B E T H L E H E M WA S F O U N D E D O N A C U LT U R E O F M A K E R S . The Moravians who settled here in 1741 built it with tools crafted in the Smithy that still stands in the Colonial Industrial Quarter, and their arts and crafts are preserved in historic homes and museums today. The steel stacks that look over Bethlehem are a powerful reminder of our great history of making. Massive or tiny, forged, sewn, or sculpted—Bethlehem has always welcomed makers and innovators who continuously imagine and re-imagine our city and the world at large.

Today, Bethlehem enjoys a rich and exciting diversity of makers, and we celebrate them in this issue. We have makers of things: designers, woodworkers, jewelry and furniture makers; artisan chefs, brewers, distillers, bakers, and roasters; visual artists, printers and painters, glassblowers, pottery makers, and photographers. We have makers of experiences: listening rooms and music venues where we hear our favorite local bands, choirs, and musical ensembles of every size and genre; theatres and playhouses and acting troupes that invite us into the stories they weave before our eyes. No matter your skill level or age, you can paint with friends, learn to play an instrument, take a DIY crafts class, or make your own guitar (really!). The list is blissfully long.

A NOTE FROM FIG

A City of Makers

At Fig, we are makers too. We make Fig for you—the reader. We make it so you can see Bethlehem in all its glory. We make it so businesses can show you their mission, the things they make, and the services they provide. Most of all, we make Fig because we believe that living out our mission of lifting up small businesses makes a difference. On the following pages, Fig is pleased to showcase many of the makers in and around our creative city. Be sure to turn to the special section in the center of this book that introduces you to a few of them up close and personal. As Bethlehem continues to welcome and celebrate a maker mindset, we reap the benefits of a city brimming and alive with inventive and innovative opportunities and experiences that enrich us all. GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.

Giving Back: Anna Russell ANNA RUSSELL, DIRECTOR OF M A K E A R T LO C A L : A B E T H L E H E M D O C U M E N TA RY, initially came to Bethlehem three years ago to work with Touchstone Theatre in a performing and creative apprenticeship. That’s where she met Doug Roysdon, head of Mock Turtle Marionette Theater, who, for years, has been exploring ideas about what makes a mission-driven, sustainable arts community. Since then, with support from Lehigh University’s Mellon Digital Humanities Initiative, dozens of hours of interviews have been conducted by Doug, Anna, and their team. And, fueled by individual contributions, their summer Kickstarter campaign successfully raised thousands of dollars to move on to the project’s next phase. The documentary will celebrate and investigate the history and future of grassroots art in Bethlehem. What makes a sustainable arts community? How do you nurture and grow it? How do we build ourselves and our identity so that it lasts beyond just one project? “It’s been inspiring to listen to a lot of artists’ stories,” Anna says. “There was a real burgeoning of arts activities in Bethlehem during the decline of the steel industry.” Eventually the team wants to tour the documentary nationally, because the point of focusing on this kind of art-making by a locally-grown, grassroots arts scene is that it can happen anywhere—and others can learn from what’s happened in Bethlehem. “I think there’s a lot of pride in an arts community that feels like it cared for this place,” Anna says, “that it took this place to where it is now.”

stop on the music scene in and around Bethlehem. There are some notable live music events to keep the party going well into the fall, and this quarter’s Fig Voices column from Lehigh Valley Underground exists to tell you about them.

Coming up on Sept. 22–24 is the Celtic Cultural Alliance’s 30th Annual Celtic Classic, taking place at the intersection of Main and Spring Streets in Bethlehem. Each year, the Celtic Classic features some of the nation’s most acclaimed and popular Celtic performers, with 2017’s lineup set to include Blackwater, Burning Bridget Cleary, Calan, Seamus Kennedy, and many more. The festival also features Celtic fare, vendors,

and a series of competitions, including the Haggis Bowl haggis eating contest, and the popular U.S. National Highland Games Championship. (celticfest.org) The following weekend, travel just down the road to Allentown’s Cedar Beach for Allentown ArtsFest, a free-admission, threeday festival featuring more than 30 musical performances. Allentown ArtsFest will also showcase exhibits and demonstrations featuring visual arts, film, comedy, and technology, alongside local food, beer, and craft vendors. (allentownartsfest.com) Finally, Lehigh Valley Underground is excited to get in on a fun and exciting fall by continuing the Lehigh Valley Underground

Concert Series at First Fridays in South Bethlehem. Presented in partnership with SouthSide Arts District on the First Friday of every month, our October 6 lineup is set to include Billy Bauer Band and many more of the Lehigh Valley’s favorite and up-and-coming local acts, who will be showcased in shops, restaurants, and places of business throughout the South Side. (southsideartsdistrict.com) At Fig and Lehigh Valley Underground, we believe in the power of live, local music to build community. International visionary artist Wifredo Lam [1902-1982] became part of the inner circles of Modernism and Surrealism alongside Pablo Picasso, André Breton, and Joan Miró. Lam was born in Cuba where, as a child, he witnessed the hallucinatory mixture of Chinese shrines, Catholic ritual, and African rites that characterizes Cuban Santería. After spending decades in Europe, Wifredo Lam returned to Cuba at the onset of World War II. His work fused Cubist and Surrealist approaches with AfroCuban motifs, resulting in hybrid figures that combined humans, animals, and plants. The 21 works from the private family collection of Lam’s great nephew, Juan Castillo Vázquez, marks their first exhibition in the United States, and one of the first cultural exchanges with Cuba in the period of renewed diplomatic relations.

