22 year old Australian producer and songwriter LUPA J's (Imogen's) body of work to date has seen her featured as ​THE INDEPENDENT (UK)​'Spotlight Artist', earned a​n​ n​ omination for the AUSTRALIAN MUSIC PRIZE and FBI RADIO SMAC AWARD for 'Album of the Year'​and includes an impressive touring history​supporting the likes of G ​ RIMES, ALICE GLASS (CRYSTAL CASTLES), SARAH BLASKO and TEGAN AND SARA​. Her songs tell the story of her navigation through identity, relationships and her rite of passage into adulthood. Our Issue 9 featured musician, BEL, spoke to Imogen during lockdown; 2 intensely creative and talented musicians talking about life, emotions and of course, music.


How are you feeling during this pandemic overall? Inspired? Hopeful? Scared? Anxious? A mix? It’s definitely been quite all over the place for me! I’ve found that I’m constantly getting caught off guard by emotions in really intense ways, more than ever. I think it’s just a massive overwhelming thing for anyone to process, and it’s easy to become out of touch with how you feel in a ‘shut down’ reaction. How are you using your time during this pandemic? Learning new skills? Bingeing Netflix? All answers are okay and valid. I’ve gotten an insane amount of work done on my next body of work - I was really busy trying to settle down into a job and a house in Melbourne just prior to this, and I barely had any time to write music. It was really starting to get to me. But thanks to the pandemic I’ve suddenly had all this time to write again. Aside from that I’ve been trying out new recipes, giving myself new hair-dye jobs or cuts almost every weekend & bingeing Drag Race with my partner. When you write music, do you follow or use a particular process in regards to lyrics, production, composition etc? Lately I’ve been changing it up constantly depending on the track! If it’s more emotional / lyric focused I start with lyrics, and then chords, and then production. If it’s more dance focused I just dive right into the production, starting with synths or beats.

How has this pandemic affected you personally & professionally? Well I was working as a barista prior to this so immediately lost work. (Thank god for jobseeker though). I also made a last minute decision to jump on a plane to Sydney the day all the intense restrictions were announced, when I realised there was a good chance I wouldn’t be able to travel interstate for a while. My partner and my family are all in Sydney so it was import for me to be with them. In terms of music - it’s been absolutely amazing for my writing, as I touched on before, but I’m so devastated about all the performance related ambitions I had for this year that I’ve had to let go of. Personally, it’s led me to confront a lot of things I had been struggling with - but I think that’s allowed room for growth, I’m now more in touch with myself than I had been for a while. What’s the most important message you want to share as a queer musician to the queer community through your music? I think the big thing for me and my journey with queerness is just slowly realising more and more how out of touch I was with my identity and my desires for so many years. I think the thing that I’ve really struggled with was trying to shape myself into what I thought I "should" be, or what would most obviously lead to me being liked / receiving love or affirmation. It’s really hard to acknowledge complexity; or to honour the more difficult to digest parts of yourself. I’m still getting there, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I catch myself off guard with how little I know about myself in years to come. So I think what I’ve been trying to touch on with my music since first acknowledging my queerness in ‘Swallow Me Whole’ has largely just been about listening to yourself; trying to genuinely understand and honour your identity. What’s your most and least favourite part about being a musician/artist? My favourite part is definitely the writing / producing process in itself, and how it allows me to really figure out what I’m feeling; what’s urgent and important to me to express in that moment. Live music (in as stress-free a situation as possible) is also really sacred to me. I think my least favourite part would have to be the whole ‘career’ aspect to it - trying to get yourself heard, the strategies and politics around that, all that stuff. I hate that there are people in the industry that hold so much power over who does and doesn’t get their music in front of people. What’s next musically for Lupa J? I’ve been working on a body of work that will be coming out sometime before the end of the year, with a couple more singles & videos in the lead up! GOD Mode

I’ve titled this interview God mode as it seems fitting on how I

see you and your work. Your ability to evoke such dark feelings and conjure up these crazy characters from your mind and put them onto canvas the way you do still intrigues me. As your whole personality, your calm, kind energy and nature, strongly conflicts with this mysterious dark side to your art. I wanted to find out a little more about how my idol, best friend, teacher and all round genius partner of greatness ticks when it comes to the depicting of the demons on his back that he hides so well. Eerily relatable demons only seen escaping myth by actualizing into reality through his imagination.

