A note from Fig
When I moved from Pennsylvania to South Carolina nearly two years ago, I came looking for a sense of community and connection. My husband and I relocated for his job, and the prospect of a brandnew place with no prior roots felt exciting and in some ways daunting. One weekend, while browsing through the shops along Devine Street I came across an issue of Fig magazine. I took it home with me, flipped through the pages, and a road map to so many wonderful businesses in Columbia appeared before me. I was re-energized by how many places I now had on my list to explore and experience, and beyond that, I was excited that there were organizations dedicated to supporting and showcasing the thriving local business community around us.
I am incredibly grateful to the ByFarr Design House team, the ones that produce Fig Columbia, for the opportunity to now be on the other side of the very magazine that welcomed my husband and I to Soda City. This past year has introduced me to so many talented and determined business owners. It has been an experience that I
have cherished at every step, and I look forward to continuing my exploration of our city alongside our talented Fig team, our local businesses, and the neighbors in this community.
The close of 2022 and beginning of 2023 is a bittersweet time—We’re looking back on all that the year has held for us and looking forward to all that is to come, celebrating both with equal happiness and cheer. We’re raising our glass to another year of making memories with family and friends, of business wins and successes, of new creatives and talents that have made their mark on our city. We anticipate the holiday get togethers, the festive family traditions, and the annual events that make us feel like every bit of the air arounds us contains magic. Most importantly, we celebrate the City of Columbia, the place that brings us all together, no matter our background, and allows us the opportunity to do what we truly love.

Ace Glass is a family affair, but that doesn’t just apply to the Price family who are the owners and operators. At this small business, the employees are a part of the family as well. Comfortable, elevated living
Make Devine Street yours at one of many properties operated by Estates Management Company. Each offers incredible amenities to provide residents with a luxury living experience that can't be found elsewhere. The beautiful living spaces, fully equipped kitchens, controlled access entries, and convenient parking are just a few of the features that you'll enjoy at an Estates home. But perhaps the most exciting aspect of it all is the opportunity to experience downtown living in Columbia's most sought-after neighborhood. Fabulous views, access to the best shopping and dining, and community gathering places to connect with friends and family await at Trolley, 700 Woodrow, Devine District, The Green, and The Cottages at Devine District.
Estates Management Company strives to create comfortable yet elevated living experiences for its residents. They continue to grow this initiative as they develop brand-new spaces. The Green at Devine District is one such project, slated to open in 2023 and designed to mirror and expand upon the live, play, work environment already found at The Devine District. By adding two retail spaces for a sandwich shop and a bakery, one luxury apartment, and outdoor entertainment and dining spaces, residents of the Devine Street community will benefit from the quaint ambiance and extra amenities here. Soon you'll be able to enjoy award-winning baked treats from Ally & Eloise Bakeshop and delicious bagel sandwiches from Sully's Steamers right at The Green!
Another exciting upcoming project is The Cottages at Devine District, which like The Green, will open in 2023. These new homes are designed for walkability thanks to their convenient location at the corner of Lee and Maple streets in the desirable Historic Shandon neighborhood. With stainless appliances, high-end finishes, and plenty of living space, these 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath for-lease homes will provide tenants with a luxury living experience. And with the close proximity to the abundant amenities available at the Devine District, these spaces are truly exceptional.
Let the celebration begin
To you and each guest you host, every event is a chance to gather together and raise your glasses in a toast to the cause, the couple, or the celebration. It’s a date on the calendar that you’ve circled and counted down the days in anticipation, and when it passes, it likely becomes a fond memory that you love to recollect.
But to the vendors and teams behind the event, it’s more than simply a gathering of friends and family. It’s thoughtfully selecting a menu that will reflect and enhance the theme of the evening, and one that takes into consideration your favorite flavors and desire to source as many local ingredients as possible. It’s being in the right spot at the right time to capture a precious, timeless moment that is there but only for a fleeting moment. It’s the styling and arranging of florals that don’t overwhelm, but set the backdrop for a day full of enchantment. It’s a curated collection of stunning gowns that are sure to make a bride feel her most confident and beautiful, and the unparalleled service that makes her feel like the only client in the boutique. It’s the pulling together of every last detail to bring to life a flawless event that appears effortless.
All of these local businesses—event planners to caterers, photographers, florists, and beyond—take immense pride in being able to pull off the impossible for you and your guests. They allow you to truly step back and celebrate with everyone that has gathered together for the event. After all, isn’t that what you want to do at each event you host?
Let’s help our small business community thrive and grow this year by shopping local throughout the holiday season. They’ve created a shopping experience just for us to enjoy!

