the choir members and indicate to members how their own “in house” practices should go. And glasses were raised via Zoom at a “Summer Party”! However since September the choir has, thankfully, been able to rehearse together live … albeit only half the choir at a time. A choir member kindly lends the singers a wonderfully placed back courtyard for a limited number of singers, all suitable socially distanced and there, twice a week, the choir groups are rehearsing Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn and other choral compositions in anticipation of possible concerts next year. Sadly, due to current restrictions, the traditional Christmas choir concert in Jávea will not take place this year but Montgó Chorale hopes to perform as soon as possible in 2021. The choir FaceBook page is Montgo Chorale – Choir, regularly updated with choir information and photographs. Any queries re choir membership and future concert plans can be posted there or email to Sally Merrett at montgochorale@gmail.com.

On Tuesday 1 December the Cantãmus choir will be giving two performances at the Ermita San Josep at La Fustera of the Christmas Cantata, "The Silence and the Sound". Filled with original sacred songs and beloved carols, this innovative cantata is a beautiful concert moment. The richness of both contemporary and traditional elements, along with thoughtful narrations, make this work more than just a re-telling of the nativity. Cantãmus hope that the cantata and other music chosen will be enjoyed by their audiences and help to uplift the spirit in these odd times. To comply with social distancing regulations the seating will be limited at each performance. The concert will be therefore be performed twice, at 15:00 and 19:30, pre-booking is essential to ensure your seat. Tickets can be obtained from members of Cantãmus, or by calling 965 581 483 or online at www.philipashley.com. Tickets are priced at 10€ and there will be a bar available. (Doors open half and hour before the start of the concert). A portion of the ticket sales will be donated to Caritas and the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy.

English teacher Zooms in to help struggling pupils

N

o one can deny that 2020 has been a difficult year. In particular for those in education. With many months away from school, children are now feeling the stress of trying to catch up and parents are left wondering how they can support their son or daughter.

With over 25 years of teaching experience, I now tutor English to many children who are currently in that position. Those who ask for help feel they are out of their depth or lacking in confidence in class and the last thing they want is to feel left behind. If your child is aged 11 or above and requires further support in their English lessons then I am here to help. Whether it is to support their current English curriculum at school or to focus on specific areas then I can help get them back on track. My lessons are conducted through Zoom and you would be mistaken to think this might be a little technical or impersonal. I offer a free 30 minute session via Zoom so those not too familiar with the system can try it out. This introductory session also allows time to discuss what we would include in lessons and what your child’s specific needs are. I can also show you how to screen share to access my teaching resources so you and your child will feel relaxed and comfortable whilst being taught in your own home. I have many wonderful students who have progressed in English whatever their level or ability. I have a great deal of experience with those who have special educational needs. Giving a child time to learn encourages them to progress. Parents who book lessons with me have noticed a marked difference in their child’s work. Here is a wonderful review from one parent. After failing her mock exams last year, we enrolled the help of Sarah to improve Jessica’s predicted grades for her final school exams. After a few months of Sarah’s help, Jess passed with flying colours. We highly recommend Sarah. She is positive and patient and gave Jess a unique understanding of Macbeth. Mrs G. I offer a professional, friendly and reliable service. Contact me today for a free introductory session. See my advert alongside for contact information.

Love curls and waves?

W

e rarely have the hair we crave. Around 55% of the European population have wavy or curly hair. Throughout history, natural curls have been coiffed, relaxed or chemically treated to suit the fashion of the times.

