The birth of our Solar System part 3 Here I am again with more surprises for you about our little corner of the Universe. In the last 2 parts I went on about how much has changed around us in the last 4.5 billion years, wandering planets, changing climates etc. This month I'm going to talk about what Jupiter has been up to whilst all that time has been passing. You probably know that Jupiter is the biggest of the planets, so big it's sometimes called (incorrectly) a failed star. If you are reading this in late September, you can see Jupiter without difficulty low down in the south west just after sunset. It's near a bright reddish star called Antares. Jupiter is the oldest of all our planets, so old it saw the birth of the Sun, and all the rest of the Solar System, also it's unlikely any of us would exist without it. I'd better explain that. As I've said before the Solar System hasn't always been like it is today, it's forever changing, never more so than in those early years before the inner planets formed. Because Jupiter is huge it has immense gravity which scoops up all the rock, gas and dust that gets near it. Now picture in that distant time Jupiter wandering inwards toward the Sun, it's gathering everything it can, all the stuff that would form the inner planets. Obviously, it didn't get everything, because Mars, Earth and Venus exist, what saved us was the planet Saturn. Not quite as big as Jupiter, it's still huge and its gravity was what pulled Jupiter back, eventually to settle where it is now. The chaos left behind is probably why Mars didn't get bigger and why Earth is just right for us. It also left the huge orbiting debris field called the Asteroid Belt, all the bits that never got together to make a planet. What else has the (Roman) Jupiter done for us? Well, it's protected the Earth and given hope for finding non Earthian life. Most people know that Earth has been hit by rocks from space tens of thousands of times in the past and will be hit many times more, but Jupiter's gravity has stopped or deflected many of those rocks from coming anywhere near us. It was even observed happening back in 1994 when comet Shoemaker – Levy was captured by gravity and plunged into Jupiter. Thank goodness for that. Now the best bit, Galileo was the first chap to comment about seeing Jupiter through a telescope, and a lot of trouble that landed him in. He also saw 4 of Jupiter's 79 moons, we call them the Galilean moons for obvious reasons. One of these moons, Europa has been fascinating astronomers for quite a while because it has a layer of water ice covering vast oceans of normal water. The hope is that there may be some form of simple life in those oceans, and what an incredible thing that would be. Kept from freezing by hydrothermal activity these oceans may have formed life in just the same way as life on Earth may have started. In 2023 NASA is launching a spacecraft to learn more about this amazing place, it hopes to fly through one of the occasional plumes of water vapour sent out into space and analyse what it gathers up. y Group We live in amazing times of discovery, whatever the politics on our little rock may bring us. Already into September and preparations have started for the kids going back to school and the commencement of their after school activities. Before we know it there will be Halloween parties being organised and the festive period will once again be upon us!!! We have had a lovely summer with many friends visiting and still have a few more yet to come, although we didn't quite get the opportunity to visit the many places of interest we would have liked to, as the weeks seem to fly by so quickly. Maybe with our next lot of friends we might find the time to venture a little further afield. As the summer seemed to take so long getting here, I am hoping we still have a couple of months left of the glorious weather, minus the humidity and heat waves please. The beach is always more appealing in September when there is more room and the feeling of being packed like sardines goes. Access and parking is easier and the queues in the bars and restaurants are more bearable. Congratulations to Rolf Gratved from Punta Prima who won last month's 50â‚Ź competition after spotting the logo on page 29. See if you can spot the logo in this issue for a chance to win 50â‚Ź, see inside for details of how to enter. Good luck!

Hi, I'm Maisie Garrett, a qualified Make-up Artist located in the Quesada area.