For the Culture Vulture
With several award-winning attractions and public art around every corner, the culture is hard to miss in the heart of SC. For the Adventure-Seeker
River Runner in the Vista is the perfect spot for those obsessed with our city’s lakes and rivers. In addition to paddle boards and kayaks they offer essential outdoor clothing and accessories. Hostess with the Mostess
Head to Saluda Avenue in Five Points for The Gourmet Shop’s gorgeous array of Vietri or Hester
& Cook platters and serving pieces or that perfect bottle of wine. While in the district, stop by Gibson’s for gifts from luxe candles to unique tea towels, soaps and stationery.

For the Accessory Magnet
Head to Soda City Market on Saturdays from 9 am –1 pm on Main Street and you’ll be hard-pressed not to find some handmade jewelry, trendy bags and wallets, and even accessories for the doggos. Look out for local favorites like Carolina Clutches and Nana by Sally.

For the New Homeowner
Nothing cozies up bare shelves like a stack of books. Craft an artful selection from Ed’s Editions in West Columbia or Odd Bird Books in the Arcade Building and tie them up with a pretty ribbon. Find all kinds of homey knick knacks at home boutiques like Blush in Lexington or The Little Green Door.
The gift of local
A stack of gift boxes beautifully wrapped and tied off with ribbons on top is ready to be picked up by a customer. A flurry of shoppers is greeted personally by the shop owner as they walk through the doors. An overflowing donation jar ready to be delivered to a local nonprofit has another dollar dropped in at checkout. A selection of presents that have been thoughtfully sourced are all throughout the store, waiting for you to shop.
There’s nothing quite like shopping local during the holidays. It’s personal on so many levels.
If you’ve been a reader of Fig Columbia for any length of time, you know that we’re passionate advocates for local, and never more so than we are during the winter months. It’s a big time of year for the small businesses in our community. They’re working overtime to bring magic to their stores that you can share with your loved ones. And when January rolls around, they’re looking around empty shops, praying for customers to come back in after their holiday spending sprees to continue to support their small business.
Did you know? Shopping local keeps our local economy thriving for a host of reasons. For every $100 spent at a locally owned store, $73 stays here in our community compared to the $43 that stays when you shop at a chain. These businesses, in turn, invest back into our community through nonprofit donations. In fact, small businesses support nonprofits up to 250% more than large ones do! They also provide jobs—and mentorships—for high school and college students. Beyond the support that they provide, they also intimately know their clientele, and have stocked their shops with unique items they know you’ll love.
Let’s help our small business community thrive and grow this year by shopping local throughout the holiday season. They’ve created a shopping experience just for us to enjoy!

Authentic Josh Cox
There is a remarkable moment that happens when we uncover a true passion that is destined to make an impact in our lives and the lives of others. For Josh Cox, founder of Bricker and Beam, it started as a young boy on his grandfather’s farm, located on Bricker Hill in northeastern Ohio. Over many summers at the farm, alongside days of driving tractors, chopping firewood, and felling trees, Josh’s grandfather introduced him to the basics of woodworking.
Josh was hooked from the very start. His passion for the craft of woodworking continued to develop, as did his skills. Shortly after his graduation from the University of South Carolina, Josh decided to turn his passion into a business. In 2013, Bricker and Beam got its start out of a small garage, selling cutting boards and one-off tables and accent pieces. His first commercial job came in the form of crafting all new tables for the patio at local Columbia restaurant, Motor Supply Bistro.
Nearly 10 years later, you can find Bricker and Beam custom pieces in iconic Columbia restaurants and businesses such as Hendrix, Terra, Hotel Trundle, and more. And a short stroll through their 8,000 square foot warehouse in Columbia, will lead you past pieces awaiting shipment to destinations across the U.S. including New York, Colorado, Maryland, and even the Bahamas.
While many of the projects and designs that Josh and his team bring to life for clients are custom pieces of work, the Bricker and Beam team also offers a stunning line up of free-standing furniture pieces which includes dining room tables, coffee tables, desks, cabinets, and more. Regardless of the project or the scope, Josh’s main focus is on the customer experience.
“The most important thing for me is to connect with people on a human level,” said Josh. “Furniture is a way that I can bring people joy and it is an opportunity for me to do what I love, while fulfilling the needs of others.”
In a time where quality can take a back seat in favor of mass manufacturing, Josh knows that his pieces are enjoyed by people in meaningful ways, and they’re often centerpieces to new memories. Gathering around the dining room table. Studying for their masters degree at a handcrafted desk. Filling cabinets with items collected on travels or heirlooms passed down. The meaningful end use of his projects fuels his desire to always produce the highest quality piece.
In the back corner of the warehouse there sits a pile of wooden planks. While they aren’t cuts from the tallest or rarest tree in the Pacific Northwest or the mountains of North Carolina, they are undeniably priceless, as they came from Josh’s grandfather’s farm on Bricker Hill. These pieces are soon to become a part of Josh’s forever home here in Columbia, and will continue to be a part of an unbelievable legacy, one that reminds us to celebrate where we’ve come from and the new memories yet to be made.

