Editor-In-Chief Megan Quigley Special Thanks John Quigley Natasje Garbers Brooke Fowler Aaron VIII General Inquiries editor@fenhongsemagazine.com Submissions www.kavyar.com/fen-hong-se-magazine LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: 1 YEAR! What a year and we made it! It's been such an amazing whirlwind of new things: new experiences, new friends, new collaborations, new ventures, all of them fantastic! So here is my inspirational message for you for 2019: Life is short, too short to be scared of failure, to doubt yourself, to not dream big. Dream as big as you can and follow that dream with the determination and perseverance to make your dream a reality. Nothing worth doing is easy, life is hard and you have to work at it to make it what you want it to be. Be as out there and as unapologetically creative as you can be right now! I hope you enjoy this very large double issue, I've spent many hours (and a few sleepless nights) compiling these amazing creatives for you to be inspired by. From necklaces made of teeth, to a collection inspired by the romance of Italian culture, Doodad + Fandango’s colour-pop statement pieces are made to stand out and shout "FASHUN!" from the highest peak. Designer Nikita Margarita has a knack for designing pieces that you can’t help but want to in your accessories drawer. Nikita took the plunge in creating her own line, which is the plastique fantastique wearable art signature style that you see today. Read on as Nikita shed’s some light on her career as a jewellery designer. Your resume is coloured in careers in fashion design, shoe making and costume styling, when did you first realise you wanted to leave these other careers behind to pursue a career as a jewellery designer? I had a burning desire to design and make accessories for a really, really long time, but had no idea how to go about it. That sounds a bit silly now, but 15 or so years ago it was a different landscape, there was no instagram of course and starting a label seemed huge, daunting, impossible! Eventually (in 2005) I heard about the Jewellery and Object Design Adv. Dip. course offered at the Enmore Design College. I signed up immediately and it literally changed my life, I ended up studying there for 5 years learning conceptual design and silver smithing. My materials and style have changed a lot since then and even though it’s pretty much always been a struggle working in this field, I love it so much and it’s a more natural fit for me than fashion design or other disciplines. I realised somewhere along the way that while I am obsessed with fashion, I don’t care to produce it or care too much about what other people wear. However I want to smother people in my accessories! You pay homage to the bakelite and celluloid costume jewellery of the 1930’s & 50’s with the boldness of your pieces tying all of your collections together with a common thread. Can you tell us how you keep your ideas and inspiration fresh without losing your signature style? After I graduated from jewellery school I got a part-time job at Harlequin Market, which was a boutique that specialised in vintage costume jewellery. I learnt so much about the different plastics that have been used in accessories over the last 100 years and it gave me a new respect for these materials as well as an appreciation for the fun you can have in this medium. School had made me a bit of a contemporary design snob, so it was eye opening and freeing to recognise the value and beauty in these ‘non-precious’ pieces. My very first Perspex designs were inspired by a retrospective I saw of Yayoi Kusama (2009 MCA, Sydney) and my love of vintage Bakelite designs. I take originality very seriously and try my hardest not to be too influenced by other people’s designs, though at the same time I am strongly influenced by pop art and I think everyone has a right to have a bash at anything, we all have our own versions of similar ideas in us! I try not to get too caught up worrying about other people copying me, and I try to be the best designer I can, always seeking to be original and unique and true to my voice. I don’t take my inspiration from other jewellery designers, but from fashion, art history and travel.