I have been interested in cosmetics ever since I was 5 years old! I decided to put myself on a professional make-up course in Alicante to become a qualified Make-up Artist because it's something I feel passionate about. Everyone wants to feel beautiful and I believe if you feel comfortable with yourself, you can enjoy every day life and have a positive outlook. Make-up doesn't always stop you from feeling a little self-conscious, it's what is inside that counts, but if you love make-up like I do, it's nice to experiment, put on your party dress, apply your favourite lipstick and mascara and have fun with friends! Make-up makes everything a little more colourful! It brings me such pleasure to make my clients feel special, everyone is different and it's my job to listen to you and find out what you want. Some clients just want pretty subtle colours, others want to make a bolder statement. It's your choice, it's all about you. If you want to look and feel amazing, book me as your Make-up Artist. I offer make-up for every occasion, Bride and Bridal party, Day and Evening, Lil Princesses, Sweet 16 and Eyes Only. Discounts may be offered for referring a friend and block bookings. I only use high end products that are cruelty free. For more information please contact: Mobile: 610 865 040. Instagram: @maisiemakeupx. Facebook: Professional Makeup by Maisie Garrett. 50% discount for September 2019 "Wow David, that IS good". (referring to his investment returns). "Somehow I had a feeling that the other investment wasn't performing well. I'm so pleased I found you in that magazine – I'd never read it before and your advert caught my attention, so here we are!!!!! Big Thanks David." Mr PB, Gran Alacant. The above is a genuine email I received from a client after sending him his valuation. This particular client invested with another local financial adviser firm in September 2014 and somehow not only had they ignored him, but they also managed to lose him money over a 4 year period. He has a SEB Spanish Portfolio Bond, is a balanced investor, and was extremely unhappy and wary about talking to a new advisor firm, however, he knew he wasn't being cared for by his existing firm. I took over the bond management at the end of March 2018, applied my accounting skills and financial adviser skills, arranged to sell his existing investments, constructed a new portfolio and had it in place by 11th April. He hasn’t looked back and he is very pleased, as you can see by his email. So here's my SEPTEMBER offer to you; If you have a bond that is not performing, or you have an advisor firm that is not being attentive, then give me a call. I normally charge a 2% take on fee but if you contact me during September 2019 I will charge you just 1% take-on fee, however, it costs nothing to give me a ring and talk through your unhappy situation and we can take it from there. Many of my clients are more than happy to give a testimonial direct to you, including the client quoted above. David Diggle C.A.T., DipFA of Blacktower Financial Management (International) Limited. Why it is essential all Energy Performance Certificates must be registered to market a property All Energy Performance Certificates must be registered to be legally valid in Spain. The registration process is carried out at the Regional Governments after paying a registration tax. This way the government can check that a property has had an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) issued, therefore rather than a knock on anyone's door requiring the document, they just search for any advertised property within their records of registered certificates. The reference used to identify a property is called the cadastral reference and is the same used in the property council tax (SUMA). In Valencia, the Decree 112/2009 regulates the registration process, and it is the owner of the property who is responsible for having the certificate registered. Martinez de la Casa undertakes the owner's responsibility to have the certificate registered and they complete the registration process within 72 hours sending the certificate. Everything is included within their fees of 121€, including IVA and the registration tax. If your solicitor or agents are studying your case, ask them to contact Martinez de la Casa Architects to provide them your registered Energy Performance Certificate and we will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper with our fixed published prices and guaranteed deadlines. The cost of an Energy Performance Certificate is 121€ IVA included and discounts are available if you also require Retrospective Licences for your pool (205€ IVA inc.) or/and extensions (302€ IVA inc) or Habitation Licence (from 118€ IVA included, Registration Tax not included) or any other of our services, done at the same time. If you want to have YOUR Energy Performance Certificate for your property Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment and guarantee the delivery of the EPC within 48 working hours after our survey. For all enquiries, or to arrange an appointment if you want to have your pool or extension certificate now and protect yourself against future law changes that may affect you, please call 665 810 411 or visit www.martinezdelacasa.com to see an impressive list of nearly 200 client's testimonials. “Antonio, from start to finish it was utter professionalism. You kept in touch and submitted the finished product at the time you stated. A good deal of Spanish firms could take a lesson from your customer service approach”. Roger Bates.

