W E A R E C R E AT O R S A N D M A K E R S — and most likely you are too. You just haven’t thought about it in that way before. After all, this is Lancaster County—home of some of the most famous makers in our history. Take Jacob Eby from Manheim for example—a maker of clocks in the early 1800’s. His work is revered today as some of the finest craftsmanship ever seen—all crafted by hand, without electricity. Whether you’re making candles from a generations-old recipe or painting one of Lancaster’s historic homes, you’re making something. If you’re a chef, maybe you’re making red beets and goat cheese into your own rendition of art. If you’re a landscape contractor, you’re transforming an empty space into an oasis. And if you’re a website designer, you’re making a portal for someone to uncover information, plan a trip, or find their dreams. We make Fig for you—the reader. We make it so you can see Lancaster in all its glory. We make it so businesses can show you their mission, the things they make, and the services they provide. Most of all, we make Fig because
we believe that living out our mission of lifting-up small businesses makes a difference. In this issue, we celebrate makers of all kinds. Throughout these pages, we hope you’ll come to know and love them like we do. As a champion for the arts, Mayor Rick Gray has encouraged makers throughout this City to grow and thrive. He cheered for the entrepreneurs who wanted to make this place their home. He helped to make the City of Lancaster a place where ideas can grow and dreams can be followed. As his tenure ends, we would like to dedicate this issue to him. Thank you Mayor Gray for your support, your stories, and your enthusiastic love of this City. Fresh Face: Marotta/Main Architects T H E I N N O VAT I V E T E A M at Marotta/Main Architects has always felt a strong connection to downtown Lancaster. Their team finds inspiration in the history and architecture of the ever-evolving cityscape and its residents. When they outgrew their Old Town location, the team was excited for the opportunity to invest in another downtown property that would better suit the needs of their business and clients. Their new building at 214 North Duke Street has been beautifully transformed
from warehouse space to studio, design, and conference space. The newly renovated building boasts a tremendous open work area for the entire team, allowing the technical and design staff to collaborate effectively on each project. The architectural industry is often credited with being forefront in the “Makers Movement”, but the team at Marotta/Main sees their clients as the true makers. They take pride in bringing the dreams, visions, and needs of their clients to fruition through
architectural design, innovative problem solving, and respectful restorations. What sets Marotta/Main apart from other architectural firms isn’t a specific “style” of building or architecture. Rather, it is the ability to respond to the unique needs of their clients and design thoughtful, beautiful spaces. “Ultimately, we feel great about a project when our clients feel ownership over the space because they were a big part of the process.”

AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.
Authentic: Mayor Gray M AYO R R I C K G R AY LO V E S Lancaster. He can speak at length about many attributes that set Lancaster apart as the city authentic, brimming with people who breathe new life through their entrepreneurial spirit and strong sense of community. He beams like a proud parent and his eyes light up as he describes the neighborhoods, parks, restaurants, theatres, artists, and makers who add vibrancy and originality to the streets he walks each morning on his way to work. In 2005, Rick Gray decided that what he wanted to make most was a difference. With the support of his wife, artist Gail Gray, Rick took his love for Lancaster, his knowledge of the judicial system, and his desire to make an impact, and was elected as Mayor in 2005. Three terms later, Mayor Gray has decided not to run for a fourth but to “give someone else a

chance to make a difference.” As he looks back on the legacy of what he’s accomplished as Mayor, he is especially proud of the evolution in the parks programs and the street scaping that made the city brighter, safer, and more inviting. Most of all, he’s delighted when Lancastrians tell him that they are proud to live here and happy with their way of life. Through his tenure, Lancaster has evolved to become an alluring city for merchants, entrepreneurs, professionals, and families to settle. The transformation of the downtown brought the community together, and helped put Lancaster on the map as a destination city. Mayor Gray notes, “If you look at any city that has revitalized itself, it starts with the downtown.

Downtown is all of ours; it doesn’t belong to just one neighborhood, it’s everybody’s. Everybody in the City of Lancaster owns the downtown and comes to the downtown. So to revitalize the city, we started with the downtown and then spread out to the neighborhoods.” Straightening his bow-tie in his office beneath rows of impressive photographs featuring various world leaders and changemakers that he has encountered through his life, Mayor Gray remembers the drive that led him to run for this office twelve years ago. “I told my wife and my law partners that I was going to do something different. I wanted to get into public policy, run for Mayor, and give back to Lancaster, I hoped I could maybe repay it a little bit for all it’s given me.”