Breathing new life into Columbia
Pictured here: inside the former Rosewood Church sanctuary, now a two-story, one bedroom apartment at 5 th & SloanCason Development Group started in 2015 with a primary goal to add value to every project they are involved in. The company started right here in downtown Columbia because the team truly has a heart for our city and the surrounding areas. Whether working with a small local business or a Fortune 100 company, they carry out each objective with intentionality, efficiency, and diligence. Clients and communities both benefit from excellent real estate development when Cason Development Group is involved.
The company has long been known for local projects such as the development of Cottontown (Warmouth and Indah Coffee). They also work with national retailers including Starbucks, Taco Bell, Burger King, Sherwin Williams, Express Oil, and Bojangles. Most recently, they’ve ventured into the realm of mixed-use urban developments primarily in the Midlands. They recently completed the 5 th & Sloan project at the former Rosewood Church, where they redeveloped the old building and made new additions, seeking to add vibrancy to the Rosewood neighborhood. The combination of 52 high-end apartments and multiple retailers will bring the area a fresh sense of community.
Another segment of their foray into residential property development is a partnership with Cohn Construction at 1813 Main. This historic renovation breathes new life into Main Street with a complete transformation of the old Klondike Building. On the exterior, a return to the once-prominent midcentury modern style is in order as the façade is restored to the building’s original white glossy brick and black stone. It has sat vacant for many years, but the offices on the inside have been transformed into 28 apartment units with additional retail space. Both the 1813 Main and 5 th & Sloan apartment complexes are available for lease. It’s clear to see that the CDG team is working hard to help Columbia become the best city it can be!
‘Tis the season for giving!
This time of year is all about spreading joy—not just to your loved ones, but to all those around you. Allow your spirit of generosity to extend towards the community by showing some support for a local nonprofit. Donating time, money, or items is a beautiful way to give back to one of the Midlands’ many nonprofit organizations that do so much to help our neighbors. With your help, these organizations can continue to grow, thrive, and make a difference in Columbia.
While donations are clearly helpful for nonprofits and communities as a whole, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. When you give, you’ll reap some incredible benefits for yourself. Studies have shown that when you donate, a pleasure center is activated in your brain, giving you a major mood-boost. It looks like it really is better to give than to receive! Additionally, you’ll earn a tax deduction by giving to a tax-exempt organization. Promote your mental health, lighten your tax burden, and help others in need all in one fell swoop? That’s the power of giving!
Browse the following pages to explore local nonprofits that could use your support, and consider getting involved in the transformation of our community.
Be the reason that others shine in 2023 by making a donation to Camp Cole—Every dollar makes a lasting impact on a camper.
Let their light shine
Camp Cole is a place where campers can be kids, or simply young at heart, as they have the opportunity to experience a traditional camp setting and forget about, if only for a week, the hardships they face in their daily lives. One program offered, Camp Impact, serves children from low income families, including those who are currently homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, at no cost to the campers’ families. Over the course of the week, they get to enjoy boating, fishing, arts and crafts, a horsemanship program, waterslides, campfires, dances, and more that inspire not just hope, but confidence, too.

Social Mission Able South Carolina
A key component of the Able South Carolina mission is to equip people with disabilities with tools to foster pride and to direct their own lives. There is no better time to begin building that foundation of confidence than at a young age.
As a person with disabilities approaches the age of 18, the discussion of guardianship will often happen between parents, educators, and medical providers. Guardianship is a legal process that transfers decision-making away from the individual and into the hands of an assigned guardian. Under guardianship, a person with disabilities is restricted from making important decisions about their life including employment, healthcare, voting, marriage, family decisions, and more.
Since its establishment, Able South Carolina has been a firm believer in the Independent Living philosophy, championing for individuals with disabilities to have the unwavering right to make decisions about their own lives and to take control over the interests, passions, beliefs, and values that mean the most to them.
In an effort to educate parents, professionals, and young individuals with disabilities about the alternatives to guardianship, Able South Carolina, alongside The Arc of South Carolina, Family Connection of South Carolina, and Disability Rights South Carolina have developed The SC Supported Decision Making Project. Supported Decision Making is recognized as an alternative to legal guardianship in which people with disabilities are
allowed to choose “supporters” to assist with different aspects of their lives, and seek help and guidance in the areas needed, while being allowed to thrive and grow independently in other areas.
Able South Carolina offers several programs, both in person and virtually, that are designed to provide youth with disabilities, ages 13-28, with support, guidance, and community. Their Equip program is a peer-topeer young adult leadership group that encourages exploration and empowerment in their interests and passions and provides a supportive environment to cultivate their own unique voice and self-advocacy.
Their in-school programs, such as CareerBOOST Capable and Ready! work with students with disabilities as they prepare for life after high school. They offer guidance and assistance with college preparation as well as employment opportunities, so that students are aware of their options and have the confidence needed as they take the next step into adulthood.
From further education, to employment, family matters, and personal interests, Able South Carolina believes that every individual with a disability should be given the tools, support, and ultimately, the open runway to live the life that they dream of. And every young individual living with a disability should grow up with the belief that they can be and do anything that they desire.

