spring Sparky Knowles to the starting gate! Sparky Knowles to the starting gate, please!
A note from Fig
Sound familiar? Well, if you have ever had the privilege of attending the annual spring Steeplechase, you will recognize that as one of the most iconic phrases that truly signifies that springtime has arrived in Aiken. If you are new here, I encourage you to attend this family-friendly and fun event, and take in all that Aiken is at her very core. Springtime in Aiken is truly one of tradition and unforgettable experiences. It is perhaps in this season that Aiken comes alive with traditions as old as time that still hold true today. The tents, the attire, the parties, the horses, the golf tournaments... all speak to and embody this season in our town. This spring, get outside and try something new! Whether it’s learning a new sport like tennis or golf, or finally starting those horseback riding lessons you’ve always wanted to do, all are wonderful ways to broaden both your experiences and your social circles in Aiken. Get connected and enjoy the
beautiful outdoor lifestyle that our town has to offer. The Village at Woodside and downtown Aiken offer some of the best shopping, dining, and lattes around. Soak in the sights and smells as the azaleas begin to bloom and the local golf courses show off their lush, curated greens. Aiken also has some amazing ways to connect, whether to meet new friends or find your new date night spot. The opportunity to dine alfresco pool side at The Willcox or watch golfers come in from the course at Woodside Country Club’s golf adjacent patio, is truly is one of the best reasons to get out and grab lunch or dinner this season. Or perhaps grab some wine from Cork and Cap, pack a picnic, and find a shady spot at Hopelands Gardens. Whatever your speed, there is always something new to discover and enjoy here. To all my friends, new and old, welcome to our 2022 spring issue of Fig Aiken! I hope you love this issue as much as we have loved putting it together for you. WITH GRATITUDE, ERIN TRUITT & THE FIG TEAM

Social Mission | Making a difference in the lives of others
Jim Rhodes, President
Social Mission: Aiken Equine Rescue E A C H Y E A R , Fig Aiken partners with an organization that makes our surrounding community a better place to live. For 2022, we are proud to support and share the mission of Aiken Equine Rescue, a local non-profit organization that has been rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming displaced and neglected horses as well as Off the Track Thoroughbreds since 2006. While their rescue facility is local to the Aiken community, their impact statewide and beyond is mighty. They currently operate as one of the largest equine rescues in the southeastern United States. Over the past 16 years, Aiken Equine Rescue has rehomed over 1,400 equines, welcomed thousands of visitors for on-site tours, and provided countless educational and interactive program opportunities for a wide variety of groups. In April of 2021, the rescue suffered a devastating loss when their main barn

and office building was completely destroyed in a fire. While luckily no animal or human was seriously injured, the operational and equipment loss was immense. “When we lost the barn in the fire we thought we lost the heart of our organization, but we realized that wasn’t the case at all,” said Jim Rhodes, President of Aiken Equine Rescue. “The heart of our organization is in the determination of our volunteers and the outpouring of community support that we are thankful to experience every day.” While the team is still early in the process of rebuilding, they are hopeful for what is to come in the future and are committed to returning to their full scale of operations. “We still have a long way to go,” said Pam Patron, Volunteer Marketing Coordinator for Aiken Equine Rescue. “Right now, the hardest thing is having

to turn down horses that we know are hurting, simply because we do not have the facilities or the medical equipment available to give them the proper care that they deserve.” Aiken Equine Rescue has started a Capital Funding campaign to raise money for the construction of a new barn. They have a variety of donation options and are offering some incredible ways that you can be a lasting part of their legacy to rebuild. Fundraising efforts include buying a custom engraved brick or tile to be used in the construction of the new facility, or for higher-level donations, having the opportunity for naming rights on featured areas of the barn. If you are interested in helping the Aiken Equine Rescue during this time of recovery and revitalization please email aikenequinerescue@gmail.com or visit aikenequinerescue.org
Angell Molony Law currently serves clients out of their offices in Aiken and Greenville, SC. From left: Aaron Angell, Jonathan Waller, Kevin Molony
Not your average law firm Founders Aaron Angell and Kevin Molony recognized the need for things to be done differently as a law firm. From establishing their statewide practice of collecting on unpaid judgments for their bank, corporate and individual clients, the firm has been built simply on results through relationships. Recognizing that same need for things to be done differently, this time in real estate closings, Angell Molony has welcomed seasoned real estate attorney and longtime friend of Kevin and Aaron’s, Jonathan Waller, to the team to lead the real estate closing division.
By focusing on relationships with members of the community, the attorneys at Angell Molony are able to bring an efficiency, timeliness and competence to both residential and commercial real estate closings second to none in and around Aiken. Results and relationships are often unaccompanied in typical dealings with law firms these days, but that’s why Angell Molony is different, or as some of their valued clients have voiced-not your average law firm. 210 NEWBERRY STREET NW

