Top three eyewear trends for 2023

Specsavers Ópticas recently released an informative State of Eyewear report, identifying the big eyewear trends to look out for in 2023. To produce the report, research was carried out on behalf of Specsavers Ópticas by Curated Digital, a digital consultancy specialising in data driven and insight-led marketing. The report noted that over recent years, eyewear fashions have been dominated by decade nostalgia with retro nods to the oversized 70's square shapes, cat eye revivals and the 2000s comeback. And, although they still predict some of this homage to continue, they believe that the past truly will be the past with a new wave of future-grade glasses. Taking centre stage will be space-themed, alien-like shapes and chunky maximalist-esque frames. Here are three trends that Specsavers Ópticas predict will be a big hit in 2023.

BUGGED OUT

Inspired by the bug eye frames of the 80s, gigantic upturned tinted spectacles have been popular on the Fall/Winter 2022 runways.

Kylie Minogue 129€ YOUR DISCO NEEDS YOU PLAYFUL+ INVISIBLE

Pantone predicts this year’s colours will be all about blending history and innovation; by offering us bright, bold, positive, yet muted shades. This will creep into the current chunky acetate trends to give us playful almost invisible colours, which will reframe our notions of colour.

Viktor-Rolf 229€ VR 01 SUN RX GOING GALACTIC

Futuristic fits are here, with sci-fi and cyber eyewear set to take centre stage in 2023. Dystopian-core embodies the concept of ‘black is the new black’, featuring a dark and daring aesthetic.

Specsavers 109€ FRIDA

Quite simply, have you protected your family in a correct way?

The first question would be – have you taken out Life Insurance? You may have a Mortgage Protection policy, which means on your death the mortgage will be paid. But of course, this is nothing to do with providing your family with some financial security when they really need it. Mortgage Protection is a good policy to have as it will pay off any mortgage you have on your house, keeping your family secure in their home. This is death only cover, however there are some additional options you can add on if you require them.

For example for Mortgage Payment protection, for €100,000 of cover for a 50 year old can be as little as €305 per year.

Whereas life insurance provides a payment to your family, to cover funeral costs, inheritance taxes, etc. You can tailor the life policy to your own requirements and create a bespoke life insurance – whether to cover the initial costs incurred on your death or provide your family with a lump sum to provide for their future.

For example life cover of €50,000 for a 50 year old, can be as little as €155 a year.

You do need to be resident in Spain for these policies and there will be a simple health/medical questionnaire that you will need to complete online. These policies are available with monthly direct debit payments, and our policies will be in English.

I understand that when you go to the bank, they will try and sell you life insurance, both for yourself and your mortgage. Be careful as they tend to be more expensive and you are unable to tailor these policies for you own particular needs.

Alongside the life policies, we can provide various Accident Policies to give you protection throughout your life and provide support should you sadly experience a life changing accident. Unfortunately I had a bit of a stumble a few weeks back which resulted in me badly hurting my wrist, so everything has taken me so much longer to do. I am finding it very frustrating, however every cloud has a silver lining and my not so little angel has been forced to do a little more than usual around the house.

Valentine's Day has been and gone and I must say I was spoilt with flowers and a lovely meal out, and I didn't even need to prompt!!! Let's hope Mother's Day has the same outcome???

We've had a very cold spell recently and I'm sure the electricity companies won't be complaining as the cost of heating our homes will have surely gone up. Although thank goodness it doesn't ever last that long. I'm just living in hope that we don't have a wet March like last year.

FIXED INCOME RETURNS AT REDUCED MINIMUM INVESTMENT AMOUNTS

Following on from my article last month, I am able to offer the below opportunities to experienced investors only. Please read on for details and call or email me for more information.

1 Santa Marta Solar Park

Initially, this huge 200 Mega Watt renewable energy solar park based in the Algarve, Portugal was open to investors at a minimum of USD125,000 and was due to mature 31 December 2025 at 20% per annum. I can offer this investment to sophisticated investors only until 31 march 2023 at minimums of £25,000 or equivalent AND interestingly, due to the fact that a Portuguese Golden Visa fund is looking to purchase the entire Santa Marta project, this investment is likely reimburse investors in 12 months’ time with a coupon payment of 20% plus initial investment capital. Should the investment go full term to 31 December 2025 investors will receive a total return of 55% over a 2 year 9 month remaining time. Listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange.