The first permanent wave machine was invented in 1906; however the lotions similar to those we use today were not developed until the 40s. The precarious process of heating irons in a fire created curls and then in the 20s the Marcel waves were all the rage with the ‘Flappers’. These waves became popular again recently in bridal looks, thankfully using modern electric tools - no fire involved! In the 1950s heated rollers and roller sets helped create the glamorous looks of the Hollywood movie stars. ‘Big hair’ emulating styles as seen on the television shows like Dynasty and curly perms as worn by the footballer Kevin Kegan brought perms to the height of fashion in the 1980s though the poorly executed home perms resulting in frizz did not help the reputation of this great invention. Then in the 90s the straight, smooth Jennifer Aniston hair style was the desired look. However, fashion always goes in cycles and we are back in love with bouncy waves and curly hair. The perm still has its place to create body and waves. At Mimis Kru we use large rollers and good quality product to create natural bouncy curls which makes daily management of the hair so much easier. The techniques used to cut your hair can help increase or decrease the curls: texturizing can encourage curl, conversely blunt or club cutting will increase the weight of the hair discouraging some curl. Mimis Kru stylists will take time to consult with you and tailoring the cutting techniques to create the result you are looking for. There are so many tools designed to give you the curls and waves of your dreams, not to mention the online tutorials that make it all look so easy, though often after many burnt fingers or ears later, clients tell us they find wands and tongs difficult. At Mimis Kru we have a fantastic tool which really does make it easy to create curls or waves at home without burning fingers. For those with naturally curly hair you can create waves and bounce reducing the curl to change up your look for that day out. The Wonder Wave tool is cordless so you can use it anywhere, its charge lasts up to 40 mins, it doesn’t tangle and you cannot burn yourself as all the heating element is encased out of reach. For an ideal Christmas gift use promotion code “Curl2020” to get a fantastic deal on The Wonder Wave. In stock now at Mimis Kru. ● MimsKru, Local 12, Edificio Caribe, Av del Pla 129, Jávea. Golf: the safest sport during the Corona crisis!

D

uring the summer, the Coronavirus pandemic had an interesting and mostly positive outcome for the game of golf on the Costa Blanca: more people started to play golf. So why was that? Most importantly, golf is a game played in the open air and where social distancing is easy. Also, after months of lockdown, the chance to play on beautiful manicured courses in the sunshine was very appealing. But they were not the only reasons. Many ex-pat residents, especially Brits, who would normally have been travelling back to their home countries were unable to do so, and were therefore looking for alternative activities. As you might expect, there were also many more Spanish playing golf locally for similar reasons. However, it is not all good news for local golf clubs such as my own, Altea Club de Golf, as this autumn season is normally a very popular time for golf holidays. Unfortunately, however, they are not coming to Spain, either because of health concerns about travelling or because of quarantine on their return home. This, combined with the number of ex-pats who are also remaining in their home countries for the same reasons means a difficult few months ahead. This is good news for golfers as prices have currently never been cheaper. Why not dust off those golf clubs and give it a go! Steve Moores. Vice President, Altea Club de Golf.

ooler weather means we can finally up the ante a bit on the exercise front. What’s your level? Are you a novice trekker? So, you’ve never really hiked before but seeing friends posting beautifully scenic pictures on social media has piqued your interest! It’s never too late to start and you won’t regret it. But, don’t just hit the hills running. Break in gently. Here’s a little starter instruction manual to see you safely and sensibly kickstart your new hobby. Take small walks regularly to adjust. Beginners should never underestimate the importance of breaking in their bodies (and boots!) to a new exercise regime. “Start small; Dream big!” Know the trail section before you go. There are an abundance of resources online that describe and map routes. So, do your research before you set off. Print a map or directions. If you are tech savvy then you can use an app, such as google maps or wikilocs, to get you there and back without depending on the sun and stars! Make sure someone knows your itinerary. Inform a friend or relative of the route you intend to take and an estimated ETA. Don’t forget to keep in touch if you get distracted by beautiful scenery or decide to stop for lunch. We certainly don’t want your friend calling the emergency services for them to discover you sipping a cold beer whilst lapping up a stunning sunset. Bring fluids and snacks to keep you fuelled. Nuts, raisins, apples or maybe a protein bar are all powerful and this nutrition will give you an energy boost if you feel fatigued. Eat little and often to keep yourself going. Prepare your backpack with a few light essentials such as plasters, a pen knife, sun cream and a spare pair of socks. Nothing worse than soggy feet if you slip in a stream. Go at your own pace. It’s all about the journey; not the destination. If you go too fast you’ll miss the beauty that is all round you. And, rushing it, could lead to a nasty slip or fall. Remember: leave no trace! Kill nothing but time, take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footsteps. TOP 10 EASY LOCAL WALKS Pego Marshes Las Rotas Coast La Vía Verde Denia Villalonga Tunnels Lighthouse Albir Barranc de l’Encantada Cliffs of Benitatchell Font de la Coveta Serpis River Greenway Vall de Gallinera Now, let’s get cracking and start to enjoy one of the most therapeutic, accessible and affordable gym workouts you’ve ever undertaken. French on Saunders: It’s not a friendship you have to feed By Hannah Stephenson, PA

Page 20 Dawn French talks about her friendship with Jennifer Saunders, her first novel in five years and the trials of filming during a pandemic.

