ISSUE 36 / FALL 2022 / COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA / THE ARTS & CULTURE ISSUE 5

There's a quote that's applicable in all aspects of life, but even more so in today's world: "We only appreciate what we have when we lose it." One thing that we as a community lost for a couple of years, which I believe hurt us most in the fall, was gathering together in Fallperson.inColumbia, SC is overflowing with energy as the heat of the summer fades away, family vacations come to a close, and our city once again becomes a hub of activity. University of South Carolina students have arrived back in town, students of all ages have begun the new school year, Carolina kicks off a new season of tailgating and football at Williams-Brice, the South Carolina State Fair entertains us all for two weeks, local theaters offer us amazing live entertainment, the Columbia City Ballet and the Columbia Classical Ballet provide spectacular iconic shows to enjoy, the SC Philharmonic comes together for stunning performances, Soda City brings great artisans and makers to Main Street every Saturday morning, rooftops open up for evening drinks with friends, pumpkin patches and hay rides provide a memorable outdoor family activity, oysters begin arriving for oyster roasts, annual festivals take center stage, seasonal craft beers are brewed and poured at the local breweries... our city offers us a multitude of places and reasons for us to gather together. I don't know about you, but I am looking forward to doing as much gathering with friends and family as I can this season.

At Fig, we're entering into this season with a deep sense of gratitude. We are incredibly lucky to live in a city that has passionate and talented people to organize, run, donate, and volunteer to make a thriving arts and culture scene for us to all to enjoy. This growing scene is attracting the best musicians, artists, actors, dancers, creators, and more to call Columbia home, and as they do so, they're bringing their incredible talents to town and making it a vibrant city. We look forward to you flipping through the pages of our fall issue and supporting our beautiful community. A new season also offers opportunity and growth, and with that, we want to introduce you to Ashleigh. She has been hard at work, carefully pouring over each page to ensure that we're showcasing Columbia in the very best light. She has begun to take over my role as Director of Fig and I could not be more proud of the work she has done. I will always be here as support, but I am excited as our team grows and we continue to serve our community well. She loves Columbia and the people in it, and I'm sure you'll enjoy her voice as well.

She’s already inspiring the next generation of artists with her talents. “It feels good to leave my mark on Columbia,” Ija said. “I’ve always been told that you have to leave South Carolina to be inspired and to create beautiful artwork, but that’s not true. My community has shown me otherwise. I love when younger kids come out to my murals and they want to show me their artwork, or they’re sitting there sketching. I wish I had experiences like this when I was younger! It means a lot to me to be able to inspire the younger generation to create their own artwork for our city.”

Tunnel Vision, a mural that has been a part of Columbia’s art scene since 1975, was one of a handful of public art pieces before muralists began splashing the town with their imaginations and beautiful colors. There’s one area of town though that’s untouched that Ija has her eyes on. “My dream location would be a bridge,” Ija said. “There are so many great ones, and it doesn’t matter to me which one.”

When it comes to advocating for disability rights and justice, Able South Carolina is not only leading the charge in our state, but their efforts are also causing major ripple effects nationwide and beyond. Whether it is speaking out for fair employment and housing opportunities or standing up for equal access to transportation and educational opportunities, Able South Carolina is helping individuals with disabilities build confidence, community, and connection, and encouraging them to always be their own Eightadvocate.yearsago,

Advocacy Day for Access & Independence was created as an initiative in the State Plan for Independent Living in 2014 . That first event brought three hundred South Carolinians together and was an opportunity to speak openly about the everyday challenges faced by those with disabilities. Over the years, Advocacy Day has created many more conversations surrounding disability rights and forged deeper connections between law makers and community members. To date, this single day event held each April welcomes members from over 30 participating organizations across South Carolina to the State House and addresses systemic “barriers” in place against individuals with disabilities.

Advocating for change, however, does not stop with one large gathering per year.

