LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: I can't believe this is issue 4! Time on this new adventure has come and gone so quickly that I feel sometimes that I've forgotten to breathe and quickly have to catch my breath. I decided to open the submissions to everyone for this issue to celebrate all talent wherever they are found in the world and I'm so happy that I did. Issue 4 brings to you some amazingly creative talents and how they see Spring. Some with soft pastels and florals, hazy moments and earthy tones and others with bright colours and holographics, all of these bringing new life after the depth of Winter. I hope you enjoy this issue as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Welcome to Issue 4: Spring's Breath

Grahl ☆
Debbies Grahl is a visual artist, award winning muralist and 2D animator born in Porto Alegre, Brazil. She grew up surrounded by painting materials and pastels from her mum who is also an artist, which had a major impact on her as a kid. In her teenage years, she felt the need to see her artworks on a larger scale, that’s when she started painting on the streets and became one of the first female graffiti artists of her city. Not long after that, she got involved with tattoo art and this combination really shaped her style as a young artist. “On my works, I often depict a whimsical, nostalgic and magical world populated by cute, dreamy and empowered women along with other creatures. I work predominantly in the medium of acrylic painting, watercolours and digital art, but mural art is also one of my passions! My style comes from a wide combination of influences... I’ve always been crazy about Japan and their kawaii culture and fashion, bold and striking outlines and colours were always my thing. I’m also just a “little bit” obsessed with vintage dolls, especially Kewpies, I really have a thing for kitsch aesthetic. I’m also a 2D animator, so another great influence for me is animated cartoons, preferably from 30’s and 90’s like the good old Disney classics such as ‘Silly Symphony’ series and some stupid-genius ones like ‘Ren&Stimpy’, ‘The Rugrats’ and ‘Cow and Chicken’. In 2012 I moved to Australia to start fresh with my husband and I found myself in the best place I could ever wish for to start a family. I’ve always dreamed about being a mum, and after my daughter was born in 2016, I kind of felt the need to reinvent myself as an artist. Motherhood gave me a whole new perspective of life and my inspirations now have a whole different meaning to me. I currently live in Sydney, Australia, where I work from my home studio and look after my little girl Joanna.”

An Interview with JUSTIN CASSIN Menswear designer Justin Cassin's show at fashion week was full of colour, fun and great design, which had us sitting on the edge of our seats waiting to see what was going to come next. We were pretty excited when we were given the opportunity to ask him a few questions. I know this is a question that everyone usually starts with but I can’t help but ask. How, when & where did you start the Justin Cassin label? Had you been working in the industry previously, has fashion always been a passion of yours or did the idea of the label come from a natural progression of wanting to find menswear that you wanted to wear but couldn’t find? Growing up, I have always been interested in fashion – I never interpreted the fashion industry as simply clothes; it can be so much more. We hear it all the time, but it is true, it can equip you with confidence as well as a new attitude and way of life. The interest and passion never faded and so it was a natural progression for me to study fashion when college came around. I studied fashion in the United States and began working in various labels after graduation, designing both womenswear and menswear. I knew I wanted to start my own label when I began to have this burning desire to provide effortless casual-sophistication garments to empower men with more choices. My initial years in the industry revealed to me that men were still being forced into a limited range of given style. Men were styled in two extremes; we were either down-right casual and borderline streetwear or interpreted formally and in versions of suit's. It became evident to me that designing menswear should never be about limiting them in a conventional category, instead it is about inspiring men by giving them a comprehensive range of fashion freedom and options to be whatever they want to be. This is a core value that underpins my brand; we provide the freedom to be everything in- between. Your MBFWA show had everyone on their feet, what was the inspiration behind the carefree, electric style of the collection and show? A few years ago, I had to take a break from my career due to an illness and after recovering from it, I realised life shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Don’t interpret this the wrong way; fashion week is a big deal, but I wanted my show to stand out and yet be relatable, and I definitely did not want this year’s show to be a mere clone of last year’s show. Individuals close to me know I am always down for a bit of fun, I have a very laid-back and carefree personality, so I wanted my own show to reflect this. For this year’s show, I just wanted the audience to have fun and walk away feeling on the top of the world, hopefully the process inspired everyone in the audience to embrace life and who they are. It turned out exactly the way I envisioned it to be and I was definitely pleased with the final turn-out. There are only a few menswear designers featured throughout MBFWA. Do you think there is a gap for Menswear in the Australian Market? Absolutely. I grew up and studied fashion in the United States so naturally a lot of individuals questioned my choice in making my fashion debut here in Australia but this is one of the main reasons as to why I ultimately decided to do so. There is a gap within menswear in every single country, but I believe particularly so in Australia. Australia’s fashion scene is very interesting, and it has certainly transformed since the days when I used to live here. Similar to its contemporary demographic and culture, its fashion scene is also like a melting pot. Another thing is that the Australian male consumers are very smart – they are not brand conscious at all. It is all about whether they like the design, if it is good quality and reasonably priced. This goes with my core beliefs very well, within all of my collections I aim for clean lines, luxurious fabrics and timeless statement pieces with simple yet effective details. When you design a collection where do you start and what inspires you? Do you have any words of wisdom for young, aspiring designers? A good way of looking at it is that each collection reflects my travels in the past six months to one year. Since I travel so much, I naturally appreciate the various experiences I gain in different countries and cultures. Most of the time I will commence my sketches immediately whilst I am still overseas – I believe it is important to ‘be in the moment’ and capture everything I can for fine- tuning later. I keep everything I sketch and bring it back with me. For SS19, I reminisced about my time in San Sebastian, the smell of La Concha Bay and the array of colours that reflected off this beautiful spot. For young aspiring designers, develop a thick a skin and understand that the art we are pursuing here is not a standard nineto-five job, it takes real time and dedication. Set your sight on what you want, ignore everything else and go after it.