A commitment to giving back
Blazon owners, Chris and Jenn Stanford, have lived their lives and modeled their business after wise words shared with them from their mentors: “It’s always about the people. Always. And while you must make a profit to give back, it is the impact on others that should be the guiding light.”
At Blazon, Chris and Jenn put their team first and along with their team, they have continually looked for ways to give back to their community. This has been their way of life for years, and they never imagined that one day it would be their family that would be impacted by the generosity of others. In August 2021, Chris and Jenn’s oldest son, Julian, was involved in a car accident that severely damaged his spine and changed the Stanford family’s life forever. The family immediately felt the love, support, and care from their community and beyond
as friends, new and old, stepped up to be a resource of light and hope.
Today, one of the many ways that the Stanford family and Blazon give back to the community is through raising awareness about spinal injuries and donating funds to research to improve recovery. There is no cure and this type of life altering injury has a high impact on individuals and families. It has deeply affected their son’s life, and both Chris and Jenn are passionate about the research to improve the lives of those affected by spinal injuries.

Mentoring...how
Hammering hope home
Home Works of America raises up our community, one roof at a time. The improvement goes beyond securing a homeowner’s house for years to come thanks to much needed repairs—it extends to the team of volunteers who learn new skills and gain an appreciation of community service; to the surrounding neighborhood when home values go up due to a dilapidated house being repaired; and even reaches the health of the community when citizens have healthy, stable houses to call home.
Learn more about how you can become a volunteer and how your donations are used by visiting homeworksofamerica.org.

Spotlight: # CreatorsWanted Tour at Nephron Nitrile
SOUTH CAROLINA’S MOTTO, Animis Opibusque Parati, is one that can be easily applied to the work that Nephron Pharmaceuticals and its CEO, Lou Kennedy, do for our community and state.
The motto means: Prepared in mind and resources.
Nephron, already well known for their manufacturing capabilities as they produce life-saving inhalation products and sterile pre-filled medications, is a wealth of resources. Soon, they’ll also be opening the doors to their new medical-grade nitrile gloves production facility, which will provide Americanmade gloves for the healthcare industry to use called Nephron Nitrile. Providing
resources is one thing that Nephron does exceptionally well, and under the leadership of Kennedy, the company is also preparing minds for the future of manufacturing.
Across the U.S., there are over 800,000 positions in the manufacturing industry open and waiting to be filled by the right person. This is on top of another 12.9 million that are currently filled. An abundance of careers and bright futures await those who seek them, and Kennedy is excited to share her passion for manufacturing with young minds in local school districts.
Nephron celebrated National Manufacturing Day on Friday, October 7th, alongside industry professionals,
political leaders, and over 700 students and teachers from 13 local elementary, middle, and high schools with a stop from the Creators Wanted tour.
The Creators Wanted campaign was started by the National Association of Manufacturers and the Manufacturing Institute, and is a year-round effort designed to inspire and encourage students to seek professions in the manufacturing industry. It showcases not only how exciting and creative the industry is, but it also demonstrates how rewarding the career path can be. The goal is to continue to build a workforce so that manufacturing thrives in our country for generations to come.
“This industry is not what manufacturing used to be,” said Kennedy. “This is modern tech at its best. It’s powered by the creativity, innovation, and energy that comes along when young people, just like you, bring fresh faces, fresh ideas, and fresh voices to the table. That’s how we change the way business is done in this industry and it is thriving.”
U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn headlined this year’s National Manufacturing Day celebration and he shared his excitement for the industry’s future.
“There is a manufacturing boom taking place all over the country,” said Clyburn. “We have seen the headlines
that are with us today. Most recently, what is happening to manufacturing. We in Congress are doing what we can to help—we want to make more things right here in America. There are manufacturing jobs growing by leaps and bounds throughout the country and we are doing what is necessary to make sure South Carolina benefits from all of that.”
Clyburn, who originally started his career out as a high school teacher in Charleston, has a deep appreciation for teachers and all that they do to prepare the minds of children.
“We are being challenged to make sure that these young people are prepared
in mind and resources, as our second state motto says,” said Clyburn. “I want each and every one of you, as you go throughout your studies, to prepare yourself for whatever your dreams and aspirations might be. Whatever it is, you do your part and do it well. And to the rest of us, let me just say: Let’s do our part to make sure that this great state of ours lives up to its responsibility to fulfill that motto, to prepare these young people in mind and resources. That’s why we’re here today celebrating National Manufacturing Day!”