Despite lockdown, Dawn French, comedian, actress and novelist, has welcomed the chance to get together with her old mucker, Jennifer Saunders. They’ve been reunited for a podcast, are appearing in Kenneth Branagh’s movie remake of the Agatha Christie thriller Death On The Nile, due out in December, and have kept in touch during the pandemic, she reveals. “My first bit of ‘back to work’ was with Jennifer. As soon as we were allowed to meet up at a great distance from each other, with a wall of cake in-between, we met up and devised a series for Audible called French & Saunders: Titting About. “We see each other all the time anyway as friends. We’re not very good on Zoom. I’d rather be on the phone to her or we text each other a lot. “If we don’t get to see each other much, we just pick up where we left off. There’s never a guilty gap. It’s not a friendship that you have to feed on a regular basis to keep it topped up. It’s very secure.” During lockdown, French, 63, finished writing her first novel in five years, Because Of You, a story of love, identity and belonging, as two baby girls born on the millennium New Year’s Day change the paths of the women who give birth to them. One is stillborn and, in her desperate grief, the bereaved mother steals the other healthy baby from the hospital. Then unfolds the story of what happens to the two couples – and the child – as they face the consequences. French explains: “I wanted to find a story where it was a challenge to empathise with the main character. She is somebody who is honourable and upright and who we want to love, flaws and all, who does something huge and wrong. I wanted to write about someone you would still love when she makes a giant mistake. I wanted to morally wobble the centre line.” The novel explores the nature nurture debate and whether a child’s personality would naturally follow that of his or her birth parents or adoptive parents. It’s a subject she admits she’s thought about a lot – she has an adopted daughter Billie with ex-husband Sir Lenny Henry – but hasn’t come up with an answer. “It’s dollops of both and it depends on the people. The problem is that if you have somebody who is brought up by a different family than their blood relative, you could forever be saying, ‘Oh, clearly this person is the result of the nurturing in the new family’, or ‘This person is the result of the nature of the old family’. But how would you ever know?” French spent lockdown at home in Cornwall with her husband, Mark Bignell, who runs a drugs rehabilitation charity, her daughter Billie and her stepdaughter, Lily. She dedicates the book to Billie, Lils, as she calls her, and Olly, her stepson. “Lockdown was frightening. It’s frightening to have an invisible enemy out there but I’m quite resilient and resourceful and to hunker down with my family was a kind of a treat. “My two daughters came to live with me for three months and we cooked for each other and talked a lot and gave each other space and had robust debates about things.” Being a key worker, Bignell has worked throughout the period. “When we get the chance to look back, what we’ll notice is all the little acts of kindness and the moments when people pulled together and supported each other. He came back with so many stories of that nature, so although it was difficult, it was rewarding in many ways.” While 18 months of her work schedule went up in smoke and her tour was postponed, she’s missed other things too, she reflects.

Ian West/PA “I’ve missed cuddles with my mates and it proves to me how much that stuff matters. Now that restrictions are a bit more eased, I’ve got a special waxed hugging coat with plastic on the outside and a huge hood. I put gloves on and put it on back to front with the hood over my face and get my hugs that way.” She describes the government’s handling of the crisis as ‘shambolic’. “But then a pandemic throws you into a crisis,” she continues. “Nobody’s experienced at this. It’s no secret that I’m a ‘leftie’ and would have preferred Keir Starmer to be guiding us through this.” It may be no coincidence that her novel features a self-absorbed, pompous ass of an MP. “Well, we are surrounded by men like that at the moment,” she says wryly. “I didn’t base his character on a particular MP but on many people I see and listen to on TV and people I come across in my life. He’s a composite. I’m not naming names!” She recently went to London to join fellow actresses in campaigning to open theatres. “I just wanted to join forces with some remarkable women I know who are just making quiet protests about opening the theatres. I’m befuddled by it all because the discrepancies are hard to get your head around. I do not understand how you can get on a plane or go to a pub but you can’t sit in a theatre.” Despite the restrictions, French recently returned from Wales where she was filming the new Sky One Christmas family drama Roald & Beatrix, about the day when Roald Dahl, aged six, met Beatrix Potter, aged 60. French plays Potter and co-stars include Rob Brydon, Jessica Hynes, Bill Bailey and Alison Steadman. “There was a ‘gulp’ moment of, can we manage it? It was one of the first bits of filming that went back into production, you have a Covid person on your crew, you have medicals – I’ve had nine tests in four weeks. Everyone who’s not going to be wearing a mask has to be tested, everyone who is near you is tested. I’ve worked for five weeks with a crew I’ve only met from the eyes upwards. “I sanitised my hands 20 times a day, we sat in our caravans away from each other, we ate lunch on our own, our costumes were sanitised and quarantined. But every single person on that job was so grateful and happy to be back at work.” Meanwhile, the release of Kenneth Branagh’s remake of Death On The Nile, which features French and Saunders, has been put back to December. But they are not in a comedic role, she stresses. “Ken has been quite brave to cast us in this because if we’re in a big movie, normally we’re parodying it. But he knows that we can not do that. You wouldn’t tip up a giant budget film like that with two people arsing about.” Her tour may have been postponed but she’s clearly still busy. “My big work has fallen away and I’ve had to find it elsewhere and pray for things to come back. But I don’t feel any less creative. I will always write books because it’s where my heart is.” Will she work on TV with Saunders again? “If we can think of the right thing and if we want to, I would never say no to anything. It’s just finding the time and the right job and getting on with it.” Because Of You by Dawn French is published by Michael Joseph.

