A NOTE FROM FIG
Ushering in fall. Is there anything better than autumn in Columbia? Think about it: there’s so many incredible things going on in town once summer vacations end, the hot temperatures fade away, and our social calendars pick up once again. How about when you kickoff the change of season with the Mighty Sound of the Southeast playing 2001 in Williams-Brice Stadium as our South Carolina Gamecocks take the field, enveloped by a stadium filled with a sea of garnet and black? Or when you welcome our University’s rival Clemson to town on Thanksgiving weekend for a day filled with tailgating and football? Or how about strolling down Main Street on a Saturday morning enjoying the cooler breeze and all of the delicious smells and tastes of the food trucks and vendors at Soda City while shopping all of the beautiful, colorful handmade wares? When October rolls around, we are so excited to have Van Gogh and His Inspirations coming to the Columbia Museum of Art! This collection includes 12 of his paintings alongside art from the artists who inspired him in his lifetime. And then, on October 9, the South Carolina State Fair comes to town and we get to celebrate 150 years with gooey caramel apples and endless entertainment.
This year, there’s even some exciting new additions that you and your family will love— check out the spread on page 28 to learn more. And then November comes, turning Columbia into a twinkling wonderland with events like Vista Lights, A Starry Night, Devine Night Out, and of course, Lights at the Zoo! As you flip through this issue, we’re delighted to bring some of Columbia’s best Arts & Culture to you for you to support. Shop with your favorite local boutiques and shops this fall as you search for the perfect new artwork to hang up in your home, a handmade gift to send to a friend, or an outfit to wear out on the town during this busy fall season. Vincent van Gogh Self-Portrait, 1887
Beyond a Starry Night EXPERIENCE THE ORIGINAL, CMA-EXCLUSIVE VAN GOGH AND HIS INSPIRATIONS EXHIBITION THIS OCTOBER “No artist emerges out of a vacuum, including Van Gogh,” said Columbia Museum of Art Chief Curator Will South. “All of us are shaped by our culture, our time, our experiences. The works by Van Gogh being loaned for this exhibition reveal his connections to the artists and culture he was part of: Flower Beds in Holland from the National Gallery of Art, for example, shows how he looked hard at the work of other landscapists like CharlesFrancois Daubigny in addition to that of the Impressionists. His famous Self-Portrait from the Wadsworth Atheneum shows how Van Gogh’s ability to translate psychological intensity stretches back to predecessors such as Rembrandt. This exhibition explores, in short, how Van Gogh became Van Gogh.” Featuring works by Van Gogh along with a diverse group of handpicked paintings and drawings that inspired both Van Gogh’s vision and his artwork, this collection has some 60 works. It is comprised of a private collection built by art historians and South Carolina residents Steven Naifeh and his late partner Greg Smith and includes works of art on loan from 12 museums across the country. Experience and learn about one of the most famous and influential artists in the history of Western art with the CMA this fall. They offer a variety of tours, lectures, and activities to allow you the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in this collection.

Harriett said. “As a registrar at the museum, I worked directly with the art collection and I was excited about the idea of having that continuity at the Arts Commission with the State Art Collection.”
Authentic: Harriett Green The South Carolina Arts Commission has three goals: to support artist development, to establish the arts as an integral part of South Carolina’s education system, and to encourage arts development in communities around the state. Working at the Arts Commission as they take steps to accomplish these goals is Harriett Green. “The work at the Arts Commission is really interesting and involved,” Harriett said . “It feels good when you can make a difference in an artist’s life. Just talking with artists, working with them, and seeing that lightbulb go off makes it all worthwhile.” Harriett, as the Director of Visual Arts at the South Carolina Arts Commission,

She also serves as a County Coordinator in Anderson, Lancaster, Lee, Kershaw, Oconee, Pickens, Sumter, and York counties where she consults with art leaders and others on a variety of topics including planning, exhibitions, public art, grant advisement, and more. In addition, Harriett serves as the State Art Collection Curator, which was one of the things that attracted her to the Assistant Visual Arts Director position at the Arts Commission thirty years ago. “I was the registrar and later the assistant curator at the Columbia Museum of Art from 1980 to 1989,”

Since 1989, when Harriett began working at the Arts Commission, the local art scene around Columbia has gone through expansive change. “There was once a time when you knew exactly what was happening in Columbia and the artist or the organization behind it. Today, things are different. There are many artists and organizations working together in a crowded field with a lot going on.” “The art scene in Columbia is energized,” Harriet said. “It’s constantly changing and it’s hard to keep up with. Now we have many choices which is good, because it means that there’s a lot going on all the time. It all points to a growing city, and I’m excited to see the interest spreading outside of city center. We now have 701 Center for Contemporary Art in the Mill District. Then there is Stormwater Studios, One Eared Cow Glass, and Lewis+Clark on Huger Street. Across the street is the Columbia Music Festival Association on Pulaski Street. In the North Main Street area we now have Indie Grits Labs. That’s what is really exciting about Columbia’s art scene—it shows growth for our city.”

