Y E A R ’ S E N D is a natural time for reflection. It’s a season in which we often find ourselves looking back, reliving memories both joyful and wistful. This time of year also gives us much to look forward to: there’s something exciting about turning the last page on the calendar and anticipating the fresh opportunities a new year brings. And with festive events popping up all over town, there are lots of wonderful chances to connect, share, and give. In this issue, we want to invite you to do all of these things. Connect. Share. Give.
First, we’ve put together a special section featuring some of the inspiring local nonprofit organizations working tirelessly to make a positive difference in Bethlehem and beyond. All nonprofits seek to solve a problem, to serve a need—providing for and enriching our community and the people in it—and they can’t do it alone. We invite you to read about their good work, then consider supporting one or more of them through donations, volunteering, or both. See our annual Giving Guide on page 46 for more information about ways you can make a difference. Second, explore our curated Gifting Guide and make the commitment to do your shopping, well…in shops this year. In the guide, you’ll find a beautiful selection of unique gifts, hand-selected
by local merchants, and you’ll even see photos of some of the merchants themselves— the people putting thought and heart into their business, whom you can meet and get to

know, and who value your support. And, money spent in our community stays in our community. You have the opportunity to have a big impact with this small choice. The holidays are a time to reflect, to look forward, and to show our appreciation to the ones we love. There’s so much that Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley give to us—and so many opportunities to give back. We hope this season fills you with great gratitude for both. Laura and her husband opened their new franchise at 9 East 3rd Street on Bethlehem’s SouthSide in August of 2019. With over 300 CBD American Shaman locations throughout the country, theirs is the only one in the Lehigh Valley.
CBD hemp oil should not be confused with marijuana; it won't cause a “high”. Rather, CBD, or “cannabidiol,” is the compound of the cannabis plant believed to enhance your body’s ability to maintain balance and manage physical and emotional stress, as well as other therapeutic applications.

They give free samples to everyone who comes into the store, and encourage people to come back multiple times. “We're really focused on providing information to people who come to our store,” Laura says, “so that they know exactly what they’re getting and how CBD works.”

Fresh Face: The Rustic Wood Project W H E N K A R A M E A S E , Nickie-Jo Breiner, and Lisa Davis first met and bonded at a game for their boys’ football team, they never thought they’d become a team themselves. But that’s exactly what happened when they created The Rustic Wood Project, a do-it-yourself workshop that offers step-by-step instruction where you can create personalized rustic home decor. In the near future, customers will be able to create oversized outdoor games and dabble in wood burning. After becoming fast friends, the trio ended up attending a party together that combined woodworking and wine. They enjoyed the experience so much that they decided they’d like to think
about doing it themselves. “We had a lot of fun,” Nickie-Jo says. “and we all woke up the next morning and realized we still wanted to do it.” And the plan for The Rustic Wood Project was born. Parties at The Rustic Wood Project’s workshop occur on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and you need to register online one week before your event—though the team will make every effort to offer time slots during the week. In addition to private parties, they also offer open workshops. Dates and times can be found on their website and Facebook page. The team also does fundraising and community-based events on a regular basis, such as Liberty High School Theater, 259 EAST ELIZ ABETH AVENUE
Our Lady of Perpetual Help, as well as tricky trays and bingos. The Rustic Wood Project would be glad to work alongside you and a foundation of your choice. You’re invited to bring your own food, drink, and music to The Rustic Wood Project—and you can also bring your own wood-working ideas. “Here, you can literally come with any idea, and we’ll make it happen for you,” Kara says. “We enjoy creating and designing custom pieces that complement our customer's style.” Ultimately, the goal is customer satisfaction. “We do a lot of communicating with guests that are coming in,” Lisa says. “We want you to love it!”

Fresh Face: NuHouse M A N Y S AY T H AT the most powerful healer of the human body is the human body itself. That’s why Easton native Janel Lukachek—along with her mother, Adele Lukachek and her partner Tonie Chicchi— created what they call their passion project, NuHouse: a health and wellness spa on South Bank Street in downtown Easton that is a place for body, mind, and soul-connected healing and repair. “It’s truly a family-run facility,” Janel says. “Without any one person here, we would not stand—every person has their role. No one is CEO, for example, because it truly takes a village. We have an array of practitioners working together on every

system of the body to help you be and feel the best you.” From cold laser therapy to chiropractic, yoga, reiki, massage, and a warm sauna—as well as having an aesthetician, a nutritionist, and an herbalist on staff—there’s something for everyone. After living in New York City for over a decade, Janel came to the revelation that there are so many people trying to heal themselves, and many different avenues to pursue instead of traditional medicine. So she decided to bring together a group of like-minded people under one roof. The team says that the name NuHouse has two meanings: not only is your body