Do I need a Spanish will? It's a subject that no-one likes talking about – but it is a conversation that everyone needs to have. Have you got your affairs in order if anything should happen to you? Estimates vary, but it is generally agreed that around two thirds of British people do not have a will. And if a British national who owns assets in Spain dies without a will, matters can – and do - become rather complicated. The Spanish legal system is very different when it comes to the inheritance procedure compared to other countries like the UK. It is also worth noting that Spanish inheritance law also varies from region to region. Legal experts at Sun Lawyers, a Spanish law firm with more than 30 years of experience and several offices across the Costa Blanca, say that makes it vital to get the right advice. Its spokesman says: "You really must have a Spanish will if you have property or any other assets over here. We recently got a letter from a gentleman about the sad story of his wife passing away and she had not made a Spanish will involving her property in this country. That has sadly seen extra stress for him at a time when he does not need it, and it has also cost him thousands of euros to sort everything out". Having a Spanish will ensures that the inheritance procedure is straightforward and less costly. EU citizens living in Spain, as well as several non-EU countries, can now choose whether the law of their home country or their country of residence applies. If a foreign resident dies without leaving a will or making an official declaration on which law they wish to apply, the law of the country where they resided for the last five years will apply. If your estate is dealt with under Spanish inheritance law, forced heirship rules apply - known as the Law of Obligatory Heirs in Spain. This means there are restrictions on how you distribute your estate, as a specific percentage needs to be set aside for certain relatives. If you die without leaving a Spanish will, the laws of intestate succession apply. In Spanish succession law, this means that the estate will be inherited by the following - considering the Law of Obligatory Heirs: • children of the deceased • if there are no children, the parents • if no children or parents, the surviving spouse • if there are none of these, then the next closest blood relatives (up to a fourth-grade limit in the family tree) • if there are no legal beneficiaries from any of these groups, then the Spanish state inherits the estate! Making a Spanish will can also help sort out what levels of inheritance tax are likely to be paid. The rules and Spanish inheritance tax rates vary according to the relationship between the donor and beneficiary, although generally unmarried couples and stepchildren pay more tax than spouses and natural children. Our client, Andrew, moved to Spain from London in 2016. As a high-earning lawyer in Spain, he became an easy target for unsolicited sales calls. One financial salesperson offered to meet him and chat about his investment options. “You need to take full advantage of your tax-free salary and cash in on Brexit. Transferring your savings into an offshore bond is the best decision.” Andrew was won over. He withdrew his £600,000 pension and invested it into the offshore bond recommended by the salesperson. However, his investment hadn’t grown in two years – despite a raging bull market. Seeking our help, we scrutinised his investment. The results were shocking… An eye-watering 11% (£66,000) commission was paid to his adviser the day he transferred his money. He was further charged: Establishment fee 1.83% pa for five years OCF of funds 2.32% (AMC 1.75%) Portfolio management/advice fee 1% pa Admin charge £428 per annum (0.07% on £600,000) Transaction charge £25 x 10 Total = circa 5.2%+ pa It gets worse. If he withdrew his funds within the initial charging period of 10 years, exit penalties would apply. Andrew is one of many expats who moved to a new country with hopes of making the most of a new life and a relaxing retirement. However, international financial services are often not what they are ‘back home’. Hidden fees and commissions can devastate returns, leaving expat investors with far less saved than they’d hoped for. Aesthetic Breast Surgery is the most in demand for Women and Men in Spain Breast surgery for women, and gynaecomastia surgery for men, are the two most popular aesthetic interventions for the population. Every year, over 18,000 patients in Spain undergo mammoplasty, followed far behind by liposuction, blepharoplasty or eyelid correction, rhinoplasty and abdominoplasty. In light of this information, Doctor José Salvador, Head of the Plastic Surgery Service at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja, explains that, “The breast area is the one that can generate the most self-esteem conflicts, for men as well as for women. In second place, we have protruding ear surgery for men, and eyelid surgery for both genders”.