Main Gallery, Zoellner Arts Center María Martínez-Cañas is a photographer who works beyond the limits of the camera. Conceptually driven, she dissects, collages, digitally manipulates, erases, and recombines images, resulting in a range of forms that includes: photomontage, camera-less photograms, sculptural installation, and archival research. Each series reveals a different facet of her worldview. Leaving Cuba as an infant, raised in Puerto Rico, and educated in Philadelphia and Chicago,

Martínez-Cañas’ life has been infused— via family memory and imagination—with a distinctly Cuban culture dislocated from the island itself. LUAG began collecting Martínez-Cañas’ work in 1986. This exhibition presents a survey of collected works, offering a glimpse into one artist’s evolving relationship with the idea of photography.

director and chief

CURATOR of the LUAG Teaching Museum since 1974, Ricardo Viera will be retiring from his post next year. It’s no easy task to sum up the contributions of such an accomplished and dynamic presence. At LUAG, Mr. Viera established a visual laboratory and teaching collection program, as well as a nationally recognized collection of Latino and Latin American works on paper, photography, and video— amassing a current collection of over 14,000 works in all. An inspiring and sought-after professor, he has also taught several courses in museum and curatorial studies, special topics in history of photography, public art, and visual thinking strategies.

Beyond Lehigh, Ricardo Viera is known internationally as a lecturer, panelist, and consultant for government arts and cultural agencies, non-profit community organizations, and visual art projects. Along with an extensive list of curated thematic and individual exhibitions and publications, the achievements of 43 years are too many to name. And anyone who’s been lucky enough to encounter him at the gallery has undoubtedly been delighted by his gregarious enthusiasm! Ricardo Viera, all of us at Fig join your colleagues and students in expressing our gratitude for your years of leadership as chair, and as we look to LUAG’s future, your mark will never be forgotten.

Kassie Hilgert, President and CEO of ArtsQuest, who will receive the Good Neighbor Award for Arts & Education for her organization’s outstanding community and economic impact on the Greater Lehigh Valley.

Dr. Karen Walton, Provost at DeSales University, who will receive the Youth & Family Good Neighbor Award for her 20 years as the host of PBS39’s academic quiz program, Scholastic Scrimmage.

The Hon. Maxwell Davison, former trial court judge and founding partner of Davison & McCarthy Professional Corporation, who will receive the Founders Award.

Previous Good Neighbor Award recipients include: PPL Corporation; Air Products & Chemicals, Inc.; Barry Dobil, President, Josh Early Candies; Nancy Dischinat, Executive Director Lehigh Valley Workforce Development Board; and PBS39 retiree, Joseph Martocci.

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to the city of Bethlehem

Fresh Face: Clusters Handcrafted Popcorn T H E S G H I AT T I FA M I LY had an epiphany as they were walking down to see a fireworks show in New Hope, Pennsylvania. “We always loved going to the fireworks down at the beach,” says Julian Sghiatti, proprietor of the newly-opened Clusters Handcrafted Popcorn at 530 Main Street in Bethlehem. “We’d go get our caramel corn before we watched them. But in New Hope, all they had was ice cream.” As business owners and entrepreneurs they realized a need for another snack option, and decided to bring that beach-popcorn experience to their home town. That was six

years ago. Today, they are a family-owned franchise making moves to grow. “With the past couple years of doing great on Main Street in New Hope,” Julian says, “we were getting franchise interest. They loved the space, they loved that we designed it ourselves, they loved the concept, and they loved our flavors.” The wide range of flavors available has something to satisfy everyone—from the savory “Buffalo Wing-It” and “White Cheddar Chipotle” to the sweeter “Cookie Explosion” and “Chocolate Covered Cherry.” And what’s even better, most 530 MAIN STREET, BETHLEHEM

flavors are gluten-free and dairy-free. But it’s more than just experiential retail, they do catering, too—wedding bars, birthday parties, gender reveals—and of course fundraising events. Bethlehem was the perfect location for the family’s next move. Julian had already been living and working here for almost five years, and he already knew the business. “Bethlehem is a city, and a business hub,” Julian says. “We want to prove that as a business we could move somewhere else and succeed.”
