THE WINNERS OF OUR SMARTPHONE ASTRONOMY PHOTO COMPETITION
A
t long last I can show you the 2 winners of our competition that's been running for the last few months. I had about 30 photos sent to me, which isn't bad for such a specialist field. The 2 pictures are very different, one is of the supermoon, taken over an urbanisation. At first you may think it's an odd choice, but I love the care and timing taken with the position of the moon over the building. I also like the way the exposure is set to make the Moon into a huge splash of light. Well done to Grace Thomas, you obviously have an eye for a great photo.
My second choice was taken by Mark Cook and is of the full Moon. I'm always banging on about the full moon being a difficult time to take a photo, there are no shadows to emphasise the detail. This shot however stands out from so many others. There is a little editing with standard Windows photo viewer to improve the contrast, and the result is terrific. Taken with an iPhone and the photo app I mentioned here a few months ago, the phone is supported so there's no camera shake. It shows what can be achieved by anyone with a standard phone and some patience and imagination, a great result.
A STING IN THE TAIL
I'll continue now with our ongoing look at the constellations of the zodiac, This month it's Scorpio. In September you can find Scorpio not far above the horizon between south and southwest just after full sunset. It's a tricky constellation to make out, a long wiggly set of stars that are best identified with the aid of a book or guide on your phone. Luckily there is a stand out star to help you get your bearings. Antares is a big bright red supergiant star, 300 times bigger than the Sun, so bright in fact that although it takes light 365 years to reach us, it still stands out. Antares has another star orbiting it, only twice as big as the Sun, it orbits so close that it is passing right through the hydrogen atmosphere of Antares. Can you imagine how amazing that must look from any planet nearby? Stars are officially identified with Greek letters, the star delta Scorpio, also has an old Arabic name, Dschubba. Looking a little to the right and up from Antares, you'll see Dschubba, it translates very loosely as 'the Scorpion’s brain', if you find this variable star, you'll know which way round the scorpion is facing. At the other end is the star Shaula, the Scorpion’s sting, it's 270 light years away, but still pretty bright. There is plenty more to find in the Scorpion, a good star book or website will help if you want to learn more. Telescope users might want to find the star cluster M4, it can be tricky so near the horizon, but it is rewarding to find. I've mixed feelings about M4, it was in one of my examinations more years ago than I care to remember, but I got it in the end and passed. Scorpio photo courtesy of the star name registry. That's quite enough for this month, time to go outside and look up, enjoy your my Group Charles Oates, Vega Baja Astrono stargazing.

How different our world is from two years ago. I was personally concerned at the speed that many people were living at, the pollution, climate change and very few people seemed to be contented with their lives. I am a firm believer in Mother Nature turning round on us, trying to give us warnings but of course, everybody was too busy in the world, trying to make money, no time to look over their shoulders, to discover what was happening. Then a huge bomb exploded in the name of COVID. Unfortunately, it took a while for the various governments to react, and it started to take over, with many becoming ill and sadly death was always round the corner. The consequences of COVID will probably always be us, with new variants, and life will never feel the same. On a positive side, I have heard many times that people have discovered the beauty around them and there are many fighting for climate change, especially among the young. The reaction to COVID has been very demanding on the authorities and very sadly the everyday illnesses and conditions have had to take a back seat which of course, must be very frightening for those who have a health problem. At the same time, BREXIT was sort of forgotten but more and more issues are beginning to come to light, usually to the detriment of the UK. For example, empty shelves, and horrors – chickens seem to be disappearing from certain restaurants. However, we have another tragedy - Afghanistan. When I look at the soldiers who have been badly injured and think of the ones who died, I along with many, especially the military, are horrified at the speed at which everything is happening there. So much was given by the forces to try and keep the Taliban out, but our politicians had other thoughts and we are already seeing the consequences. Once again, the risk of terrorism could be on the rise. Nothing is easy but if after reading this, you think the time has come to make sure that you and your family are protected from whatever is around the corner. If in doubt, now is the time to ensure all your documents and paperwork are correct and what is the best you can do for your family. ● Need any help, just call us on 966 461 690, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

