On a number of occasions, I have extolled the virtues of Liberty’s fully comprehensive house policy. When asking the right questions, you will discover that many house insurance policies are inadequate. You do need to read the small print on your house policy, including checking that you have the correct policy with Liberty Seguros. Years ago, when I first started, Liberty did not offer a house policy as they were studying the British policies to discover what we, as Expats, were used to. What they offer today is the best but only if you have the updated version. There will be a number of people, that for various reasons, have stayed with their original policy, although the staff in my Renewals Department ask if you would like to know the advantages of upgrading. The other very important issue when discussing house insurance is the amount of contents cover, always remembering that with Spanish Home insurance the kitchen is included in the contents, not the buildings. Also there is a wonderful extra you can add to your policy and that is accidental damage, which is unique to Liberty Seguros and covers many breakages and claims within the home. Therefore can I please ask you all to double check the coverage of your home policies, whether you are with Jennifer Cunningham Insurance and Liberty, or another company, to understand the cover you actually have. Finding out you have the incorrect and insufficient coverage when you want to make a claim is far too late. My ladies are currently working on assessing the home policies, and if they feel you would benefit with increased, additional coverage, they will contact you. In the meantime, if you have any concerns or questions, please contact one of my offices and we will be able to give you the advice you require and answer any questions. Just remember that your property is probably your most expensive asset, but also your home, which of course, needs the right protection.

If you require any further information or a quotation, please contact one of my offices, email info@jennifercunningham.net or visit the website www.jennifercunningham.net.

There has been a lot more activity over the past few weeks and it looks like we will be in for a bumper summer season this year which will be a huge welcome to all the businesses in the area as many have suffered over the past few years and need the boost that holidaymakers and homeowners bring.

This is all likely to start this month with the confirmation of the St Patrick's Day parade at Cabo Roig going ahead, which is always such a popular event bringing many nationalities together. Following that we have Mothering Sunday on 27th March and then a few weeks later Easter will be here. I can see a bit of overindulgence happening in all aspects in the coming months! We are always interested in supporting any charity events so if you have an event you would like to get out there then please contact myself or the office by email or on telephone numbers below. Until next time.

Living, Breathing Vertical Garden in Benidorm

Benidorm has turned a concrete wall at the town hall into a colourful 98-metre-square vertical garden filled with 3,000 Mediterranean plants. Not only does the living wall make the area more attractive, but it is also good for the environment by combating the effects of greenhouse gases and producing oxygen for 90 people a year. This natural ecosystem has been installed on a concrete wall of Benidorm council’s main building with Mediterranean plants such as aromatic plants, grasses, lichen and moss. “They will grow and give colour in addition to forming a picture that has been made with the different varieties,” said José Ramón González de Zárate, Benidorm’s councillor for public spaces.

What is a vertical garden? Vertical gardening creates a green wall to grow flowers, fruit or vegetables. Instead of needing a lot of ground space for plants, you can grow upwards on a wall. Although it is trendy now, particularly in urban areas, it is not such a new idea. The first vertical garden is believed to be The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The hanging gardens of Benidorm have been created using carefully selected plants which will survive in the town’s climate. The wall will be both environmentally-friendly and attractive to see. The vertical garden serves as a test for a more ambitious project that Benidorm council has in mind to improve the urban environment and combat the effects of climate change. I'm not using any numbers or mathematics today.

T

he financial markets' indexes have decreased in the last 3 weeks (this article is being written in February). Of course the older I get, the more market cycles I live through to gain even more experience.

These market “upsets” cause some investors to get nervous and sell off, and others, like myself to invest even more [of my] capital. I don't pick individual stocks and shares any more because I have been too busy to sit in front of screens showing live market feeds, but I still choose funds and fund managers who I know will be able to take advantage of the next market “upset” to get invested into the right stocks and therefore positions that will raise a few percentage returns over the next couple of quarters or beyond. Of course, the way investments are packaged to avoid Income tax, Capital gain tax or Inheritance tax is of major importance and this can be more effective on your wealth than the investment performances themselves. It's important to note that none of the investments we recommend are held in Spain. They never have been and frankly, I can't see that fact changing during my remaining working life. So, despite an increase in UK interest rates to 0.5%, inflation for both the UK and Europe is set to increase significantly on top of the inflationary prices that have already occurred. Some of the those goods and services are available for investment, so if you jump on the band wagon with me, you will certainly outstrip bank interest returns.

