ll the world is experiencing a very frightening time, due to this dreadful virus that is circulating everywhere. Until a good vaccine has been developed, we are going to have to live with it and I understand that there are a number of people who are very fearful and not leaving their homes to go anywhere.

To do this for such a long time could create problems with their health. All I can advise is doing what many other people are, going out locally and being extremely careful where they go and carrying out all the rules that the government is asking us to do. In the end, however, it is everybody’s responsibility to protect themselves and others. Obviously there is a lot of sadness, despair, and fear surrounding this virus, but we are having to learn to live with it. The need to feel secure in your own home is vital and again I can only suggest that washing hands and using gel, is the only thing you can do to protect yourself. Of course, as an insurance lady, I have to suggest that one way you can ensure your overall security is by having the correct insurances in place. Please try not to be blackmailed by the banks, as you will discover later when trying to claim, you will have no help and your insurance cover is very limited. There are many Spanish companies which are excellent, but they do not offer the special Expat policies that my company does. If you go to see or telephone one of my staff, everything will be properly explained to you in detail, with all your questions answered. Many of the Spanish companies just use the one word… That “everything” is covered. This is impossible and what does it mean? Because the verbal word alone means nothing. Then of course, if your policy is written in Spanish and you do not understand it, then how do you know what is actually covered? Can you afford to take this risk?

With all the negativity, opinions and fake news going around at the moment it has been so heartwarming to hear from our clients, many of whom have been with us over 20 years (a few more than that), just how happy they have been with our support of them and their businesses throughout this trying time. Now, more than ever we all need to help each other by pulling together.

Over the last couple of years our American Staffy went from a bouncy beauty to a cantankerous bitch with the aches and pains that come with old age. We had tried her on various tablets but they gave her bad stomach problems. With a fair bit of skepticism we started her on the Pure Organic CBD oil for pets, with the blessing of the vet. Well, she now handles the stairs much better and can even jump on and off the top step of the pool, which she had stopped doing even though it was her favourite place to cool down. It is great to see her not suffering like she was. Congratulations to Shirley Young from Moraira who won the competition last month, by spotting the logo on page 25. This month if you find the Curry on Cooking logo (not on this page, front page or the recipe page) you are in with a chance of winning a selection of curry kits which will be posted out to your house. Simply email editor@femalefocusonline.com with your name, address, phone number and the page you found the logo on. See inside Lesley for full competition details. Good luck. Jermaine Jenas on life after pro football, the joy of fatherhood and tackling racism

By Gabrielle Fagan, PA Retiring from sport was a tough transition, but as Jermaine Jenas tells Gabrielle Fagan, his life, health and confidence have bloomed. Jermaine Jenas seems effortlessly self-assured during his regular TV appearances as a football commentator and pundit.

But, he reveals, that inner confidence has been hard won, and during his days playing for England he struggled with low selfesteem – despite apparently having the sporting world at his feet. It might seem unexpected from somebody so clearly talented, handsome and outwardly “living my dream”, but Jenas admits there were times he secretly battled with ‘imposter syndrome’ – which he believes affects many top players. The former midfielder, who retired after struggling to recover from a knee injury in 2014, was playing alongside a “golden generation” – Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes. But he describes the set-up under thenmanager Sven-Göran Eriksson as an exclusive “boy’s club”, which he felt had a detrimental effect on peripheral members of the squad, like himself. “I was playing for England, and it was nothing to do with my ability or my deserving of the position I was in, but I just didn’t feel part of that environment,” says Jenas, who opened up about his experience in new British Army podcast, The Locker (episode two). It was quite a clique – it was a bit like an England Boys’ Club – and there were times when I felt on the fringes. It wouldn’t seem to matter how well I was playing or training because we had some of the best players in the world, and whether they were playing well or not, they were always picked. There were moments when I battled imposter syndrome. I felt there’s nothing I can do to break through into this team. It eventually grinds you down and confidence can be fragile, no matter how much you’ve achieved. The manager seemed set in his ways with: ‘They’re world-class players, they start and that’s it’.” Jenas, who has three daughters (two with wife Ellie and one from a previous relationship), says “the mental health” side of football wasn’t spoken of as it is today, which he hails as a “game-changer” in all sports. “While my time playing and being in the England team were some of the best days of my life, I wish there had been more focus on talking about problems,” says the Nottingham-born 37-year-old, who now lives in Hertfordshire. “Instead, anything mental was regarded as a weakness, like a physical injury, which would mean you might not be picked. Instead, the best way to deal with something like imposter syndrome or anything else is to admit you have an issue. Communication is everything and that’s so improved in sport nowadays.”

