A NOTE FROM FIG
Moving forward, together. J U S T D AY S A F T E R the launch of our spring issue, the world as we knew it starkly changed. What started as a surreal and temporary situation quickly escalated into months of uncertainty for the future of our community. With little time to plan, our city began operating in new ways, to keep things running while keeping us safe. As I write this letter—as the Lehigh Valley is slowly emerging from quarantine amidst an ongoing health crisis and an uncertain economic climate—there is a renewed and impassioned urgency calling us to address this country’s long history of racial injustice and take action toward anti-racism. Marches and vigils have gathered this community, and communities all over the world, to unite around this critical cause, masked for safety against the pandemic that continues. Faced with intertwined crises, our local small businesses have found themselves navigating an unpredictable and ever-evolving landscape of challenges. And not only have they navigated it, but many have gone above and beyond—supporting frontline and essential workers, connecting with nonprofits, speaking out, and serving the community in extraordinary ways. And, with an abundance of local love, you have rallied around them. In this issue, you’ll read how, in a climate of constant uncertainty, those businesses are moving forward one day at a time. Please use these pages as a guide to support them. To do so means you’re supporting your neighbors, your friends, and a vital part of our community.
The events of these past few months have acutely reminded us of how precious life is. How precious our neighbors are. And how critical it is to use this time of crisis to act as a force for good. We have witnessed unity, generosity, and collaboration. Neighbors springing into action to give relief to individuals and businesses. Peaceful protests allowing long-silenced voices to be heard. Amongst the turmoil, there is a sense of hope. Before closing this letter, we must express our thanks to essential and frontline workers for their heroic contributions to the community—for their bravery and sacrifice over these past months. Words cannot properly express our gratitude; we are humbly in your debt. Loving local is at the very core of our mission. Thank you, Fig readers, for loving all things local with us—for being generous with your support of small businesses that need us now more than ever, for extending a helping hand to neighbors in need, for getting involved, and for doing your part. You inspire us every day. F R O M S I X F E E T A W AY, KIER A WILHELM & THE FIG INDUSTRIES TEAM

We’re so thankful for our Lit team. Despite necessary layoffs, they volunteered their time to help us out in other ways. We keep each other fed and in good spirits, and we check in on each other. Without them, the shop couldn’t be what it is. And we’re grateful for the Bethlehem community, who has been super supportive throughout this shift in our world, always looking for ways to support our business and making sure we do not fail. Thank you, Bethlehem!”

B O N N P L A C E B R E W I N G C O . is a family affair, literally. Owners Sam and Gina Masotto and their close-knit team brew their evolving list of awardwinning beers right here in Bonn’s friendly taproom, nestled in the SouthSide of Bethlehem. Living by the slogan, “Nice Beers for Nice People,” Gina and Sam will tell you that what’s most special about Bonn Place is the community that built it. So they give back—by supporting their neighbors and providing excellence in product and service to everyone who crosses their threshold. At Bonn, everyone is family.
The last few months of quarantine and pandemic have been nothing short of challenging for a lot businesses...small and large alike. However, there has been something truly special about how people celebrated and rallied around small business during this time. Allowing us to do whatever the law allowed, and responsibly, was a remarkable undertaking. We were able to maintain our responsibilities to our mission of providing a safe place for people to celebrate community. The overwhelming support, during these difficult times and beyond, will always be appreciated.” 310 -14 TAYLOR STREET

Andy Warner (aka “Wardog”), owner
Once he and his wife Kris established Bethlehem’s own Black River Farms, owner Andy Warner had a vision of creating vodka from the grapes grown on their nine acres of sustainably farmed vines. Using their home-grown grapes, which create a neutral, gluten-free spirit in the vodka distillation process, Wardog Spirits was born. Since then, the Wardog team has produced a variety of other spirits using specialty grains, corn, and rye grown at local farms.

