A NOTE FROM FIG
Makers gonna Make. Growing up, I was obsessed with making things—snow globes out of pantyhose eggs and envelopes out of old magazines. I even had a mailbox set up in my room for my pretend mail that I created. But my favorite thing of all was to make books. I would dream up a story, write it down, type it up on an old Mac, print it out, draw the scenes, outline in sharpie, color, laminate, and bind—oh, and include a photo of myself as the author.
I’m “grown up” now, and I have the opportunity to be a part of this beautiful book. A book that is put together by talents far greater than mine, with photographs that capture the souls of businesses, and storylines that are filled with magic. A book that is printed on sustainably sourced paper and delivered to mailboxes! A book that celebrates Columbia, champions small businesses, and cultivates relationships. Each page is an ode to the arts found in our city and the Makers that create them. From blown glass and murals to hand crafted goods and performance art, they all share something in common. They are made by hands; hands that have put in the hours and hours of honing, practicing, serving, wiping away sweat and tears, polishing, and in the end, producing a product. A product that you and I can enjoy. How special is that? Join us in celebrating and supporting these incredible Makers in our city! B RY N L E Y FA R R F I G C O LU M B I A D I R E C T O R

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.
“Cancer may never go away. But my hope is that the momentum and the care and compassion in our community never stops.” — E M I LY LO N G
Giving Back: Palmetto Health Foundation & Emily Long E M I LY LO N G I S D E T E R M I N E D : T H E R E A R E N O E XC U S E S . Palmetto Health Foundation is just as determined as Emily is, and together with the Columbia community, they are working hard to eliminate any excuse that someone can use to justify procrastinating their mammogram appointment. When her world was rocked by a breast cancer diagnosis three years ago, Emily was immediately surrounded by a supportive community and Palmetto Health Breast Center. “It’s hard to know where to start and which doctors to call,” Emily said. “My Nurse Navigator (from Palmetto Health) relieved me of that burden and helped pave the way. All I had to do was put one foot in front of the other.”
Today, Emily is a survivor and she’s helping others fight breast cancer through her volunteer work. She was the Featured Breast Cancer Survivor and the event chair for the 2016 Walk for Life and Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon and is back at the helm again this year. All of the money raised through the event stays right here in the Columbia community and this year, proceeds will help fund a 7th 3D mammography machine. Adding another 3D mammography machine will increase the community’s access to the most advanced technology to help with early detection and diagnosis. “There is so much that I love about the Walk for Life event,” Emily said. “I love that all the money raised through Palmetto Health Foundation’s Walk for
Life, Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon, 5k + 10k stays here in our community. I love to see survivors wearing and waving their bandanas as they join the mass of people on the walk and race routes. I love seeing families out supporting their family members, friends, neighbors and strangers alike.” Participating in the Walk for Life and Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon allows for the community to not only show their support, but to continually give back to the community in the form of new equipment to ensure that everyone has convenient and readily available access to the best technology. “Cancer may never go away,” Emily said. “But my hope is that the momentum and the care and compassion in our community never stops.”

Columbia has a robust arts scene that is sure to delight all of your senses. For the sense of smell, we have roasted coffees and essential oils that will have you inhaling deeply; for the sense of taste, we offer foods that taste even better than they look; for the sense of sight, let the sight of graceful ballet and beautiful fine art spark your imagination; for touch, there are textures to be found from clothing to massages; and for the sense of sound, listen to the music and theatre that are readily available in our town. This fall, we celebrate the local artists and businesses that are making their mark one swatch, gemstone, ingredient, and brushstroke at a time.

The Gallery is open Monday through Friday (9AM-5PM) and Saturday (10AM-4PM). The studio is also open year-round, and visitors are welcome to watch as the artists create their work.

AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.
Authentic: Peg Averyt WO R L D LY T R AV E L S , several inspired by her great, great, great, great grandfather who began the James Finlay Tea Company in Scotland in the late 1700s, have brought Peg and her husband Gayle all across the globe from South Africa to Scotland, India, Argentina, Italy, and everywhere in between. But it’s the artists right here in Columbia that Peg has been the most drawn to throughout the years. By hanging local artwork for the past 18 years in her Finleaf gallery and hosting a wide array of local artists, Peg has fostered a supportive community
of creators and makers that allows for Columbia to experience artwork they otherwise wouldn’t have seen. Her shows have been for artists from Columbia and from out of town, and they’ve all been very successful. Equally as successful as her shows are the children’s books that Peg has written and illustrated by hand that reflect her love for her grandchildren, her childhood, and South Carolina. Willowbel’s Wagon is her first book and is the tale of a brown rabbit that lives on Heathwood Circle in Columbia. Her most recent book, Dutch Dives In, takes
place at the beach on Pawley’s Island and is based on Peg’s childhood trips to the shore. Peg illustrated the books with watercolor images painted on pieces of fine, batiste material that she found in an old textile mill that was closing down in Union, SC. At 77 years young, Peg will continue to be an influence in Columbia for years to come. Whether it’s through her own art or the ways in which she gives back to the community through her church and a local private school, her passion for the arts will forge a path for her to follow.