Here, Jenas opens up about coping with leaving the sport, family life, and dealing with racism… How did you cope with retiring from the game? “I regard making that transition from playing into the life I’m in now as my biggest achievement. It was very hard initially, particularly because my career was cut short by injury when I was 31. I get lots of top footballers calling me to ask for advice on coping with retirement. One minute you’re in this life where, when you’re playing well, there’s euphoria and living like a rock star, people chasing you for autographs and instantly giving you a table in top restaurants as soon as you say your name – and then it’s like you fall off the edge of a cliff. Your identity and those privileges just vanish.” How do you enjoy your TV career? “TV was my saviour after retirement. It’s allowed me to stay connected to the sport I love but channel my aspirations, ambition, drive and passion into a new career, and the best thing is I’m learning all the time. I’ve got to admit, though, to shaking like mad with nerves on my first appearance on Match Of The Day. I was sweating and fidgeting and my heart was going crazy. It was a big moment and I felt I was a mess, but I got through it.” What does Ellie mean to you? “Meeting her massively changed my life. Often you hear that when footballers’ careers finish and the money dries up, their marriages can fail as well, but Ellie’s been incredible. I was playing for England but having loads of injuries when I met her, and her support has been above and beyond what most people would give. She’s the main reason I am what I am now.” What does fatherhood mean to you? “It was literally a game-changer for me. You can live in a bubble as a professional footballer, where your whole life, outlook and mood – on and off the pitch – seem to depend on how you play, but as soon as I had my first daughter, something really relaxed in me. When a little child runs to you for a hug when you get home, doesn’t care how you played, they just want you, you realise that as much as you still give your sport 100%, maybe don’t put it as high as life and death. When I retired, my wife and three amazing daughters [Sancha, 12, Geneva, 7, and Olivia, 4] were a huge part of getting me out of the dark and into a place where I am now feeling content and fulfilled.” Do you support the Black Lives Matter campaign? “My mum’s white and my dad’s black. I

British Army/PA.

Female Focus Magazine September 2020

appreciate both sides of my heritage and I understand the suppression black people have been under for years, so I support it 100%. I remember seeing my dad, a semiprofessional player in the mid-Eighties, experience racial abuse from the crowd, but then the crowds weren’t so big at that level and you could at least see where it was coming from. I think we live in a world now which is almost more dangerous, because you’ve got people that are doing it in the dark to an extent, people living in the shadows on social media, creating fake accounts and just saying whatever they want to say to people. It’s great that people are finally actually recognising it and talking about it.” Did you experience racism in your playing career? “Every now and then, particularly when I played in Eastern Europe, there was a level of racism. If I was playing on a team say with four black players and they got the ball, they got a ‘monkey’ chant, while as a mixed-race man, if I got the ball [the chanting] wouldn’t be as intense, but I still would get it and that didn’t mean it didn’t hurt. “The lack of black managers, the lack of black coaches, the lack of black representation when you’ve got so many black players in the League is odd. Racism has always been there. My fear is people just adapt and find a way around it, like they always have done. It’s important we keep pushing the conversation, challenging people and forcing the change, rather than sitting and waiting and posting the odd thing on Instagram and just thinking, ‘OK, I’ve done my bit’.” How do you look after your health and wellbeing? “Daily training when you’re a professional player is intense and I’ve gone from having to hobble to the bathroom, wincing with the pain until my muscles woke up every morning, to now feeling really fit and totally without pain, which is great. The weird thing is though, when I stopped playing, I missed feeling that physical exhaustion and putting my body through its paces, so I’ve replaced that by gym training, golf and boxing. Keeping busy and focused is vital for me and that physical routine, along with my career in television and my family life, is a brilliant blend for me.” The British Army’s new podcast The Locker can be found on all major podcast directories, including Spotify, iTunes and Google Podcasts, with new episodes every fortnight. TM LIONS STEAM AHEAD!

D

espite the challenges throughout lockdown, the Teulada Moraira Lions Club have been helping where they can. They have worked previously with Raquel Paya school in Denia who care for disabled children and young people. The school has been working throughout the summer to prepare for pupils returning in September. One of their new activities will be laundry. In order to comply with Covid secure regulations, the staff will be changing into uniforms when they arrive at the school and wanted to be able to change into clean uniforms for the afternoon session and, to do this, the school are setting up a laundry area where some of the older students will work to develop life skills. The TM Lions charity shop in Moraira were donated a top class steam iron and with the owners consent, we have passed this on to the Raquel Paya school. Miguel Ivars, the school Principal, accepted the donation of the iron on behalf of the school and thanked the Lions for their continued generosity. The Lion's Den charity shop is now open again and able to accept donations. The Den can be found a couple of doors away from Letters R Us beneath the Pepe La Sal supermarket on the Centro Comercial, Moraira, just past the fountain roundabout on Ctra Moraira-Teulada. We also have a GoFundMe page if you would like to support us but do not yet feel comfortable to go into the shop. You will find this at https://www.gofundme. com/f/teulada-morairalions. This can also be accessed via our website or FB page. Please help us to help those in need in our area. Spanish Compliant Investment Bond

