Here in the Lehigh Valley, we’re surrounded byart: pop on a mask and take a walk through Bethlehem or any of the towns and cities throughout the Valley, and you’ll see it. Mural projects (a couple of which you can see on this page), pop-up performances, sculptures tucked into unexpected places—art is everywhere. Providing inspiration, color, a respite. Art that expresses unique perspectives, and gives us the chance to experience views different from our own. Art brings us together: literally (with social distancing, of course), figuratively, and virtually. A diverse selection of programming from the beloved IceHouse Tonight performance series has become the new digital Live from IceHouse Tonight, and Main Street moved many of its live music performances online so that we can gather, if only virtually, around local performers. And Touchstone Theatre is presenting the latest programming as part of Festival UnBound: theatre, dance, music, art, and conversation that will take place safely outdoors in the Touchstone parking lot. Art gives voice: it can advocate for the underserved, speak to our individuality. It can share important pieces of our history, as in the new exhibit at Lehigh University Art Galleries and on the SouthSide Greenway. Entitled “Doing Democracy: Photography from the George Stephanopoulos Collection,” the exhibition walks

us through the complex history of American democracy. In challenging times, art is an outlet of expression. Poems, songs, photographs, signs held up in peaceful protest—art proclaims what’s important to us. When we experience art, we get a glimpse of the artists who create it. Texture, pattern, color, and tone conspire to convey a sense of the human behind the work. We honor those who have built their livelihoods around producing and creating art, in all its forms: who have crafted a life around craft. You’ll find some of them in this issue, along with lots of opportunities to bring art into your life. At the heart of the Fig mission is supporting local. Our small businesses are a vital part of our community, and you are vital to their presence in it. We ask you to join us in this mission and support local entrepreneurs. They are our friends and neighbors, navigating an ever-changing landscape so they can continue to serve, educate, and inspire us—which is an art, in and of itself. Whether you’re taking it in or making it yourself, we hope you find some art in your life this fall. KIER A WILHELM & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

Molly Godfrey
Nella Panella
Fresh Face: LEARKE “ WE WO U LD J U S T WA LK AROUND AND MEET UP and have coffee,” says Nella Panella, co-owner, with Molly Godfrey, of the eclectic Easton shop LEARKE, “and talk about what buildings we had crushes on, and how we’re going to get involved in the community; what we could do here. The space became available and we went to see it on a whim. Everything felt right.” LEARKE—a portmanteau of Molly and Nella’s children’s names—may have been born of a lark, but the two have been friends for a decade. They share a mutual connection in Molly’s husband (who grew up down the street from Nella in New Jersey) and an easy friendship of similar taste: in art, in architecture, in unique local goods. “We’re a small business,” says Molly,
“trying to support small makers, with a nice mix of old and new.” The 400-square foot store is a collection of special objects, plants, stationary, home goods, and other treasures that “bring us joy,” says Nella, “and that we feel will bring other people joy.” LEARKE focuses on handmade and ethically-produced items that reflect and sustain the community, whether they be plants picked up directly from the grower, art from Easton-based creatives, or books hand-selected for the neighborhood cycling crowd. It hasn’t been easy, though, launching an in-person experience during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s a small place, where you can come in and say hello and enjoy the visit,” says Molly. (The lockdown led to “an extended soft opening,” Nella jokes.) But it has
also been a time of great kindness. “For being so new, the following we established made a true effort to support us,” says Nella. “It gave us hope to figure out how to get through it.” The store is open again for in-person visits (check their website and social media for the latest hours), and in the future, LEARKE will safely become a community event space, as Molly and Nella originally envisioned. For now, they both feel lucky to be working together, grateful for the support they’ve received and for the new people–makers, shoppers, and community members—they continue to meet. “There are some really beautiful things happening, as far as connections with people,” says Nella. “It is in a different way, but I feel like it’sauthentic.”