2 Discounted Debt US Loan Stock

In summary, major U.S banks very often elect to sell off underperforming debt to third parties, typically at a 95% discount to face value meaning they will buy $100 of debt for $5. The promoter, CSM Securities

Sàrl, Luxembourg has access to the best debt buyers/originators in the USA and agents who then recover the funds from the debtors, through a regulated process of settlement plans. It is a tried and tested set of metrics which has

worked well for decades. This really is a fantastic uncorrelated asset class which has stood the test of time and below are the two related offerings:

(i) 12.5% p.a. BOND

The most popular version of this CSM range, namely their 12.5% 3 year bond, is closing to new business on 31st March 2023 and this, whilst paying interest twice yearly, will fully mature with return of capital on 31st August 2025. Minimum investment £20,000 or €25,000. Listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange.

(ii) 10% p.a. BOND

Version 2 of the same product pays 10% and is closing to new business on 31st July 2023 which also pays interest twice yearly, and will fully mature with return of capital on 31st August 2024. Minimum investment £20,000 or €25,000. Listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange.

If you would like to know more about the above please call or e-mail me as soon as possible as we have a final investment deadline on these.

BASIC OWNER'S GUIDE FOR HABITATION LICENCES IN 7 ESSENTIAL POINTS

1- Currently, the submission (registration receipt) of applying for a habitation license (not the license itself in most cases) will be required by your estate agent, conveyancer or prospective purchasers when marketing and completing the sale of a property.

2- There are two types of habitation licence: first and second habitation licences. The first habitation licence is only issued once the building has been completed and is valid for 5 years. Second habitation licences, which are the ones generally used to sell or buy properties, can be issued several times, and they expire after 10 years.

3- There are different names for a habitation licence and they all mean the same: ocupation licence, ocupatioon cedule or habitation cedule.

4- The requirements to issue a habitation licence vary enormously depending on each municipality.

5- To be able to process a habitation licence, each town hall has different registration taxes, the most common being:

- Rojales: 50€ - Orihuela: from 102 - 111€ (depending on build size) - San Miguel de Salinas: 100€ - Daya Nueva: 50€

Torrevieja: 17.50€ - San Isidro: 50€ - San Fulgencio: 50€

- Formentera del Segura: 60€.

6- They are achieved by submitting a dossier with the compilation of the Title Deeds, annual Townhall tax, and NIE, one or more certificates by an Architect and sometimes complete plans of the property. Requirements vary significantly between the different municipalities.

7- Only Architects can sign off Habitation Certificates.

Martinez de la Casa Architects has experience in thousands of Habitation Licences throughout Alicante and offers delivery within a strict 10 working day deadline, services generally priced at 229€ (IVA included), depending on the Townhall and requirements and registration tax. Please contact us for an accurate quote based on your property's location, and we will make the whole process easy, fast and cost-effective for you.

Martinez de la Casa Architects is one of the most prominent and respectable practices in the area, providing all types of Certificates and Licenses, amongst other services. They are the Nº1 company in EPC Certificates (121€ inc IVA), Habitation Certificates and for Retrospective Licences for pools (229 € inc IVA) and extensions (326 € inc IVA).

For enquiries or to arrange an appointment, please call 665 810 411 or visit www.martinezdelacasa.com to see an impressive list of over 200 testimonials by different clients.

Fantastic amount raised for the Butterfly Children's Charity

The Mad Hatters and the customers from The Pint Depot were clowning around on La Zenia beach on New Year’s Day and raised €2,504.67 as they completed their annual New Year's Day swim in aid of DEBRA. Some of their customers came from the UK and Ireland for the holidays to attend this spectacular event.

La Zenia Beach was once again the setting for the Mad Hatters annual New Year's day sponsored swim, it was a lovely sunny day and this year they were dressed in clown suits. The swim took place at 2pm but, before the swimmers took to the water there was time for a photo shoot as crowds gathered. Once the photo shoot was completed the crowds cheered on all the swimmers as they entered the water, all participants had to swim for a minimum of 15 minutes which they all did with ease. Shirley dressed as the Mad Hatter was on the beach on hand with her tin to accept donations, which were greatly received. With the swim completed and the clown suits back on everyone left the beach and returned to the Pint Depot. In full clown costumes, outside the Pint Depot the Mad Hatters performed their dance to the Bee Gees Night Fever, which went down a storm. All the customers showed their appreciation and the donations kept on coming.

DEBRA would like to thank the Mad Hatters for all their hard work in organising this annual event and their continued support, the customers from the Pint Depot and friends who support them and give so very generously to our cause. Since 2019 this event has raised €8,072.68 for our charity for which we are extremely grateful. From the bottom of every Butterfly Child's heart we THANK YOU ALL.

WHAT IS RADIO ASTRONOMY?

I concluded last month's article about using an ordinary radio to listen to shooting stars by saying it was a simple bit of radio astronomy. I should have been prepared for the inevitable question 'what is radio astronomy?'