Thank you,
MAYOR GRAY!
The impact Mayor Gray has had on the City of Lancaster is undeniable. As we approach the 12th anniversary of Fig, Mayor Gray will end his time overseeing our City. We want to thank him for his guidance, vision and unending enthusiasm during 12 incredible years of change and growth. We sat down with a few friends and colleagues of Mayor Gray to hear their thoughts on his legacy. From laughing about his impeccable storytelling ability, to admiring his authentic drive in bringing the community together, there was a common—and inspiring—theme prevalent within each interview. We are proud to share these powerful words. “One of the things I love about Mayor Gray and his administration is that they are ‘just like us.’ We are just like them. That’s a team spirit kind of thing. He brought amazing cultural characteristics that include teamwork, collaboration, and customer-service. I am really proud of that.” —DONNA JESSUP
“As a business owner and having a business in downtown Lancaster, I have seen huge enhancements to the City of Lancaster. It’s amazing what he has done for us. Businesses are cleaner, neater, more comfortable, and safer. It’s a great place to be.” — M A RY KO H LE R
“He came in with a perspective that we want things to get solidified today, but with an eye towards the future. His legacy is one where every decision he made was made while looking ahead and modernizing a city.”
“From my particular point of view, he has been a friend of all communities—in particular the Latino community. He has been a friend, a colleague, and has been a real pleasure to work with. He’s a people-connector.”
—JAMES REICHENBACH
— CARLOS GR AUPER A
“His legacy will be that he has taken investor confidence in this city to a new level largely because of ‘who he is.’ He is eminently competent, trustworthy and strategic. And he is sincere in his belief in the city’s future. I think all of those pieces on display all the time are contagious.”
“Mayor Gray has this amazing ability to be relatable to every person. On the street, in the office, wherever he goes. He can maintain that personality and still be professional and effective in his position. He can do tactics, personal relationships, and politics on every level. I think what we will miss the most is his comfortability.”
—T O M B A L D R I G E
— J O E L WA LK E R
“The consistency and leadership of Mayor Gray’s terms have been so helpful for the city. I also really admire his willingness to launch the commission to combat poverty. It has created a roadmap and clarity within the community about what we should do, and how we can work moving forward. He allowed space for that to happen.” —JESSICA KING “He took a city from good to great. He is very engaging and asks the most legitimate questions. He got us to a point where we are building on strength. His followership is unbelievable and it’s because of his leadership.” —BOB SHOEMAKER “What I have seen is this really thoughtful way Mayor Gray created a structure through which all these other things can blossom. He laid the groundwork for conversations, opportunity, art, and activism to happen. It’s really exciting stuff.” — LIBBY MODERN
“Mayor Gray has really set the tone for optimism, energy, and a sense of pride in the city. The best leaders impact the culture and the personality of the community and he has established that. His belief in possibilities and potential really has been infectious.” — PAT B R O G A N

“I grew up in Lancaster and never really thought I’d stay here. But I interned at Mayor Gray’s office and then took a job there. It really drew me into staying in Lancaster and being part of this new vibrant city. Work has been done before him, and work will be done after him, but the explosion of new things over the past 10 years has been absolutely incredible.”

“Mayor Gray’s legacy is his compassion for all of his city residents. He created the poverty commission. It took a lot of courage for him to create that. The fact that the Mayor wanted to address and offer real-life, practical solutions to help poor areas in our city—I was really impacted by that. He has been so compassionate to refugees, the poor, and the homeless. It speaks a lot about him as a man.”
Friends and community leaders expressed gratitude for the powerful impact Mayor Gray has had on the City of Lancaster. Though his time as mayor may be ending, his legacy will continue to shine.

ON THE COVER Lancaster native Skyler Maxey-Wert shares his passion for ballet on the global stage.
Taking the STAGE Over a decade ago in Lancaster, sixyear-old Skyler Maxey-Wert dreamed of dancing ballet on the biggest stages. “A really important thing to hold onto as a dancer is that you should have an idea as to how you want to be and stick to that no matter what,” said Skyler, now age 21 and continuing to forge his professional career. “It’s something you have to work towards every day.” The process began right here in Lancaster City. Skyler trained under visionaries Carolyn Trythall from the former Lancaster School of Ballet and Viktor Yeliohin, now owner of the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy (page 35) from age 6 to age 13. “Working under Viktor was great,” said Skyler. “He always really believed in me as a dancer—even when I didn’t think it was possible for myself.”
28
The local stage provided a foundation for the next step: New York City. Principal Dancers with Geoffrey Ballet visited the studio in Lancaster where they taught a private class and encouraged Skyler to apply to NYC schools. At age 13, Skyler was Big Apple-bound. “When I finally got to New York I thought it was amazing, but also terrifying,” said Skyler. “It really helped me open up a lot and discover who I was.” Through acquiring education from The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre, Skyler strengthened his ability, nurtured his talent, and further developed his ultimate goal to be a premiere ballet dancer. In summer 2014, Skyler pursued a global opportunity as a Corps de