Prize-winning memories THE SOUTH CAROLINA S TAT E FA I R C E L E B R AT E S 15 0 Y E A R S TH I S O C TO B E R
We know: it’s the day that your parents picked you up early from school and drove you downtown to spend the day riding all of the rides that you were tall enough for, eating delicious fried food, and walking through the art exhibit to find your artwork on display. Possibly it’s the Friday night that you spent conquering your fear of heights with your friends as you rode across the fair grounds on the chair lift or took in the view of downtown Columbia from the top of the Ferris wheel. Perhaps it’s even the memory of hearing your name called over the PA system with a request to meet your party at “the rocket.” Could it be the day that you experienced it all for the first time again through the eyes of your child?
If you’ve lived in Columbia during the fall at any point over the last century and a half, we can guarantee that you have a nostalgic moment or two that involves the South Carolina State Fair. The Fair has been creating lasting memories for fairgoers since 1869, and they’re celebrating in a big way this year for the 150th Anniversary this October 9th through October 20th. Did you know? One hundred and fifty years ago, when the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina was formed with the purpose of sponsoring a state fair, the fair was located on Elmwood Avenue. It outgrew its original location just after the turn of the 20th century and was relocated across town to Rosewood Drive. The society was able to expand the activities and amenities in the newer, larger location to set the groundwork for new attractions, large exhibits, and bigger crowds. For nearly half a century, the State Fair was home to “Big Thursday”—the annual football contest between the
Gamecocks and the Tigers. But before the rivalry even reached its heyday, the most popular day of Fair Week was Thursday, when the State Ball was held each year. Portions of the fair were even once held in other areas around downtown Columbia. Until the early 1900s, many of the rides and midway games were located on Main Street between Elmwood Avenue and Gervais Street each night after the fair grounds closed for the day. The State Fair has a rich history that has been thoroughly documented by Rodger E. Stroup in his new book, Meet Me at the Rocket, which is set to be published this September. When the fair rolls into town this year, it will bring along with it all of your favorite traditional rides, midway games, and prize-winning art, food, and livestock along with new exciting rides. As part of the 150th Anniversary Fair celebration, the Circus will be coming to town! There will be three live, hourlong circus performances a day inside a new white, red, and green big top tent from the famed Italian Bellucci Circus.
The circus, free with fair admission, will feature high-wire artists, daredevil motorists, duo aerial silks, and more that will leave guests dazzled and amazed. The South Carolina State Fair has changed throughout the years. From the days of daily parades and horse racing to funnel cakes and rollercoasters, the fair has proved to be a tradition that can withstand the test of time. The one thing that remains the same? The incredible memories that you can make each fall with your friends and family when the fair comes to town!
O C T O B E R 9 - 2 0 , 2 0 19 General Admission Tickets: $7 in advance, $10 during the Fair Military: Free for all active duty and retired military and their dependents with proper ID 0-5 years old: Free Seniors 55+: $7 during the fair

Social Mission: Serve & Connect AT F I G , W E B E L I E V E I N T H E P OW E R O F A C O M M U N I T Y that works together to identify needs and find solutions—one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. For our 2019 Social Mission partner, we’ve chosen Serve & Connect, an impactful non-profit whose good works contribute immensely to our thriving, local community. Serve & Connect focuses on igniting community transformation through police-community partnerships, and they recently kicked off their newest venture into community change: COMPASS. Compass is a comprehensive, evidenceinformed approach to promoting community safety. The first COMPASS effort is the North Columbia Youth Empowerment Initiative. This initiative seeks to improve community safety and promote improved youth outcomes in North Columbia. Serve & Connect will do this by focusing on a communityengaged and community-focused centered approach to facilitating grassroots transformation. Since launching, the initiative has engaged over 140 individuals representing 64 organizations throughout the Midlands. Both the Columbia Police Department and the Richland County Sheriff’s office are also actively engaged. Serve & Connect has been working nonstop since launching the initiative to build trust, increase accessibility of resources, and elevate community voice in North Columbia. The movement has sought to mobilize change through a series of creative, community engaged events like their Farmday Funday this past July which drew nearly 800 individuals and provided over 20,000 meals to people in need and their Summer Series hosted across four Wednesdays at the Colony Apartments and North Pointe Estates. By using a comprehensive, systematic, evidence-informed process, Serve & Connect is able to weave community learning and action towards uniting the community effectively and work towards generating a North Columbia where all youth are able to thrive.

