The importance of eye tests this Diabetes Day

Specsavers Ópticas on the Costa Blanca are reminding people of the importance of regular eye tests to support World Diabetes Day (14 November). Lisa James from Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar explains that many people with diabetes do not get any symptoms, which means it can take up to 10 years before they are diagnosed1. However, if it is left untreated it can cause damage to the eyes, heart, kidneys, and feet. Around 1 in 3 people with diabetes develop some form of eye health complication, according to the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF)2. Lisa explains: ‘14.8% of adults in Spain are living with diabetes3 and in Europe that number is over 61 million. Almost 1 in 2 adults (44%) with diabetes remain undiagnosed5. This means that there are 240 million people who are at risk of developing serious eye health complications and even sight loss.’ How diabetes affects your eyes A complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, which can occur when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the back of the eye. If left untreated it can cause blindness. Lisa adds: ‘Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in working age adults, even in developed countries, 5 so it’s hugely important that diabetes is detected early and monitored correctly to minimise the risk of avoidable sight loss. ‘At Specsavers Ópticas, we offer digital retinal photography free of charge as part of a standard eye test for customers aged over 40. Let's hope it doesn't mean that we are going to have a winter that lasts long into next year. Remembrance Day is coming up very soon so buy your poppy and wear it with pride...lest we forget. Everything is now focusing on the upcoming festive period and although it is hard to believe, Christmas literally is just around the corner. As I always say, I am trying to get myself better organised this year.... one year it might actually happen, although all the best plans just never seem to materialise. LOOKING AT TAURUS IN THE NIGHT SKY

November is a great time to have a look at some of the treasures of the night sky in Taurus. Most of us know of the bull constellation from astrology, in the real universe, it contains 2 of the most wonderful sights in the sky. These are the star clusters, the Pleiades and the Hyades Star clusters can be wondrous things, groups of stars close to each other, sometimes many hundreds of them, all kept near each other by gravity. This month if you go out on a clear night after about 9.30pm and look in the east, a little way above the horizon, you should see a sideways 'V' of stars, a bit like an arrowhead. These stars are the Hyades, which in mythology formed the nose of Taurus the bull. They're incredible cluster of stars, and one of the first things to look at for anyone starting with a telescope. Big telescopes have counted 132 stars, but even with a small telescope or binoculars we can see more than enough, to make a fabulous sight. Now for my favourite star cluster, M 45, the Pleiades, or 7 Sisters which is a little way above and to the right of the Hyades. It's difficult to miss, even on a poor night you should be able to see 4 or 5 stars very close together. Now look through your binoculars, it's a real ooh aah sight. Instead of 4 or 5 stars, you will see what looks a hundred, all surrounded in a thin gas cloud lit by the star Merope. The gas cloud used to be believed to be left over from the formation of these stars, a mere 500 million years ago, now we know the cluster just happens to be passing through it. This fabulous cluster is about 410 light years away so when the light you are seeing now began its journey to your eyes, king Charles the first was on the English throne. As with most clusters it's slowly dispersing, so if you want to see it, you only have 200 million years until it's gone! If you're the kind of person who likes to read, and enjoys a good story, it's worth looking up some of these names like the Pleiades, and how they were related to Orion. The ancient Greek stories and myths from which so many of our stars and constellations get their names are quite fascinating, and very often downright weird to our modern sensibilities. It's also surprising how many modern great books have pinched story lines and themes from the ancients. Ciudad Patricia Celebrates 40 Years
On 10th October, Residents, Staff, Guests and Dignitaries gathered at Ciudad Patricia to celebrate their 40th anniversary. The day-long celebrations began at 10 with a Batuca – a drum band – leading residents from the main entrance to the Central Building. The mayor of Benidorm gave a speech where he highlighted the importance of Adriano Care's – the owners of Ciudad Patirica - commitment to the resort: "This project is much more than a business project. If we talk about the history of Ciudad Patricia in these 40 years, we talk about 40 years of attention and happiness. Especially for all those who today share life in Benidorm, but who come from other places. I want to congratulate all those who have made it possible for Ciudad Patricia and this project to celebrate its birthday, and tell them that in Benidorm we are delighted with this vital model of senior living, thank them for having opted for this city and tell them from the heart that we consider them full Benidormenses. 4,628.84€ raised for DEBRA
