THE

CREATIVE CITY

you do not have to look far to find the arts in Bethlehem. While

the Steel Stacks stand tall as a beautiful sculptural backdrop towering over the city, it’s what is happening around them that has grabbed our attention. From paintings to performing arts, music to marionettes, Bethlehem has established itself as a thriving arts community. Bethlehem has a multitude of organizations that are dedicated to keeping the arts alive and available to all. ArtsQuest at SteelStacks brings us year-round concerts to be enjoyed on the lawn under the stars, paired alongside a cafe dinner, or during the ten-day celebration we call Musikfest. Godfrey Daniels and Touchstone Theatre produce unique musical performances and original plays respectively. The Zoellner Arts Center offers acts for all ages, including student performances on Lehigh University’s campus. The list goes on and so does the show! If you are a music buff, an art aficionado, enjoy dance or theater, Bethlehem is the place to be. The community cultivates the arts and creative culture daily and celebrates all year long. In this issue, we’ve collected the best of the arts in Bethlehem. Read on and make plans to get to know creative Bethlehem.

Brian Tallarico

Mmm. Chocolate. Catch Brian Tallarico in his store on East 3rd Street, and you’ll be hard pressed to leave without a selection of yummy treats. But how did this chocolatier/jeweler/ metalsmith/artist/musician and all around creative entrepreneur end up knee deep in sweetness? Skip back many moons. Brian grew up with adventure and imagination ever present, around the river and forest encircling a steel town in Western Pennsylvania. As a kid, he helped a family friend in the chocolate business, and later went on to earn a fine arts degree from Penn State. He pursued metalsmithing and jewelry for several years, including having sculptures at The British Museum, and in the permanent

4 figbethlehem.com

collection at the Smithsonian. Marriage and family brought Brian back to work temporarily for the chocolatier, which turned into 12 years, relocating to Bethlehem and eventually opening his own chocolates business, which is about to celebrate its ten-year anniversary. But there’s more to Brian than meets the eye or the palate. When he was 14, his parents brought the family to live in Italy for a year, where Brian first learned how to play guitar on a hillside in Tuscany. He recalls how instrumental (no pun intended) that time was in cheering on the creative spark. Skipping ahead many years, Brian taught himself how to make Cigar box guitars,

from wooden cigar boxes, guitar necks, and various assorted found objects, from license plates to paint can tops, which he now sells at the store and at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. “One of the things I’ve always believed in is that artists need instant gratification,” says Brian, “and I can get that whether I’m building guitars or making chocolates.” Guitars, chocolate, and creativity. Enticing, in the sweetest and most melodious way. Stop by and say hi to Brian at Tallarico’s Chocolates, located at 26 East Third Street.

DESIGNING SPACES that SPARKLE & SHINE DAVID HAUSMAN TURNS DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH INTO SPACES OF BRILLIANCE & STYLE 6 450 main street 610.217.7208 davidhausmandesigns.com

Main Street is welcoming another jewel. JewelWerks is now open for business, and with the tagline “ADORN. CREATE. ILLUMINATE.” this fresh gem of a jewelry store is like no other. Director of Sales and Marketing Kate Mancini explains, “We’re passionate about helping people find their style,” she says. “The word ‘ADORN’ helps to bring that out in them by embellishing their look with beautiful jewelry.” “CREATE” represents more than the jewelry itself. With a gorgeous interior space designed by David Hausman Designs, JewelWerks is a WOW, from the carpets to the chandeliers, enhancing the jewelry in the best light. “David’s design is beautiful,” says Kate. “JewelWerks is modern, new, and exciting, and David’s input was invaluable as always.” There’s an onsite custom design studio, featuring jewelry designer Kris Franzese, who creates personal statement pieces for customers. There’s also a bridal salon, providing the most gorgeous diamonds that marry the perfect stone with the perfect setting, tailored to each couple’s desire, whether it’s color, clarity, or carats. Kate notes, “Their love is one of a kind so their ring should be one of a kind as well.” And then there’s “ILLUMINATE”, referring to the jewelry allowing the wearer’s individuality to shine through. The array of designers at JewelWerks offers many choices, inspiring shoppers to find special pieces that make a statement illuminating just who they are.

JewelWerks curates a versatile collection of chic and covetable jewelry that demonstrates an appreciation for fine craftsmanship, modern spirit, and individual style. With an eye for details, they seek out pieces with that something extra—whether it is manifested in color, texture, silhouette, or symbolism—that takes each piece beyond the ordinary.

