Australian Fashion Illustrators You’ve Just Got To Follow!
aaron favaloro “I don’t know if I should say this but I actually fell into illustration by absolute accident. I have always had a love
for fashion and illustration. Sketching all the way through my schooling years, to the dismay of my teachers as all my books were filled with little fashion sketches. This obsession eventually led me into receiving a scholarship in fashion illustration at a fashion college in Sydney, Australia which is where my love for sketching really began. At that time, there was no social media so it wasn’t even on my radar that illustration could become a career choice, illustration for me was a way to conceptualise my fashion designs prior to being made.
It wasn’t until years and years later that I posted a little sketch on Instagram of a card I quickly drew for my
brother’s anniversary. As I was running late I did the illustration with no faces, the next day I had an enquiry through Instagram asking for a personalised sketch. It blew me away, I remember that moment so clearly. I couldn’t believe someone wanted a sketch from me. The next illustration I did was of Olivier Rousteing and the Balmain ladies, Nichole Richie, and Rosie Huntington all with no faces. They reposted the illustration and since then I haven’t stopped sketching as a career. I am just so blown away by how amazing and beautiful everyone who I have meet along the way has been and how connected we all are now with Social media. If anyone would have told me years ago that people like Oprah, Gigi Hadid and Kim K would own illustrations of mine I would have laughed, I accidentally fell into my dream job and haven’t stopped pinching myself since.”

PATRICIA
MENDES “My name is Patricia Mendes and i am an illustrator based on the Gold Coast, Queensland. I began exploring my passion for illustration through fashion and went onto complete my Fashion Design Diploma at East Sydney Fashion Design College in Sydney.
I haven’t always loved what i do, my sketching has never been something i thought good enough to share or make a career out of, hence why fashion was my next best thing. It was through fashion that i evolved into what i am today. After many years of telling my children to follow their dreams, i decided i needed to lead by example and take my own advice. I followed my creative dreams also hoping to inspire others to do the same. By rediscovering my childhood passion i turned to paper and sketched, and it became apparent to me that when i sketched i felt truly proud and happy.”

Since then I’ve developed a passion for design, particularly interior, fashion and accessory design, where I focus on marrying textures and prints cohesively. Nail art is the ultimate accessory, and I work off the philosophy that more is more! I love the satisfaction of creating and completing an intricate design, but my favourite part of the process is then creating four other different designs that will work in harmony and compliment each other.” Kat of Klaws By Katya “From a young age I have always been super inspired with kawaii culture in Japan, particularly Harajuku girls & their intricate over the top nails! I think growing up in Sydney, I never really saw anything like that. I’ve always seen nail art as a way people can express themselves & I love collaborating with other people to create a unique design that incorporates their ideas with mine. When clients tell me strangers have stopped them on the street intrigued by their nails I’m fuelled with passion & motivation to work harder!” If you’re in Sydney or Melbourne & you would love to have some of their magical creations on the end of your fingertips, you can contact these fabulous ladies through their Instagram pages to book an appointment.

Melbourne based artist Charlotte Allingham is a 24 year old Wiradjuri women who grew up in Condobolin, New South Wales. Her art work is a blend of modern subcultures and occult imagery, which you can see throughout all of her works.
“I never really drew indigenous stuff until this year, I have always drawn monsters and creatures from cultures across the world and I think the biggest thing that stopped me from using my own culture was that I thought I was too white. Being a fair skinned aboriginal, gave me huge anxiety but I know who I am, and drawing these women and creatures are like a self healing, which I really want to explore more this year. I love stories, and I love creation. Character design and world building are the most rewarding things for me. It’s really exciting to see how others have made these people, given them lives within ideas, and that’s where my love for concept design came from. It’s like you are a God and all these characters and scenes are real, they take a life of their own when they are being created”.