Being a Latina in downtown Bethlehem working with men and women from all ethnicities and backgrounds has been a true blessing.” Selines Santiago, Owner
As a child, Juan Carlos watched his mother make an annual trip from their home in Medellin, Colombia to New York City—and couldn’t wait to visit someday himself. He finished his degree in Journalism and Media and decided to travel the world, eventually landing in the United States. A job opportunity in a new restaurant brought Juan Carlos to the Lehigh Valley, and he fell in love with Bethlehem—where he has opened restaurants including Urbano Mexican Kitchen, Tapas on Main, Cachette Bistro & Creperie, Peculiar Wine Bar & Bites, and The Flying Egg. He has always cherished his Latino descent and has incorporated it into multiple restaurant themes.
Creativity. A sense of movement. Listening closely to clients’ needs and empowering them. These are at the core of Selines’ philosophy as a salon owner, cultivated in a lifelong love of the arts and her Puerto Rican heritage. When Selines moved to Bethlehem and the opportunity to be a salon owner arose, the mother of three quickly jumped on it, and has never looked back. “Showing my children that dreams can come true with hard work and a little sparkle…is my passion.”

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others. Left to Right: Marcus Askerneese, Karim Brice Jr, Andres Morales (LV Steel Rockets Founder), Dominick Apgar, Quintin Morton
Giving Back: Andres Morales FOOTBALL HAS BROUGHT so many good people into my life,” says Coach Andres Morales, president and founder of the Lehigh Valley Steel Rockets. “How could I not have a program like this?”
The 2006 Liberty High (and Broughal Middle) School graduate had a stellar football and academic career: he earned a full athletic scholarship to Rutgers University, and continued to play at Bloomsburg, where he got his masters’ in education. After a stint in professional arena football, Andres returned to the Lehigh Valley, to the sport he knows and loves—and to create the kind of communities and opportunities the sport made possible for him and for others. He coached for Freedom, Parkland, and Liberty. And in 2015, Coach Morales founded the Lehigh Valley Steel Rockets. The Lehigh Valley Steel Rockets are part of the club season, which runs in the spring opposite to the traditional fall football season—but participants attend college

football games and take part in workouts and film sessions year-round. The team brings together players from across the Lehigh Valley to practice and travel for tournaments around the country. The club program allows young people to continue to develop—through discipline and respect, as athletes, as leaders and members of a team—and broadens their sense of the possible. In addition to advancing their athletic skills, the club provides SAT and college prep courses. A tournament trip will also feature college visits and tours—to Duke, UNC, Wake Forest—and face time with college athletic programs. “We prime the kids with questions,” says Coach Morales. “Ask about GPAs, SATs. Now, they know the goal. By putting them on campuses, in meeting rooms and facilities worth millions of dollars—there’s no better way to empower them than with a vision.” Since its founding, the club has continued to grow and succeed—in 2019, their 15-and-

under team competed in the invitational NFA National Tournament in Bradenton, Florida—and it's poised to level up its reach. As with any new venture—and especially now, as the economic effects of COVID-19 ripple out—long-term funding is a concern, and the Rockets are actively seeking donors and corporate sponsors. The need for spaces where young people can thrive, connect, and look to the future will never diminish, and neither will the passion that drives Coach Morales. Running the Steel Rockets “provides me and our coaches a sense of purpose,” he says. “To continue to be football junkies, enthralled and engulfed by the sport— we still go to coaching clinics, we’re still learning the game—and now we get to pass it down, to these kids who start to feel like little brothers. Who start to feel like sons. For more information or to support the Steel Rockets program, visit steelrockets.live.

Authentic: Stacie Brennan S TA C I E B R E N N A N , C U R AT O R O F E D U C AT I O N , at the Lehigh University Art Galleries (LUAG), has always been guided by a passion for art. Growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia first piqued her interest in the mural arts, and as an undergraduate at Lehigh, under the mentorship of late LUAG gallery director/curator Ricardo Viera, she discovered the possibilities of combining marketing and business savvy to support art and artists— and the huge social impact community art and galleries can make.
In her previous role as Senior Director for Visual Arts at ArtsQuest/the Banana Factory, and as head of the design committee of the SouthSide Arts District, Stacie has been instrumental in bringing the district’s newest works of public art to life. The bike racks. The mural panels. And the large scale murals: the towering steelworker on Third Street, painted by Dripped on the Road, which includes a
Lehigh graduate. The bright and brilliant mural gracing Cafe the Lodge, commissioned from famous muralist Pau Quintanajornet. Created in partnership with the Cafe, it reflects the organization’s mission to foster a sense of self-worth, calm, and beauty among its residents. That collaboration, the dialogue between artist and community, “becomes its own exciting project,” Stacie says. “People come out to see it, they get to know the artist. It becomes a part of their pride in their city.” Now at LUAG—back where she started as a student—Stacie’s mission is to share the incredible resources available throughout Lehigh’s six galleries and nearly 17,000 works of art, creating opportunities to engage, to learn—and to transform. Take a sociallydistant stroll through Lehigh’s amazing outdoor sculpture collection of over 50 pieces. Explore one of this fall’s new shows,
including “Doing Democracy: Photography from the George Stephanopoulos Collection,” which features major events throughout the 20th Century and the present—online, in the gallery at Zoellner, or on a self-guided tour along the South Side Greenway, where a public exhibition will be mounted. Or take a free workshop offered in conjunction with Lehigh university libraries, connecting writing and art through creative prompts. There’s so much to explore—and so much that can bring us together. “Public art has a way of making people think about things in a different way,” Stacie says. She’s proud of the work ArtsQuest, the Banana Factory, and the South Side Arts District have realized, and is “excited to connect that with LUAG. We have amazing people on campus and in the community alike. When we get everybody together, the possibilities are endless.”