www.femalefocusonline.com Darling grandson turned 3 last month - still can't believe I am old enough to have grandchildren. This means he now goes to big school, along with his sister who says she is going to watch out for him because, at nearly 7, she is big enough to make sure he is OK at all times. She says this flicking her head and with a tone that sounds just like a mother hen clucking over her chicks. I had to go back to the UK last month so missed the worst of the heat wave. Whilst there I had to buy trousers and a cardigan as foolishly I believed my English friends when they told me it was summer weather.... Won't make that mistake again! Getting back made me realise once again how lucky we are, and sometimes how easily we take for granted simple things like eating out on the terrace and no socks and jumpers on the washing line for most of the year - as well as being able to dry things on the washing line all year. I know, it doesn't take much to keep me happy ..... Until next time, Lesley Pick up your next issue on 5 October. Deadlines: Editorial & Advertising - 12 noon - 20 September. Visit Elche - the shoe capital of Spain D id you know around 42% of shoes produced in Spain are made in Elche? A trip to this shoe capital is a must if you love shoes and quality brands.
Elche is home to more than 1,000 shoe factories while the neighbouring city of Elda is another famous shoemaking centre and home to the José María Amat Amer Footwear Museum.
The museum in Elda houses an enormous collection of shoes and machinery used to make footwear. There is even a collection of famous shoes from celebrities such as Julio Iglesias, Rafa Nadal, Andrés Iniesta, the Duchess of Alba and Pope John XXIII. You can see shoes being made at arguably the largest shoe factory outlet in Europe, Salvador Artesano in Calle Almenara on the edge of Elche. Here you can learn about making shoes - and buy brands at knockdown prices. The outlet sells its own brands - Wisconsin, Salvador Artesano, Esther Méndez, Dimo and Domenico Pedone - as well as some of the best brands including Levi's, Mustang and Geox. Further along the N340 heading towards Alicante airport is Elche Business Park in Torrellano, home to 319 companies including shoe brands including Pikolinos, Panama Jack, Mustang, Geox and Gioseppo. Pikolinos has a museum as well as a shop where you can move through the history of shoemaking. History of Elche shoe industry Until the middle of the 19th century, Elche was still an agricultural city. Some landowners, realising there was little money to be made in farming, diversified into making espadrilles from the local esparto grass. To compete with thriving shoe industries in other parts of Spain, they decided to specialise. Elche concentrated on men's shoes and budget footwear. Elda became known for its glamorous women's shoes and Villena focused on the children's market. In the 1960s, Elche shoes conquered the international market and in the 1990s the council set up an industrial estate in Torrellano where modern factories could be built. Elche is also home to the largest palm grove in Europe with more than 200,000 trees. Make time to visit the city centre and the Elche palm grove during your trip. Financial Advice from our family to yours.
Female Focus Magazine September 2021
here are certain jobs (not just in the financial sector) which require companies to be regulated to legally carry out their roles. Being a financial adviser is one of them.
Individuals could be forgiven to presume that any financial advisory firm advertising in magazines, newspapers or on the radio are fully licensed and regulated – unfortunately, that is not always the case. Regulations and licences are vitally important as they provide clients with a level of protection, not only when advice is given, but also post advice should recommendations ever be deemed inappropriate. Equally important, however, is that the individual you are dealing with is fully qualified to act as a financial adviser. The UK has tightened its laws in recent years meaning that advisers now must obtain level 4 status (Diploma level) before they are able to give advice. This requirement has not yet reached the Spanish coastline, but it should hopefully only be a matter of time. At Logic, we are proud to have two fully qualified, Diploma status advisers in Ian and George. This provides our clients with peace of mind that we continue to build our family- run business for the long-term; to be sustainable, licenced and regulated moving through the generations. Clients have certainty with who they are dealing with and know exactly who is going to turn up at every review meeting. You don´t always get this stability with other companies who have a high turnover of staff. We can offer advice on any aspect of financial planning but the main areas we typically cover are as follows:
R R R R R R
Explanation of Residency & Tax Residency here in Spain. Tax efficient investments solutions for Spanish tax residents. Flexible pension product solutions. Cross-border tax planning. Highlighting differences between the UK and Spanish tax systems. Holistic financial analysis/planning to cover an individual or couple's overall position.
The events over the last few years have created several questions, especially for individuals who have recently moved here or who are considering a move over to Spain. Processes which we were all familiar with have changed and will no doubt continue to change moving forward. If you have any questions or would like clarification on any doubts you may have, then please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be happy to assist.

