This winter season marks eight years of spreading the love-local message through Fig. When our team sat down to dream up this issue, we thought about capturing the beauty found all around us in this historically rich community. For our annual Holiday Shop Local Guide, we set out to highlight our unique neighborhood retail shops where you can find one-of-a-kind gifts to delight friends and family. On several crisp, fall evenings our front cover and inside fashion spreads were photographed under an illuminated harvest moon. Our crew traveled to iconic spots in the Lehigh Valley, capturing the exquisite nightlife and extraordinary architecture for which it is widely recognized. The evening-lit Steel Stacks served as the perfect backdrop to showcase our community—honoring the past and present while looking toward the future.

Giving Back | Making a difference in the lives of others

Giving Back: Leigh Ehrlich L O C A L FA S H I O N I S TA L E I G H E H R L I C H spends her days working in her luxuriously decorated home office, which she designed around a clear desk so she can always “see her shoes.” Unlike most people, she still dresses up to work from home every day, using the opportunity to experiment with her outfits, applying and flexing her own office fashion rules. When she’s not working her day job as the CFO for Hospital Operations at Lehigh Valley Health Network, she spends time dreaming up ways of giving back to her community, especially through one of her passions—fashion. Over the past year and a half, like all of us, Leigh became very aware of the struggle small shops were facing in the Lehigh Valley, and she wanted to find a way to specifically help local female-owned clothing shops. She decided if people weren’t going out for fashion, she’d bring fashion to them. After recruiting a small group of friends, family, and neighbors to participate as both models and audience members alike, she opened up her backyard and threw an impromptu fashion show featuring clothing and designs from two of her favorite local shops—AM Luxe and Lara Bly Designs. What resulted was something quite remarkable. People connected once again, safely and very fashionably, and everyone involved was more than thrilled with how it turned out.

“Everyone was dressed up, smiling and really, truly, happy,” Leigh said. With the first show being such a hit, Leigh has plans to continue this fashion show every year, expanding it to help more of her neighbors showcase their merchandise. Growing the show undoubtedly means more details and plans to work out from her gorgeous office, but Leigh is up for the challenge. She hopes the new annual event will continue to improve and bring together this community she loves. Leigh said “We all just need to work together, and we can do it with confidence and style”...and that’s exactly what she did.

Judith Adele Agentis Charitable Foundation | jaacf.org G O I N G B E YO N D From its founding in 2013 until the COVID-19 lockdown, the Judith Adele Agentis Charitable Foundation (JAACF) delivered nearly 20,000 delicious meals to individuals spending precious last moments with a loved one at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Bethlehem.

“We were comforted to know we were not invisible as we grieved the imminent loss of our mother,” recalls Carol, a hospice guest. A lunch delivered by JAACF was her father’s first meal in four days. He was reluctant to leave his wife’s bedside. It’s a common situation that Bob Agentis, founder and chairman of JAACF, knows well—when he lost his wife Judy of 47 years to pancreatic cancer and the only option for food was a single vending machine. Currently, there is one palliative care physician nationwide for 1,300 people diagnosed with a lifethreatening illness, and one for every 20,000 patients with a severe chronic illness. With an aging population and an increasing number of patients with life-limiting illnesses or chronic conditions, current palliative needs are not fully met. Therefore in early 2020, in partnership with St. Luke’s University Health Network, JAACF founded the Judith Adele Agentis Palliative Care Scholarship Fund. To date, 15 nurses have received the scholarship for palliative and hospice care certifications. In addition, the scholarship program will be expanded to include the Oncology and ICU departments.