Collaborating with other artists is a fantastic way to keep new ideas coming in, and at the end of the day I can’t help who I essentially am, a fashion addict, with a dash of tacky in me but with an unending obsession with adornment. What has been the biggest hurdle and greatest asset in getting your label up and running to the business that it is today? To be honest it can be a gruelling and an isolated life operating a small business on your own! I am constantly exhausted trying to do everything by myself. It has been a struggle every day but I am so grateful for the little successes I have had along the way that give me the motivation to keep going. I’ve never run a business before so I’m usually feeling along in the dark and often wonder if I am my own worst enemy with some of the decisions I’ve made ie. choosing to manufacture myself and not off shore. The biggest asset to my enterprise has undoubtedly been Instagram, when you don’t have money for PR social media is crucial, but my relationship with it is tenuous! Instagram are always changing things around and my business is so dependant on it now that the way they mess around with the algorithm can have a negative impact on everything. Undoubtedly a huge asset to my business are the people who seem to love what I do and not just buy my work but give me motivation with their nice comments on social media and IRL when I meet them. Without that I would fall apart from the worries and isolation. I know that’s dramatic, but working on your own is a particular type of pressure and I appreciate the positive feedback so much. D+F is stated to be a sustainable, eco-friendly label. Can you tell us a bit more about your stance on being a label that supports looking after the planet and the steps you take to ensure that your carbon footprint is minimal. I think the most significant step I have taken in my label to be low impact is to be self producing and made to order. This way I can control how the pieces are manufactured, how the waste is disposed, where all of the bits and pieces are sourced and who is making it all (me!). I don’t overproduce, I only make what people order and no one is getting exploited making it (oh, except me!). All of my acrylic waste is collected and sent for recycling, and as much as possible I try to buy my materials from local suppliers so I am supporting local businesses and most importantly I am always looking to make my pieces to a high quality so that they last. I encourage people to get in touch if anything breaks, I am SO HAPPY to repair their doodads and have never charged anyone to repair anything. I certainly have quite a bit of guilt seeing as how I do work in plastic, so to balance this out I treat these materials with the highest respect and use them in a way so that they last for a very long time, not just one silly season of fashion.

There is no denying that I love D+F and that I get excited with every new piece I see. Can you tell us what part of the design process gets you excited and motivated to keep on designing and making these wearable art marvels? I’m impatient and get easily bored but am powered by a never ending desire to create new designs. Sometimes I can despair thinking there is nothing left I can possibly turn into a doodad, and then I wake up, it’s a new day, and I have a 100 new ideas tapping on my brain! I find that hours of sitting behind a computer designing are not that rewarding, I prefer being in the studio and using my hands to create and the final step of peeling off the protective paper on a new piece to see the bright colours and crisp designs is the best moment! I also love creating images and photo shoots to showcase my work, I often have an image in my head of the final shot, I can see who’s wearing the item and how it’s been styled before it’s even a sketch. When I was a teenager in the 80’s I was o-b-s-e-s-s-e-d with fashion magazines so getting to work with other creatives to make beautiful images featuring my doodads is such a dream come true… I sometimes can’t believe it is really happening. To be a part of the visual global conversation is so exciting. What is the next step for D+F? Where would you like to see D+F head in the next year? I want to still be doing what I’m doing, and I’d love to be making enough money to employ more people in the manufacturing process. I’d love to see Doodads being sold in Japan where I know people would like my work, but it can be very hard to break into this market.

I’d like to be making the accessories for Moschino, I find the accessories they use in their runway shows soooo blah and not nearly as amazing as their clothing. I know I could do a better job, come on Jeremy Scott, hit me up!

Nikita and Sarah K Collaboration

"What we wear should not define what gender or race we are. Freedom is the philospohy here, free to be who we are, where we go and what we wear. Fashion is a form of self-expression". Tamie Anthas studied Fashion Design at Sydney's Fashion Design Studio in Ultimo up until this year and has been noticed by local stylist's and photographer's since her first year of study. Her label, DigitalKittn, is not provactive nor does it have shock value and although Tamie is aware of the current trends, both in Australia and internationally, she does not follow them. Her label has its own unique and distinctive voice that Tamie curates with style, ingenuity and with an environmental conscience. Tamie designs a kaleidoscope of unique pieces from contemporary denim street wear and luxurious kiminos, to elegant evening wear. With a strong focus on transforming old garments into new, unique re-threads, she believes up-cycling more economical and sustainble, and one of the many directions fashion should be taking. Most of the fabric for Tamie's first collection that will be shown in 2019, have come from sourcing off-cuts and end-of-roll materials from various local fashion companies, second hand stores, remnant stores and recycling centres. She wanted to have a minimal footprint in creating this collection but also show other designers what can be done with other people's trash. That discarded fabrics can be turned into modern, contemporary fashion: from trash to couture. Tamie's first collection ATOMIC SUSHI embodies modernism with curves and structure, heavily influenced with serious tailoring and technique and with the hand screen prints also injecting the playful tones of Japanese Anime. The collection is bold in colour, accented with black and white monochromes and hints of the 1990's throughout. Each piece of the collection has been created like a work of art with many points of interest in full 360 degrees. With Tamie's drive and dedication to her chosen art form, she is one designer to watch!
