Shapes Harmony and contrast, in the ambiguous combination of shades. Our senses are rediscovered and bewitched by a dance of colours. A splendid chaos that remembers us the infinite facets of ourselves. Violent stasis, imperfect chromaticism, desire to dare. Everything leads us to a new meaning of aesthetics. Taste with your eyes, read with sounds, look with flavour, colour as liberation.

Melbourne Fashion Lab is the brain child of Amanda who saw a gap in the market in the fashion industry for start up labels that needed to be filled. We sat down with Amanda and asked her a few questions about MFL; it’s origins, it’s process, it’s designers. MFL is the new go to place if you are looking to start a fashion business catering to all requests. Can you tell us how you came up with the idea to create this type of business model? When I was working for a small manufacturer, we received many enquiries regarding small run production and sampling but the business could not action them as they were only after large orders 500+ which is unobtainable for a start up. Another problem faced by the start up labels is that they often need to talk to many different people, there is no streamline process so that is why I decided to start my own business and cater specifically to these smaller start ups, whether they know a lot or they just have an idea. It is our job to create their idea into a product that they can get manufactured. Melbourne Fashion Lab has it’s own patternmaker, sample maker, textile artist, graphic designer, and PR Marketing. We want to be a one stop shop for fashion labels from idea to product to getting it out there. One of the features or packs that you offer is the Tech Pack, can you tell us a bit more about this pack, why is it the best place to start? What other packs do you offer to help in the process of helping a fashion label start up? We offer a number of packages for our clients, we usually encourage our clients to book a consultation first to discuss their requirements and aspirations, followed by a Support Me Package which is tailored made to what they require. They may need samples only, or patterns and samples, or they might be at the very start of their idea where they need help with developing their ideas. The Support Me Package gives them 10 hours of support at a prepaid cost, if they require more support they keep the hourly rate locked in. It’s great for clients who have a budget, and worried they might go over. We sit down and discuss what is the best value for them. Some of our clients are happy to do the sewing work but they need help with the patterns and the tech packs - so we are guiding them through the whole process. Some of our clients have done development work, and they would like a Tech Pack. The Tech Pack is a working document that explains what the materials and trims are, what the garment looks like as a “technical illustration”, followed by how it sewn together, what labels and tags are required, and most importantly a sizing specification page. Essentially when done correctly, a machinist can work from this and commence the work without stopping.
MFL runs an interactive workshop “Creating your own fashion label” that hosts a number of guest speakers from the industry talking everyone through the stages involved, sharing real life experience. At your event in June some of the team at MFL spoke along with other guest speakers. Can you tell us a bit about the event, your guest speakers and what type of topics were raised & discussed. The Create Your Own Fashion Label was a big success, we received great feedback from our attendees such as they loved the workbook on the day, and activities across the different topics. The idea behind the workshop was to have a number of speakers come in and discuss their key areas of expertise, to give a really rounded experience. The problem with fashion school, is they teach you to be a fashion designer or a garment technician, which is great but it leaves alot of areas such as PR & Marketing, Branding, Logo Development, Pricing.... many key areas to create a business are not discussed. We had our Graphic Designer Rachel discuss the importance of logo development and creating a classic logo that doesn’t need to be updated over time, versus using a trendy logo now which will need to always be updated to remain trendy. We had one of our clients from Sundace The Label discuss the importance of branding in terms of her brand values, and mission statements - how to create your own values, and your own mission statement. I spoke about the manufacturing and sampling stages involved, what is required to order wholesale fabric and trims, and how to negotiate smaller orders. We also discussed the various ways to price products, wholesale/retail, etc. We also had Bianca who is our PR & Marketing Guru, talk about how to use social media such as Facebook and Instagram to get followers, get your product out there, and how to market it through these channels. Can you tell us about some of the labels/brands that you have assisted at MFL. We have worked with alot of small start ups, whether it’s from the very start or somewhere in between such as Variety Hour The Label who we helped with sample sewing or Amberdays The Label which we assisted with initial patterns and tech packs. We also helped Sundace The Label translating her ideas into sewing patterns and samples and Roseau The Label working on a classic duster jacket. What is the one piece of advice that you tell all start-ups that come to speak with you? The one piece of advice I would offer is to stay true to your brand, a lot of my clients are the brand so it’s really important to know what is important to your brand and stick to it. If you are all about ethical and sustainable fashion, then you should consider that at every step of the way from your idea to the fabrics you use to the how you package it (or lack of packaging). Don’t water it down!