The creation of his paintings are hypnotic to watch. Characters not only often late to the process party come rolling in from unpiloted smears, smudges and basically chaotic mess. That all initially seems careless and thoughtless, only soon to reveal faces of some sort of familiarity or nostalgia, but in settings and places i’ve never seen or been to, which subjectively for me, positions the viewer in a confusing memory that, questionably, have never existed and it leaves you secretly wanting more. Since moving to the Mountains i’ve felt an incredible shift in my own art practice and personal growth. I see you going through very similar behaviours daily, which is inspiring; can you tell us a little bit about, how (and if) it has changed you and what you’ve been up to since leaving the city? I am foggy on transitional descriptions because to me the move was just an improvement into our new environment. I’m sure you would agree we came here very much with the creative existence as our top priority. A new struggle or puzzle or whatever it takes to embrace every turn. Regardless, it’s a new chapter that has been a ‘slow thrill’. How do you find living and working with another creative? Hmm. haha I am trying to recall when I haven’t! ‘I say I aint ever lived with no creatives and I aint ever not worked with them if they were!” Creatives are peculiar creatures. I circumnavigate them often. Mainly for numerous reasons; They are closer to the flow. Some of them you can’t. Dreams etc But living with you is more than all that again. It's a creative adventure. It's exploration. I Love you Babe. I love living and working on our continuous bat crazy magic shit. Whatever it may be at the time. It’s a roll. You’ve worked with some pretty big clients like Hewlet Packard, Deadmau5, Foo Fighters, Ikea and recently, Canva and Young Henry’s just to name a few. What would be your next collaboration dream? Ive always wanted to be involved in a Banksy operation, purely for the prestige. I’d love us to take our fashion label, Father Superior, to a meeting with say Longina from Caligula or Die Antwoord or Gucci or something. Then see where.


Speed round: What is your purpose? To be a double edged mirror. What do you fear? Absolution How do you want to be remembered? Hopefully in some rare animal leather bound hard back, perfect bind and fancy front matter marbling. Every page turn emitting a perfume of fresh minted cash money! Complete with gold embossed index list of all time reputable contributors. Ha ha ha but no, I’m not sure how I can answer this I do like thinking about becoming a personality through rumour. I think if i’m here, hypothetically alone in my own personal unique experiences, so is every one of us. So how would I know how i'm truly remembered? Each and every memory is different to the next. Just as the fate of any one of my artworks. Once announced “complete”, its existence is entirely in the hands of its audience and therefore, now, completely out of the creators control. Sorry im not God, I”m stoned. I believe we are all ‘God’. What makes good art? An expanding variety of intelligence and its application to the world of magic. Why did you first start making art? Ha. If I was to seize this opportunity of being published, I’d say I must have immediately recognised, or clued onto the fact that imagination is a key and making art opens a portal to an infinite intelligence. A realm where canvas becomes fly paper to pick up certain vibrations or frequencies that occupy 90% of the universe. Naively known as ‘vacuum’. And I know now, it's all limited only by your own concept of your own potential. Shortly after four years of graphic design schooling, you worked closely under internationally renowned Pop Artist Ben Frost, who when I asked to describe you, he responded with "the art world is like a vampire and CREON's brushes tickle those blood drenched teeth".


A lot of people would describe your work as dark or confronting, is this intentional? How would you describe your own work? Well it's funny because I never use to really see my work as dark or confronting. If anything, I found my subject matter pretty comical most of the time, other worldly, perhaps grotesque? Or if I could pinch a cinematic genre to describe it; ‘fantasy horror’. Plus my colour palettes have always been very bright and/or graffiti-ish. Speaking of films, I remember a slew of disappointments when I hit the horror movie intrigue age and delved deep into the dark world of horror to understand it at the core. But most of it was very disappointing to me and I concluded that true, entertaining horror was a myth-like rarity and must be extremely unobtainable. I had never intended or even thought about it like that until so many people made similar remarks. Then eventually, over all the years, my running theme was blatantly monsters, I had to admit to myself that there was a darkness of sorts in my art. I find your artistic approach and process so fascinating, as it’s so different to how I work. Can you run us through your current collection concept and how you start an artwork? Often I smear some watered down paint around suggestively with big strokes. Like one of those therapy artists until I start to see faces or characters emerge. Then I bring the vision of those characters from my imagination into reality. As this process continues I add costume or props etc. This part is often an easy process. I just go with the flow adding and refining until the entire canvas has a dialogue. Sorry and thank you. Ive had fun.