Bethlehem W H E N YO U ’ R E A D O W N T O W N M A N A G E R on the brink of a typical spring, you organize community cleanups, order flowers to plant, and plan for a summer full of events to fill your shops and restaurants with guests. But when a quarantine happens and businesses pause—what does a Downtown Manager do then? The answer: everything she can to help her businesses survive. Research loans and grants, hunt down helpful webinars, become a master of CDC guidelines, and create promotions to keep her businesses relevant and top of mind. As I write this letter, we are on the cusp of going into the Green Phase of the quarantine, plans are being made again, and maybe, just maybe—an event or two. But first, let’s get businesses open! I T ’ S B E E N A V E R Y D I F F E R E N T few months in the SouthSide Arts District. Lehigh University students have gone home. Many local employees have been working remotely. Even the Steelstacks have seen eerily quiet days. And events such as Spring on the SouthSide and First Friday have been postponed or moved online. But we’re still breathing. We’re evolving. We’re coming together to keep our businesses going and to support our community to make sure when the fog clears, we are a new and better Bethlehem. Here are just a few merchants of the SouthSide Arts District that have answered the call to help their community, adapt their business, and move into the new normal to not only lend a hand, but to ensure their business is ready for the new world.

They created a custom curbside menu, cocktails to go, and increased production of their custom vodka, gin, whiskey, bourbon, and rum when state liquor stores closed. All while launching a fun, community-driven social media campaign celebrating the #DogsofCurbside that accompanied their owners looking to revive their quarantine life with delicious food and spirits.

Authentic(s): Missy Hartney & Tammy Wendling
Missy Hartney SouthSide Arts District Downtown Manager
THE LOCAL SHOPS AND SERVICES in the heart of Bethlehem may not have been open to the public for regular business during the Governor’s stayat-home order at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. But that heart never stopped beating, aided by the love and support of Tammy Wendling, Downtown Bethlehem Association (DBA) Manager and Missy Hartney, Downtown Manager of the South Side Arts District. Bethlehem’s one heart is made up of two districts. “The Arts District, with the SteelStacks and entertainment and public art, is the funky sibling of the Historic District—which has the history and beauty of the cobblestone walkways, the brick and the [street mosaic] Star. It’s amazing,” says Missy, “to have a town that has these complementary attributes.” And it’s a gift that our town has these two passionate advocates. Both born

and raised in Bethlehem, Tammy and Missy are collaborative champions for the place they call home, and for their unique districts. Tammy, previously with Adams Outdoor Advertising, recently celebrated her first anniversary as manager of the DBA. Tammy started in her role at the height of events season in summer 2019, and hit the ground running. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my job!” she says, whether she’s planning and executing promotional events or acting as a liaison between businesses and other entities. Missy has a similar background in event marketing and fundraising, and serves as “the glue” between the Arts District’s revitalization volunteer committees, providing strategic leadership, promotion, and support. But this spring was no ordinary spring— and what Missy and Tammy have witnessed has been extraordinary. SOUTHSIDEARTSDISTRICT.COM
“Our mission,” says Tammy, “is to work together instead of in isolation. And I have seen our DBA come together more now than I ever have in the entire year I’ve worked. Business owners contact each other now, asking for assistance. They support each other, cross-promote each other...they’re ordering at each others’ restaurants, and for example, picking up wine from Franklin Hill Vineyard, Franklin Hill is offering it to other restaurants to be able to sell... it’s created a unity that is so special and beautiful.” That’s the beauty of small local business: the ability to reach out and care for one another, person to person. Missy was awed by the businesses that “not just stayed open and persevered, but that literally gave of themselves to the community. Who created partnerships with other merchants, and fundraising

