AusOcean Location: Maslin beach, SA Year: Sem 2 Experiential studio 2022
The AusOcean Studio is engaged in the design and finalization of a new 200-square-meter laboratory, workshop, and office building for AusOcean, a nonprofit ocean research organization located in Maslin Beach. This collaborative project involves AusOcean, professional planners, and members of the South Australian School of the Built Environment (SABE), including both staff and students. The primary objective is to gain practical experience by working on a local project and to develop a comprehensive construction drawing set for the professional planning application. The design concept draws inspiration from the dynamic forms of ocean waves, reflected in the building’s architecture, color scheme, 18
and materials. The spatial organization is carefully planned to accommodate the client’s needs. Garage and workshop areas are situated together for operational efficiency, while office and multiuse spaces are adjacent for accessibility. Importantly, each section of the building offers seafacing views, creating an inside-out connection with the beautiful Maslin Beach surroundings. This project aims to provide an excellent example of how thoughtful design can blend seamlessly with the natural environment and meet the practical needs of a growing nonprofit organization.