C

hoosing where to invest your money once you become a Spanish tax resident can seem very complicated, especially if you are not from a financial background. With a wide array of investment products now available in the market, knowing which product to select can feel very daunting. To this extent, it is not uncommon to see individuals leaving investments how they were prior to moving to Spain – but this can sometimes leave them disadvantaged. A Spanish Compliant Bond is often a good investment for expatriates living abroad. This tax-efficient investment offers similar benefits to those associated with ISA’s (Individual savings accounts) in the UK. Income and growth can roll up tax-free within the investment and tax is only payable when a withdrawal is taken. In contrast, any growth on a non-Spanish compliant investment would have to be declared on an annual basis, regardless of if a withdrawal had taken place. Tax would be payable on any growth. When a withdrawal is taken from a Spanish compliant investment, part of the withdrawal is deemed as “return of capital” and the other part is deemed as “growth”. Tax is only payable on the growth element which is what makes this type of investment tax-efficient. You can see from the example below how this would work in practice;

A Spanish compliant product can also help to reduce any liability to Spanish succession tax (IHT), especially if the underlying beneficiaries are not located in Spain. This is especially relevant for those with larger estates or those who hold large amounts in bank deposits. Banks are seen as one of the safest places to hold money but they are still subject to default risk. Default risk is where banks loan our deposits to third parties who could then potentially default on repayment (we saw this in the financial crisis of 2008). Under current legislation, investors are only covered up to £85,000 in UK banks, and 100,000€ in Europe. For more information on this type of investment, or for a review on your current investments, why not get in touch with us? · Logic Financial Consultants are fully regulated & licensed financial advisers, covering the Costa Blanca, Murcia and Canary Islands. The Wolves of the Radfan by David Brown. Review by Fiona Hulme

This is a gripping and hair-raising account of British Army active service in the Aden Conflict in the 60s, seen through the eyes of Bomber Brown. The book starts immediately with enemy engagement, and the feelings of terror and fear felt by rookie soldiers on their first sortie are portrayed with ruthless detail. We learn more about Bomber, his determination to protect himself and his comrades, and his ability to engage at all levels. Three Section were Northern Irish lads, tough, unruly and dismissive of anyone not up to the job. Several Corporals had not lasted more than a few weeks trying to gain their respect, and this Section became known as The Damned. Bomber became their Acting Corporal, and quickly earned their grudging regard as he threw himself into his first leadership role. We discover more about tactics, weaponry, and the sheer gruesomeness of combat as many skirmishes are described almost minute by minute. Suspense and anticipation build as we discover if ambush plans will succeed or if, inevitably, quick thinking and adaptation must take over. Bomber's youthful experiences in this Conflict will shape his adult life. ISBN 978-1-5289284-5-8, available through Amazon.co.uk and on Kindle. David Brown served almost 40 years in the British Army. He is now retired and living on the Costa Blanca , and is working on his second book set in Northern Ireland, titled Hard Rain. He was evacuated to Harrogate in 1939 and subsequently volunteered for aircrew training in June 1940. He was just 19. Then followed a varied career in the RAF during which John flew many operational sorties throughout the war including two sorties in support of the famous Dieppe Raid on the 19th August 1942 and one of the last, key operational sorties, to drop equipment and supplies to the resistance just to the North West of Cannes in France. Walk Your Way Well

by Niamh O'Sheehan

’m writing this whilst still peeling my eyes open at 5:00am in a creaky bottom bunk of a big old room in a big old church. I scribble to the accompaniment of the intermittent snores of six fellow pilgrims squeezing in the last of their Z’s before everything will stir at around 6ish.