The red carpet was rolled out for the XIII Butterfly Charity Ball at La Marina Resort to greet our guests in aid of DEBRA, this event was organised by Mary Chambers & Sue Rogers. The glittering annual event was attended by 164 guests enjoying a Poolside Cava reception. There was a surprise performance by The Costa Blanca Singers who were fabulous with their rendition of ¨Everybody needs Somebody¨ and many other songs which delighted our guests. This was followed by a 3 course meal in The La Marina Restaurant followed by top entertainment from Project Duo. Tommy Rogers our host, helped raise the amazing amount of 4,628.84€ with the main raffle prize of a Galaxy Samsung Tab A7 Lite won by Rosie Jolly. Many other prizes were won such as hampers, Premier Chef air fryer, Marina Senses Spa & Wellness vouchers and many vouchers donated by various local business and individual donators. Our auction allowed our guests to bid for vouchers including a stay at one of the three La Marina Camping & Resort sites, Sunset Beach Club, Benalmadena, and Rafaelhotels in Madrid. Throughout the evening we held a number of fundraising activities, 75€ won from Lucky Squares by Graham Chambers who donated his prize back to the charity, 100€ won from Heads & Tails by John Morgan and 375€ won from the Golden Butterfly by Leigh Humphries table. We also received a number of individual donations though out the evening. Roger Brierley from Mariposa Energia (Roger@mariposaenergia.es) kindly sponsored the fabulous Project Duo who created a great atmosphere. Kelly & David Goodsell from La Estacaión, La Marina kindly sponsored our table decorations for the event. Take A Trip To Fairytale Guadalest
The cooler months bring an opportunity to turn away from the Costa Blanca beaches and head inland. One of the most stunning places, Guadalest, belongs to the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain and is only about 30 minutes by car from Benidorm. This picturesque mountain village is like something out of a fairytale with its little cobbled streets and squares along with the incredible 11th century San José castle perched right on the mountaintop and the emblematic Alcozaiba Fortress tower, which is all that remains of this ancient monument. Both castles were built to protect the area and as a lookout for potential invaders. When you’ve completed the steep walk up to San José castle, you’ll see that it was perfectly placed to spot intruders - the views over the mountains and valleys are farreaching but may have been a bit of a distraction! From the village you can look down over the blue-green waters of Guadalest reservoir, which many say is one of the prettiest in Spain. For a tiny place - the population is around 200 residents - Guadalest crams in a lot of tourist attractions. As well as shops selling souvenirs and local produce, like olive oil, pottery and leather goods, there are a number of quaint, possibly unique, museums, such as one dedicated to around 20,000 examples of salt and pepper shakers. There are also museums displaying vintage cars, medieval instruments of torture, miniatures, art and history. Alicante combines a rich history with fabulous beaches and superb shops. Here are a few of the top sights to see in Alicante. Santa Bárbara Castle - The first port of call has to be this magnificent fortress sitting on top of Mount Benacantil, which has been guarding Alicante for around 1,000 years. Whilst enjoying breathtaking and far-reaching views of the city and its marina, you can discover more about its dramatic history. Explanada de España - This iconic promenade is made up of thousands of red, black and cream marble tiles designed to look like waves in the sea. There are plenty of bars and restaurants along here including the charming Kiosko Peret, which has been serving traditional ice-cream since 1923. Postiguet beach - Across the road from the kiosk is this splendid sandy beach whose golden sands and crystal-clear waters are perfect for sunbathing and swimming. San Nicolás de Bari Co-Cathedral - This blue-domed Baroque church is an artistic and architectural gem, whose interior is even more impressive than the exterior. The decorative interior is full of paintings and sculptures, as well as a beautiful chapel which is considered to be one of the finest examples of Spanish Baroque. MARQ and MACA museums - For an in-depth journey through history, the award-winning MARQ architectural museum is a must. You can wander through prehistoric times, through to the Iberian culture, Roman culture, the Middle Ages, and more modern times without leaving Alicante. Art-lovers will appreciate the MACA contemporary art museum, which is filled with masterpieces by renowned artists such as Picasso and Miró. Central Market - This bustling market is the place to buy regional specialities, such as turrón, and fresh local produce including seafood, fruit and vegetables.

