AUTHENTIC Leading the way through innovation and example.

Authentic: Andrew Snyder F O R S O M E O N E W H O says he stumbled into teaching, Andrew Snyder has really taken to it. As the assistant professor of ceramics at West Chester University, Andrew has drawn on his background as an accomplished ceramics artist. “It’s functional and it’s beautiful,” he says. “And it’s history—we know about ancient cultures because of the shards of pots and bowls archeologists find.” Like falling into teaching, Andrew didn’t think he’d be a potter either. “I was studying graphic design until I took my first ceramics course—it was a requirement. Then I fell in love with clay.” Andrew fosters a creative space and encourages student participation. Andrew worked with the administration to create an internship program for students. Interns do everything in the studio to get it ready and clean up after. It’s paid off. “All the students have gotten much better at everything in the studio—they’re responsible to each other.” Another new feature is the 3D printing lab Andrew championed. “Three-dimensional imaging is the future for digital archiving in museums and galleries,” he says. “So someone across the country or the world can ‘see’ a piece of sculpture.” This skill helps ceramics grads get jobs in the field after graduation as well. Andrew also keeps the studio available for alumni, ensuring a community of artists continues to grow. Andrew Snyder Assistant Professor of Art West Chester University of Pennsylvania

“That interaction is valuable, and practical,” he says. “For our students who’ve graduated, they need a space to work. You just can’t put a gas-fired kiln in your apartment.”

New Leadership

Dr. Christopher Fiorentino President, West Chester University

The new president of West Chester University has taken an unusual path to his post. He’s been at the school his entire teaching and administrative career—uncommon for the modern university system. “Though I’ve been here for 33 years, this is a new beginning and an exciting opportunity,” says Christopher Fiorentino. “People I don’t even know come up and congratulate me,” he says. “It’s humbling.” After receiving his own degrees from Temple University, Chris set out to establish his career as an economics professor, but credits happenstance and luck for his rise to West Chester University’s highest office. “I enjoyed teaching, and I was good at it,” he says. He got tenure, then the department chair opened up. He was encouraged to throw his hat in the ring. He got it, and went on to become the dean of the College of Business and Public Affairs. Chris was named the VP of External Operations before becoming the interim president in April 2016. Much of the success credited to Chris has also brought some challenges: undergraduate student admissions are at capacity. But Chris is passionate about ensuring those students still get a top-notch education, at a reasonable cost. WCU’s reputation, combined with the draw of the borough and the surrounding area, are a powerful combination. “West Chester was just named to a list of the top 50 college towns in America. We’re up there with Ann Arbor and Princeton,” Chris says with a smile. Though Chris is a fixture at WCU, he’s a newcomer compared to his wife Sue. She’s also on the faculty, and is an alumna. “I could not do this without her,” Chris says. “This job comes with a lot of work for the spouse too.” As Chris heads into his first full school term as WCU president, there will be other changes too. He, Sue, and their rescue dog Luna are moving into Tanglewood, the president’s official residence. He looks forward to fall every year, and the energy brought to the campus and borough by the students, old and new. “It’s a fresh start every year, for all of us,” Chris says. “The day the freshmen show up, and you see all those young faces, it’s just electric.”

Introducing

Tori Jueds

Head of School at Westtown School

This fall, Tori Jueds will welcome students to campus as the school begins its 218th year of “educating and preparing its students to be stewards and leaders of a better world.” What drew you to Westtown from Princeton University, where you recently served as Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Students? Our Quaker heritage—without a doubt. I was thrilled to find a community that understands the importance of teaching social responsibility and encouraging spiritual contemplation, a place where students’ educational experiences center around respect, compassion, and integrity. I was also delighted to find a forward-thinking school that has a history of innovation.