fgi How & when did the idea of “Immi Intimates” start to take shape & come into existence? On a family holiday in early 2015, I was discussing with my husband that I couldn’t find an underwear label that was sexy but comfortable, it was either lacy and sexy, or comfortable and basic. I wanted something that would be comfortable enough for day, and sexy enough for play… if you know what I mean! I realised there was a lack of comfortable, sustainable underwear that didn’t compromise style and sex appeal. So at the end of 2017 after 2 years of product R&D, Immi Intimates was launched; comfortable, sexy, bamboo underwear. I have always had a love and knowledge of colour. My background is in advertising; I was a Print Production Manager at various Ad agencies for many years. Inspired by this love of colour, and vision for comfortable and sexy underwear, i designed my first collection ‘Garden State’. Our underwear is made from the luxuriously soft, sustainable fabric, bamboo. The collection is named after varieties of bamboo plants, like Khasia, Heavenly and Moso. It’s an array of soft beautiful hues, think blush, teal and pink, but also includes basics like, black, grey and white. How did the environmental impact of fashion become a factor while designing the sustainable Immi Range? What made this become a main influence for you & the label? I knew i would never establish any business if it had a negative impact on the world whether social or environmental. Bamboo is sustainable, and none of our images are edited or retouched to change the shape or size of our models. Furthermore, i wanted to avoid adding to the increasing world of fast fashion, so all of our intimates are designed in Australia, and hand dyed and dried in our ethical factory in Indonesia. Why underwear & why bamboo? As mentioned earlier i couldn’t find what i wanted on the market - comfortable and sexy. Also, I have always wanted to wear some sort of support with any style of top such as low back, no back or strapless. I was always hiding wide lacy bra straps, and bra backs, so I designed our Immi Bralettes to enable women to wear bras that didn’t have to be hidden. This is how our signature matte gold clasp, and matte gold hardware on bralettes was born. After researching a lot of materials, I found bamboo, which is simply divine. It is breathable, antibacterial and keeps you odour free, making it perfect for underwear. It naturally wicks moisture away from the skin, leaving you both comfortable and dry. The plant itself is amazing, it is a sustainable resource, being that it is one of the fastest growing plants in the world, it is self-regenerating and requires very little water to grow, and at the end of its life it is biodegradable. I could go on and on about it but i think you get the picture! When creating the collection, what was the main focus for you: style, longevity or sustainability? All 3! That is a really good, tough question, and for that reason i can’t choose one over the other, because when designing a range i don’t think you can have one without the other. I want to create a label, that is long lasting, that is sustainable, and that is synonymous with style. As a relatively new label, what goals have you set to grow your business in 2018? Our next intimate range will focus on floral and abstract prints, but still with loads of colour, our signature base, and contrasting trim. Think floral base + striped trims! We are also exploring other apparel... So stay tuned!

Jessica Watts works with oil paint on vintage ephemera to explore stereotypes relating to feminine identity. Through the years she has amassed all sorts of printed matter which she revives in her artwork. Her collection of 1940s wallpaper is the inspiration for her popular series of work “Wallflower”. “This series is about feminine power, but it’s not about sexual power: I wanted to see what happens to feminine identity when you strip away the male gaze. So much of our identities as women are tied to a male perspective of ourselves. The work is an attempt to reclaim femininity as something that can exist without searching for relevance or asking permission” Jessica received a Bachelor of Design with Honours and the University Medal from UTS before working as an award winning art director for over a decade in New York, She has been a full time artist since 2010, working from her studio in North Head Sydney. Her most recent solo show was in March 2017 at the prestigious Bunkamura Gallery in Tokyo. Jessica also exhibits regularly at Sydney Road Gallery in Seaforth, NSW.