Shalgam Ki Sabzi – Turnip Curry

T

urnips make a delicious comforting winter warming curry, a million miles from the unpalatable boiled mush served at school dinners! This root vegetable is popular in north Indian cuisine either cooked into a curry, bhurji (mashed) or pickled. Shalgam curry is great served with hot buttered chapattis with a side of pickle and yogurt. If using baby turnips no need to peel the skin, however the larger ones need peeling. Ingredients 3 tablespoons oil 2-3 medium turnips diced 2 garlic cloves finely chopped 1 medium onion chopped 1 inch ginger chopped ½ canned chopped tomatoes

1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon turmeric 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon garam masala 2 chopped chillies (optional) Chopped fresh coriander to garnish

Time: 40 -50 minutes. Serves: 4 as a side Top tip: A Curry On Cooking spice kit can be used to replace the spices. Recipe In a large saucepan heat the oil to a medium heat; once hot, add the cumin seeds, cook until they start to crack and turn a golden colour. Add the onion and garlic cook for about five minutes or until golden brown. Add the fresh ginger, along with the tinned tomatoes. Mix and cook for a couple of minutes. Next stir in the spices, turmeric, salt, garam masala, black pepper and fresh chillies. Cook for 1 minute. Add the diced turnips and mix well. Stirring occasionally; cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until the turnips are tender. To stop

the turnips from catching on the bottom of the pan – add a couple of tablespoons of cold water. Once cooked check seasoning. Garnish with coriander and serve with naan or chapatti and plain yoghurt. Broaden Your Horizons by Maximising Your Rental Income Potential.

Female Focus Magazine November 2020

any people enjoy a really good income by renting their property to holiday makers during the summer. But are you aware there’s a growing demand for low season holiday rentals? If you’re only here on a part time basis, maybe dipping in and out of Spain with a ‘lock-up and leave’ property, then you may well be able to earn income through the winter and spring months. Property requirements are a little different, mainly around the need for indoor heating, and ideally pool heating also. If you do not already have pool heating, we can point you in the right direction of who to contact for a quote. With more of us looking for walking and cycling beaks during the low season months, or even just looking for some winter sun, the challenge we see at Horizon Holiday Villas is having enough properties to meet this growing demand. This is where you come in. If you have a property and are used to locking it up during the winter, contact us and we can advise you on its suitability for all year-round short-term rentals.

You’re probably thinking that your income maybe lower than in the height of summer, and you’d be right, but not so much lower, giving the opportunity for a decent residual income on an asset that would otherwise be costing you money. At Horizon Holiday Villas we have the experience, know-how, and well-established relationships with the town-hall to ensure your property is correctly licensed. We have the staff to manage your property. And we have the resources to provide a superior level of service for you, our client the property owner, and the guests staying in your property.

● Find out more by contacting Horizon Holiday Villas in Jávea for a chat (no obligation) on 691 312 522. If you want to whatsapp first, no problem. You can also email info@horizonholidayvillas.com. We look forward to hearing from you. See our advert in the Property Section on page 38.

