W E ’ R E S O F O RT U N AT E to live in a place that has long valued art, in all its forms. From the renowned Bach Choir of Bethlehem (120 years old this year!) to three centuries of decorative arts at the Kemerer Museum to a vast collection of historical prints and paintings at the Moravian Archives, evidence of Bethlehem’s longstanding connection to the arts is all around us. That history laid a foundation on which a diverse and thriving arts community has been built, and continues to grow. As residents, we reap its benefits every day. From studio to stage, makerspace to museum, there are countless options for those looking to engage with art—or those looking to make it. More and more, we see art popping up in unexpected places. See that empty wall over there? A mural is on its way. Street corners boast bike racks shaped like guitars and Bethlehem stars. Parking lots become temporary movie theatres and performance spaces. Art is everywhere. Adding heart and infusing color, it breathes life into our everyday lives. And a community that values the arts makes us feel valued, too.

This issue celebrates art. In particular, it honors the stories of those who’ve taken the risks and done the work to craft a life around creating and sharing art—those who remind us that art changes perspectives, opens our minds, and makes us feel. We thank these artists, and all the artists in our community, for these vital voices—voices from which we all benefit. KIERA WILHELM & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

Aardvark Stories: Cory & Christina Crawford FOR CORY AND CHRISTINA CRAWFORD, it was love at first run. In 2014, both runners independently signed up for Aardvark Sports Shop’s “Team Vark”, a 16-week half marathon training program. After having seen each other at several previous training sessions, they ended up running together, just the two of them, during a fateful 6-mile run. Shortly after, Cory initiated running outside of the store-organized sessions, and their friendship quickly blossomed. “I didn’t sign up for Team Vark to meet someone, but then I found Christina, who was my pace, willing to go on runs with me, and was nice,” says Cory.

This is the third installment of “Aardvark Stories”—celebrating the journeys of folks who have found support, good health, and fitness through their experience with Aardvark Sports Shop. Each story is written as told to freelance writer and blogger Stephanie Hoppe, herself an avid runner and Team Vark member. Learn more about Stephanie’s running adventures at hoppefeet.wordpress.com.

Christina explains, “I was trying to focus on myself and something I wanted to do, and it just so happened that we both had that same goal. We met at our sweatiest, and still felt so comfortable with each other.”

running shoes embroidered with their initials and wedding date. They plan to wear these shoes once each year, on their anniversary, thus ensuring that running will always play a role in their relationship.

Within a month, their romantic relationship was official, and running continued to influence their love story. Their first Valentine’s Day was also their first marathon together, they were engaged after an Aardvark group run, and they ran a marathon two weeks before their wedding, which was also heavily running-themed.

“We identify a lot with Downtown Bethlehem and Aardvark. We met here, we were married here, our whole life together has revolved around it,” says Cory.

At their reception, which many Team Vark members attended, the couple wore A ARDVARKSPORTSSHOP.COM

And thanks to Aardvark, they will never forget precisely where they were when they first met, since there is now a group run route named in their honor: “The Love at First Run.”

AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.

Authentic: Greg Funfgeld T O T H E M U S I C I A N S , scholars, colleagues, and friends who’ve had the pleasure of knowing him, Greg Funfgeld may seem like one in a million. More accurately, he’s one in six: since the Bach Choir of Bethlehem was founded in 1898, he is only its sixth conductor and artistic director. Greg, celebrating his 35th year with the Choir, is humbled and grateful by the pleasure of continually discovering the works of J.S. Bach—“Bach is smarter than all of us, so you have to keep working at it”— and the joy of collaborating with extraordinary people. “There are so many wonderful people connected to this organization,” he says. “It’s the ultimate embarrassment of riches.” A native of Long Island—whose parents found his first piano teacher in the Yellow pages—and graduate of Westminster Choir College in organ performance, Greg came to Bethlehem as the music director for First Presbyterian Church in 1976. The Bach Choir position opened up, and the rest is history.