Jodee Knowles
We featured Jodee in our first issue with her hauntingly beautiful artworks that were heavily based on the human condition and the emotional state that makes or breaks the human existance. We are excited to feature her again as her art evolves into the works that you will see over the next few pages. The following are Jodee's own words as she talks about taking new directions. "... My new works are an exploration of distortion. For a long time I felt trapped in my style and not capable of much more. I have wanted to use different materials and media for some time now, to better express what I’m trying to achieve. These new works see me removing the colour from the line work, from cell animated, pop culture and cartoon imagery. I want to give the viewer a sense of familiarity and yet uneasiness, to add confusion within the placement of the work. Iconic, nostalgic cell animation and the juxtaposition of memorable colours and characters are portrayed with a saddened, warped reality to give each character a personality, relatable characteristics or expressions that are confrontational. Traits that we all see in ourselves. By finding the right expressions for some of my favourite cartoon characters that I can relate to, I'm giving them more relatable expressions, with words sometimes, placed to help get the emotional content I require across. Everything I do is based on the human condition and trying to make sense of myself and the individuals I surround myself with. These works are to help develop my latest solo show, which will be an interactive experience. An emotional distortion of colours, sounds, characters, video content, installation works and works available for sale. The show will be seen throughout Australia early next year, keep watching my instagram for updates about the show..."

Creative’s Spotlight: Fashion Stylist’s
This is our first of many spotlight’s on some of the amazingly talented creative’s that we have featured in our pages. Our first spotlight is dedicated to 4 brilliant fashion stylist’s. Name: Emma Cotterill Location: Sydney, Australia Been Styling for: 20 years Favourite part of the job? Creativity - there are no boundaries. One tool you cannot live without? My clothing rack...... Best styling moment to date? Being published on Fěn Hóng Sè’s issue 5 double covers. How did you start working as a stylist? When I lived in London my friends were all creatives and one day a makeup artist friend called me to ask if I could assist a stylist on a paid shoot? I said yes and the next day I was ironing Comme do Garçon and Yojhi for an Interview Magazine cover with Bryan Ferry! Favourite image you have collaborated on? I love every image and my favourite hasn’t been published yet! I’m always trying to create better images. INSTAGRAM: @emma_cotterill
PHOTOGRAPHER Anastasia Fua Issue 5
PHOTOGRAPHER Leila Joy Issue 5
PHOTOGRAPHER Natasha Killeen Issue 7
Name: Diego Ibaùez Location: Mexico City Been styling for: 5 years How did you start working as a Stylist? I don’t know if this will sound cliche, but one day out of boredom i grabbed a Vogue magazine and was amazed by the images inside and from that moment I decided I wanted to work as a fashion stylist. I then assisted a few stylists and from that I observed and learned how to do a fashion shoot, I worked with photographers who were starting to develop a portfolio and experience. Favourite era that you love to pull influences from? Renaissance era is my favorite inspiration, I have this feeling I lived in that era so I get super inspired by it or anything from past centuries. Who would you love to collaborate with in the future? My dream and goal is to work with Steven Meisel, lets dream and work for it. Favourite part of the job? Absolutely everything from laying down in bed and getting ideas out of nowhere, to prepping a shoot, selecting the clothes and being in an actual shoot is my favorite part. Double denim or not? Yes! I wear ir myself and actually denim is pretty much my everyday wear. INSTAGRAM: @diegoibanez2
PHOTOGRAPHER Constanza Martinez Issue 5
Name: Ntombi Moyo Location: Currently in New York but based in Melbourne, Australia. Been styling for: 8 years How did you start working as a Stylist? My background is in fashion photography, I would be on photo shoots and I would naturally start dressing the clients as I often felt that the styling was bringing down the photography and it was not complementing each other well. Describe your signature style. This is really hard to do, I am an aquarius ... forever changing, a damn chameleon if you will. I definitely dress to my mood and to anything with shine or texture in my wardrobe. I could be Marjorie Harvey in the morning and a grunge eclectic June Ambrose in the evening. Favourite era that you love to pull influences from? I love futuristic fashion, we essentially have not been there yet but I love to style towards it. Who would you love to collaborate with in the future? I recently worked with Rico Nasty, stylistically...she is someone I always looked forward to work with. I now need to set new goals but essentially I would love to work with someone really open minded, perhaps alternative and likes to push makeup and fashion boundaries.
PHOTOGRAPHERS Laura Du Ve and Zack Ahmed Issue 7
Favourite part of the job? I love the moment when the look comes together and we both admire it in unison. I dont pre-plan looks and love to freestyle on set so it is often as much of a surprise for me as it is for the client (haha, perhaps something I should keep to myself) It is always really rewarding to watch the client get excited as the creation comes together. It’s the process of building from one feature piece and building from other pieces available. INSTAGRAM: @ntombimoyo
Name: Lenard Johnston Location: New Zealand Been styling for: 4 years How did you start working as a Stylist? I come from a fashion family. It’s in the blood, but mainly because I’m a hairdresser and enter competitions a lot and the stylists could never get my vision so I started styling myself.
Describe your signature style. That’s a hard question because I don’t really have a style as I’m constantly changing and evolving but there is always an element of classic to the way I style. Favourite era that you love to pull influences from? There are many! but I would have to say 60’s, transport me back!! Favourite part of the job? Getting to create beautiful images from conception through to reality, it’s a real buzz. Sequins or Lace? Both.... but if I had to choose one, Who doesn’t love a bit of sparkle INSTAGRAM: @lenardjohnston