Let me tell you a story: On Oct 10th 2017, from a strange place in my life, I set off on an 800km pilgrimage. The Camino Santiago was a thing that had sneakily crept up my bucket list since I heard tell of it in my teens. This challenge gained an urgent “Top Priority” status as things weren’t adding up on my happiness barometer anymore. I needed to refocus and reestablish the connection to all the joy I had right at my fingertips every day. It dawned on me that I was so incredibly fortunate, if a little fat and plenty unfit, to have the physical capacity to even contemplate something so out of my comfort zone. While considering people who are physically disabled I gained a new appreciation for my flabby fully functioning body. So, as quick as the decision to undertake the expedition was made, a further hair brained idea quickly followed suit: To try to use my challenge to raise funds for someone who isn’t as blessed as myself. With the support of HELP DAMA we found a lovely local man Juan Carlos who had suffered a life changing incident leaving him paralysed. Juan, and his gorgeous family, would surely benefit from an electric wheelchair. All systems were go! Operation “Niamh on the Camino” kicked off. So, let’s cut to the aftermath of all this. I did the walk (barely). The community supported the fundraiser (amazingly) and I returned home renewed and empowered and I continue to reap the physical, emotional and spiritual profits from my experience to this day. The Camino Santiago was a game changer for me. Most importantly, Juan Carlos, gained a new set of wheels that offered new found independence. Result! Where am I going with all this? I’m trying to lead us to the point where I find myself doing it all over again. This time, as the privileged escort to my 11 year old boy Oscar. On my return home, I was charmed to hear my wee Oscar profess that he wanted to do the Camino Santiago with me one day. I agreed and immediately forgot all about it. We tend to do that right!? Until, he mentioned it again. Until it snowballed into nagging. Long story short, In October 2018, we were on “The Way”. Oscar is a decent fellow and wanted to have his shot at a fundraiser too. He smashed it! An electric hoist for La Pedrera Rehab and shoes for all the lads at the Gandia Franciscan men’s shelter. We also squeezed in a couple of hundred kilometres along the Meseta from Burgos to Leon in October 2019. Fast forward to today! 2020 is somehow the weirdest yet the most wonderfully appropriate moment to undertake something slightly outrageous in this “new normal”. And in a time as peculiar and painful as this it’s the ideal opportunity to focus on something positive and beautiful. Another walk. Another fundraiser. Oscar’s 300km August walk is in aid of the installation of a Sensory Garden in the La Xara Day Care Centre. This is a vital community facility that cares for young adults with special needs. When this goes to print, Oscar will have hopefully come to the safe and successful end to his 800km pilgrimage at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. We thank the magazine Female Focus, and you guys, its readers, from the bottom of our hearts for positively joining Oscar and this old side-kick on his incredible adventure. Your support has been our fuel. Buen Camino amigos. Let’s all follow Oscar to “Walk Our Way Well”. Note from the editor: You can still help Oscar by donating to his amazing cause by visiting www.helpofdenia.com and using their donate button, making a transfer to Bank account ES11 2100 9015 2102 0016 2933 - remember to mention OSCAR or call 676 507 791 for drop off points.

Why autumn and winter are the best seasons for cosmetic surgery

www.femalefocusonline.com

One dilemma that many people face when considering plastic surgery is choosing the best time of the year to have their procedure. Thinking about it logically, the summer time is when most people are going to want to flaunt their best assets. So, with that in mind, doesn’t that make the autumn and winter months the best time to have cosmetic surgery? Ultimately, cosmetic surgery should be all about restoring your confidence and enhancing the unique natural beauty that you already possess, and for that, any time of the year is perfect! But, let’s look at why so many people choose to book cosmetic surgery during the autumn and winter months:

Recovery can be an easier experience People research procedures like breast implants or a mini tummy tuck and discover the period of recovery that is involved. Unfortunately, there is no way around this as there will always be a period of recovery to endure, unless you’re opting for a nonsurgical cosmetic procedure like botox or dermal filler injections. However, if you’re going to have a procedure that requires you take it easy for a while and remain more indoors, then the cooler winter months may be best suited. Once you are ready to go outside more regularly, you can always wear your clothing in layers or use an accessory like a scarf to disguise any post-surgery dressing or scars. It’s a great excuse for a quieter period If you lead a fast and stressful life, then you can use the recovery time to relax in the comfort of your own home. During the cooler months, it’s typically easier for people to reduce their schedule and stay indoors, allowing for adequate rest and recovery. If you have children, them being back in school during your recovery will reduce the temptation to be more active than you should be until you are completely recovered. Easier to avoid the sun The sun can be very damaging to the skin, especially when your surgical procedure is healing. Too much sun exposure can increase the recovery time as the wound may take longer to heal, which can lead to infections or in some cases scarring. During the winter months, the daylight hours are of course lessened, and the sun is not as intense as it is in the summer months. If there is anything about your appearance that bothers you, then plastic surgery may be the answer. But before rushing into things contact Dr Ignacio Poole so that he can discuss the options available to you. Whether you’re looking for the perfect facelift or necklift, or considering liposuction, eyelid surgery, ear pinning or whatever, Dr Poole has the knowledge and expertise to have you looking and feeling fabulous with a wide range of plastic surgery procedures available. Helicobacter Pylori and its effects Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection occurs when the H. pylori bacteria infects the stomach mucus, usually during childhood and is present in over 50% of people worldwide. It is a common cause of peptic ulcers and can lead to stomach cancer. The way that H. pylori infects a person is still a mystery but is passed on through ingesting contaminated food or water, or by person to person through direct contact with, faeces stool, vomit, or saliva. Most people with this infection have no symptoms, but if they do occur it may be in the form of a severe burning pain in the abdomen, bloating, weight loss, nausea, diarrhoea or dark tar like stools and lack of appetite. Complications An open sore called an Ulcer can form due to the build-up of stomach acid; this affects around 10% of people who are suffering with the infection. Inflammation and irritation of the stomach lining causing Gastritis. Stomach cancer is a strong risk factor if the infection if left undetected for a long period of time, so it is important to seek medical advice if you are suffering with any symptoms. A breath or stool test can identify the infection which can be treated with medication and a simple ultrasound scan with our Specialist can show if there are any further complications. But as the ageing process takes place, we lose definition, the contour of the jawline decreases, our cheeks flatten, and our skin begins to sag and cause a jowling effect. We at Clinica Britannia can help eliminate this problem by with the use of Restylane fillers, Botox, and facial peelings. Some of the treatments offered at our clinic are: Restylane lyft is used for cheek lifting and to enhance the jawline creating a lifting effect to your facial features giving you a more natural and youthful look to your skin. Restylane Refyne is a softer and more flexible dermal filler that can be used for the treatment of more dynamic areas of your face, such as around the lips, the nasolabial folds, and the marionette lines. Restylane Kysse enhances the shape and adds volume to your lips for a perfect pout. Botox treatment involves a very small amount of a specific purified protein that when injected with a very fine needle into the small muscles of the face helps to eliminate facial wrinkles, particularly those on the forehead, between the brows, and beside the eyes. New to Clinica Britannia is the PRX-T33 peel which rejuvenates, illuminates, and cleanses the skin and is the only peel that is safe to use in the summer months. The peel also aids with the removal of blemishes, wrinkles, scarring from chicken pox, acne, melasma or stretch marks and can be used as a revitalising treatment to the hands, neck, and décolleté area. Come and visit our Anti-aging specialist Dr Irina Artemenko for her professional advice on what would be best for you and how she can give you back that youthful look.

Are mosquito coils good or bad for our health?

W

orldwide there’s growing concern about the adverse health impacts associated with the burning of mosquito coils and sticks indoors. The insecticide products used are generally considered safe, but it’s the particulate matter produced from a smouldering mosquito coil that poses the greatest risk.

Some experts have gone as far as to claim that “burning one mosquito coil in a closed room amounts to smoking roughly 100 cigarettes”. The link between smoking cigarettes and poor health is clear. But could this also be true about mosquito coil smoke, especially if there’s prolonged exposure? The sight and smell of the distinctively shaped coils is now a mainstay of summer, but is all that smoke really keeping away the swarms of mosquitoes, or could breathing in the smoke be worse than mosquito bites for our overall health? Back in the early 1900s Japanese entrepreneurs Eiichiro & Yuki Ueyama invented their katori senk (mosquito-killing incense). Traditional smoke coils and sticks were made from a natural pyrethrum paste, and modern mosquito coils still mostly contain either pyrethroid insecticides or plant-derived substances such as citronella. They’re cheap, portable and generally effective at reducing mosquito bites. But mosquito coils also contain a mix of other products that hold the coil together, and enable it to smoulder slowly. It is these chemical constituents that are causing concern. In Australia one study estimated the particulate matter produced from burning one mosquito coil was equivalent to burning between 75-137 cigarettes. This amount of exposure surely poses a health risk, although so far there is no proven evidence that the long-term exposure to mosquito coil smoke increases the risk of more serious health impacts such as lung cancer. In Spain most manufacturers now ensure that their packaging contains clear instructions to use the spirals only outside, and away from any surfaces where food is being prepared, or where food utensils are stored. And that they should never be mixed with any other chemical products. Overall, the key message is to avoid prolonged exposure to the smoke, and certainly not to use them in enclosed spaces. And of course there is a whole variety of modern “smokeless”, plug-in devices designed and available for indoor use. ● This article provided by Asociacion Amigos Europeos de Javea. Indian Granola

his granola is strangely addictive – there’s something deeply satisfying to starting the day with a bowl of crunchy homemade granola, it’s also great to munch on for a tasty snack. We’ve given this granola recipe a Spice Sister makeover with an Indian twist by adding turmeric, cinnamon and ginger. Add the fruit after baking, at the end as it is likely to burn. For really crunchy granola make sure the oats are completely coated before baking. Ingredients 2 tbsp vegetable oil 125ml maple syrup 1tsp vanilla extract 1tsp ground turmeric 1tsp ground cinnamon ½ tsp ground ginger 300g jumbo rolled oats 50g sunflower seeds 35g sesame seeds 50g pumpkin seeds 100g flaked chopped almonds 100g mixed dried fruit/ berries Method Heat the oven to 150ºC/fan 130ºC/gas 2. Line a large baking tray.