THOMPSON Ellie Thompson is a Sydney based Tattooist whoes work is a beautiful mix of soft botanicals, neo-traditional and so much more. She had some time to talk to us about her life making art and the creative journey she is living. How and when did you get into Tattooing? I have always loved drawing and when I was about 24 I had a job where I travelled solo a lot. I found that drawing really entertained me during boring hotel stays, and I got really obsessed! I was drawing very tattoo style stuff and dreamed of being a tattoo artist. I was getting tattooed by Flick at Manly Tattoo at the time and she suggested I apply for an apprenticeship. It was a ‘right place at the right time’ scenario and I was given an apprenticeship at Dee Why tattoo in 2013. My apprenticeship was quick and intense! Lots of mopping, cleaning tubes, tattooing myself and convincing friends to let me tattoo them. By mid-2013 I was working full time at Manly Tattoo and my career continued to evolve from there. I will always be thankful to my teacher Joe Kintz (@joekintztattooing) now at Whistler Street Tattoo for helping me have this amazing job! How do you describe your personal style? I love many different tattoo styles and have tried not to be pigeonholed into one style. I do notice that my work depends a bit on the trends - sometimes I do weeks of mandalas, then all peonies, then lots of snakes! I really enjoy being guided by what my customers are into at the time. There are two styles that I tend to bounce between, one is soft, botanical style florals and animals with thin lines and muted colours, the other neo-traditional and geometric/ornamental stuff with high contrast and bold lines. I find that tattooing in these two styles means I never get bored and every day is something different. Who or what influences your artwork? Other tattooers definitely influence my work the most. I have always been a big fan of Sophia Baughan (@sophiabaughan), Natalie Gardiner (@petalspuppet) and everyone at Wonderland Tattoo in Portland (@wonderlandpdx) for the botanical style stuff. I also love looking at old botanical illustration books, exhibitions and of course just wandering around looking at beautiful flowers and plants. For the bold, black and grey/neo-trad style I love Demi Iacopetta (@demi.iacopetta), Sergio Mesa (sergioluismesa), Garth Neale (@garthbneale) and Emily Rose Murray (@emily_rose_murray). I am also very influenced by ornate objects and architecture. I love looking at the stone carvings on the buildings here in Sydney or beautiful vases and urns in any museum or antiques store. There are beautiful patterns everywhere. Whenever I travel, I go to galleries and museums and end up with countless reference photos!



Who are your favourite artists of any medium? I don’t have any one favourite. At the moment I am very inspired by my wonderful co-workers, Elizabeth Huxley May (@elizabethhuxleymay) and Sophia Baughan (@sophiabaughan). My sister-in-law Amanda (@pico__pico__) is very crafty and she constantly inspires me to get creative! What are your favourite subjects to tattoo and how do you approach designing a custom piece? Every client that I take on is something that I’m excited to tattoo. I am definitely lucky that I get to chose subject matter that I really enjoy tattooing. Usually a customer will give me a general idea, eg. A snake, dagger and rose. I then source references pics and put it all together! Its often a smooth and easy process but occasionally the customer and I need to make adjustments together to get it 100% right. I usually draw the morning of the customers appointment which can get stressful, but I find that I work better that way. I few specific things I always really love tattooing are ornate objects, wild roses, folk patterns, snakes, sacred hearts and magnolias!

so lucky that I got to do that and can't wait to go back asap! Share 3 random facts about yourself. 1. I grew up on a property in Kangaroo Valley. We had only solar power and no TV or phone reception. 2. My two front teeth are fake, I knocked them out surfing when I was 13. 3. I am obsessed with jewellery. Before tattooing I worked in jewellery sales. If I ever wanted a career change it would be something within that industry.