The Real Cost and Value of a Garden

www.femalefocusonline.com

I

Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth f I told you that some work in your garden was going to cost ten thousand euros, you may think, wow that’s a lot. But if you were told the same thing about your house, you may be accepting of the price, even if the amount of work and materials required is far greater in the garden.

I understand that certain work within the garden versus the home may not have the same return value if you are selling a property, but it can still have a tipping point, for building work or garden work, in either direction. For example spending too much on a bathroom tile or fixtures can push budgets through the roof, so there are always sensible limits to set on what is, or isn’t required when creating a design and budget. Again this is a subject that is subjective depending on if you are renovating property to sell, or whether it is your home. A garden that looks neat to sell a house, versus a garden that is amazing for you and your family to live in are two totally different requirements. I have built gardens where I would be more than sure that the customer could not see the value of work we did in the garden back to them if they sold the property, but at the same time those gardens add a massive amount of value to the property that sometimes can't be calculated in money in the bank.

&

For example you have a big plot, a lovely house with views and then no garden, just weeds, or say you spend the minimum and have it gravelled and some trees, the vast majority of people coming to view the house would look at it and instantly say, the garden is horrible and it would cost too much to do something to it. Whereas I can guarantee with my customers, that the garden will add value to the property, even if it's not as much continued on next page

as they spent. I know if a property was up for sale with one of my gardens they would have more offers because the garden adds a value that can't truly be given a value. It guarantees them the sale and a quick one, unlike so many properties that sit on the shelf, just waiting, with no love or attention. We all know those properties that need a lot of TLC, and the simple fact is, if you were making an offer on a property without a nice garden you would be wanting to smash the vendors price down to compensate you. Unfortunately for me a lot of the time clients don’t understand or appreciate the amount of materials and work that has to go into building a garden. It's easy to think that a house has more value than the garden but in truth the garden is a massive part of the home, and that is the big word, HOME. Your garden is an absolutely intrinsic part of your home, the architecture of your home and the wider landscape that it all sits in. Don’t short change the garden thinking it won't matter, it will and in the end it may matter more than you could even imagine. Go out and enjoy your garden, you don’t need to be a garden person or pay a fortune in monthly maintenance costs if a garden is designed and made for you, Charlesworth Gardens specialise in creating gardens, through the design process and working with the customer to the end product. Gardens don’t just have to be big or elaborate to work and look amazing and that is what our design service creates for our customers, giving them gardens that stand the test of time and look great for years to come - making your house a home.

The Original Charity TM LIONS Shop and Library JOIN THE RACES need your help this Teulada Moraira Lions Christmas were delighted to receive

For the last 30 years we have assisted Santa to supply individual gifts which have been on the wish lists of the children at Raquel Paya special school in Denia. We also provide for the schools wish list too, wherever possible. To raise the funds to do this, we hold our huge and very popular Christmas Raffle. Thanks to the generous gifts and donations supplied by local businesses, hairdressers, restaurants, shops etc., we have been able to do this extremely well throughout this period of time. Now we have COVID 19. Unfortunately, Santa will not be able to visit in his usual manner and we are not asking our generous business donors for help as in the past, as we know that they, like us, have been struggling financially throughout 2020 too. However, we have a plan, and this is where you come in. We are asking everyone to pop in the 3€ that they would have spent on 5 raffle tickets, into a collection pot instead. This will go a long way to purchasing individual gift vouchers from Carrefour (opposite the school) for every child, to be exchanged for toys, clothing, food or whatever is necessary for them to have a merry Christmas. No better Prize than that, I hope you agree. Obviously, if you wish to pop in more than 3€, we will be delighted! Many thanks in anticipation. Georgie Harvey - President The Original Charity Shop and Library, Carrer Nancy 1, Platja de l’Arenal, Jávea.