In a large bowl mix the oil, maple syrup and vanilla, add the turmeric, cinnamon and ginger, whisk with a fork until blended. Add the oats, sunflower, pumpkin, sesame seeds and almonds and mix well until all the oats are coated. Tip the mixture onto the baking tray, spreading evenly. Bake for 10 minutes, take out of the oven and stir thoroughly; cook for another 10-15 minutes or until golden and crisp. Mix in the dried fruit, leave to cool at room temperature. The granola can be stored in an airtight container for up to a month.

Why taking a ‘power shower’ can help you to think more creatively

By Liz Connor, PA

The shower isn’t just a place for bad singing. Liz Connor hears why taking a moment under the water can help you problem-solve and dream up new ideas.

iStock/PA.

When it comes to taking daily showers, there are generally two types of people – those who see jumping under the jets as a functional job to tick off in the morning, and those who savour being in the warm water and extend it for an extra five minutes or so. Whichever camp you fall into, the benefits of taking a shower might be more than skin deep – and there’s a reason why many people get their best ideas when they’re daydreaming under the water. A study by cognitive psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman found that 72% of people generate new ideas while they’re in the shower – giving themselves permission to daydream, which can be an important element to incubating creative thoughts. The survey, which looked at 4,000 people aged 18 to 64 across eight different countries and was commissioned in 2014, revealed that 14% of people take showers for the specific purpose of dreaming up a new idea, for fresh thinking or for problem-solving. Speaking at an Ignite80 (ignite80.com) panel, Kauffman said the “relaxing, solitary, and non-judgmental shower environment” may help people to think more creatively, as it allows “the mind to wander freely, causing people to be more open to their inner stream of consciousness and daydreams”. Nikki Taylor is a busy entrepreneur who has tapped into the benefits of so-called ‘power showering’, using Kauffman’s idea of creative brainstorming to help generate new ideas. “Before I became a mum, I used to love journaling,” says Taylor, who runs a property consulting business (italy-propertyconsulting.com). “The only time I really have to myself is when I’m in the shower, so I utilise that five to ten minutes to think about what I’m grateful for and to visualise what I want from my business in the future.” Taylor says that when we journal, we tend to just head into autopilot and write down the same thoughts and feelings. By contrast: “When you’re thinking of ideas in the moment, especially in the shower, it’s a great way to daydream and manifest some biggerpicture ideas that you might not normally have time to think about.” So how do you get in on the entrepreneurial power shower game? “Some people might want to record their ideas and thinking processes using their smartphone while they’re in the shower, so you can listen back to it later,” she suggests. Taylor says she prefers to start with affirmations – positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome selfsabotaging and negative thoughts. “I say them out loud to myself in the shower, and then I’ll think about any problems I’m encountering in my business. Being in the shower forces you to be away from your phone and your laptop, and I can’t think of any other time where you can creatively think without any interruptions. I think it’s a really handy tip for anyone who’s time-poor like me,” she says, adding: “We get so caught up in life that journaling can become a bit of a chore. You always have that time in the shower that’s yours – away from emails, social media and PA Photo/Nikki Taylor other distractions.”

You just need to start. Have you ever been to one of those spectacular botanical gardens, or even just around to a friends and suffered a bit Article supplied by Lee Charlesworth with garden envy as you amaze at what has been done, the grandeur of it, the detail? Most people would instantly assume that they couldn’t do it, that they don’t have the budget, that the maintenance must be ridiculous and ultimately that they don’t have green fingers. The simple fact is that you don’t need any of the above, all you need to do is to start. I would always suggest it is wise to have a garden designer create a plan, something that gives you a direction, some positive goals to achieve along the way, but it’s not entirely essential if you have a vision. Some of the most impressive gardens I have ever seen have been created in a much more organic and less predetermined sense. The biggest difference about whether you choose to use a garden designer or not is the that a garden designer can give you a much better idea of a finished garden, allow for the growth of the plants to be planted, so you’re not having to cut or remove things in the future and having a garden design may push you that little bit more to actually starting. As much as when I create a design and build a garden for a customer, it looks like a finished product - especially a few years down the line, gardens always require some tinkering, some changes, some new plants as everything starts to develop and become something that you could have only dreamed of.

&

Those gardens that you may have marvelled at all started as small trees, small shrubs, that sneaky pathway may have been an addition at a later stage, but the simple fact remains that if the garden was never continued on next page started, then it would never be.