So many times we go into a changing room full of anticipation at how great we will look in a chosen
garment, then... "Bam!" We feel crushed...it looks awful, does this sound familiar? Why? Well often because we pick things that we like the colour of, but don’t suit our body shape. Do you know your body shape? Knowing what shape we are can help us choose the most flattering of outfits. Through stages of our life we often change shape, so take a look at your wardrobe... Do the clothes in there make you feel good and suit your shape now? I know since lock down my shape has grown! My wardrobe has taken a slight change until I’m focused to lose weight and fit back into those tight fitted dresses again. Until then I can still feel great in a looser design. Not only should your clothes sit beautifully and proportionately to enhance your body shape, but most of all they should make you feel great! Your body type is the outline of your structure so it’s also good to know your vital statistics, so grab that tape measure, make sure it’s not too tight (and maybe a glass of wine for the shock in my case!). Measure from tip to tip of your shoulders, for the bust measure across the fullest part, the waist measure just above your belly button, for your hips measure the circumference of the fullest part of your buttocks. Keep a note as this can really help when determining what will fit you and what your shape is. The MimisKru team recommend you spend a few minutes online and research what your body shape is or better still come and visit Lisa or Fiona in our boutique! This will really help you gain confidence in the clothes you choose, and they will advise you how to put outfits together. It’s not just the shape of the clothes or colour but considering accessories also helps create that perfect look; the right necklace, belt, bag or scarf can also take an outfit from perfectly OK to gorgeous! Maybe like me you have garments in your wardrobe that need teaming up to make an outfit, how about bringing the item to us and let us help you find the final piece of the puzzle from our varied stock. The MimisKru teams love to make you feel good about yourself and now, not only can we cater for all your hair and beauty needs in Jávea, we can add some smiles to your wardrobe from our boutique in Centro Commercial Las Brisas, (next to the Parrot Bar), Carretera Les Marines (km3), 03700, Dénia. We are in an amazing location a few steps from the beach and some great restaurants. A great place for Mimi time! Come along and meet the team and spoil yourself for a morning or afternoon! Or come along to our Jávea branch; MimisKru Hair and Beauty; where we stock a few dresses, bags and accessories! Gift vouchers are available in both boutique and salon, giving that special person a great choice of treatments, clothes or accessories. ● Local 12, Edificio Caribe, Av del Pla 129, Jávea. Happy 10th Birthday Todos Juntos Jávea
From new born babies to centenarians, over the last decade, Todos Juntos Jávea has been here to help. 10 years ago a group of international Jávea residents created a foundation to help local people. That charity is Todos Juntos Jávea (All Together Jávea). The mission of TJJ is simple- a desire to give something back to this beautiful town and its community. Jávea may give the impression of a wealthy care-free town, but it is not so for everyone. The charity reaches out to struggling families and organisations, usually through a request from Social Services or a school. Whether because of illness, unemployment or tragedy, people can suddenly face serious financial difficulties. TJJ aims to restore hope and dignity to these families. Perhaps the most heart warming case was baby Olaya, born in 2016 with Brittle Bone Disease. Once Olaya was mobile TJJ provided specialised foam mattresses so that she could play in her nursery without risk of injury. 2016 also saw the terrifying fires. As a rapid response charity, TJJ provided clothes, food and temporary accommodation for many whose homes were damaged. In addition, TJJ supports a number of local organisations when no other funding is available. Three years ago, it began a very rewarding relationship with the Autism Association in Jávea, and has now donated more than 10,000€ for specialised sensory equipment and a summer school. Santa María de Betania is a day centre which provides meals, therapies and social interaction for Jávea’s elderly. TJJ has updated the kitchen facilities and provided air conditioning. TJJ was delighted to work alongside other organisations to support T.A.P.I.S. when they moved into new premises. T.A.P.I.S. is an occupational therapy centre for young adults with mental health problems. In the past 10 years TJJ has raised a staggering 100,000€ in numerous ways, from fabulous dinner dances and fashion shows to casino and race nights. Concerts Costa Blanca and Café Cortado have also been constant supporters, not forgetting the school children of Jávea who designed the TJJ logo and have sung their hearts out in the Pueblo at Christmas to raise money. As Todos Juntos has no overheads, all the money raised goes directly to good causes. The only continuous source of funds is through annual membership. Apart from the financial aid, it is wonderful to have people involved in supporting this very local charity, whether through ideas, volunteering or supporting events. Jávea is a wonderful place to live, wouldn’t you like to support as many people as possible to be able to enjoy it? Please become a member of TJJ and give this fantastic local charity your support. PARLIAMENTARY OMBUDSMAN’S PROVISIONAL REPORT VINDICATES WASPI WOMEN WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) women in the UK and Overseas are calling on the UK Government to urgently pay compensation following the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s (PHSO) report which concludes that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) “didn’t get it right” when informing women about changes to their State Pension age, resulting in maladministration. WASPI, which represents 3.8 million women, has been repeatedly dismissed by successive Governments who claim that women were given ample warning, but PHSO findings confirm this was not true. Rather, the report finds that it was not a lack of capability that delayed DWP from writing directly to affected women. Instead, the DWP did not even explore writing to women affected until it reviewed “depressing” research which it commissioned itself on awareness levels amongst women impacted. Furthermore, leaflets and pension statements which were distributed contained inaccurate or unclear information. Only in 2009, 14 years after the changes were passed did the DWP decide it was necessary to raise awareness of the changes. The impacts have been devastating, leaving many women with little to no time to prepare. Coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic which has left many WASPI women without employment, the Government needs to urgently compensate all women affected rather than making them wait even longer while the PHSO completes further rounds of its investigation. Lynda Armstrong Co-Ordinator of WASPI International said: “Today’s provisional findings reinforce what we, unfortunately, knew all along; that the DWP failed to adequately inform 3.8 million 1950s born women that their State Pension age would be increasing. We have been tirelessly campaigning on this issue since 2015 and have been repeatedly ignored and dismissed by the UK Government. The Government can no longer cover up its failings. It’s time, once and for all, to resolve this issue.” About WASPI WASPI stands for Women Against State Pension Inequality. The campaign represents almost 3.8 million women born in the 1950s who are suffering because they weren’t adequately informed by the Government that their state pension age would be increasing, and who now have no time to put in place alternative financial arrangements to see them through to the new state retirement age, which in some cases is now 66. Further information about WASPI may be found at www.waspi.co.uk and on the WASPI International Facebook page and Twitter.

