A note from Fig
Aiken For some, food is a way of life. From the growing and harvesting of produce to the time spent in the kitchen bringing family recipes to life, meals have always taken on a deeper meaning. They have become a reason to gather socially and are a sacred blend of good food, good company, and good times. Each culinary style is steeped in its own traditions, ingredients, recipes, history, and culture, and often times, in the South, that equates to homecooked comfort food. You can find that right here in Aiken, but you’ll also find so much more as you take time to discover our local culinary scene. Our hometown is a rich melting pot of different backgrounds, and exceptional cuisine of all kinds has made its way into our quaint little town. One thing that I have always loved about Aiken’s food and drink scene is that everyone can find something here that they love. Whether it’s a fancy dinner out on the town, freshly roasted coffee at a local coffee shop, decadent deli-style sandwiches, or locally farmed meat and produce to prepare in

On the same note, lifelong folk musician Roger Bellow is also teaching a weeklong ukulele camp infused with music, art, and language at ACA this summer. Students will receive their own ukuleles, learn how to play through folk music with whimsical melodies in Spanish and English, and even turn their ukulele into a personal work of art. In the fall, Berita Martin will then join Roger to teach students the Spanish language through interactive performances with puppets and original songs. The opportunities for inclusion at our community arts center also extend to exhibiting artists. Their doors open conversations with community members and visitors alike, and this ongoing collaboration with people and organizations brings ideas that Caroline’s team weaves into their mission throughout the year. Having grown up in rural South Carolina and recently moved to Aiken, James Andre is exhibiting in ACA’s main gallery this summer. As a traveling artist, André’s brush speaks the language of movement, with an accent that is full of life. He brings together energy and color to convey his heart and soul, and we get to explore the joie de vivre in his artworks from June 17 to July 23 in this unique summer exhibition, free and open to the public.

like this would ever carry further than my own life, but to my surprise, my work team began to take notice. People would start to ask my wife and I, “can we join you for a walk?” “How can I eat healthier?” Our new mission began: Advanced On The Move, a walking/running club that allowed us to share the benefits of what was happening to Jennibeth and I with the people surrounding us. Suddenly healthier meals started to show up at lunchtime. Substitutions with healthy habits and food began to overtake long addictions and behaviors that were imprisoning the beautiful potential of our team.
Advanced-level care A couple of years ago I woke up to two questions that had been facing me for many years without a real address. Number one, how do I spend more time with my family? Number two, how can I be healthy? Like most Americans, I struggled with the work and family life balance and most often the scales were tipped in favor of work. My health was far from optimal. On the surface I seem to be full of pepper and vinegar but deep down my physical body was nearing the point of initial breakdown. That morning I made a decision not to keep making the same request over and over again that often sounds like “oh help me spend more time with my family” or “oh help me to be healthy.” 18
18 & 20 Tea Olive Court
The request this time was “show me how to do it, show me how to be more healthy and more present with my family and I will do anything asked of me even if it kills me.” Little did I know that the subtle change of words from “help” to “show” would ignite all the cosmos and it’s benevolence to meet me at the point I was at and show me the path to becoming the best version of myself. I used to be the type of person that thought one person surely can’t make a difference but as I started to see changes in my life, the ripple effects began to spread out from the epicenter, first touching my wife’s life and behaviors and igniting the true self inside her and then on to my children. I never thought that making a decision

Fast forward two years, many races, workouts, and 3 1/2 marathons now behind us, our team has embarked on a wellness journey together. Sharing pearls of wisdom on everything from nutrition, to work out templates, to even such spiritual truths such as practicing the power of the present moment (The Now). Our team has lost many pounds collectively, but more importantly, we are all here, we are all present with each other, with our patients, with our referring doctors, and with our community. So yes one pebble tossed in a vast ocean can send out ripples affecting many shores, many miles away. Don’t wait for the future, welcome to the now, welcome to the Advanced Way of Life! — D R . why we love it Versatility! It’s good on anything.
Known as “The Sauce,” its beginnings are as simple and humble as its name. Donald Waters can recall back to his childhood in Beech Island, SC, where his father, Jack, first taught him how to make his famous recipe for BBQ sauce in their home kitchen. Each fall, when it came time for the Waters Family Reunion, Jack would bring out the big pot, mix together all of the ingredients, and set it to simmer on the stove as it filled the house with a delicious aroma. It was then poured into ketchup bottles and a sharpie was used to label it: The Sauce. Bottles of it would disappear at family reunions and friends were happily taking any extra bottles that were available. The demand for The Sauce was higher than the supply! Everyone loved it, and everyone
asked Donald if he would ever sell or market The Sauce. In 2016, Donald decided that it was time. Donald made a big batch of The Sauce, his son created the website, and they started giving away bottles to see what would happen. The response was overwhelming! It has been a family affair since the beginning, with two of Donald’s sons, an uncle, and close friends making up The Sauce Team. Today, the Waters Family tradition lives on—Donald now markets and sells The Sauce throughout our state. With a variety of flavors—Original, Beech Island Gold, Bold, and Mama’s Favorite—you can find a version of The Sauce that will perfectly match with every meal. It truly is an “everything” sauce and you can enjoy it on any type of meat. Pork, chicken, turkey, shrimp… you name it!

Authentic Becky Risher I N 19 5 5 , B E C K Y R I S H E R ’ S FAT H E R C A M E T O A I K E N and shortly after getting settled, he planted his first garden. By the time Becky was born, the garden had grown to five acres and he was growing cantaloupe, watermelon, corn, squash, zucchini, corn, green beans, butter beans, tomatoes, peaches, plums, apples, and more for our local community. “He passed away about three years ago at 90 years old,” Becky said. “My mom wanted to continue on the garden, so we did. We currently have about a one-acre garden and we’re producing all of the same things. She’ll be 91 this year and it’s still her happy place.” Being out in the garden is Becky’s happy place, too. Becky spent her entire life growing up around the garden, watching and learning from her parents as they tended to their plants. Her father’s garden produced more than just excellent fruits and vegetables—it produced a second generation gardener in Becky. “I love digging in the dirt,” said Becky. “I love planting the seed and then seeing it flourish into a plant that yields quality produce. There’s nothing like enjoying a green bean that’s fresh from the fields. I can cook you a pot of garden-fresh green beans and a pot of ones from the can—you tell me which you love more! It’s going to be the garden ones.” It’s still early garden season for Becky right now, but once things get rolling in the summertime, she will be out in the garden picking every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Then on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, she sets up a tent behind Mercy Church on Whiskey Road. She sells what she has when she has it, and if there’s anything leftover, she takes it up to Wood Farms Market for them to sell. “When you buy local, fresh produce, there’s a lot that goes into what you’ve bought,” said Becky. “A lot of time and effort go into the garden—it’s a labor of love. It’s my father’s legacy, and I love continuing it on.”