44

975 WEST TOWN ROAD

610.399.7900

Why is a Quaker education important? We live in uncertain times. It is our responsibility, individually and together, to enable young people to imagine and then take steps to create a better world. Westtown’s curriculum emphasizes service, social action, and experiential learning. Can an education be socially responsible and academically rigorous at the same time? We believe that one is not developed at the expense of the other; instead, they

work in tandem to prepare students for college and for life. What do you look forward to? I am excited to help empower students to become their most authentic selves, and to support teachers in bringing out the best in their students by means of inspiring educational experiences. After all, the world really does need more Westonians!

Fresh Face: Love Again Local ON A SMOLDERING July evening, a half-hour before closing, there’s a line at the counter at fast-casual vegan restaurant Love Again Local. Owner Elena Mascherino is called out front to help her staff fill the dinner orders, including several of their insanely popular Cuban Sandwich. “We’ve only been open for two weeks,” Elena says. “I had no idea we’d be this busy this soon.” That popularity led to some hiccups in the beginning. “We sold out of the Cuban for the first four days, and I already need more staff,” she says. “But everyone tells me these are good problems to have.” The space is airy, with blackboard walls, wood accents and big windows. This is Elena’s first restaurant experience, though she did build a successful vegan cookie company, Love Chunk Cookies, out of the Artisan Exchange and distributed them locally to Whole Foods, Kimberton Whole Foods, and Mom’s Organic. The cookies are now baked fresh and available at her shop. Before that, she had a long career in retail buying and management, which she left to raise her three children. “After my last kid went to school, I needed to do something that gave me a sense of accomplishment,” she says.

Elena’s dream is a beautiful and busy reality now. “I think we’re going to be really busy when the West Chester University students come back—I’m going to accept the RAM card, and we’re looking into delivery to campus,” she says.

Fresh Face: Dawn Harkins Life Coaching DAWN HARKINS LIVES HER FAITH, and she says she was called to help others through their faith journey. She can fondly recall the security and protection she felt in the hands of God as a young girl. “I felt like the girl in King Kong’s hand,” she says, “Except it was the hand of God.” Dawn is now an AACC Certified Christian Life Coach, and she is serving clients in her newly-opened office on S. Church St. Through her Christ-centered perspective, she helps clients identify and tackle life’s stressors by encouraging hope, fostering personal growth, and sharing coping skills rooted in a biblical framework. “I approach my clients from a foundation of love—to listen and really know them,”

Dawn explains. “Only then will I ask them where God is calling them to change, to find through His grace what they should do to get over their obstacles. Then we will work up an effective plan that they’re accountable to.” The office is calm, cozy, and comfortable. Dawn radiates a warmth and openness that makes her easy to talk to. She listens actively, with a resolve to help her clients heal through love, grace & truth. “We find together where someone is and what they’re trying to solve,” Dawn says. Then they create a strategy that leads to true hope and peace that can only come from living in line with God’s plans and principles.

In addition to one-on-one coaching, Dawn facilitates a group called Moms in Prayer International, for mothers of Henderson High School and of college-aged students. They meet every Tuesday from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at her office. “It’s such a privilege, and so encouraging to have the blessing of community for moms to take one hour a week, come together, and intercede on behalf of our children and schools through prayer.” “I help people find their identity in Christ, to find their purpose every day,” Dawn says. “There’s no one else like you who can glorify God the way you do.”

Fresh Face: Rize Pizza R I Z E P I Z Z A O N South Market does, as it promises, elevate pizza. It’s also elevating the idea of what your local pizza place can be. That evolution is the result of a three-generation obsession with what happens when you mix high-quality ingredients (including a nonbromated flour) with creativity. Jim Haralambidis and Julia Angelos, along with Jim’s son Dean, opened the artisan Rize Pizza downtown West Chester location over the summer—their second location. The first shop is in Broomall. The signature Rize crust—they also offer a more traditional Neapolitan pie—is thick, but light and airy. Jim worked on creating this crust for 20 years, and in earnest for seven. “He’s kind of a creative genius,” says Dean (he’s the third generation pizza-maker). Jim took notes and photos, documenting and perfecting his recipes until he was satisfied he had something original and delicious. The sesame seeds on the bottom of the pizza add a full and toasty flavor. “Jim’s the visionary when it comes to the cuisine and the design of this place,” says Julia. “I concentrate on finetuning the business side. Together we all make a great team and focus on each important part of our business, which is necessary when starting this new venture in West Chester. There’s a vibrant food scene here, people appreciate quality, and it’s a great town,” she says. As Rize heads into fall, look for an elevation of the dining experience too—with wait service at night, along with china plates and glassware fit for the BYOB crowd. “We see this as adding a dining destination to a foodie town,” says Julia. “We’re not just another pizza shop.”