Authentic | Leading the way through innovation and example
Authentic Ellen Geddes LIFE CHANGED IN AN I N S TA N T F O R E L L E N G E D D E S shortly before her 23rd birthday. Born and raised in Aiken, Ellen grew up as an avid equestrian. She spent most of her time in the saddle and at 10 years old, she began competing first in eventing and later in dressage. But a car accident changed everything when it left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair. While she was rehabbing at the Shepard Center in Atlanta, she was introduced to the world of fencing, specifically, the world of parafencing. No longer able to easily ride horses, she decided to try her hand at fencing. Ellen quickly discovered that not only did she love to fence, but she was a natural at it. “I learned how to fence as I learned how to exist in a wheelchair, I started Parafencing the same year I acquired my injury,” said Ellen. “So, to me, they followed a similar track. I really

appreciate sport, and the role sport has played in my entire life, to find something new to do and learn immediately after my injury was a great benefit to my overall well being and my mental health. It is always good to have something to focus on and to move forward with.” Ellen competed in her first parafencing event in December 2012, just one year after seeing fencing for the first time, and by the following fall, she was competing in her first Wheelchair World Championships. From there, Ellen set her goals high as she looked towards one day competing in the Paralympics. She fell short of her dream in the 2016 Paralympics, but qualified for and competed in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. “The experience was really like no other, I don’t think I had fully realized I was at the Paralympics until the day of Opening Ceremonies,” Ellen said. “Coming out of the tunnel into

the stadium with all of Team USA is an experience I will never forget. The first day of the competition, I had incredible nerves, but once the actual fencing started, I settled right down and was able to really appreciate the whole experience.” Today, Ellen owns horse farms here in Aiken—Bridlewood Farm and Maplewood Farm—and runs a breeding program with her business partner. Equines have always been at the heart of Ellen’s life, and to be able to remain connected to Aiken’s horse world after her riding days were abruptly cut short is something that she’s grateful for every single day. “I am grateful to all of the people who helped me keep my horses and stay in horses in the period of time directly after my spinal cord injury,” Ellen said. “I feel like in my business with Helen Hill at Bridlewood Equestrian now, that we are very established and I am constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to have had all of that help in the beginning.”