“While the goal of gynaecomastia surgery is to eliminate the increased mammary volume that often appears in males during their youth (due to hormonal problems) or as adults (due to excessive fat deposits on the mammary area), a mammoplasty seeks to increase the size of the breasts in women, whether it is a simple enlargement or due to a need to lift the breasts and remodel their shape after pregnancies and breastfeeding,” states Doctor Salvador. As for the age bracket that submits to the greatest amount of these interventions, the surgeon says that they are between eighteen and twenty-five years old, “though there is also a second peak in a more mature age bracket, between forty and fifty years of age.” The increase in this type of intervention is due to body worship and the safety of the interventions. “Body worship, the need to look good, and the ease of going to clinics staffed with excellent plastic and aesthetic surgery professionals have led to steadily increasing demand for these surgeries, which will be more and more in demand,” clarifies the surgeon.

This excellence, as well as the incorporation of innovative technology performed by some hospital centres, has made Alicante one of the favourite destinations of patients from other countries for the performance of plastic and aesthetic surgical interventions. “The choice of Alicante is based on the fact that it is a well-known city in Europe, where plastic surgery with a high degree of professionalism is available, and because its climate and attractive beaches create an opportunity to mix surgery with leisure,” according to Doctor Salvador. Quirónsalud in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia Centro Médico Quirónsalud Alicante joins seven centres in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia to become part of a leading group that is at the cutting edge of medicine. We believe in a healthcare attention model, where people are at the centre, and which, from this moment, Quirónsalud places at the disposal of all the people of Alicante, to offer them the best care for their health. Hi All. Well, this month I'm delighted to be featuring a new and exciting duo. "People's People" was formed only 3 months ago by Peter "Chippy" Fryer and Terry Luckett. These names may already be familiar to you, as both of these musicians have played in local bands Karma and Slyder. Both still play in Slyder. Allow me to introduce you to this amiable duo. Terry "the Rocket" Luckett, prior to moving to Spain, was based in the Midlands area of the U.K. He was very well known having played in Jaded, Rock Machine and Thunder, the Tribute band. Thunder played to huge crowds in major venues, the length and breadth of Britain. Terry's influences are heavy based rock. Chippy Fryer was initially a Military Musician, having studied tuba, double bass and bass guitar at Knellar Hall, the Military School of Music. He also plays keyboards. Chippy played in orchestras in the London area for many years, backing top class artistes. The experience that he gained during this time proved invaluable when he relocated to Jersey in the Channel Islands. There he immediately began working in Cabaret and Shows, and Pop & Rock bands, also backing "Household Name" Artistes.

QF Focus Magazine After having both settled in Spain, Terry and Chippy soon became active on the local music scene. But, as most of the band work was mainly performing at weekends, they found themselves "kicking their heels" during the week, with spare time on their hands. So they decided to put a duo together, and People's People was born. Their repertoire covers songs from the 1970s to present day. Numbers from the heavy rock bands to 1980s synth pop, as well as adding favourite dance numbers to their set. Terry expertly handles the most demanding of guitar classics, with spectacular solos unleashed to the audience. Even the most discerning guitarists are amazed by his expert hand, delivering great songs from Gary Moore and Joe Bonamassa, to the rock anthems we all like. Chippy provides fantastic backing on keyboards to these guitar classics and ballads, and compliments it with his vocals, to complete what is a great sound. They also like to perform 1980s synth pop, from the likes of Depeche Mode, Simple Minds and Human League, to mention a few. Chippy also uses "loopers", both on keyboard and vocals effects, to produce harmonies which both fill, and give a rich vibrant sound. People's People are based in Quesada, but play all along the coast. They recently performed in El Raso to a capacity crowd, and were well received with good positive feedback. You can find People's People Facebook page, which will give more information and dates of future engagements. Or alternatively, keep an eye on the local Bye for now, D.P. press.