opportunities that benefited the businesses, patrons, and people working on the front lines”—whether they were donating meals, like Roasted, or making hand sanitizer, like Social Still, or fabricating masks, like The Fab Lab. And once we got the go-ahead from the Governor’s office, Bethlehem welcomed the community back safely. Maintaining a safe, CDC-compliant comfort level for guests and patrons has been paramount, with touchless ordering, menu boards, and other creative solutions. Merchants reopening needed to adhere to stringent standards for the health and safety of their customers and employees. Parklets and strategic street closures throughout both the Historic and Arts Districts have made space for sociallydistant outdoor dining (who doesn’t
love a meal al fresco on a warm summer night?). Working closely with the City of Bethlehem, Tammy and Missy have helped make the transition both possible and responsible. Bethlehem is now a model community for reopening, and it’s been a team effort: “Without the codes office, health bureau, public works and community development,” says Missy, “the businesses wouldn’t have the parklets, restaurant education or capacity guidance they’ve needed.” “Call your favorite restaurant,” says Tammy. “Get a reservation, so restaurants can manage their number of guests per night. Continue to order curbside pickup.” Even if you cannot go into shops or book services, businesses will have items available for purchase on sidewalks. “That dress you’ve been

eyeing? Now is the time to spend some money. Our businesses need the love and support, and to generate some revenue to make up for lost time.” And it’s going to be “an evolving solution,” says Tammy, so: when you come back to Bethlehem, be patient and be kind. Because shopping local, choosing local, and loving local is now more important than ever. “Shop local every chance you get,” says Missy. “You’re supporting your neighbors. You’re supporting your home, your backyard. These are the people who are making the character of your community. If you want Historic Main Street to retain its beauty and character and the Arts District to stay funky and fresh, you’ve got to support local.” Keep your heart beating, Bethlehem, with patience and with kindness.

Second Harvest is a program of the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley. In addition to food distribution, the food bank operates a number of programs that nourish and strengthen the community, including The Seed Farm, which provides new farmers with valuable, practical experience and skills on a training farm. The Backpack Buddies, SUNShine Box, and MilitaryShare programs provide supplemental nutrition for children, seniors, and active duty and veteran families. The Cooking Matters™ nutrition education program provides children and families with the knowledge and skills needed to eat healthy on a budget. Second Harvest also administers SNAP (food stamp) outreach and application assistance.

C O V I D I M PA C T The Second Harvest network is providing more food assistance than ever before. Throughout the crisis, it has been difficult to find food to buy; supply is low and prices have skyrocketed. Second Harvest changed some things to ensure that food distribution does not stop and food gets out to the people who need it. They packed emergency boxes in their warehouse for the first time and created distribution hubs in the community. “The support of the community has helped us move mountains,” says Katarah.
I don’t believe anyone should go hungry in our world. I believe nutritious meals are a right, not a privilege, and I know what it means to be a child whose mother works 60 hours a week but still needs assistance from time to time. I hope to center the conversation

the Lehigh Valley, The Seed Farm provides new farmers with valuable, practical experience and skills on their training farm in Emmaus, PA, as well as the opportunity to launch sustainable farm businesses in their innovative farm incubator. They’re growing new farmers and growing the local food economy in the Lehigh Valley.
Initially developed by Lehigh County and Penn State Cooperative Extension, The Seed Farm was formed in order to help support the County's farmland preservation program by cultivating the next generation of farmers to take over the region’s preserved farmland. Since 2010, The Seed Farm has provided training in production, marketing, business planning, and equipment operation to beginning farmers who are looking to start farms. To date, 33 beginning farmers have received intensive, full-season training in higher-level farm ownership skills, and ten farm businesses have been launched in the farm incubator. Experiential and educational activities have enabled The Seed Farm to deliver valuable skills in sustainable agriculture practices to hundreds of farmers, gardeners, and community members. In addition to their programming, The Seed Farm’s annual Farm-to-Fork Fundraiser and Spring Plant Sale are much-anticipated events that bring together foodies, farmers, and gardeners in support of a shared goal: ensuring the future of agriculture.
PROGRAMS The Farm Incubator provides new farm entrepreneurs with affordable access to land, infrastructure, equipment, and mentoring, in order to lower the barriers to farm entry. New Farmer Training provides practical, hands-on experience on The Seed Farm's working and educational farm, preparing a new generation of farmers for farm ownership. The CSA Workshare program provides community members with an introduction to agriculture, working directly with an experienced farmer. The produce that is harvested is sold through an exclusive Community Supported Agriculture partnership with St. Luke’s Hospital.