&

Development and growth of a garden is the thing that takes it from nice, to wow, to breath taking. For me using a garden designer to give you that push, to lead you in a direction, to give you the insight and ideas you wouldn’t necessarily have had, is incredibly important. It ultimately saves you some mistakes and some cost, but as with everything in life, learning, developing and growing is something that is part of the fabric of humans and nature, and the only way to get somewhere is to start on the journey. continued from previous page

Who needs a Companion?

We all do. Humans are social animals. We subconsciously crave companionship. What we can't get from our fellow humans, we garner from our "pets". But, in reality, our "pets" are defined in terms of cats and dogs. It's hard to cuddle up to an iguana, a spider, or a snake. To create a successful partnership, obtain a pet as a successful companion, there are some inflexible rules that most of us are oblivious of. To successfully obtain a companion, in most cases, we do it all wrong. We go into a pet store and we pick what we thinks is the cutest, or cuddliest, or friskiest, or some other criterion that we think will make the animal a suitable companion. I will give you an uncomfortable rule: Don't select the animal. Let the animal select you! A number of years ago, I was talking to a good friend of ours that had just returned from an animal rescue shelter with her newly acquired dog. It was a "reclaimed" greyhound. Sad to say, it looked pretty ratty. Its mottled coat of many colours and shades, its loping gait, its fear of stairs, all made it seem to be an unlikely companion candidate. Boy, I'd never chosen THAT dog! But my friend explained. When she went to the animal rescue centre, she was advised to "just walk through the facility and look at all the dogs. The ones that would be successful companions will select you!" And so it was. As she walked amongst the dogs, most of them either ignored her, or politely stepped aside without looking at her. Only this one dog began to follow her around. It became obvious after a while that this dog "fancied" her and wanted to join with her as her companion. So, she took the shelter's advice and the two immediately bonded. As she said, it didn't matter how the dog looked, or what quirks the dog had. It was obvious from the start that the dog wanted to be her companion and wanted her to be his. We ran into each other a few years later. My friend admitted that this "rescue" dog was the best companion that she ever had. It was obedient, and went out of its way to please her. She was very pleased with "her" choice. I've found that the same technique works for mature cats (I'm partial to cats - they are more independent than dogs, and are easier for me to take care of). After our cat of twenty-two years finally succumbed, we went to a well-renowned cattery, and I merely walked through the facility. Most of cats ignored me. Some politely deferred to me, but weren't really interested. One, however, began following me around. When I sat down, the cat jumped up on the seat beside me. I tentatively reached out my hand to pet her. As I reached out, she sniffed my hand, then immediately got up and rubbed vigorously on my hand and arm. Then it jumped into my lap! I knew right then and there that this was the companion for me. LUCAS, male, Terrier Mix, DOB10.2007 – 48cm. Lucas has probably been beaten as if you raise your hand quickly he growls. He behaves well towards other dogs, is house trained, good on the lead and would be great for someone who wants a friend with character. Please call 618 754 635 or visit www.apasa.eu. Zane, about 3 years old, recently went on a home trial and was the perfect dog. He is house trained, very loving, good with other dogs and loves children and attention. The only problem is that he has separation anxiety and needs a little help getting used to being left alone. He is castrated and disease free. Email akirashelter@aol.com or phone 657 689 567. The traditional idea of a family unit being two parents, two children, and a dog, is increasingly outdated – and we’ve become much more used to blended families. Take singer and presenter Stacey Solomon, and her partner, fellow presenter and actor Joe Swash, who have four boys between them, all under one roof: Harry, 13, from Swash’s previous relationship, Zach, 12, and Leighton, 8, from Solomon’s previous relationships, and together they have one-year-old Rex. Admittedly, blending two families together is not always the easiest thing to do. London-born Swash, 38, refers to it as a “long process” with its “ups and downs”, but says “it’s well worth it in the end”. Both Solomon and Swash note it can be a constant effort to keep things running smoothly and everyone happy. “Even sometimes, when you think you’ve got the balance right, something will happen and you’ll have to start again from zero,” says Solomon, 30, with a groan. Swash agrees it’s a “continuous” process, saying, “We still have issues and problems we have to deal with.” And they aren’t alone. So what is the key bit of advice they’d give to anyone in a similar situation? “The best thing we’ve learnt over the years is communication,” says Dagenham-born Solomon. “Trying to be as open and honest as possible with the kids.” She also recommends celebrating the other parents involved, from your previous relationship(s). “It’s very difficult sometimes to do that, and there are lots of different circumstances which determine whether you can or can’t physically do that,” she acknowledges. “No break-up is nice and there are reasons why you broke up with that person, but I think trying to remain as positive, uplifting and happy about that person is the best thing we could’ve done for the kids.” “At the end of the day, it’s for the kids,” continues Swash. “It’s not for us – we’re adults, we’ve had our parents, we’ve had our childhood. It’s our job now to give them the best childhood they could possibly imagine.” The couple have been together since 2016, and even with the parental struggles of coordinating everyone’s different schedules, combined with parenting in a pandemic, Swash says: “We wouldn’t change it for the world – we might even add to it in a few years’ time. We love having a house full of kids and the thing is, when we get old, they’ve got to look after us – so we’re winning! “We’ll never be lonely old people,” he says happily. Stacey Solomon and Joe Swash are in partnership with Pampers (pampers.co.uk).