Quesada Bowls Club Report

Sponsored by

by Dee Stephenson

We may have had scorching temperatures but that didn’t stop the bowlers putting every effort into the Quesada-Greenlands Friendly Competition last month! It proved to be a very successful and enjoyable series of matches against our near neighbours, Greenlands. After the 4 evening matches, Quesada was the overall winner with a cumulative shots difference of +64. There was a good turnout at the post match meal held at The Club, which was a nice way to round off the matches. For the record, Quesada have now won these friendlies for the last 6 years. This year we almost doubled our previous cumulative figure and out of all the games played over the last 4 weeks, Quesada won 14, drew 2 and lost 7. Considering the extreme temperatures we all had to endure, it just goes to show what the body can endure when we put our mind to it (or is the phrase 'mad dogs and Englishmen' more appropriate). Thanks to all of the players from both teams for making it such an enjoyable event. Don’t forget we still have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive running. It’s open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard on newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk.

Book Review by Ivor Kindle

Title: Long Time Coming Author: Robert Goddard Publisher: Corgi Books. It's war time in Europe and the Irish Republic is trying to remain Neutral in the War between Britain and Germany. Eldritch Swan gets caught up in a British spy plot to monitor the diplomatic efforts of the Germans to encourage the Irish to enter the war on the German side. Eldritch is compromised and spends 36 years in an Irish prison as a result. In the middle of the 1970s Eldritch appears at his nephews house and requests help from his nephew Stephen. Eldritch refuses to tell Stephen why he was imprisoned and why he has suddenly been released. The plot unravels and oscillates between war torn Europe of the 1940s and Europe of the 1970s. Espionage, diamond smuggling, fraud and political intrigue make this Robert Goddard thriller a first class read. Goddard has a unique English writing style, being both graphic and descriptive whilst also easy on the eye of the reader.

A View From

The Top

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up. The Repair Shop.

&

Sitting in the house around tea time, 5pm to 7pm for the British readers ...dog sitting as ‘Er Indoors was out shopping with her friend Petra. Normally at around this time I am having a couple of pints of foaming ale with my mates at our local drinking hole discussing the World and its woes. However, on this occasion as I am house bound, I decided to see what was on the television ...flicking through the Channels

QF Focus Magazine BBC 1, 2 ...ITV 1, 2 etc I came across a programme called "The Repair Shop" on BBC 2. Now The Repair Shop is a programme where people can take their valued family heirlooms to hopefully be restored and repaired by one of a number of mechanical, antique, furniture and artwork experts. The Repair Shop is situated in a converted barn at "The Weald and Downland living Museum" at Singleton in West Sussex. The people who take their worn out and sometime damaged items for repair all have a story to tell about their particular item ...My Grandad’s Grandad used to sit on that chair of an evening said one participant ...my Mother used to always cuddle this particular teddy bear when she was a little girl said another bringer of what looked to be a teddy bear in name only as it (the bear) was in a box and was in several pieces. All manner of heirlooms are repaired and restored using a range of skills that are both creative and time consuming. I was fascinated to watch as two restoration experts fussed and fiddled and brushed and glued and lovingly put the mentioned teddy bear back together again ...new hair ...new eyes and a nice new furry coat. Oh what I would do for some of that restorative genius to be applied to my worn out body. Another item was the Grandad’s chair that had most certainly seen better days ...the leather was wafer thin ...the chair legs were weak and wobbly (just like mine) and the seat was also like mine being out of shape and needing some firm padding. The experts got to grips with the leather ...the wobbly legs were re-glued and the padding now looks like it has done several miles on one of those bum firming machines. The faces of the people who come to pick up their heirlooms show genuine surprise at the results set before them ...the skill level of the restoration experts is nothing short of wonderful to behold as they tinker and fiddle and screw and burnish using tools that in some instances I have never seen before. What is really good about the programme is that it leaves the viewer as well as the participants with a real sense of a "job well done" ...a relaxing entertaining and interesting example of what good television can be.

They are Taking the Pee.