Walk Your Way Well
Page 11
Female Focus Magazine September 2021
by Niamh O'Sheehan
TO WALK: to advance or travel on foot at a moderate speed or pace; move by advancing the feet alternately so that there is always one foot on the ground in bipedal locomotion. That sounds straightforward enough right? But, did you know that there's a right way, a wrong way and all manner of other ways we can walk? You may not place a lot of emphasis on how you do it, but by walking correctly will ensure the following: • keep your bones and joints aligned properly • decrease wear and tear on your joints, muscles, and ligaments • prevent back, hip, neck, and leg pain
• reduce muscle aches and fatigue • reduce the risk of injuries • improve your balance and stability
Isn't all that worth making the effort to fix how we step away our days? And there's more! When you see someone approaching in the distance, but can't yet identify their face, it's often possible you'll recognise them by how they walk. There is personality in how one carries themselves. Your gait, posture and pace can tell a story. More importantly, how you walk can affect how you feel. I promise I'm not making this up! Studies have shown subjects who were prompted to walk in a more depressed style, with less arm movement and their shoulders rolled forward, experienced worse moods than those who were induced to walk in a happier style. With this is mind there are a few adjustments we can make to how we carry ourselves that will not only improve our health, demeanour and posture but will actually improve our state of mind. Here's my Top Tips for a happier healthier walk: Keep your head up - focus on standing tall gaze forward. There's lots to see. Lengthen your back - avoid slouching, hunching, or leaning forward. Keep your shoulders down. You look great. Engage your core - pull your belly button in toward your spine. It's just so good for you. Swing your arms - gently swing your arms back and forth at your sides. Relax and enjoy. Step from heel to toe - maintain a steady heel-to-toe gait and stop shuffling! So, in summary, to prevent injury or too much wear and tear on your muscles and joints, try to avoid the following habits. • Don’t look down. • Don’t take overlong strides. • Don’t roll your hips. • Don’t slouch. • Don’t walk in the wrong shoes. Lots of this might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how we sometimes ignore the simplest of things as we are tied up in the stresses and strains of daily life. Take some time to address any bad habits now and get yourself a great looking walk! #WalkYourWayWell

The most common symptoms of COVID19 are fatigue, fever, and cough. However, some people, very often children, may experience less common symptoms. One of these being a rash. Some general symptoms associated with many COVID19 rashes include: • Skin discolouration: Rashes are typically discoloured in comparison to neighbouring skin. • Swelling: The affected area may appear swollen or puffy compared to surrounding skin. • Itching: Many, but not all, types of COVID-19 rash may itch. • Hives: Itchy patches or wheals that resemble hives. These most often affect the limbs and torso. • Rash with blisters: Rash can appear with blisters that may look similar to chickenpox usually found on the torso area. • Lace-like pattern: Rashes can have rings of skin discolouration that form a lace or net-like pattern, typically affects the legs area. • Pinpoint spots: Rash consists of dark pinpoint spots. The legs are the most commonly impacted area. Seek advice from a GP if you are suffering from any of the above symptoms. A PCR test can be done to diagnose a positive result for the virus. A blood test can also be performed to check if there are antibodies in the bloodstream, if positive this is a sign your immune system is trying to fight off a disease and can also determine the amount of antibodies you have against the virus.

Dates changed for Dénia's D*na Gastronomic Festival

énia is famous for its cuisine and the Dénia red prawn - you could say gastronomy is in its DNA. So it’s no wonder that the Dénia D*na Gastronomic Festival was launched. For 2021, the festival takes on a new format adapted to the COVID situation and has been renamed D*na Restaurant. The event was due to be held during the All Saints weekend from Friday October 29 to Monday November 1. It will now take place during the long weekend from Friday December 3 to Monday December 6. Regional tourism councillor Francesc Colomer said the date was changed to tie up with the Michelin Gala being held in Valencia on December 14, when they will present the Michelin Guide Spain & Portugal 2022 and unveil the new selection of Michelin stars. Quique Dacosta, whose restaurant of the same name in Dénia has three Michelin stars, is the gastronomic coordinator of the Valencia event as well as creative director of the D*na Festival in Dénia. The hospitality sector, which was badly hit by the pandemic, will play a starring role in this year’s festival with Dénia restaurants, bars and cafes getting involved. Visitors can enjoy a variety of menus starring local produce, tastings, pairings with music, show cooking and guest chefs. Dénia is proud of its gastronomy and has been a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2015. To honour its prestigious title, Dénia holds various events relating to gastronomy including the tapas trail, international red prawn competition and the D*na Gastronomic Festival. Jávea Feral Cat Association Padel Tournament and Gala Day on Saturday 18 September The first one to take place in Jávea! The event will start at 10.30am and will consist of a Padel Tournament, Stalls, Luxury Raffle, plus from 1pm a BBQ and entertainment including singers and dancers throughout the afternoon. There will be small games and demonstrations, and advice from vets and volunteers. The main aim of the day is to raise funds to continue to trap and neuter feral and abandoned cats in Jávea which then leads to adoptions in some cases and also is stopping the cat population from breeding. The raffle will be promoted all day with the draw at around 6pm and the prizes are fantastic including a sunset boat trip, professional family portrait, assorted restaurant vouchers, luxury beauty treatments and luxury drinks hamper. An auction will also take place for an original painting which has been designed and painted by our local artist Emma Jane Lawton.