your house, but they want everyone to feel at home at the spa. You’ll have your own robe and slippers in this no-Wi-Fi zone, so you can reboot yourself while you recharge your phone. Surrounded by the exposed brick, hardwood floors, natural light, and calming aromatherapy scents at NuHouse, it’s easy to get into the mindspace necessary to do so. In the bustle of modern life, it's nice to know there are places to help us find calm, and to center ourselves. The team at NuHouse is committed to helping guests do just that. “We lead you to your own house and hold the space for you to heal,” Janel says.

Authentic: Kashi Johnson A U T H E N T I C I T Y H A S A LWAY S been the cardinal rule of Hip-Hop. The mantra of “keeping it real” was an expression of both street solidarity and being true to oneself. For Kashi Johnson, Chairperson and Professor of the Department of Theatre at Lehigh University, it’s also a way to introduce students to the world of the performing arts—and to help students find their authentic voices. A Lehigh University alumna who has now been a professor there for twenty years, Kashi does this through her course titled “Act Like You Know: Hip Hop Theatre”. Students in the course don’t just read articles and discuss Hip-Hop, they actually do it. They learn acting techniques and rehearse performance projects rooted in the foundational pillars of Hip-Hop culture: MCing, DJing, graffiti writing, and breakdancing. The class culminates in a final show open to Lehigh and the surrounding community. “I grew up in New York City in the early 1980s when hip hop culture was being born,” Kashi says, “so I get my love for the culture honestly.” One of the early assignments in the class is for students to come up with their own Hip Hop alias. In Hip Hop culture, nicknames are sometimes assumed, sometimes given by others. Kashi’s alias is the alliterative, double entendre of “Queen Kash.” “I did not call myself Queen Kash!” Kashi says, with a laugh. “All of my students started doing it, and it’s very lyrical. But that's Hip Hop, that's respect, so I accept that crown.” But the “Act Like You Know” course isn’t about the Queen Kash experience. It's about a bridge of connection between student and educator, built to help students find and unapologetically speak their truth. “It works because everybody brings their true self to whatever it is that they do,” Kashi says. “My job as the teacher is just to make sure it stays authentic.” To learn more about Kashi, visit KashiJohnson.com.

There aren’t many restaurants that have a female owner, female executive chef, and a mostly female-dominated service staff. “It’s pretty amazing that we have all of these strong, passionate women that work so well together,”
Rachel says, “and are determined to continue to make the Apollo Grill successful for many years to come.” She knows she has something special here. “Not one person makes the Apollo Grill; we ALL make the Apollo Grill. Fresh Face: Green Vida Co. WHEN JACKIE AND WILSON RUEDA’S son Santi was diagnosed with autism at age two, the hours of therapy he had to undergo didn’t seem to be helping. When Santi turned 4, Jackie decided to start a preservative-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free diet that she had read about. Santi said his very first word two weeks after starting the diet.
Changing his diet greatly improved his health and development. He's now 10 and continues to be on a gluten-free and dairy-free diet. “It was life-changing for us. Then I started getting into juicing and making smoothies myself. I said, ‘I want to have a smoothie and juice bar one day,’ and I put it on my five-year bucket list plan.” Two years ago, Jackie and her husband had the opportunity to start a smoothie and sandwich shop in her father’s convenience store in Bangor. This fall, they opened their first standalone store in Forks Township, with a smaller sister store opening soon in NuHouse, a wellness center located in downtown Easton. Green Vida's mission statement is “Real food made with love and transparency,” and they deliver in spades. The team serves fresh, whole, organic, non-GMO, local, and minimally processed foods whenever possible. “The transparency part is important, because we want people to know what they're eating and where it comes from,” Jackie says. And their healthful menu doesn’t stop at smoothies and cold-pressed juices. They are proud to serve Devoción coffee (devocionusa.com), sourced from small farms in Colombia, dry milled, roasted, and arriving within days. (“The freshness and taste is incomparable,” says Jackie.) You'll also find the popular “bulletproof” coffee—with its addition of grass-fed butter and MCT oil—organic salads with house-made dressings, quinoa bowls, sandwiches, wraps, gluten-free and vegan friendly and more, all of which delight the eye as much as the palate. “That's why we have an open-kitchen concept,” says Jackie. “We want customers to see their food prepared fresh and in a clean environment as they order it.”