Collette and her daughter Kimberlee, enjoying fresh lemonade and soaking in the spring Aiken weather at the Green Boundary Club.
Cheers to 32 years! For Collette Ball, serving as a State Farm Agent in Aiken, South Carolina is more than just a job, it’s a way to give back to the people in her community every single day. For 32 years, Collette has worked with State Farm and has embraced the company’s mission to help people manage the risks of everyday life, recover from the unexpected, and realize their dreams. Collette’s career with State Farm started in Conway, South Carolina in 1990, where she worked as an Independent Contractor Agent. After 9 years of serving the Conway community, she and her husband moved to the Midwest where she spent 5 years on the State Farm leadership team, working in both Indiana and Minnesota. In 2004, Collette and her husband returned to her home state of South Carolina, officially planting roots in Aiken. Not long after their move, she resumed her role as an Independent Contractor Agent and hasn’t looked back since. Over the past 18 years, she has made her mark serving the community not only during her hours in the office but in her free time as well. Collette has held board positions and leadership roles within many of Aiken’s local groups and organizations including the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce, the Aiken Rotary Club, and at several of the local colleges and universities. She even found a way to merge her passion for the Fighting Irish, her college alma mater, with her homegrown Southern roots by serving as president of the Notre Dame Club of Augusta. Collette is incredibly passionate about her local community and supporting the businesses that make Aiken a great place to live. Her go-to spot for an evening out is the Willcox Hotel, where she loves the inviting atmosphere, design, and great customer service. She is also very active in her parish at St. Mary’s Catholic Church where she serves as lector and co-chairs the Sankora Catholic Ministry. In her free time, Collette unwinds by immersing herself in reading, art, and music. Her favorite creative outlet is playing the piano. Over the years, Collette has grown her State Farm team in order to expand her service offerings and extend a helping hand to even more members of the community. She currently works in a team of 5, which includes her daughter Kimberlee, who serves as a Marketing Specialist in their office on Whiskey Road. Her highly experienced and dedicated team is available to serve the immediate and long-term needs of clients in the Aiken and Central Savannah River Area, as well as the entire state of South Carolina. What ever spring is calling you to do, Aiken has an answer for you. With
an abundance of parks, trails, and gardens we encourage you to explore all of the outdoor beauty that surrounds you. Dive into learning a new sport like polo, golf, or tennis that gets you outside and moving. After a day filled with adventure, stop by one of your favorite local restaurants where you can dine al fresco and soak in the warm sunshine. There is so much to do in Aiken this time of year, let this be your motivation to get outside and take full advantage of it!
Let’s Learn Something New
Horseback Riding Lessons
Polo Lessons
Aiken has long been known for being an exceptional equestrian destination and is steeped in history dating back to the 1800s. With events like Steeplechase, The Aiken Horse Show, and polo matches held throughout the spring, it’s likely inspiring you to give horseback riding a chance if you haven’t already or to pick it back up if you’re out of practice. You’re in luck—there are any number of horseback riding lessons available for all riders, novice to advanced. Once you’ve mastered the skill, you’ll be able to enjoy Aiken in new ways from exploring Hitchcock Woods from horseback or even taking a leisurely ride through downtown Aiken and over to The Willcox for a refreshing cocktail (and treat for your horse, too!)
There’s nothing quite like afternoons spent at the Historic Whitey Field as you catch the Aiken Polo Club, originally established in 1882, competing. Have you ever imagined what it would be like to play polo yourself? If you’re already an accomplished equestrian, go ahead and grab your helmet and your mallet, and get ready to learn the oldest team sport in the world. With lessons offered through The Willcox and local coaches, you’ll find yourself ready for your first chukker in no time.
Golf Lessons
Tennis Lessons Not quite ready for a horseback adventure or 18 holes of golf, but still looking to learn a new sport outside this spring? Take a look at learning to play tennis from a local tennis pro! Whether you’re looking to simply master the basics so you can play with family and friends, or you want to get into competitive league play, there are coaches in town that can help unlock your tennis potential at any level.
It’s hard to miss the excitement that golf brings to Aiken during the spring season when The Masters comes to Augusta National. Our local golf courses and country clubs all get in on the fun too, offering special tee times and events surrounding the historic PGA event. If you’ve never picked up a club for a round, consider trying a new sport! There are numerous courses and professionals in Aiken that offer lessons, and once you discover how much you love spending time out on the green, there are great country clubs where you and your family can become members and take full advantage of all of the amenities, golf and otherwise.
Let’s Get Hitchcock Woods With a storied history as long as the towering pine trees are tall, Hitchcock Woods is the centerpiece of our downtown natural resources. It is the largest privately-owned urban forest in the country, clocking in at 2,100 total acres. Seventy miles of sandy trails wind through the woods and have been used by pedestrians and equestrians alike since the early 1800s. Hitchcock Woods plays host to a series of longstanding traditions ranging from Thanksgiving Day’s Blessing of the Hounds to the Annual Aiken Horse Show, celebrating its 106th anniversary this April. Lace up your running shoes for a long run on the trails or saddle up for a leisurely stroll—no matter how you choose to enjoy the woods, always take a moment to appreciate it’s stunning beauty while you’re there
Aiken State Park Get outside and play at Aiken State Park! Located along the South Edisto River, fishers, canoeists, and kayakers alike will find plenty to enjoy out here as will those that love to camp. During the day, enjoy the 1.7 mile canoe and kayak trail on the South Fork of the Edisto River and in the evening, circle up in one of the 25 available campsites to relax and unwind in nature. In addition, there are three picnic shelters to rent, four park lakes for fishing, and 1,067 total acres for you to explore. If you haven’t been out to Aiken State Park yet, let this spring be the season that you explore one of our best outdoor spots!
Outside! Hopelands Gardens A local favorite since it opened as a public garden over 50 years ago, Hopelands Gardens is a quiet, tranquil place to retreat to just outside of downtown. This 14 acre estate is filled with 100 year old live oaks and pathways that crisscross throughout the gardens, leading every visitor on a new adventure. You’ll find fountains and reflection pools, a touch and scent trail, a labyrinth, a gazebo, wetlands, and even the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum within the garden. Check their events calendar, too! They hold events for all ages ranging from weekday story times for your littles to the Hopelands Concert Series typically held each April, May, and June. Open 10am until sunset each day.
Audubon’s Silver Bluff Sanctuary Just a short 30-minute drive down the road, you’ll find this nature sanctuary along the South Carolina and Georgia state line on the banks of the beautiful Savannah River. Here, you can explore pine forests and bottomland hardwood forests, or you can take a walk along any of their loop trails (0.75 miles, 2 miles, and 3 miles). There’s also 50 acres of lakes and ponds and 100 acres of grasslands with all manner of birds and wildlife.