HELP is here for you
HELP of Marina Alta was founded over 37 years ago to serve the community and they continue today to provide essential services to many in need, listed below are some of the services they can help you with and the telephone numbers you need.
Working in the Denia hospital, HELP volunteers deliver a help desk service and translation services. They also visit those who have no family and backup with a Social Worker to see what help may be needed when the patient goes home or give advise if they need to go to a residential home. Once it is permitted again their visiting team will return too. For the HELP Desk call 966 429 346. When patients return home, equipment can be borrowed to facilitate their care - wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, etc are available through the shop in Teulada as well as La Xara. HELP also own a large stock of hospital quality beds which can be provided for those patients at home who need them. For equipment call 966 427 044. There are a range of support services on offer - we have qualified specialist nurses for some conditions and carers. When necessary we can offer help with transport to hospital and medical centres. These may be subsidised in some cases. Where long term care is needed, HELP can provide assistance in understanding the support available, either through the Spanish Social Security system and/or from the UK - some UK benefits can be paid even if you are resident in Spain. HELP can also recommend qualified carers if funding is available. A friendly coffee morning is held at Sol Park Tennis Club in Moraira for the vulnerable, lonely and partners caring for their loved ones who need some respite. Contact 634 345 014 for info. HELP runs a Parkinsons Support Group in their Activity Centre, in La Xara every last Monday of the month. Everyone is welcome, carers, loved ones etc. Call 634 301 677 for more information.
As people in our area age, suffer accidents or illness and finally face end of life, it can sometimes be difficult for families to provide the care and support we might wish for. HELP is one of the key charities who fill this gap. If you or someone you know needs help, please get in touch for an assessment to be arranged. Many of our team are volunteers although we do use professionals when more appropriate. These services are all made possible through fundraising and particularly the charity shops in Teulada and La Xara. We are always looking for more volunteers and this can be a great way to get to know people too.
HELP also fundraise and donate to many other associations in need. More recently and over many months we have been helping to feed those in need. Every week, 135 people receive meals with the help of HELP.
For further information on any of the above, please contact our President, Candida Wright on 634 345 014 or via email at president@helpmarinaalta.org. Also you can call our office on 966 427 044 or email at office@helpmarinaalta.org.
Visit KARUNAWA - a joint venture between Spread some Sunshine and Project4All. Our charity shop is based in Jávea Park, just a few doors away from Digbys Bar. Our prices will be low and our message is clear “LET’S HELP COMBAT HUMAN HUNGER”.

Lentil Pancakes
Rich in protein, these lentil pancakes are super quick and easy to make. Gluten free and packed with flavour, they are great as an accompaniment to a curry, or they can be eaten on their own, with a green salad as a wrap, or served with a yogurt dip, or hummus. The pancakes can be cooked in advance and reheated just before serving. Cooked pancakes will keep for up to a week stored in the fridge in an airtight container. Ingredients 200g red split lentils 1 inch of ginger l small onion 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 1 teaspoon garam masala 1 teaspoon chilli flakes or fresh chillies chopped 1 teaspoon black pepper Salt to taste TOP TIP A Curry On Cooking curry kit can be used to replace the spices, just add half a sachet to the lentil batter. TIME Prep time 10 mins plus soak 1 hour. Cooking Time 15 mins
Rinse the lentils until the water runs clear. Place in a bowl, cover with cold water and leave to soak for 1 to 2 hours. The lentils will soak up the water, swell and soften. Drain the lentils and add to a food processor, along with the ginger and onion blend all the ingredients to form a batter like consistency. To the batter add salt, pepper, garam masala, the chillis and cumin seeds and mix really well. Let the batter sit for 5 mins to thicken. Heat a non-stick frying pan to a medium heat; ladle the batter into the pan and with the back of a tablespoon swirl the batter into a circle. Cook for 4-5 minutes, using a fish slice gently check to see if the edges are cooked, before flipping make sure the pancake is free from the pan, if turned over too early the pancake tends to turns to mush. Flip and cook the other side for a couple of minutes press down and flip over to check if it is cooked. Place on plate and continue to cook the rest of the pancakes.
Missing your curry fix? Since BREXIT, we have not managed to get our kits into Spain and into the shops. Currently we are dispatching from the UK to Europe; Please email your order to keepcalm@curryoncooking.com with the delivery address, we’ll work out the cost of goods and postage for you.

