Kaliver

Roni Cross is the creative force behind Australian label Kaliver. She was born & bred on the south coast of Australia & launched her label back in 2009, moving forward creating collections that are feminine yet strong and functional with a touch of elegance. After seeing her collection walk at VAMFF (which we LOVED) we contacted her to chat about Kaliver. Tell us how did the Kaliver brand come into existence & where did the name come from? Kaliver was a natural progression for me, I have loved design since a young age, and after completing a Bachelor of Design at Whitehouse in Sydney, I then went on to start Kaliver. The name Kaliver came to me when I was travelling through North America on a ski holiday. What was your biggest fear when going out & starting your own line? Will it be received well by the media and by my consumers. Without either, it can all fail. Where does your primary point of inspiration stem from for your collections? Each collection’s inspiration is drawn on from different aspects of the Universe. Generally it is closer to home; my family life, my other hobbies, and the inspiration just develops from there. Its a natural progression for me. What do you feel is unique about the fashion industry in Australia? Our climate. We are always hot in Australia, and never too cold. We get to play with lighter weight fabrics for longer than most countries. You engage in the Slow Fashion Movement by creating your collection on a Made-To-Order basis. What are some the factors of being an ethical brand that brought you to produce your line in this way? I actually read and article on the amount of waste the Australian Fashion Industry contributes to landfill annually, and it shocked me to the core. I didn’t want to see Kaliver add to this. What role do you think social media plays in fashion today? A huge role. Everything is NOW, and everything is influencer-based. If you haven’t seen an influencer wear it (and wear it organically, not seemingly paid) then it won’t sell. Social media drives that ‘need’ factor in the fashion industry. What is your favourite part about being a designer? The freedom! I get to design what I want!

Describe Kaliver in 3 words… Bold, Distinct, Playful.

SISTA Ă–F JAC believes in the conservation of natural resources through sustainable processes. They believe transparency in sustainable practice  is incredibly important as it challenges their audience to consider their own sustainability efforts. Luxury fashion does not need to cost the Earth, and they endeavour to reduce pollution, emissions and waste as a company. This ideology not only plays into their garments production, but the stories shared through their collections. Not only do they want to follow these guidelines but educate, promote and provide a voice to change the world in what we wear.

There were 2 distinct categories at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this year: those who closely followed the current trends in colour, shape & design & those who threw those trends out the window. From soft mints & neutrals to colours of hot pink, red & orange, to bold clashing prints with a touch of whimsy. Australian designers brought their A game to fashion week this year & we were not disappointed. Here are some of our favourite collections from this year.

THE SEARCH FOR

Locations IS OVER

Why you should be registered with Set Book Every photographer has the same problem; we want the coolest, cheapest and newest photoshoot locations. The biggest issue, up until now, has been the time it takes to find these locations, then of course the headache of begging for permission and negotiating pricing. Currently it takes the average photographer up to a week to find a location that fits, then another 2-3 days to negotiate rates… Let’s face it; ain’t nobody got time for that. Imagine that you could just scroll through an endless sea of locations, (each one more inspiring than the last), freeing up time to work on your mood boards and call sheets. Set Book has revolutionised the process of booking locations by doing all of the hard work for you. Each listing includes information about parking, power, and access, as well as a series of photographer oriented images so we can see what the location looks like from a photographer’s perspective. No trick lighting, no fancy editing, just accurate, beautiful images. This makes the procedure 10 times faster, as you can now see at a glance what the space looks like from every angle and what the lighting is like once inside.

You can search online by suburb, keyword or property type, so it doesn’t matter if you don’t immediately know what you want - it’s there. Set Book features locations that are useful and unique, such as Plain-Jane period houses, sweet luxury mansions and the more original properties that tend to excite and entice. Set Book has plenty of options, the most anticipated properties include caves, treehouses, Bali styled villa’s and of course the on trend ‘European Summer’ themed spaces. What’s best? They’ve done the negotiating and begging for us. Set Book has spent countless hours curating the best locations, begging the property owners to allow photoshoots and negotiating the best possible rate for the space. In the coming months Set Book will be introducing opportunities for creatives to preview spaces on ‘Rec Days’, where you are able to do mini photoshoots, explore different locations and even learn a thing or two in a weekend workshop. Set Book is currently taking preregistrations from a limited number of creatives, who will be given exclusive access to the best locations; first. If you would like to become a VIP, Queue jumper or Beta tester, register at their website before their official launch.