If you are a first time or very cautious investor – do NOT worry, I have a product that will most likely suit you. If you want a better return on your money all you have to do is call me, email me or call into our Seagate Wealth Management office and ask for me. It's that simple. And don't mention the fact I ended up using a number in this article! Please call me for information on various investment solutions for your circumstances (minimum £20,000/€25,000) or about pension transfers to enable flexible access (take what you want when you want rather than being drip-fed your own money). Fiery Las Fallas Fiesta In March

The explosive Fallas fiesta returns to the Valencia region after a two-year absence. The exciting programme has been designed to be equal to the fiestas before the pandemic. There will be parades, flower offerings, music, fireworks and Ninots put up in the streets to be burnt on the final night to commemorate St Joseph. The best place to see the Fallas fiesta is in Valencia. For a whole week, the city becomes an enormous open-air gallery with around 700 gigantic statues handcrafted by local artisans along with marching bands and the sounds of gunpowder explosions. From March 1, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in Valencia is the scene of the almighty Mascletà. At 2pm each day, specialist pyrotechnicians produce the Mascletà when around 100 kilos of gunpowder explode to create a symphony of sounds filling the entire city with music. Later in the month, the Fallas will be 'planted' in the streets where these satirical statues stand for just a few days before the Cremà, when the magnificent works of art are set alight on the evening of March 19. Specialist Fallas artists spend the year making moulds, shaping the statues and painting them, only to watch them be burnt to a cinder on St Joseph's Day. The largest statues can cost more than 200.000€ to produce. As with many traditions, Fallas has evolved over time to become a major tourist attraction. Its roots lie in the Middle Ages when carpenters used planks of wood as candleholders in the winter. To celebrate the arrival of spring, they would burn the wood. Over time, the wood was dressed in clothes to look like a person. These carvings became more and more elaborate until the wondrous Fallas fiesta evolved. Fallas is also celebrated in other towns in the Valencia community including Gandia, Dénia and Benidorm. Article by Sarah Farrell - www.sarahswritestuff.com

Why it is essential all Energy Performance Certificates must be registered to market a property All Energy Performance Certificates must be registered to be legally valid in Spain. The registration process is carried out at the Regional Governments after paying a registration tax. This way the government can check that a property has had an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) issued, therefore rather than a knock on anyone's door requiring the document, they just search for any advertised property within their records of registered certificates. The reference used to identify a property is called the cadastral reference and is the same used in the property council tax (SUMA). In Valencia, the Decree 112/2009 regulates the registration process, and it is the owner of the property who is responsible for having the certificate registered. Martinez de la Casa undertakes the owner's responsibility to have the certificate registered and they complete the registration process within 72 hours sending the certificate. Everything is included within their fees of 121€, including IVA and the registration tax. If your solicitor or agents are studying your case, ask them to contact Martinez de la Casa Architects to provide them your registered Energy Performance Certificate and we will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper with our fixed published prices and guaranteed deadlines. The cost of an Energy Performance Certificate is 121€ IVA included and discounts are available if you also require Retrospective Licences for your pool (205€ IVA inc.) or/and extensions (302€ IVA inc) or Habitation Licence (from 118€ IVA included, Registration Tax not included) or any other of our services, done at the same time. If you want to have YOUR Energy Performance Certificate for your property Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment and guarantee the delivery of the EPC within 48 working hours after our survey. For all enquiries, or to arrange an appointment if you want to have your pool or extension certificate now and protect yourself against future law changes that may affect you, please call 665 810 411 or visit www.martinezdelacasa.com to see an impressive list of nearly 200 client's testimonials. “Antonio, from start to finish it was utter professionalism. You kept in touch and submitted the finished product at the time you stated. A good deal of Spanish firms could take a lesson from your customer service approach”. Roger Bates.

Book Review by Ivor Kindle

Title: The Papal Decree

Author: Luis Miguel Rocha Publisher: Penguin The Catholic church has a secret that it must keep to secure the future of the church itself. Several Popes have made a promise to keep secret scrolls, found in Qumran, that purport to say that Jesus was not crucified and in fact lived in Rome for several years longer than the Bible would have the World believe. Popes, Cardinals, Jesuits and even the CIA supported by a journalist, get involved when a plot is discovered to announce and show the scrolls to the world and shatter the history of the Catholic church. This book is a somewhat convoluted read. I suspect that the translation from the original Portuguese has left something to be desired. That said the story, once you get into the multitude of characters, is a good read.

Keep reading, Ivor Kindle.