15 Things Kids Want from Their Parents As parents, there are 15 main things that young children will want from you as much as possible. If you can do your best to provide these things to the best of your ability, your child's future will be brighter than ever. Here are the top 15 things kids want from their parents: 1. A Good Goodnight. Going to bed is so much better when parents spend some quality time with their children. Take time out of your day to tuck them in, sing them a song, or read them a bedtime story. If you don't have any books, you might consider making up a story yourself, or telling them about your childhood. Children are very receptive to parents who use their imaginations, too! 2. Affection. Showing affection is one of the essential experiences that children have while growing up. Parents should always remember to give lots of praise, cuddles, and love, even after a long day. Even a friendly conversation one-on-one can be a tremendous help to a child who wants to be heard. Share some time asking your child about their day and what they enjoyed most. 3. Private Time. Having a good connection with your children means giving them your full and undivided attention as much as you can. Children will benefit from feeling like their time is valued, especially if it's planned out and isn't rushed. With more than one child, it's essential to provide each one with their time with you. It's hard to connect when things are busy and loud, so let them choose a place and activity that you can enjoy together. 4. Positive Food Advocates. Lots of children are picky, but that's no reason to throw in the towel and serve up pizza every night. Children need to learn that healthy foods can also be delicious and satisfying, and that starts at home in the kitchen. Work together on meals, or even help them to grow some vegetables in the garden. Children should learn early that dessert is not the only delicious meal, so that they're set up for success in the long-run. 5. Plans to Look Forward To. Give them fun things to look forward to with you. You might plan fun events on the weekend, or surprise them with weekday activities if they've been wellbehaved. Showing your children that you're excited about quality time will make them feel good about themselves and their relationship with you. 6. Conversations Before Bedtime. Bedtime means winding down, but this is also a great time to take advantage of beneficial conversations. Set aside time before they go to sleep to talk about their day, their friends, or anything else they can think of. Allow them to lead the conversation; kids like to feel heard. 7. Time to Play Outside. Studies have shown just how beneficial and vital outdoor play can be for children. Not only children, either; people at every age benefit from being outside! Encourage kids to stay off screens and televisions and to explore the world outside instead. Allow them to spend as much time as they want outdoors, either playing games, going for walks, or socializing with neighbourhood children. 8. Time to Watch Their Favourite Show. The only thing better than getting to watch their favourite show is watching is with a loved one! Grab a blanket and settle in for a good cuddle while your child enjoys their most preferred shows. You can let this be a quiet time, or you might ask them questions to engage them. 9. Discipline When Necessary. Children need guidance when it comes to learning about appropriate behaviours and responses. Showing discipline might not be a parent's favourite thing to do, but it does teach a child that they are invested in them and want the best for them. Even though they might not show it, children do find value in being disciplined.
10. Leave Special Messages. Surprises are always pleasant, even if it's a little note or present 'just because.' Consider putting notes in your child's lunch bag or backpack, especially if they're having a bit of a rough day. Having that little jolt of happiness is always lovely when its unexpected. 11. To Be Silly. Sometimes children are looking for approval to be silly, but the best way to give them permission is for parents to be silly themselves! Playing dress-up with your kids and acting out stories will help them to come out of their shell and work on their imagination. Kids can be wildly creative when they don't feel like they have to hold back or act a certain way. 12. To Be Less Stressed. Surprisingly, children are very observant and receptive. They will often notice when their parents are stressed or upset, and it takes a toll on them as well. Many children want to see their parents happy and relaxed, which in turn makes them feel more positive as well. Regardless of what's bothering you, try to keep things simple. 13. Play Dates. Adult time is fun, but it can also be beneficial for everyone to have play dates with other parents, too! Children can socialise together, or they can hang out with the adults and become comfortable with your friends. 14. Guidance. Children don't have all the answers; in fact, adults rarely have all of them either! Children will look to their parents for guidance, though, in all kinds of situations. They might look to you when they meet a stranger, face a new experience, or are unsure how to express their feelings. If you've established a level of trust in your relationship, your child will feel safe enough to be set in the right direction by you. 15. Approval. Parents sometimes don't realise it, but their children are always looking to them for approval for all kinds of things. More than anything, they want to make their parents proud! Keep an eye out for opportunities to champion them, even if it's the smallest achievement. Doing so can boost their self-confidence and their willingness to try new things. Essential Things to Keep in Mind Parenting is tough and covering all of these things every day isn't always possible. However, keep these 15 things kids want from their parents in mind and practice them as often as you can. They will help you to build a strong relationship with your children and encourage them to flourish into successful, young adults.

