A NOTE FROM FIG
Ushering in fall. What a magical season we are entering here in Aiken! The lights have been strung up in all of the trees, the local boutiques and shops have curated exceptional shopping experiences for us all, and our families are beginning to gather everywhere from our homes to our local event venues. The winter chill doesn’t faze us—we’re all filled with an abundance of hope, warmth, and gratitude as we gift with love and give with full hearts. For me, this season is enchanting. I love seeing the wonder and joy in my little girls’ eyes as they discover the beauty that comes with winter. It’s the time of year when Aiken steps out of the pages of a childhood storybook. Where else can you line the streets of downtown to celebrate horses and fourlegged friends alike as they parade in holiday regalia in the annual Hoofbeats and Carols Christmas Parade, ring in the New Year in true southern flare, or share an exceptional meal with your significant other? There are truly special people in Aiken who help bring the holidays to life for us to enjoy. Within the pages of this issue, you’ll be invited into the wonderful world of holiday gifting, giving, decorating, and planning, and even through the front doors of our state into the South Carolina Governor’s Mansion. We’re grateful for these entrepreneurs,
makers, creatives, and those in our community who have linked arms with us to make Fig Aiken possible this year—it’s small business supporting small business at its finest, and we’re appreciative of every hand that has made our first three issues possible. Let the local businesses in Aiken know how much you appreciate them this season. Shop with your favorite stores on Small Business Saturday, purchase your gifts during the extended and special hours they’re offering in December, and let them know that you’re thankful they’re here in Aiken. We know we are. May your days be bright, ERIN TRUITT & THE FIG AIKEN TEAM

B E H I N D T H E S TAT E LY W R O U G H T I R O N G AT E near the corner of Lincoln and Laurel Streets in downtown Columbia, you’ll find the last remaining building of the Arsenal Military Academy sitting on 9 acres of land alongside two beautiful Antebellum homes. Built in 1855, the building served as barracks for the officers of the Academy until the Civil War began. The soldiers returned after the Civil War to find their Academy in ruins after having been burned by General Sherman’s army. The building, along with the two homes, had been spared and after the war, it was converted into the Governor’s Mansion. 150 years later, the Governor’s Mansion stands firm on top of Arsenal Hill in downtown Columbia and it’s where Governor Henry McMaster and First Lady Peggy McMaster call home. “This house is a happy place,” Governor Henry McMaster said. “It’s full of fascinating history, furniture, portraits, and the history of our state. Did you know that there’s people who’ve lived in our state their whole life and have never set foot in the Governor’s Mansion before? We want to change that. This is the front door to our state and we want everyone who visits to be comfortable and pleased with their time here, and to see that South Carolina is the prettiest state in the world.” This year, Governor McMaster and First Lady Peggy McMaster will continue the tradition of welcoming guests for their Holiday Open House. They will open the front doors and invite our community in to see the history, tradition, and beauty that’s found within the walls of the Governor’s Mansion. “The Columbia Garden Club does the decorating,” First Lady McMaster said. “They’re decorating elves, and they arrive the Monday after Thanksgiving to spend the week decorating.”

Each December, generous members of our community become “Guardian Angels” and step up to help Children’s Place raise funds for their annual shopping trip for the kids. The community’s tax-deductible donations help to fund the purchase of basic necessities like new clothing, coats, underwear, socks, and shoes for children in need who have experienced trauma, abuse, neglect, toxic stress, or other adverse childhood experiences.
Social Mission: Children’s Place, Inc. At Fig, we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions— one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. For our 2019 Social Mission partner, we’ve chosen Children’s Place, Inc., an impactful non-profit whose good works contribute immensely to our thriving, local community.

Whether you choose to adopt a new pet for your family, make a donation to our Aiken County Animal Shelter, or volunteer with FOTAS, your generosity can give life to a dog or cat in their care.
Local schools are encouraged to form their own Junior FOTAS Club like the one at Tall Pines Stem Academy, pictured.
Giving the gift of life for 10 years Ten years ago, the situation and the conditions at the Aiken County Animal Shelter were abysmal. The shelter took in thousands of animals every year and only had the support and capacity to save 9% of them—the remaining 91% were euthanized. In the decade since 2009, the numbers have more than reversed with the shelter finding homes for 94% of the adoptable, healthy, and treatable pets. What changed? “If anyone had told me then that I would get involved in the animal shelter and in an organization like Friends of the Animal Shelter (FOTAS), I would have told them that they were crazy,” said Jennifer Miller, a founder of FOTAS and current
president. “But we couldn’t do it without the community. We definitely did not do it, and could not do it, on our own.”
accumulated over the last decade thanks to the 300+ FOTAS volunteers and the support of our Aiken community.
FOTAS started small with a pancake breakfast where they began to raise money to purchase supplies for the shelter. The movement gained momentum throughout the year as they recruited volunteers to walk the dogs, help the shelter staff, and to foster litters of puppies. FOTAS volunteers were soon lobbying the county government for the funds to build the new, modern shelter that was better equipped to meet the needs of the animals in the shelter’s care.
FOTAS is a recipient of the S.C. Secretary of State Angel Award – one of ten organizations recognized each year representing the most efficient & effective charities soliciting in S.C. FOTAS’ future goal for the shelter is that it should be a resource for pets, not a destination.
Everywhere that you look today, you can see the collaboration and effort that has