Cruz Azul FUNdraiser a Huge Success

www.femalefocusonline.com

Cruz Azul Murcia’s recent event at Le Petit Bistrot in Los Alcázares raised an amazing 784€!

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of local businesses, and the public, during what are still tough times for everyone” said Cruz Azul President, Lyn Baines. Organised by the owners of Le Petit Bistrot, Anne and Grainne, and aided by Jilly and Marsha, prizes were donated by customers, friends, and local businesses such as - Pearl’s Plaice - Rocco’s The Post Room - The Penny Farthing - Tipsy Thistle – Boochies - Something Special - No. 6 by Genoa - Fun & Games African Adventure - Alexandra’s Hair & Nails. Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus entertained supporters during the intervals and many enjoyed Grainne’s famous Irish Stew. Back in May 2013, Spain was suffering a deep financial crisis, with people losing their jobs and their homes. This led to an increase in abandoned pets because people could not afford vet fees if their pets needed treatment. This was the catalyst for Lyn Baines and Sue Thomason to do something about that, so they created Cruz Azul Murcia to help pet owners on low incomes with vet fees in order they continued to care for their animals. The aim is to promote responsible pet ownership. Cruz Azul has since expanded into other areas, such as managing cat colonies and emergency treatment for injured and abandoned animals. Cruz Azul work closely with a cat charity in Torre Pacheco and another in Sucina. Both are doing some remarkable work to keep down the cat population in a manageable way. The Sucina project is a prime example to show that trapping, neutering and returning the cats does work. They started seven years ago, against considerable opposition, but their perseverance has really

paid off; they haven’t had any new kittens or cats for 18 months and everyone in the village is now on board with the scheme. Cruz Azul opened their donation centre in San Javier to help raise funds to support the work they do and they are ever-grateful to the small band of volunteers, headed up by Lesley Taylor, who work tirelessly to ensure a pleasant shopping experience for all of their customers and to everyone who donates goods to sell. Sadly, Cruz Azul lost a founder member, Sue Thomason, in July 2017, but they know that she would be very proud of them. Cruz Azul is planning another fundraiser at the Tataki Restaurant in Los Alcázares on Monday, 28 March - a ‘Quiz & Curry’ from 2.30 pm. Places are limited, so email info@cruzazulmurcia.com if you would like to reserve tickets. Cruz Azul Murcia is a registered charity (No. 11.720/1a) and exists to provide veterinary care for the sick and injured pets of people in need and to promote responsible pet ownership. If you or someone you know needs help, or you would like to volunteer or donate, please call 693 017 616 or visit their website: www.cruzazulmurcia.com The photograph shows the cheque presentation at Le Petit Bistrot. Who is buying property on the Costa Blanca?

Page 13

QFocus Magazine March 2022

Nearly one out of two second homes sold on the Costa Blanca is being snapped up by people from Madrid, while British and Belgian buyers are the dominant forces from overseas. Madrilenos bought 2,097 properties in the Alicante province between January and September last year, according to government figures. That is 50% up on 2020, although it should be taken into account that this period coincides with the months of confinement due to Covid-19. Last year, residents from Madrid bought nearly the same number of houses in Alicante province as British buyers who bought 2,101 homes. Belgian buyers acquired 1,547 homes, the Swiss bought 1,269 and 1,108 were sold to Germans. The pandemic has played its part in the change in the population on the Costa Blanca. Many people living in large cities, such as Madrid, have decided to take up residence - full or part-time - in areas where they can enjoy a better quality of life away from the stress of city living. The pandemic also saw a sharp rise in home working and many people are now looking at teleworking on a more permanent basis, so they can live in a convivial area. Other people are eyeing Alicante properties as a long-term investment for retirement. Alicante city remains a favourite destination for Madrilenos, who are particularly drawn to the areas around Alicante Golf and San Juan beach as well as flats in the city centre. Guardamar and Santa Pola are other towns benefitting from the demand from Madrilenos. However, buyers from the Basque country and northern Spain in general usually settle in and around Benidorm, figures show. The age of property buyers is falling with more young couples and single people looking to buy apartments in Alicante province.