Bringing the joy of the performing arts to Aiken JOYE IN AIKEN RETURNS FOR ITS 12TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL Joye is something to feel. It’s something to hear, something to share, something to experience, something to give, and something to see. It’s a festival that entices the world’s best young artists from The Julliard School and beyond to come to South Carolina for a weeklong festival that brings the excitement of learning and the pleasure of artistic discovery to students and audiences alike. “Our mission is to bring the very best in the performing arts to as many citizens as possible, especially students,” said Joye in Aiken’s director, Janice Jennings. “In the last 12 years we’ve brought 450 spectacularly talented artists to Aiken, primarily from Juilliard, to present performances for the public and to teach in area schools.” Donors, participants, and audiences are drawn into Joye in Aiken year after year as the event continues to grow bigger and better. Last year was their largest
festival ever with 80 artists and staff visiting Aiken. The event continues to grow due to the intimate atmosphere of the concerts and the virtuosity of each artist. “First and foremost, it’s the quality of the performances—these are some of the finest artists in the world,” said Janice. “Second, many of the productions are in very intimate and charming venues, and our ticket prices are extremely low compared to those in larger cities. Some events are even free. So you can see these incredible artists in settings that are small enough to allow you to actually meet and interact with them, and you can do it without the expense and inconvenience of going elsewhere.” Joye in Aiken returns March 5-13, 2020 for its 12th annual festival. The Festival will kick off with a New Orleans-Style Parade on Thursday, March 5, and will continue with events that feature pianists,
organists, string quartets, dance parties, Broadway stars, and all kinds of artists and performances in between. “It’s always the most fun week of the year,” said Janice. “Personally I love jazz, so I get very excited about events like the Joye of Jazz and the Swing Dance Party, where every year now we bring in fabulous young musicians who perform at all the famous jazz clubs in New York. We have such great classical and crossover artists as well—it’s hard to choose just one thing!” Become a friend of the Festival! Providing a wide access to the arts is an important part of Joye in Aiken’s mission and because of that, a majority of the Festival’s events are free or low-cost. INT RODUC IN G O U R FIG FA MILY ME M BER : AIKEN, SC! Aiken is a place like no other. At Fig, we believe in loving local— it’s at the very heart of everything that we do. This extends to supporting our neighbors and lifting up the special cities within our state. The people there are as charming and welcoming as our neighbors here in Columbia, and they extend their Southern hospitality to all who visit. It’s no surprise to us that Aiken was voted “Best Small Town” in the 2018 Southern Living South’s Best Awards—it’s a town full of charm and beauty. We’re honored to be able to share more about Aiken and introduce you to the amazing local businesses, places, and people that make Aiken into an extraordinary place that we’re lucky to have just a short drive away from Columbia.

Community Sponsor Highlight: Apizza di Napoli Craving a true, authentic Neapolitan pizza but not up for the transatlantic flight to Italy to order it at a local Italian pizzeria? Hop in your car and make a short drive down I-20 to Aiken, where you’ll find locally-owned Apizza di Napoli. Apizza di Napoli owner and pizza enthusiast, Cliff Garzillo, has a commitment to providing not just the best, but the most authentic Neapolitan pizza in South Carolina. For over two decades, he honed his craft in his own home. He built a brick oven in his backyard and spent his days studying, making, testing, and perfecting his pizza recipes. The recipes were outstanding but Cliff knew that he wanted to learn the art behind the Neapolitan pizza and to do that, he would need to travel. He traveled across the globe to Italy where he would be able to expand his education and experience. Once there, he received extensive training and became a certified pizzaiolo. Back at home in the United States, Cliff and his wife Wanda opened up a pizzeria of their own where they were able to bring Aiken residents their first taste of a true Neapolitan pizza. They use only the finest ingredients— some of which are imported straight from Italy—to craft their delicious pizzas. Each pizza is hand tossed and made to specification before being placed in the brick oven for baking. Their oven was shipped over from Italy and each pizza cooks in just 90 seconds! Their dedication doesn’t just stop with the ingredients and the authentic brick oven. Apizza di Napoli was honored with the prestigious and distinct Certification of True Neapolitan Pizza from the Association Verace Pizza Napoletana in Naples Italy. This means that each pizza that bakes in their brick oven is made under the strict guidelines set forth by the Association and is true to the pizza of Naples.