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.

Susan Ingram, President of Walk Her Home

Giving Back: Susan Ingram S U S A N I N G R A M I S taking on a problem that’s stymied law enforcement for decades. It’s a national and international problem, and it’s created more slaves in the world today than during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Child sex trafficking: Susan wants to fight it. Don’t bet against her. Confident, strong, and straightforward, Susan’s a survivor of sexual assault herself. She says she was called by God to create Walk Her Home, a nonprofit dedicated to raising money for organizations that give support, provide housing, and offer job training for victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Pennsylvania. “It’s modern-day slavery,” Susan explains.

Though Susan formed Walk Her Home, a 501(c)3 charity, in January of this year, their first public fundraiser is already slated for Oct. 7, at the Westtown School. Traffickers prey on vulnerable tweens and early teenagers. “Almost every girl feels like she’s not pretty enough, no one will love her, and that’s when they’re preyed upon. They’ll arrange to meet at a mall, at a park, or after school.” The trafficker manipulates her and creates a bond of trust. Buys her things—jewelry, clothes—and professes his love. Or she’s promised a job as a model, actress, or dancer. Susan’s passionate about educating parents because it happens right here in Chester County. “The profile for victims

484.888.1362

is girls 11-14 years old,” Susan says. “It can happen in any family.” The best defense as a parent is to be involved. “Know who they talk to on phone apps—that’s usually where this starts,” she says. “Know where they are, be involved in their lives.” Come do something about it and join the 5K walk and kids’ fun run on Oct. 7, followed by a fall festival. Go to walkherhome.org to learn more about the 5K and how to help— donations and volunteers are needed. “People don’t like to talk about this,” Susan says. “But we need to—or it will never stop. “We can end child sex trafficking in our lifetime.” To learn more, visit walkherhome.org.

Your child goes by many names...

But when he gets sick, the only name you need to remember is Chester County Hospital. Accidents happen and children get sick all the time, usually on the weekends or in the middle of the night. When that happens, turn to Chester County Hospital, where pediatricians from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are available in the Emergency Department to provide child-friendly care for your little pediatric inpatient unit staffed by CHOP Pediatricians and the only Level III NICU in the county.

S M AL L T H I N G S M A K E A B I G D I F F E R E N C E . NEWBORN & PEDIATRIC CARE AT CHESTER COUNTY HOSPITAL Emergency hospital visits can be frightening for children and parents alike. In our Emergency Department, we are uniquely prepared to provide for the special needs of children and families, pediatric and neonatal medicine. Our innovative program combines the extensive resources of CHOP with the caring, experienced staff and excellent facilities of Chester County Hospital. Child-Friendly Emergency Department

for children including games, tablets and a collection of family-favorite DVDs. The CHOP pediatricians who work in our hospital’s inpatient Pediatrics Unit attend to your child’s immediate needs in our Emergency Department, and provide continuity of care for children who may need to be admitted for observation or treatment. Your CHOP inpatient pediatrician will also communicate seamlessly with your child’s own primary care physician. CHOP Newborn Care & Pediatric Care Because our inpatient pediatricians and neonatologists are all on staff at CHOP, we’re able to bring a world-renowned level of expertise and care to our youngest patients.