You’ve mentioned that you travel regularly between New York, LA and Hong Kong, and that travelling various places is a huge inspiration for your designs and collections. How do you think the Australian market differs from these places and what is our menswear lacking in comparison? Australia lacks variety, it is always in the extremes and barely any options in-between. In New York, L.A. and Hong Kong, you see everything on all lengths of the spectrum. People like standing out there on a regular basis whereas Australia’s fashion scene is much more uniform. It is so interesting because Australia is so diverse in its culture and appreciation of different cultural arts and entertainment, much like New York, yet its menswear fashion scene is very one-dimensional. I think the answer to this goes all the way to the core lifestyle Australians aspire to which is an extremely laid-back routine and mindset but I also see that this is gradually changing. All men deserve to have a diverse range of options and to feel good about who they are through what they are wearing. The external really does influence the internal. I want my garments to help any man feel like they can take on any challenges that comes their way. What’s on your radar for the next collection? Will we see you at MBFWA next year? Our 2019 Resort collection and show attracted a lot of attention overseas so we are reviewing our options carefully because it is a very important time. We are already stocked overseas and the next step will be doing shows which I am very excited about. We recently completed our first show overseas – we had the honour of being invited and selected as the opening show for China Fashion Week and we will be actively expanding our activities in Asia and various parts of Europe in the upcoming months. In going forward, I will be focused on building the brand further by defining further what underpins the ‘Justin Cassin man’. In my mind, I have a specific vision for what the brand will ultimately become and stand for so I am taking it step by step. Each garment has a story but the story won’t tell itself if they are just inanimately sitting there on a shelf. I can’t wait to show everyone else the entire brand and what it stands for. As for Fashion Week in Australia next year, I can’t reveal too much at this stage but you can definitely expect our participation and I will also add that our team has already started the planning process and it’s going to be an even bigger and more exciting show.

Madison Rowe Madison Rowe is a Sydney based, self-taught artist who works mostly in charcoal, graphite and acrylic paint. Born in Adelaide, South Australia, she began sharing her work with the public close to five years ago when some friends at school suggested she create a Facebook page where people could find her work. Over time, Madison has grown a small and supportive following and has been able to exhibit her work in multiple group exhibitions and in local galleries/cafes. Inspired by the female form and expressions of emotion, Madison’s subject matter focuses mostly around women and their feminine nature. Colour has been her latest obsession, as she continues to brighten up the world around her each paint stroke at a time. Coming from a background of mostly greyscale pen and ink work, this current exploration of colour has taken Madison’s work down a new road. One that she is excited to explore further as she evolves as an artist. You can explore more of Madison Rowe’s work on her website or any of her social media links below.