a donation of 250€ from the recent Ladies St Leger Race Day Event held at Maxim’s. The organiser Coral Guise-Smith offered the Lions 50% of their profits which she stipulated was to go to support the local foodbanks. TM Lions regularly donate funds to the Food Banks, particularly when their usual funding routes are interrupted for some reason. The Race Day was a great illustration that you can raise money and have fun in the process! – even in these trying times. TM Lions are extremely grateful to Coral and Libby for their generosity and can assure them that the funds will be directed as requested and will be very welcome. Indications are that poverty is going to be a key problem in our local community this winter following the impacts the pandemic has had on businesses, and so TM Lions are keen to look at all options to boost our funds. To help us in this endeavour, please pop into the Lion's Den charity shop which can be found a couple of doors away from Letters R Us beneath the Pepe La Sal supermarket on the Centro Comercial, Moraira, just past the fountain roundabout on Ctra MorairaTeulada. We also have a GoFundMe page if you would like to support us but do not yet feel comfortable to go into the shop. Find this at https://www.gofundme.com/f/teulada-moraira-lions. Female Focus Magazine November 2020 Page 31 “At the time, I didn’t know it was going to be a book, but I just believed that the opportunity would present itself. Then a year or two later I went into Love Island to a wild reception, which to this day I don’t think I’ll ever understand. Since then, I’ve been thinking, ‘Ok, how can I give something of substance back to people?’

Ovie Soko: ‘Your perspective can

make you limitless – it can make you indestructable’ By Liz Connor, PA

After famously becoming the ultimate agony aunt in the Love Island villa, Ovie Soko speaks to Liz Connor about his plans to launch a self-help book. Ovie Soko became an instant hit with Love Island viewers – as the smooth-talking basketball player who was always on hand to dispense sage advice to his fellow lovelorn contestants. A year on from that show, the 29-year-old has since notched up a cool 2 million Instagram followers, an appearance on Celebrity Bake Off and has become a regular pundit on Sky Sports. As he prepares to release an inspirational book, You Are Dope (£12.99, Quadrille Publishing), in which he explains how you can harness the power of his trademark positive thinking, we asked the social media star to explain how he always manages to practise self-love and self-respect.

“I didn’t want to create a book that was all about me, but I thought it would be nice to open up, let people in and share some of the lessons that I’ve learned in my life along the way. “That’s a key reason why I made sure the book was interactive with plenty of space for the reader to jot things down, make notes and apply some of the mini lessons along the way. I want [people] to be able to pick out scenarios in their lives which they can relate to what I’m talking about, and hopefully grow from it.” You’re known for your positive vibes on Instagram. How do you always manage to stay so happy and upbeat?

Why did you decide to write a book on positive thinking?

“I think your mindset is something you always have control of. Your perspective can make you limitless – it can make you indestructible.

“I’ve always wanted to give something back. I have a little journal that I keep and, way before I went on Love Island, I wrote down that I wanted to create a product that helps people to feel better about themselves.

“If you choose to see the silver lining in every situation, it means you will take something of benefit from it – regardless of how hard that might be. Training your perspective can really take you far in life.” Do you have any tools that get you through tough times? “I think you should always make sure that you’re taking time out for yourself – preferably in the morning. That way you can set the tone for the day. “Another great tool is gratitude. When we forget to show gratitude for everything we have in life, we can easily forget how privileged we really are.” The book talks a lot about overcoming worry and self-sabotage. Have you struggled with mental health issues in the past? “I’ve definitely struggled with confidence and I’ve had my own little struggles with mental health – I think this is something that is increasingly becoming an issue and has been magnified by social media. “[Social media] is really hard on your mind – it will almost force you into a room with millions of pictures of people’s perfect lives. It can make you feel like you’re not good enough, because you’re measuring yourself up to the perfect side of people’s lives that they want to show. You’re not being fair on yourself.” Tell us, what does being ‘dope’ mean to you? “I think being ‘dope’ is the ability for one to harness and realise the power and strength that they have in being exactly who they are. Realising that true fulfilment in this life means walking your own path. “The journey will be different for everyone because we’re all supposed to walk our own unique journey. We’re not supposed to think about things the way that everyone else does. There’s power in that though, because you bring something that no one else has to the table.” Photo credits: above - PA Photo/Quadrille, Left - Lia Toby/PA Photos.

Please call for opening info. Sat 17th Oct was 'World Singing Day' the chosen song 'What a Wonderful World'. What a fabulous reason for Denia Rock Choir to get together for the first time since lockdown in March! We sang in Basetes Park in Denia utilising the steps for social distancing which worked perfectly. We sang three songs including 'What a Wonderful World' at 10:00 under the direction of musical director Claire Lowe, it was amazing to think all around the world people were singing the same song at the same time! What joy it brought to members of DRC to get together and sing together. We are hoping it can become a regular thing rules and weather permitting. (We also had an unsuspecting audience of a fitness class very hard at work who took time out to applaud us!) A lovely end to a lovely 30 minutes.