Ballet member at the SemperOper Ballet in Germany. Ever since, Skyler has been working up the hierarchy of dance levels and has currently reached Coryphée, all while keeping an eye on working towards Soloist and Principal roles. From local Lancaster training to taking on the world’s stage, Skyler is proud to continue this inspiring art form wherever he goes. “I love coming home to Lancaster,” adds Skyler. “It’s relaxed, familiar, and I really appreciate it. Coming back to my old studio where it began for this Fig cover photoshoot brought back so many memories.” While here, Skyler helped Victor teach a few classes. Who knows—another young student from Lancaster may be training right now to follow in Skyler’s footsteps as a global ballet artist.

BELIEVE For more than a decade, Fig has been proudly celebrating makers and innovators who continuously imagine and re-imagine our city. By definition, makers are those individuals who make something new where it wasn’t before, or tinker with the existing to make it better. Our city is establishing itself as the “Makers’ Capital”—as entrepreneurs, artists, innovators, and creators of all kinds allow themselves to wonder—and from those wonderings, ideas are birthed, vision is cultivated, artistry is celebrated, and restoration and transformation are given room to breathe. On the following pages, Fig is pleased to showcase many of the makers in our creative city. As our community continues to welcome and celebrate a maker mindset, we reap the benefits of a city brimming and alive with inventive and innovative opportunities and experiences that enrich us all. Discover the artists, creatives, and entrepreneurs who are making history. -

Marc ROBIN FULTON THEATRE
Marc Robin is part of a team of producers, carpenters, electricians, designers, actors, musicians, administrative staff, and volunteers that create breathtaking theatrical experiences right in Lancaster at the Fulton Theatre. Arts have a way of creating space for human understanding, connection, and expression to thrive. It’s a community of storytellers that collectively shares something genuine and magical.
ABOUT THE FULTON The Fulton Theatre is fully devoted to “Engaging Life Through Art.” The Fulton was built in the mid-1800’s as a gathering place for the community. As they head into their 165th year, their mission is to ensure the Fulton continues to be that special meeting place for the Lancaster community. Though each person may experience the show through a different lens, there is a collective opportunity to truly take a break from the hustle and bustle that tends to consume daily lives and, instead, reconnect through a shared experience bursting with art, theatre, and music.

F R E S H FA C E Welcoming new businesses to the City of Lancaster.
Fresh Face: Gallery of Modern Masters Z A C H R I C H A R D S O N graduated from Franklin & Marshall college in 1977 with a major in Geology. He flew jets in the Navy which led to a highly diverse business career, and landed him in Arizona opening an art gallery 12 years ago as a hobby. Thirty-seven years later, when college touring with his son brought him back to his alma mater, he was impressed with the changes at the college and Lancaster and eager to get involved. Zach joined the F&M Alumni Association Board with the intent of finding ways to engage alumni, like himself, who had lost touch with the college after graduation. Struck by the art community and art appreciation in Lancaster, an idea was born.
“Starting an art gallery in Lancaster seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring alumni and students together in a unique learning environment. Presenting an opportunity where alumni could share their wealth of skills and experiences with students in a business environment appeared to be a great vehicle to reconnect 'lost' alumni. At the same time, it offers a virtually unlimited resource for students. In addition, having students connect with alumni while still in college creates a recognized support system for graduates as they venture from college. This connection forms a powerful bond to F&M that will create strong future alumni to support the college.”
28 PENN SQUARE
The Gallery of Modern Masters will be Lancaster’s newest destination gallery. The business is owned and operated by F&M alumni and students and will represent artists from around the globe as well as provide an opportunity for college students to show their art. This summer F&M held its first class related to the gallery—a Lancaster marketing case study. Zach sees the gallery as a place to connect the community to art from around the world while connecting the community to the college and alumni to students. The Gallery of Modern Masters will foster connections and inspire learning across generations, cultures, and continents the way only art can.