When not tattooing, what other forms of art do you indulge in? I love getting crafty, making macrame wall hangings and knitting - I find it very calming. I recently had a baby so I have had about 3 months off tattooing! In the spare time I have to get creative I have been doing some watercolour and gouache painting. I do all of my work drawings on my iPad Pro with Procreate, its a really fun app to make digital artworks so I also enjoy that! Who is your favourite tattoo artist? I definitely don’t have one favourite but a few of my faves are Elizabeth Huxley May, Sophia Baughan, Garth Neale, Emily Rose Murray, Yoshi Honjo, Demi Iacopetta, Vic James, Michael Kelly, Lauren Melina and Jamie August. What is your favourite moment in your career to date? Probably the first day I worked at Three Kings Tattoo in East Village, NYC. I never dreamed that I would get to live and work in New York City, let alone be booked solid with exciting projects and amazing customers! I still feel

Lavrence, from the Queer fringes of Sydney, has arrived! Posing the question - Why exist quietly when your true self is just waiting to shine? The singer-songwriter is ecstatic to share the universe that he has lovingly created and chatted with Vanessa and Arna of the fabulous No Frills Twins giving us an insight into his world. Radio Man is our favourite song of yours; it’s such a bop and has a really cool 80’s sound!!! What did the song writing process of this song look like? Did you come up with the song idea first then build a track around it? Or did you write the song to the track? Thank you so much! The instrumental for Radio Man was created in the studio with my producer Bobby Gray. We had already established a sonic pallet that was exciting us at the time – that new wave, 80s, indie-dance meets pop vibe. While we were working on the instrumental, I was dancing around the room and humming melodies into my phone. The lyrics came later in bursts while on trains or walking around the city at night. The music video for Radio Man was actually shot where I wrote most of it on a particular walk home. I only realised that later on, very serendipitous. Do you have a favourite team of people you like to work with consistently? (Such as songwriters, producers, videographers and back up dancers?) Or do you work with different people for each project? I’m very particular about who I collaborate with. I’ll never work with someone out of convenience and because of that, I like to work consistently when possible. It’s a special experience building a body of work alongside another artist and growing together on each project. I’m always open to working with new collaborators that I resonate with as long as there’s a mutual excitement to do so. Ultimately, I’m drawn to people who have cultivated their own style in whatever art form they do. Who were your musical idols growing up? And who are they now? Growing up in the 90s, I was always drawn to the strong female pop star archetype (e.g. the Spice Girls, Britney, Christina, and Beyoncé etc.). I think that was because as a queer person, I resonated with their themes of empowerment and removing shame around femininity. While I wouldn’t say I have ‘idols’ now, I’m still very much drawn to female artists who approach pop in their own unique way and incorporate important societal messages in their work. Can you recall the first time you ever performed? Tell us about it. I believe it was in year 3 at school. I was part of the drama team with my twin brother and when it came to the performance, I was so nervous that he had to read my lines for me! It’s funny because in the music video for my new single ‘Nightshade’ I’m the one performing for him, encouraging him to liberate himself – kind of a 180.

How did you first discover you could sing? Was your family supportive & encouraging? I was belting around the house as early as I could remember, probably annoying my entire family in the process. I used to come up with fantasy pop stars in my head and imagine their outfits and performances, even their personal life. It was like a build-you-own movie for me. My family were very supportive; I remember the first time I sang a full song to them. It was in the car and I sang Anastasia’s “I’m Outta Love” and they loved it, I was put into singing lessons shortly after. You incorporate the perfect looks for each performance; can you tell us who are your go-to designers & MUA’s? Thank you! For makeup, I love working with Marcus Petaccia, who’s I saw created beautiful looks on you two and has been featured in Fěn Hóng Sè Magazine before. Marcus is a great example of the kind of artist I love working with; unapologetically queer and avant-garde but at the same time refined and singular. I also love to work with drag artists Lady Fur (she does a killer winged eye-liner that I just can’t get over) and Cherry Ripe; Cherry Ripe was the makeup artist on this shoot. I chose her because I wanted a 70s punk vibe and Cherry is the literal queen of that aesthetic. In terms of designers, I love wearing Australian label Youkhana. I’ve worked with Youkhana repeatedly because they make the most stunning hand-made couture pieces. They’re one of the few labels I know of that make clothing specifically for queer gender non-conforming bodies and is a perfect example of an artist with their own vision and unique aesthetic. Dance is a big part of your performances, can you tell us about your background in dance and what is your favourite genre? Dancing is such an important part of my life; it’s always been something that puts me in my power. I found my love of dance early in my childhood. My big sister is an incredible ballet dancer and I remember dancing for her every chance I’d get and she helped convince my mother to put me in dance lessons. I ended up getting a partial scholarship to attend a performing arts high school from year 7 onwards where I studied all styles of dance. I’d say my favourite styles are Dancehall, Vogue, Waacking and Commercial Jazz. What’s one big dream or goal that you have?
