What’s in a name?

Fig Authentic: Afa Anoa’i, Jr.

WHILE HE MAY BE THE NAMESAKE of a man who helped spawn professional wrestling’s Samoan dynasty—as well as cousin of pro wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson—Afa Anoa’i, Jr. has certainly made a name for himself.

WRESTLING PRODIGY

During the summer before eighth grade, Afa was inspired to officially begin his wrestling career while in Austria with his father, who was running an international tour there. “Not without proper training” was his dad’s requirement for joining the tour. So after a three-day immersive training on a hotel room floor with his WWE star older brothers, he officially stepped into the ring.

FOOTBALL STAR

While he never stopped wrestling, his “freakishly large” size got him recruited to Freedom High School’s varsity football team. After three years as an allconference defensive tackle, he accepted a spot on the UConn Huskies college team. Poised to be a first-round NFL draft pick after his freshman season, he blew out his knee and his career came to a premature end.

TRAINER AND ENTERTAINER

After continuing his pro wrestling career as WWE superstar Manu, Afa also discovered his passion for training other wrestlers.

Amidst the pandemic, he opened The Battlefield Pro Wrestling Center in Brodheadsville, where he’s already helped over 16 hopefuls make their WWE debuts. His moves were also sought out on a different stage —the theater. Afa took on the role of choreographer for an off-Broadway production of The Last Match , and was recently recognized with a Broadway World Regionals 2023 award for “Best Choreography of a Play or Musical.”

HIS FAVORITE NAME

Despite all his career success, “Dad” is truly the name Afa loves most. “Having kids put my life into focus,” says Afa. “I do it all for them.”

Afa’s son and daughter have already started wrestling training. “You can’t keep them out of the ring,” says the proud dad. Sounds familiar.

FOR OVER 15 YEARS, Wind Creek Bethlehem has been a strong supporter of one of the area’s most notable nonprofits, Cops ‘n’ Kids Lehigh Valley—an organization that seeks to “connect kids and community through literacy.” Cops ‘n’ Kids Lehigh Valley works to unite the community— including police officers, municipal leaders, and retired teachers—and schools with literacy-focused events and enrichment activities.

One of the organization’s most revered initiatives includes their ongoing collection and distribution of new or gently used books throughout the Lehigh Valley. To date, Cops ‘n’ Kids Lehigh Valley has distributed over 1.1 million books.

“Our success has been possible because we have been joined by

organizations that have embraced our mission wholeheartedly, again and again,” said Beverly Bradley, President, Cops ‘n’ Kids Lehigh Valley Inc. “Without a doubt, one of those organizations is Wind Creek Bethlehem.”

Every year, Wind Creek Bethlehem engages in volunteer efforts, organizing book drives and providing other means of support.

“We simply could not do all that we do without the support and encouragement of thoughtful community partners like Wind Creek Bethlehem,” said Beverly.

Everyone should have a leave-in treatment—can’t say enough about that! If you like to be outside, at the beach, or in the pool, make sure it has a UV filter. This will add softness and shine to your hair. Every on-the-go woman also needs a dry shampoo!

SPEAKING OF BUSY WOMEN, HOW DO YOU BALANCE IT ALL?

By practicing what I preach and making sure to schedule time for myself just like I recommend for my clients. Practicing yoga, getting facials, and making room for friends all contribute to my well-being. I also never skip my hair appointments! The time I spend in the chair is just as valuable as the time I spend behind it.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD CLIENTS BOOK HAIR APPOINTMENTS?

I love spending time with my guests, so I invite them my back every six weeks. It’s good for the mind, body, soul, and of course, the hair!

The Southside is near and dear to my heart. I am grateful to be positioned in the community where I grew up. This part of town is lively and filled with creativity. I’m thrilled to be a part of it. If I can inspire one person from our community to pursue their passions, I will feel successful.

WHAT IS ONE “FUN FACT” YOU’VE DISCOVERED FROM BEING IN THIS FIELD?

The one thing that seems to be surprisingly consistent is how rough we are with our hair. I see it all the time—clients brushing through their hair aggressively. Moravian University names first Dean of the School of Behavioral and Community Health

THE NEWLY FORMED SCHOOL WILL BE LED BY DR. FREDA GINSBERG, MBA

LIKE THE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, THE MORAVIAN UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF BEHAVIORAL AND COMMUNITY HEALTH WAS FORMED AS A RESULT OF THE 2021 TRANSITION TO UNIVERSITY STATUS and allows deanlevel faculty to lead newly formed schools within the university structure. Dr. Ginsberg joins Moravian after serving as a Full Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies in Counseling Psychology at Holy Family University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania since 2016.

“President Grigsby has been talking about the school of behavioral and community health for a few years, and we are very much aware of the mental health crisis facing our nation. I am thrilled to see his vision of supporting this need come to fruition with the hire of

Dr. Ginsberg, and I am confident in her ability to move us forward quickly,” said Carol Traupman-Carr, provost of Moravian University. “Dr. Ginsberg’s background and education mirror our liberal arts educational mission with the global focus of our Elevate experience, and she has a genuine interest in helping people. Dr. Ginsberg has taught at well-regarded institutions around the United States and Canada and is an expert in working with diverse populations in academia and counseling. Her scholarship focuses on the intergenerational transmission of Holocaust trauma. She also investigates the topics of Jewish issues more broadly (for example Jewish women in counseling) as well as counseling topics that directly pertain to underserved and marginalized populations.

Fig Giving Back: Boys & Girls Club of Bethlehem

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB Program Director Scott Perry was an elementary school aged boy dealing with his parents’ separation when he walked into the Club for the first time. And he never left. At age 19, Scott was offered full-time employment with the nonprofit. Soon after, he was joined by Unit Director Lisa Ramos, who began her career building out programs for girls at the Club and throughout the years took on many programmatic and administrative roles.

For decades, countless youth in Bethlehem have found a safe space for mentorship, development, and sports at the Boys & Girls Club, thanks largely to Scott and Lisa.

From the likes of professional basketball player Darrun Hilliard who played rec basketball in the Club, to troubled teens turned successful military professionals, to today’s doctors, lawyers, financiers, teachers, and everyday moms and dads living in the Lehigh Valley—so many have been impacted by this dynamic duo.

Then and now, within the walls of the Club, kids are seen, heard, loved and cared for. Connections made here shape futures and last a lifetime. For most, it’ll always be a place to call home.