SONS OF THE EAST
Sydney bred, Indie music trio Sons of the East are about to embark on a US tour but before they do we had the chance to sit down and have a chat with them and ask a few questions, these are their answers. Sons Of The East: What’s the story behind the name and how did you guys meet? The name comes from a very obscure and long winded Lord of the Rings reference which doesn’t really make much sense, but at the time we thought the name sounded cool and henceforth it stuck. Dan and I (Jack) met in kindergarten and had been going to School and University together since. Dan played AFL with Nic in their youth and one day we decided to all ‘jam out’ together. It didn’t sound half bad to us so we though ‘f@%k it, lets be a band.’
Who or what are your biggest influences? We all come from an eclectic mix of musical upbringings, but there are a few similarities that our parents all dropped on us. Bands like Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, and Creedance Clearwater Revival are all bands that we grew up soaking in. If you listen hard enough you can see a little peppering from all these groups in our music. What’s your songwriting process? Lyrics or music first? Theres no real definite process, its always changing. Sometimes someone will come up with a chord progression, or a cool phrase to write a song around. We think its good this way, it means theres always something different to write off and nothing is ever really sounding the same. In the case of our song ‘Lost Cause’ it started from Dan thinking it was a cool phrase and we should write around it. From there, our song ‘Lost Cause’ was born. How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together? Its definitely matured and expanded. We aren’t afraid to experiment anymore with different sounds and rhythms, whereas when we were younger we were very nervous about moving to far out the box. These days we’re scaling the outside of the box’s walls, toeing the line between what we know and greater expanse outside. With your national “Lost Cause” tour back in September 2017 & heading to the US to go on tour untill the end of March, can you tell us what’s the craziest, memorable thing that has happened on tour? We were playing at a festival in Southern NSW when the crowd rushed the stage for our last song ‘Hold On.’ Its a bit of a boot stomper and we had maybe 100 people on there jumping up and down at the same time. The stage began to bend and well, you can go on our instagram to check it out. What can we see from the Sons Of The East in 2018? Many - a - fun things. We’re off to SXSW in Austin, Texas in March, and running around the US for a promotional tour. Then we will be returning and releasing new music and touring AUS. Then a few more things but thats for us to know and you to find out ;) Describe your music style in one sentence. Tear Jerkers and Boot Stompers.

RUSHING HOUR
“The World doesn’t need another fast fashion label. It needs a label that reminds us that the importance of slow fashion is about quality and self esteem, one that gives back to society, one that makes the World a better place, helps you contribute a small step to the giant leap forward that is possible for human kind.” From the very start, The Rushing Hour CEO and Designer, Jacalin was committed to innovation and humanity. The Rushing Hour doesn’t believe fashion that gets replaced every season is “Good Design”, but rather making quality garments that last season after season, with a sustainable and transparent process. Over the last 12 months Jacalin has searched for the right manufacturing partner, one that can live & breathe The Rushing Hour’s environmental and ethical beliefs. While ethical production for the label is a must, this part is only 10% of the full supply chain and they want to ensure the other 90% of the production is sustainable: from fabric farming through to closing the recycling gap. They have found their match in Yantai, North East of China with a manufacturer that has collaborated with international ethical fashion labels across the USA, Europe, Australian and New Zealand. They specialise in sourcing some of the most environmental friendly fibres, spin the highest quality yard and knit as well as investing heavily in recycling technologies and currently 80% of the factory’s energy consumption is renewable! They produce 70% of The Rushing Hour’s organic and recycled fabrics while the other 30% The Rushing Hour rescues from designer deadstock before they go to landfill. If you don’t already love the ethos of Jacalin and The Rushing Hour and want to open your web browser and shop up a storm, here is another bit of information that will make you love them even more. One of the key business values of The Rushing Hour is to embrace equality by investing in education for girls, helping to provide the first step to end poverty. For every item sold, they fund one girl’s education for a month in West Africa. They believe when a girl is educated, she becomes a woman with vision. So not only does The Rushing Hour create earth friendly clothing but also helps change another’s life with the gift of education. otis chamberlain
Otis Chamberlain a New Zealand-born painter, illustrator and muralist who has recently returned to Wellington after 10 years abroad in Melbourne and San Francisco. He grew up with skateboarding, comics, bands, and dreamers and have always felt the urge to create. He has pursued this path for over twenty years and still considers himself a student. He employs both analog and digital mediums and gravitate towards breathing line-work, concept and character design, science and scifi themes, mythology and instances of transformation. He enjoys the escapism and transportive nature of art (as an appreciator) and tries to imbue this into his own practice. His work is often a search to reconcile opposites; the simple and the complex, reason and intuition, precision and mess, the known and the unfamiliar.