To be an
ARTIST
is to believe in life.”
— H E N RY M OO RE
WH E N WE E XPE RI E N CE A RT, we don’t just see the art itself: we also get to know something about the artists who create it. The pages that follow introduce you directly to both. Take a look at some of the artists and makers who are bringing their art to life, then find a way to bring local art into your life. Find something that speaks to your soul or lights up your room. Redesign your living space. Consider a tattoo or piece of custom jewelry. Catch a local performance virtually, visit a museum, or simply take a walk around to find murals and public art in your midst. Most importantly, support and encourage our creative community to keep enriching and inspiring us.

THE SELECTED WOR KS OF STEPHEN M A LLON
OCTOBER 17th 2020 through MARCH 7th 2021
National Museum of Industrial History CRITIC A LLY ACCL A I M E D PH OTOG R A PH E R Stephen Mallon shares a collection of some of his most captivating, riveting, and thought-provoking pieces in this new exhibit at Bethlehem’s National Museum of Industrial History. Join us as we explore Machines of Interest, and embark upon the journey of an industrial lifecycle and uncover the stories of their existence. From life on the rails to deconstruction in the recycling yard to plummeting into murky depths of the sea, trace the elements of human-made machines as they intersect with the natural world. Featuring over two dozen original prints from the artist’s collection, Stephen’s work will give you a look at industry like never before.
Stephen Mallon’s work has documented everything from the salvaging of Flight 1549, the infamous crash that minted airline captain “Sully” Sullenberger as a national hero, to the recycling industry. With work appearing in The New York Times, NPR, The Atlantic, NBC, and beyond, Mallon’s work has reached and connected with large audiences. The exhibition includes selected pieces from the Stephen’s recent series Passing Freight, a visual celebration of the unique beauty and function of freight train cars in the United States. Mallon’s industrial landscape photographs isolate freight cars within the U.S’s iconic transportation system, which has played a critical role in supply infrastructure across the continent for hundred of years.

Making Time
for You
Everywhere I go, I notice the beauty that surrounds me,” Susan says, “even in what may seem like unconventional places, and it moves me to design.”
S U S A N B E L L A is, literally, making time for you. On a trip to Newport, RI, inspiration hit when she and her husband Dan happened upon an obscure and eclectic antique store, and found about a dozen 18th & 19thcentury clock hands. They brainstormed the entire way home, and Bella Mani ® —a sleek collection whose aesthetic marries a clean, modern sensibility with the romanticism of antiquarian clock hands—was born.

F R O M T H E T E A M AT M O N O C A C Y FA R M P R O J E C T: As summer winds down and nature signals the arrival of fall, we reflect with appreciation on an amazing Growing Season on the farm! This year, we welcomed our new Project Manager Eli Stogsdill and Assistant Farmer Anton Shannon. We hosted our very first plant sale (more to come!), grew our Pick-Your-Own program by 5x last year’s memberships, and were able to offer organically grown produce to Bolete, Pat's Pizza & Bistro, and Roasted. The support from Pick-YourOwn and local restaurants helps bolster our weekly produce donations to local food banks, shelters, and soup kitchens. 2020 has been quite a ride! We’re truly blessed and grateful for the overwhelming support we’ve received as Fig’s Social Mission Partner, and we look forward to discovering what’s in store for the Farm Project, our partners, and our friends!