Driving into Torrevieja the other day I passed a man standing on the side of the road next to a grass verge and he was in the process of having a pee ...he had turned away from the oncoming traffic so at least some modicum of modesty was preserved. This act of public relief was not the first time in my time living in Spain that I have witnessed such a public display of relieving oneself. Indeed, as I got to thinking my thoughts turned to an incident on a London bus many years ago when myself and my eldest son were travelling from A to B and he, my son, suddenly said ‘Dad I need a pee’. My reply was ‘You will have to hold on son as we have not got far to go.’ ...Ten minutes later stuck in the London traffic my son is crossing his legs and asking how much longer he has to wait ..the traffic does not move so we alight the bus in an attempt to find a public toilet ...do you remember them Dear Reader ...public toilets were once fairly commonplace amongst the facilities provided in most large cities and towns. Anyway, after twenty minutes or so searching for a public loo we gave up the ghost and the boy had a pee behind a fence on some waste ground. On reflection I got to thinking where have all the public toilets gone? My thinking and research tells me that in Britain over the last 10 years some 1782 public toilets have been closed due to lack of funds being made available to keep them open. This begs the question where do people go to relieve themselves? It also begs the question about the criminalisation of us the general public as "The Nuisance and Behaviour in Public places by-law" states the persons are not allowed to urinate in a public place except in facilities provided for this function ...it’s a catch 22 directed at one of our bodily functions ...to pee or not to pee is not the question? The directive is - you shalt not pee under pain of arrest. What has happened to civilised society? Give us our scent bottles back ...not only were they places of human relief, in some instances as in the scent bottle in Horseferry road in Westminster, they were places of architectural heritage.

Windrush Two on the Horizon.

Just seen the latest dictat from the dysfunctional British Home Office in respect of European citizens who live in the UK... Immediately after the no deal Brexit date of October 2019 if no deal occurs then from the very next day EU citizens will not be welcome in the UK unless they gain access via some as yet thought out Australian style points system. The government say that existing EU citizens living in the UK will be OK as long as they have or are going through the current registration system ...Remind me, was it in 1953 that Britain took in West Indian citizens to help with the rebuilding of the British state after the War with the promise of leave to stay in Britain, and was it not only a few years ago that yet another useless Tory Home Secretary managed to forget all about that promise and throw out of their homes and jobs the very people they said could stay? If you or I Dear Reader were as incompetent as the present Government we would not have lasted a minute in our former jobs ...The sh*t is about to hit the fan in a big way ...my worry is if the British do it, maybe, just maybe the Europeans will say enough is enough.

Forthcoming Events By Keith Nicol All information is correct at time of going to press but we advise you check for any changes which are beyond our control. Summer has just about come and gone, The Vuelta Tour of Spain started in Torrevieja, we've had a hot, hot summer, and up next are Halloween and then, believe it or not, it's Christmas. But don't worry, you still have time to enjoy the hot weather and get out there and enjoy yourselves for another week or four. Plus, one has a much better chance of getting one's car parked on the main streets! One of Torrevieja's newest and most popular attractions is a tour to the iconic Salt works. Here you can discover much more about what makes Torrevieja one of the major producers of salt in Europe. These 50 minute excursions to the pyramids of salt that are produced by the local industry, take place on one of the Tourist Trains. You can board the Tourist Train on Avenida de la Libertad, in front of Torrevieja's Waterfall feature, with the excursions taking place every two hours, on the even hours, from 10am to 8pm. The visit costs 6.95€ for adults and 5.95€ for pensioners and children aged between 2 and 12.

Some of the other fun experiences offered in Torrevieja, apart from the usual Sun, Sea and Sangria. If you are romantic, you can enjoy a unique sunset from different parts of the town. One of these places is the La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park, near to the La Mata Interpretation Centre. The Vía Verde, near to La Siesta urbanization offers another unforgettable view. And of course, the sunset from our Cala Ferris (Ferris cove) in the area of Las Calas, equipped for public use, will leave you with an everlasting image. You could start the day with a gentle bike ride. A good starting point would be the Vía Verde, around 10am is a great time. It takes about 40 minutes to reach the recreational area of the Natural Park. Now will be time for lunch under the shade of the magnificent eucalyptus trees in an area perfectly equipped for this. At around 1pm you can re-start your ride. Head towards La Mata, going under the N-332 motorway. By doing this you will connect with the coast, where you can have a well-deserved dip, weather permitting. You will find a wide range of activities around Torrevieja to complement your stay and what’s more, only a few minutes away. In the same Bajo Segura region you can discover lots of towns with a rich historical heritage. Likewise, less than an hour away, there are beautiful cities such as Alicante, with all the tourist attractions expected of a provincial capital, or the Terra Mítica theme park, less than one hour away, with state-of-the-art rides for the whole