Mission |

One major topic of conversation in recent years has been a focus on employment barriers and the persistence of subminimum wage payments to people with disabilities. Even with the passing of the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act, meant to protect individuals with disabilities from employment and wage discrimination, there is still a loophole to be found. The Fair Labor Standards Act, established in 1938, has allowed employers to pay their workers less than minimum wage if it is deemed their productivity at work may be impacted. Facilities called “sheltered workshops” or “employment training centers” are often hubs for this behavior and employees with disabilities are paid only pennies on the Angeladollar.Greene, worked in a sheltered workshop for 21 years between

Social Mission Able South Carolina

Social Making a difference in

Able South Carolina is constantly working with local, state, and national law makers to promote access, equity, and inclusion for all people with disabilities. They also work to draw attention to areas in which severe limitations are place on disabled people because of state and national jurisdictions.

In 2015, Angela moved to a new agency that allowed her to explore her creativity and talents rather than try and fit her into a box. Now she works at the University of South Carolina as a dining room attendant, is working towards her GED, and is a founding member and current secretary of IMPACT SC. Angela shared her story to an attentive crowd this April during Advocacy Day for Access and Independence as she and several others spoke about their unfair treatment during employment and the importance of dismantling subminimum wage. In May of 2022, Able South Carolina was able to celebrate a major legislative milestone when the bill to end subminimum wage in South Carolina was signed into law by Governor Henry McMaster. The passing of this bill makes South Carolina only the twelfth state nationwide and third in the Southeast to break away from federal law, signifying one of the biggest changes in disability rights in the state to date.

1994 - 2015. She had a Monday – Friday schedule and was paid only $3.00 per hour. “If I could put into words my experiences in a sheltered workshop, what words would they be? Undervalued, not appreciated, low expectations, no potential,” said Angela. “I always believed that community employment was possible, but I didn’t always have the support to achieve employment.”

“Ending subminimum wage is finally employment justice for people with disabilities!” Said Kimberly Tissot, President, and CEO of Able South Carolina. “We are thrilled by the result, ensuring that people with disabilities are valued and equal members of South Carolina’s competitive workforce.” While Able South Carolina has achieved many incredible feats in their activism over the past several years, they know there is still much to be done and many more areas for improvement. They continue to focus on their mission to equip, educate, and advocate for individuals with disabilities and aim to serve as a place for individuals to come together and make our state a more inclusive place for everyone.

A fresh start this fall

After a busy summer season, fall feels like the ideal time for a fresh start. The kids are going back to school and adults are able to settle back into a regular pattern of life. Why not take advantage of the opportunity to begin new habits by getting into a healthy routine? One way to do this is to simply add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Don't worry so much about what foods you might need to take out, but instead focus on what you are able to add in to your daily meals. Add a handful of kale to your pasta sauce, serve a salad as a side with dinner, or sneak some greens into your morning smoothie. By making small changes, you'll see a big difference over time.

Get active anytime, anywhere! A rigid workout plan isn’t a requirement for a healthy lifestyle. Under the guidance of the friendly team of coaches at Anytime Fitness, you can build achievable, sustainable habits that fit into your daily schedule. They’ll encourage you to incorporate movement into your everyday life in ways that you find enjoyable. Try taking advantage of the cooler fall mornings and get outdoors for a yoga session in the park or a long walk along the river. Spotlight The Heath & Wellness Center at Nephron

WHEN IT COMES TO INNOVATION, Nephron Pharmaceuticals is an industry leader. The corporation is a top manufacturer of respiratory and 503B outsourcing medications, and they are one of the largest blow-fill-seal manufacturing companies in the world. Production occurs locally in West Columbia at their 700,000+ square foot facilities, and they have recently unveiled yet another cutting-edge addition to the company: the Nephron Health and Wellness Center, powered by Marathon Health. The brand-new health center was designed with the primary goal of improving employee wellness by providing primary care and acute health services. Through a partnership with healthcare company Marathon Health, the center is staffed with a medical doctor and a nurse practitioner to carry out this initiative. And perhaps the best part of the project is that it is onsite at Nephron, giving employees easy access to this valuable resource. As Marathon Health representative Vincent Pascual mentioned, "In many cases, people won't seek healthcare for various reasons. This makes it easy for them. Not only is it onsite, it is an added benefit at no cost to employees, confidential, quiet, easy to get an appointment, and has a welcoming Theseatmosphere."elements remove many of the common barriers that prevent people from seeking healthcare. Nephron believes in the importance of wellness, and they strive to ensure their employees understand its value as well. This project allows them to do that in a way that is convenient and usable. Nephron CEO Lou Kennedy recently announced William Harman, MD, as the wellness center doctor. He is board certified in family medicine with over 20 years of comprehensive healthcare experience. He has worked in-patient medical care, broad ranging urgent care, and most recently more than 10 years of office-based familyoriented primary care with a focus on collaborative physician-patient relationships. Dr. Harman believes that preventive medicine is the cornerstone of a patient’s overall well-being.