Greg Funfgeld, Artistic Director and Conductor

You could say all of it is history. The Choir, the first to perform Bach’s Mass in B Minor in the U.S. in 1900, represents over a century of tradition in Bethlehem. During Greg’s three and a half decades, the Choir has grown beyond its Christmas and May concerts to offer a spring program, monthly free Bach at Noon concerts, and Bach to School outreach programs. “I’ve wanted to make it much more a part of the life of the whole community,” Greg says, “to open the doors as wide as we can and invite people in.” A life well lived, after all, is a life shared. That’s the guiding spirit behind the new urban winery in the beautiful reclaimed industrial Silk Mill where, once upon a time, owner Justin Fretz’s grandmother worked. You can meet with friends, and make new ones, over a delicious glass of wine made right in Easton, Pennsylvania. When Justin was traveling the world as a marine engineer, repairing boats from Japan to Ecuador, he was impressed by

how cultures around the world celebrated eating and drinking. It was a social experience—and now the Palmer Township native is excited to bring that same spirit back home. Love of home and family, and love of local, is a key part of the Project. Their goal is to produce a variety of delicious wines using at least 80% East Coast-grown grapes. And those wines proudly announce where they’re from, whether they’re Silk Mill Rosé, Free Bridge White, or Rover Red, named in honor of Easton High School’s mascot.

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.

Giving Back: Jill Dunn Jones F O R J I L L D U N N J O N E S , Artistic Director of Pennsylvania Youth Theatre (PYT), and for the kids, young adults, and audiences who are a part of its mission, it’s all about connection. Connecting with a story, or yourself. Connecting to different people and experiences. Connecting to the community of Bethlehem, as a vibrant part of its arts scene and heritage. And connecting to Jill’s own past: she isn’t just Artistic Director—she was a kid at PYT. When Jill returned to Bethlehem after working in drama education and outreach in New York, she was naturally drawn to the Bethlehem institution, now in its 33rd season. “The vision is to create a space where kids can be who they are,” she says. “We give structure to that, but it’s their time to explore.” PYT offers summer camps and voice, drama, and dance instruction year-round, and a slate of productions— recent shows include Hamilton and Frozen, with Annie, The Little Mermaid, and Our Town coming soon—that feature full youth casts.

Jill Dunn Jones, Artistic Director

PYT loves sharing those productions with not just family and friends, but general audiences and school groups—kids who may not have experienced live theater before—by offering discounted daytime shows at the Ice House. PYT’s flagship outreach program, Curtains Up On Reading, is even more in-depth: a multi-week, in-school drama residency where students explore translating storybooks from the page to the stage. “Even if we don’t know how,” says Jill, “we always want to be connected.” Exploring theater makes that connection more possible. SHERRI KERSHNER 51 WEST BROAD STREET 610.419.1200 TWISTEDOLIVEBETHLEHEM.COM

“Be open to going down the road less traveled—it can lead to something greater,” says Sherri, coowner of Twisted Olive restaurant in Downtown Bethlehem. It’s a philosophy that has guided her life. After putting herself through college, she pursued a career in Information Technology, at a time when there were few female role models in the field. She made her way up the ranks—and today, serves as Director of IT Security and Governance at Olympus Corporation of the Americas, traveling the world to work on global projects. Sherri credits these travel opportunities with igniting her passion for food. “Then I married a chef, and the rest is history,” she says of opening Twisted Olive with husband Steve Kershner. They put everything into starting the restaurant, and their hard work is paying off: Twisted Olive fast became a Downtown favorite, for its creative food and cocktails and is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year. Grateful for the inspiring women she’s met on her own journey, Sherri feels a keen responsibility to light the path for others’ success. She sits on the board of Northeast Ministry, co-leads the initiative to launch a mentoring program at Olympus, and works with several other area nonprofits including Good Shepherd Women’s Giving Circle, Charter Arts Foundation, Executive Women International, and YWCA Bethlehem. “I’m fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful women who have brought change and created new opportunities,” she says. “I want to provide people encouragement and support in achieving their dreams.”

Voices: Josh Klein of Funk Norris A G U I TA R I S T F R O M the age of 6, Josh Klein combines a unique blend of influences, multi-instrumental talents, and a mind wired for creation to fuel his musical projects. The Berklee grad learned early about the who’s who of classic rock—Hendrix, Zappa, The Beatles, and B.B. King—before getting into ska, punk and—oddly enough—jazz in its purest form. “Originally, jazz was not what we think of it today. It was a fusion of different and beautiful things. African drums, European harmony, slave songs, and joyous hymns all together making ‘that sound’ I knew and loved. Not to mention that each player individually brought

with them their own culture, ideas, and expressions that made them sound like them,” Josh notes. “To this day, I find myself delving in as deep as I can, exploring the origins, and never being satisfied.” This love of experimentation—and of finding a unique voice—has allowed Josh to carve out a niche as one of the Lehigh Valley’s most intriguing musicians, as the mastermind behind one-man looping project, Hairy Dudini. “Dudini is almost like watching a live session recording, except there are no overdubs, no autotune, and no post-production. Just play, set it, and let the machine accompany as it does.”