BUY A RUIN and a village too
AR AWAY FROM TARMAC, EXHAUST FUMES AND THE STRESS OF CITY LIFE, there is an alternative lifestyle to be had in more than 3,000 deserted villages in Galicia, Castilla y León, Aragón, and Asturias. Although many cannot be sold due to the lack of basic paperwork, hundreds are on the market, seeking a second chance in the shape of a new owner. In the second half of the 20th century, there was strong emigration from rural life to the city. Spaniards emigrated to seek better living conditions; to get a job and have better healthcare. Nothing new here – it happens the world over, hundreds of villages in rural area gradually depopulating. There are many towns which yesterday were part of history but today are abandoned and in ruins. They deserve an opportunity to be saved.
Demonstrators often march to the Spanish capital calling for better access to infrastructure and services in Spain’s dwindling towns and villages. It’s a demand for an urgent solution to Spain’s problem of depopulation a ‘revolt against an empty Spain.’ They demand a plan to help them live in dwindling villages and in declining provincial towns. Politicians have no real answer. It is a simple case of demographics. In Spain, 48% of municipalities have a population density of less than 12.5 inhabitants per square kilometre, a figure the European Union considers to be exceptionally low. Between 2011 and 2017, approximately 62% of towns lost inhabitants, according to government data, and even cities with a population between 20,000 and 50,000 have also been in decline. Today in Spain, even 26 provincial capitals are losing inhabitants. And if these capitals are declining, imagine what is happening in towns and villages. The haemorrhaging cannot be stopped, equally the revolt of an empty Spain won’t be silenced. Where does this lead?
&
In order to sell ruins or indeed whole villages, specialist estate agencies exist. One such agent has 110 villages on its books already to sell. The average price for a village lies somewhere between 200,000€ and 450,000€. Restoration of old houses is not excessively expensive; the walls are normally sound and make restoration so much easier. In some cases, grants are available from regional government and the European Union. ....continued on next page

Abandoned villages are getting this second chance because, after years of languishing in forgotten enclaves, these empty villages are back in demand. Although 70% of purchases come from abroad, tending to be British, Belgian, and French, an increasing number of Spaniards are buying into a holiday home or rural life. Buyers want to set up a tourism business or simply live in the countryside. There are also investors interested in hamlets to renovate and sell on. The purchase of an abandoned village has shown itself to be more than just a short-term trend. That is why there are an increasing number of owners, who had previously forgotten their inheritance, are now sorting out their paperwork in order to put an abandoned home or hamlet on the market. Selling these hamlets is not easy. Agents have to ensure they have the ‘right to sell.’ And that means lots of paperwork. The more property owners, or more likely their heirs, more paperwork is necessary. First, they have to locate the owners – some are dead, others have moved on. Then they have to reach an agreement. The Agent's job involves visiting the public notary, the land registry, and local councils in search of necessary paperwork. In short, the most difficult part of an entire transaction is making the village legally sellable in the first place. Local councils offer a good deal of support. They are keen to see these villages injected with new life and help by providing details of the basic infrastructure and property boundaries.

We can also help arrange plants and have a large list of specialist plant suppliers so we can source the plants you require along with other more technical information such as irrigation systems, supply networks for future lighting, plumbing etc. 3. Thirdly, and very wisely - use Charlesworth Gardens for a full design and project management for your garden, as often there are many questions that regular builders don’t have the experience of dealing with when talking about the garden. Sometimes problems can arise and having the designer available, with on-site visits can help deal with situations without changing plans too much, and then making sure that the technical information is understood and dealt with correctly, to make sure your garden only gets better with time. Designing a garden can be a far more technical job than many people appreciate and having a creative designer that understands how best to get what you need from a space; the pitfalls, and problem areas, can really make a difference in your budget and the overall impact of how your garden looks and functions. If you are in the beginning process of dealing with an architect, reforming your house and garden then contact Charlesworth Gardens so at the end of the day you will have something to cherish and enjoy for years to come. ● For more information please give us a call on 696 283 704, email info@charlesworthgardens.com or visit www.charlesworthgardens.com, www.artificial-grass-spain.com

