The days are getting shorter and the nights are cooler, which can only mean one thing: the changing of the season is upon us! If you’re anything like me, it’s exciting to see and feel the changes as we usher in the fall and winter seasons here in the South. The local boutiques emerge with the latest, coziest fashion trends. The culinary wizards at our town’s restaurants update their menus to the newest seasonal cuisines including savory new dishes and tasty cocktails. This quiet little town comes alive with events, plays, and gatherings inviting all to experience in her best qualities.

Joy
Aiken has a long, rich history of being known as the “Winter Colony” for visitors near and far. It’s a place to get away from the hustle and bustle, to enjoy mild fall and winter temperatures, and a place to take a deep breath as you slow things down a bit. While some simply come to holiday here, others have found that they never want to leave, and they plant their family’s roots here. There’s an uncanny ability to marry cosmopolitan and rustic lifestyles here. It’s no wonder it seems only natural to show up to dinner or cocktails in riding boots!

As we roll into the new season, I invite you to take a leisurely stroll around, and soak in all that Aiken has to offer. There’s a long list of events, tastings, tours, festivities, and things to do to fill your days, nights, weekends, and everything in between. This time of year is also special because it tends to show the giving nature of Aiken. The charities we have here are second to none. They serve and love deeply, enticing others to join in to make a difference. This year, take some time to sit with a few of these charities and nonprofits, and see how you can join in their mission to make an impact in someone’s life whether it’s by donating your time or services, or by giving monetarily. Each offering is a gift and one that is appreciated beyond words. This issue is a special one. It is full of locally owned businesses, bright entrepreneurs, restaurants, professional services, charities, and nonprofits that help make Aiken who she is today. They are shaping the way in which we serve, connect, and gather together. It is with great honor and excitement that we share with you our fall and winter issue! Get all of the hands in your family— the oldest, the youngest, and every hand in between—involved in baking new holiday memories this year.
Baking new memories
When it comes to the holidays, the biggest and most memorable celebrations are focused on gathering around the table to enjoy a meal together with your family. It's when you come together with grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, parents, and cousins to reminisce on the year past and look forward to the year to come. At the center of it all: the food. Grandma's traditional pecan pie at Thanksgiving. Your uncle's famous macaroni and cheese. Your sister's incredible gingerbread cookies. Plum Pudding has all of the ingredients you need to create a magical holiday experience for your family this year. They have the tools that every chef and sous chef in your family need to recreate all of your favorite recipes. Rolling pins to roll out the pie crust, cookie cutters to cut out the perfect shapes to decorate, Smithey Ironware roasters for baking the Thanksgiving Turkey, festive drinkware for the holiday toast, and more. Plum Pudding has any bakeware, tool, or accessory that you need in your kitchen to prepare your feast!

Sweet, healthy, smiles The sugary treats that leave your child or the kid in you jumping for joy this season often come with a hidden surprise. What lurks beneath the candy you'll be sinking your teeth into are sugar-attracted bacteria that contribute to enamel decay and make your mouth more susceptible to a range of threats, from cavities through sensitivity to tooth loss. If Santa is not the only one with a sweet craving this year, a routine check-up with Dr. Carson Kight and her team with Distinctive Dentistry of Aiken is the best way to protect your oral health. On the next level of dental care I N T H E D E N T I S T- PAT I E N T R E L AT I O N S H I P, trust comes from a combination of knowledge, technology, experience, and customized care. It’s a very special bond, so you want to get it right with an all-star team in a comfortable and caring environment you can find in the private dental multispecialty practice center founded by Dr. RoblesVelez and Dr. Shawn Velez. Trust us—you can rely on the skilled surgical, endodontics, and administrative teams they lead to ensure your optimal oral health.
As we approach the end of the year and my husband and I take stock of where we’ve been and where we’re going, we can’t help but feel an abundance of gratitude for the gifts of life we both received and made possible for our family, staff, patients, and our community at large. One of our proudest milestones this year has been embarking on a personal health and wellness journey to achieve healthier eating and exercise habits, greater work-life balance, and a more consistent practice of mindfulness. The decision to actively treat ourselves as work in progress triggered changes in the macrocosm of our family and work lives that culminated with the launch of Advanced On The Move, a walking/running club that allows us to help the people surrounding us become the next best version of themselves by putting their healthy living plans into action like we did. At a time when the health and longevity of small businesses are still at risk, we are especially thankful for our patients, who continue to entrust us with their oral health needs, and our devoted surgical and administrative team, without whom we would not be standing here today harvesting the fruits of our labors. Last but not least, we are grateful for our son and two daughters and the gift of watching them grow, learn, and become who they are meant to be. What milestones and successes from this year fill your heart with gratitude? And what would you want to accomplish next? We hope you take some time to celebrate the year at hand and that your mindful reflections inspire you to turn your next goals into a long-lasting and joyful reality! — Dr. Jennibeth Robles-Velez Root Canals

Social Mission | Making a difference in the lives of others unearthed amongst those attending. Each evening will be centered around a common theme found in the current exhibition, and the storytelling will be accompanied by wine paired with the theme. “We have so much in common, yet every sit-in is unique,” said local author and host Gary Finnan. In a supportive space where people can listen and be heard, the voice of human experience guides the evening. Where will it take us? Stories From the Big Chair is a perfect fit for everyone that is excited to engage with the power and craft of storytelling, and who are invested in keeping the art of storytelling alive. The stories shared around the big chair are true as remembered by the storyteller. “Having the wine selections from Solovino intertwined with the sharing of stories from what I consider to be five incredible community thought leaders creates a truly special evening for those in attendance,” said Caroline Gwinn, Executive Director at Aiken Center for the Arts. Plan an evening out this season at Aiken Center for the Arts where you can enjoy both exceptional stories and wine as you gather around for Stories From the Big Chair. Limited seating is available at each Stories From the Big Chair event. Reserve your chair for $20.