Macmillans Coffee Morning at Jollys is once again a huge success
JOLLYS BAR would like to say a massive thank you to all that turned up and showed their support for this fantastic event, as well as the fundraising that has been ongoing throughout the year. With everything combined it has meant the current pot is over 8,400€ with a few sponsorships for the skydivers still to come in. A huge thank you goes out to all the local businesses and people who donated prizes, as well as everyone who dug deep in their pockets on the day itself and through the organised events such as the England v Rest of the World football match, music bingo, a fun poker night, race nights, a sponsored walk of the Camino de Santiago by Gillian and Tracy, and a sponsored sky dive. Top Musical Comes To Alicante Theatre
After touring the world with more than 5,000 performances and five million spectators, Peter The Musical comes to Alicante. The new production by Theater Properties, Atresmedia and Grupo Eventix uses the latest theatrical technology to recreate the magic of this legendary story. "A delight for the five senses”, according to The New York Times, this is a great opportunity to see a unique show with more than 30 artistes on stage. Grow a great plant, and help the planet. This amazing plant has many common names, but the most common is Spekboom, a South African name, and that's also the place where they have started using it in an amazing project to help our planet. The very special thing about Portulacaria Afra is that it can remove and store carbon from our atmosphere, and do it extremely well. Most plants take carbon from the air and give out oxygen, but this one can retain it. A hectare of these plants can remove over 10 tons of carbon in a year, that's a lot more than a similar area of the Amazon rain forest. There is another reason to grow these, they are lovely plants and easy to grow and look after. In Cape town you will find them used in salads, soups and much more, yes, they are edible too. They can also be used for making a Bonsai plant if you fancy trying that. Looking after one is easy, it's a succulent so only water every couple of weeks, they are happy with temperatures from 0 to 35 degrees and full sunshine is no problem. Cactus compost is ideal to grow them in and easily available. The only problems you are likely to have are from over watering, so watch out for that, and they aren't happy in shady place as a house plant. I wonder how much help a few million gardeners across the world would be if they grew one of these? Next month I'll show you how to propagate them so you can pass them on to your friends and carry on the good work. THE IMPACT OF NOT HAVING A SPANISH WILL ON YOUR SPOUSE AND FAMILY Many British Expats believe at least one of the following: • Their Will made in the UK covers their Spanish assets. • If they have no Will and are married with children, their spouse will inherit everything first. • A Spanish Will made before 2012 will still guarantee their wishes will be able to be adhered to. • If they are not married and have children, those children will automatically inherit everything In fact - EVERY ONE of the above statements is false. Let’s go through this step by step then: 1. A Will made in the UK is not able to deal with Spanish assets effectively. It would firstly need to be written containing a Brussels IV Regulation EU no 650/2012 succession clause stating that the law of either; England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man, or Guernsey and Jersey governs the succession of the testator’s estate and then, upon death, the Will would need to be translated into Spanish and be sent to have an apostille attached. It’s much simpler to arrange a notarised Spanish Will, written in both Spanish and English, containing a Brussels IV clause that will guarantee your wishes for your Spanish estate will be able to be carried out. 2. If you do not have an up-to-date Spanish Will in place and are married with children, your spouse will not inherit all of your estate under Spanish law. The way your estate will be divided is as follows: Your spouse would inherit a Life interest only (called an usufructo) in 1/3rd of your estate. The other 2/3rds will get divided equally between your children. The children then inherit the 1/3rd that your spouse had a life interest in when the surviving spouse dies.
Just having a life interest in 1/3rd of an estate is clearly not what the majority of married Expats want for their spouse after they die, which is why arranging a new Spanish Will choosing the law of your home nation to govern the succession of your estate and clearly setting out your wishes is so vitally important. 3. If you are not married and own a property jointly with a partner, that partner will NOT own the whole property when you die. Your half of the property would be inherited equally by any children or by any surviving parents if you had no children, and, if no surviving parents or children, then your siblings and/or your nephews and nieces would inherit your share of the property.