The makers, creators, and artists in Columbia love being here and love the artistic community that has been built. We asked why they love it so much, and here’s what they had to say:
There’s a growing sense of exploration and discovery in the Columbia creative community right now, and artists are emboldened to take more risks and find new opportunities for their work. It’s a really exciting time to be in Columbia.” — L EE SNELGROVE Executive Director of One Columbia
“What I love about Columbia’s creative scene is the vibrancy it implants in our wonderful city. We value our historic significance and capture the essence of our southern roots while continuing to grow and make Columbia a thriving destination! I love walking down Main Street or Gervais Street and enjoying all of the LIFE that has been brought into these incredible historic buildings with galleries, restaurants, museums, and creative professionals!”
— J O D I S A LT E R Dean’s Advisor, College of Arts and Sciences at The University of South Carolina “Our art scene is growing! I think we have a small but mighty group of talented people right here in Columbia doing some great things, and just in the last two years, I’ve seen it grow enormously. I’m excited to watch it continue! We have designers, artists, chefs, photographers, graphic designers, bloggers, and so many others that I think people would be surprised to hear that we live and work in Columbia, and I love that.”
— M E G A N C A R N Artist “I love that the arts community in Columbia is intimate, progressive, diverse, and community focused. The efforts of organizations like the Columbia Museum of Art, the Richland County Library, and One Columbia make our art scene a place where anyone interested in the arts can thrive and explore.”
— M A R I A FA B R I Z I O Illustrator & Designer
“I love the accessibility of the Columbia art scene. It is easy to meet and discover other artists at any of the numerous events around town. Columbia feels like it is on the verge of being a vital creative community in the Southeast.”
— M A R I U S VA L D E S Associate Professor of Studio Art at The University of South Carolina “When I host an art showcase in the Midlands, the real fun is seeing the diversity in the room. It’s just magical to see residents of Columbia come from all over the city and embrace my work. I don’t know what’s more fulfilling: creating modern art that captures the flavors of the season or the look on someone’s face when they feel inspired to own it.”
— A L I C I A B A R N E S ABC Anchor & Artist “Columbia is a filthy rich environment for creators. As a filmmaker, there is freedom to practice my craft here that does not exist in much larger cities and even smaller ones closer to home. The city has a creative community that proudly supports those who make things but also expects those makers to pull their weight and do more than just say they’re going to make something. This communal self-awareness exists in Columbia and has motivated me for years.”
— W A D E S E L L E R S Coal Powered Filmworks “Columbia has a diverse visual arts scene from which I have personally and professionally benefited. The ability to express myself through my work in public has allowed me to grow and share beyond the city limits but only because of the support first found at home.”
— S USAN LENZ Fine Artist
“As our city and state grows, we are seeing growth in the design community as well. There is some amazing work being produced here that rivals work anywhere else in the US. Generally speaking, I think Southern designers bring a certain amount of charm, authenticity, and restraint to their work. Creativity, attention to detail, and craft has always been important, but we are seeing more work with those things in mind now.”
— R YO N E D W A R D S Riggs Partners “Columbia is bubbling over with creative inspiration. It is great to see so many specific arts spilling over and influencing one another. As a graphic designer, I try to take in all aspects of popular culture, so I draw influence from all things in Columbia from the Soda City Market, to the Fireflies games, to movies at The Nick, to the open studios at the Richland County Library. People in Columbia are making the arts a priority and it’s very exciting to see.”
— S TEPHANIE NACE Associate Professor of Graphic Design at The University of South Carolina “It’s been fun to watch Columbia’s creative community grow and expand over the last couple of decades. It’s inspiring to see such a wide range of artists—from painters and sculptors to yarn-bombers and filmmakers— thriving in the city.”
— B O B W E R T Z Creative Director at The University of South Carolina “More than anything else, the artists and artisans are the faces of our city, and show the world that Columbia, SC is a creative class capital, filled with smart people doing fun and interesting things.”
— E MILE DEFELICE Soda City Market
“I think Columbia has really come a long way since we have been here, and it is exciting and humbling to be working alongside so many creative people. One thing that has always stuck out to me is just how supportive the community is. There is a willingness to work together for a greater cause.”
— S ARA THOMAS Creative Director at The Half and Half “Columbia is well on its way to becoming a regional arts hub. On any given evening arts lovers can choose between a variety of activities that range from concerts to gallery openings to grass rootsy arts happenings. And it may be that it’s at these one-off, low-budget, DIY events where the most exciting art experiences are taking place. Artists get tired of waiting on the powers that be (whoever they are) to take notice, so they take it upon themselves to do what their souls tell them to do—make art. It’s these ephemeral, almost magical events that keep the true arts aficionado busy— you’re afraid that if you aren’t there you might miss something that will truly change your life. THIS is the kind of authentic art experience that makes Columbia unique. Our artists aren’t going to let a lack of funding or infrastructure keep them from doing what they were born to do—create art in its purest form.”
— C INDI BOITER Jasper Magazine “The Midlands has a vibrant local music scene, from alternative/indie rock to roots, folk, blue grass, new country, EDM, and hip-hop and even solo performers and party bands that play your favorites, there’s something for every taste. Get off your couch and get out and enjoy your city. And if you like the performance—tell the performer, buy one of their CDs, or drop a few dollars in their tip jar.”