COLL d’ARES - Path of Retreat STANDING ON A SUMMERS DAY, TRULY HUMBLED, WHAT WOULD IT HAVE BEEN LIKE IN THE WINTER OF 1939? Exhausted people, toiling up a steep hill, wearing thread bare clothes, pain etched on their faces, carrying worldly possessions in a sack on their back, escaping the ravages of the Civil War, in hope of a new life in France. There were many ‘Cami’s de la Retirada’ in Spain. At least three converged at the Coll d'Ares, a border crossing into France. Can Planes is an old Spanish farmhouse set in the foothills of the Eastern Pyrenees. A magnifying glass and a large-scale map locate it halfway between Rocabruna and Beget, close to the French/Spanish border. By car try Barcelona, Vic, Ripol, Camprodon and then Rocabruna. It is an extraordinary place accessed by a good forest track of about 1000 metres. The house is surrounded by green meadows and lush forests while the GR-11 walking track snakes out front on its way from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. This is the route to the Coll. On a visit to the Coll d'Ares on the Spanish/ French border the first noticeable thing was a cold wind belting over the Coll at such a speed it was impossible to stand upright. A building, obviously an old customs post, now turned into a cafe full of nothing much, stood there. Inside there was a line on the floor, one side France and the other Spain, the curt proprietor speaking an appropriate language where a customer stood. Everyone fell for his party trick when standing on the line. ‘International’ comes his reply. A laconic smile was the correct thing to do before ordering coffees, tostadas, and croissants in an appropriate language. He smiled back wearily. Outside a sign ‘Cami de la Retirada’ (Path of Retreat) sat alongside an EU notice with a brief description. ‘The border crossing of El Coll d'Ares, located between Mollo in Spain and Prats de Mollo in France was one of the most used by Republicans fleeing Spain at the end of the Civil War. It is estimated that between mid-January and mid-March 1939, 100,000 men, women and children crossed the Ares Coll.’ Dressed for cold and wind with anoraks, hats and gloves, history is touched by walking down the Path of Retreat back to Rocabruna then to Can Planes. It’s a broad path, sometimes rutted, with wildflowers either side, weaving its way over unkempt green hillsides, through small woods surrounded by rusty barbed wire. The route passes an old chicken shed, an old farmhouse and finally a new building with horses; but little else. This was solitude in the green Pyrenees, on a respectful, silent path full of memory for those who also walked here, many perishing on the way. ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER RETURN TO THE COLL TO WALK DOWN ANOTHER REFUGEE PATH to Mollo near Camprodon. This was altogether different terrain. A long hike along the grassy border distinctly marked with barbed wire and grazing sheep. Choose France or Spain from a signpost, then down to Espinavell, leaving behind an isolated expanse of green grass and a feeling of being able to touch the clouds at their lowest point. The thin thread path wound its way down from on high, passing a small river, a valley and two bridges. The narrow and steep alleys of Espinavell remained silent, the natural stone houses folding neatly into the contours of the hillside. Mollo was reached under a blue sky, high hot sun, to be greeted at a bar to cider, black pudding, eggs, and chips. Alas no French celebrity chef worked here. Coll d’Ares, Girona. Drink driving regulations in Spain

Did you know that the breath alcohol limit in Spain is lower than in the UK? Spain; 0,25mg/l - UK; 0,35 mg/l It’s impossible to say exactly how many drinks this equals. It’s different for each person. The way alcohol affects you depends on: - Your weight, age, sex, and metabolism (the rate your body uses energy) - The type and amount of alcohol you’re drinking - What you’ve eaten recently - Your stress levels at the time Remember that Spain applies a points system to Spanish driving licences. Depending on the result you will get one of these penalties; - If the result of the test is between 0,25 and 0,50 mg/l. You will face a 500€ fine and a loss of 4 points. - If the result of the test is over 0,50 mg/l, you will face a 1000€ fine and a loss of 6 points. - If the result of the test is over 0,60 mg/l, you will have committed a criminal offence, therefore, there will a trial and the judge will ban you from driving for a long period of time. Besides, there will be a heavy fine depending on the test result and the damage caused (in case of a traffic accident). Those non-resident drivers, or those who can not prove that they are residents, will have to pay the fine before moving the vehicle. Safety Tips To help keep you safe on a night out: - Have a designated driver - Find out about public transport options before you go out - Budget for a taxi or have a backup plan for getting home – a friend or parent you can call. - Arrange to stay overnight - Don't accept a lift from someone who has been drinking