FIG VOICES New sounds of our City in partnership with Lehigh Valley Underground.

The solo project has evolved into a full band by the name of Funk Norris, whose sound is rooted in funk infused with African/Moroccan rhythms and Middle Eastern melodies, with accompanying projections of Kung Fu films onto the stage—all while the band is adorned in full martial arts uniforms. Most importantly, Josh and his bandmates are keeping enjoyment at the core of Funk Norris. “Everyone involved has the same goal in mind: let’s just play some great music and embrace the things we love. Who has time for anything more?!” Learn more about Josh Klein and his projects at joshkleinonline.com.

Daniel Watts INDEPENDENT ARTIST

M O T I V A T E D B Y T H E J O Y and pleasure of creating, Daniel Watts started drawing at age 4 with crayons and pencils and found he could copy what he saw. But the real joy came later, when he discovered he could paint what he didn’t see. “Though I still spend a lot of time looking closely at the world, my work is born out of my imagination,” says Daniel. For more than 30 years, Daniel has been creating contemporary oil paintings on canvas—more than 800 of them, and counting. They are sweeping,

complex paintings that speak of stillness, imagination, and wonder. Painting out of his Wilson Avenue studio (which is open to the public by appointment), Daniel can also be found leading discussions and workshops about art and creativity in the community. He works with galleries, designers, and private and corporate collectors both nationally and internationally, and is represented locally at Brownstone Design on Broad Street in Bethlehem. Because of his unique ability to create site-specific pieces and focus on

client relationships, Daniel is often commissioned to paint for particular locations, in both residential and corporate settings. “I enjoy what comes out of the discussions,” he says. “It’s a mutual exchange that helps the work come to be.” “In the end, my wish is to find beauty,” Daniel says. “And the challenge is, can I be still enough, courageous enough, and open enough to receive it? As creatives we need to discover the power of wonder, and of feeling comfortable with not knowing.”

Working for a master craftsman opened Matt’s eyes to the process of coming up with an idea, sketching it on paper, and figuring out how to construct it with his own hands. He is inspired by the Lehigh Valley’s rich history to discover reclaimed and salvaged materials to bring ideas to life. “Our ancestors worked much harder and much smarter than we do to build the lives they lived,” says Matt. “Seeing and learning from their craftsmanship and other woodworkers motivates me to do better.”

Matt started RustiK Rehab three years ago as his “side hustle”, working nights and weekends in his backyard. Now it’s a full-time job, full-time passion, and full-time working shop. Having turned his own passions into a successful business, Matt encourages others to pursue their dreams too. “There are always reasons not to do something, but only you can build the life you really want,” he says. “Surround yourself with good people that support you and go for it!”

For 15 years, Giulissa worked in Supply Chain and Logistics, moving up the corporate ladder. But she was stressed out without a true creative outlet. One day, the art of modern calligraphy caught her attention. She started practicing and fell in love. Giulissa never put the pen down. Calligraphy brought her peace and expression, and of that realization Paperloveme was born. In addition to her calligraphy and original watercolor illustrations, Giulissa teaches calligraphy and art

workshops. “I make pretty things for people to enjoy, and I love teaching how to do it,” she says. “It is important to me that my work translates to a sentiment,” she says. “Whether it is making a bride cry of happiness because her wedding stationery turned out exactly how she wanted it, or by calming the frustration of my students when they are having trouble with their tools, making that kind of impact on someone’s life is what Paperloveme is about.”

George Hrab INDEPENDENT MUSICIAN

“I love so many styles and artists, and I know most people love a diverse amount of music as well. Why not play it all?” George muses. “Fortunately for me, Bethlehem has been an incredible place to do just that.”

484.695.8114 GEORGEHR AB.COM

Although George has traveled the world—sometimes entertaining thousands of people at a time—it’s performing in intimate settings for a handful of listeners that has provided some of his most musically satisfying experiences. And it’s for these kinds of solo performances that he is always ready to offer his unique talents— talents perfectly suited for local venues and audiences in Bethlehem and beyond.