Something that mystifies many people.

Ok then, I'll do my best to answer, and I'll keep it straightforward, in essence it's not very complicated. Understanding the results of what is discovered is the tricky bit, but I'll come to that later.

A radio telescope looks at the sky by picking up radio waves instead of light waves. These are both a part of what's called the electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light is one frequency in the electromagnetic band, and radio waves are another.

Back in the 1930s a clever chap called Karl Janski must have been thinking something similar. He reasoned that if a star emits visible light, it probably emits radiation in lots of other frequencies. He was correct, and he built the first radio telescope. Nowadays we “look” at stars, galaxies etc in virtually every part of the spectrum, radio, x ray, infra red, gamma rays, each method showing us something different about our target.

A radio telescope doesn't normally give a picture, it puts its output into various things. A loudspeaker, a graph, a wiggly line on paper, but mostly into numbers. These numbers will tell us the precise frequency, signal strength duration and much more about what it's listening to. Looking into space with a radio telescope shows a huge number of things that our eyes will never see. When someone thinks of a radio telescope, it's quite likely that the massive dishes at Jodrell bank will come to mind, they are very spectacular and well worth a visit if you are ever near there. What you are actually looking at is a kind of aerial, a sort of massive version of a satellite dish. The first clever bit they do is to point precisely at a chosen point in space, and then follow it as the Earth turns. The precision needed is huge and it's a great technical achievement. The rest of the clever stuff happens firstly in a building where a mass of electronics makes sense of the signal, then the information is sent to various researchers who try to understand what it all means. All this seems very remote from just looking through a pair of binoculars, and almost impossible for an ordinary amateur astronomer to even consider trying, but that isn't true thanks to your ordinary home computer and a clever inexpensive gadget. The gadget is called an SDR which stands for a Software Dependant Radio and what it does is turn your computer into a sort of super radio, that can replace a very expensive receiver used by professionals. Is it really so simple and easy? No of course it isn't but it can be done and next month I'll tell you what's involved, and what happened when I tried it for myself.

Monumental March fiesta

The most spectacular fiesta in the Valencia region is celebrated in March with a riot of colour, noise and amazing giant monuments. Fallas is one of the most important fiestas in Valencia with enormous statues put up in the streets for a few days before being burnt on March 19 - the day of the cremà - in celebration of St Joseph's Day.

The best place by far to see the fallas fiesta is in Valencia itself where you can see hundreds of these colourful, often satirical, statues. The mascletàs in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, Valencia, are held daily throughout March until the day of the cremà at 2pm and have to be seen - and heard - to be believed.

As with many traditions, fallas has evolved over time to become a major tourist attraction. Its roots lie in the Middle Ages when carpenters used planks of wood as candleholders in the winter. To celebrate the arrival of spring, they would burn the wood. Over time, the wood was dressed in clothes to look like a person. These carvings became more and more elaborate until the wondrous fallas fiesta evolved.

Drake-Jones' Madrid. The history, places to visit, tapas and museums

Stephen Drake-Jones was born in Leeds, Yorkshire and moved to Spain during Franco's last year as dictator in 1975. He has since lived and worked in Madrid as a historian, he is also the Chairman of the Wellington Society Madrid. His daughter Clare was born in Madrid and often works there but is based on the Costa Blanca, Altea.

Together they have spent the last three years writing a book called Drake Jones' Madrid. Which combines Madrid's rich history, architecture, Art, scandalous affairs, murder most foul and military conflicts. The lives and deaths of some of Spain's most famous characters are included, amongst them the world renowned author Cervantes and the curious story of his protagonist, Don Quixote.

They have also included fascinating historical sites, museums, squares, churches, the Royal Palace and an entertaining who's who of many statues. Also covered are some of their favourite restaurants, tapas and places to sample regional Spanish wines. Most of these places mentioned have a curious history of their own, including one named after Madrid's most notorious highwayman, Louis Candelas; another where one of Napoleon's soldiers was murdered and his body hidden in a wine vat. Both the cellar and wine vat still exist to this day and can be visited.

They have also added some of the oldest shops dating from a baker's of 1830, a hatter's since 1832, a traditional fan shop from the 1850s and another specialising in cloaks, which opened in 1901, and has served the likes of Picasso, Hollywood stars and Royalty.

The book was designed so that the reader can dip into the parts they are most interested in visiting or to discover them from the comfort of their own home. To buy a signed copy please visit their website www.wellsoc.org or if you are in the Altea/ Benidorm area you can call Clare on (+34)685 524 049.