“ We help people express themselves through their jewelry. We help people tell their story.”

Owner Gary Werkheiser has watched all the great changes in Bethlehem and is excited to bring the love of jewelry to the heart of Main Street and the hearts of customers who are looking for truly unique adornments. Kate ties the store’s philosophy up with a bow, saying, “We help people express themselves through their jewelry. We help people tell their story.”

CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY

now open! “We believe that art belongs in the home,” says Director and Curator Ward Van Haute. This fall, explore the Bethlehem House Contemporary Art Gallery to find an original work of art to inspire your living space.

Meet new local businesses that add to the texture of our thriving downtown. Look for our Fig® Fresh Faces in every issue.

fresh face: bethlehem house contemporary art gallery There’s a beautiful new gallery on Main Street. Filled with color, design, and art from all over the Lehigh Valley, the Bethlehem House Contemporary Art Gallery is the state of art in Downtown Bethlehem. Director and Curator Ward Van Haute’s theater and film background brings a unique perspective to the gallery atmosphere. His experience working on set decoration and in art departments for 15 years throughout New York and Philadelphia offers a creative approach to exhibiting art in a gallery setting. “We believe that art belongs in the home,” says Ward. “So our goal is to demonstrate the practical use of contemporary art in modern interior design. Each room represents a different setting, from a living room and bedroom, to a dining room, den, and even a home recording studio.” The interior design of the gallery is meant to enhance the art, with each room rich in color and depth. Specializing in both emerging and established artists, there is a large assortment of

original art for a variety of budgets, embracing the gallery’s philosophy that anyone can be a fine art collector. Extensive renovating was done in the 2500-squarefoot space, especially with the lighting, thanks to renowned lighting designer Jerold R. Forsyth. The space transforms to create various moods and emotions, augmenting the art viewing experience. Lights can be shifted every square inch to showcase that each work of art is different and deserves its own specialized lighting. Shows will change four times a year, accompanied by art openings. Matching beautiful art with beautiful homes is what the gallery proprietors do, and they welcome passersby, interested art appreciators, and interior designers to come in, peruse the space, take in the art, and maybe even bring some home.

the arts are alive and well in bethlehem. With eclectic names

and creative missions, places like The Zoellner Arts Center at Lehigh University, Touchstone Theatre, Godfrey Daniels, ArtsQuest, The Southside Film Festival, The Banana Factory, The IceHouse, and Mock Turtle Marionette Theatre (to name more than a few) are prime examples. Visual art, music, theater, dance, and film happen daily, not to mention the many arts festivals, music and film festivals, First Fridays, and, of course, the historic sites and artisans right at the downtown doorstep or nearby. There are resident artists at The Banana Factory with classes from jewelry to glass blowing, and photography to ceramics, theatrical performances at Touchstone Theatre and the IceHouse, and marionettes creating puppetry magic at Mock Turtle. Check out music legend Smokey Robinson or international favorites The Gipsy Kings heading to the Zoellner, or how about a trip down memory lane with Dave Davies of The Kinks at ArtsQuest, or Gladys Knight at the Sands Event Center. As if that weren’t enough, there’s a pearl of a music venue right in the heart of the South Side that is ready and waiting for new visitors to discover. Legendary folk club Godfrey Daniels is on the verge of celebrating their 40-year anniversary, and this iconic venue has had hundreds of music notables grace its stage over the years, including Shawn Colvin, Jesse Winchester, Bela Fleck, Shemekia Copeland, John Gorka, and bass player Bakithi Kumalo from Paul Simon’s Graceland album. There are more free events all over the city than any one person could possibly attend, from outdoor concerts, to art openings, to festivals, to programs for youth at several of the aforementioned venues. So take it all in, plan ahead or be spontaneous, and enjoy the arts in the beautiful City of Bethlehem.