Generous final gesture
Defibrilator purchased by TM Lions
MABS President Jacqui Phillips MBE was presented with a cheque for 4,665€ by Carole Thorn on behalf of Amigos de Benitachell which closed last year. The charity shop, which was based in Benitachell opened in 1998 and Carole had been involved for the last 12 years.
Teulada Moraira Lions are always looking to help those in need in our local community, so when we received a request from our local Civil Protection team for a Defibrilator to be carried in the ambulance we had previously helped to fund, it didn’t take us long to agree to fund this.
Sadly, with an aging group of volunteers and many leaving to head back to the UK it became unviable to continue and with a heavy heart they wound down. The outstanding balance of funds were distributed between 3 very worthy local causes – the Women´s refuge in Pedreguer, Project 4 All – feeding the homeless and the MABS Cancer Support Foundation. Jacqui thanked Carole and Paula Gorton who represented the association and said that the generous donation will be used to cover 3 months’ rent for the respite facilities which MABS offers to cancer patients in Teulada. Afterwards coffee and cake were enjoyed by all, including some of the MABS volunteers at the Beriloche Bar in Moraira.
Defibrillators are devices that restore a normal heartbeat by sending an electric pulse or shock to the heart. They are used to prevent or correct an arrhythmia, a heartbeat that is uneven or that is too slow or too fast. Defibrillators can also restore the heart's beating if the heart suddenly stops. In the hands of the trained staff on the ambulance and given the incidence of heart problems in our area, particularly given the age profile, we think this is an excellent way to help those in need. Such donations by the TM Lions are only possible because of the generosity of our supporters. Our popular charity shop – the Lion's Den – is open again. It can be found a couple of doors away from Letters R Us beneath the Pepe La Sal supermarket on the Centro Comercial, Moraira, just past the fountain roundabout on Ctra Moraira-Teulada. If you’d like to know more about the work of the TM Lions, please take a look at our web page – www.tmlions.com. There are also details here of how to get involved. Have you thought about joining us? It can be a good way to get to know people. We also have a GoFundMe page if you would like to support us – go to https://www.gofundme.com/f/teulada-moraira-lions.

The choir "Cantãmus" is proud to announce their first concert since getting back together earlier this year.
They will be performing "For The Love Of Music" at the Ermita San Josep in La Fustera (Benissa Coast) on Thursday 30th September. The music is a beautiful collection of songs that are all inspirational, religious, or uplifting. Under the direction of Philip Ashley, the choir has worked to present a concert designed to leave the audience feeling positive and joyous. The rehearsals themselves have been full of fun and laughter after many months of not being able to meet up and sing. The love that the group has for their music shines through when they sing the selection which is how the title for the show was chosen. There will be two performances on 30th September at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Doors for both performances will open at 2pm and 7pm respectively.

Lovers of classical choral works… Do you sing? Are you a Tenor? Montgó Chorale welcomes new members and especially hopes to recruit more tenors! The Covid pandemic has prevented the choir giving its regular performances for the last 17 months, but they have continued to rehearse using zoom and, when restrictions allowed, in a member’s beautiful garden. However, they have been back rehearsing live in Bar Mediterraneo, Teulada on Monday evenings 6:30pm - 8:30pm. The staff there have provided a large room and a friendly welcome. The choir took a summer break from full rehearsals but will hopefully reconvene this month with a “Come and Sing” evening for people interested in joining the choir to attend. Montgó Chorale has members from a range of nationalities and ages. However, they welcome new members and especially hope to recruit more tenors! They sing a range of classical choral works. Their current repertoire includes Schubert Mass No 2, and Fauré’s Requiem. They sing under the experienced baton of Musical Director Aileen Lightfoot, in the hope that a Christmas concert can be planned for December this year. They have just appointed a new accompanist, Kirsty Glen and are enjoying working with her.
Booking is essential as tickets are limited due to social distancing rules. A portion of the tickets sales will be given to Caritas to help them continue their work supporting local families.
Since its founding 15 years ago, the choir has, through its many acclaimed concerts in Pedreguer and Jávea amongst other venues, raised considerable funds for local charities such as Caritas and the Convent Day Centre in Jávea which cares for the elderly and Alzheimer's sufferers
Tickets are priced at 10€ and are available by phone on 965 581 483 or online at https://www.philipashley.com/boxoffice.php

QUESTIONS TO ASK AN ESTATE AGENT BEFORE USING THEIR SERVICES As a home buyer or seller, you have plenty of estate agents on the Costa Blanca to help you. Here are some questions to ask the estate agents before you decide who to work with.
Selling a property on the Costa Blanca ● How much do you charge? Ask what their commission is or whether they charge a set fee. ● Are there any other fees? Make sure what marketing costs such as a For Sale board, photos, videos and advertising are included in the above price. ● How will you advertise my property? Make sure they advertise extensively in the right media - online and offline. ● How quickly do you think you can sell the property? See if they have potential buyers lined up. ● What type of contract would you ask me to sign? Would they want sole selling rights or could you go with multiple estate agents? ● What is the local property market like at the moment? This will indicate that they know the property market, what price you are likely to get and how much demand there is. ● Are they a member of an accredited association? Accreditations are a good representation of good practise.
Buying a property on the Costa Blanca As above, you should ask questions to see what the estate agents know about the local market and property prices. You should also find out: ● What services will they offer you as a buyer?
● Can they help you to arrange mortgages? ● Do they come to the notary with you to complete the house purchase? ● Will they help you to arrange a survey? ● Will they ensure to check the property is legally built and does not have any debts? ● If you are new arrivals in Spain, will they help you get your NIE/ TIE and open a bank account? Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com Our property section on the following pages will ensure you find the perfect agent for your needs, whether buying or selling.