JAMES ORMISTON

PIZZA PEAKS

James Ormiston is a New Zealand born artist and illustrator. Through the juxtaposition of incongruous elements, he creates surreal paintings and drawings that act as single frames to a larger untold story. Since any further explanation is withheld, the viewer assigns their own story to each piece. In this way, the work explores our resistance to ambiguity and the use of narrative in providing structure and comfort. James seeks to counter the strangeness of the scenarios by rendering them in a detailed and realistic way. He now lives and works in Melbourne, and is an artist in residence at RedBubble.

MARIE LARKIN MARIE MARIELARKIN LARKIN Marie Larkin is an Australian Pop Surrealist. Her art embodies an undeniably feminine oeuvre, meticulous execution and attention to detail. Her richly coloured, painted and drawn alternate worlds, are inhabited by her signature women who imbue the works with narrative and emotional content. Women of strength and character, whose undeniable feminine force, has become her trademark. Early works in painting, drawing and sculpture were inspired by fairytale and nursery rhyme narratives, pop culture and beauty but as her work has matured and developed this has distilled into an art that is underpinned by explorations of the female persona. Her work over the past two years often attempts to show that elements of a goddess archetype are present in the everyday feminine. She seeks to help women find this within the everyday and has found that it resonates strongly with both men and women. “My women might be aloof, sad, angry, willful, sensual or sassy, but they are never weak, and they are never defeated. They are sometimes full of darkness and sometimes filled with light. They strike fear and bring hope. They can be cruel and they can be sweet. They are the ingenue and the cynic. They are the destroyers and the nurturers. They are adventurers who look forward. They face the world head on and kick its proverbial arse. They have innocence but tell a story of fierceness and wisdom. They are the devil and the goddess. I reveal their bodies but only to proclaim the character’s femaleness. My women regard and engage you with their direct gaze as if to say, “See me. I am woman.”

Sydney based electro-pop artist Florian’s musical vibes are all technicolour, splashing her tunes with 80’s influences and creating music that you get hooked on and can’t stop listening to. Inbetween her busy schedule, we had a chance sit down with her to chat and ask her a few questions. Can you tell us the origin of your stage name Florian? Florian is actually Mum’s maiden name. I’m half Fijian and all of the Florian women on that side of my family are so strong and fearless, so I thought why not pull some of that strength and fire and use it as an alter ego. Who or what are your biggest influences? I’m definitely a very visual person... if that’s a thing? I love amazing art, photography, movies and always find them super inspiring... that’s definitely a reason why I’m so drawn to the 80s because it was so amazing aesthetically, so colourful, and the music videos were epic! I always keep Pinterest up whilst I’m writing and I have this awesome view from my desk at home in Newtown where the sunsets are always so stunning - so it makes it pretty easy to feel inspired. There’s also a lot of music and bands but the list is so long we’d be here all year, haha. How has your music & career evolved since you were on The Voice back in 2016? My career has definitely changed but I think more than anything, I have evolved personally the most! The Voice was great for me because it helped me solidify what I wanted to do and lit a fire in my ass quite frankly. Congratulations on being selected as a top 40 finalist for the 2018 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition along with so many other amazing artists. Tell us about your composition process for your new single Star Crossed Lover, how did this tune come to existence? Thankyouuuu! I literally forgot I entered into the competition to be honest, but I’m obviously glad I did! It’s for charity and I just think it’s a cool process, every song gets listened to blindly (aka. they don’t know who wrote it/ sung it and that’s how the Top 40 get chosen), so I was stoked, and to be among that company is pretty surreal!! Star Crossed Lover was my first single so I’m pretty chuffed - it’s basically about two people from opposite worlds falling in love and making it work. If you could collaborate with another artist who would it be? Ahh! Alive or Dead? Dead: probably Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston .. and Alive: Robyn or Peter Gabriel What other things can we see from you in 2018? More music!! I’m so excited to just get some more tunes out there, and looking at a tour later in the year... keep your eyes peeled ;) Favourite song of all time? Ahhh too hard!! At the moment though I’m obsessed with The Preatures’ new album! Describe your music style in one sentence. Songs that make you feel something with a healthy dose of nostalgia!