Torrevieja’s floating museums are made up of three ships of different origins. On the one hand we have the S-61 Delfín Submarine and the Albatross III Customs Surveillance Patrol Boat. The S-61 was the Spanish Navy's first ship which was converted into a floating museum, specifically for the town that gave it its combat flag in 1971. The Albatross III Patrol Boat belonged to the Customs Surveillance Service until the 23rd of March 2006,

QF Focus Magazine when it became Torrevieja's second floating museum. And lastly, the “Pascual Flores” schooner, a reconstruction of the original ship used by the sailors of Torrevieja to sell their prized salt. The Delfin submarine is based in Torrevieja’s main harbour, close to the fairground and has received over 1,500,000 visits since it was inaugurated. From 31st August to 18th December it's open every day except Monday, from 10am to 2pm. Entrance costs 2€ and visitors must be at least a minimum height to enter and visit the submarine: of 1.15 metres.

Shimano Cycling Components Established in February 1921 by Shozaburo Shimano in Sakai City Japan to produce free wheels for bicycles all by himself, within a few years he had expanded greatly and by 1940 was employing over 300 people. Sakai City was a legendary blacksmith centre well known for making swords and gun barrels. Now in 2019 Shimano is the world’s largest multinational manufacturer of bicycle components with 75% of the world market (leaving America’s S-ram, Suntour and Italy’s Campagnola to share the remaining 25%) and now employing over 12000 people worldwide. They not only make cycling components but also make fishing tackle and rowing equipment and also made golf supplies and Snowboard gear until 2008. Shimano’s market place domination in the 90s was based on the fact that Shimano became oriented towards integrating all of their components with each other, with the result being that if any Shimano components were to be used, then the entire bike would need to be built from matching Shimano components. The alternative perspective is that by controlling the mix of components on the bicycle, a manufacturer such as Shimano can control how well their own products function. Shimano’s competitors, Campagnola, S-ram and Sunrace also make proprietary designs that limit the opportunity to mix and match componentry. However, in 2007 Shimano decided to move back to making separate braking and shifting components fully available in addition to dual control components, a move to satisfy riders that wished to use Shimano shifting with other brands of disc brakes. Shimano now make all parts / components for bicycles as well as many accessories and clothing. In early May Harry and I travelled up to Madrid on the high speed train to participate in our annual Shimano Technicians training course organised by Macario Spain, who are the main dealers in Spain for Shimano products. This year’s course was all about the Shimano Steps e-bike system. The day started very early, so we had to travel up the night before and stay in a hotel. On arrival at Macario’s huge warehouse we were greeted by the Shimano team with coffee and cakes and then it was straight to the classroom to get stuck in. We were each given a Shimano Steps E-Bike engine and shown how to strip and rebuild it. After an excellent lunch at a local tapas bar we went on to program and tune the E-bikes using our laptops and mobile phones. The Shimano technology nowadays is excellent and we now each have access to Shimano’s training centre where we can access information and videos on all Shimano products including stripping and assembling. This information package is only available to qualified Shimano technicians where we can also sit courses online for further Shimano accreditation. Unfortunately, the day came to an end, we said our farewells and we made our way back to the train station to catch our return train to Alicante and arrived home at midnight. Great day. Team “Cyclogical” meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 5.30pm and Sunday mornings at 8am and cover between 90 and 120kms at a moderate to fast pace so, if you fancy a challenge, are looking to improve your fitness, riding ability and speed and also have a new group of friends to socialise and train with then why not come along and give it a try or call Gary on 637 487 377.