IN THE LAST issue of Fig Bethlehem, we introduced you to the Downtown Allentown Market, a 12,ooo-squarefoot food and drink hall with nine local, regional, and national merchants offering creative, fast-casual concepts. Now, City Center Investment Corp.—the real estate development company behind five office towers, the Renaissance Allentown Hotel, seven residential communities, and many
unique restaurants and shops—has introduced two exciting new vendors, opening this fall! First, a long-awaited neighborhood grocery store: the ever-colorful Radish Republic, located across the ArtsWalk from the Downtown Allentown Market. This new store offers everyday essentials like produce, meat, dairy products, frozen foods, and by-the-pound bulk items, such
as flour, grains, and beans—and also sells drinks, soups, and grab-and-go options like salads, sandwiches, and fruit—in a friendly atmosphere where you can get to know your grocer. And at 732 West Hamilton Street, we welcome Hop Daddy’s Brewing Co. (in the former Roar Social House location). Hop Daddy’s features a stunning 2,500-squarefoot outdoor beer garden complete with games and live entertainment, and a food menu with artisan pizzas and other tasty shareables as focal points. In addition to serving its own beer, Hop Daddy’s offers revolving guest taps from other local breweries. To top it off, the Allentown Parking Authority has announced a Free Parking program for the streets, lots, and decks around the PPL Center on weekdays from 5pm to midnight, and on weekends from 8am until midnight, except during events. Downtown Allentown is making it easier than ever for you to experience this regional center of excellence for business, culture, and metropolitan living!

What if you could help bring your
community together and support Bethlehem’s economic development through the arts?
ArtsQuest and its diverse programs are an important element in the vitality of Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley. Take their flagship, Musikfest, for example. It’s hard to believe, but 36+ years after the very first Musikfest, there are now three generations of ‘fest-goers’ celebrating and interacting with the arts together every August. And programs take place year-round at SteelStacks and all over Bethlehem. Your support helps ensure ArtsQuest’s high quality arts, education, and cultural programs continue—including free programming and scholarships to those who lack access.

GIVING BACK Making a difference in the lives of others.
John Marquette, President, The Archie Project
Giving Back: The Archie Project IN THE FIRST decade of the 20th century, Archibald Johnston, a graduate of Lehigh University, moved up the ranks of the Bethlehem Steel Company to eventually become its vice president in charge of foreign sales. While there, Johnston led the consolidation campaign to create the modern city of Bethlehem, and became its first mayor. He served one term and then moved to his new country estate, “Camel’s Hump Farm” in Bethlehem Township. The mansion that Johnston had built on the farm in 1923—a 6,000-squarefoot, two-story structure—still stands on what is now the 55-acre Janet and William D. Housenick Memorial Park.
54
(The park itself is named after Janet Johnston Housenick, the granddaughter of Archibald Johnston and its donor.) The mansion had long been in a state of disrepair, so in May 2018, Bethlehem Township Commissioners and the Housenick Foundation Trustees agreed to renovate the mansion’s exterior on the condition that a private organization would raise funds for the interior. That’s where retired librarian and author, John Marquette, who has enjoyed the park and the mansion since 2013, comes in. John is the president of The Archie Project, a 501(c)(3) organization formed in early 2019 to raise funds to restore the interior of the historic Archibald

Johnston Mansion. “One of the great things about our work and restoring the mansion,” John says, “is that it is at the center of a park that provides something different in every one of the 12 months of the year. When you come out here in December, you will have just as great a visit as you would in the middle of July. ” The exterior renovation of the mansion was completed in the spring of 2019, so now John’s Archie Project is free to pursue its ambitious goals for the interior. “It needs to be a building that supports the mission, goals, and objectives of Bethlehem Township. And I believe it also has the potential to be a great educational resource—environmental

sciences, the arts, theatre, music. We’d like to find ourselves an educational institution to partner with,” John says. But big projects need big money, so The Archie Project is about to launch a capital campaign and pursue grant opportunities from foundations and corporations with a presence in the Township and in Pennsylvania, as well as seek casino and hotel tax
revenue distributions to complete the work on the mansion’s interior. Most importantly, the ultimate goal of The Archie Project is to ensure that the mansion and surrounding property is universally accessible to the people of the Lehigh Valley, so that people with any kind of mobility need can use as much of the property as possible.
“I’d like to think that we have this gem for everyone in the Lehigh Valley or farther,” John says, “but really it’s all about what we can do for the residents of Bethlehem Township, so they have a place where they can come and say, ‘This is our park. This our place.’” To learn more about The Archie Project, visit archieproject.org.