With the launch of the third FATHER SUPERIOR collection we got to chat with founders Jodee & Gerard about what makes FATHER SUPERIOR different from the rest. The FATHER SUPERIOR label is the perfect mesh of wearable art & street art, gutter punk & grunge couture, can you tell us how, where & when the label was born? J: FATHER SUPERIOR was born for that very reason! we saw a lack of wearable art that worked in a high end market and we were sick of seeing fast fashion taking over, so I hit the second hand stores to find some special unique pieces for Gerard to start putting his artwork on. G: It was just before sunrise one early summers day. Jodee and myself were in a 24hr Surry Hills beer garden after one of our interesting nights. Jodee mentioned that one of my recent paintings would look good on a jacket. Followed immediately with the realisation we had just stumbled on an exciting (and actually possible) new platform. ‘Wearable art’. Melting the scolding hot wax of art and design onto the clothing industries dark stain known as ‘fast fashion’. We proceeded to layout a plan of attack with rough deadlines till launch and even conceived a name. All by the time it was normal conditions to be wearing sunglasses. FATHER SUPERIOR was ahead of the game back in 2016 when it came to sustainable fashion using vintage jackets to repurpose by hand painting them into amazing one off pieces, Can you explain how the label is evolving in 2018. J: This year sees FATHER SUPERIOR giving its followers some cheaper price point options, everything is still repurposed and still very much collaboration which is what we stand by. We have the wonderful Meredith McMaster (good friend of ours, Anthony Lister’s talented mother) who has hand made berets from used tartan and old band shirts. Jumpsuits, pants and jewellery are also some new editions to the ever growing label, with its cheaper brother brand being dubbed “Our Fathers”. G: Like the lead up to 2017 and 2016 before that, 2018 launch has been our Artist: SKEL most exciting yet. Things naturally improve with each cycle of experience. We now feel a bit more aware of what works and what doesn’t. The label is becoming a bit more itself as we grow our ideas with it. We are very proud of the product’s development and all the people involved in its upbringing. What can you tell us about the 3rd collection - We love the common thread of the UV paint used through the entire collection, where did this inspiration originate from? J: Being from a grunge and punk background it made sense to add some dance moves to Father Superior with a rave aspect. The jacket’s seem to have more of a 90s feel this year and getting the chance to have our lighting specialist John Doe back again this year with his light up jackets meant playing with glow in the dark, UV and day/night themes. We are like vampires and tend to work through the night and sleep in the day so wanted to try and normalise this through the expression of our work through the jackets. The strongest people I know are also the most fragile and we tend to need a helping hand every now and then- having a monster on your back can help bring your confidence back and remind you of your own strengths, we want this label to be a symbol of a cult vibe with good intentions- knowing someone always has your back. G: I believe, as far as the day-glo theme goes, it kinda stemmed from John Doe’s jacket in our last collection. There was something ‘next level’ about the light up aspect. So we brainstormed the idea of day and night. We thought we could run with a neon, glowing, black light theme and incorporate that with the idea of gangs, belonging to or being a member of a club. Giving the label an extra air of exclusivity and intrigue. Which Australian artists can we see featured in this collection? J: Our Australian artists are growing and this year is the best line up yet! With the legendary Ben Frost who has just done the recent campaign with Moschino with Jeremy Scott! Not to mention some of my favourite artists and best mates SKEL, Chris Delamotte, Ben Feslet, Marie Larkin, Ozzy Wright, Straker, Anthony Lister, Myself Jodee Knowles, John Doe and of course Creon, just to name a few! Describe FATHER SUPERIOR in 3 words J: forgive me father G: I have sinned

Kwan Yin XXI There is a force within us that makes us capable of the most incredible things. Beyond the strength of our muscles, our intelligence or our will, it lies within compassion. There, hidden from the eyes of the world, the power of our forgiveness make us almost invincible.

It was the compassion, embodied in the fragile and beautiful Kwan Yin,

the power that made the fierce Lion to lie on her feet. It was her love, the weapon to defeat the legendary Dragon and turning it into her loyal ally. But that fight was not to harm. It was a fight to reunite and made all the forces become one. What if that same fight is happening right now inside of each of us? Are we strong enough to fight our own beasts with love and mercy?

The legend says that Kwan Yin, deity of mercy and compassion, is the one

who listens and heal the wounds of the world. Are we listening our own wounds? Are we ready to have compassion for ourselves and fight our dragons with love? Are we ready to forgive our mistakes and be an ally to ourselves? FEN HONG SE MAGAZINE • 128