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.
Giving Back: Annie Diaz
A N N I E D I A Z B E L I E V E S that giving back is its own reward. Born in Reading, raised partially in Puerto Rico, and now a long-time Lancaster resident, she has always felt compelled to put her heart and soul into her work, family, and community. In addition to working full time and running her own business, she has found an outlet for her passion for people, growth, and her culture in her work at the Latin American Cultural Center (LACC). LACC is a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and preserving Latin American Culture and heritage through various educational, civic, and charitable activities. The organization is also dedicated to promoting cross-cultural experiences in Lancaster and excels at bringing Latinos and non-Latinos together for community events. Annie puts her time, heart, passion, and energy into causes and events that she believes will benefit the entire community. She does this with a heart for connecting people to themselves and to one another. You can engage with LACC on Facebook to find out about exciting opportunities to connect, concerts, STEM events, educational experiences, contests, festivals, and more! “The most important thing that I’ve learned when giving back to the community is that when we give out, it all comes back to us, and so much more.” The reward for all of her hard work? Gratitude, smiling faces, and knowing that she’s making a positive difference for her Latino community and her Lancaster community at the same time, opening doors of opportunity. 2017 SOCIAL MISSION:
Clare House 's Our Volunteers! Clare House coordinates over 200 volunteers annually to do a variety of regular and one-time tasks like cleaning, child care, painting, gardening, utility work, and renovations to help keep overhead as low as possible. By combining these volunteer hours and the donations from the Lancaster community, Clare House can continue supporting families in need. Two recent volunteers, Stephen Daniels and Tony Astarita, have made powerful, immediate impact.
Volunteer Bill Eichorst (from Stephen Daniels Electrical)
stephen daniels is a local electrician that always has Clare House on his busy schedule. He inspects all emergency exit lights, overhead lighting, and other bulbs to ensure the house is in great shape for the families there. “Steve is a genuine tradesman,” said Eva Dombrowski, Executive Director of Clare House. “It’s hard to find service technicians that get the mission and care about the clients like Steve does.” tony astarita has also recently become part of the volunteer team for Clare House. “The best volunteers do exactly what Tony did,” said Dombrowski. “With a heart for the cause he reached out and said ‘What do you need?’” He spent almost 100 hours of hard work that included revitalizing the backyard space with new fencing and playset for the

kids, and securing a grant for garden beds that gives opportunity for the families to grow their own food. These two examples showcase the amazing efforts of Clare House volunteers and the great impact they have on making sure families are sustained, cared for, and comfortable.
Clare House regularly needs volunteers for many different parts of the organization. Become a volunteer for Clare House and you can also make a huge difference for the families here. To donate or learn more about Clare House, visit clarehouselancaster.org.
AT F I G , we believe in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. More than 5,500 sq. ft. of ceilings and walls were installed in a custom configuration that includes the Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster logo and custom blue color along with outstanding acoustical performance. With the help of the Armstrong World Industries and Red Rose Interiors teams, Armstrong acoustical ceilings and walls are part of our clubhouse, making a huge difference in the experience our kids and staff have here every day. In the gym alone, we’ve reduced noise levels by 63% which is truly remarkable. We can actually hear each other now. While it can still be loud at times—because this space is for kids to be kids and play—it’s much more manageable, and we can get each other’s attention and talk when we need to. That’s important to all of us. It’s comfortable and fun to be in here, and we are so proud to have this space in our clubhouse.”

Headache relief through physical therapy A N U N D E R U T I L I Z E D T R E AT M E N T O P T I O N
Physical Therapy is an underutilized treatment option for headaches for a variety of reasons including misdiagnosis, the public’s perception of physical therapists’ focus on musculoskeletal systems, and the traditional reliance on pain medication as a first defense. LANCASTER NEUROSCIENCE & S P I N E A S S O C I AT E S (LNSA) is proud to welcome Jeffrey Bole to their Physical Therapy Team as the Director of Rehabilitation Services. With the addition of Jeffrey, LNSA now offers physical therapy treatment for cervicogenic headaches and migraines, an often unknown and underutilized treatment option. Additionally, Jeffrey brings 20 years of experience and expertise in treatment of lumbar and cervical spinerelated conditions.

Many headache and migraine sufferers often experience concurrent neck pain, tension, stiffness, and/or discomfort with onset of symptoms. Muscles in the cervical region can become tense and tight from things like over use, static postural loading like sitting at a computer, as well as trauma events. These tense and tight muscles can cause referred pain from the cervical region to head and facial regions possibly triggering “migraines.”
gentle joint mobilizations, soft tissue mobilization/myofascial release, and light strengthening and conditioning to improve postural control. The role of the physical therapist is to identify a mechanical trigger of the headache symptoms, restore mobility to the joints, correct muscle imbalances, and manage their symptoms. The challenge lies in determining the type of headache, determining the root cause, and developing an appropriate treatment plan to empower headache sufferers to self-manage their symptoms.