Sonrisas Harmony

If you love to sing and you haven’t joined Sonrisas Harmony, you are missing out. This multinational A Cappella Chorus was formed in September 2022, with 21 members. They have now grown in number and status. After performing to packed out audiences over the Christmas period, Sonrisas Harmony have increased by an astounding 11 new members. Their American born Musical Director Valerie Lynch said “It is an honour to stand in front of this wonderful bunch of ladies each week, the sound of their beautiful voices and the energy they bring to rehearsal is so uplifting”.

Many of the ladies have never sung in any formal chorus before. One new member said “I was so nervous walking into the rehearsal room, I didn’t know what to expect having only sung in the shower. I should not have worried; I was made so welcome and now I feel part of the Sonrisas Family.” Another commented “It is great how we get to sing and have an additional social group too”, jokingly adding “you have to come if only for the occasional home-made cakes”.

In April Sonrisas Harmony have been asked to take part in the opening show to one of the biggest events on the European A Cappella singing calendar in Calpe. Chorus groups will come from all over the world to take part.

May 2023 of course brings the celebration of King Charles lll coronation, Sonrisas Harmony have a very special event planned and places will be limited. To know more, you can follow them on their social media page. If you would like to join Sonrisas Harmony or just want to see if A Cappella singing is for you, go along to the rehearsal any Tuesday 10.30 – 13.30 at A Estribor Restaurant function room next to the arches, just off the AP7 junction: Los Alcazares Norte. The members come from many surrounding areas and car share is an option for those coming from afar.

VEGA BAJA GARDEN CLUB

Who is a typical garden club member? You might suppose it would be someone with a decent sized garden, perhaps some well designed paths and a regal assortment of feature plants tastefully placed in a manner that would blow Allan Titchmarsh's socks off. Well, that's just a dream for most of us, the reality is that the members are a mix of everyone including those with some pots on a balcony, a small terrace or a typical Spanish garden in need of some TLC. In reality a typical member is just someone who just likes plants and gardens and likes talking to others who are the same.

We've had a variety of fun talks and demonstrations in the past. Andrea Oates gave a talk on making your own planters and pots from old tea towels, Elizabeth Martin talked about pests in the garden, that's the ones with too many legs! We've even had a herb based food talk, with herby nibbles to try.

The club meets once a month at a bar in Formenterra in the afternoon of the first Monday of the month, with a typical meeting lasting an hour and a half. We usually have a raffle with a selection of plants as prizes, and a talk by one of the members on whatever takes our fancy. It's a very informal affair, and new members will be made especially welcome.

Would you like to come along and see what it's like? We'd be very glad to hear from you. Just send a message to gardenclub.vegabaja@gmail.com and we will give you the details.

Although you are sure you know exactly what you want, asking for a second opinion may bring to light ideas and reasons which never occurred to you before. It’s not that they want to change your mind, just make you really see all the options available to you.

TAURUS

Changes at home are long overdue and you can’t put them off any longer. As usual once you get started, it is not as bad as you thought it was going to be and you wish you had done it ages ago.

GEMINI

The start of the month sees some obstacles thrown in your direction, but keep going and find solutions rather than focusing on the problems. Hesitation and worrying if it is worth it cannot be allowed to hold you back.

CANCER

Family has to take priority this month, but that does not mean the rest of your commitments have to suffer. Attention to detail is important and taking that extra time will make all the difference.

LEO

This month you will find yourself in some amazing and surprising situations with groups of people who you would never normally mix with. Make the most of these opportunities to see things for different points of view.

VIRGO

By approaching things from a different angle you will find answers which have been eluding you for a long time. This new direction, if followed will help you change how you approach many aspects of your life.

LIBRA

Things really are starting to go much more smoothly for you and your co-workers, which is making it much easier for everyone. Problems that were brewing have blown over as everyone realises you are a team and all there with the same goals in mind.

SCORPIO

Things are started to be taken for granted. Spending time with family and loved ones will put things back into perspective, and once again make you all appreciate each other and each others roles.

SAGITTARIUS

Spend some time on you, your health and wellbeing. If you have missed any checkups, dental checks etc then get them booked in. Keeping on top of them now will avoid any problems in the future.

CAPRICORN

Thinking before you speak is really important this month. It is not going to take much for you to be misunderstood - you know what you are saying but not thinking it through first could leave everyone else with totally the wrong end of the stick.

AQUARIUS

You are so optimistic about the future at the moment that it is contagious giving everyone a sense of wellbeing. Don’t get too complacent otherwise your hard work will start to unravel.

PISCES

Your friends are liking the new happier and more sociable you, although they may be a bit wary incase it does not last. Well done for this change as it is not easy for you to show your feeling as openly as you are doing at the moment.