Peter Osborne in his book "The assault on Truth" says Johnson lies habitually, with impunity and without conscience. At the heart of Johnson's elcome to my monthly column “A view from new politics is the nightmare assumption that emotion in politics the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling is more important that thought. He will hang onto power by using readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree his dead cat strategy where the past can be ignored as he (Johnson) or you may disagree with my views, I care not. throws another issue onto the table of public opinion. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of Ask yourself, where is the promised "Russia Report" detailing work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at interference in British politics? How is it that the report showing what is really winding me up. Priti Patel (Home Secretary) was deemed to have broken the Government ministerial code of conduct, and it was the report’s author Sir Alex Allan who resigned as the PM discounted the report Those of you who read my monthly diatribe will have noted that causing Sir Alex Allan to resign rather than the guilty party Patel? over the past few months I have kept away from politics. I decided How can it be that when Ian Blackwood SNP leader in the House that I would have some fun writing about my travels and leave the of Commons called Johnson a liar, it was Ian Blackwood who had world of politics alone for a while because in essence the world to leave the chamber rather than Johnson who would not know of politics, and especially the political situation in the United the truth if it bit him on the a**e. The awaited Sue Gray report Kingdom (my birth homeland), has been getting to me in that into Johnson having parties while the rest of the country tried to all the lying, cheating and downright contempt for what is right, stay alive whilst having to watch their loved ones die alone has rather than what is expedient in a Democracy has left me feeling been sidelined, or rather it has been held back as the Metropolitan uncomfortable that the person in charge, namely Boris de piffle police at last do their job and investigate Johnson's law breaking. spaffer liar in chief Johnson, appears to be unsackable. Remember when the It appears that he can lie and defame, break his own rules and Police said that they ignore what are the accepted morals and rules that are supposed did not investigate to govern, not only public life but also the norms of behaviour past matters, or of consensus that citizens in a democracy governed by Laws are was that the Justice expected to, at least try and live their lives by. I clearly remember Secretary, or indeed my parents telling me that it was wrong to lie, that it was wrong to was it both parties like cheat, that it was wrong to break the law. Whilst telling me this I wriggling can attest to the fact that they never implied that I could lie, cheat, snakes as they and break the law if I wanted to. What I was told was what all tried to let Johnson parents tell their offspring, life has to be lived with a concern for off the hook. Downing street behaviour and the needs of humanity. has no exemption Now with the above in mind, I cannot believe what has been going on as Booster Johnson lies and cheats and hangs onto power at under the eyes of the Law. If it is illegal for a citizen to behave in this way or that way, then it is illegal for politicians also. What is going on when Johnson uses the Dispatch Box in the House of Commons to tell lies and untruths. Crime in the UK is not 14% lower as spouted from the Dispatch Box by Johnson, Sir Keith Starmer was not responsible for Jimmy Saville not being prosecuted, also spouted by Johnson from the Dispatch. In fact history tells that Margaret Hilda Thatcher was a sponsor of Saville's Knighthood but he Johnson declined to announce that from the Dispatch Box as he doesn't deal in truths, for him it’s all about the world of the untruth. That’s it Dear Reader, I feel better now ...better for myself now I have got that of my chest, however for the country of my birth I am saddened. Lastly for my parents, who like all good people try and do their best for their children and others close to them. I will always offer a seat to my elders although I am one myself, I will always try to do the right thing, I will always respect other people, I will argue my case but always with respect. Thank you Mums and Dads everywhere, without people of principle the Johnsons of the world would be the downfall of us all. Latest news...Just as I finish this piece news is coming through that Sir Kier Starmer has been jostled and abused by a group of "Anti Vax" protesters who have been shouting "Traitor and Saville" at Starmer as he was returning to his parliamentary office. Starmer was rescued by police and moved away in a police car. Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the world of Trumpian politics fashioned in the UK by a Poundland Prime Minister and a gutless cohort of jobsworth ministers.

TAURUS Finances will cause tension, you must be prepared to listen to all sides before making a decision on an important purchase as it is not as straight forward a choice as it first seems. Once the decision has been made things will get back on track. GEMINI Try to avoid making any major decisions this month. It is a time for some inner reflection to ensure you know where you are headed before bad choices are made in haste. Talking things through will help. Maybe delegating some things will give you more time to concentrate on the more important matters. SAGITTARIUS A good spring clean will rid you of all the unwanted clutter in your life. As well as physical clutter it would be good to free yourself of some of your mental clutter as well in order to move forward. CAPRICORN Finding out what works best for you has been a revelation. Every part of your life has benefited by your giving up old habits which were holding you back. AQUARIUS You are lucky to have a very supportive network around you that looks after your wellbeing when you don’t. When things start to get chaotic they are always there to help calm the storm. Make sure you let them know how much you appreciate them. PISCES Cooperation is the word for this month. You will have to convince others though that this is to the benefit of you all. There will be a lot of resistance so you will have to use your diplomacy skills to their maximum to get everyone onside. Good luck.