Dr. Harman is passionate about offering comprehensive family-centered medical care to patients of all ages. He is excited to join the Nephron Pharmaceuticals Employee Health & Wellness Center Powered by Marathon Health.

The Health and Wellness Center is available to all Nephron employees who are eligible for benefits. Additionally, their family members have access as a part of their insurance plan. It is a family practice, so the facility can serve a wide range of ages to help as many people as possible. And while the project mainly assists Nephron employees and their families, it also indirectly contributes to the good of our community, country, and world.

"The life-saving medications we produce are vital to so many people across the community, and the work of Nephron employees is the reason those people are able to get what they need. The healthier our employees are, the better they can do the work that must be done to get these medications to the people who need them."

There is no doubt it will still have a positive impact on the health of our society overall. But in order to truly reap the benefits that the project offers, the employees must put it to use. There are a multitude of potential opportunities for growth within the center, depending on people's needs. Because of its close proximity to the Nephron facilities and its limited patient base, not to mention the ease of access, the Health and Wellness Center staff have the opportunity to build real relationships with the people they treat. As the doctor and nurse practitioner get to know their patients, they'll gain entry to a ore detailed view of their health. And from there, they can determine whether additional services should be added to their current offerings of primary and acute care. The possibilities include physical therapy, mental, occupational, and behavioral health services, and beyond. The more employees use the center, the more resources will become available to Employeesthem. are encouraged to visit the Health and Wellness Center for whatever needs may arise. They are certainly able to utilize its services in the case of illness. However, it was designed to promote proactive healthcare. The center does not simply exist to take care of the sick or respond to disease, but also to advocate for health to avoid sickness altogether whenever possible. "Nephron is a leader in the industry of preventative care and quick access," said Vincent Pascual of Marathon Health. "This facility provides that for their employees." In the creation of this project, one of the goals was to give employees health education and preventative care to support overall wellness in everyday life, not just when they are dealing with illness. This could look like educating people on how to manage preexisting medical conditions, helping them

Dr. Harman grew up in Lexington County and is a graduate of Gilbert High School and Clemson University. He earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia and completed his family medicine residency at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He and his wife have been married for 20 years. They have a daughter who will enroll at Clemson University Honors College this fall and a son who attends Lexington High School.

"Nephron is a large company, and we provide essential services," said Chief Clinical Officer Stephanie Simmonds.

develop a plan for weight loss, devising a schedule to quit smoking, or simply performing regular checkups to ensure health. And when a patient is sick, rather than only prescribing medications, the medical staff is committed to digging deeper to understand the bigger picture behind the symptoms. In addition to the potential for expansion of services and the exceptional care that is provided, another benefit of employee use of the facility is that it can lead to improved company health. Nephron's partner for this project, Marathon Health, has the capability to identify and interpret data as an indicator of employee health as a whole. The staff at the Health and Wellness Center will pass along important statistics while keeping all confidential information private. Marathon Health will observe any data trends that become apparent and then present pertinent findings to Nephron. If any health risks to the employee population are brought to light, Nephron will be able to take the opportunity to make changes or provide additional resources to protect their staff. After all, they believe that their people are the key to their success. Their wellbeing is the top priority of this Theinitiative.implementation of the Health and Wellness Center makes it abundantly clear that the leaders at Nephron Pharmaceuticals truly care. They care for their community, desiring to have the best, healthiest team to produce essential medications for those in need. And they care about their employees-not simply for productivity's sake, but also because they value the community they have cultivated. Nephron has sponsored the Health and Wellness Center completely, meaning its services come at no cost to employees and their families. This is a very unique project; not every employer provides a healthcare center like this for their staff. And so this is yet another example of Nephron's innovation and ingenuity as a company and an employer.