Whether it’s singing standards from the ’30s and ’40s for a formal event; hosting an ’80s Sing-Along at Tunes at Twilight, featuring his own unique and witty original compositions in an acoustic coffeehouse setting, or entertaining audiences with his hallmark, surprisingly eclectic variety of cover songs, George has a setlist for every occasion.

Offering: The perfect music for your perfect occasion in a myriad of styles, artists, and influences. Solo musical performances incorporating guitar, piano, voice, and more.

GEORGE@GEORGEHR AB.COM

It’s his father he credits for planting the seed, by giving George drum lessons at age seven, and instilling in him a love for all types of music. That love led to learning guitar and then piano,

which resulted in eventually amassing a repertoire that spans everything from Gershwin to Gaga.

31

WHILE M A N Y LEHIG H VA LLE Y residents know George Hrab as the dynamic drummer and Musical Director of the Philadelphia Funk Authority, not all know of his full breadth as an entertainer: George is also a singer, songwriter, guitarist, piano player, recording artist, lecturer, podcaster, event emcee, and author.

James Lavranos

INDEPENDENT VIDEOGRAPHER & PHOTOGRAPHER J A M E S L A V R A N O S fell in love with film when he used to play around with a camcorder as a child. He eventually made his way to film school, and turned his passion into a business.

All of James’ clients get that level of dedication. “I want all of my work to have that purpose, to tell a story, to carry a message,” says James. “My goal is to make excellent content, increase production value, and create growth wherever I go.” An artist first and foremost, James draws inspiration from David Fincher’s signature lighting and camera work

in his own cinematography. In his photography, he is moved by the work of Platon Antoniou. “He uses his photos to inspire change and tell the stories of the voiceless,” James says. “I want to create photos with that much thoughtfulness and intention.” In his spare time, James pursues his personal projects. “Some days I just go out and shoot,” he says. “I love street photography and I like to challenge myself to achieve something that I never have before.”

T H E T E A M A T Alloy5 Architecture believes great things are possible when people work together. With a combined 45 years of work experience in the field, Michael Metzger, AIA, and Randy Galiotto, AIA, are at the helm of a group of architects and designers that is crosstrained in business information modeling and graphic design—and practices in an atmosphere of teamwork. “Architecture tends to be isolating; we get very focused on minute details and precision angles,” says Michael. “At

Alloy5, we seek collaboration not just with a client, but also with each other.” Alloy5 offers architectural, interior, and graphic design services. For Michael and Randy, it’s all a balance of art and science. Their clients present them with a challenge—to design a high-tech lab, renovate an old school, or create a nanobrewery—and they have to be creative within the limitations of building codes and budgets. “In our practice, we always try to put ourselves in the shoes of our clients,”

says Randy. “We think about their perspective and then we look at how they use a space, how they’d like to use a space, and how that space can work best for them.” Most of all, they are motivated by seeing their team of artists, architects, and designers collaborate together. “Some people feel stifled by the limitations of a project,” Randy says—but the team at Alloy5 is always seeking new problems to solve. “Creativity flows from challenges.”

Chris Colon INDEPENDENT ARTIST

T H E A R T W O R K O F Chris Colon has been described as whimsically exuberant, vibrantly expressive, and richly ornate. Drawing inspiration from graffiti artists, as much as from the Baroque and Art Nouveau movements, Chris’s dreamlike compositions are intended to spark fascination and wonder. His paintings and wearable art straddle the line between pop and traditional, fantasy and reality. While each of his works is, on some level, an expression of self, Chris continuously seeks to create bolder

greater experiences for his audience as well. “I want the viewer to be totally immersed,” Chris explains. “I want people to feel as if it’s their story and journey in some sort of way.” After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a degree in graphic design, Chris started his career in the arts on the streets of NY as a street vendor. Along with his fine arts background, he specializes in creating one-of-a-kind wearable products that are more of a conversation piece than apparel. His hope is to counteract the

monotony of everyday mass-produced brands. “Above all, I want the customer to feel unique,” he says. “My motivation for every project I start is not only the opportunity to do something fresh, but also to create something for our culture that inspires people to discover their own stories and journeys.” When asked to offer advice to aspiring artists, Chris’s response reflects the very path he himself has taken: “Be Unique. Be Different. Be Original.”