DENZEL MAPLE Australian-Dutch artist Denzel Maple has spent his life travelling between Europe and Australia, collecting inspiration and experiences along the way. He currently resides in Sydney’s inner west, working from a home studio to create various artworks. Below, he discusses his inspiration, style and the journey so far. My eye has never changed. From a very young age I’ve had a deep infatuation with castles, folk law, ghouls & goblins, the balance of evil and good. Anything medieval. I guess I have a romanticised view of what was, often seen through a pair of Hollywood goggles. Ever present was the interest in grandeur, the lengths that mankind is capable of, be it cathedral or catastrophe. This longing for something bigger than myself and wilder than present times has forged a never-ending desire in me to create something that will last. I take massive influence from cinema. Spike Lee and his constant progressive aggression, Tarantino’s nonchalant murders, Wes Anderson’s strangely comforting yet extremely awkward settings. Clint Eastwood’s never ending glare, the 10th helping at dinner in La Grande Bouffe and all of Peter Sellers’ faces in Dr Strangelove. Hell, A YouTube clip of James Bond introducing himself over the years, on repeat. I love moody writer’s too. Beat poet Jack Kerouac, the madman/genius of Hunter S Thompson or a beautifully troubled Hemingway. Music will always heavily influence my work. Fortunately concerts have been constant. I’ve been front and centre for the likes of James brown, Bruce Springsteen, Dr. John, Gary Clark Jr, John Cleary, Lucinda Williams, Carlos Santana, Nick Cave at the State Theatre and even Nas with a 14-piece New Orleans brass band behind him. I’ll listen to anything that’s got guts - Serge Gainsbourg to Led Zeppelin, Buena Vista Social Club to Benny Goodman, Tom Waits to John Coltrane. Locked up in my studio I am either keeping the neighbourhood awake (alive as I like to put it) or I’m plugged into audio books & rockumentaries, lost for hours or even days. Growing up with a father who has a penchant for tailored Italian suits and a mother who’s practically a female Keith Richards you tend to pick up a few habits. I never had a chance, forever doomed to live beyond my means. Naturally I’ve incorporated these tastes into my everyday life and work. Consistently dumping reality in favour of my custom made daydream like an alcoholic Peter Pan. Bangarang. I made my debut into the fashion world with a hand painted motorcycle jacket featuring the infamous Nosferatu flipping you the bird from his rickety tower. I like the idea of irritating overly reserved people with minimal effort. This is easily achieved by living in Balmain. That jacket has made its way across Australia, into editorials and over various shaped shoulders. It was created for Sydney’s Father Superior label, a custom clothing subculture commissioning one-off hand painted wares by artists for troublemakers. Since then I’ve completed 10 other jackets for various hoodlums, a charity fundraiser and my first hat collaboration with custom hatter BS_VII. These clothing projects are a great way break up the lengthy process of canvas painting.

When it comes to clothes I’ve got a few rules: Don’t be lazy, fashion favours the bold, and the better dressed you are the more you get away with. I used to want to be a detective, then I realised I just wanted a trench coat. These days my look is more undercover rock and roll businessman. Picture satin suits with very few buttons done up and adorned in jewels. Or, a long, elegant coat concealing a leather vest with painted kings being drowned in poison. Kind of like Al Capone posing with the mayor, dressed to nines with a hidden agenda. My friends say I’m either ready for a funeral or about to make a hit...
“Something stopped me in school a little bit. Anything that I’m not interested in, I can’t even feign interest.” - Quentin Tarantino Since I began I’ve always known one truth … You can never tell me what to do. That was okay to begin with, though it rapidly became a scolding point for those “in charge” of me. I considered this a character flaw for the majority of my life, up until I realised it was a blessing. This alienated me from the herd and served as a great force of insecurity up until I found my fondness in the weird and my power in the abnormal. Considering my whole life I’ve been a human sized yoyo catapulting between Sydney and Amsterdam, I’ve always had an interesting perspective. Diving deep into Art, History and Creative Writing became a coping mechanism that helped me to make sense of the world. Unbeknownst to me it would later develop into a fully fledged lifestyle. I must admit the idea of becoming an adult was enticing until it became reality.
In the words of Nick Cave: “...You’re one microscopic cog in his catastrophic plan, designed and directed by his red right hand...” Learn what you can from experiences, trust the journey and keep on trucking, for the past is for suckers.

The Gutter bible triptych: The barbed bishop The Big Nun The pyramid of Geezer This series playfully blends biblical iconography with pure hedonism, depicting old school religious figureheads as corrupt caricatures in the modern world. Clad in traditional robes with lavish adornments, they enjoy guilty vices while preaching the word of the lord. With these portraits, the artist intends to display the similarities between the church and gangster lifestyles where greed rules all.