COSTA BLANCA NORTH

Note from Benny: After 12 years of publication, the Diary is still going strong. Despite several months of lockdown, most of our stalwart entertainers are now dusting themselves down and 'Once more, stepping unto the breach'. Unfortunately, a few groups have gone to the wall, whilst others are taking a breather and will be re-launching their talents either later this year, or during the early part of 2021. So please support your local group when and where you get the opportunity. Don´t forget, all groups in this column are non-profit making and donate all proceeds to local charities. Caprice Ladies Choir: The Choir are gradually getting back to small scale outdoor rehearsals, mixed with an element of online participation, so it will still be a while before they can entertain you again. They are, however, building up their repertoire ready for when they are able to perform safely. For more information about Caprice, check their website: www.capriceladieschoir.com or contact Aileen on 696 514 613. Careline Theatre: This month they will be holding their read thru and auditions for next January's big classic panto, `Sleeping Beauty´. Rehearsals commence in October, 'Covid' willing. They will perform the production over a longer period to allow the audiences to be seated safely. Box Office will open from November. Info on read thru and audition dates: carelinetheatre1@gmail.com

Jávea Players: Buoyed by the success of his `Master of the Musical show´, Roger Brown will next star in 'Bing to Bublé', a compilation of popular songs, on 24th, 25th and 26th September. There will also be fun Fund-raising events on 23rd and 26th October, in the Jávea Players’ Studio, to help raise muchneeded funds as Covid-19 meant the cancellation of the spring production and the summer show could only go ahead with 50% capacity audience. Why not join the Players and keep informed of what’s going on? For more info: www.javeaplayers.com Phoenix Dancers: The Dancers have been working hard, despite this dreaded epidemic. They have a production ready and waiting so if any charity needs them, just let them know when and where. They are still on the lookout for a male singer. The ability to dance as well would be great, but not essential. Anyone interested please get in touch with Phaedra: 670 290 896. Sounds Familiar: The Company are looking forward to their next production `Magic of the Musicals´ to be performed early in 2021. If you are interested in joining this group, or would like more information, please contact Philip on 96 558 1483 or philip@soundsfamiliar.es The Chaplaincy Singers: Due to new Covid rules the Chaplaincy Singers will now present their concert Glorious, an invitation to Joy, on Friday 11 September at the Ermita Sant Josep, La Fustera at 7.30 pm. Tickets are limited so please contact musical director Philip Ashley 965 581 483 or Eileen 607 706 904. Valley Voices: The Voices are hoping to restart rehearsals week beginning September 7th with a new and exciting programme - restrictions allowing of course. The plan is to have live rehearsals, but this may develop into a mixture of Zoom to suit all members. The next production is being hopefully scheduled for December or January. For further information call: 634 301 483 or contact them directly on: valleyvoicesspain@gmail.com

The Drunken Duck, Alfaz Del Pi Pitstop Perfection by Allan Silver

If you fancy a quiet drink, in a bar in a Plaza, where the welcome is warm and the beer is cold, then look no further than The Drunken Duck in Alfaz Del Pi. Gary and Nicki have established a bar that is popular with locals (and not so locals) and always greet you with a smile and good humour. In fact, I'd go as far as to say, their easy going manner means that even in the heat of the day, it’s a place you can take the weight off your feet and quickly recharge your batteries - as well as taking a breather from the heat under the parasols on the terrace. The Drunken Duck is like any decent pub/bar, a community hub with its own pool team and darts. They have regular quiz nights and are always thinking of ideas that make it such a great place. When it comes to food, Nicki points out that they're not a restaurant, but do make good honest homemade bar food such as their home made burgers. Perfect if want a quick drink and some 'pub grub'. I particularly enjoyed their ploughman's which easily filled me up and was great value for money! The Drunken Duck can be found in Salvador Dali Plaza in Alfaz Del Pi. It’s about 100m across from the Casa De Cultura. Open from 10am to midnight, so pop in anytime. They are very active on Facebook (search The Drunken Duck Alfaz) where you can get a feel for what to expect and you can call on 966 58 06 17. For me, it’s the perfect spot to take a breather and easy to recommend. The photos used were taken pre Covid, of course all measures are now being adhered to.

Please call for opening info.