“Art galleries and museums are no longer passive places that solely store objects from the past,” says William. “Instead,

Lehigh University is offering a world class art collection of over 15,000 objects, with exhibitions in galleries located throughout Lehigh’s three campuses. All LUAG exhibitions are free and open to the public.

they are laboratories where people can experiment and where they can see themselves and their world through new eyes.” LUAG puts this philosophy right into practice, hosting an internationally renowned collection that is open to the public, representing diverse cultures and media, as well as an outstanding outdoor sculpture collection that never closes. As an art museum director, the educator in him is always present. William views the galleries as spaces to which all people should feel invited—to learn and explore, be inspired, and even generate

solutions to concerns or questions that they have. His goal is to highlight the relevancy of the art collections, and to use those collections to activate creativity and inquiry. William also considers himself a maker. Some of his earliest memories are of making models, drawings, machines, and sculptures. “At my core is a belief that the process of making things—and investigating what others have made— helps us understand ourselves and the world in new ways,” he says.

SouthSide Arts District T H E S O U T H S I D E A R T S D I S T R I C T is dedicated to making art of all forms accessible to residents and visitors of the Lehigh Valley and beyond. Over the past year the SouthSide’s First Friday celebration has introduced guests to a new concert series loyal to showcasing local musicians throughout the District. The man behind this fresh, hip concert series is Gerard Longo— Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Lehigh Valley Underground. Each month he features musicians of every genre, creating a unique and inclusive music scene throughout the Arts District. To complement those efforts are public art and pop up art galleries, giving guests who visit a chance to view and appreciate a variety of artists. Jon Patrizi and Sienna Proetto are two who have used the District as their canvas. Sienna has not only painted one of our signature flower pots—hers is outside of Homebase Skateshop—but has provided her work to multiple shops, including Color Me Mine’s Cobalt Gallery. Jon has contributed three artistic flower pot designs to the streetscape, most recently outside of U & Tea Authentic Chinese Restaurant. Each flower pot is a unique and fun design encouraging patrons to continue walking to find the next planter and enjoy what many have called SouthSide’s public art gallery. These three, along with so many other members of the community, have worked together to make the SouthSide Arts District a place of culture and celebration of art in all forms.

“A genuine experience with the arts outside of school.” SANDS BETHLEHEM HAS

established a meaningful community partnership with United Way Community School, Donegan Elementary School. On an annual basis, and as part of a comprehensive educational strategy, Sands Bethlehem provides programming, transportation, food, and volunteer support to Donegan students, offering them experiences and programs they otherwise would not be able to access. Through ArtsQuest’s ArtSmart program, students visit the Banana Factory after school to work with professional Teaching Artists in artist studios, galleries, and classroom spaces

in a variety of disciplines including fiber arts, painting, ceramics, print-making, and public art. Sands Bethlehem underwrites the cost of transportation for students. “The transportation provided by Sands Bethlehem allows our students to have a genuine experience with the arts outside of school, and without the transportation provided by Sands Bethlehem this opportunity wouldn’t be possible for our students,” explains Donegan Principal Sonia Vazquez. Sands Bethlehem also supports a Visiting Artist Residency, in which ArtsQuest Teaching Artists work in the classroom to develop and co-teach

a curriculum-driven art project in collaboration with teachers or staff. The program also incorporates a field trip to the Banana Factory to see where their Visiting Artist works and creates. Additionally, students and their families are invited to a special December First Friday event at the Banana Factory to engage in art-making, enjoy pizza, and explore the artist studios and galleries. Sands Bethlehem provides the transportation for both the field trip and the First Friday event, allowing Donegan students and their families to expand their access to ArtsQuest’s art resources.

“ I ’ M D O I N G TH I N G S I ’ V E N E V E R D O N E B E FO R E .” Lloyd Ziegler embraces every new opportunity that comes his way at Garden Spot Village—from learning Scottish dancing to honing his woodworking skills to participating in travel with purpose trips to help rebuild homes devastated by Hurricane Matthew in North Carolina. Shortly after moving to Garden Spot, Lloyd joined the woodshop even though he didn’t have experience or woodworking skills. Master craftsman Bill George was the first of many craftsmen who have taught Lloyd the fine points of woodworking. He uses the woodworking skills he’s learned to help others whenever he can. For example, he recently crafted 100 “broken” wood hearts. This fall a team from Garden Spot Village will tie them together with leather cord and share “mended hearts” with patients at CURE International’s Kenya hospital in Kijabe. Living a purposeful life in a thriving community is at the heart of Garden Spot Village—because creating a meaningful future never ends. We would love to hear your story, introduce you to some residents, and give you the opportunity to learn a little more about the Garden Spot story.