John Saraceno

There’s hardly enough room on this page to describe all that John Saraceno has done for the South Side of Bethlehem. From opening his graphic design business there in the 1980s, he saw a vision of what the South Side could be. A month later, John helped spearhead the South Side Merchants Association and he hasn’t looked back since. He’s a fundraising, community organizing, trailblazing non-stop go-getter of a man. As a founder, pioneer, steward, advocate, organizer, volunteer, director, connector and board member for countless organizations in Bethlehem—from the Southside Film Festival to the Rose Garden Children’s Festival to First

22 figbethlehem.com

Friday to Touchstone Theatre where he served on the board for over 20 years, and through his ad agency, Saraceno Design—he has worked with over 150 non-profits. For John, it’s about seeing the big picture. He always knew that if the South Side got turned around, it would help turn around the whole city, especially after the close of Bethlehem Steel. John has been the voice of the South Side for decades. He supports the neighborhood and they support him. As Godfrey Daniels managing director Ramona LaBarre says, “John is a champion for the South Side and a touchstone in our neighborhood.

He is a great communicator and connector who gets folks together for progress.” This former turbine mechanic, welder, and rigger turned business owner says, “I like the neighborhood. We stood our ground when it mattered, and it always mattered. I feel like I need to make a difference. It’s my part of the social contract.” John is not done and knows that there is more to do ahead. If you want to help the vision— get involved, shop the South Side, and by all means, when you see John, wave hello.

“The hands of the engineers created the buildings, bridges, and ships. The creativity had to come from someone’s mind and hand. It all starts with the artist.” sam bocchicchio, Sands Design Consultant

THE ART OF STEEL ON THE WALLS OF SANDS When you walk around the campus of Sands Bethlehem, the thought of seeing art might not be front of mind. But when you look deeper, it’s there, and it’s spectacular. A record of history that could easily be shown in a museum, the halls of the resort are like walking back in time, right through the pens and pencils of the engineers who built Bethlehem Steel.

Design Consultant Sam Bocchicchio has been at Sands Bethlehem from the beginning, helping to design the buildings and bring in the past with three distinct art techniques that represent it best. The first is renowned artist Dean Cornwell, whose iconic work was known throughout industry, from Bethlehem Steel and General Motors to The Pennsylvania Railroad and Rockefeller Center. The main piece is the artist’s representation of the whole steel plant. Formerly in the corporate offices of Bethlehem Steel, it now resides in the lobby of the Sands hotel. It’s over 30 feet in length, was constructed in eight panels, in oil paint on Bakelite, and is a sight to behold.

Alyssha Csuk, 201X

There was a joint cooperative effort to uncover art from Bethlehem Steel after it closed and to bridge the gap between “The Steel” and Sands. However, reclaiming the work was no easy feat. There were murals on canvas glued directly to the

26 77 sands boulevard reservations: 877.726.3777 pasands.com

wall, which had to be removed very delicately, and painstakingly preserved and remounted. Next came the old mylar engineering drawings of the furnaces and equipment. Sam realized how strikingly beautiful and aweinspiring they were in their illustration and sheer complexity; hand-drawn documentations of the steel plant that built much of this country, from the Golden Gate Bridge to New York skyscrapers to over 1,000 ships during World War II. He started the process of choosing which drawings would be exhibited; no easy feat either, with over 300,000 drawings on microfiche. The original drawings were uncovered not in standard flat files, but rolled up in tubes. They were carefully taken out, sandwiched between glass and framed for display. Sam shares a great story that speaks to the accuracy of the engineer’s drawings, done by hand long before the assistance of computers. “The Golden Gate Bridge was built here, shipped through the Panama Canal, and not one field change was needed with the rivet alignment,” he says. “The drawings were the genesis of the building. The hands of the engineers created the buildings, bridges, and ships. The creativity had to come from someone’s mind and hand. It all starts with the artist. They had to see it three dimensionally. These people were amazing. There’s an art to that, and they did it perfectly.”

Dean Cornwell, Installation (1951)

Bringing a completely different perspective to all things steel is Bethlehem photographer Alyssha Csuk, who was brought in to document all the building and demo work for Sands. This turned into a more artistic interpretation and her desire to share the “hidden ephemeral beauty of the industrial ruins. Her work is filled with color and texture, and is a breathtakingly surreal vision to the past. Senior Project Manager Pete Schneck has worked closely with the art as well and feels very connected to the bridge between the past and the present. Steel goes way back in the family. His father was a general foreman on the blast furnaces for 20 years, and his grandfather was an engineer and a wire rope salesman, even selling the wire for the Golden Gate Bridge project. Pete’s dad was thrilled that the property was being saved and even more excited that Sands Bethlehem was interested in preserving the history. We are too.
